then i hope that i bring strength and say that the people united states, that i have the hearts of everyone in the night states. i am carrying the united states with me to say that we are standing with you. >> stay tuned, we are going to have more from first lady doctor joe biden's trip to ukraine with our saturday night panel within the next hour. coming up on this hour of ayman, the democratic states fighting back. how blue governors are working to protect a woman's right to choose. them by an gets tough a maga world, the president delivers is hard to serve you yeah of trump and his followers. more from simone's interview with first lady joe biden, including her reaction to the supreme court's leaked opinion. let's get started. should we be surprised that this week a leaked opinion from the supreme court sent shockwaves across the country. it did not actually take place in a vacuum. let's be clear about this, for years now, republicans have been saying the quiet part out loud, namely anything they disagree with and bullying anyone that disagrees with them. all too often, the people warning us about what republicans were capable have been labeled as alarmists. but it is not alarmists if everything they are warning about actually turns out true. one of my colleagues here at msnbc, adam weinstein, laid it out like this. it's not like they're going to actually bend muslims. it's not like they're actually going to revoke violently. it's not like they'll actually banned books. it's not like they're actually going to overturn roe. so far, alarmists have been more right then quietest. come june, should this leaked opinion come true, there is a lot to be alarmed about. here is president biden. >> this is about a lot more than abortion. the idea that, somehow, there is an inherent right, that there is no right to privacy. which next part is going to be attacked? >> since that leaked decision, one republican senate candidate floated the idea banning the use of contraception. louisiana lawmakers advanced a bill that would classify abortion is homicide. that means a woman suffering a miscarriage could be charged with murder. yes, this is actually happening in america in 2022. i think it is time that we stop calling people alarmists and start eating their warnings. let's bring in our center night all-star panel. what anushay hossain is a host of about. gas mara gay is a msnbc political contributor. alencia johnson is a political strategist did this and former consultant for president biden. >> mara, i want to start you and the idea of alarmism. a lot of people saw this decision of years ago, why weren't there are concerns and warnings taken seriously by other people and people that could have prevented this from happening? >> i think you are asking the right question. my concern is that it is really important to take, especially the far-right, at their word. if they say that they want to do something, as they have been saying for 30 years, that they want to overturn roe, we should take that seriously and act, accordingly. i think, unfortunately, there has been a lot of investment in denial because we are so exhausted and wary from the past six years. you had, as trevor noah said i believe, excuse me, the president -- there was the played of president trump and then after that, the actual played of covid. people are exhausted. there is a sense among those for whom authority and institutions in america and have been protective, there are not the first to see what is really happening. i think it is really important that we listen to minority groups in united states, especially. not just racial minorities, we can start there, but listen to people in this country who have been sounding the alarm, whether it is about covid, or in this, case about abortion rights. we should listen to those that will actually be affected versus, should these things come to pass. instead of just passing them off as alarmists. there's a lot of frustration among those of us that feel gaslight at times. we have said that this is coming. it is happening, why are we pretending that it is not? it is time to stop the, and it is time to stand with the vulnerable, and stand up for women's and human rights. the time is now, midnight. >> anushay, mara brings up an interesting situation. on one hand, you have people currently warning us about where this goes from here, and at the same time, you have the track record of republicans and the result that they demonstrated since 1973 to overturn roe versus wade. now you have legal experts and activists worrying about if this puts other rights back on the chopping block, like gay marriage, interracial marriage, the use of contraceptive. do you see that as a possibility? should we be concerned about it right now? >> definitely, amen, without a doubt. what is really important for americans and your viewers to understand is that american women are at threat of losing roe and safe legal abortions. repercussions will be felt around the world. this will have serious implications for women's rights internationally as well. america's dirty little secret is that we have been exporting our domestic abortion politics for decades. excuse me, under a policy called the mexico city policy, also known as the global gag rule. this policy initially came up during the reagan administration is a hugely highly partisan policy. republicans will be reinstated on their first day of office. democratic precedence repealed it on the first day of office. it basically states that any overseas ngo that receives any u.s. financial or technical assistance cannot advocate, perform or even advise on abortion. this policy will not be legal in america because it would be deemed unconstitutional, but we have been implementing it overseas for decades. what happens in america, what happens to women's health and rights affects women all over the world. you can bet, iman, that they are coming after a settled law like roe, it is only the beginning. what is next? >> alencia, next week the senate will vote on a bill to codify abortion rights into federal law. that is set to fail because, two things, republicans would not support it, and in that way, filibuster will render it dead. some democrats like manchin and kristen simon, do not want to deal with filibuster to protect the lives of women, like did not do it to protect the lives of black people, to protect the lives of actual democracy that we live in. is there any value and his for other than symbolism of getting people on the record? >> that is the key value point to get all these people in a record. we are in a mid term lawyer. there people up for reelection. there are republicans being re-challenged. there are so many critical senate elections happening this midterm. it is very smart for the leader to say, i want all of you to get on the record so that we have something to go to midterms would. we are six months away from november. voter engagement and our intention span is probably not going to be as long as those of us here on the panel. we are trying to figure out ways in which we can maintain this momentum and have something to remind voters of come november. listen, i work that planned parenthood for over six years. i am so grateful that my fellow parent panelists talked about the fact we have literally been fighting this for so many years. it was not just the 2016 election where people start paying attention. there was definite gate longs of advocacy groups that say we need to make sure that there is federal protection. we got to fight back in our courts. not just the supreme court's, the lower courts to. right now, we are at a inflection point. the democrats will see this as a dividing issue for voters come november. >> anushay, since democrats hold a slim majority in congress, activists are looking to the white house to put forward executive action on this. these include getting the fda to lift restrictions on abortion pills, directing department of justice direct on states attempting to ban pregnant people from leaving the state for the procedure, and from improving contraception axis. is this enough, or is it just the best option that democrats have to try to use whatever powers they have in the white house? >> it is not enough. this is it. as my fellow panelists have said, you know why no one believed us and called us alarmists, a man, is because women have been raising the alarm. people do not believe us? they say we are hysterical, and that it is all in our heads, we are being overdramatic. it is not enough. they are coming at their safe, legal abortion rights in the richest democracy in the world. it begins with women's rights. it is so serious. if the president does not speak up now, if democrats don't speak up now, this is how we win the election coming up. we have to stand up for women, and we have to stand up for women's rights. it impacts all of us. >> let me ask you, alencia, about that boy. we have primaries playing up across the country as we speak, you have one in texas, which has now entered a national spotlight because the incumbent congressman, henry cuellar arts antiabortion position -- despite his views, he is being endorsed by speaker nancy pelosi, essentially, the establishment of the democratic party. doesn't that undermine the messaging coming out of the democrats right now? doesn't that conflict with the leadership's pro abortion views that they are trying to get short up? >> -- listen, the reality is that majority of americans did not want to see abortion rights go away in this country. i think as democrats, i will be honest, it is very frustrating when we allow for democrats in our party to say that they are going to vote for anti abortion legislation. they will vote for pro-choice legislation. you can have your own personal views, but democrats have to be very clear, much like the republican party is -- i don't get that much credit for anything, but i will say that republicans are very good at, you have to vote in line, no matter what your personal beliefs are. we could talk about how their beliefs are, but when it comes to democrats, you play this game of, oh, maybe you can be and antichoice democrat. that is absolutely against the party that activists like myself actually fought for in 2015 and 2016 to be very inclusive to advance access to abortion. i really need for this to shifted democratic leadership and say, you know what, this is what we stand for. if you are going to run as a democratic nominee, you have to as well, especially because as i mentioned, this is a overwhelmingly supported by americans. majority americans would not want to see roe v. wade overturned. that also means that people personally disagree with abortion, potentially independents and republicans who. >> it is absolutely mind-boggling why the democrats are behind the texas nominee on this issue. i will ask all of you to stick around with us, we will squeeze in a quick break. next, the states taking matters into their own hands to protect a woman's right to choose. first, corey confidence here are the headlines. a cory. >> hey, here is what we watch into starry. frank james, the alleged perpetrator on a brooklyn subway charge, has been indicted by a grand jury. the two counts include a federal terrorism charge, which could result in a massive sentence of life in prison. the 62-year-old is accused of setting off spoke bombs and firing 33 shots into a crowded chain. three americans tourists thing at sandals resort and bahamas were found dead on friday. police said there are no signs of trauma, and that foul play is not suspected. an investigation is ongoing. the latest big jeopardy winning streak has come to an end. a tutor from toronto won 23 consecutive games and earned over $560,000. her historic run places her in fifth in all-time wins in jeopardy history. more ayman after the break. jeopardy history jeopardy history more ♪ birds flyin' high, you know how i feel. ♪ ♪ breeze driftin' on by... ♪ if you've been playing down your copd,... ...it's time to make a stand. start a new day with trelegy. ♪...and i'm feelin' good. ♪ no once-daily copd medicine... has the power to treat copd in as many ways as trelegy. with three medicines in one inhaler, trelegy helps people breathe easier and improves lung function. it also helps prevent future flare-ups. trelegy won't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking it. do not take trelegy more than prescribed. trelegy may increase your risk of thrush, pneumonia, and osteoporosis. call your doctor if worsened breathing, chest pain, mouth or tongue swelling, problems urinating, vision changes, or eye pain occur. take a stand and start a new day with trelegy. ask your doctor about once-daily trelegy, and save at trelegy.com. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ introducing the all-new infiniti qx60. take on your wild world in style. ♪ i know there's conflicting information take on your wild world in style. about dupuytren's contracture. i thought i couldn't get treatment yet? >> thanks, amen. i actually spent the weeks reporting on just this. what i have learned is that there is already an abortion providers shortage in the united states. even in blue states or states where abortion is readily accessible, in theory, and in law, we have a situation in which for a variety of reasons, there are still not enough providers. the number one thing that needs to happen right now is that states need to move legislators that can. we are talking states like california, oregon, washington, new york, illinois, connecticut, vermont, rhode island, those states need to move quickly to direct resources of all kind to these abortion clinics and other providers, whether they are hospitals, clinics, what have you. if they can hire more staff. other laws that are under consideration that are very important in promising include allowing physician assistants and nurse midwives to administer abortions of certain kinds when appropriate and safe to do so. some states have moved on that front. providing funding for security and also streamlining access, which means making sure that people who need abortions can have the travel that they need to get their, so funds to travel. also, simply, in new york, i have had a lot of people that i spoke to this week who saw abortions in new york. they said it is very confusing because even in new york, where it is available and legal and supported, it is hard to know where to get one. can you get one at your ob/gyn office, do you have to go to a clinic, there is a lot of confusion. there is a lot that needs to be done. of course, legally, we need to protect providers and women from prosecution and other states. in other words, we have some states now, like new york, that has a law and bill that it is considering that would prohibit law enforcement agencies in the state of new york from cooperating with any investigation that's out of state. at the state of missouri, for example, wanted to prosecute a woman for second and abortion, because that is not illegal under new york law, new york law enforcement authorities would, if this bill were to pass and be enacted, would have no help and corporation for the state of new york. there is a lot of trial and error. more is better, it seems. >> anushay, i want to get your thoughts on this, would you make a blue states passing these laws, including some as, mara was talking, about included to combat legislation that would prosecute people that get abortions? will this be enough to protect women? >> no, a man. just us talking on this panel, aren't you confused, i am confused. mara, just hearing you speak, i am working in this field, if i am confused as an expert, imagine if the average woman on the ground is feeling. we cannot play politics with women's health and rights. amen, by the way, rich white women, middle class, upper class women, they will get their abortions. this will not be a problem. this impacts women of color, poor women of color, black and brown women. when you come after women's rights, it will have serious repercussions. this is something that -- no, it is not enough. we need to be very clear that women's rights, religious to justice is not negotiable. >> there is also the private sector at all this, alencia. you have major u.s. companies like citi group, yelp, apple, all announcing actions to protect their employees as access to in portions or versus, including the cost of procedure coverage and traveling expenses. your reaction, are you surprised we have not seen enough companies come out?
