house, too, where we think we are within a couple minutes of seeing president biden talking on a different topic, world aids day. we also have other breaking news in from michigan. the sheriff is set to speak at that microphone any minute on the deadly school shooting at oxford high school. we learned two the suspected shooter is, what he is charged with, and we have the devastating news that a fourth student has died. we'll take you there. there's also everything going down at the supreme court. as you just heard, on the future of abortion rights. the court showing signals it may uphold mississippi's 15 week ban, and maybe even overturn roe. we're live with one of the members of the legal teams challenging mississippi's law. i'm hallie jackson in washington. we're starting with the news breaking on covid. omicron officially here in the u.s. there had been the expectation from some experts that, yes, omicron, this new covid variant, was probably already here. now we know for sure. we know it is in california. i want to play the announcement from the chief medical adviser to the president, dr. anthony fauci. >> this is the first confirmed case of covid-19 caused by the omicron variant detected in the united states. we knew that it was just a matter of time before the first case of omicron would be detected in the united states. >> nbc's erin mclaughlin is in los angeles. also with us, dr. torres, medical correspondent. i want to be transparent with both of you and our viewers. we're juggling a lot of live events. we expect to see president biden. we'll take that live. we expect to hear the sheriff's news conference from michigan. we will take that live if we can as well. erin, i want to start with you. as we wait for one of these events to happen now, we just heard from the california governor. no real news other than what we already knew, which is that this person had tested positive for this variant. they had returned to california from south africa just a couple weeks ago, right? >> reporter: that's right. they returned to san francisco from south africa in late november. upon their return, this individual, who has not been so far named by authorities, developed what was called mild symptoms. from there, got tested and, obviously, the fact that this individual traveled from south africa around this time would have raised red flags with officials. authorities there at the university of california, san francisco, confirming overnight sequencing within a matter of hours that the individual was infected with the omicron variant. still testing positive, according to authorities. the individual was fully vaccinated according to health officials there in san francisco by moderna, though not boosted. they have tested the closest contacts to this individual. the tests, so far, coming up negative. authorities in san francisco saying, at this point, they have no plans to change any health orders or impose any new restrictions as a result of this confirmation. hallie? >> dr. torres, we heard dr. fauci say, so far, the close contacts to this person have tested negative, as erin knows as well. are you reading anything into that? can we learn anything about transmissibility in this instance from that, or is it just too early or not enough day data to say? >> it is too early to understand what is going on here, and i don't think we can read much into it. number one, we don't know about the transmissibility. there are hints it could be more transmissible, but those are hints. they haven't really set anything firm. haven't got firm information. on top of that, he was fully vaccinated, had not gotten his booster shot. he also had mild symptoms. probably because of the vaccines. so those mild symptoms means he probably didn't have the high viral load and wasn't able to spread it to other people quite as readily. so i think that is teaching us how important these vaccines are. that was one thing that dr. fauci emphasized over and over again. get vaccinated. you're vaccinated, get the booster if you're eligible. that's what you need to protect you from this virus. >> it's such an important point, right? i think your explanation for folks of how this makes an impact is important. because we know the booster, at least not right now as far as moderna or j&j or pfizer, they're not specifically tweaked for the omicron variant, at least not yet. we know some of these companies are working on that. still, that does give you some level of protection from any variant, right? >> it does give us the level of protection. if you remember going back over a year ago, we were hoping for 50% effectiveness against the virus in the vaccine. we got to the high 90s and were happy with that. when the delta variant came along, the effectiveness dropped but it still protected against serious illness, hospitalizations, and death. that's what we think will happen here. once you get the booster, which is what dr. fauci explained, you go from an antibody load that's down here to one that is 30 to 40-fold higher. it can protect you with spillover effect. it can protect you from the variant. we can't constantly chase the variants around. we've already had multiple variants in the year and a half we've had the pandemic. it's one of those things that it is going to be hard to play catchup. having the protection from the vaccines and the booster can give you the protection you need now to protect yourself, along with, of course, the face masking, social distancing, ventilation, the things we've been doing the last two years. >> i wonder if you found it interesting to hear this person, this patient, is experiencing mild symptoms, which is obviously a good thing. that tracks with what we heard anecdotally, and i want to stress, anecdotal tyanecdotally doctors in south africa, which is different from the delta variant, right? >> it is different than what we thought about the delta variant. symptoms seem to be different as well. with the delta variant, we typically hear about the loss of sense of smell or taste, the cough, the respiratory issues that are going on. here with this one, what we have heard, again, these are anecdotal, limited numbers, we heard of milder symptoms. we heard of people talking about fatigue, bodyaches, and headaches, not the same thing. it can tell us this virus variant is changing a little bit in the way it attacks us. i don't want to say it is going to give us hope at this point because the numbers aren't high enough yet. but if this keeps multiplying and we see the same thing, that can tell us the variant is changing to a certain extent, and it might be more infectious but not as dangerous. we don't know, and that's why we need to protect ourselves and those around us as best we can. that means get vaccinated. >> dr. john torres, thank you so much for being with us. you'll be standing by this hour in case we get more developments. i want to thank erin mclaughlin, as well. again, we are watching the white house for any news out of president biden. when he speaks any minute from now. we're also following big developments out of michigan after the shooting at oxford high school that broke just about 24 hours ago, as we were on the air over in michigan. you're looking at the room where we're set to hear another update in a moment here. the suspected shooter expected to be arraigned on charges soon. the oakland county prosecutor is sharing new details about this person. >> we are charging this individual with one count of terrorism causing death. four counts of first degree murder. seven counts of assault with intent to murder. and 12 counts of possession of a firearm and the commission of a felony. >> we've also just learned a fourth student has died. seven other people were hurt in the shooting. nbc's shaquille brewster is with us in pontiac, michigan. news on multiple fronts. we expect to hear more from the sheriff. we showed the microphone where we expect to hear from officials. what are the outstanding questions that you have that we hope to be answered here? >> reporter: really, it is what more they have in this investigation. we know the sheriff earlier today, he knocked down some rumors that they had a heads-up, that there was some reporting on this shooting, at least reports that they got ahead of the shooting. he said that is not true. he said early last month, they did get some threats, but it wasn't directed at the school. the school wasn't even in this state. so we expect to hear more from him and the latest in this investigation. we do know that the suspect, that 15-year-old sophomore at the high school that is accused of opening fire, killing those four people, sending another eight to the hospital, we do know he is still in custody at this point. you mentioned those charges announced by the prosecutor in the past hour. that terrorism charge. she says that reflects the magnitude and scale of the crime. the students that were ducking in classrooms, that were running, afraid to open the door for members of law enforcement that were trying to rescue them. the four counts of first degree murder, reflecting the four people who were killed in this shooting. the seven counts of assault with intent to murder. the seven other people who were hospitalized and who are -- some, we know, six are still in the hospital right now. then the 12 counts of possession of a firearm and the commission of a felony, all of those counts just announced in the past couple of minutes. now, one other note we heard from the prosecutor is that she is also considering charges against his parent. we know that gun, that was juiced in the shooting. it was purchased just last friday. several days ago, several days before the shooting. the prosecutor made a big point to say that responsible gun ownership needs to be enforced, needs to be in focus here. that could be something that's coming down the line. but they are charging this 15-year-old sophomore as an adult. for now, he will be in custody for the foreseeable future. his arraignment will happen later this afternoon. >> talk more about something we heard from an update in the last, i would say, hour, hour and change, about the idea there may have been some planning around this. >> reporter: yeah. you heard from the prosecutor saying that premeditated. it was not an impulsive shooting. one student was in the bathroom of -- who was in the bathroom of that school who heard the gunman leaving the bathroom and walked out and saw the bodies. the idea is that they're saying this is something that was premedicated, not something that was spur of the moment kind of thing. this is all going to be part of the investigation. you know, up until this point, police have not been able to question this suspect because he is a minor. his parents did not give them permission to ask any questions of him. his parents suggested that he ask for an attorney. so he has not been cooperating. they want to know the motive. they want to know how he got that gun into the school. the school doesn't have metal detecters, but they want to know how he got possession of the gun, how he got it into the school, and they want to learn more about why he did it. if there is any motive. one question that was interesting that we didn't hear the prosecutor answer, that she avoided, was whether or not any of the victims were targeted. she said that is under investigation at this point, and that is likely something we'll hear about, if not in the days to come, definitely in the foreseeable future. >> shaq brewster outside, of course, the sheriff's office in oakland county, thank you. as we mentioned, we are waiting for the news conference where perhaps some of the questions that shaq laid out might be answered by the sheriff and his team there. we thought that was going to start about 11 minutes ago. we'll take you there live when it begins. we'll also take you live to the white house. president biden is set to speak any minute here at this event. you see the president there on world aids day. we will see if he makes any comments about the latest covid news that has developed late this afternoon. we'll be right back after this break. break. scaper larry and his trusty crew... were delayed when the new kid totaled his truck. timber... fortunately, they were covered by progressive, so it was a happy ending... for almost everyone. do you struggle with occasional nerve aches so it was a happy ending... in your hands or feet? charged four counts of first degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to do murder, and 12 counts of felony firearm. our detectives right now are in the car on the way to district court 523 for a swear to to the facts and allegations contained in these warrants. and after those are sworn to, we anticipate that a video arraignment direct to the court will occur. we are asking and joining the prosecutor to ask the judge that this individual be transferred to the oakland county jail from children's village. we hope that the judge rules on that as well. i'd like to update you on some of the information. this is still evolevolving, rig? it's a crime scene. we still have a ton of interviews the do, video to review, documents to review, search warrants that have been completed that have to be examined in terms of content and items that were seized. sometimes things evolve. when i said last night that he had seven rounds left, he actually had 18. seven were in his pocket that were loose. so he had additional rounds in an actual magazine. excuse me. so he had a total of 18 live rounds left. we have recovered 30 spent shell casings at this point by processing the scene, meaning he fired more than 30 shots. more to the point, again, i think it highlights the fact that with this much ammunition still with him, 18 live rounds, the quick actions of the school and the lockdown, as well as the departme deputies getting in and going to the sound, going to the danger, saved lives. that doesn't minimize the loss or the tragedy, but it is important that we continue to look for ways to prevent these, and if they ever tragically happen, how we can mitigate and reduce that tragedy. the suspect, we believe at this point, now had three 15-round magazines. two were initially recovered by investigators. after a thorough forensic examination of the crime scene, which went until 5:30 this morning, another magazine was recovered. as i mentioned, that crime scene was searched and processed until 5:30 this morning and has now been turned back to oakland -- excuse me -- oxford schools. we're coordinating counseling and therapist efforts with care house to assist all oxford community schools. we also have an offer for a crisis team from the fbi, and we're grateful for that assistance. i would remind and encourage anyone, whether they were there or feel traumatized by the event, it is strength to seek help, not weakness. that trauma affects people in dramatic and sad ways. and asking people for help, seeking a therapist or a counselor or a chaplain is an important step to process such a tragedy. also, i want to clear up some of the incorrect information that keeps circulating. social media keeps ginning up a great deal of false information. a video was disseminated rather widely that showed the students in a classroom and depicted someone knocking on the door, and pretty much the allegation was that that was the suspect. we've now been able to determine that was not the suspect. excuse me. more than likely, it was one of our plain clothes detectives, and he may have been talking, bro, in a conversational manner to try to bring them down from the crisis, to say, come on, bro, let's get out of the classroom. let's get you outside. that kind of comment. the suspect we have now confirmed by analyzing all of the video from the time it began until the time we took him into custody never knocked on a door. so the other thing that we are seeing, that we have heard on social media, was that, again, we were notified about this threat in advance. false. the threat that we were notified in advance was one from november 11th that, actually, we did investigate. it was determined to be from georgia, not oakland county, and had no relationship to oxford schools and was cleared as such. that is continuing to be cross-populated to this event. it has nothing to do with this event. so people are posting, "i called the sheriff's office about a threat." it was a different set of circumstances that had nothing to do with this individual or the facts at hand. there were two events that happened fairly close proximity in timelines and the locations to oxford, both of them had nothing to do with this. we received no information about this individual prior to the shooting. we also were told that the school had some information or some contact with the individual. we had no information from the schools, but we have since learned the schools did have contact with the student the day before and the day of the shooting for behavior in the classroom that they felt was concerning. in fact, the parents were brought in the morning of the shooting and had a face-to-face meeting with the school. the content of that meeting, obviously, is part of the investigation, but we did not learn of that meeting, nor of the content of that meeting, until after the shooting and during this investigation. so, please, i remind everyone, be weary of social media and what's spread. because it's hurtful to the community. it's hurtful to the victims. it spreads false, sad misinformation. if anyone has information or believes they know something about this case, or, frankly, any case, or any potential threat anywhere in oakland county, please call our phone line that we've given out before at 248-858-4911. or you can email us at ocso -- oakland county sheriff's office -- ocso@oakgov.com. we accept anonymous tips. i'll try to answer questions if it doesn't get too deeply into the evidence because we're, right now, at the baton point where we're passing the baton from investigation and prosecution. we don't want to say anything that may jeopardize that furtherance of the case. okay. secondly, one of the victim's families has been getting a great deal of contact from the media. they don't want to talk to the media. they're feeling bombarded in this unbelievable moment of pain. so we would ask you to leave the family members that lost loved ones alone. and -- the father described it as wolves at the door. they're dealing with the loss of a child. let's not victimize them again, please. >> the victim that passed today, multiple ages came back? >> suspect was at school and did not leave. was brought into a meeting and then went back into the school area. >> more about the nature of the concerning behavior? was it a threat? was it violent behavior? >> i can't get into that. again, we're at the evidentiary handoff point. >> is that information that should have been relayed to the school resource officer? >> we prefer to error on the side of too much rather than too little. i can't really go much beyond that. we would rather, as i said yesterday, check out a thousand nothings than miss one real deal. >> is that going to be investigated? is the school going to potentially answer questions? >> it is part of the investigation. that's where we learned about it. >> [ inaudible question ]. >> yes. >> the parents left, and he thereabouts, first call came in or was dispatched. >> he went to the bathroom, loaded the gun in the bathroom before walking out to shoot, can you confirm that? >> i can tell you he came out of the bathroom with the firearm and began shooting. i can't tell you if he loaded it in there. >> any updates on a motive just yet, sheriff? >> no. we obviously are not communicating with the suspect, so we can't get that from him. we're working items we have seized, as i talked about, documents, papers, phones, evidentiary value items to see if there's something that would lead to us understanding what would motivate him. again, there is nothing that he could have faced that would warrant senseless, absolutely brutal violence on other kids. and i have also asked the school if they had any records of him being bullied. the coordinator of anti-bullying programs had no information that he'd been bulied by anyone. >> prosecutor talked about premeditation but was not able to clarify whether it was premeditation. assuming it goes there, with the intent to kill, was it random targets or is there information they were target snd. >> we have no indication that these students were specifically targeted. based on what i've seen, i don't think that's the case. >> is there discipline that was discussed or decided in that meeting? >> i really don't want to get into the specifics of that meeting because now it is part of the investigation. but i wanted to be transparent, that we learned that a meeting had occurred, and we did not know about that until after the shooting. >> sheriff, was he ever expelled from school? >> no. prior to those two meetings, there was no contact and nothing in his file by either concerning behavior or discipline. >> how has the interaction been with the parents? >> with the parents of the child? >> of the -- >> yeah. well, they've apparently hired an attorney, so we're not talking to the child or the parents. >> [ inaudible question ]. >> yeah, i really don't want to get into ultimately what will be disclosed at trial. and what we recover in terms of documented evidence. >> with social media, you addressed some of the rumors about a countdown being displayed on a social media account? >> that's the first i've heard of it right now. again, there's so much out on social media that we've spent a lot of time investigating and finding there was nothing to it and debunking it. it is causing us a great deal of resources and causing the v victims more harm and more hurt. >> is there any indication the suspect had mental health conditions? >> we have no information about that. >> sheriff, what was the proximity to the victims? was he within 50 feet, walking down the hall? >> very close. >> very close opposed to -- >> very close. very close. >> sheriff, i know how it happened within a five-minute span, but is there a timeline you can give us as far as where the shooting started and the avenue he took? >> again, i don't want to get too awfully specific into the actual elements. he came out of the bathroom, began shooting. moved through hallways and back through hallways and was apprehended in the hallway. never went into a room. he was in the hallway the whole time. >> i have one more question. did he ever spend any time in a mental facility at all? do you know that? >> not that i'm aware of. >> are you aware of the shooter going to a gun range in the days before the event to train with the weapon? >> we're told by different people that he had -- there's some social media posts that allege that. we have not had the ability to verify it at this point. if there was a range or if that happened, that's, again -- i mean, understand the scope of this. the school has almost 1,800 students. so everybody that was in school that day we have to contact to see if they saw, heard, or knew anything. we have to review every bit of video footage from all of the cameras in that building, which there is an extensive camera system thanks to the proactive work of oxford schools. i'll also say on the proactive side, we've worked with oxford schools. our liaison taught them a.l.i.c.e. that saved lives. also going through the scene and seeing it in a very non-rushed fashion, those practices were used and they saved lives. desks were upturned. doors were barricaded. doors were actually hit by gunfire and so were barricades, but the doors were safe. that behavior, that training, those protocols saved lives. >> when was the last time there was a training at that school? was it for teachers or -- >> i believe it was just prior to covid, maybe 2 '18. >> you talked at length last night, today, about the training -- >> '18 or '19, somewhere in there. >> you talked about the kids going through drills, but no mention about gun legislation, maybe trying to do things upstream to prevent these types of occurrences. the prosecutor talked about it half hour ago. do you have anything to share in your view in regard to whether that -- >> yeah, i mean, i think i have the feeling a lot of law enforcement has. we have a whole lot of gun laws that are meant to hold criminals accountable when they commit a crime, when they use a gun, carry a gun illegally, and they're not utilized today. that's one of our constant concerns around the country. i'm head of government affairs for major county sheriffs of america, and we see this across the nation. we catch somebody illegally with a gun, and it's pled down to a misdemeanor. they're out. we've had people, you know, that have been charged with gun crimes three, four times. i believe the surest way to get a handle on holding people accountable when they're doing things illegally with a gun is to punish them. that's not happening in many communities across america today. there is a nix background check. when you purchase a firearm that requires you to go through this, there is a huge number of people that are prohibited from buying that firearm that are caught by the system that are never prosecuted for trying. we have gun laws in place. we're not holding people accountable. we have felony firearm in michigan. i'd like to see anybody that's caught illegally possessing and using a firearm in a criminal manner should get felony firearm and do hard time. if we're going to hold people accountable, let's hold the criminals accountable. >> is it the father's history that should have been [ inaudible ]? >> not that i'm aware of. >> how frustrating is it? you mentioned you've been trying to talk to the suspect and his parents, telling them not to talk. how frustrating is that for you and your deputies and investigators? >> i believe, regardless of what the parents or the individual suspect does, our investigators are well on a path to create a very, very good case to hand the baton to the prosecutor. >> [ inaudible question ]. did the initial victims even know what was going on when they were shot? the reason i'm asking, i'm a parent with kids in school. >> sure. >> i know how kids walk through the hallway. you know, keep your eyes open. be careful. kids walking next to you or behind you, you don't know the intention. there's not a lot you can do. did the initial victims who were shot, did they actually know what the heck was going on when it happened? >> i would have to say no. >> sheriff, we're told there was a female retired deputy helping out at the school. any more information on who she is and how she was able to help out? >> their private security is employed by the school district, in addition to us having a school resource officer that covers oxford schools. i know some of them were there yesterday. i'm not sure all the specific ones. so we really don't want to get into identifying personnel at this point, but there were private security, people employed by the school, and i know at least one or two were there yesterday. >> sheriff, the prosecutor said -- i'm sorry -- she said it's been considered or looked into, but from where you sit with the evidence you've found, do you see criminal negligence on behalf of the parents? >> i think that would have to be a tbd, to be determined, as the investigation unfolds. we present it to the prosecutor, and she'll make the decision. >> sheriff, how did the gun get inside the building? >> you know, speculative, obviously, but my guess is he carried it in, either in his backpack or his waist. >> sheriff, can you -- and i apologize for the repetitive question. can you explain again the meeting of that morning and the day before, the meeting with his parents about his behavior? >> the day before, it was a meeting with school personnel about some concerning behavior. the meeting the day of was with school personnel and parents. >> about the same issue? >> about a different issue. >> what was that issue the day of? >> i really can't go into the specific issues on either day. two different meetings happened. >> can you give us any insight into his mental state? there was obviously -- was there is -- is there a suicide watch? >> any time there is somebody with an active participating role in a tragedy like this, they're put on suicide watch just to ensure that nothing happens. so that's kind of standard operating procedure. absolutely, if he gets transferred to the oakland county jail, that will happen. >> there's been a number of copycat threats toward the county today. >> sadly. >> agents are busy, i assume. taxing your resources? >> spot on, ross, yeah. there's -- some weird anomaly. every time something like this happens in the country, there's a whole bunch of copycat threats and texts and pictures, and it really burdens law enforcement all across the nation. we're actually in schools today investigating what we think are part of that incredibly disturbing trend. that's -- again, it raises the level of anxiety of parents, students, and teachers in schools that had nothing to do with this individual incident but are now feeling very much anxious and tied to it. that's how it broadens this whole anxiety and depression that many parents and students are feeling. it is incredibly disturbing. when those kids, who are whoever we find out call in or do these texts, false threats, you know, as you've seen us in the past, we attempt to get charges on them. even if it is not a credible threat, the mere threat is a crime. if you make a threat, we're going to seek charges. >> apologies or the redck den si -- redundancy. no evidence? >> i asked the school district. they had no information in any of their records he had been bullied, and we have had no information brought to our attention from any other source that he had been bullied. >> sheriff, the prosecutor said [ inaudible ]. do you know if the fbi was aware of any of this prior to -- >> at this point, i am not aware any law enforcement agency had him or the school on their radar for this particular incident at all. >> for this particular incident. what about -- [ inaudible ]? >> any incident involving him. he wasn't on any law enforcement radar that i'm aware of, certainly not ours. we had no communication about him or about anything that was pending. i haven't heard from any law enforcement agency that they did. >> [ inaudible question ]. >> apparently, he have interested in games. i can't really comment on what those were at this point. obviously, that's something that will be looked at as well. >> sheriff, is the belief he took the gun illegally or given the gun illegally? >> part of the investigation. in any event, he had the gun illegally. took the gun illegally into a school. used the gun in an illegal and murderous fashion. so we've got a whole bunch of charges already regardless of how he came into possession of it. >> any clarity you can give on his familiarity with weapons, perhaps gun range use, et cetera, in terms of his background and familiarity with guns? >> i don't know much beyond what we saw in evidence in the school, and that will be part of the investigation, obviously. with this particular weapon, it's our understanding it was purchased four days ago. this particular weapon, probably not a huge amount of familiarity with. >> but over the years, other pep weapons -- >> that's part of the investigation. >> what's your perspective on the terrorism charge, the impact of that message? >> i agree 100%. if you weren't hit by a bullet, doesn't mean you weren't terrorized that day and won't have nightmares about it the rest of your life. whether you're a parent, a teacher, or a student in that class. you know, going through that building in the wee hours of this morning, looking at the disarray in the classrooms and the backpacks strewn across the floor, that had to have been an absolutely terrorizing moment in anyone's life. i don't care if you're an adult or a child. >> how much more time do you expect for processing at the school itself? are you pretty much done? >> we're pretty much wrapped up with the physical processing in the school. not necessarily the evidence that we obtained from it. >> a search warrant executed at the parents' house. is there additional property you're looking at requiring additional searches? >> we seized property at the house, and our detectives are going through it. i think i mentioned this before. we have a lot of bundles here we're fortunate to have under our own roof. we have our own crime lab, so they're processing things as it relates to the scene and items that were seized there. we have computer crimes looking at any kind of digital evidence, including his phone. you know, we have detectives looking at any potential documents or other things that may contain information or things relative to, you charge of the case and relayed to the prosecutor. >> do you have any detail on what was seized or the volume of material seized? >> i can't get into the details of what was seized. i can tell you we have a va voluminous amount of things to go through. >> i apologize if you answered this previously. your investigators, will they have a follow-up conversation with the school in regards to why you guys were not informed about that meeting? >> certainly, our investigators will be and are in close contact with that school, and we're in close contact with all schools in oakland county. we encourage all schools, public or private, houses of worship, businesses, anyone that has any concerning behavior, they should report it. allow law enforcement the opportunity to make the situation safe. to say there is nothing to it, or we need to look deeper. that's what we want to do. it's not a burden. we encourage people, wherever they are, if they're concerned about something, let us know. let your local police know.cern that constitute threats? >> i don't want to get too awfully into what was concerning because then i get into the actual content. but, you know, it's one of those things. if someone looks at it and you go, oh, that doesn't seem right, whether it is threatening or disturbing or maybe they're worried about, you know, someone being bullied or suicidal. we have, obviously, a huge problem in america with suicide, especially teens. if they see something that may cross into any of those realms, it needs to be shared. so we can figure it out. a, if it is a threat to anyone else or themselves, and, b, where to get help. >> have they indicated why they didn't share the concern beg behavior with your office? >> that's all part of our discussion with them. >> sheriff, did you know about the meeting with the school and the parents that morning? >> did who know? >> did the -- i'm sorry. did he know he was going to be meeting with school officials and his parents? >> he was brought into the meeting, and his parents were called. >> i'm asking because did he ever leave the school after that meeting? >> no. >> he was already in school. >> still, again, it is still a moving -- we believe it was. i can't definitively say 100% it was, but we believe it was. because we've begun the process of tracking his movements. and saw at what point and where he came out with the weapon. >> thank you. >> sheriff, do you think [ inaudible ]? i don't even know something like that. a minor, like, gun taken away from the parents' home? >> i think the most important thing is to share information. because, i mean, for anything, whether what you're talking about or a different process, you have to share. you have to say, this seems concerning. can you look into it? with or without that, we would. say, hey, what's going on? what are you seeing? what are you hearing? what have you seen? try to determine where it is coming from and where it might lead. >> [ inaudible question ]. >> yes. >> as per the meeting in the morning with the parents, did the suspect go back to class or -- >> he was released back into the school from the meeting. >> do you have any video of where he retrieved the weapon from, like a locker or somewhere? >> again, the first time we saw the weapon actually in evidence was when he came out of the bathroom. so, you know, every other moment in time it wasn't observed. whether it was concealed on his person or in a backpack or hidden somewhere in the restroom, that is all part of the investigation. if we can determine. >> there's been discussion of metal detecters in schools and whether that would have prevented getting the weapon inside the building. >> the vast majority of schools in america do not have weapons or metal detectives. you know, that's a determination for each district about what kind of environment they want to be operating in. but, you know, i know for a fact, one of the last debriefs i got on a school shooter, he came in through a back door. you know, somebody was going out, and he came in, walked in with a firearm. began shooting. so, you know, there's, tragic addy, nothing foolproof in a world where you have people that want to hurt other people. but, again, the best preventive path that we've seen that has worked is to make sure everyone talks about something they've seen, heard, or witnessed, so it can get looked into. to put training and protocols in place. in fact, that situation that i just mentioned where somebody came in a door, that was a non-traditional door, they had radios as a school system all around the building. anyone in the school was empowered to put the school in a lockdown. so a groundskeeper or janitor, i can't remember his actual position, saw the person with the firearm go into the school and called it out on the radio. the school went into lockdown. they still had, i believe, one or two students killed, but everybody else was in lockdown. the police were able to get there before anymore perished. processes, training, communication, that's some of the best paths that we've seen in terms of success. >> sheriff, will you be releasing any video footage from the school? >> no. at this point, that would become a handoff to the prosecutor for evidence. recent update. the 14-year-old with the gunshot wound to the hand and jaw has been discharged. >> any update on the young girl described yesterday on a ventilator after a chest wound and surgery? >> she is off the ventilator. >> she's off the ventilator, but she's still critical? >> yeah. >> yeah. >> thank you. >> yeah. >> can you mention the time of the -- >> it's probably happening almost as we speak. >> right now. >> it'll be a video arraignment, so the detectives driving in person to the district court where he is going to swear to the warrant. then they're going to connect via video and arraign the suspect to that court. >> so we're straight, can you relay the names of the folks that are still hospitalized and -- >> no, we're not naming the victims that are hospitalized. i mean, even the ones that are deceased were sad to hear they've been negatively impacted. we hoped it would be uplifting and supportive rather than focusing on attention that they don't want. >> at any point in the video, did anyone try to disarm him or were people running from him? >> i don't -- nothing i saw tells me that. i'm not sure that we have any information on that front that has come to me. the part i saw, there was no attempt. but, obviously, when you have got somebody very close firing a weapon, that's not almost anybody's natural response, to go towards it, other than police and military. and that's with extensive training. anybody else? thank you. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> a thorough and a newsy press conference there from sheriff michael bouchard in michigan after the deadly high school shooting that happened yesterday afternoon at oxford high school. significant headlines coming out of this. primarily, the news, as we heard from sheriff bouchard the suspected shooter, a suspect who is expected to be arraigned at any moment had a meeting with officials at the school just days before, and then mere meeting where his parents were called to the school just hours before the student opened fire on his classmates. neither the student or his parents are cooperating. tbd determined whether or not there is criminal negligence on the part of the parents here. no indication that the suspect has been bullied and no indication that the victims were specifically targeted. you are seeing the four victims who were killed here. the sheriff was told the suspect was perhaps at a gun range in the days prior. we know this teen came out the bathroom with a weapon, walked the hallways and fired more than 30 round at a very close range. shaq brewster joins us a. lot of questions around what the sheriff described as concerning behavior from this suspected shooter the day before and the morning of this shooting. >> that's right, hallie. you just went through the big headline, this suspect had a meeting with school officials and his parents hours before he opened fire. -- he is alleged to have open fire over 24 hours ago at this point. one thing that struck me going through that press conference is the idea how much worse this could have been, the idea that he had, according to the sheriff, three 15-round magazines on him, that he had plenty more ammunition that was unspent that was not used at that point. and you heard the praise there. this is something we not only heard from the sheriff at this point but we have heard from students who were inside that school, also heard from the held staff, the preparation, the praise and idea they went on lockdown almost immediately. they helped save some lives. i think the arraignment is beginning. >> we will go live into the courtroom where the video arraign member of the 15-year-old suspect is beginning. >> thank you, pleas raise your right hand. do you swear or affirm the information you are about to provide the court will be truthful and accurate to the best of your ability, so help you god? >> i do, your honor. >> thank you. what information do you have that would lead the court that a kpant warrant should be you are issued against ethan robert crumbly. >> on >> they are listed in the complaint and warrant. at this stage i would ask him to name those individuals so that the swear to is consistent. >> therefore, if you could go through each one one by one starting with -- starting actually with count one, which indicates the terrorism causing death. >> okay. do you have a copy of the complaint and warrant? >> i do, your honor. >> okay. count one, did knowingly wonderfully tributely and with premeditation commit murder in the first degree when intending to initem late a civilian population, to with it the oxford high school communities and caused
