>> hello, and welcome to dateline. she moved there for her own piece of heaven on earth. life on a sunny island in florida. when she vanished, her friends knew it wasn't her idea to leave. but that was about all they were sure about in this complicated missing persons case. the here is keith morrison with a place on the sand. but >> there is a little island. its own bit of fantasy off of the gulf coast of florida. >> kind of a paradise here. >> it is paradise. it just gets better and better we think. >> anna maria island, where high rise condos has seven miles of unspoiled white sand, unspoiled houses, unspoiled people to. most of them. >> when you come across the bridge, it's a whole different life. you just come across the bridge. it's like ha. >> it is. >> yeah. >> here is where she found her little paradise to. came all the way from germany. sabrina bugler. whether they called her subpoena. or a summed it, so been. they all knew her here on the island. a larger than life person. >> absolutely. the minute you met her, you were just drawn to her. she was just one of those people that you wanted to get to know better. >> even now, looking back on what happened to subpoena on the awful mystery. it just doesn't seem possible. not here. when >> nothing happens on this island, it's sweet town. >> though, and certainly not to her sabina made good things happen here. crazy things, happy things. here at the 50s motel she reimagined, along with tom bugler. within t weeks of meeting. at haley's motel. longtime friends nancy ambrose and susan fox. >> had always been her lifetime dream to have her own resort. haley's came on the market. at the time it was pretty rundown. and we were like, oh, you've got your hands full here. we knew that them could do it. the two of them could turn this around. >> and they did. tom did the fixing. sabina had the ideas. they invited the whole town to their quirky events. dress up parties. >> hello. welcome to haley's motel. please join me for a tour. this is her with jackie moe, her ever-present parrot. she was the star of her own promotional videos for the hotel. >> i hope you like our room so far. all the activities we offer you. >> neighbor barbara hines. >> sabina never saw something that had a broken wing that she didn't try to fix. sabina was a rescuer. >> people, cats, dogs, turtles. when susie fox took over the anne-marie a turtle watch. nesting turtles are a very big deal here. she asked for help. tom and so been were our fourth volunteers. there are nine sections on this island. a mile long. take as many as i needed to give them. >> i watched it with a huge leather back in the water. owns a local newspaper, the islander. >> the leather back was missing. swam in a circle and kept coming back to the beach. sabine jumped in the water without a second thought. was talking to the turtles face. like she could tell a 400 pound turtle to turn around, or will him too. >> so, you get the idea. >> she was just amazing. one of those people that cared about everybody. >> like, nancy ambrose for example. when she was battling cancer and nobody would give her a job because of her demanding treatment schedule. until the day that she met sabina. i explained what my situation was. she was like, great. >> that was one of the happiest days of my life. here she was giving me a chance. >> so, sabina had passions. animals, her motel, her white pontiac convertible. and in 2008, a new passion. campaigning for barack obama. an uphill battle on this republican island. so on election night, sabina was up for a party. she arranged to meet nancy in fact, in what they hope to turned into victory celebration. >> she was so into the election. she wanted obama to win. >> strange that when nancy arrived, she couldn't find sabina. i >> thought she had already left, because i had gotten there late. >> sabina husband tom, had been there earlier to. but without her, nancy didn't worry. >> it wasn't until a couple days later that i realized she was missing. >> how is it possible that the woman who loved celebrate didn't. the woman who loved to talk called no one. the woman who loved her hotel suddenly wasn't there. sabina was gone. >> coming up, first troubling clue. her car with somebody else at the wheel. >> flag started going off. >> who was this mystery driver? >> yes, and he had permission to drive the car. >> when they check the registration, they learned the convertible belonged to subpoena. and corona had a record. >> he was a known street criminal. had a lengthy arrest history. >> they learned from sabina friends. i there was something wrong with the story of her doing drugs and drinking with a fellow in a smoky partof town. >> she would never be buying drugs. she would not even allow people to smoke around her. she would not allow people to smoke at the hotel property. >> she was kind of a health fanatic. >> she was. had a private personal trainer. she was very in the health. >> so they arrested corona. threw him into a county jail. in the mueller earning, drove over to haley's motel to talk to sabina husband tom. and tom said he hadn't seen sabina in a couple of days. he hadn't file a missing persons report, but did after police came around. >> was he like? what was the impression of the guy? >> he was concerned for her well-being. she wouldn't answer her phone, he couldn't find her. >> and something else, according to tom. sabina never let anybody drive her car. not even him. >> now there was a stolen car, a missing woman, and unknown criminal. not adding up to a good combination for sabina. >> flag started going off. shortly thereafter, detective started getting involved as a missing persons case. >> but then it got worse. when detectives went over the car, they found blood drops in the backseat. a patch in the rear seat had been cut out. so they prove luminol around. found more blood traces in the rear see. her friends like crystal that were horrified. >> then we thought it was him. he killed her, they must have killed her. >> hours of homicide investigation, detective jeff bliss decided to pay a visit to corona in jail. i put my business card on the desk. >> we are homicide detectives, this is not a theft, we need to know the truth now. >> he said i have nothing to do with any murders. then he changed his story. >> corona's new story? he had never met anybody named sabina. just found her car found behind the placed called the gator lounge. not exactly upscale wine bar. in the jailhouse interview, corona claim that it was just a client of opportunity. >> you didn't see anybody did you? >> i don't see nobody inside the car. so that's why i decided to take the car. i go inside, then i see the keys, so i'm like oh you know what i mean? a joyride you know? >> the vehicle is left, like somebody wanted it stolen. so he just took the liberty of stealing that car. >> was the second story any more true than the first? the local paper jumped on all of this of course. lot of joy heard a lot of stories. >> a number of people who speculated that sabine might have gone to town to a obama celebration downtown. the area she would've driven through to go to that party is a very rough area. it just came to my mind that maybe she had been carjacked. >> certainly, something very bad must have happened. something, maybe, that happened in her car. so, was corona her killer? was he finally telling the truth that he stole her car outside that bar? if that was true, how did it get there? and where was subpoena? >> could it be that sabrina had plans that nobody knew about? had this free spirit simply skip town? when they found her car, there was blood in it. and the fellow who had stolen it had kept changing his story. so the logical conclusion was dark indeed. still, she could have just went back to see her family or something like that? >> yeah right, there was extensive leads and investigation to determine that. >> in fact, apparently sabrina had been seen alive and well at the local airport. her friend had heard the story. >> there were two women who are at this arizona airport and they were sure that they had saw her up ahead in line. to get onto an airplane. >> but when detectives checked out the tip, her passport wasn't used i. >> checking surveillance cameras at the airport, tampa airport. to make sure that she did not leave the country or fly out. >> couple of weeks went by that way. lots of tips, no verifiable sightings. and then finally, they got the dna back from that blood on the car. >> we're able to get her toothbrush and other items for dna comparison. we are able to match that up. that was in fact her blood. >> her husband tom, told the local news reporter that he was prepared for the worst. from that first morning when he was told about her car. >> the second that i knew, when the police told me that they had found her car without her in it and with the keys in the car, i knew that sabina was no longer with us. i knew that something had happened to her immediately. >> so, looks like this guy corona might be on the hook for murder. but beyond the blood, evidence didn't exactly jump out of him. but who else? had to be no made an enemy? >> when detectives started looking at her life, they had to cast a wide net for people that she associated with. after all, sabina was like a magnet. everybody wanted to go to her lavish parties. >> there was a waiting list to get on to her party list. >> exactly. >> she could even get a little racy. for anna maria island. >> one of the more unusual things, she hired people from germany to come to new body painting. new body painting on anne-marie island, you can't do that here. >> but sabrina did what had to be done. it can be a tough business, running and promoting a little motel. margins thin. with the economy beginning to tank in 2008. once was sunny and light, was gray with worry. sabina and tom were in trouble. neighbor barbara hines. >> the real estate market had folded. i knew from subpoena, not from don. that they were highly leveraged. >> please call me for your reservations. while sabrina used her marketing skills to keep the motel afloat. >> how may i help you? >> she and tom couldn't do the same for her marriage. after more than a decade's husband and wife, they were that in name only. but what they did not do, is to force. or divide up the business. >> they were always still good friends. very good friends. they worked well together. >> the romance park, the marriage part? >> the romance part kind of. i >> maybe romance changed. >> it certainly did. detectives couldn't help but discover. tom and serena had taken up with other people, both of them. he was a woman that he had known quite a while. she was a local artist who had once worked at the hotel as a handyman. then there was the matter of the life insurance. how much did he take it on subpoenas life, the cops asked. $100,000 said tom. despite what was apparently an amicable breakup, people on anne-marie island couldn't help but wonder about tom. more than a few said that subpoenas friend karen hodge. >> people whispering. kind of suspecting him in a way. just because they didn't know. >> photographer jackie elk outdid promotional stills for the hotel and did good friends with tom and sabrina. there was no evidence. >> everything was speculative, who did it. it was a who did it. this is a murder mystery of epic proportions. >> so it was. and then, 12 days after sabrina vanished. off the face of the earth. somebody set fire to haley's motel. >> i am sure my mouth was hanging open. just going, can this get any more bizarre. what >> was this all about? an attempt to destroy evidence? or wet? around town, some people wondered if tom had something to do with the. others dismissed that as just plain nonsense. photographer jack, covered the -- fire for the island newspaper. >> that's when the mystery really started, wow, another element of this puzzle. >> why would somebody do that? >> it's kind of bizarre. surely it had something to do with what happened to sabina. >> why would that place burned down? someone was trying to destroy some evidence, or something? >> it's a theory. we were not sure if something happened there, she was buried somewhere, we did not know. >> months went by, without a decent lead. it was not for lack of trying to find one. especially with their instincts were telling them, that subpoena might be buried at the beach. >> we would come out here to this spot, and we would stand here, and view the case, and brainstorm the case. >> detective sergeant and his partner kept organizing searches on the beach. looking for any area fee where the ground or the sand beach looked disturbed. >> we took cadaver dogs, walk them along the beach, use ground penetrating radar. check the various spots on the beach, to try and find skeletal remains. >> to no avail. in november 2009, the first anniversary of whatever it was that happened on the beach subpoena loved, they have a little memorial. tom tossed a flower wreath into the surf. >> there was no hope. we knew. she was gone. she was no longer alive. >> apparently, the life insurance company was not so sure. right around the time of that memorial service at the beach, tom went to court to take the first step to get that money. >> wasn't it tom to petition the court to declare her dead? >> yes. >> if she's declared dead, he gets a lot of insurance money. he gets the ownership of the motel. >> correct. >> yes, funny tom had told the detectives before he held a 100,000 dollar policy on sabina. when he filed papers to declare her dead, it turned out there was a second larger life insurance policy, that he forgot to mention. >> it came up later, it was 300,000. >> the revelation made the newspapers. attorneys for the insurance companies argued that, under florida law, sabina had to be missing at least five years, before she could be declared dead. and any insurance money, paid out. after hearing reporters noticed an unusual group of observers listening to the proceedings. >> the whole back row of seats were taken up by sheriff deputies. >> tom was not successful. >> they denied a death certificate, tom was denied insurance. i could see, how they could deny a death certificate, there was nobody. >> and then the police knew, corona did not kill sabina. they were able to confirm the essentials of the story, so he was convicted of car theft, not murder. detective kenny, who was an island a cop that known sabina and tom for years, decided to have another try, much closer to home. he asked tom for any details, no matter how small, that might take the investigation beyond the conjecture and whispers of suspicion. that floated on the island breeze. >> he wanted to hold -- the whole background of their courtship, their marriage, and how it disintegrated. >> how did it disintegrate? >> he told me that it just slowly, grew apart. and that they stay together, because they were very good friends. and they owned a business together. >> but, this seemed unusual. well they stayed married, they moved in with other people. remember, in the year before subpoena went missing, tom started dating a new woman. and, sabrina took up with a handsome younger man, who once worked at the motel. his name was bill. bill number. >> the man was very charismatic, drop dead gorgeous. >> years later, sabina was 49. and bill was 39, and very different than tom. tom, meanwhile, was sabina's business partner. things got dicey, they found tom -- they found sabina in the hotel room with bill. >> caught him having sex, he said it was not a jealousy thing, it was lack of respect. having sex with his wife in the hotel room. >> not jealous? maybe. still, the detectives knew that kind of thing, could drive some type of person, to do terrible things. tom and bill, did one of them harm sabina? they interviewed bill, the first time, back when sabina's stolen car was found. learned in 2008, they started dating. eventually, they moved into an apartment together. sabina told her friends, she hit the jackpot with bill. friends like joyce. >> she even had his picture, in her wallet. she was so proud that he was so handsome. i can see where she was head over heels. >> maybe this was going to be the love of her life, they were going to have a wonderful future together. >> the last time sabina's friend saw her, she was with bill. jack had never met him before. >> she came over to me, gave me a big kiss and hug, how are you? she introduced this man to me, and he shook my hand. hey jack, how are you doing? longtime lucy. i'm looking at the sky thinking, i don't really know this guy. >> the question was, did anybody know bill? >> coming up. >> i think the world is missing somebody. somebody special. >> emotion from bill. and a surprise from a stranger. >> he said, you have no idea which you have just done. >> was he about to blow the case wide open? zicam is the #1 cold shortening brand! highly recommend it! zifans love zicam's unique zinc formula. it shortens colds! zicam. zinc that cold! when sabina disappeared, in 2000, eight detectives took a good look at the two men closest to her. the estranged husband, tom, and the boyfriend bill camber, with whom she was living at the time. >> in any missing persons case, you look at the inner circle first. >> bill gave detectives his story, the night you disappear. sabina left his place at 10 pm, intending to go to that obama victory party. next thing he knew, detectives were at his door, saying they found her car, and there was blood inside. a few days after that, bill told his story again, to a local tv reporter. >> it's a tragedy. i think the world is missing somebody, somebody special. >> he told a reporter, he blamed himself in a way. because sabina left after they argued about his smoking. >> i feel responsible for leaving, leaving here. as far as what happened after that, i have no idea. >> the detectives weren't busy looking at records, and discovered that a bill once spent some time behind bars. that was after, and unrelated to his stint as a handyman at the motel. tom and sabina went to see him in prison, sent him money, and wrote to him. and he wrote back. >> tom, i think, -- she started writing him back, trying to help him. >> sabina and tom's romance cooled, the romance eat it up. when he was released on probation on 2008, sabina was waiting for him. sabina's friends however did not share her enthusiasm for bill. >> they did not want him to be around her, they pretty much said, if you are going to come, don't bring that guy. >> they saw something off about him. >> yes. that she did not. >> now, sabrina saw a young fifth artistic man, who just needed a break. he's something of an amateur artist, though his sketches did not seem to amount to much. but, sabina was determined to help build jump-start his career. get his artwork sold, maybe start-up a woodworking business. >> she had set him up in a wooded shop, bought all of his tools. >> around town, they certainly looked like lovebirds. still, two weeks after sabina vanished, the detectives asked bill to come in for another interview. that is when he told them about, the argument. but, did they push him? did they challenge him? yes they did. but, try as they might, bill cumber did not crack. so they sent him home. but kept an eye on him. >> what made you think he was the guy, who would have killed her? they were going out together. >> they had an argument that day. >> was there any other evidence that pointed to it, besides that? >> without sabina to pay the rent, he was evicted. the detectives got permission to get in, to sweep. >> the first time i entered the apartment, it was a heavy scent of bleach. >> how long after? >> 4 to 5 weeks? >> bleach was still strong at that point? >> we went in and searched it. we found additional blood evidence, with dna. >> what did all of that say to you? >> something bad happened right there. >> bill told the detectives that was innocent blood. sabina once cut herself here. and then they found bill's dna on the driver seat of subpoenas car. but he told detectives, she let him drive it. >> we knew that no one even, her husband was not allowed to drive her car. >> then they looked at his hand. >> he had an injury on his hand was consistent with the friction burn. >> from the shovel? >> getting it on the palm of your hand. >> just from traveling. >> bill said that he had fell off his bike. the more detectives looked at bill camber, the worse it look for him. the reason he did time in prison for example? he was convicted of arson. >> he was jealous of his girlfriend. they had an argument, he tried to burn the house down with her in the kids and. >> turns out that the haley's motel fire was intentionally started with accelerant. bill's shoes were tested later, and had traces of accelerant to. but that was not enough to make a case. so, do they arrest bill and charged with murdering subpoena? no they did not. a nobody case would be very tough said the prosecutor's. there was no proof that the woman was even dead. so the detectives turned up the heat. >> somebody knocking out the door, i want to talk to you. >> we had a legitimate safety concern for other residents. especially if he wound up getting with another female. >> and bill couldn't take it. he left an a maria highland. left the county. unfortunately for him, that was a probation violation. so before long, bill was in jail. while the detectives kept looking for sabrina. everywhere, no trace. then in 2011, three days or she disappeared. ed moss was cleaning brush on the island on the beach. >> underneath a lot, there was kind of a small purse. looked stolen said head. he showed it to a deputy. >> his eyes got really big. he looked at me and said, you have no idea what you have just a. >> it was my sabina purse. her drivers license confirmed. >> we had this league. as far as the purse being recovered, it was only two blocks to the north of where they actually lived. so >> detectives kenny endless brought an army of police equipment and started searching the area for her remains. after weeks of digging through the sand ambush, nothing. >> both of us were obsessed with this case. we know he did. >> the other thing that he knew was that tom did do it. >> remember, some people on the island had been suspicious of tom. detectives had long since cleared him. >> i could tell that he didn't do it. we alibied him. we did everything that needed to be done to make sure. my >> parents his attempt to cash at the insurance policy so quickly was a matter of survival. >> i never thought that tom had anything to do with this. >> so with tom in the clear, detectives consulted with other jurisdictions on how they handled nobody cases. lined up all of the forensics and circumstantial evidence and finally the prosecutor told him they were ready. in 2012, four years after sabrina vanished, bill comer was indicted for second-degree murder. but it was not going to be an easy case. >> obviously, evidence that goes with the body. cause of death, manner of death. we didn't have that. but >> would it take for a jury to believe that handsome bill was a killer? >> said he had nothing to do with, it or didn't want to talk to us. >> of course, they didn't believe that. detectives were sure that bill killed subpoena. and in 2015 they thought they had an offer that he couldn't refuse. >> we had the blessing of a state attorney to offer them a deal. >> the deal, tell the detectives where to find the body. >> my hair on my neck stands up. that's a very telling statement. an innocent man is going to say that they didn't do it. >> his trial was just months away. detectives approached the one person who maybe could persuade bill to take the deal. >> detective bliss took the defense attorney into our property office and viewed all the evidence. >> there was subpoenas blood on the couch. converse hands with the blisters that believe came from burying her. and the evidence in her car. the cut up upholstery with her blood and bill's dna. >> they want to come here and said, you know, we are going to have a tough time with us. get >> prty soon, prosecutor are brown got a call. >> i received a feeler from mr. comer's defense attorney that said he might be interested in a police officer. 20 years if he told the location of spin. >> what do you know, bill bennett. on october 15, a bearded bill camber pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. then he sat down to answer questions with a tape recorder rolling. >> where was that interview like? >> chilling. >> according to bill, the argument about smoking was just part of it. the bad part started when subpoena told him they were don. so soon said they can't go on with this anymore. what happens at that point? >> i lose control. and i hitter in the head with my fist. and it's a disgusting situation man. >> what's your reaction to getting struck? but >> she got scared uncovers or face with their hands. >> would you do at that point? >> i reached and grabbed her throw, started choking her. >> show current ill she stopped moving. she never fought back. but >> did he seem remorseful? >> somewhat. he was kind of cheerio. just getting it off his chest. >> i couldn't believe what i did. i stared down. all kinds of things were going through my mind. i couldn't believe what i had done. >> he took a seat off the bed and rolled it up. waited about an hour in tractor out of the car. put her in the back c. where she bled on the place that he had cut off the upholstery. and he drove to the beach to bury her. >> did you bring a shovel with you? >> yes. >> on the way to bury her, he stole a shovel from haley's motel. then after he buried her, he drove to the gator lounge. left the keys in the car, hoping somebody would steal it. then took a bus bound to the island and charlie back home. >> i thought he minimized certain aspects of his involvement in the murder. >> in a must? what >> he says that it was just a split second moment of insanity. i think there was a little bit more calculation than that. >> after the interview, detective bliss put bill in the car and drove to the beach. >> then, in handcuffs and leg appearance, he shuffled down a long path to a place in the sand where he had often sow subpoena. this is where he brought her body. >> a spot that used to sit at all the time right down the road from hell is motel. barry here on the beach there. >> right here, or her and serena came to watch the sunset. >> right here?
