we are waiting right now for a news conference with outgoing new york city mayor, bill de blasio, and actually, his incoming mayor, eric adams. we'll bring that to you as soon as it gets underway. meantime this morning, dr. anthony fauci telling nbc's chuck todd that omicron is raging through the world and could possibly replace the delta variant as the dominant strain. right now, omicron makes up about 3% or so of u.s. cases. and with hospitals already at their breaking point, the rise of omicron is fueling worries about another covid winter. the cdc predicts cases could spike by 55%. so we're going to get all the latest from reuters' white house correspondent jeffrey mason, but first to my colleague kathy park who's here in the studio with me, with the very latest happening around the globe, including here in new york city. as you know, the second day in a row that the city has broken its record for positive cases, so what's the latest beyond even just that? >> a lot of changing headlines, alex. it's almost like deja vu, with the rapid rise in covid cases forcing the country to take extra precautions. last night, "snl" still put on a show, but they featured a limited cast, no musical performance, and no live audience, similar to what we saw at the beginning of the pandemic. >> reporter: rising covid cases being blamed for major disruptions all across the country, even "saturday night live". >> whoa! where is everybody? >> kenan, haven't you heard? >> heard what? about that thing that's going around? >> yeah, covid. >> is that real? >> reporter: the show deciding there would be no live audience due to a recent spike in the omicron variant. the last-minute changes cut out the musical get charli xcx who tweeted, i am devastated and heartbroken. the wave is stretching into the sports wave, too. nine brooklyn nets players have entered the nba's health and safety protocols, while the nfl postponed three games this weekend following outbreaks. the league and player's association releasing a joint statement regarding new measures, which will include a more targeted testing plan, more flexibility for players teend meetings virtually, and also a high-risk player opt-out for the remainder of the season. case counts fueled by omicron are rising at an alarming rate. the variant now detected in nearly all 50 states, leading to long lines for tests. >> nearly three hours now. >> reporter: in new york city, the pandemic is dimming the holiday spirit, shutting down the radio city rockettes and some broadway shows. late saturday, cnn announcing its offices are closing to non-essential employees. it's getting so bad in europe, the mayor of london declared a major incident again. >> over the last 24 hours, we have had the largest number of new cases since this pandemic began. >> reporter: back in the u.s., doctors pleading with the public to get vaccinated, as they brace for a dark winter. >> we never got back to our pre-pandemic levels, so everyone i know is busy. we are busy. we're worried that it continues to be even busier into a very difficult time of year. >> and the surge in covid cases is upending students' lives. some students from maryland to new jersey are shifting back to virtual learning just days before winter break. harvard also announcing this weekend that they are going remote for the first part of january. and that list likely to grow, alex. >> you've got to wonder, what is it not upending these days? i know you'll keep abreast of what's happening, so thank you so much for that and that report as well. let's bring in stanley barry, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and white house reuters correspondent jeff mason. jeff, you first here. on tuesday, as you know, the president will be delivering a speech to the nation addressing the omicron variant, probably extensively covid in general. what is he planning on saying that we haven't heard already? >> well, that's a terrific question, alex. i would start by saying, i think he'll probably repeat what he said last week. and i was in the room in the roosevelt room that day when he said he expects to see a winter of death and severe illness for people who are unvaccinated. and i can tell you, that was his -- during his meeting with his covid team and it just felt grim. they seemed worried, and i think they had reason to be. and that's because of all the reporting you've already been sharing. the omicron variant is spreading throughout the world. and is really upending, again, this pandemic, which is the same thing that the delta variant did. so to get back to your question, i think he will talk about that. i think he will give a stark warning again that people who are not vaccinated need to get vaccinated. and that people who are not boosted need to get boosted. and those numbers, despite the fact that they keep asking people to get their booster shots, are still pretty low. so i think you'll hear him repeating that. and then perhaps they'll unveil a few other measures as well in terms of how they're going to help communiies dealing with this. but the truth is, they've been talking about have the right tools and the toolbox to address this. i don't know what they have left up their sleeve that would be different from thursday that he'll unveil on tuesday, but he definitely wants to emphasize the danger. >> you know, dr. barry, during this speech, we have the president expected to unveil this new winter plan with some additional guidelines, some of which jeff has just articulate there had, i'm sure, but realistically from a medical perspective, what more can the administration do to curb the spread? >> i think just emphasizing what jeff just said, in terms of vaccination, masking, all of those things. and probably keeping gatherings to a minimum. i don't know what else the administration can do. probably increasing the availability and the speed of running covid tests would be helpful, but i think that the main problem right now is human behavior and the refusal of a significant part of the population to be vaccinated. >> yeah. i know you've seen that particularly with your ob/gyn community there. i know a lot of pregnant women who have not gotten their vaccination -- vaccinations for legitimate concerns, certainly, but it has been hard for them, as well. let me ask you, doctor, as well. the interview in the "l.a. times" that vice president kamala harris did, in which she said, quote, we didn't see delta coming. i think most scientists did not, upon whose advice and direction we have relied didn't see delta coming. and then she went on to say, sir, that we didn't see omicron coming, and that's the nature of what this -- this awful virus has been, which as it turns out, has mutations and variants. i'm curious to your reaction to those specific comments. do you think the scientific community could have done a better job at sounding the alarm? did the scientific really not see these things coming? >> the scientific community definitely sees mutations coming. and the basic biologic principle is that wherever organisms or cells are rapidly reproducing, like this virus, in mass quantities, trillions, dna mistakes are made, which are otherwise called mutations. and most of those mistakes don't help the virus, but in the case of delta and omicron, those mistakes help the virus either to become more transmissible. it's the natural evolution for viruses, usually, to become less virulent, but in this case, we know for a fact that the more that we don't do to stop the transmission of this disease, the more it's going to reproduce and mutate and of course the scientific community predicted that mutations would occur. >> yeah. so, jeff, yesterday, while discussing the president's upcoming speech, jen psaki seemed to somewhat clarify the vice president's statement saying, we are prepared for the rising case levels and potus will detail how we will respond to this challenge. he will remind americans that they can protect themselves from covid-19 by getting vaccinated and getting their booster shot when they are eligible. i'm just -- why do you think the administration felt they needed to elaborate in this way, to really kind of clarify? >> because they had to do damage control. what vice president harris said there is completely off-message for this administration. it did put a little bit of a lens, perhaps, into what was going on last summer. i don't think it's probably wrong to say that they didn't see delta coming. scientists, perhaps, but the administration, you'll recall, in june and july, the president specifically, was saying that by the fourth of july, we should be not done with the virus, but in a really good place. and of course, then delta came. i think after delta came, the reality of these variants mutating and being a reality, as dr. barry was referring to, became very clear to this administration. and i think that's why the vice president's comments did not go down very well in the west wing. >> and quite frankly, dr. barry in answer right there said, no, the scientists knew. last question to you for this panel, dr. barry, and that is, is there anything you've learned about omicron specifically in the last couple of beex that either concerns or surprises you. >> the concern is, of course, that omicron seems to be so much more transmissible, even than delta. and to echo the words of dr. hotez, who was on before me, in terms of the severity, we just don't have the data yet to know whether that virus is a more virulent, if you will. we do know that in terms of pregnant women, and that's the population that i deal with, their risk of severity, once they get the disease is clearly higher. their risk of winding up on a ventilator in the icu is clearly higher. and their risk of death is clearly higher. and a lot of this comes from what you've heard in the news called the cytokine storm, which is, those are molecules that help cells communicate, but they enhance inflammation and pregnant women are much more prone to be the victims of cytokine storms and sepsis in particular. and this can necessitate early delivery. it probably leads to two big complications, preeclampsia, which is a hypertensive disorder, specifically of pregnancy, and to premature labor. and i can't emphasize enough the importance of pregnant women getting vaccinated, vaccination does not lead to an increase in miscarriage. it does not degrees fertility. all of these are myths and lies that are on the internet. i can't emphasize enough, get vaccinated if you're pregnant. >> i'm so glad you said that. dr. stanley barry, thank you so much for joining us, and i want to thank you for sending your book, a fight for full disclosure. it is a novel. i hope you got a little bit of a break as you were writing that book for yourself. a little bit of a break of the kind of intense work that you every day. we look forward to seeing you again. jeff, i'll get your insights about the hour's other big story. you know it has to be about politics. stay right there. we have more breaking news to report for you this hour. one of the key pieces of president biden's agenda has now hit critical walls in congress. senator joe manchin, one of the 50 senators needed to pass the president's build back better act making clear today he is not going to vote for the social spending package. >> i have always said this, brett. if i can't go home and explain it to the people in west virginia, i can't vote for it. and i cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. i just can't. i've tried everything humanly possible. i can't get there. >> you're done? this is -- this is a "no"? >> this is a "no" on this legislation. i have tried everything i know to do. >> wow. the "no" heard around the country. while reaction to this breaking news has been pouring in today from both sides of the aisle. last hour right here on my show, congresswoman maxine waters had a pretty strong message for senator manchin. >> one person that will hold up assistance to the american people is absolutely disgusting and amazing to me. in that bill, we have the child tax credit, where we are having to eliminate poverty for children in this country. i have in that bill money for housing, the cost of housing is exploding. we need to build affordable housing. we need to do something about homelessness. if he wants to be that person that will stand up before the american people and deny assistance to the people of this country, put the bill up on the floor and let him vote it up or down. >> joining us now, nbc's josh letterman in wilmington, delaware, and julie stirken on capitol hill. if the build back better act has been struck down, how will that affect president biden's other key agenda items? >> reporter: well, there really is no vehicle for president biden's agenda if this bill is really dead, alex. this was the whole ball game. and it's difficult to see absent this piece of legislation how any of biden's major priorities actually move forward in the new year. and that's the reason that there is such frustration and concern at the white house right now, where for months, white house officials and president biden have really been deferential to joe manchin, even as there was all of this back and forth and accusations from some democrats on the hill that manchin was moving the goalpost, you really never saw the white house criticize joe manchin at all. they wanted to keep this copacetic, they wanted to work with him in good faith. but now after these comments on fox from manchin today, the gloves are clearly off. the white house spokeswoman, jen psaki, releasing a statement that accused joe manchin of saying one thing and doing another. she also in this statement, is divulging internal details about negotiations that took place, saying that on tuesday, manchin actually came to the white house and gave biden in person a written proposal of framework that he could support that was of the same size and scope, according to the white house, as what biden had supported. and sake saying that while there were some differences between them, they really felt like there was a compromise that they could reach, based on the fact that manchin showed up, paper in hand, with something that he told biden he was willing to support. now sake says in her statement, senator manchin promised to continue conversations in the days ahead and to work with us to reach that common ground. if his comments on fox and written statements indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position and a breach of his commitments in the senate. the white house pointing out not once but twice in that statement that manchin chose to go on fox news to make that announcement. but here's what manchin said in that interview about the reasoning behind his decision. >> when this all came about and i went and spoke to the leader schumer at that time and i explained to him where i was and the concerns i had, and at $1.5 trillion is where i thought the most that we could do, if we just did and basically took care of the things of the things we thought were the highest priorities. if you're going to do something and do it, pick our prized priorities are, what most people do in their families or their businesses and fund them for ten years and make sure that they deliver the services for ten years. it's hard to deliver service for one year or three years or five years, and how are we going to continue them unless it's going to put a burden or we have to go back and make adjustments. but we should be up-front and pick our priorities. >> reporter: if there is any pathway forward for build back better at this point, alex, i think you just heard senator manchin describe it right there. he's essentially saying, nothing i'm going to support that is not paid for for ten years, which means that the white house would have to essentially choose one or two of these things. because funding, for example, just the tax credit for children for ten years, that would eat up most of the $1.5 or $1.7 trillion ma manchin has said that he would agree to. so essentially, if the white house says, here are the one or two things that we want in this bill, we will fund them for ten years, and stay within that cap that senator manchin has laid out, it's possible, perhaps, there could be some room for negotiation on this going forward. >> can i just say on a practical note, i got the printout of jen psaki's statement. i do not remember, josh, the last time i saw one statement this long, this intensely focused on one person. there's some rumblings going on in the white house -- >> and a member of the president's own party, for that matter. >> right. and someone whom which they believed they had at least a working conversation. that's a lot. josh, thank you for giving us all the bullet points and all the important stuff. let's go from there now to nbc's julie tsirken. what are you hearing after senator manchin's announcement from the hill? >> hearing all of these statements poorpouring in from progressives makes me think that the only people who weren't surprised are progressives. they said that they knew they had the leverage they had only when these two pieces of legislation were linked, and as soon as democratic leadership decoupled them, they knew that they were going to be able to get build back better the way they saw it, across the finish line and to president joe biden's desk. let's listen to what cori bush said earlier on our air. >> when i think about this "no," this was a "no" all along. so what we had was a bit of leverage, which was having the coupling of the two bills, the infrastructure package, as well as the build back better act. having those couple together was the only leverage we had, and what did the caucus do? we tossed it. and for me, it's really -- it's sad, it's sad for us to say, let's look good instead of being good. >> yeah, look, all of my sources all along in the last couple of months, and even manchin himself has said that they don't want a bill this sized. that manchin doesn't want something this expansive. i'm struck what he said just a couple of weeks ago to the "wall street journal." he's talking to these more right-leaning conservative organizations like fox news as well, appealing to those folks that watch those programs. he said, listen, i always thought the reconciliation package was too expansive. i think reconciliation should not be used for a massive social reconciliation like democrats are doing. that's what he said in the beginning of december. now when you look at what progressives are saying, they are frustrated, because for a long time in the house, they held up the bipartisan infrastructure bill from passing on the floor, until they had a commitment on build back better. and we have a new statement from pramila jayapal, the chair of the progressive caucus, saying that senator joe manchin made a promise to president biden and he routinely tout he's a man of his word, but he can no longer say that. alex? >> okay. the hits keep on coming on joe manchin. thank you so much. appreciate that, julie tsirkin. jeff mason is back with me. in the last hour, white house press secretary jen psaki put out that statement, i was referencing it, it's pretty long, dense and all about joe manchin. here's in part what she said. weeks ago, senator manchin committed to the president at his home in wilmington to support the build back better frame work that the president then subsequently announced. senator manchin pledged repeatedly to negotiate on finalizing that framework on good faith. and just as senator manchin reversed his position on build back better this morning, we will continue to press him to see if he will reverse his position yet again, to honor his prior commitment and be true to his word. that's pretty much reflecting what julie tsirkin just told us, coming in from pramila jayapal, yeah, he's not a man of his word. do you really think the white house had no idea that manchin was going to pull his support? >> i think that's a good question, because it seems so illogical based on how closely they've been working together, but i think jen psaki's statement makes that very clear. the fact that he went and said "no" on fox news was a surprise. it's a blow. it's a blow on multiple levels. it's a blow because as josh ledderman rightly pointed out, this is president biden's full agenda. it's all right there in that bill. that's the vehicle. and if senator manchin now absolutely won't support it, it's just a huge, huge strike against what president biden and many people in his party were trying to push for. but secondly, it's a blow in terms of that working relationship, which as you just read out, alex, in that statement. if they met at president biden's home in wilmington and felt they had his word to move on. so i think this is long answer on my part to your short question, i don't think they knew. and i think that's one reason that anger is coming out in that statement. >> never edit yourself, my friend, on this broadcast. i could listen to you all day. thanks for sticking around. meantime, the hidden truth of the january 6th texts. mary trump joins us next to talk about what donald trump donald trump jr. texted mark meadows and why trump jr. could not convince his dad to stop the violence. . could not convince his dad to stop the violence o man, that's a whole lot of wrinkly at least my shoes look good! looking good start with bounce wrinkleguard, the megasheet designed to prevent wrinkles in the dryer. every day in business brings something new. so get the flexibility of the new mobile service designed for your small business. introducing comcast business mobile. you get the most reliable network with nationwide 5g included. and you can get unlimited data for just $30 per line per month when you get four lines or mix and match data options. available now for comcast business internet customers with no line-activation fees or term contract required. see if you can save by switching today. comcast business. powering possibilities. what does a foster kid need from you? >> my reaction is pretty much what it is every time i hear donald lying and obfuscating and continuing to get away with his lies, is that he will stoop to nothing. there is no bottom here. and he's very mindful that he is being given an opportunity to continue to muddy the water and quite honestly, rewrite history, which is an incredibly dangerous moment for this country. and he's not going it for any other reason than that he believes it will allow him to continue to stay the leader of the republican party and maybe even regain power in this country. >> so even when he says that there was love in that crowd, do you think he really believes that? >> i think he doesn't understand what that word means, honestly. and i'm not kidding. i really do not believe that donald trump understands what love is, what it feels like to love somebody or to be loved. because nobody who does understand that concept could possibly equate the violence, the vitriol, the racism, the anti-american sentiments that were expressed on january 6th during that violent insurrection could possibly confuse it with anything resembling love. >> that's an extraordinary statement there. something that trump was not asked about by bill o'reilly last night was the text messages that were made public this week, including one from your cousin, donald trump jr., texting former white house chief of staff mark meadows saying, quote, we need an oval office address. he has to lead now. it has gone too far and gotten out of hand. and that wasn't the only text from d.j.t. jr. he also wrote, quote, he's got to condemn this -- and then there was an expletive -- asap. the capitol police tweet was not enough. mary, are you surprised to see these tweets from donald trump jr. and that they were sent to mark meadows? >> no, none of the panicked texts from anybody really surprised me, because i think many of these people, including my cousin, knew what was happening -- what was going to happen on january 6th, but it got out of control. and they knew it and they knew that the only person who could rein it in was donald. it also doesn't surprise that donald didn't confront his father directly, because quite honestly, donald doesn't listen to anybody unless they're telling him what he wants to hear, and donny knew -- my cousin, donny, knew that the message he was sending was something that donald would not want to hear. and also, he's the last person in the world donald would want to hear from in that context. so partially it was because donny knew it was the wrong message, and secondly, he's a coward and did not want to confront his father. >> and by the way, as you know, it was not just your cousin that texted mark meadows on january 6th. it was also revealed that the fox news host -- multiple of them -- sent these texts pushing donald trump to try to calm the violence, and after their text messages were read aloud this week by congresswoman liz cheney, instead of addressing the substance, sean hannity and laura ingraham went after the messenger. take a listen to what they said. >> our text messages -- liz, release yours. >> i actually don't -- i actually don't care to read any of their text messages, because they're all so aggressively boring. they're the most boring people -- they're so predictable. it's like, hang a piece of meat and they just grab it. >> okay, so after revealing that they acknowledged on the 6th how bad things were, despite continuing to downplay the violence, what does this new reaction say about them and their responsibility to their viewers? >> i think it says that they feel absolutely no responsibility to their viewers, first of all. and second, it's as if they have decided what side they're on. they have decided that they are with the insurrectionists, that they are perfectly willing to put the future of american democracy at risk, because they think it will give them more power. i'm not really sure what the end game is for them, but they don't care what's at stake here. it also suggests that they are never going to acknowledge anything. and i think that's the strategy here, particularly with the right-wing media. they don't apologize, they don't correct themselves. they just engage in aggressive revisionist history, so their viewers never get the truth. and that's kind of terrifying. >> but, according to the public religion research institute, only a sliver of republicans who trust and tune into fox news and other far-right sources say that donald trump holds a lot of the blame for the riot. do you think that the text revelations -- i mean, they're proof, right, a snapshot of proof there of the mind-set. will that change any minds of fox news viewers? >> i'm afraid it won't. and alex, you know this as well or better than most people, the news is so silent now. the ways in which people get information are so cut off and isolated that i think there's a really good chance that people who watch fox news or oan or news max exclusively won't ever get the facts. i think the fact that the committee is televising its hearings is extraordinarily important. but again, i think a significant number of americans won't ever get that information, and i think fox, and people like hannity and ingra hamm are counting on that. >> yeah. so if you look at the headlines overall, mary, there is a lot of concern out there that donald trump is planning a 2024 coup or in fact systemically laying the groundwork to steal the 2024 election at this point. on a scale of one to ten in your mind, how concerning, how legitimate are these concerns for you? do you think your uncle is going to run? >> well, as far as my concerns, my concerns are definitely at a ten. >> wow. >> partially because i don't think they're planning to -- they're not just planning for a 2024 coup, they've never stopped to 2020 coup or the 2021 coup. this is all of a piece. this is -- the groundwork has been laid. and they're just continuing to work it at the levels of state legislatures, et cetera. so i don't know that there's any turning back here, unless some very high-level people begin to be held accountable. and whether or not donald will are up, if he's given the opportunity to, of course he will. you know, he needs the powers and protections of the oval office to get him out of the considerable trouble he could potentially be in the next two to three years. the real question, though, is why is being allowed to run if indeed he does? >> that is a question i think you want to ask the head of the rnc and other different major influential republican organizations. those questions will be asked. real quickly, my last one to you, what's your podcast all about? "the mary trump show." i'm excited for you. >> thank you, alex, i'm really excited about it, too. i'm having so much fun. i have had two episodes so far. and basically, it gives me the opportunity to do a really deep dive into the most important issues that are happening over the course of a week and i get to talk to some brilliant people who teach me stuff that i certainly didn't know. so it's a great opportunity, i think. and at this point, with 2022 coming up and 2024 elections coming up, it's all hands on deck. so any medium i can get into to help move the conversation along, the better. so i'm really grateful. >> okay. well, i'm glad your voice is out there, as well. both with your podcast and on our broadcast, too. thank you so much, mary trump. have a good one. the concern about omicron become a crisis in london. the steps being taken there as well as the rest of europe, next. plp (burke) with farmers auto multi-policy discount, the more policies you have with us, the more you could save on your auto insurance.
