Those efforts by donald trump and his lawyers to subvert democracy has, in a small part, led the american varshini to create a task force for American Democracy. It will focus on three things. Depoliticizing how elections are administered. Educating the public on the principles of our democracy. And advancing improvements in Election Systems in order to root out distrust, sowed by certain political leaders. Joining us now the cochairs of this newly formed task force. The continuing false claims, to this day, that the 2020 president ial election was stolen from the former president and the republicans, those claims have laid waste to americans confidence in their elections, and also to their faith in American Democracy. The president mary smith announcing this Blue Ribbon Task force of the nations one and a half million lawyers said that we lawyers must run to the storm, all americans must run to the storm, joe, that is the crisis of American Democracy today. Jay johnson, on that note how does the Task Force Plan to do that . To run to the storm . What actions and policies will you be pushing to try and reach the goal of the three points laid out as we introduce this task force, including educating the public . So, first, thank you for having us on, im honored to serve as a cochair with judge luttig who was one of the heroes of january six, in my opinion. Serving with him on this task force to strengthen our democracy, to recommend how we strengthen our democracy would be the capstone of my Public Service career. Everything is going to be on the table in my opinion from not only looking at how we educate young people, American Civics but also how our cybersecurity, social media, conventional media contribute to or detract from our democracy. To the very manner in which we elect candidates for federal office in our country. Weve put together a really extraordinary distinguished, non partisan, Bipartisan Group of americans to look at this with us. Retired former judges like judge luttig, including the former Chief Justice of the ohio Supreme Court two former candidates for president , Carli Fiorina and they kept part, historians, scholars people like bill kristol, Sharon Eiffel the former head of the naacp Legal Defense funds. Were gonna take the next year to go on basically a Listening Tour around the country. Were gonna do our own research, develop recommendations that we will deliver a year from now that i hope and belief will be implementable and gain support among the American People. This group is, by the way, not limited to just lawyers. Lawyers dont have a corner and a monopoly on wisdom. There are a number of just basic patriotic americans who want to help us out. Jeh, this is claire, good morning to you judge, im hopeful that in this process there will be some effort to look at the lawyers who have violated their oath to the law, and to the constitution by Embracing The Big Lie and the fraud. Do you all plan on looking on how well are lawyers policing themselves as it relates to supporting our democracy . But, certainly, at 40,000 of foot level, the task force will address the profound obligations of lawyers under the constitution and the rule of law. Ive a question for Secretary Johnson, im not a lawyer, i am married to one, i would never say that lawyers are not important because of that, however in this case, our government was built on a system of checks and balances, one of the things i think people are concerned about democracy in the future point to of failure is the inability to [inaudible] barely hold them together, by that i look at the second impeachment and the idea of that was he is out of office, in fact it was a political issue, the second impeachment, it was punted down the road. My questions to you guys, how directly will you work with elected officials on the task force . How directly will you work with elected officials to persuade them as the judge did in the lead up to january six of the critical nature of democracy and its fragility to . Thats a good question. We do expect to engage first of all, State Secretaries of state who are responsible for running elections in their respective jurisdictions, one of the missions of this task force, in my view, needs to be looking at what incentivizes political actors to engage in extremist rhetoric, extremist behavior, what incentivizes them when you have over Something Like 400 safe seats in the house of representatives, to basically in their respective constituencies. When it comes to the issue of lawyers, clear, this is what happens when a president systematically drives the administration, anybody interested in maintaining the guardrails and has left nothing but people who are simply yes men in his administration. The idea that this is something that america does not have a vital interest in, to me is just absurd. And certainly, the Pro Life Groups and the republican legislators decided, we are going to rig things, we are going to change the rules, we are going to require 60 because we know the majority of the people dont want women to have their Health Care Decisions decided by men in state legislators. 57 of ohio voters say no to rigging the process. 43 said yes. But caddie, that almost certainly ensures that this fall, ohio will be yet another republican state that pushes back against the abolition of roe. Yeah, republicans want to make it so you couldnt change part of the constitution without 60 , having 60 for decades, it is been 50 , that is been fine for all the other amendments that theyve had in the past. But when abortion was on the ballot, they want to make it that much harder for pro Abortion Rights people to do it. Actually, that 57 is not that far off from the 60 that they were mandating. What is next tornado this is, it is august. A quarter of august, this is not even a vote on abortion, this is a vote on an amendment to the constitution that is potentially about abortion. And even so, ohioans turnout in huge numbers and the campaign that theyve been camping on Probation Rights and thought this might be close. This reminds me of kansas, this reminds me of that first vote we had where we were all surprised by the margins of victory for the pro Abortion Rights group. And here we are, a good more than a year after dobbs and it is still rallying people 57 . That is a big victory for the pro Abortion Rights. A huge victory, just a huge victory in wisconsin. It is always been very close. A huge victory in kansas, another state that was red. Time and time again, you look at these polls, they just dont tell tell. Are gonna vote for the guy for people that follow closely, are we gonna vote for the guy as well . S off his bike instead for the guy who tries to take over the federal government with a right and said he wanted to terminate the constitution. You dont put other issues in their, and suddenly you get closer, its like 2022, remember the red wave of 2022 . Neither do i, you know i . It never happened. You know why never happened . Abortion is a big issue, also some people, i know its if you write for the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page on fox news. Some people love American Democracy. We are kind of oldfashioned that way. I dont know, it is looking for us for 244 years. We like to keep it for another 240 years. So you add abortion and actually American Democracy, because americans arent as stupid as editorial writers from the Wall Street Journal page over the last week had believed them to be. They see through the lies, they see through the gaslighting. They decide, hey, this is really troubling. Maybe this guy over here can ride a bike if he wasnt swimming so much. This other guy, he falls off a bike once in a while. But wait a second, he actually believes in the constitution of the United States. You have that an abortion together and it has been a potent, potent political punch in the gut against republicans who have been trying to take away womens rights. And womens rights, you bring up a good point here because i think what we are seeing here is that ben and women are seeing Health Care Being taken away from their families, from their loved ones. And while it is an issue of a womans right to choose, it is also an issue of a familys health of a husband watching her husband, his wife have to plead out because she cant get him the medication she needs for a fetal abnormality. This is an issue now that goes across the board. And Men And Women understand what has happened over the past few years with rights being taken away. Right to health care. When you look, sam stein, at these numbers, 59 in kansas, 57 in ohio, again red, red states. In Landslide Victory in the Supreme Court, up in wisconsin, republicans called the most important race in years. When you see that happening, you dont get to 57, 58, 59 with only the women that went to the womens march in 2017. You dont get there with left wing activists, you dont get there with women, you get there with women, men, young, old, black, white, hispanic, you name it. This is an issue that cuts across all demographics. And it is shocking to me that the republicans still have their head buried in the sand on this issue. Another election, i dont know if they know it or not, is coming up next year. To because point, men are involved in the pregnancy. Obviously, we dont carry the burden of the pregnancy, but we feel very much part of the process and i think it resonates, the issue of abortion for men as much as women. If you look at the issue on ideological grounds, there was a recent poll that showed that Something Like 35 to 40 of republicans were upset over the dobbs decision. Those numbers dont really happen in many other issues. I think the proof now is in the putting so to speak. We have three major elections, probably more in the city of kansas and wisconsin, ohio. Where it is very evident that Abortion Rights is an incredible motivator. I would just add that in ohio, kathys, right they try to sneak some municipal election in the middle of august. It was fairly transparent what the anti choice crowd was trying to do. And i think it backfired pretty badly obviously with voters who felt like they were just being hoodwinked, who felt like theyre being taken advantage of. It is already a bold proposition to ask voters to willingly vote to reduce their ability to change the States Constitution in the future, but to do it in the fashion that they did and these organizers did to try to sneak it in any new selection in august, i think it was insulting frankly to a lot of ohioans. It proved to be insulting by these numbers. To think about Donald Trumps Republican Party, one, they tried to take away a president ial election. To, they line up in support, and i wont name the Editorial Page again that does it, they line in support of a fake electors conspiracy plot. That their own people knew it was on constitutional, that their own people knew would be overturned by the United States Supreme Court. But they were doing it to confuse the issue and to delay a constitutional process. And they wanted to throw out the votes of millions and, millions of americans in seven states. Then go to tennessee. Again, more anti democracy nonsense. They actually kick black members of the tennessee legislator out because they dare raise their voices. They let the white woman stay in though. That is interesting. Justice, i dont know, republicans certainly arent brined. Your black legislator in tennessee, and you speak up, and speak out, they kick you out. And now you go to ohio, but we have . First of all, you have the women of ohio, they have the right to make Health Care Decisions for themselves . Our parents of tenure girls who are raped, who have to flee the state so they can make Health Care Decisions themselves. First republicans take that right away from ohio women. And ohio families, and ohio doctors. Then they come up with the scheme and say, now we are going to take away your right to amend the constitution the way we have done it for years. And we are going to sneak it in in august, and youre going to ask you now to get 60 , to try to claw back to get the right we have already taken away from women in ohio. And across america. As cathy said before, this is august. August is such a get month politically. I will tell you, any campaign, the four campaigns iran, they basically shut down in august because everybody is gone. Nobody is focused on anything, they are finishing their vacations, theyre getting their kids ready back for school, they are getting there ready for the fall. Theyre getting ready for everything. As cathy said, ohio voters flooded to the polls to tell these antidemocracy republicans know. One person, one vote, majority rules in these referendums. You cannot change the rules mid strain. You want to continue taking away the rights of women to make decisions over their own bodies. President biden celebrated after issue one failed. And the adam as asian of society that has brought about or accelerated by smartphones and social media and the like. I tell you all this because for me, its not just a story, for me it could very well be a matter of life and death. There are a total of four trans athletes in the state of utah, can we not find a compassionate solution to help these four kids. This isnt a political, this isnt politics, this is for kids. And i thought it was brilliant, i thought it was beautiful, i thought is exactly what America Needs to hear. And it was human, the governor got fierce and it was human. That is the problem i guess. He got fierce blow back from that. He has other times as well, you recall during his campaign, he shook hands with his opponent, they had to have a ballot was philippi that debate. I want to say, i think its especially important to have a welcoming like that, which we should all the time, but especially hours after it was revealed this assassination in that state, in utah. And assassination plot that was seemingly fueled by some of this online hate and rhetoric so often exposed by the governors party, and by doing this, by saying this is our president , he is welcome in our home, hes welcoming all state. Extraordinarily important message. It is for both sides and in other people i see all the time, i think their policies are damaging america. You sit there and you talk to them, you try to figure out if you can meet them somewhere halfway and sometimes you cant. But you just keep trying. If you love this country, i think you keep trying. We are all being optimistic, we have all got together, we are holding sands and reaching out to make this world a better place you can. Tom, you were the harbinger of doom this morning. This was a very, very tough to call him for me to write because i am cheering for the trials and cheering for conviction. Youre cheering because you think hes guilty. Absolutely. I dont think we can head load into a sense of security here. Because of that, don trump will not be our next president. First, i think he has a lot on the republican nomination. I think that even if a trial does happen early next year, i think by Super Tuesday March 5th he is likely to have enough delegates to win the nomination before we have a verdict and a trial. Not that i think even a televised trial is going to do that much to dissuade his primary voters with all of the advocacy and public arguments that will happen in the courtroom that he shouldnt be convicted. And then, i think look, as we were discussing, biden can win a oneonone race with trump. The Abortion Issue is strong, the anti democracy sentiment among suburban independent womens strong. It was strong in 2020, what has been revealed since then and how egregious the packs have been i think would show up that constituency. But to the discussion we were just having, people want a reach across the aisle option. No labels, which is a very serious thirdparty effort to get on 50 state ballots, and they are already on some, its gonna be unity ticket. By definition, a reach across the aisle ticket. And it does not take a lot of deep analysis to look at what happened in 2016 where in a swing states 47 of the vote went to Third Party Candidates and drained away from Hillary Clinton. And in 2020, biden was able to win back much of that vote because the independent third party vote was about 1 . Attorney general, thank you so much for being with us. I have noted on this show over the past several years, republicans like yourself, republicans that have stood up and spoken out for the rule of law, even when it doesnt break in the direction. I often quote the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, whenever theyve spoken out against Donald Trumps worst excesses. I have noticed though, since the last indictment regarding january the 6th, that Establishment Republicans that had been critical of Donald Trumps actions are now starting to talk about the two cured Justice System. And you know, i read something that Anne Applebaum said last week that said, if the Republican Party continues to attack the rule of law, i dont know how our Constitutional Republic survives. That is why we were so struck by your opinion piece. So grateful for you to be here. Can you talk about your concerns about the rule of law, the Republican Party, and how it intersects in this Trump Indictment . Sure, thanks for having me. Listen, i dont view my presence here or the oped i wrote as intended to set the republicans astray. Mainly to remind republicans about what we stand for. And in particular, to stand up for the department of justice so people dont realize that over 99 of the people who work at the Department Are career employees. They often dont carry the president s, what part of the attorney generals. So they go to work day in a day out and i just wanted to remind people that i think that the department is doing the very best you can. Im not saying that they are perfect, sometimes mistakes are made. I want to point out. Fine, largely do a good job and the differences that occurs sometimes in prosecutions are based upon facts, based on the evidence. Based upon the judgment and experience of the prosecutor. And so sometimes youre going to have perhaps different outcomes in cases that look similar, but may in fact be very different because of the facts in the evidence that a prosecutor is able to present any trial. Again, this is about a reminder of who we are as a party, part of the rule of law, a party for economic and individual liberty, a party for National Security and our military. A party that believes in the value, the importance of law enforcement. That is who we are as a party, and again, that was a motivation for the op ed. Brian, just to underline something that you said. There are career professionals, most people in the Justice Department are. And for republicans, for donald Trump Supporters who are saying, what about Hillary Clinton, what about hunter biden, let me underline again the fact that donald trump wanted Hillary Clinton indicted in the Department Justice in his own attorney general said that there wasnt anything to indict her on. So those arguments are absolutely without merit. Mister attorney general, i want to underline once again what you said and have you continue talking about it. I have noticed that my former party, which used to support law enforcement, since Donald Trumps become president , many people in that party have attacked the department of justice for relentlessly. They have attacked the fbi relentlessly. Talk about the importance of republicans doing what republicans used to do, and that is defending the rule of law and defending the Justice Department that holds that on its shoulders every day. Those professionals. Well, we all as american citizens have an obligation to respect and protect the rule of law. Lets just get that straight. Put that on the table. But it is the department of justice, it has a primary responsibility as a Government Institution to protect the rule of law. To ensure that people engage in conduct that is consistent with the laws passed by representatives of the American People. And the more the department is criticized, and sometimes the criticism is valid, theres no question about, mistakes can be made because the department is run and comprised of human beings. We are all in perfect, sometimes we make mistakes and judgment. But by and large, to get it right. Of course, we have a system, rules of evidence and judges and infinite george to ensure that the department gets it right in terms of moving forward on prosecutions. But the more this criticism of the rule of law, i think the more people lose confidence in the governor justice and the government generally. I think that is a very dangerous position to be in. The fact that it is okay to criticize the department of justice and government officials, it is okay to ignore the rule of law. It is okay to ignore statutes, it is okay to ignore the constitution. That puts us in a very diverse place in my judgment. I think in the judgment of many. Many other americans, not just republicans in this country. Mister attorney general, theres an interesting article oped by Jack Goldsmith who was the white House Counsel in the bush administration. You may have read it, he is critical of the department of justice, then you have been, but his bigger point is however this case, however this trial and prosecution of donald trump pans out, it could end up weakening the Justice System in this country because if he is sent to prison or if he is found guilty, it will have a huge number of americans who believe that he is being unfairly treated. Is there a way around that you think . Is there a way that this trial could be conducted in such a way that actually it would restore faith in the execution of justice in this country. Well, one thing that is being discussed, im offering up an opinion about this as well, is to have Trump Federal trials are not televised and you know, this is a case where perhaps it calls for public so people can see how our Justice System works, you can see the evidence, that prosecution is going to present. Can see the defense thats put on by donald trump and have faith in the outcome, and the judgment of trump and a juror s. That might be one way this particular case where the American People may be more willing, despite what donald trump may say publicly, that American People may be more willing to accept the outcome of the trial. Is actually the one your birthday of the chips and science act signed into law, look micah, this is working, we are moving at a record pace here on the Chips Program office. We have 140 people on staff, we have received over 400 statements of interest from 42 states. That is significant because i think at one point there was a perception perhaps that only this funding would be going to the highly concentrated areas where it is very aggressive what we are seeing through the statements of interest is that there is widespread interest across the country and the chips and science act is going effect either american directly or indirectly. Also present biden took office, bidenomics is at work here. Over 500 Billion Dollars in the private Sector Investment has been pledged and 230 million of that is in the semiconductor industry. Hundred 66 million by the way since the chips and science act has been passed. We feel very good about the success of the program. We are moving at a record pace. And to the point on jobs, this is so critically important. We obviously know that the chips and science act is going to create hundreds of thousands of jobs. But at least 60 of those jobs are estimated to be jobs that dont require a college degree. That is critically important to getting people back to work in middle america. And getting back to in those jobs that like President Biden said so well, our jobs that give them dignity, jobs that have upward mobility in some of these Semiconductor Factories that create the semiconductors. We feel very good about the pace and it is very exciting to see how far weve come in one year. Adrian, you not have spoken about this before, and i just want to ask you a little bit for an update on the timing of this. Their mother and three of their older siblings or at the stretch when the test bomb that needed. Cancer diagnoses followed. My mom had cancer. She went down fast. So you had three brain tumors . It was one, but it would break out in grow again. So i was going blind. I think the reality is, most people, when they think of women and what were to think of rosy the river, or maybe a book or two about the spies and Code Breakers who served fine and any lines. You know, getting information for the allies. The reality is, the combination of women, women in uniform, is so much larger than that. So as you, mentioned over 350,000 American Women Served In Uniform in world war ii, which to give viewers a sense of scale about the size of the active duty navy today. So it is a big number. But even more important, the size of the contribution, was the actual content of the contribution. So, women were in critical support roles that are often underappreciated by most americans, when we think about why we won world war ii. So they were doing things like fixing planes, redeploying them, in the pacific, laying cable so headquarters could communicate on the front lines. Women were found in these essential positions, letting most people dont understand or fundamental to ally strategy. We sort of written these women often history, so this book is really my effort to be a correct to that larger rhetoric. Even as someone who studies wore for a living, and out of, interest you were surprised by the size and scale of the magnitude of the contributions of women. And, you feature 30 veterans, 30 women at least in this book from coordinate to charity adams, explain from test flying planes, two other efforts that really helped with morale. But i think in general, as many people could probably relate to after coming out of covid, when you have these national cataclysmic events, there is a desire to go back to normal. In 1945, normally four women looked like a return to the, homero turn to you know, homemaking and childbearing. They would go from staffing generous one day, to serving tier the next. And, there was a troubling undercurrent that a lot of their work was just a little too feminine, a little too peripheral to be real will work, that is why ruling heard people to ask about these stories.
