Georgia. The National Hurricane center says it will cross into california as a Tropical Storm tomorrow. We will keep you posted throughout the hour as news develops. Joining me now, congresswoman nikki port williams, democrat of georgia. Congresswoman, thank you for joining us tonight. Let me go right to it. Your home state is at the center of the nations attention this week. Because this weeks indictment from fani willis, donald trump is expected to turn himself into authorities in Fulton County by the end of this coming week. Willis has proposed the former president stand trial in march. Some legal experts expect donald trump and his legal team to try to have his state trial in georgia move to a federal court, citing a federal law allowing an officer of the u. S. Government facing State Charges to move their case if that originates from the federal tenure. Trump was shut down in his attempt to move this january 6th trial out of washington, where he claimed he cant get a fair trial in a town that is overwhelmingly voting for democrats. What do you think it is important that trump faces justice specifically in georgia . Well, thank you reverend for pointing out the way this is all playing out. Because what we know happens in Fulton County, no one, not even a failed president , a failed former price it, it is above the law. And my District Attorney, fani willis, its going to make sure we are holding him accountable, because the law must be applied equally. We are going to see the former failed president arraigned just like anyone else whos broken the law in Fulton County, and hes going to be processed at the right straight jail. I think, looking at everything that happens, leading up to georgias 16 Electoral College votes being called for joe biden and the days leading up to that, and the days after, it was Fulton County. It was the fifth congressional district, the biden bells, i like to call it, that sealed the deal and gave joe biden the presidency. The first time in 28 years georgia voted for a democrat in a president ial election cycle. And donald trump was calling into georgia to try and change those votes. So that he could remain president. And it just didnt turn out that way, no matter how many times the votes were counted. It was all still the same. Donald trump lost not once, not twice, but three times. Every time the votes were counted. And now, trying to move this trial out of Fulton County, we are the voters in Fulton County many forces heard, we had a District Attorney who has laid everything out for everyone to see. And we are going to see donald trump and 18 of his coconspirators, names, brought to justice in Fulton County. This isnt about a political party. It is not about any kind of winning or not winning. This is about protecting our democracy and thats exactly what i expect at distributing to do. And there are some legal experts who argue, even though he may have still been president , this was outside the scope of his office of trying to change the election. But trump has met numerous attacks against fani willis on social media, leading up to and since the indictment has come down. Accusing her of misconduct and suggesting that shes a racist pursuing a political agenda. Trump supporters on the right wing Media Platforms not only echoed those attacks, but often with even more threatening language. I saw it this weekend that you now have at least one Georgia Stripe Summiteer calling for impeachment of willis and four state Governor Brian Kemp to demand a special legislative session to address williss actions. Nbc news reporting that donald trump is expected to turn himself in, Fulton County, baylor then this thursday, according to three senior Law Enforcement officials familiar with the plan, are he worried that the verbal and online attacks wont give way to physical violence and atlanta . What weve seen is an uptake and political violence, especially when it comes to black women serving and political office. And donald trump continues to agitate his supporters and give them permission to move forward with the things like they did on january 6th. Hes already facing legal implications because of january 6th, but nothing has changed. And thats what it is so important we hold him accountable, right here in Fulton County, and i am glad that we have a District Attorney who is willing to stand up on the side of what is fair and just, regardless of the political consequences. She shouldnt have to be subjected to the threats that shes getting antifear of not even being able to go to her own home because of donald trump and the people that followed him, that hes given permission to incite violence in our country. But this is what we are up against. But fani willis is determined to bring everyone to justice, regardless of what the consequences are. I keep telling people, this is our civil rights moment, reverent, and what we do with it is up to us. We have to step up and be the leaders that the people who came before us taught us to be. So i am grateful that this is all leading up to the anniversary of the March On Washington. Because we for for this right to vote. And now we have to do our part to continue this legacy that you and others left behind for us. You know that anniversary of that march is this saturday. Were having a Big March Around Issues of today. The bad news is that were facing, still, some racism, bias, bigotry, homophobia and misogyny today and we must march next saturday to deal with that. But the good news ill be right there with you i know you will. The good news though is that we wouldnt have any black District Attorneys and Fulton County had that not marched on that 16 years ago, for a black judge in washington, and you take over the seat. You succeeded the seat of john lewis who was the youngest of the speaker 16 years ago, and youll be there 60 years later continue the fight. But while we are talking about potential violence over this and document, we learned this week that Trump Supporters over this Fringe Website that we wont stain publish the names and it forces of several members of the Fulton County grand jury that indicted trump and the 18 other codefendants. Both Fulton County police and the fbi said they are aware of the threats and then working together on securing. But what do you take away from this . But even impartial jurors have been put in danger . Reverend, its the same thing they did. If you look at the indictment, and there were people who came to specifically threaten ms. Ruby freeman and her daughter, it is the same thing. These were election day workers. People sign up to go and work the polls, year after year after year, never thinking that would be subjected to Death Threats or a target put on their. Back by the sitting president of the united states. And this is par for the course. This is what they do. They are trying to threaten and bully people into silence, so they can continue to push the agenda forward. But we understand, in georgia, the cradle of the civil rights movement, we understand what task is before us and we are not going to turn around just because someone is trying to scare us into silence. It seems like theres one for donald trump and one for Everybody Else. It seems like were seeing democrats weaponize the legal system against political opponents. This is about revenge, not justice. This is and document 200. An effort by the ruling party, the democratic party, across states and the federal government to make sure that anybody who criticizes them gets indicted. From the department of justice, all the way down to the state the as, actually conspiring to stop President Trump from when it took us 24 election. With me as president , on day one, Christopher Wright gets sent packing. Youre going to see the doj cleared out. We are going to ensure a single standard of justice and this country again. What do you make of republicans continued allegiance to trump, especially those competing against him and the primaries . Because and that way they can still tow the line in case President Trump doesnt end up continuing in this race and they need his voters. And that is simply the only answer i have. It is pretty clear, especially in this indictment, particularly, that you can question the phone call to the former secretary of state on where President Trump was asking for 11th 11,700 more votes. You can interpret that either way that you would like. However, there are other scenarios that you cannot wiggle yourself out of. For example, the fake electors. Nevada had six states electors. And theres only one answer to that. Is that the effect that did corroborate at some degree. And the effect that the congresswoman, who you just had on, i agree with her. That President Trumps rhetoric has given the green light for those who are devoted to him. And to believe they are also part of this Victim Mentality that there is this, two tiered Justice System that is out to get you if you are a republican. And so, youve had people like here, once again, the state party in nevada take it out on individuals who dont agree 100 with the maga message. And so you saw them censure a secretary of state, bob russell gesky, because she refused to play into this game. And then you also have over 200 members being removed because we questioned what was going on and did not cave to face systemic voter fraud that they were pushing. It is a problem, and in the legislature we also passed making a faculty to harass poll and Election Workers. It has become a problem. Ection let us switch gears. Trump has decided to snap the first republican president ial primary debate on wednesday, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. Those sources say he is instead stating a sitdown interview with former fox news host Tucker Carlson. But Trump Spokesperson told nbc news, quote, they havent confirmed anything on their end. Is skipping the debate a good idea for trump . Could it be an opportunity for the other candidates at the same time . Yes, and yes. The reason that being is trumps his own worst enemy. He doesnt know when to keep his mouth shut. And so he could for it will do more damage, if he goes on that stage. Hes so far ahead, he truly doesnt need to attend. However, i do believe thats a disservice to the voters. Because you dont want to hear, maybe he has changed his perspective on certain policy issues. Maybe hes somebody who you dont necessarily foal and line with again and throw somebody else you would prefer in their presentation. So i think that you have both Turkey Colson and President Trump who are excellent with the pr skills and if this does move forward, kudos to Tucker Carlson for being able to get this. But once again, this is President Trump sucking all the air out of the room and stealing Everybody Else thunder. Lets bring in basil. Basil, you are very much a political, i would say, wizards. Let me ask you this. The Biden Campaign is expecting the candidates to try to, quote, out maga each other on the stage, at the debate, on winds that not malarkey. It goes on to mention, the same memo, that the debate is a race for the maga base. Not a pathway to winning the general election in 2024. That is in quotes. How do you see the primary shaking up, in which bidens best plan of attack as he prepares for the general election no matter what they do on wednesday night . In terms of japan, i think the best plan of attack is to do what hes doing. Make sure the economy is solid, engage a lot of Younger Voters who are concerned about everything from rising Mortgage Prices to student loan debt. So make sure that coalition that was so helpful in 2020 and 2022 midterms, independent voters, young voters, but also disaffected republicans. Make sure that coalition stays intact. And i think the memo is correct in saying that the gop is probably going to focus more on, from a debate stage standpoint, on attacking donald trump. But the reality is, none of them have the language or have spoken in a way that would make them at all successful, or at least competitive, in my view, in a general election. Their focus, as we said before, it was getting the donald trump voters. But if you are trump light, what not just go for the original . Thats number one. And number two, if you are on that stage and you spend all your time going after donald trump, i remember someone named Chris Christie who into thousand 12, then president obama comes to his state after super storm instantly and christy embraces him to thank him for coming to support the state. He spent years afterwards trying to explain that away, because he was getting attacked by other republicans. That kind of posture doesnt bode well for a general election. Basil, right now, Hurricane Hilary is barreling towards Southern California. It places it on a Collision Course with several wildfires burning in the golden state. This comes as three wildfires crew Out Of Control last weekend in maui. In hawaii. It spread by strong winds from Hurricane Dora that passed the island. Killing more than 100 people. Could these environmental threats placed the efforts to address Climate Change higher on the political agenda . I definitely think it does. Again, this is something that democratic voters generally, certainly a lot of Younger Voters, my students, talk about this issue constantly. It is something that i do believe i give the democrats and turbine credit for tackling. But again, this is an area, if youre in the administration, youre going on the campaign. These are issues that will end up working out young voters who care very deeply about this. When i was growing up, i am genetics. The movement of my era was antiapartheid. For so many young voters right now, it is a Climate Change. It is criminal justice reform. So all of these issues, i think, again, as long as the Administration Campaign starts talking about it, Making Policy around, it i do think it helps to mobilize voters. Many young men had their lives ruined as that were criminalized and tossed into the Prison System for minor offenses. And some of them lost their lives, entirely due to heavyhanded police tactics. We still remember their names, such as and patrick horseman. Some americans forgot all of this after 9 11. When rudy became americas mayor. But 2008, he even seemed briefly like i viable president ial candidates. But in the, and rudy squandered his political redemption by hefting hitching his wagon to donald j trump. Rudy help trump get elected in 2016 and thought he would be repaid with a cabinet position. But instead, trump left him on the outside as an attack dog, political dirty trickster, like when he was traveling to ukraine to dig up dirt on hunter biden. Now giuliani is in legal hot water for the win of trumps dirty work. In addition to the georgia and documents, he faces a Defamation Lawsuit from two Election Workers in georgia, who say they were targeted after giuliani accused them of counting fake ballots. Joining me now with more on the legal implications of Donald Trumps fourth and document, civil rights attorney alfonso david, president and ceo of the global black economic forum. Mr. David, alfonso, thanks for being with us again tonight. My audience and i want to hear the latest developments in your Legal Defense of the black women lead Venture Capital Firm Fearless funds, not a target of a Conservative Groups lawsuit alleging that the firm is racially discriminatory in a lot of the Supreme Courts recent Affirmative Action rolling. But before we go to, that i have to ask, for your analysts as an attorney of Donald Trumps fourth and document in georgia and the blatantly racist threats that fani willis and company have increasingly faced because of it. What were your thoughts this week as you got a chance to read through details of the indictment . Thank you for having me again on your show. I took a look at the indictment and i think the Georgia Election case is a watershed moment in this country. The indictment, as we all know, 98 pages, 19 defendants, 41 counts, with seven charges against the former president of the united states, it is really stunning. We have never seen the breadth and scope of the criminal claims that weve seen here against the former president. And i think it should be a clarion call to all of us about how fragile a democracy is. Anyone reading the indictment should appreciate that based on these facts, we were a few steps away from effectively eroding and losing our democracy. And this should alarm all of us, regardless of political affiliation or ideology. And as you know, there are a number of counts in the complaint, i heard the segment earlier about the r. I. C. O. Case that giuliani brought in new york. There is a difference between federal r. I. C. O. And state r. I. C. O. Statutes. And here, the claims are being brought under the Georgia Racketeering Influenced and corrupt organizations act. It is a state r. I. C. O. And it allows the prosecutor to bring a claim against a group of people for criminal acts that alleged to have been taken place both in georgia and outside of the state, in the furtherance of a conspiracy. And that is essentially what the statute was created to do. To hold people accountable where they are furthering a conspiracy. And in this case, to overturn the outcome of the president ial election in georgia. I think there is a strong case and i think that the defendants are going to have a very difficult time defending it. Trumps former Chief Of Staff mark meadows, it couldve ended in the georgia case, has asked to move his case to federal court. Some have said the former president could do the same if the georgia case where to go to a federal court. Resulting in a conviction. And trump was, to be reelected as president , would that then give him the ability to self pardon if that were to happen . Lets remember here, a president cannot pardon state crimes. So trump doesnt have the ability, if hes reelected, to pardon himself. Because president ial pardons are only applicable to federal crimes. Here, he is being brought up on charges for violating georgia criminal law. The georgia r. I. C. O. Statute, conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer violations of criminal law. Even if they are successful in changing the venue, he still has to be held accountable to georgia criminal statutes. And president s dont have the ability to pardon them selves for State Violations of law. Okay. Now this week more than 70 Venture Capital firms, many of them headed by black women signed an open letter denouncing the Federal Civil Rights lawsuit against your clients, the atlantabased fearless fund, veasey fund. Created to provide resources to black women businesses and business vendors. And now being accused of Racial Discrimination over monetary award targeting black women by Conservative Group whose founder was central to the Supreme Court decision to overturn the Affirmative Action and college admissions. We invited on this show last weekend, and i saw it this week, the Atlanta Community peg into a town hall in support of them this week. Former Atlanta Mayor and Biden White House adviser spoke in support as well. What can you tell us about other developments this week . This was a very successful week for the two founders of fellows fund. I have to say, these are strong courageous women who are not backing down. We have a very strong legal team of lawyers involved in the case. We have the naacp Legal Defense fund. The national womans law center as well as Daniel Connally from latham watkins. Were all working to metro these women are able to continue the work that is so incredibly necessary. This case is ostensibly about two black women who are running a Venture Capital funds with the goal of supporting other women of color. But, this is also a about a lot more. This case is really about whether or not we support equity and equality. It is about whether or not we are going to make sure we hold up the gains we have successfully obtained over decades. We know the difference between equality and equity. And we have not yet achieved that yet, thats what this case is about. Were going to be moving fork with pleadings in court and i believe were going to be successful. And i, note the two women and youll be part of the March On Washington a week from today. Before we lose you, alfonso, i want to ask you about your work as head of global black economic forum. And your view on economic rights for human rights. How does the form room. Give us a peek on just how you see this as a human rights issue. I think, if were not dressing economic inequalities were not really going to achieve equality or equity or any of the things were fighting for. When mark lizza gave a speech, the i have a dream speech, the wealth gap was 8 to 1. It is now 12 to 1. This should not be a bright versus blue issue. It should not be a black person white issue. If you believe in capitalism, we of course have to believe in an open market. But we had we cannot be blind to the dysfunction of the market. We cannot embrace efficiency but ignore theory caught in the wheel that prevents true efficiency. The work for doing is about innovation, about progress. We need to be thinking about where the next founder is. The next business you havent heard about that can transform our lives, that are not receiving the support they need to realize their vision. In this case and the work that im to win, it is about ensure we can achieve economic opportunity, which ultimately leads to freedom at its core here. Society cannot create and sustain disparities across industries, and then struck people of their rights to be themselves. And address those disparities. And thats what we are working for, and thats what im working not only on behalf of these two defendants, these two women who are operating fearless funds, but on behalf of all racial minorities across the country. On wednesday, transgender youth and North Carolina lost texas to genderaffirming medical treatments after the republican led General Assembly overrode the governors veto of the legislation, severely limousine transgender rights and the state. Joining me now to talk about it, kara johnson. Shes the Executive Director of the national lgbtq task force. Thank you for joining me tonight. Miss johnson, good to see you. Thank you, good to see you. Lets start with the north caroline bill. They are now the 22nd state to register a ban, or ban genderaffirming care for transgender minors. The American Medical Association says genderaffirming care is considered safe and medically necessary and the legislation does not stop it. It also targets transient participation in sports and restrict Lgbtq Curriculum and the classroom. What are your thoughts on all of this and whats being done to fight back . In addition to dehumanizing young people and children, we are also being faced with elected officials who are not representing the people. The reality is, voters, the people in North Carolina have been fighting against anti lgbtq loss for years now. And the General Assembly actually passed this law in the face of what they know if carolinian people have said they wanted. And that is something we need to be deeply, deeply afraid of. Dehumanizing children, deciding that transgender children are not worthy of care and they are full of humanity and rights. It is just an abomination. People should be in an uproar. We are watching lgbtq issues, black history, the impact of feminism being erased from curriculums across the country. And the question is, whose history is next . Weve got some real fighting to do and i just want to say, my hat is off to Governor Cooper who has really tried to champion all north carolinians including lgbtq people, and this is going to be a time of galvanization from this point forward. Target said this week it would make modifications to its Pride Month Collection after a backlash against some of the merchandise contributed to a drop in sales for the retailer. We have seen several Large Companies attacked for simply trying to acknowledge or sofie lgbtq customers. As they would any other group. What is your take on the Boycott Campaigns and how companies are responding to them . Listen, ive said this before and ill say it again. Nobody wants a fair with our friend. The community, and when i say the community, i dont just mean lgbtq people. I mean colleagues, friends, families, neighbors, pierres. We want to see targets and other businesses continue to support equality and equity, in a deep way, and not be transactional about it. Unfortunately i dont think target gets, and some of his other companies, that when you dont follow and lead with your values, you actually your brought a peel does suffer. I have to say, some of the people who believe inequality and equity who are looking for companies to stand up and be bald in standing your values. And until they do that, unfortunately, i think they may continue to see a fall in sales. Next saturday, a week from today, i join Mark Luther King the thirds but and jonathan from the Anti Defamation League to knots just host a commemoration of the anniversary of the March On Washington, but a continuation of the fights at the Lincoln Memorial, where you will also be speaking. Can you speak to how the struggles for black americans, particularly women and those who are part of the Lgbtq Community and other communities, how they faced it 60 years ago and it is still prevalent today. I remember a reading, i was too young to go to the march, i was eight years old. I dont Think Jonathan was born. Jonathan greenblatt, im talking about. But i remember was pushed back because he was gay 60 years ago. And now we are putting out front everybodys rights. Kierra, tell me how you see the intersection of all these flights that will be demonstrated at Lincoln Memorial next weekend. It feels like a dream realized in a lot of ways. I cant tell you how excited and humbling it is to be a part of a continuation of the fight for civil rights, for all people. Right . We know that social change isnt linear. We know that there is no generation that is going to solve the ills of any one community. Anyone governments. But to be a part of this fight, they struggle, this moment, it just feels so big. You know, im one of the first, right, im the first black Executive Director of the national kierra task force. And we get to join, right, all of these other people of color and black folks taking leadership of Social Justice organizations across issue. And it feels really good. And it feels rides. The same tactics we have seen our opposition apply 60 years ago, dehumanization, making it hard to vote, erasing our history, bullying in schools, separate but equal. We are seeing that, those same tactics, be it used today to try to divide us. And all of us up on that stage and in that march next week, sent a very strong message, thats not going to work on us.
