>> hello, and welcome to dateline. she was a charismatic and talented young mother. when she died violently, her family hope for quick justice. but, as years went by, with no one arrested or charged, that hope faded. would didn't fade, small traces of dna evidence, more than two decades after the crime. could that evidence solve this case,? here's keith morrison with haunting images. >> coin underwood, we always belong. he probably shouldn't retire in the first place. born detective like, boyd. now buzz cut since suits were a generation younger with high tech gear, and fancy -- who else had the experience to make sense of what was in here? this room of lost causes, so many cases gone cold. justice denied. like, this one, the one about her. god knows, back when they gave it to him, it didn't look so hot. >> it was like, we sure were gonna get involved in this. in hindsight, this thing i should've done. >> but then boyd open that file. what a story he found? they're a beautiful woman, the curious lies, and those strange books, with long ago private thoughts. but, was he obsessed? should he have let it consume more than a decade of retirement, and follow him into retirement? the woman he found in, here was catherine. kit, as people called. or certainly, to an idolizing little sister named anna, she was something. >> everywhere she went, she was as bright smile, that brought light into a room and people gravitated towards her. >> donna and kit shared just about everything. >> she was shining, which is gorgeous. she was just kit, and there is gawky little donna, and i'd say let's go have fun. >> and then, the fairytale that began in the happiest place on earth, isn't that what they call? it it was 1974, kid landed a job at it's a small world attraction, at disneyland. it's where she met, who else, prince charming. >> it seem like a fairytale. she was very happy. we were happy for both of them. >> his name was gregory moore dick. he was a foreman on, it's a small world. he was gentle and easy. he loved to cook, with this is not so unusual, but he also loves sowing, and she like that. he had a college degree, and service in vietnam. so, the wedding, in 1977, was magic. kit was happy, and before long, pregnant. first, with elise, then breonna, and then career. kit had studied home economics, so lost her dream to become a food stylist, which meant she was -- in the ads. >> it's something that i don't have an eye for, because all those corn girls look the same to me. when your food stylist, it's your job to fund the best. >> wish you good? it >> very. >> her sister, donna, still has food photographs kit designed. these were published back in the early 80s, by the l.a. times home aga's in. and, that's when the strange story really began. maybe it was the fact that she had been married for four years. was she bored, or maybe it was a close quarters, long hours, with the photographer for, the food she prepared. there was an affair. kit was in love. she was catholic, and consumed with guilt, and confessed at all, to her husband. >> she went to him and said, i've been with another man? >> yes. >> the very night? happened >> that's what she told. me >> gregory seemed prepared to forgive. they both still swore they care deeply for each other. but, marriage is tough enough for too, there wasn't enough room for three. it was over. >> christmas of 1982, kid's big brother, joe o'connell, saw how it was with the new guy. >> it was obvious that they were very happy together. very happy. >> his name was henry. at his own photography studio, and donna dropped by one morning, when kit was there. >> she was happy. she was in love. to someone that treated a really good, and was in love with her. they made a great family. >> kit was bursting with plans, and now she was moving to los angeles from orange county, to be closer to her fooling work. and then, that weekend, it was january 1983. decades later would happen that weekend, the mystery of it was in a file on boyd underwood's desk. and a family was thinking back, trying to piece together those incomprehensible events. starting with that first call. >> it was slowly before ten, saturday morning. >> did she pickup? >> no. i don't think anything of it. she was gone for the day, i missed. or >> she was supposed to come on saturday night, and we did hear from her. she didn't come, and you can call. >> older brother, joe, remembers how he figured she was just busy with her move. from anaheim up to l.a., no cause for alarm. it wasn't until sunday night that they decided to check on her. so, jose ed he and kate's boyfriend, henry, drove down to anaheim to kids house. >> no lights on in the house. so, we start to walk away, thinking everything is fine. then, as we turn to leave and walk off the porch, henry looked into the garage. and we saw a car. and that's what's panicked henry. >> it was a blur from that point on. everything frantically, joe wrapped jacket around his arm, he remembered, getting ready to punch his fist through the window of the porch. he saw henry run around back, and within moments heard and screamed. henry had managed to get into the house through an unlocked patio door. he opened the front door, joe stepped inside. into a nightmare. >> i saw her lying there, there was blood everywhere. she was dead, she was murdered. >> coming up, kids brother and boyfriend get grilled by police. >> was he questioned closely? >> her head was almost gone. >> the case was old, cold when they found. it but, before long, detective boyd underwood was sucked right into the puzzling mystery of what happened to the beautiful, young food stylist, back in 1983. >> kid's brother told boyd about finding her body. but having to tell their parents >> one of the hardest things i've ever had to do. i can still hear them crying. >> joe remembered how having not heard from kit that week,. the -- check on her. they found her in the dining room, lying in a pool of her own blood. her throat admin slashed, she was nude from the waist down. henry seemed to be. iraqi are both crying. both of us are out of control. maybe kid's killer was out of control to. the place was a mess. the tv haphazardly placed in the front, or the speakers run from the walls, potted plant fallen on the floor. the chaotic scene, her skirt and underwear pulled down, like somebody had raped or, killed or, started to burglarize the house and then left before he was done. but, to the police, it looked phony. like things had been staged. no sign of four century, just the rear sliding door slightly ajar. the same entry that henry slipped through to funder body. back then, at the end of the weekend, in january 83, police set out right away to interview people and get circle, including henry. >> was he questioned closely? >> yes, we both are. >> of course, detectives also called gregory, kids estranged husband. >> i got a call, kitty was dead. >> more than a quarter century later, the memory still haunts him. >> i remember sitting at the table, shaking, i was just upset. >> in a flash, his whole world flipped upside down, after that call. as kids estranged husband, he too was treated as a person of interest, of course. and, just like they did henry, police interviewed gregory. >> and you didn't kill catherine? >> no. that woman is too beautiful. >> it just seemed, kit that weekend, -- when he went to go fetch their daughters. the moment that lives on his memory, very clearly, he told them. >> we got to their house about 10:00, to pick them up for what they already. >> he and kit chatted briefly, and while the girls finish getting ready, greg remember going back and forth in the, health loading up his vw -- for present for the brother. party along with a girl's car seats, an overnight bags. >> we got at the car, rearranging's little, bit put them in them, make sure the gate was closed, drove off, i want to a party. by >> the time gregory at his chat with the detectives, the autopsy report and delimited him as a viable suspect. said, kit was killed during pm hours, on saturday. gregory had already taken the girls to a birthday party by then. so, if not gregory, then who? police wanted to know if gregory had seen anything unusual that day, could somebody have been lurking, waiting for him to drive off? was anybody else there at the time? >> no. >> okay, you went back out to your car in front? he had himself one possible answer. his dream, was to launch a business in food photography. he as an aspiring photographer, would shoot it. >> why wasn't? it >> well, she decided to go out before i was ready. that's when she met henry and started doing food photography for him and said. >> i guess, henry, that other photographer. >> so, she did exactly what you wanted to do. just with a different guy. >> yeah. >> and then youtube work together? >> yeah. but it never happened. >> it never happened because, you already know. the affair with henry, kits confession. gregory wrote about it in his diary. this is from august 31st, 1981. kit had an affair with henry. the act has not diminish my love or devotion to her quite one bit. i find myself susceptible to this whole situation. now let's get on with our love in life and anyone who will enjoy us. as long as the joy does not hurt we have. >> you're accepting the idea that there will be two men in the situation? >> it was not accepting, it was going, all right this happened. she's a wonderful person, i can see why other people would be attracted to her. but, then we moved on, but separately. >> separately because of henry. but also because of that diary. her sister, donna, knew he kept one. she recalls asking kit about it. >> and i remember four years -- she said oh no that's his. his private book. >> but there was, and temptation one. gregory was out of town. can't read those private pages. and discovered, the man she was married to, had lied to her. whopping lies. about graduating from college. about serving in vietnam. any thought of saving the marriage was done. and cotton's lies, gregory took refuge in his diary. this is what he wrote on september 8th, 1992. all of my deceptions have come to light. no service in vietnam. did not graduate from college. and a few more to have an escape route from the relationship. >> yeah, it goes back to this guy who wanted to -- he didn't fit in. he doesn't learn very well. was not invited to parties. so, i decided to embarrass my life a little bit. and also, people like me. >> but there was more. as kid read her husband's diary, she discovered a list of women's names. where these women's that he had slept with? gregory denied it. he said these were the names of women he admired. he had never slept with any of them. >> but everything she had known about him was a lie. >> months later she filed for divorce. so when she was murdered just six days before the foreign -- divorce was finalized. it wasn't long before the family pointed a finger at gregory. but the police did not have enough evidence to arrest him. >> -- >> and here i leave the house go straight to a party. it's not like i disappeared for hours. >> you say you had no blood, people would've seen it. >> no blood no cuts. >> these are pictures from the birthday party. the man at the edge of the picture in the red hat, is gregory. most of the party said gregory was one of the first guests to arrives and one of his helpful self. >> well the separation took its toll, and gregory finally moved. he left southern california for spoken, washington. and that desiccation petered out. the case went cold. after years, it'll relinquished hope that they would never be justice for kit. which, of course, is where boyd underwood entered the story. going through that old file, those forgotten -- if he had just gotten deeper, wet secrets would be fined? here again is keith morrison, with haunting images. >> gregory moore dick wanted to first start. he was not the single father of two small daughters. bringing them up, amongst suspicion laws, where the mother was murder, was increasingly unappealing. so, gregory set up house in eastern washington. in the middle class home unspoken. he went about organizing a normal life. he was, generally, agreed an excellent father to see little girls. >> they had security, they had a parent who was very involved. >> for himself, gregory went back to his first love, taking pictures. he set up a studio in downtown spoken. photography by gregory, and kids dreadful death, 1000 miles away, faded in history. except for a family, his family, convinced right or wrong, that her killer was in fact gregory. they had after all witnessed a shouting and shoving matches that would proceed the breakup, then the murder. >> by 1985, pretty much, we knew that he had gotten away with it. >> did you ever give up on the idea that, some day, there would be justice? >> inside. closet >> though, of course, that was also gregory's closet for more than four years. he'd only been out of the place a couple of months. boyd decided to have all the evidence retested, and, now gregory's dna turned up in several places. a tiny spot on the plaza doorknob, on a rear sliding glass door, and in a powder room sink. the amount was miniscule. so, perhaps, it meant nothing. gregory could've left it there when he lived in the house, except >> the bathroom sink had her blood and his blood mix. the sliding door was a mixture of her blood in his blood. you start getting more convinced that he was part of that crime scene. >> then, boyd, listen to the police interviews from 1980. three something jumped out. on the day gregory socket and picked up his girls, he, said he put them in their car seats, and gone back toward the house to close the front gate. when he returned to the car, he told detectives, his elder daughter asked him a question. >> what took you so long daddy? >> i said to close ugly. did you have a fight with mommy? >> i'm thinking, why would you want to put that in there. >> remember, gregory had said he never went back into the house. after strapping the girls into the car, but if his daughter complained that his father was gone too long, maybe he did go in there. and took the time to kill kit. all in all, boy decided there was enough evidence into thousand one to warrant a little visit to gregory, up unspoken. >> and he was, as he was, perfectly cooperative. he even let them search of the house. so, boyden colleagues offered gregory a chance to confess. >> tell us what happened. what happened was you went back to the house? >> but, boy did in charge him. he couldn't, because the prosecutor told him he just didn't have enough to make a case. the interview proved -- gregory had never thrown away, but it wasn't enough. >> did you think about giving up on? it >> no. >> there was something there. >> i have always thought so. >> and then, summer 2007, boyd was -- felt like he had a case, but how could he sell it to the da's office. boyd's been around for a long time, more than dna sciences changed. >> i was working with propeller heads. a step or two ahead of me. he suggested why don't you do a powerpoint. >> i said, what is a powerpoint? >> he learned fast. finally, the evidence assembled in that power point presentation, bits of gregory's blood in the house, his in kits dna mixed on that we are slider in the bathroom sink, and gregory's diaries persuaded the da. still, to solidify their case, might be why is that the da decided, for boyd to pay gregory one more visit. see if he could turn up some fresh evidence. perhaps, with luck, to puncture gregory's consistent denial, that he had gone back to the house, after putting the girls in the car. so, in 2008, 25 years after the murder, boyd took one last shot. two colleagues conducted the interview, and used an old if, on lovely, tactic. perfectly legal. they told gregory ally. it was a ruse. the detective told gregory that his dna had been found on the waistband of kits tights. he pushed gregory to explain, how could've got in there? remember, it wasn't true. but, listen to what gregory says. >> what happened that day? what happened when you went in the second time? why do you go back? and >> i took the kids out of the car, and forgot to put the president. >> what happened when you got back in the house? because that's >> i picked up the presence and left. >> you heard it, gregory changed his story. just enough to put himself in the murder scene, alone with kit. with that, a quarter century after the murder of his estranged wife, gregory monique was arrested and charged, with first of the murder. boyd called kid's brother, joe. >> i think he said, we've arrested him, and i didn't know it for, honestly. remember, i have given up. why did you arrest him? >> no. >> did you notice any blood on him? >> oh my goodness, no. >> was there anything unusual about him at the party? >> no, not at all. >> but if not gregory, then who was the killer? cool well, wait for it. through this testimony, the defense made a startling -- >> did she tell you that things were not working out? >> you had been away for months. >> two months. two months ago. >> but,. -- >> did? she >> kitty was a terrible house cleaner. even the police said they've never seen such a filthy house. >> the defense that turned out, had been busy. they had retested the blood evidence on that we are sliding door, the one that showed a mixture of kits blood and gregory's dna. the result was quite a stunning. gregory and his daughter shared an identical blood protein. >> we were very excited because -- as it ends up, both daughters had that. >> so it was impossible, attorney said, to be absolutely certain it was only a mixture of gregory's dna and gets blood on that slider. it could've been a mixture of the entire family piled on over the years. and then, after weeks of testimony, another jury left the courtroom. the waiting began, again. >> based on the results of the first trial, i don't have the same sense of confidence the second time. >> gregory, however, was confident, as thanksgivings weekend approached. >> everybody was going, hey, we'll see you over the weekend. >> after two days, the jury rang the bell if. a verdict. >> we the jury in the above entitled action find the defendant, gregory moore dick, guilty of murder in the first degree. >> gregory, before the shock, said in thought he simply heard it wrong. >> i just couldn't believe that i did not hear not. i kept looking at the court going, there's a word missing. >> one prosecutor's door down wagner finally wear those words -- >> it's a rush. it's a relief. you think about the people behind you, what they've been through. what this will mean to them. justice for the victim. >> at the sentence hearing, kids family pronounce the words that stored up nearly 20 years. >> there is a hole in our lives. a hole left by this murder. >> i wish her children had an idea of what they've missed out on. >> oh, but they do, said gregory, and reply. they all do. >> -- and that's not true. -- >> daughters who, throughout it, all have been staunch, defenders of their father. in court, the elder of the two spoke for both parents. >> my family and i -- to another 25 years of pain and agony. i miss my mother very much, but that's not fair that my father's been taken away. >> for a long time. the sentence, 25 years to life. while he sat in jail, waiting to be transferred to a new prison line, i asked him about his daughters. gregory said -- >> i miss them. i've got their love. >> kids family, would they have? >> i think she's in my soul, even though she's not here. she's with us. >> and finally, one determined detective, officially retired, again. this case, for him, was, well, >> very emotional. >> was it worth all the time? >> hello, and welcome to dateline. she was a charismatic and talented young mother. when she died violently, her family hope for quick justice. but, as years went by, with no one arrested or charged, that hope faded. would didn't fade, small traces of dna evidence, more than two decades after the crime. could that evidence solve this case,? this room of lost causes, so many cases gone cold. justice denied. like, this one, the one about her. god knows, back when they gave it to him, it didn't look so hot. >> it was like, we sure were gonna get involved in this. in hindsight, this thing i should've done. >> but then boyd open that file. what a story he found? they're a beautiful woman, the curious lies, and those strange books, with long ago private thoughts. but, was he obsessed? should he have let it consume more than a decade of retirement, and follow him into retirement? the woman he found in, here was catherine. kit, as people called. or certainly, to an idolizing little sister named anna, she was something. >> everywhere she went, she was as bright smile, that brought light into a room and people gravitated towards her. >> donna and kit shared just about everything. >> she was shining, which is gorgeous. she was just kit, and there is gawky little donna, and i'd say let's go have fun. >> and then, the fairytale that began in the happiest place on earth, isn't that what they call? it it was 1974, kid landed a job at it's a small world attraction, at disneyland. it's where she met, who else, prince charming. >> it seem like a fairytale. she was very happy. we were happy for both of them. >> his name was gregory moore dick. he was a foreman on, it's a small world. he was gentle and easy. he loved to cook, with this is not so unusual, but he also loves sowing, and she like that. he had a college degree, and service in vietnam. so, the wedding, in 1977, was magic. kit was happy, and before long, pregnant. first, with elise, then breonna, and then career. kit had studied home economics, so lost her dream to become a food stylist, which meant she was -- in the ads. >> it's something that i don't have an eye for, because all those corn girls look the same to me. when your food stylist, it's your job to fund the best. >> wish you good? it >> very. >> her sister, donna, still has food photographs kit designed. these were published back in the early 80s, by the l.a. times home aga's in. and, that's when the strange story really began. maybe it was the fact that she had been married for four years. was she bored, or maybe it was a close quarters, long hours, with the photographer for, the food she prepared. there was an affair. kit was in love. she was catholic, and consumed with guilt, and confessed at all, to her husband. >> she went to him and said, i've been with another man? >> yes. >> the very night? happened >> that's what she told. me >> gregory seemed prepared to forgive. they both still swore they care deeply for each other. but, marriage is tough enough for too, there wasn't enough room for three. it was over. >> christmas of 1982, kid's big brother, joe o'connell, saw how it was with the new guy. >> it was obvious that they were very happy together. very happy. >> his name was henry. at his own photography studio, and donna dropped by one morning, when kit was there. >> she was happy. she was in love. to someone that treated a really good, and was in love with her. they made a great family. >> kit was bursting with plans, and now she was moving to los angeles from orange county, to be closer to her fooling work. and then, that weekend, it was january 1983. decades later would happen that weekend, the mystery of it was in a file on boyd underwood's desk. and a family was thinking back, trying to piece together those incomprehensible events. starting with that first call. >> it was slowly before ten, saturday morning. >> did she pickup? >> no. i don't think anything of it. she was gone for the day, i missed. or >> she was supposed to come on saturday night, and we did hear from her. she didn't come, and you can call. >> older brother, joe, remembers how he figured she was just busy with her move. from anaheim up to l.a., no cause for alarm. it wasn't until sunday night that they decided to check on her. so, jose ed he and kate's boyfriend, henry, drove down to anaheim to kids house. >> no lights on in the house. so, we start to walk away, thinking everything is fine. then, as we turn to leave and walk off the porch, henry looked into the garage. and we saw a car. and that's what's panicked henry. >> it was a blur from that point on. everything frantically, joe wrapped jacket around his arm, he remembered, getting ready to punch his fist through the window of the porch. he saw henry run around back, and within moments heard and screamed. henry had managed to get into the house through an unlocked patio door. he opened the front door, joe stepped inside. into a nightmare. >> i saw her lying there, there was blood everywhere. she was dead, she was murdered. >> coming up, kids brother and boyfriend get grilled by police. >> was he questioned closely? >> her head was almost gone. >> the case was old, cold when they found. it but, before long, detective boyd underwood was sucked right into the puzzling mystery of what happened to the beautiful, young food stylist, back in 1983. >> kid's brother told boyd about finding her body. but having to tell their parents >> one of the hardest things i've ever had to do. i can still hear them crying. >> joe remembered how having not heard from kit that week,. the -- check on her. they found her in the dining room, lying in a pool of her own blood. her throat admin slashed, she was nude from the waist down. henry seemed to be. iraqi are both crying. both of us are out of control. maybe kid's killer was out of control to. the place was a mess. the tv haphazardly placed in the front, or the speakers run from the walls, potted plant fallen on the floor. the chaotic scene, her skirt and underwear pulled down, like somebody had raped or, killed or, started to burglarize the house and then left before he was done. but, to the police, it looked phony. like things had been staged. no sign of four century, just the rear sliding door slightly ajar. the same entry that henry slipped through to funder body. back then, at the end of the weekend, in january 83, police set out right away to interview people and get circle, including henry. >> was he questioned closely? >> yes, we both are. >> of course, detectives also called gregory, kids estranged husband. >> i got a call, kitty was dead. >> more than a quarter century later, the memory still haunts him. >> i remember sitting at the table, shaking, i was just upset. >> in a flash, his whole world flipped upside down, after that call. as kids estranged husband, he too was treated as a person of interest, of course. and, just like they did henry, police interviewed gregory. >> and you didn't kill catherine? >> no. that woman is too beautiful. >> it just seemed, kit that weekend, -- when he went to go fetch their daughters. the moment that lives on his memory, very clearly, he told them. >> we got to their house about 10:00, to pick them up for what they already. >> he and kit chatted briefly, and while the girls finish getting ready, greg remember going back and forth in the, health loading up his vw -- for present for the brother. party along with a girl's car seats, an overnight bags. >> we got at the car, rearranging's little, bit put them in them, make sure the gate was closed, drove off, i want to a party. by >> the time gregory at his chat with the detectives, the autopsy report and delimited him as a viable suspect. said, kit was killed during pm hours, on saturday. gregory had already taken the girls to a birthday party by then. so, if not gregory, then who? police wanted to know if gregory had seen anything unusual that day, could somebody have been lurking, waiting for him to drive off? was anybody else there at the time? >> no. >> okay, you went back out to your car in front? >> put the kids in, but the presence and. >> and what did you do? >> then i close the k, and left. >> you didn't go back into the house at that time or anything? >> now. >> they had made an agreement about that before they separated, said great agree. >> -- >> police poked around the crime scene. the only thing was, it seemed somehow staged. no physical evidence to point towards who would've wanted to misdirect to the police. except there was one curious thing. a letter in her handwriting. and the suspected sitting right in front of them. >> coming up, there was more than just a letter that might provide a clue in the case. there was also a diary. >> it was a lie. >> when dateline continues. was a lie. was a lie. >> when dateline so you won't have a medicare in the world. ♪ ♪ larry? he had himself one possible answer. his dream, was to launch a business in food photography. he as an aspiring photographer, would shoot it. >> why wasn't? it >> well, she decided to go out before i was ready. that's when she met henry and started doing food photography for him and said. >> i guess, henry, that other photographer. >> so, she did exactly what you wanted to do. just with a different guy. >> yeah. >> and then youtube work together? >> yeah. but it never happened. >> it never happened because, you already know. the affair with henry, kits confession. gregory wrote about it in his diary. this is from august 31st, 1981. kit had an affair with henry. the act has not diminish my love or devotion to her quite one bit. i find myself susceptible to this whole situation. now let's get on with our love in life and anyone who will enjoy us. as long as the joy does not hurt we have. >> you're accepting the idea that there will be two men in the situation? >> it was not accepting, it was going, all right this happened. she's a wonderful person, i can see why other people would be attracted to her. but, then we moved on, but separately. >> separately because of henry. but also because of that diary. her sister, donna, knew he kept one. she recalls asking kit about it. >> and i remember four years -- she said oh no that's his. his private book. >> but there was, and temptation one. gregory was out of town. can't read those private pages. and discovered, the man she was married to, had lied to her. whopping lies. about graduating from college. about serving in vietnam. any thought of saving the marriage was done. and cotton's lies, gregory took refuge in his diary. this is what he wrote on september 8th, 1992. all of my deceptions have come to light. no service in vietnam. did not graduate from college. and a few more to have an escape route from the relationship. >> yeah, it goes back to this guy who wanted to -- he didn't fit in. he doesn't learn very well. was not invited to parties. so, i decided to embarrass my life a little bit. and also, people like me. >> but there was more. as kid read her husband's diary, she discovered a list of women's names. where these women's that he had slept with? gregory denied it. he said these were the names of women he admired. he had never slept with any of them. >> but everything she had known about him was a lie. >> months later she filed for divorce. so when she was murdered just six days before the foreign -- divorce was finalized. it wasn't long before the family pointed a finger at gregory. but the police did not have enough evidence to arrest him. >> -- >> and here i leave the house go straight to a party. it's not like i disappeared for hours. >> you say you had no blood, people would've seen it. >> no blood no cuts. >> these are pictures from the birthday party. the man at the edge of the picture in the red hat, is gregory. most of the party said gregory was one of the first guests to arrives and one of his helpful self. >> well the separation took its toll, and gregory finally moved. he left southern california for spoken, washington. and that desiccation petered out. the case went cold. after years, it'll relinquished hope that they would never be justice for kit. which, of course, is where boyd underwood entered the story. going through that old file, those forgotten -- if he had just gotten deeper, wet secrets would be fined? here again is keith morrison, with haunting images. >> gregory moore dick wanted to first start. he was not the single father of two small daughters. bringing them up, amongst suspicion laws, where the mother was murder, was increasingly unappealing. so, gregory set up house in eastern washington. in the middle class home unspoken. he went about organizing a normal life. he was, generally, agreed an excellent father to see little girls. >> they had security, they had a parent who was very involved. >> for himself, gregory went back to his first love, taking pictures. he set up a studio in downtown spoken. photography by gregory, and kids dreadful death, 1000 miles away, faded in history. except for a family, his family, convinced right or wrong, that her killer was in fact gregory. they had after all witnessed a shouting and shoving matches that would proceed the breakup, then the murder. >> by 1985, pretty much, we knew that he had gotten away with it. >> did you ever give up on the idea that, some day, there would be justice? >> sure, in this world, i did. >> it was 1999, long after the family had given up, when boyd underwood came along. >> one of the -- asphalt will of this case in particular. >> if anyone would break the case, maybe boyd could. anaheim cops, since 1964, rolls up the ranks the homicide attacked, it was even assigned to protect president mixing. he had heard about kits murder in 1980, three but by then, he had worked in the da's office, where he retired in 95. so, what was he doing snooping around -- in 1999. simple, boyd wasn't the retiring type. he came back to work a new unit in the orange county da's office. his mission, revisit cold cases, and close them. here he was, the last chance for justice. but, then something caught his bag. >> the criminals at that time had identified a -- plastic back is being human blood, was not the same type of blood from the victim. >> in fact, in the early 80s, that's all science could tell us. that the blood on the bag was a different type in the victims. but, silently, patiently, that dna waited. in 1999, it was a whole new scientific world. >> back in 83, they had obtained a blood sample from the husband. it was his blood that was found on the last. bag >> inside a closet? >> inside. closet >> though, of course, that was also gregory's closet for more than four years. he'd only been out of the place a couple of months. boyd decided to have all the evidence retested, and, now gregory's dna turned up in several places. a tiny spot on the plaza doorknob, on a rear sliding glass door, and in a powder room sink. the amount was miniscule. so, perhaps, it meant nothing. gregory could've left it there when he lived in the house, except >> the bathroom sink had her blood and his blood mix. the sliding door was a mixture of her blood in his blood. you start getting more convinced that he was part of that crime scene. >> then, boyd, listen to the police interviews from 1980. three something jumped out. on the day gregory socket and picked up his girls, he, said he put them in their car seats, and gone back toward the house to close the front gate. when he returned to the car, he told detectives, his elder daughter asked him a question. >> what took you so long daddy? >> i said to close ugly. did you have a fight with mommy? >> i'm thinking, why would you want to put that in there. >> remember, gregory had said he never went back into the house. after strapping the girls into the car, but if his daughter complained that his father was gone too long, maybe he did go in there. and took the time to kill kit. all in all, boy decided there was enough evidence into thousand one to warrant a little visit to gregory, up unspoken. >> and he was, as he was, perfectly cooperative. he even let them search of the house. so, boyden colleagues offered gregory a chance to confess. >> tell us what happened. what happened was you went back to the house? >> i don't recall going back to the house. >> come on, greg. >> how can you not -- how can your blood be next to her blood and you not recall going back in the house? how can you not remember? you can see how week that is, and how can your wife's head be almost severed from her body and you not remember? >> but, boy did in charge him. he couldn't, because the prosecutor told him he just didn't have enough to make a case. the interview proved -- gregory had never thrown away, but it wasn't enough. >> did you think about giving up on? it >> no. >> there was something there. >> i have always thought so. >> and then, summer 2007, boyd was -- felt like he had a case, but how could he sell it to the da's office. boyd's been around for a long time, more than dna sciences changed. >> i was working with propeller heads. a step or two ahead of me. he suggested why don't you do a powerpoint. >> i said, what is a powerpoint? >> he learned fast. finally, the evidence assembled in that power point presentation, bits of gregory's blood in the house, his in kits dna mixed on that we are slider in the bathroom sink, and gregory's diaries persuaded the da. still, to solidify their case, might be why is that the da decided, for boyd to pay gregory one more visit. see if he could turn up some fresh evidence. perhaps, with luck, to puncture gregory's consistent denial, that he had gone back to the house, after putting the girls in the car. so, in 2008, 25 years after the murder, boyd took one last shot. two colleagues conducted the interview, and used an old if, on lovely, tactic. perfectly legal. they told gregory ally. it was a ruse. the detective told gregory that his dna had been found on the waistband of kits tights. he pushed gregory to explain, how could've got in there? remember, it wasn't true. but, listen to what gregory says. >> what happened that day? what happened when you went in the second time? why do you go back? and >> i took the kids out of the car, and forgot to put the president. >> what happened when you got back in the house? because that's >> i picked up the presence and left. >> you heard it, gregory changed his story. just enough to put himself in the murder scene, alone with kit. with that, a quarter century after the murder of his estranged wife, gregory monique was arrested and charged, with first of the murder. boyd called kid's brother, joe. >> i think he said, we've arrested him, and i didn't know it for, honestly. remember, i have given up. why did you arrest him? no it was not. >> i was given the evidence that this case was prove-able. >> assistants, dean wagner, believed in the case -- . he believed in the science, in the dna. >> you know the modern technology that came out. it had a story to tell. >> here's what he told the story the jury -- >> there was tiny blood drops on the plastic bag in the closet. a mix of the blood on the rear sliding door. and the piece of evidence that according to the prosecution that was credible, the bowl of the bathroom sink. kid's blood, mixed with his dna. >> if you have been if you have not been living in the house for months there's no explanation for the dna. >> then the meg nickel examiner who exhumed the body took the stand. kit was killed during pm hours. now, a quarter century later, he re-examine the report. and examined it was possible that she was killed as early as 10 am. when greg was at the house. and as for motive, there where the diaries. the one by boyd -- >> it was called a stories -- >> boy took the witness stand. he wanted me to -- painting a picture of a rejected man. he seemed tormented by the possibility to lose his children in the divorce. >> the hardest part of saying goodbye to my girls. not tucking the man. this will be devastating. it's almost incapacitating. >> the diaries were important. they gave us insight into the defendant's mind, particularly how he was really attached to his daughters. more so than the average parent would say. >> but there was more in the diaries. he confessed that there had been violence in the breakup. the last incident only weeks before kit was killed. >> goodbye katie. katie had of fight this evening. he's she struck me. i lost my temper and struck back. >> then there was the police interview. in which reacting to a police fly, gregory admitted that he was in the house with kit alone. it shows the pasta q shun opportunity, motive, and dna, greg is the murder. but is that enough? >> when you get into the details, then you see all the problems that where there. not nearly enough >> said to ten -- that voluntary sample of greg's blood? police have a little problem with that. >> when did you discover that his vial of blood had broken in the evidence room and spilled on other items. >> i don't think i was aware of that until 1999, 2000. >> his evidence sample had leaked on the defendants -- and it had hopelessly compromise the dna. besides, having greg lived with her for years, it would have mixed with his wife's blood anyways. but the wipes bloods dna was not found, on her body or close. something you would expect to find if he had slit her throat and put on her clothes. plus, at the birthday party, he did not look like he just killed someone. >> while he was there, did you notice any injuries to him? >> no. >> did you notice any blood on him? >> oh my goodness, no. >> was there anything unusual about him at the party? >> no, not at all. >> but if not gregory, then who was the killer? cool well, wait for it. through this testimony, the defense made a startling -- >> did she tell you that things were not working out? >> i believe she indicated there were some problems, yes. >> henry? the man kid left gregory for? what motive could he have? but now the implication got much bigger. >> well, if the relationship was not working out and he was going to lose her, all of a sudden he has a motive. and it's very important, that he moves on to donna, the new sister, shortly afterwards. >> yes, the little sister and him did fall in love. donna wrestled with her emotions in the beginning. >> i don't deserve this. this is weird, but it's not. because when it is human eye it is normal. >> a year after kits murder, the defense found an opportunity and pounced. >> remember the rear sighting door that they went through to find the body? henry left the door slightly ajar. just like the killer had. >> let me ask, you do you only partially closed doors when you go through? >> i don't remember closing the door, they fats how far close, day it's how fast i closed it. >> there are much weirder things about henry than greg that do not make sense. >> ludicrous. said the prosecution. henry had a alibi anyway. he was in san diego at the date of the murder. >> so greg final card. he himself. >> did you kill your wife? >> because it'll bite me now instead of being truthful. it would bite me. >> had he never been charged, had he never thrown those diaries away. >> where did you keep them? >> it was my history together. it wasn't to be thrown away. >> you even admitted that -- he must of been in viral >> yes. -- i got tired of being hit. so -- and i'm the bad guy. >> well, was he? >> you had been away for months. >> two months. two months ago. >> but,. -- >> did? she >> kitty was a terrible house cleaner. even the police said they've never seen such a filthy house. >> the defense that turned out, had been busy. they had retested the blood evidence on that we are sliding door, the one that showed a mixture of kits blood and gregory's dna. the result was quite a stunning. gregory and his daughter shared an identical blood protein. >> we were very excited because -- as it ends up, both daughters had that. >> so it was impossible, attorney said, to be absolutely certain it was only a mixture of gregory's dna and gets blood on that slider. it could've been a mixture of the entire family piled on over the years. and then, after weeks of testimony, another jury left the courtroom. the waiting began, again. >> based on the results of the first trial, i don't have the same sense of confidence the second time. >> gregory, however, was confident, as thanksgivings weekend approached. >> everybody was going, hey, we'll see you over the weekend. >> after two days, the jury rang the bell if. a verdict. >> we the jury in the above entitled action find the defendant, gregory moore dick, guilty of murder in the first degree. >> gregory, before the shock, said in thought he simply heard it wrong. >> i just couldn't believe that i did not hear not. i kept looking at the court going, there's a word missing. >> one prosecutor's door down wagner finally wear those words -- >> it's a rush. it's a relief. you think about the people behind you, what they've been through. what this will mean to them. justice for the victim. >> at the sentence hearing, kids family pronounce the words that stored up nearly 20 years. >> there is a hole in our lives. a hole left by this murder. >> i wish her children had an idea of what they've missed out on. >> oh, but they do, said gregory, and reply. they all do. >> -- and that's not true. -- >> daughters who, throughout it, all have been staunch, defenders of their father. in court, the elder of the two spoke for both parents. >> my family and i -- to another 25 years of pain and agony. i miss my mother very much, but that's not fair that my father's been taken away. >> for a long time. the sentence, 25 years to life. while he sat in jail, waiting to be transferred to a new prison line, i asked him about his daughters. gregory said -- >> i miss them. i've got their love. >> kids family, would they have? >> i think she's in my soul, even though she's not here. she's with us. >> and finally, one determined detective, officially retired, again. this case, for him, was, well, >> very emotional. >> was it worth all the time?
