he doesn't trust the international community, he blames ukrainians for -- the donbas region so he is now in his i think he knows what is going on now in ukraine. >> so chancellor -- says he believes vladimir putin thinks he is winning the war, that he is still living in the same alternate reality that led him to think that invading ukraine was actually a good idea so to put it in another way for you, putin's own humorous and isolation led him to badly misjudging ukraine and putin continues to misjudged the situation day after day, week after week. this week alone you had finland and sweden stand up to russian threats and signal that they are actually taking steps towards joining nato of course as the thing goes, when a rat is backed into a corner he lashes out, so we saw prominent -- arrested in moscow this week just one day after he spoke to msnbc about the importance of standing his ground. >> there are millions of people in russia -- i think it would be very demoralizing just leave the country russia is my country, russia is my home and -- >> and one of the biggest threats to putin's hold on power is of course -- he has been held in a penal colony outside of moscow and that is after surviving an attempt on his life with a soviet developed nerve agent back in 2020. -- was jailed on fraud charges that were trumped up by putin himself, just last month he was sentenced to an additional nine years in prison on new charges that were widely seen as politically motivated. earlier today i spoke with vladimir ashurkov, he is the -- anti-corruption foundation. >> vladimir ashurkov, thank you so much for joining us, i greatly appreciate your time. i would like to start with your big picture assessment of vladimir putin's mounting setbacks and diplomatic blunders. this week alone, you had the sweden and finish governments ignored his warnings and actually begin moving closer towards nato membership. you had the flagship of the russian navy in the black sea sunk, does vladimir putin realize that he has missed judged the situation in ukraine, do you think? >> well i think it is important to understand whether mr. putin is the same person at this point. angela merkel when she met him a few years ago, she said that this is a person not in touch with -- out of touch with this world. some people say that putin has mentally insane, and some are saying that he is fed information. but i think it is a fact that he is not in touch with reality. and the recent setbacks that you listed, of course they irritate him very much and we see why the urges that have been happening in the top echelons of russian power over the last weeks. >> i know that you are living in london, but your friend and colleague russian opposition leader alexei navalny has been jailed in russia since last year, late last month the russian court sentenced him to an additional nine years on a charge of embezzling donations from his supporters. first of all, i want to give you a chance to respond to those charges, and can you give us an update on mr. navalny how he is doing, why he is aware of in terms of what is happening in ukraine and russia at the moment? >> well, he was arrested in january 2021, the charges were that he was violating the terms of his suspended sentence, so he was not checking in every two weeks at the local police station because he was undergoing treatment in germany and -- the latest charges that got him a nine year prison term verdict a month ago, they were that he stole money from the foundation that you started and became the most prominent russian -- political non profit. so you can see that this allegation are politically motivated and he over the years became the most prominent -- critic. that is what he -- we keep in touch with him through a lawyer that visits him daily for about an hour and he hand rioters notes to our team, this family, and he reads whatever message and materials was sent to him. >> you have said that it is unlikely alexei navalny will ever be released as long as vladimir putin remains in power, you are talking about how much of a threat he has become to vladimir putin, do you feel that he is still a threat to vladimir putin from prison? why does vladimir putin fear him so much? >> well, i think in hindsight now, we understand that putin made a decision to make a full scale invasion of ukraine sometime ago. i think poisoning of navalny in august of 2020 was preparation for that, because navalny has millions of supporters in russia, he has emerged as the most prominent opposition politician, he has a capable and well functioning organization so it is nash -- natural that putin would like to keep him behind bars. >> is it possible to even have an opposition, a credible opposition in russia today? is there any semblance of a credible opposition in russia today? >> position in terms of a political party or political movements, no. i don't think that is possible. the last independent media outlets have been -- for going to the streets and posters that say no war but all the letters are -- war and peace and people get penalties for that. so it is not possible to have a formal opposition now. but they descend the disillusion of russian people with what is going on in russia is going, and it will result in a political crisis and wave of -- mass protests sooner or later. >> you said last year before russia invaded ukraine that sanctions against russia were not working because the west was not targeting the people with the money, saying, quote, it is not enough to sanction the operatives who just follow orders. we are obviously in a very different situation now, but we believe that the sanctions the west have imposed are a, targeting the right people, and be, enough. >> we have been advocating for sanctions against corruption and human rights abuse for years and we -- words are falling on deaf ears over the last month and a half we have seen an avalanche of sanctions, hundreds of people have been sanctioned in the u.s., uk, and eu. again, eu cannot really answer the question of whether it is enough. sanctions is an instrument, it is not a silver bullet that if you apply it correctly, if you have some idea list of people to sanction, then the war will stop and putin will resign. sanctions do create a motivation for people who know how the system work, who have been beneficial's of this regime to do something to change this regime, to change the totalitarian structure and bring an end to this atrocious war. so it is not a short term solution -- it is one of the instruments that can be employed. >> yeah, and i want to ask you just about you personally, do you all worry that you as well could be targeted by putin's regime, even though you are in london. we have seen the russian government go after other russian figures abroad, do you have concerns about your own safety and well-being? here to help us answer that question is my all-star sunday panel, at least journalist, and contributor -- also msnbc political analyst and republican strategist, former national deputy for president obama, it's great to have all three of you with us. elaine, i'll start with you. give me a sense of how a more representative primary calendar actually change democratic presidential politics. >> well, it is really important because the primary season gets us there opportunity for the electorate to get to know all the candidates. to test the messaging, to test the policy and the platforms. it is an opportunity [inaudible] for the rest of the nation who is going to be the primary selection grip. so, you want to have a candidates have an opportunity to meet with and get to now communities that mri flecked of of the democratic party. i love a proponent of south carolina being early in the early primary states. when i cut my teeth there on the presidential campaign for president obama, over 60% of electors are african americans. again, more reflective of the diversity of the -- [inaudible] an incredible opportunity. arizona, as well. with the growing electorate that is latino in the democratic party. in fact, electorate latinos are going all across the country. want to make sure that the primary voters have an opportunity to make the candidates [inaudible] like them across the country. where we stand as a group. >> yeah. elise, the 2020 race, the primary calendar. this actually creates a narrative for these candidates that often influences the electorate and what comes after each vote. i think immediately of what happened in south carolina, how that changed for joe biden. would've sealed carolina had actually been first? would there ever have been a doubt about joe biden clinching the nomination? will there be better narratives if another state goes first for people like bernie sanders or pete better judge? obviously, looking back in 2020 ... >> well, exactly. how different with the democratic primary have been itself carolina had had that early position? tonight i was talking to dnc and cider that said it is near certainty that one of the first states will represent the diversity of the democratic electorate. this insider pointed to georgia as a possible new option for the early slate. also, south carolina is always going to be in their, especially out of pastor how decisive it wasn't last round. no one can remember the absolute boondoggle of what happened to the iowa caucuses last go round. wow, let's just repeat that all over again. that makes a lot of sense. i'm really glad that the dnc rules committee is looking at this. >> yeah. let me switch gears for a minute and talk about the midterms. this weekend, mitch mcconnell saying that he has high hopes for his party's prospects but fears unacceptable candidates coming out of gop primaries. is that a real cause for concern that this round of senate candidates could end up like the tide atkins and christine o'donnell's of a decade ago? i'm thinking immediately of what is taking place in ohio, some of the candidates in ohio -- just a list of characters that is hard for me to imagine that the gop wants to associate within its party. >> yeah. herschel walker in georgia. >> absolutely. >> i think why it's mcconnell was also trying to channel their is saying, if you get the most trumpist candidate out of the primary, you're probably going to lose because he remembers what happened in georgia very well. donald trump's influence. if not for donald trump, he probably would have been the majority leader in 2020. so, he knows how important it is to choose candidates wisely. the republicans are, in fact, the only people who can get in the way of republicans actually winning back the senate. i think the house is pretty much set, but there are some doozies out there in some of these congressional seats. i've long said, the best chance that democrats have is to hope that republicans put up the most wacky, wackadoo told trump's candidates that they can. >> jay-z is definitely one way of describing them. i think there are a few other words, probably not suitable for television, even though it is late night. atlanta, can democratic candidates take advantage of the crazies that might come out of republican primaries when kitchen table issues are dominating the talks? what do democrats need to do to exploit the candidates that are on the other side of crazy? >> first and foremost, they're already showing their crazies. doing a good job of mentioning herschel walker. he has wrapped himself up in lies. his own finances. he's [inaudible] you can tell that on the updates, he is the gop from running for georgia, he has only been something like $5 million in the first three months of 2022. that is compared to raphael warnock, democratic front runner, who has $13 million in the first three months. money talks. we know that he is already [inaudible] a general matter, blatant matter, across the board. as the crazies come out, i know that's not the crazy [inaudible] as a crazy's come out with their culture war [inaudible] the point of pushback, there's no point letting the players come out and say, no. i don't step. that i don't stand for defunding the police. just letting the republican say that democrats stand for defunding the police. or another red herring. separate mrsa when they do stem for. to go ahead and go ahead and go ahead. to choose our devices. they're dividing the country. the republicans are letting the arguments hang out there. we can't do that. it will divide our state. >> elise, i want to ask you about the ohio senate race for a moment. this weekend, donald trump endorsed j.d. vance in that senate primary. not only did vance once compare trumpism to opioid addiction, but josh mandel, one of vance's opponents, basically did everything to court trump's affection. i mean, he was trying to appeal to trump in every sense of the word. he was repeating qanon conspiracy theories, spreading this stuff with this conspiracy theories. how embarrassing is it for menzel, for a guy who kissed up to trump so much, not getting trump's endorsement here? >> he is josh mandel. he does a lot of stuff. on a daily basis that are really embarrassing. it's hilarious to me that vance is now, you know, going for this man of the people, mr. ohio. you know, scoring the leads. it's really hilarious. the bottom line is, he has a lot of money. donald trump also has a lot of money to donate to him if he chooses to run in 2024. at the end of the day, that is what got him the coveted trump endorsement and these primaries in pennsylvania, first and then for ohio and pennsylvania in early may, are really the test in these early tight gop races. are they going to matter? >> is disgraceful. it is an embarrassment. i do wonder if he is guilty of that, and then you add the pending referral to doj about refusing to appear before congress, and ignoring the subpoena. that is another criminal charge. it seems like mark meadows is just kind of racking them up right now. but most of all, it shows that there is no way that mark meadows or the donald trump administration felt the rules apply to them. and that is the clear intent here. >> -- to florida men in the villages, i believe one who voted for trump or who is a trump supporter, he actually pleaded guilty this week to voting twice in the 2020 election. and again, it is absolute crickets from the republicans who are always accusing democrats of voter fraud. but i'm not seeing any republicans come out and denouncing this example of voter fraud that is reportedly in favor of donald trump. >> that is right, because the republicans have been -- support at the federal and state legislative levels in support of legislation and litigation claiming that voter fraud exists, and largely exist on the democratic side, right? so -- recently came out with these stark report that explains the connection between these claims of voter fraud that did not exist on -- largely on the democratic side, right? saying whatever did not exist, but we saw a whole rat of litigation coming out of the election in 2020 based on those failed voter fraud claims. and then, all of those litigations, all of that litigation, and all of the claims were qualified into linda geisha which is why we are seeing voter suppression across the country. so we have mark meadows and his potential voter fraud, we have two gentlemen down in florida with their individual voter fraud, but -- rampant issue and yet it is the basis by which all these legislatures are -- policy and making it difficult for the average voter to cast a ballot, particularly voters of color. >> at least the brennan center found that the false fraud claims that the trump campaign made in 2020 especially during the lawsuits, they didn't die with a litigation, but rather became the foundations that propelled new sly legislation in 2021 to -- elections without any evidence. so regardless of what their intention was, they have succeeded in restricting voting capabilities if you will because of the state legislations that were passed. what is your reaction to that significant development? >> the bottom line is, republicans want to not make it easier for people who are going to vote against their interests. so, that is where you are seeing all this activism on the gop side, if you talk to -- what i categorized as a soft trump supporter, someone who's probably more loyal to the gop than donald trump himself about what happened in 2020, do you think the election was stolen? you might not hear the qanon, that kind of crazy theory, it was just too easy for people to vote because of the pandemic, and that is why joe biden won. so this is what across the country you see republicans swept into action, and they are making all these changes that are probably going to make it a lot harder for democrats to get out the vote they need to get out. >> alina, florida republicans actually advocated the responsibility to draw the states -- run desantis who wants to carve up majority black districts even more. what do you make of that? what is your reaction? >> well, certainly, as you mentioned the responsibility to draw those lines for redistricting lies squarely with the state legislature. this is one more step in rhonda censuses authoritarian regime over florida. so this is just one more thing his doing to secure his vote power, and his party. i think it is also important to note that the reason why he is able to make these changes without federal intervention is because in 2013 this supreme court struck down provisions of the voting rights act that would require the submission of this redistricting or the redistricting plan today department of justice. now we are in a -- desantis is saying he is going to demonstrate to majority african american districts in florida and we are going to see, i assume there will be litigation immediately following this, because there is no way he can do this without diluting the african american vote, ensuring that african americans do not have opportunity to elect the candidate of their choice. but that is his plan, his core, at his core his plan is to dilute the african american vote in favor of greater republican strength in his state. i am certain there will be legal challenges to follow. >> yeah, i was going to say, in 2018 he only won 14% of the black vote. it now appears to be the case if he can't get their vote, he definitely wants to try and dilute it. let's go to ohio for a second, because the supreme court in ohio there invalidated a fourth legislative redistricting plan saying the commission failed to comply with the states new anti gerrymandering rules. again, is this a case of republicans doing everything they can to get an and vantage at the polls here? why are they not simply realizing that after the fourth time of being shut down by a, you know, supreme court, that they would learn their lesson and put up a fair legislative map. >> honestly, i try to look at the district in the ohio maps and understand, and it is just beyond me. any coherent explanation for what they are trying to do. of course they will keep going out, it because republicans are playing for keeps. they want to win, and they will be ruthless about it. democrats need to think about how they can match that level of ruthlessness on their side, they are going to pull out their voters and keep votes from not being suppressed in the entire country, right? when you look at all of the actions that are happening in so many districts and so many states and counties around the country, this is a full on fight. >> susan, when you look at the way the maps have been gerrymandered in different areas, whether be florida or ohio, there was some initial assessment that perhaps it wasn't going to look as bad for democrats who also had some states where they also engaged in some map redrawing's of their own in their favor, where do you think ultimately the issue of gerrymandering will be when the mid terms are done? and i said i don't know what to do actually. and i asked one guy who is at the border if he saw a little girl crossing the border, can you send me a photo, and get her mom's information. and he did, and i got that photo. and i decided to print it 150 feet long, and roll it into a -- material and went there with my team and we arrived at the border in poland and in the forest behind the border we started -- the ropes and rolled the, we crossed the border walking and i got a contact with some people there just people who were following me on instagram and they put their cars, and that is we drove all the way to the largest city in the western side of ukraine. >> you touched on this story, she is obviously the subject of this piece, she has actually become a symbol of ukrainian resilience throughout this war. tell me a bit about why you chose her to use in your art? what was the reaction from the family when you approached them for permission to use her in this art? >> well, you know, first of all what is incredible is that photo -- this photo i took at the border is ukrainian french filmmaker and just very quickly and simply the whole world, ukraine when they have a moment she was just playing so it's not like there was any photo shoot organized, or anything like that. so when he went to tell the mom, she was like sure how do you want to use it, and wait, let me put you in touch with jr and his team. so we got in touch with her, and we really -- want to bring this photo into a gigantic size. and so time magazine called her and interviewed her and she realized what's this image had become, and its full knowledge of that that she said yes please, i would love her to represent all the kids who are traveling in this conflict, and so her father and brother are still in ukraine and they have to stay as. >>ve to stay as >> people take away from this image in this particular piece of art that you did? >> well, i did it in the middle of ukraine and then i left ukraine. i came back the following week. i spoke with the people there. the people i met. there i said, how can i help more? how can i do more? they said, well, one thing that really helps us is that you keep us alive in your media. so, keep creating projects around you. i thought, wait. i still have the big tarp with me. let's open it in big cities around the world. we started doing it in europe for the last couple of days and weeks. it's going to be presented ads [inaudible] and probably lots of other cities. >> absolutely incredible. i have to ask you though are you working on anything else in ukraine at the moment? >> yes. so, when i went there ... the first time when i came back, i know that that there was a big need for any kind of help, you know? any food, any stuff that people need that they can't access anymore in the country. i told everyone on social media, i'm going to make an nft, a digital image of that. i'm going to salute people. 100 percent of the proceeds will go directly to the ground. every single week from paris, we organize trucks filled with goods and food that are traveling straight to ukraine. we have already sent three trucks in last three weeks. we keep going every single week. plus, direct to help with some groups that we have localized in bases there and at the border. it's the polish border. >> jr, noting your documentary, when it premiered here on this, paper and glue, i have to ask you really quickly ... how has that documentary been received since it first premiered?
