>> look at what happened putin did today. he killed prigozhin. when i was at the u.n. the russian ambassador suddenly die. this guy is a murderer. and you are choosing a murderer over a -- >> when these drug pushers are bringing fentanyl across the border, that's going to be the last thing they do. we're going to use force and we're going to leave them stone-cold dead. >> some of the highlights from last night's republican presidential debate. we'll have much more from the fiery showdown in milwaukee. plus, the man who led a brief mutiny against vladimir putin appears to have been killed in a plane crash. we'll have the latest out of moscow. also ahead an update out of fulton county, georgia, where more of donald trump's coconspirators have turned themselves in ahead of the former president's expected surrender tonight. good morning and welcome to "way too early" on this thursday, august 24th. i'm elise jordan in for jonathan lemire. we begin with last night's combative republican primary debate in milwaukee. eight candidates took the stage and sparred over abortion, the economy, ukraine, the january 6th capitol attack and more. while donald trump could have been the focus, he's going to actually be the focus later today when he surrenders to authorities in georgia. and so last night's debate gave his competitors a clans to steal the spotlight from the gop front runner at least for two hours. one of the most heated moments last night came when former vice president mike pence called out the only candidate on stage to never hold elected office. entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy for his lack of experience. >> vivek, you recently said a president can't do everything. well, i've got news for you, vivek, i've been in the hallway. i've been in the west wing. a president of the united states has to confront every crisis facing america. >> i'm not sure i exactly took mike pence's comment, but i'll let you all parse that out. >> i'll go slower this time. >> i sometimes struggle with -- >> i was house conservative leader before it was cool. joe biden has weakened this country at home and abroad. now is not the time for on the job training. we don't need to bring in a rookie -- we don't need to bring in people without experience. >> now everybody's gotten their memorized prepared slogans out of the way, we're going to have to real discussion now. >> is that one of yours? >> not really. we're going to have is fun tonight. the reality is you have a bunch of politicians, super pac puppets following slogans handed over to them by their 400-page super pacs last week. do you want a super pac puppet or do you want a patriot who speaks the truth? >> former new jersey governor chris christie also went after vivek ramaswamy after he called climate change a hoax. >> i've had enough -- i've had enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like chatgpt stand up here and the last person in one of these debates who stood in the middle of the stage and said what's a skinny guy with an odd last name doing up here was barack obama, and i'm afraid we're dealing with the same type of amateur standing on the stage tonight. >> give me a hug just like you did to obama, and you'll help elect me just like obama, too. >> last night also marked the first presidential debate in more than 50 years where roe v. wade was no longer the law of the land. when asked about the possibility of a federal abortion ban, the only woman on stage, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley, had a different more nuanced view than former vice president mike pence. >> when it comes to a federal ban, let's be honest with the american people and say it will take 60 senate votes. it will take a majority of the house, so in order to do that let's find consensus. >> nikki, you're my friend but consensus is the opposite of leadership. when the supreme court returned this question to the american people, they didn't just send it to the states om. it's not a states only issue. it's a moral issue. it's going to take unapologetic leadership, leadership that stands on principle and expresses compassion for women in crises, in pregnancies. i'll do that as president of the united states. >> so first of all i will say it is in the hands of the people and that's where it should be, but when you're talking about a federal ban, be honest with the american people. >> i am -- >> we haven't had 45 pro-life senators in over 100 years, so no republican president can ban abortions anymore than a democrat president could ban all those state laws. don't make women feel like they have to decide on this issue when you know we don't have 60 senate votes in the house. >> south carolina senator tim scott also weighed in on abortion. despite commending the supreme court last year for, quote, returning the power back to the states where it belongs, tim scott took a different tact last night claiming blue states should not have the authority to decide their own abortion laws. >> we cannot let states like california, new york, and illinois have abortions on demand up until the day of birth. that immoral. it is unethical. it is wrong. we can't leave it to illinois. we can't leave it to minnesota. we can't leave it to illinois. we must solve that issue with a 15-week limit at a minimum. >> joining us now is politics reporter for sema for, shelby talcott. she woke up way too early in milwaukee to report. what was your big take-aways specifically to how the candidates dealt with the topic of abortion? >> i thought that was one of the areas which showed that the republican party is still really wishy-washy on the topic of abortion. we spoke to the sba president who was an anti-abortion activist group afterwards, and she seemed a little disappointed in both the candidates responses and also how the questions were framed. and i think the overarching team with the abortion topic on the debate stage last night was that republicans still haven't figured out how to adequately talk about this issue in the wake of roe. >> and shelby, they also haven't figured out how to talk about former president donald trump's legal problems. overall, who do you think were the biggest winners and then the biggest losers last night? >> it's really hard to say. it's a good question because i don't think there was a moment on the debate stage in which any of the candidates really faltered. and so in that sense it's actually okay for all eight people on stage. i think asa hutchinson kind of faded into the background a little. i think tim scott the way he's running this presidential campaign is sort of as he's going to be the adult in the room, he's not going to take those punches, i think -- i don't know how much that helps him tonight on the debate stage especially given you had pence and vivek ramaswamy really going after each other and kind of sucking up all the oxygen in the room. so in that sense vivek ramaswamy i remember when he was polling at 1 or 2% told me his main goal was to make the debate stage because it would be a big opportunity to get eyeballs and get his name out there. whether or not you think he did a good or bad job, i think he got that done clearly. the other person who i think will be really interesting to see whether he gets a bump in the polls or not is ron desantis because remember before this debate, ron desantis' campaign was telling everybody he was going to be the center of attacks. he was not. so i'm curious whether that means there's a shift in who people think is in second place or whether -- whether he remains in second place and gets a bump in the polls from how he did. >> thank you so much, shelby. politics reporter for sema for, shelby talcott, thanks for coming on this morning. >> plus the leader of the wagner mercenary group who led his fighters on a short-lived march towards moscow just two months ago has reportedly died in a plane crash. the question this morning was vladimir putin somehow involved? [♪♪] russian state media is reporting that a private passenger plane en route from moscow to st. petersburg yesterday had the leader of the wagner mercenary group, yevgeny prigozhin, onboard when it crashed. a social media account linked to the militia also claimed prigozhin was on the plane. all ten people on board were reportedly killed. this video up loaded to social media has been independently geolocated by nbc news. it shows you can see a plane falling to the ground in the same area where prigozhin's plane reportedly crashed. nbc news has not independently verified prigozhin was on this plane. earlier this summer the wagner group with prigozhin at the helm staged an up rising against the russian government. it was ultimately unsuccessful and short-lived but raised questions inside russia about the viability of the wagner group and also vladimir putin's grip on power. joining us now senior correspondent for yahoo news, michael weiss. michael, thanks for waking up so early. do you actually believe that prigozhin was killed here? >> i do. not just prigozhin but the commander of the wagner who's a former lieutenant colonel of the gru, which is russia's military intelligence service who was the i mean the combat leader of the wagner private military company in a long list of about 8 to 10 other people, passengers on prigozhin's private jet, according to russian state media. and important to keep in mind here this was a marquee assassination. you know, prigozhin has been all over the world in the last several days. he was just in mali in africa two days ago apparently there to try and regain some of the prestige and credibility that wagner had lost as a result of their aborted coup in june. and so the idea his plane was shot out of the sky by russian air defense systems suggests that this has the paw prints of vladimir putin written all over them. this guy could have been taken out at any point outside of russian federation territory. stead, he was taken out inside russian federation territory about 180 miles north west of moscow. and this is something, by the way, everybody has been predicting. i mean you don't stage an up rising against the czar of russia without facing severe consequences. so it was either going to be prigozhin would foment another coup or he would be the subject of an assassination attempt, and in this case it seems this attempt was successful. >> well, michael, that's what's almost surprising about this, not that it happened but that it actually happened a bit after the initial coup attempt. what do you make of that time duration that prigozhin was able to travel the world, and he was still alive in the aftermath of staging a coup against putin? >> well, i mean, this isn't quite over. i've been studying wagner for several years. they're quite popular inside russia. they're quite popular in the military industrial complex of russia, within the russian mod there are a lot of people who sympathize with russia. i did a story inquirying russian intelligence officers, military intelligence from fsb to border guard. a lot of these guys sympathize with wagner's push against the russian federation because they think that wagner was the only fighting vanguard in russia that was actually taking the fight to the ukrainians. so if you look at what social media is saying, telegram channels that are affiliated with wagner, they're basically threatening to do a second coup because of this. if he is dead, this is our hero, this is our commander, we are going to do a second quote-unquote march on moscow. so it's very interesting because it seems that putin took him out because of his attempt to grab power. and yet perhaps did not think it through because he is so popular, he has such a good command on essentially the worst of the worst in russian territory that they're now vengeful for blood. >> there's still just so much developing with this story. thank you so much senior correspondent for yahoo news, michael weiss, thank you. still ahead we're switching to sports and a serious injury to the best player in baseball. >> plus yankees slugger aaron judge finally joins a somewhat exclusive club. that's all straight ahead. exclusive club that's all straight ahead. new cascade platinum plus... with double the dawn grease fighting power and double the scrubbing power. for a no rewash clean... and a cabinet ready shine. upgrade to new cascade platinum plus. dare to dish differently. age is just a number, and mine's unlisted. try boost® high protein with 20 grams of protein for muscle health versus 16 grams in ensure® high protein. boost® high protein. now available in cinnabon® bakery-inspired flavor. learn more at boost.com/tv (christina) with verizon business unlimited, now available in cinnabon® bakery-inspired flavor. i get 5g, truly unlimited data, and unlimited hotspot data. so, no matter what, i'm running this kitchen. do you believe he did the right thing? >> absolutely he did the right thing, number one. number two, we should be -- we should be asking ourselves a bigger question about the weaponization of the department of justice. when i'm president the first thing i'll do is fire merrick garland. second thing i'll do is fire christopher wray. >> mike pence stood for the constitution, and he deserves not grudging credit. he deserves our thanks as americans for putting his oath of office and the constitution of the united states before personal political and unfair pressure. >> i do think that vice president pence did the right thing, and i do think that we need to give him credit for that. >> i've answered this before. mike did his duty, i've got no beef with him. but here's the thing, is this what we're going to be focusing ongoing forward, the rehashing of this? i'll tell you democrats would love that. >> the president asked me in his request that i reject or return votes unilaterally, power that no vice president in american history had ever exercised or taken, he asked me to put him over the constitution, and i chose the constitution. >> joining us now former republican congressman david jolly of florida. so, david, there's so much to unpack here. i don't know where to start. i guess we could do the tepid responses to mike pence's constitutional action on january 6th, but then, you know, big picture i was surprised more candidates didn't go after the front runner on the front stage, not the front-runner in the race because that's donald trump but ron desantis. what do gnaw make of that? >> i was fascinated by that exchange because the crowd actually cheered and affirmed mike pence. i suspected he might have been booed because of the trump dynamic in the race, so that was a little intriguing. mike pence had a good night for mike pence. he showed he deserve today be in the race as a former vice president. put some people to sleep, but, look, he did well. it was fascinating people didn't go after ron desantis. and ron desantis showed himself to be that uniquely unlikable, unsteady odd duck on the stage. >> when you were in congress, you served in congress with him. >> yeah, we ran against each other for over a year. look, i don't think ron desantis hurt himself or helped himself, which coming out of a debate is probably fine for ron desantis. he still has a ton of money, but i think what he still has to look out for it was the vivek show. the story is ramaswamy. and if ramaswamy gained 5 or 6 points all of a sudden ron desantis is in third. >> i was interested in who was getting cheered and booed throughout the night. and vivek ramaswamy like him or not, he had a lot of energy in the auditorium, and he was getting booed. and that auditorium was filled mostly with donors, and that's a donor audience. and nikki haley got a lot of clears for taking on ramaswamy, but then the boos were there. so what do you make of the ramaswamy effect? >> interesting, i think ramaswamy annoyed a lot of people on the stage, in the audience, and at home. that's not a disqualifier. i think what was unique about ramaswamy is he was the closest trump surrogate on that stage than anybody else. when ron desantis' super pac released the memo that said defend donald trump, ramaswamy was the one that actually took that advice and it paid off for him. i think the attacks by haley on ramaswamy were heard. i think last night the four on the survivor island are ramaswamy, desantis, haley and pence. >> i think i'd have to agree with that but throw in chris christie just because he's not going to go away and he wasn't prehand, which is -- the opening of the debate was rough to watch because so many of the candidates were sticking to their pre-can lines and in the era of trump no one wants that. and you can tell the absence of trump, it was pretty glaring he wasn't there. >> it was. and that was part of the appeal of ramaswamy. he was unique. i think it's hard sometimes to put ourselves in the shoes of republican primary voters. but rom swamary or desantis for being awkward or whatever it was, were actually using the words and speaking the words republican voters wanted to hear. sometimes we dismiss that. >> well, i think the big issue that divided the candidates on stage and it's when i go into focus groups and you're talking to republican voters, it divides them, too, what to do about ukraine and being more isolationist and staying out, and then those republicans who want to go hard will take on putin. and who won that debate last night? >> haley and pence because they showed their experience. right, they relied on their strength of experience that the others didn't have, and they touched those traditional national security themes that republicans still largely embrace, but they're still questioning that. i think the story with the longest legs coming out of last night is the abortion issue remains a disaster for republicans. they're unsettled on it. there's differences in between. even ron desantis still cannot answer a question on the national ban. listen, this is prime time now. you need an answer on an issue that is going to motivate and form and drive voters next november. republicans don't have an answer that's working. haley at least trying to say let's change the tone and not demonize, and a national ban is not workable. but it still doesn't solve the issue that some states have these six-week bans. >> and how politically radioactive that is for republican candidates in a general election cycle. >> that's right. >> thank you so much, david, for coming on. there's going to be so much more in this republican primary cycle, so thank you. former republican congressman david jolly of florida. coming up, we're taking a look at this morning's business headlines and the markets, which are climbing following monster earnings report after yesterday's closing bell. cnbc joins us with much more on all of that next. n all of that next ♪ did you know 80% of women are struggling with hair damage? >> that is right. so nvidia who seem to be the sort of flag bearer for a.i. chip technology posted up what some analysts are calling incredible results. net income grew by 88% from just the first quarter to the second quarter. we're looking at ten fold revenue growth from just a year ago, so really, really very strong results not just for this current quarter but also guiding to further strength in the years to come. the stock is trading up 10% today in free market trade, and it is up almost 220% year to date. on the flip side we had very disappointing results out of peloton. i don't know if you have one of those bikes but the stock dropped 20% yesterday. they warned about the profit outlook, and they said that they have started losing subscribers. they lost 29,000 paying members in the quarter, so not good news for peloton stock holders. >> we're over the covid exercise at home moment i guess. on a more serious note, there's a new estimate this morning on the cost of the devastating wildfires in hawaii. can you talk about the economic impact of this disaster and what it's going to take for maui's recovery? >> yes. well, moody's put out a note yesterday estimating that the total losses from the wildfires are estimated to be between 4 billion and $6 billion. the 6 billion the upper end of their estimates. the real cost could be even higher, though, because the 4 to $6 billion estimate does not take into consideration the effect of gdp and social costs as well. insurance is expected to cover most of the damage, about 75% or more, but again the impact has been very, very severe. it is, of course, the worst disaster in hawaii state history. >> it's so tragic, and hope that maui is able to rebuild quickly. cnbc's joumanna bercetche live from london, thank you so much. still ahead, it appears that donald trump is trying to make a spectacle -- shocker -- out of his surrender in georgia. what to expect tonight in fulton county next on "way too early." n county next on "way too early. roll it back, everybody!! charmin ultra soft is so cushiony soft, you'll want more! but it's so absorbent, you can use less. enjoy the go with charmin. businesses need 5g solutions today. that's why they choose t-mobile for business. mlb partners with t-mobile to not only enhance the fan experience, but to advance how the game is played. aaa relies on t-mobile's network to stay connected nationwide, so they can help get their members back on the road. and we're helping pano ai innovate, to stop the spread of wildfires. now's the time to see what america's largest 5g network can do for your business. power e*trade's award-winning trading app makes trading easier. with its customizable options chain, easy-to-use tools and paper trading to help sharpen your skills, you can stay on top of the market from wherever you are. e*trade from morgan stanley. age is just a number, and mine's unlisted. try boost® high protein with 20 grams of protein for muscle health versus 16 grams in ensure® high protein. boost® high protein. now available in cinnabon® bakery-inspired flavor. learn more at boost.com/tv feeling sluggish or weighed down? >> i don't know that it much matters in the court of law. you know, one thing i worry about, of course, is civil unrest. when you have this much advanced notice of his appearance and this much vitreal about the charges, i worry people may show up and engage in some sort of violence. but in terms of his case the circumstances of his arrest will not be made to the jury. the jury will only hear about the facts included in the allegations in the indictment. unless he commits some sort of new crime tonight, which i don't expect him to do, i don't think it much matters there. i worry more about public safety than about consequences for the trial. >> barbara, under his bond agreement trump was told he cannot communicate with any codefendants in the case except through lawyers, which seems like it could be a difficult, tall order for him. giuliani said yesterday that he spoke to the former president, so does this mean that already donald trump could have violated his bond agreement? >> yes. you know, oops, don't say these things in public, rudy. not necessarily. it's not that can't talk taeach other. it's that they can't talk to each other about the case. what i heard rudy giuliani say i talk today the president as he calls him and wished him well. so that's permitted, but they most certainly are not permitted to talk about the case. it's some ways it's difficult to enforce because it's hard to know what happens behind closed doors or on telephone lines, but to the extent it is -- becomes known they're talking about the case, that's when they're going to have a problem. >> barbara, big picture four different indictments against the former president trump, and i think up to 91 charges. which of these cases do you think most threatens donald trump with a possible conviction? >> i think for possible conviction i think the documents case out of mar-a-lago strikes me as the easiest path only because that is a set of crimes that get charged fairly routinely by the government. it's not unheard of for a former employee to retain classified documents and mishandle them. so for that reason those legal theories are pretty tried and true. and the evidence there seems to be very strong. they've got video of the movement of boxes, so that one seems very strong. but in terms of peril to his long-term freedom and political career, i think the case out of georgia is a very strong one just because of the inability of a future president to pardon donald trump for this and the presence of that five-year mandatory minimum sentence. >> barbara, i have a feeling we're going to be seeing you a lot in the coming days. thanks for your analysis. former u.s. attorney barbara mcquade, thanks so much. >> thank you. up next, most republican candidates say they will support donald trump again even if he's convicted. what a show of hands on it debate about trump's hold on the gop. coming up on "morning joe," former new jersey governor chris christie discusses his debate performance, despite being booed. the front runner is expected to turn himself into authorities in georgia. an expert panel is standing by with the legal and political angles ahead of trump's surrender. do you believe trump would lose in a rematch between trump and biden? >> it's certainly possible. there is also a lot of polling that shows donald trump would win. i think that's actually one of the things that is buoying him. there is a tough electability argument to make when plenty of polling shows biden is weak and donald trump could easily win. i think it was a good message, but the reality is, just there identified, probably the only moment in the debate when someone made that argument. we had two hours where nobody really, other than nikki haley in the moment, made an affirmative case for why we should turn the page. probably the biggest winner of the debate is donald trump because no one has forced him back into coming onto those stages again. you can't have a real debate without donald trump. the people need donald trump n the stage if they have a chance of beating them. if i'm donald trump, after last night, with most of the people defending him, i don't see any reason why i need to be there the second time around. >> well, that was, i think, i believe you tweeted that last night. i completely agreed. what incentive does donald trump have to participate going forward? he sat out the last round. he gets to be the incumbent, so to speak. is there any chance donald trump will participate in any debate after this last one? >> we have to see what the polling shows. obviously, another benefit to him is nobody really had a breakout moment. as you already discussed, this was very much the typical debate. if he gets a bump, it is fine. nobody thinks he is going to be the nominee. if donald trump pays a price in the polling for not showing up, he may need to reconsider. i don't see anything that happened last night that's going to fundamentally change the race here. look, you can't play it safe when you're down 40 points. the only person who seemed to not be playing it safe was vivek, inserting himself into every debate, basically, and making himself the center of attention. but this is a person who is there to run interference for donald trump, so i don't think he is a real threat to him. we're in this situation where everybody is playing it safe. until something changes, nothing is going to change. donald trump is going to continue to have a commanding lead. everybody had a fine debate. ron desantis had a fine debate. mike pence had a fine debate. but when you're losing by this much, i don't think fine is good enough. >> well, let's listen to what former governor of arkansas, asa hutchinson, who did not get much speaking time last night, had to say about the justice department. >> whenever you look at the underlying challenge of america though, no one likes to see america with smash and grab in the inner cities. as president of the united states, that will stop. it starts at the top with the respect for our justice system, that a former president, who is under indictment, has undermined by attacking judges, by attacking prosecutors, by attacking the system, and saying he is aggrieved. so we have to have respect for our justice system and the rule of law, and it starts at the top with the president of the united states. >> brendan, that almost seems like a throwback to republicans talking about respect for institutions of government. today, many voetders, just trump voters, see the doj as the enemy. what do you make of how hutchinson's message is going to resonate with the republican primary electorate? >> yeah, it's tough. i mean, a lot of groundwork has been laid that doj and fbi are corrupt, and i respect asa hutchinson for being one of the very few people to speak with moral clarity and honesty about this. the reality is there aren't a lot of people out there who are buying that at this point. it's probably one of the reasons he is barely registering in a lot of poll. i think back to one of the moments when nikki haley and vivek. nikki haley went hard on ukraine. everybody lifted that up as a big moment for nikki haley. we have to appreciate that vivek is probably closer to where republican voters are on the issue of ukraine. while she may have verbally won that debate, he may actually be better aligned with voters. here's a situation where asa hutchinson, again, very clear, what i would like from my traditional republican party to talk about, but he may be completely out of step with where voters are. i'll be interested with the contrast between what polls show after this, with how the donors in the room felt in the moment, how they cheered. >> good point on the donors in the room cheering versus what the republican voters in the iowa caucusing are going to think. communication strategist and former aide to house speakers ryan and boehner, thank you so much for coming on, brendan buck. thank you to you for getting up "way too early" on this thursday morning. "morning joe" starts right now. ukraine is the first line of defense for us, and the problem that vivek doesn't understand is, he wants to hand ukraine to russia. he wants to let china eat taiwan. he wants to go and stop funding israel. you don't do that to friends. what you do -- >> false. >> -- is you have the backs of your friends. ukraine is a front line of defense. putin has said, if russia -- once russia takes ukraine, poland and the batics are next. that's a world war. we're trying to prevent war. look what putin did today. he killed prigozhin. when i was at the u.n., the russian ambassador suddenly died. this guy is a murderer, and you are choosing a murderer over a pro american country. [ applause ] >> first of all -- >> mr. ramaswamy, you have 30 seconds. governor desantis -- >> i wish you well on your future careers on the border of raytheon -- >> i'm not. you know -- >> you have been pushing this lie -- >> you know what? we want to go and defund israel? you want to -- >> let me address that. i'm glad you brought that up. >> you want to -- >> i'll address each of those right now. the false lies -- >> you make america less safe. you will make america less safe. you have no foreign policy experience, and it shows. it shows. >> you know what? >> frazier is down. frazier is down. >> yeah. >> welcome to "morning joe.
