Capitol police what you knew donald trump had planned . You were in those meetings at the white house. Thats former congresswoman liz cheney calling out fellow republican jim jordan whos now a top candidate to replace Kevin Mccarthy as house speaker. Well have the latest on that race in just a moment. Meanwhile, donald trump could also be on capitol hill next week to endorse jordans bid for speaker. This would be trumps first visit to the capitol since the insurrection he inspired. And this comes as theres an alarming new report from the New York Times on trumps handling of nuclear secrets. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this friday, october 6th. We made it to friday just barely. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. And well begin this morning with the race for the speaker of the house. Currently only two announced candidates are in the running. House Judiciary Committee House Judiciary Chair jim jordan and majority leader Steve Scalise. Jordan is already shoring up support, securing the endorsement of former President Donald Trump overnight. Trump made the announcement where else but on truth social calling jordan a, quote, star. Nbc news spoke to jordan yesterday about his bid for the speakership and how he differs from Kevin Mccarthy as Congress Faces a rapidly approaching November 17th deadline to pass a Government Spending bill. The key is i think and i hope i can get our team to rally around the process i just described, which is that longerterm cr with that 1 cut, that leverage there put yourself in his reality which is republicans continue to stone wall him, the government is about to shutdown. Youre assuming i cant bring republicans together. Thats why im running. Someones got to bring the Republican Team together. I think thats the fundamental im saying thats the fundamental issue in this race, and i think i can do that. One voice who says jordan cant win the speakership is former republican congresswoman liz cheney. In a speech at the University Of Minnesota yesterday cheney predicted jordan will not earn enough votes, adding that if he does it would be a really bad look for the gop. Cheney also weighed in on the decision to oust Kevin Mccarthy. Jim jordan knew more about what donald trump had planned for january 6th than any other member in the house of representatives. And if the republicans decide that jim jordan should be the speaker of the house, there will be and i by the way, i dont think thats going to happen. I think hell lose. But if they were to decide that, there would no longer be any possible way to argue that a group of elected republicans could be counted onto defend the constitution. Kevin mccarthy at every moment over the course of the last two years has done more to enable and collaborate with and apologize for donald trump. The democrats made what is a principled and honorable and in my view the right decision to say we cannot abide by that. The republicans need to choose their speaker. Theyre in the majority, but we are not going to help to enable somebody who has done those things and who has apologized and appeased donald trump. I think they did exactly the right thing, and it was a courageous show of leadership. Joining us now nbc news capitol hill correspondent our friend julia serken. Jordan just picked up trumps endorsement and also Steve Scalise whos popular among many republicans though perhaps not mccarthy. Right now how are their chances . We heardbout other names potentially entering the fold. Kevinhern, for example, the chair of the republican sources Study Committee says hes been calling around members to get their endorsement. You see the full screen of republicans who voted to oust mccarthy. Jim jordan who certainly has the former president s ear, whos leading the charge on the Impeachment Inquiry in many respects into the current president and Steve Scalise, the majority leader who has served closely in mccarthys leadership although as you point out sometimes mccarthy certainly not happy with him as he almost was the person to take over mccarthys gavel when mccarthy failed during those first 14 rounds to secure the gavel in the first place, these two are really the front runners. And im told theyve been meeting with different factions of the House Republican conference. Jordan even joked with my colleague Ali Vitali He was losing his voice yesterday. I dont know how much it will help him secure those moderates, the vulnerable republicans who are certainly concerned someone like jordan could force them to take difficult votes. Jordan apparently in meeting with them yesterday according to sources had tried to quell some of those concerns. But the former president also potentially thinking about making a viz to the capitol, according of our sources, again to unify republicans now apparently behind jim jordan Behind Closed Doors so that they dont have that embarrassing showing that they had earlier this year where they couldnt call pallese on the house floor. Whoever is speaker confronts a rapidly ticking clock to Government Shutdown deadline. And one of the stickier issues is ukraine funding. Give us the sense there where both jordan and scalise stand on the approach to avoiding a shutdown but also kyiv assistance. Certainly scalise is more that traditional institutionalist republican leader as you know, jonathan, and he has been outspoken on ukraine aid. He and mccarthy have said this is something they need to continue to do, also avoiding a Government Shutdown, something jordan yesterday could not say he would have acted in the same Light Mccarthy had if he was squeezed down to the wire with conservatives when hed worked across the aisle to avoid that Government Shutdown. We dont know if thats jordans reality and he was also the orchestrator in many ways of the longest shutdown in history in 2019 under former President Trump. Jordan certainly supported it. When it comes to ukraine jordan said he would not support that, he would not put that on the floor. The question is would he support it if it was joined to Border Security policies . Thats Something Senate republicans who are in favor of ukraine aid are banking on. I talked to senator Lindsey Graham who said, for example, i dont care if its jim jordan, he hopes someone the house coalesces around someone to be speaker. But he told me like others in the senate they hope the senate leads on a big package on ukraine, something that is joined with Border Security policies, although i dont know if that administration has move to continue building the border wall takes away some of their leverage there. Thats something well have to see. And theres certainly growing concerns among republicans that election for Speaker Setup for wednesday, they may not be able to get an election done then. Nbc news capitol hill correspondent julia circen, thank you so much for starting us off this morning. Really appreciate it. We turn to another headline breaking overnight. Former President Donald Trump reportedly shared Classified Information about American Nuclear submarines and their capabilities with an australian businessman who then allegedly shared that information with more than a dozen foreign officials. Sources familiar with the matter Tell Abc News who first broke the story. Now, two sources familiar with this incident then went onto tell the New York Times that trumps disclosures potentially endangered u. S. Nuclear fleet. The businessman whos named Anthony Pratt is a member at maralago who reportedly discussed submarines with trump back in april 2021. According to the times, the rmer president revealed at least two pieces of critical information about the u. S. Submarines taxical capacities including how many war heads the vessels carried and how close they could get to their russian counter parts without being detected. Sources are telling abc that pratt described trumps remark tuesday at least 45 others including six journalists, 11 of his companys employees, ten australian officials, and three former australian prime ministers. The potential disclosure was reported to special counsel jack smiths team as they are investigating trumps alleged hoarding of classified documents at his palm beach estate. Representatives for pratt did not respond to messages seeking comment from abc news. A trump spokesperson said the report lacked, quote, proper context and went onto say that President Trump did nothing wrong. Now, well have more on the legal developments surrounding the former president ahead on our show this morning including the outrageous claim made by his defense team in the federal election interference case. Elsewhere, the Biden Administration says it will now expand former President Donald Trumps wall on the Mexican Border and start deporting thousands of venezuelans who unlawfully eered the country. The two moves are seen as a reversal by the white house under intense political pressure to stop the number of migrants entering the u. S. Illegally. During his president ial campaign biden, of course, blasted efforts to build a wall along the u. S. Mexico border calling it, quote, not serious policy solution. But notably the white house of lateas faced increasing criticism from Democratic Leaders who say the influx of migrants is overwhelming their resources to aist them. President ben was asked about the Border Wall Announcement before a meeting in the oval office with his National Security team yesterday. Heres what the president had to say. I tried to reappropriate to redirect that money. They didnt, they wouldnt, and in the meantime theres nothing under the law other than they have to use the money to appropriate. I cant stop that. Its your fault, but we wish you a nice weekend. Still ahead on Way Too Early, donald trump is floating himself as a temporary solution for republicans in a new search the house speaker. Now hes also backing jim jordan. Well get into that, but thats nut the only capitol related story involving the former president. Well explain when we come right back. President. Well explain when we come right back welcome back to Way Too Early. It is exactly 5 30 a. M. On the east coast, 2 30 out west on this friday morning. Im jonathan lemire, thank you for being with us. Donald trump may soon visit the u. S. Capitol in an effort to help House Republicans elect a new speaker and unify the party. Sources are telling nbc news, the former president may visit the capitol early next week. If he does, it would be his first time there since the january 6th insurrection. This potential visit comes as a few republicans suggested trump run for speaker of himself. You dont have to be member of the house to be a speaker. While the gop frontrunner says hes remaining committed to running for president , he did entertain the idea for a little while yesterday but then a short time later endorsed jim jordan for speaker but also offered to step in for speaker temporarily if republicans cant decide on a leader. Basically who knows. Joining us now congressional reporter for axios. Maybe she can provide some answers. Sophia, what is the thinking here if theres any from trump camp about this potential visit from the capitol . Does he actually want to step in to be speaker . Is this an effort to gain attention and distract from his legal issues . And isnt there some risk involved if he goes there and starts whipping votes for jim jordan and jordan cant get to the magic number . Yes, so heres the thing, he loves to sell chaos. He also loves to insert himself into the news. Hes been sitting there and reveling in the four days of backtoback coverage and so even if he does not ultimately pursue the speaker which i really dont think which i think hes seriously considering and even if he doesnt go to the capitol, which that is more serious idea and someone close to me told me last night hes the closest hes ever been to returning to the capitol for the First Time Since january 6th. And so i think the thinking is he wants to show hes still the face of the Republican Party and he will get the nomination. Yeah, certainly, hes desperate for attention. And yes, if he were to go there and unify the party that cements himself that much further as being the face of the gop, but theres some risk involved, too. Lets turn to your story this morning, sophia, about this Nevertrump Movement within the gop that is frankly faltering, is melting away with trump in such a commanding position in all the early polls. Tell us more about it. Reporter weve got a couple of data points here that show change. Youve Gut A Club For Growth affiliated pac that recently told donors they spent 6 million testing 40 antitrump messages and none of them have worked. Youve got another pac, republican accountability pac, announced its going to stop Spending Money in the republican primary. Its going to turn its attention to the general. And so youve got also people who are not really trump fans, people like brian kemp. He has recently said if trump does beat the nomination, then, you know, brian kemp would support him. And all of these things are really just indications that the Republican Party has what i like to call trump inevitability setting in. And thats kind of a reality that theyve theyve turned around to in the last couple of months, whether they like it or not. And lastly, sophia, tell us about the state of Governor Ron Desantis campaign who for so long was considered the leading trump alternative and his Campaign Launch has been disastrous slipping in the polls and thats a Team Desperate for a real reset, real reboot. Is there any sign thats happening . Yeah, i dont know yet, john, about that one because theyve theyve been struggling with attendance at some of their events. We know the biggest sign of change in terms of the Money Support is that some of his biggest donors including robert bigalowe, including ken griffon, these are people who spent Tens Of Millions of dollars on ron desantis previously or for his gubernatorial run, and theyve both paused their support at least for now say they dont agree with the strategy or they just dont see him as a viable candidate. We know that deep pocketed donors, theyre still giving desantis and haley a look, but theyre really trying to decide if at all its worth putting their money behind another alternative. All right, congressional reporter for axios, thank you for joining us. Still ahead here well turn to Business News and a medication thats boosting walmarts profits is hurting the bottom line in other areas. Well tell you about that when cnbc joins us. Well also provide some insight on the markets ahead of the September Jobs Report which is due out in just a few hours. Well be back with that. W hours. Well be back with that. Honey. Honey. Nyquil severe honey. Powerful cold and flu relief with a dreamy honey taste. Nyquil honey, the nighttime, sniffing, sneezing, couging, aching, fever, honeylicious, best sleep with a cold, medicine. Time now for business and for that lets bring in cnbcs Julianna Tatelbaum who joins us live from london. Hey, julianna. Markets inched slightly down yesterday as investors waited for the September Jobs Report out in a couple hours. There it is a lot of green. What are the expectations . Well, john, investors this morning are putting a little bit more money back in the market. As you said u. S. Futures are pointing to a modestly positive start to trade today. The number to watch out for 170,000, thats how many jobs economists on average think would have been added last month. Thats down from 187,000 added the prior month. The Unemployment Rate is another figure to watch out for. This is a particularly sensitive jobs report because if the number is really weak, if its less than 170,000, then markets might get scared it might signal a recession is coming. But on the other hand if its significantly stronger than 170,000, then the markets might also react badly on the basis it could mean the fed has to keep rates higher for longer, so a really fine balancing act and a pretty tight sweet spot when it comes to todays job numbers. Well have coverage on that in a couple of hours when that comes out on morning joe. Walmart is flagging a Grocery Trend among Weight Loss Drug users, and guess which one. Whats going on here . Well, this is a fascinating story. Weve been watching it closely here at cnbc, the emergency of this new class of obesity drugs. You might know the name wegove, ozempic. Walmart has come out yesterday and theyre studying customer buying patterns, looking at people who pick up the Prescription Drugs and shop at their stores versus people similar profile who dont buy their prescription zrugs. What they found those taking the Weight Loss Drugs are buying a bit less food at their store. We saw reaction to a lot of food and Beverage Companies in response to these comments coming out from walmart, saw selloff from Soda Companies even beer makers as investors try to look at the impact this Weight Loss Drugs will have on the demand for food and drinks. Lastly, there is some news that adding a side of fries to the Fast Food Order might help the u. S. Economy. Im no economist but it does seem to me buying something new, something additional would help the economy. But give us the full story. It goes a little bit further than this. I actually love this metric. I learned this term for the first time this morning. The fry attachment rate, basely looking at whether customers are continuing to add fries to their orders at Fast Food Chains and restaurants because the assumption is the economy weakens and peoples wallets get tighter, they might not be as inclined to splurge and add fries to their order. Customers are ordering french fries at Fast Food Restaurants at a faster rate than before the pandemic. Its been pretty steady over the last several months, so theyre saying it could be a positive sign for the economy. It could show that customers continue to be willing to splurge on fries with their meals even inflation remains high. A word of warning they of course say with the unknown and uncertain economic outlook, traffic trends at these restaurants may be volatile over the coming months, so its not a surefire sign but it is a signal that demand is holding up. Next week well combine stories and check on the impact of ozempic on the fry attachment rate. Coming up, there are new developments in several of Donald Trumps legal cases. Were going to walk through all of them with the help of former litigator and msnbc legal analyst lisa rubin. Well be grateful she joins us to help us sort it all out. Well be right back. Donald trumps legal team is working to delay or dismiss several ongoing legal battles involving the former president. First, the trump team moved to the dismiss the indictment in his federal election interference case by claiming president ial immunity, irktse, a president can never be charge would a crime. The former president claim his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and remain in the white house were at the, quote, heart of his official responsibilities as president. Turning to new york city, the trump team filed to have his case dismissed regarding the falsifying of Business Records related to Hush Money Payments Involving Adult Film Actress stormy daniels. They waited the prosecutors waited too long to bring her case. Next up, the former president s classified documents case where Trump Lawyers have once again asked judge Aileen Cannon to postpone the trial until after next novembers president ial election. Also trump unexpectedly dismissed a 500 million lawsuit against his former lawyer, michael cohen, yesterday while vowing to revisit it at a later date. Well see. Trump had been scheduled to sit for a deposition in that case on monday. And lastly, Donald Trumps lawyers are expected to ask for a pause in his Civil Fraud Trial today after an irate trump left the courthouse in new york city on wednesday. Joining us now to help us sort through all these developments former litigator and current msnbc legal analyst lisa rubin. Lisa, good morning. Lets start with the ongoing trial, the one captivating the nation this week, the Civil Fraud Trial in new york city. Did he have any chance at all in getting his request for a stay granted . I dont think its likely that hell get his request for a stay, but to the extent that he can convince a new York Appeals Court that the relief that judge Arthur Engoron has ordered through his Summary Judgment motion last week cant be unwrung and is inseparable from the trial. There is a small possibility we could see a positive proceedings even as early, john, as today. So i will be back in that new york courtroom later today. There is a possibility that while were sitting there, we will learn that theyve determined to stop the trial and stop the implementation of relief judge engoron issued last week. That would be traumatic. And if that would happen how long of a pause would it be do you think . It would be pending an appeal. Ive asked sources how long they expect that to take. They believe an appeal wouldnt even be fully briefed until perhaps december or january, which as you know is after this trial is expected to conclude. Lets hit a couple more quickly. The trump team asked for the classified documents trial to be delayed again until after the election. That was slow moving anyway. Whats your sense what can happen there . My sense is that they will probably get some of what they want but not all of what they want. Again, theyve made this request before to judge Aileen Cannon, and while shes been impartial to the trump team side on certain issues, she rejected their bid to move the case entirely until after the election. They also made their request in a brief replying to a request they had already made just to postpone Motion Briefing by a few months, so the fact theyre renewing it again and trying to slip it in under the radar probably wont go so well under judge cannon. Incrementally if they can sort of move the ball down the field, ultimately they might achieve that overall objectf ovpostponing this case. One Case Litigators have deemed built e litigators have deemed built heading for trial next year. Now, we get what seems to be a hail mary from the trump team, suggesting a president cannot be charged with any sort of crime. Blanket immunity, basically. Whats your assessment there . My assessment is thats not going to go over very well. On the other hand, its a legally open issue. Look, president nixon wouldnt have needed a pardon if president ial immunity existed in a blanket form. However, the Supreme Court has never ruled on that issue. Former President Trump has all pretrial motions due on october 9th, and his lawyers signalled multiple times they plan to move to dismiss on grounds of president ial immunity. Its not apr surprise they made the motion but it is, as you said, a hail mary and not one i expect judge Tanya Chutkan to take up for them. Legal analyst lisa rubin covering a lot of ground for us this morning. Shell be heading to the court later today. Well see developments there. Thanks. Up next on Way Too Early, new polling shows an overwhelming majority of Americans Trust donald trump over joe biden when it comes to handling several key issues. Well dig into the surprising numbers. Coming up on morning joe, new details surrounding the former president s handling of classified documents amid reports that trump shared nuclear secrets. Plus, the latest in the race toe become the next speaker of the house. But voters in this poll overwhelmingly think that trump is better than biden at handling most issues. According to the latest survey from Marquette University law school, biden leads trump by two points, 51 to 49 , among likely 2024 general election voters. We should note, that is within the polls margin of error. When asked which candidate they trust more to handle key issues, trump is way ahead i most areas. On inflatio the economy, and immigration, trump has a more than 20 point advantage over biden among registered voters. Biden does hold a narrow lead over trump when it comes to his handling of medicare and larger leads on things like abortion policy and climate change. Joining us now to help us make sense of these numbers, White House Correspondent for politico and coauthor of the playbook, eugene daniels. Good morning. Great to see you this morning. Lets start with just your take on that poll. We know that the economy has been an issue for this white house, that they feel like they arent quite getting the credit they deserve for improvements. They also acknowledge they need to do a better job of selling it. The bidenomics reboot hasnt worked it seems, per this poll anyway. Give us your take. Yeah. I mean, part of it is the economy is in a confusing place, right . Its not as easy as things are going well or things are going badly. Theres all these different types of ways that you measure things in this economy that arent easily explainable to the american people. Its much easier to say things like, the economy isnt working, move on, which is what republicans and donald trump can say. I will say, On The Issues you talked about on the economy and immigration, for example, where donald trump is doing so much better than joe biden, that is something those places are issues and topics that republicans have been hammering and talking about for much longer, really, than democrats. When youve been working on that for much longer, i think people see it differently. Same thing how, you know, biden is winning on climate change, right . That is something that people see as a democratic issue when, really, there are both sides of the aisle that care at some points about and have some agreement a little bit on those issues. It is going to be tough to counter those, and i think, you know, as much as the administration and the campaign has been talking about the economy and making sure that works, i think their best bet continues to be hoping gas prices stay a little bit lower and hoping that this is a biden trump rematch. So those things and the issues sets are not going to be as much of a Central Point of the campaign. Right. If the election is about donald trump, its probably good for joe biden. Seems to be the theory. Exactly. Eugene, immigration, you mentioned it, is one of the difficult spots here, and the poll reflects that, for this white house. Now, we have this news that theyre going to increase the resume the deportations of venezuelan migrants, and then theyll start rebuilding the wall. This administration is building more of it. Walk us through the conundrum. Part of this is because of some money appropriated by congress in 2019. The administration has been kind of slow walking this and asking congress to reappropriate those funds, saying, you know, it can be immigration. We dont want to have to do a border wall. We dont believe that is effective. Recently, theyve waived all of these different types of signed some waivers, basically saying this is going to happen. I was in the Briefing Room yesterday with jeanpierre. From the outset, they said, were not building a border wall, period. Thats what biden promised coming in, so he has members of his own party upset. Upset because of the deportation of people from venezuela, the idea they havent expanded as much refugees, accepted as many as people on the left wanted. Republicans say this is a white house that doesnt care about immigration, even though they have done different types of things at the border. Theyre getting it from all sides. Again, for this white house, trying to explain the intricacies and the nerdiness of the Policy Differences here, like, we have to follow the law here but we dont want to do it, even though, when you talk to democrats on the hill, or, you know, that care about immigration or work on the immigration issues, what they would tell you is, they could have the white house could have kept fighting, could have kept stalling on this, gone to court somewhere. So theyre, one, questioning what the white house is doing and why theyre doing the things theyre doing when it comes to immigration or why it feels out of step a little bit with the promises made on the campaign trail. Yeah. Certainly, the white house could point to progress they made this week about student loans, Prescription Drugs. They say those are the things that americans are going to feel and that will win their votes next year, but those polls reflect, things are very, very tight. Eugene daniels of politico, great to talk to you, my friend. Thank you for joining this morning. Thanks for getting up Way Too Early on this friday morning and all week long. Morning joe starts right now. Several months ago, a Foreign Policy expert on the International Level went to advise donald trump, and three times, he asked about the use of nuclear weapons. Three times he asked, at one point,
