supported by the caucus. >> i don't think there's a doubt we can do it. people need to be open to compromise. and i think if we compromise like we did in the bipartisan infrastructure bill that argued and fought and came to a bill that would work i think it's the same thing within the 50 democrats, too. >> this bill is the biggest cost cutting family for working class and american families in decades this country and go at persistent costs for the american people. >> i will talk to congresswoman alma adams. plus suddenly on the front lines of a battle. librarians finding the once very quiet world turned upside down by the right wing movement to ban book just an iowa librarian felt she had to quit. all that and more on the breaking news with that missing chinese tennis player. olympics officials said they would talked to her. we want to begin with conservatives speaking out to defend the 18-year-old's acquittal in the fatal shooting of two men in kenosha, wisconsin, last year. take a listen to republican jim jordan on fox news. >> if this wasn't self defense tell me what self defense looks like. we know the facts. due process won. the second amendment won. this was a good day for the country that the jurors were willing to do this in the right way and follow the truth and the law. this is a win for america and our great system. >> jordan said it's a win for the system. an article said it's designed to protect white conservatives who kill and encouraging white vigilantes like rittenhouse to police all places by all means. we heard this from madison hawthorne in a tweet praising the verdict of the kyle rittenhouse trial. talk me through how you see this encouraging white vigilantes. >> sure. thank you so much for having me, yasmin. the point of the piece to say from the moment kyle rittenhouse emerged in the public eye he was granted deference. he was welcomed by the police arriving. after he killed people at the protest the trump administration deferred to the excuse saying he was defending property rights. when the trial began the judge declined to allow the prosecution to call kyle rittenhouse's victims victims and then ultimately the results, a court, a jury affirmed the conservative warped imagination which says that progressive spaces are vie lint place and need to be policed by the police or anyone willing to stand in their way. >> you talked about an acquittal in the making. the case had the makings of an acquittal before the trial began. he is a white teen who abides by white rules and people and seemed poised to insulate him from repercussions. what benefited kyle here in the trial not only from the jury to the judge's behavior? >> sure. we know that in the conservative imagination progressive spaces are violent and need to be policed and so that's why he was granted deference by the jury when they ruled in his favor and it encourages other people of rittenhouse's ilk to say i see these spaces as violent ones. i need to put myself in the position to defend whether property rights or the people who are there in place of the police whose job it is to protect these people and i'll stand in their stead and carry on the obligations that they have and dangerous going forward for all progressive spaces and i wanted to say that a lot of people took exception to the fact i made this racial. they said i made this racial. despite the fact the victims are white and the suspect in this case is white we know there's a vast history of white allies to pro black causes being targeted with scorn and violence by other white people and that i think is a discouragement is that other people who might want to stand in lockstep with black and brown people will be discouraged because they don't want to walk into the violence that kyle rittenhouse's victims did. >> stand by. i want to bring in erin haynes. also rick wilson. erin, i just want you to point out to us what the big oes irses were with this trial. was it the justice system? the growing white conservative arm of the country right now? is it both? what is it? >> yeah. i think that on the other side of the verdict what you have is a lot of americans wondering what are the rules and to who will they apply? he is right that race was absolutely a part of this even though the race of everyone involved in the case is white. there is a question about the second amendment. who's allowed to stand their ground? even you have to think about the climate in which the shootings happened in kenosha with kyle rittenhouse opening fire at this protest. these were people gathering to protest police treatment of communities of color by police. right? these protests part of happening in cities i cross the country last summer. the overwhelming majority, a harvard study found they're peaceful and the narrative in conservative media is that they're rife with violence and a need for people like kyle rittenhouse to show up in cities where they were not from armed to do what they felt that law enforcement was not in that case and encouraged by the then commander in chief. i think now on the other side of the verdict the activists that i hear from questioning what kind of message this sends to folks as people may continue to try to peacefully protest. what can they expect to the extent of violence and looting and also folks that came to these protests not interest in the peaceful protest aspect but there to cause trouble and some of those people were folks like kyle rittenhouse. >> let's read for you from "boston globe" op-ed. on the benefit of boyhood. white boyhood is an armor that inspired judge schroeder to ban prosecutors from tying rittenhouse to the proud boy just a loophole allowed him to toss a weapons charge before closing arguments began. legally armed black folk don't get this grace. >> yeah. and even black folk who are not armed, right, but you think about 12-year-old tamir rice with a toy gun without a benefit of the doubt is dead. you think about breonna taylor in her castle, her home, gunned down by police. filando castill in minnesota who lost his life after trying -- even after identifying himself as a lawful gun owner. there does seem to be -- there's a double standard in this country with race, when it comes to gun ownership, who is allowed to be a vigilante, who's allowed -- who's seen as a victim. right? who's allowed to be called a victim. race is absolutely at the center of this and that's why the reckoning that happened last summer is very much still underway on both sides in this country. >> there's also another part of this conversation whereas is this verdict going to empower other right wing vigilantes? seems like it has, empowering folks like the proud boys attached to january 6. actually the proud boys came to warnd on january 6, 2021, to patrol the perimeter of the places of the crowds to defend vulnerable demonstrators from attacks against antifa. that was zachary rails' defense attorney. a member of the proud boys. it is already happening, rick. it seems like we're not hearing rick. we are having an issue with the audio. rick, we got you? still not hearing you. he may have to unmute the audio. >> i think i'm back. sorry. >> go ahead. >> i think this speaks to a cultural moment in this country right now where this case is -- be honest. badly prosecuted. >> yeah. >> the parent taking the minor to a protest with an ar-15. guys, i'm a conservative. a hunter, a shooter. i have firearms. i would never take my 17-year-old kid across state lines to a protest saying have an ar-15. this is a cultural moment lost in the shuffle and what we see emerging in the spectrum of proud boys and 3 percenters and the rest of the mutant parade that would like to push the window on what kind of political discourse is allowed and that political discourse if it is armed go all the way is what they say. they want it to escalate to confrontation. there's a part that's as radical nationalism to escalate it. i think that cultural moment is something to pay attention to. he's become a hero on the right. will be an intern in congress if matt gaetz has his way. all these things that these people have tried to turn this 17-year-old kid into this national cultural figure and it is very much a sort of an authoritarian playbook of find heroes for the cause and you transform them no matter what they have done and what this kid will be. the onion captured it perfect. appearing at the next 50 cpacs. it is important not to misunderstand how quickly the right will exploit a moment like this for their own political benefit. >> there is the worry that if kyle rittenhouse gets off so will i. next time january 6 happens you will see proud boys out there discharging the firearms and if they kill someone they will claim self defense. >> by the grace of god on january 16 we didn't have people show up tooled up and ready to shoot people. there were still firearms in the crowd and didn't use them and should be grateful as a country for that and on a thin, icy edge and should not rely on the fact to count on -- look. kyle rittenhouse was a 17-year-old boy. 17-year-old boys have poor impulse control as a general rule. you will have a lot of young guys out there with firearms and many of whom with no experience and training but this is now a part of the cultural signifiers of the movement so they'll do that and important to do the counter factual. what if blm protesters showed up carrying ar-15s? we would have a much different reaction. >> a point i made on the call this morning. last to you. looking ahead to the ahmaud arbery trial. are you expecting the same kind of outcome here or do you think we'll see something different, as you saw the adjustment of the laws in georgia following the killing of ahmaud arbery, laws based off of slavery? >> sure. i'm expecting a different outcome in this case. i have written what i think is the set of justifications and i think in the ahmaud arbery case the facts of the matter are just so blatant that for the defense to emerge victorious requires much more of intellectual gymnastics than it required the jury in the rittenhouse case. >> i got to say there's something chilling that sticks with me thinking back to january 6 and it was a member of the militia speaking to me saying to me if they come for our guns it's over. and you look at what happened with kyle rittenhouse and you think, what's coming? what's down the road for us? thank you. thank you. thank you. all right. want to get to breaking news out of haiti. two people from the group of missionaries taken hostage is released. the group abducted in october. after visiting an orphanage. in a statement a spokesperson said the two hostages are in good spirits and cared for. no further details have been released as of yet. we'll bring you new developments as we get them. still ahead, candidate for texas governor will join me live. he's holding a campaign kickoff event in dallas right now. plus, pushing the build back better built through the senate. what are democrats willing to give up to make it happen?
