>> well first of all reverend al, thank you for having me on, happy mother's day to all. and, yes we have been speaking out as members of the congressional black caucus male and female because we know this will have a devastating, disproportionate effect on women of color especially black women. in 23 some states are constituents are contacting us because if this is overturned it will be immediately ban abortions in 23 some states even including my state, of ohio, we are speaking out, we have a chair of the pro-choice caucus congresswoman ayanna pressley has joined with me and others. congressman brenda lawrence of the women's caucus, congresswoman barbara lee, and even our male members of the cdc, because this devastating effect people could be incarcerated, whether that's the doctor, the nurse in participating. we know that 56% of black people live in the south, so we know it will happen whether it is incarceration, the legal process, it will disproportionately affected black folks. >> now congresswoman, what's your response to the news this weekend that 19 democrats wrote a letter to speak speaker pelosi friday calling on her to hold a vote on legislation that would increase police funding to address rises and crime, given that we still don't have police reform legislation, isn't unrealistic that some black voters might ask why this instead of that, and do you anticipate president biden or democrats making another push behind priest reform before november? >> well, absolutely, i can certainly speak for the congressional black caucus and where i stand, we are not giving up on police reform, we need to make sure that we go back to the table and while i want to make it clear, the house did pass the george floyd justice and policing act, it did not get through the senate, to get through the presidents does, but we're not giving up. we have met as members of the congressional black caucus, as leaders in the democratic caucus with the president, the president has been very positive, and i'm very hopeful that he will step up with an executive order. >> and let me be clear, we're not saying to be anti police, were saying that we can do both and not one or, and certainly want to see police -- congresswoman >> absolutely, that's so important it's about making sure that we re-channel funds into our communities, that we set up neighborhood commissions, that we get mental health advisers, we also need to make sure that those bad police officers aren't rehired. we need to make sure that all of those points in the george floyd, justice in policing don't go forgotten. >> that's, right we're a few days from the second anniversary of george floyd's killing, and i've been to your district and with you as we have to do a eulogy there for ham for the shooting that down. let me ask you this, can you comment on the significance of joe jill biden's visit to ukraine today as you hear colleagues, presidents aide request for ukraine and its defense, in a defensive war with russia. what is your feeling about doctor biden's trip? >> i think dr. jill biden, send a strong logic when we look at the number of women, the number of children, it's unthinkable that russia would go into a medical center and now a school with so many people every day losing their lives, i think that it gives them hope anchorage that we're standing with them, i think this week will see more aid going, more sanctions because this is justin thank-able. i'm pleased that dr. biden was there. >> congresswoman, what other concerns you want to see president biden addressed by executive order if need be before november, i'm thinking about voting rights as well as reform? >> well, let me tell you that voting rights is at the top of the list, we have still been looking in the congressional black caucus just last week we had an executive meeting where we are looking at if we can even get preclearance for all 50 states and get that through the senate. we're gonna come out with that, we're not giving up on voting rights, it's at the top of our list, if we need to also look at what's student debt is looking at, we hear a lot from our constituents about that. we know there is legislation that's looking at providing financial assistance for those with student debt, we know the president has also talked about providing assistance for those. we have a full play, we are continuing doing this off year presidential election, many of our primaries are underway, i think the good thing is democrats understand that elections have consequences. >> let me ask you about one thing that is critical to me, as we look at this battle around women's right to choose, and whether this leaked opinion will lead to the supreme court in many ways debunking the row decision of 1973. this can potentially lead to a whole new model of states rights deciding basic rights for people, which could include lgbtq rights, civil rights, voting rights. are you concerned that we are now in a nation that is beginning to see forces try to lean us back to where the state right model with national government doesn't interfere and protect us against state's rights? >> oh absolutely i think it's so important to speak up to speed back, get people registered and vote we must put all of our energies and here because you're right, once we've opened up pandora's box with this, it will be other rights for women, civil rights in jews as you mention, interracial marriage rights, lgbtq q, we have a lot to lose, we recognize that, and that's why we're fighting to make sure that we vote, and we vote in those judicial races. it's so important we have a pipeline, that was very fortunate for us that we had justice ketanji brown jackson, so we're very pleased that we now have a black woman in the highest court in the nation. we can't stop there, she can't do it alone. >> all, right thank you congresswoman joyce -- of the congressional black caucus. now for a quick update on the war in ukraine, joining me now is nbc's jake great, he's in lviv, ukraine, jay, first lady dr. jill biden made a surprise mother's day to the southwestern part of ukraine, which has been under a cat for the last ten days. and she met with the ukrainian president, what is the reaction you're seeing from doctor biden's visit today? >> reverend sharpton, the first lady ukraine called the visit by dr. biden a courageous act noting that the area where they spent a little bit of time is an area that had suffered attacks over the last ten days on a regular basis. the first lady said that she had to be there on mother's day, said it was important that we show the world is in the united states's behalf and -- supports ukraine and also said the war as western i want to make sure she got that message across. the ground residents here in lviv say they are proud that the first lady made it there also very thankful a member of the city council here in lviv and she said that the american people have been a tremendous help in this effort. she also said that they along with the government will share with the victory that she believes will be coming soon overall, you can sense from people on the ground here in ukraine that they will really appreciative of the first lady dr. jill biden was on the ground, and ventured into ukraine, not to staying on the border, that was very important to them. >> -- russian troops continue to advance into ukraine ahead of their annual may 9th holiday commemorating the soviet victory against nazi germany, what more can you add to the russian victory getting reaction there in lviv? >> there's clear a lot of tension across ukraine right now, we're worried about what's gonna happen as we move into victory day, there's been air raid sirens across the country today including here in lviv earlier. quiet right now, just after midnight, but again there's a lot of people under concern that russian troops on the ground here are frantically trying to give vladimir putin something that he can claim as a triumph on this victory day, as you know it's a day every year where he likes to flex the military muscle -- i could also tell you that today in the town square today there was an exhibition honoring the fallen, not only soldiers, but also civilians who've died a result of the russian invasion. when asked about it, the residents here say that tomorrow brings nothing to celebrate, there is no victory. they will celebrate victory when they've expelled russia from the country, but they do more -- they say, this is a sad time for their country. >> all right, nbc's jake -- and ukraine, thank you for be giving us that update. coming up, a salute to women in our lives this mother's day. and later we'll speak with the reproductive justice activist about why the supreme court's draft opinion on roe threatens more than just abortion access. but first, my colleague richard -- with today's other op to's new stories. richard. >> we have a very good sunday, stories in washington at this hour gas prices in the u.s. closing in on a new high, according to aaa the average price for a gallon of regular is $4.32 just one penny shy of the record set on march 11th that's up 13 cents from just a week ago. experts say the warren ukraine and the impending summer travel season are fueling that's by. -- a record amount of bedding in yesterday's kentucky derby, they had 200 and $74 million were wagered on derby day, which ended with the second biggest upset in the derby's 148 year history, the winner rich strike faced eight and one odds, them are just among all 20 horses. more politics nation with our now sharpton after the short break. w sharpton after the short break. break. ♪ ♪ ♪i'm so defensive,♪ ♪i got bongos thumping in my chest♪ ♪and something tells me they don't beat me♪ ♪ ♪ ♪he'd better not take the ring from me.♪ do your eyes bother you? >> thank you so much for having me today. what's real about intersectionality and what is important about reproductive justice is that when we think about not just the right to have an abortion, but the ability to access an abortion. the ability for us to think about ways that our race is black folks and folks of color impact the ways that we make decisions in this country. the fact that we are working against a system of white supremacy and fighting for abortion access is deeply connected to this issue as well. so we cannot look at our lives or even think about our organizing from single lens. we have to think about the ways in which all of our identities, all of the systems of oppression that we unfortunately have to live under and navigate in this country, come together when making a very personal decision about whether or not to continue a pregnancy or not. reproductive justice is a movement that was started by black women, because they understood that it was important for black women's voices and folks of color to move our experiences and our needs to the center of the conversations around sexual health and reproductive health in this country. so it is so real right now, as we are fighting this fight. this is a draft that was leaked, and something that unfortunately we knew was coming, because our opposition has been working very hard over the past couple of decades to move us to this moment where roe v. wade is in peril. it is important for us when we think about this, again, especially with folks of color, that we see the fullness of which this really means for us right now when you think about the spike for abortion acts. we have to think about not only caught defying the rate for that, but also ensuring that we create all that is necessary for us to be able to access that. >> reverend forbes, yesterday had alexis mcgill johnson, president of planned parenthood, first black woman. we were talking about how opponents have used abortion rights to people that are religious, to support their argument. they've used religion for why should be illegal. and you report from the pew research shows that well three quarters of white evangelicals want to mostly ban abortion. less than a third of black protestants support similar restrictions, overall the study finds most americans support some exception to any abortion ban, such as cases of rape or incest. in the most recent data from the cdc in 2019, black women had the highest rate of abortion with 24 abortions per 1000, and black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy related cause than white women. how does race and religion influence someone's view of abortion? influence someone's view o ab ortion while quite frankly, race has played a part in, historic lever black women, around issues around reproductive justice. we know that during times of slavery, black women were mutilated, abused, in the name of learning about the women's reproductive system. and so, race and reproduction justice are intricately linked because from the time we were brought here, as slaves, we were poked on, pulled on, and our rights to bodily autonomy either didn't exist, or barely existed. so, racing abortion are intricately linked and we're seeing that play out right to this day. >> monica, the senate will vote the vote next week to codify roe v. wade, though the chances of it passing are very slim. how does your organization plan to continue to help women if the supreme court does move to and legal abortion protections? zelenskyy at the leaders of g7. to discuss new sanctions on russia. and here in the u.s., congress is dirtying itself for votes on president biden's 30 through billion dollar aid request as early as this week. and for the escalating battle around abortion rights, after last week's week draft opinion potentially roe v. wade. senate democrats are preparing for this week to codify row that is unlikely to pass. as senate republicans led by minority leader mitch mcconnell say that a national abortion ban could be quote, possible. out in the streets protests continue across the country, nearly one week after the leak, civil rights activists like myself who are distressed by both the disproportionate impact on women of color and the legal battles that we know will follow this one. joining me now is congresswoman joyce beatty, democrat of ohio, chair of the congressional black caucus, congresswoman thank you for joining us tonight. i can only imagine tactically the position that you and your congressional black caucus colleagues find yourself, in knowing that roe v. wade is under threat, thinking about your black women constituents who already suffer from disproportionate deficit in reproductive care. while bearing the maternal mortality rate three times higher than their white counterparts according to the center for disease control. as chair of the cdc, would have the conversations been towards member been like this week, and have you heard from your constituents on this matter? >> well first of all reverend al, thank you for having me on, happy mother's day to all. and, yes we have been speaking out as members of the congressional black caucus male and female because we know this will have a devastating, disproportionate effect on women of color especially black women. in 23 some states are constituents are contacting us because if this is overturned it will be immediately ban abortions in 23 some states even including my state, of ohio, we are speaking out, we have a chair of the pro-choice caucus congresswoman ayanna pressley has joined with me and others. congressman brenda lawrence of the women's caucus, congresswoman barbara lee, and even our male members of the cdc, because this devastating effect people could be incarcerated, whether that's the doctor, the nurse in participating. we know that 56% of black people live in the south, so we know it will happen whether it is incarceration, the legal process, it will disproportionately affected black folks. >> now congresswoman, what's your response to the news this weekend that 19 democrats wrote a letter to speak speaker pelosi friday calling on her to hold a vote on legislation that would increase police funding to address rises and crime, given that we still don't have police reform legislation, isn't unrealistic that some black voters might ask why this instead of that, and do you anticipate president biden or democrats making another push behind priest reform before november? >> well, absolutely, i can certainly speak for the congressional black caucus and where i stand, we are not giving up on police reform, we need to make sure that we go back to the table and while i want to make it clear, the house did pass the george floyd justice and policing act, it did not get through the senate, to get through the presidents does, but we're not giving up. we have met as members of the congressional black caucus, as leaders in the democratic caucus with the president, the president has been very positive, and i'm very hopeful that he will step up with an executive order. >> and let me be clear, we're not saying to be anti police, were saying that we can do both and not one or, and certainly want to see police -- congresswoman >> absolutely, that's so important it's about making sure that we re-channel funds into our communities, that we set up neighborhood commissions, that we get mental health advisers, we also need to make sure that those bad police officers aren't rehired. we need to make sure that all of those points in the george floyd, justice in policing don't go forgotten. >> that's, right we're a few days from the second anniversary of george floyd's killing, and i've been to your district and with you as we have to do a eulogy there for ham for the shooting that down. let me ask you this, can you comment on the significance of joe jill biden's visit to ukraine today as you hear colleagues, presidents aide request for ukraine and its defense, in a defensive war with russia. what is your feeling about doctor biden's trip? >> i think dr. jill biden, send a strong logic when we look at the number of women, the number of children, it's unthinkable that russia would go into a medical center and now a school with so many people every day losing their lives, i think that it gives them hope anchorage that we're standing with them, i think this week will see more aid going, more sanctions because this is justin thank-able. i'm pleased that dr. biden was there. >> congresswoman, what other concerns you want to see president biden addressed by executive order if need be before november, i'm thinking about voting rights as well as reform? >> well, let me tell you that voting rights is at the top of the list, we have still been looking in the congressional black caucus just last week we had an executive meeting where we are looking at if we can even get preclearance for all 50 states and get that through the senate. we're gonna come out with that, we're not giving up on voting rights, it's at the top of our list, if we need to also look at what's student debt is looking at, we hear a lot from our constituents about that. we know there is legislation that's looking at providing financial assistance for those with student debt, we know the president has also talked about providing assistance for those. we have a full play, we are continuing doing this off year presidential election, many of our primaries are underway, i think the good thing is democrats understand that elections have consequences. >> let me ask you about one thing that is critical to me, as we look at this battle around women's right to choose, and whether this leaked opinion will lead to the supreme court in many ways debunking the row decision of 1973. this can potentially lead to a whole new model of states rights deciding basic rights for people, which could include lgbtq rights, civil rights, voting rights. are you concerned that we are now in a nation that is beginning to see forces try to lean us back to where the state right model with national government doesn't interfere and protect us against state's rights? >> oh absolutely i think it's so important to speak up to speed back, get people registered and vote we must put all of our energies and here because you're right, once we've opened up pandora's box with this, it will be other rights for women, civil rights in jews as you mention, interracial marriage rights, lgbtq q, we have a lot to lose, we recognize that, and that's why we're fighting to make sure that we vote, and we vote in those judicial races. it's so important we have a pipeline, that was very fortunate for us that we had justice ketanji brown jackson, so we're very pleased that we now have a black woman in the highest court in the nation. we can't stop there, she can't do it alone. >> all, right thank you congresswoman joyce -- of the congressional black caucus. now for a quick update on the war in ukraine, joining me now is nbc's jake great, he's in lviv, ukraine, jay, first lady dr. jill biden made a surprise mother's day to the southwestern part of ukraine, which has been under a cat for the last ten days. and she met with the ukrainian president, what is the reaction you're seeing from doctor biden's visit today? >> reverend sharpton, the first lady ukraine called the visit by dr. biden a courageous act noting that the area where they spent a little bit of time is an area that had suffered attacks over the last ten days on a regular basis. the first lady said that she had to be there on mother's day, said it was important that we show the world is in the united states's behalf and -- supports ukraine and also said the war as western i want to make sure she got that message across. the ground residents here in lviv say they are proud that the first lady made it there also very thankful a member of the city council here in lviv and she said that the american people have been a tremendous help in this effort. she also said that they along with the government will share with the victory that she believes will be coming soon overall, you can sense from people on the ground here in ukraine that they will really appreciative of the first lady dr. jill biden was on the ground, and ventured into ukraine, not to staying on the border, that was very important to them. -- a record amount of bedding in yesterday's kentucky derby, they had 200 and $74 million were wagered on derby day, which ended with the second biggest upset in the derby's 148 year history, the winner rich strike faced eight and one odds, them are just among all 20 horses. more politics nation with our now sharpton after the short break. w sharpton after the short break. break. ♪ ♪ ♪i'm so defensive,♪ ♪i got bongos thumping in my chest♪ ♪and something tells me they don't beat me♪ ♪ ♪ ♪he'd better not take the ring from me.♪ do your eyes bother you? influence someone's view o ab ortion while quite frankly, race has played a part in, historic lever black women, around issues around reproductive justice. we know that during times of slavery, black women were mutilated, abused, in the name of learning about the women's reproductive system. and so, race and reproduction justice are intricately linked because from the time we were brought here, as slaves, we were poked on, pulled on, and our rights to bodily autonomy either didn't exist, or barely existed. so, racing abortion are intricately linked and we're seeing that play out right to this day. >> monica, the senate will vote the vote next week to codify roe v. wade, though the chances of it passing are very slim. how does your organization plan to continue to help women if the supreme court does move to and legal abortion protections?
