i said i'm an artist, and i'm trying to do a project about women being the pillar of their country. she said we need art here. go home, leave your bag, leave everything tomorrow, come back the same place. you see that street, go up the street all the way. anyone who stops you tell them you're coming to see me. when i got up there, she was waiting for me in the main square and she said we want to introduce you to someone from the community. i was like yeah, sure, who? his name is mauricio. he's a photographer. in my head i'm like, okay, cool. i don't really need a photographer. i need to know how i can paint on the house, i want to take portraits. she said, no, you need to talk to mauricio. he's born there, raised there, knows everyone. rather than explaining what i wanted to do, i took portrait from other project and using my computer, i placed eyes on the house. and i brought him that piece of paper. then he understood. he smiled because suddenly it was a project. oh, you know this one? that's my neighbor. and we walked through. >> he wants to know if he can paste on your house. what is it? is it political? >> no, no, it's not political. >> is it going to damage my house? >> no, no. come in, you want to do it now? no, no, we're not ready. i'm asking if you want. of course, just come and do it. so i take the paper and i go, okay, check. so then we went to the next house. check. maybe saturday or sunday because her husband was working so we'll have it on the weekend. most of the people were like, sure, do it. maurice said okay, you need to meet the head of the drug dealer. so one night we walk down, machine guns, grenade, bullet-proof jackets. we arrived and there was three leaders and they asked us straight away, what do you want? we're artists from france and he came with me. we have our computer. i said look, this is what we done in france. this is not that. i should have read palestine project, we paste on the wall in israel, palestine. one of the guys say what is israel/palestine? [ speaking foreign language ] [ speaking foreign language ]. hey, have you heard from him. >> today he's still in the hall in delta. i'm not sure. i'm so worried because he got a really weak health condition. one of the ice ladies said they're going to get a permit from the judge to force feed us. >> is calling you from. >> irwin county detention center. >> hi, nilson. how are you? >> i'm, i'm okay. i mean, you know. i haven't eaten for 5 days today. nothing. we haven't drink any water also, taken any of my medicines. when i get up. honestly, i'm feeling weak. this is very unhumanitarian and, i mean, we haven't committed no crime. we are not hurting nobody. we didn't behave aggressively in any way whatsoever. so it's really hard to understand why they are treating us this way. [ speaking foreign language ]. >> i talked to him for the first time in 6 years. he said something to me he never said before. you know, this was a bond that we have together. i just feel like i am losing that bond, you know. i just want to be able to be with him. now it's up to us to protect. economic opportunity for everybody, our children and our grandchildren. d our grandchildren. [ speaking foreign language ]. >> somebody who was detained by ice in the facility of stewart passed away. he was shoeking because we know there are people but we all hope that nobody dies. you know what i mean? >> we're askings a a threshold matter for these 11 petitioners to be released. >> i have already ruled on that, and i haven't heard anything terribly persuasive to change my mind on that. >> a whistleblower, a nurse working in a georgia immigrations and customs enforcement ice facility levels honestly ghastly allegations. it lacked protection against coronavirus for detained immigrants. >> we didn't have anything to sanitize with. we didn't have the proper ppe. the first case of covid in the facility, it was covid is not here in this facility. [ speaking foreign language ]. >> women in that facility say that a doctor was performing procedures for which no medical indication existed. >> i said nobody informed me that i'm going to do a surgery. all of a sudden, i get up. that's when i know they went through my bellybutton. i got three big holes. he never explained anything to me, and i never agreed. >> that's outside irwin? when did that happen? >> now. >> they're saying "abolish ice". >> we're just leaving this irwin county detention center. there was one woman in particular. she described the experience here as torture. >> what's going on? >> not much. >> i see your shirts. >> we just feel like we got to do something, man. there is too much going on outside, and we can't ignore it. even though there is nothing we can do, but at least like this we feel like we are part of it. >> sure. at the beginning of the pandemic, my planning were up ended. i had plans to report stories for magazines that i write for. i was trying to figure out how i was going to continue as a print reporter as this pandemic was spreading to develop news stories to cover the pandemic on the beats that i already work on. and, so, i began making a series of calls through a video app that's installed inside a set of ice detention centers that allow people on the inside to call into people on the inside to have short conversations 15 minutes at a time using these video apps. they're really made for family members to call people on the inside so they could maintain contact. they're pretty expensive. but as a reporter, i decided it was worth it to pay per minute to get this access to figure out what was happening inside ice detention centers as the pandemic was turning the world upside down. >> and the facility, did they try to fight you when they realized what you were doing? when did they know that basically some, you know, somebody was doing and some -- some detainees were participating in a journalistic exercise? >> so lots of journalists were using these video apps to record what was happening inside the detention scepters. in fact, it allowed us as reporters to gain a level of access that's very, very difficult without that kind of video access. in fact, you know, in a way the pandemic and the sort of just move by all of us to start using video communication tools, it made it possible for me to get inside of an ice facility that i probably never would have been able to get into otherwise. >> right. >> the detention center at one point, and i wrote about this in "the new york times" magazine story that i published last year did separate my access to the video app. and some of the people inside lost access to the tablets that they use to have these conversations. i was able to sign back up and sign back in and continue having these conversations. and collecting footage that ultimately resulted in the documentary of the facility. >> but it allowed you in some ways to briefly take us into the facility which made yours stand out. let's take nelson. he doesn't know why he was held for as long as he was held and he's not sure why his release, at least as far as the film is concerned. can you fill in some of the blanks? >> ice detention and just to fill in some background here, it's civil detention. it's not prison. it is not meant as punishment, at least as a legal matter. it is a thing that exists to hold non-citizens facing the threat of deportation so they don't leave, so they show up in court. nearly everybody who is detained in ice detention could actually be released at any point at the discretion of immigration and customs enforcement. and policy shifts from administration to administration about who is detained, who is prioritized, who is held in detention, who is released and who is left to stay home. the people in my film really had no idea when they would be released. they were detained pursuant to policy at the time under the trump administration that nearly anybody who could be detained would be detained. so he had been pulled over for a driving violation and was locked up in ice detention after an arrest following the driving violation. andrea had come to los angeles from columbia by plane with a tourist visa. >> right. >> intended to enter the country. but when officials at the airport asked her if she feared returning to her country, she was detained and treated as an arriving asylum seeker. under the trump administration, they were summarily detained. she was held for nearly two years without any idea when she would be released. >> both are still here. both are still in america. they weren't sent away out of country, correct? >> that's correct. >> so they were held for months, and then let -- let -- allowed to stay, period. >> that's right. andrea is in court proceeding through her asylum case. he's waiting for a green card. he's married to a u.s. citizen. he probably was never going to be deported, actually. he was probably going to win his case. but because ice had the discretion to hold him at the time, they as a policy matter were holding anybody they could. so he stayed in detention for close to a year actually while he was fighting his case. and through this film, the facility, i really tried to bring people inside because for most of the pandemic, for the beginning of the pandemic, the early months of the pandemic, i sort of attached myself to this computer screen in order to have these conversations with people and to observe what life was like inside of an ice facility that's really built with the intention to separate people from the outside world. >> right. and that's certainly not intended for months, maybe a day or two. these are topics that the public tries to look away from at times. this is all part of our system. if we don't like it, we should do something about it, and sometimes you have to see something that's a bit uncomfortable in order to make change. seth, congratulations. i appreciate you participating in our film festival. >> thanks. they were the first to be verified by usp, an independent organization that sets strict quality and purity standards. nature made. the #1 pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand.
