congresswoman ocasio cortez. two republicans, liz cheney and adam king zinger are the only republicans on the january 6th select committee. the overwhelmingly vast majority of house republicans are set to choose the embrace the violent. >> i think the republican conference need to do something about him. the republican leader, mr. mcconnell, needs to do something about him. why is he silent? when the man is threatening tocal another -- to till another member this body? and threatening the president of the united states of america. i ask your listeners one question. if yours truly had put out something like that do you think for one moment that my democratic colleagues would not take action against me they would do it. and they should do it. >> here's what the republican leadership did instead. mccarthy took to the house floor and described the send sewer motion as an abuse of power. politico reports, the post was posted by gosar's staff, not by him and that he deleted it when he found. gosar expressed regret and said he didn't mean to promote violence. this begs the question why gosar hasn't publicbly apologized to aoc, who regularly received death threats. gosar spoke at a white nationalist conference weeks after the capitol attack and he has peddled conspiracy theories about the 2017 white supremacist rally in charlottesville. s that all on top of falsely claiming that the 2020 election was stolen from one donald trump. through all this and in the weeks since the violent video was posted republicans refused to publicly condemn or punish gosar in any way n. a -- in a speech on the floor of the house floor congresswoman ocasio cortez slammed gosar. watch. >> it is a sad day in which a member who leads a political party in the united states of america cannot bring themselves to say that issuing a depiction of murdering a member of congress is wrong. and instead decides to venture off into a tangent about gas prices and inflation. what is so hard? what is so hard about saying that this is wrong? this is not about me. this is not about representative gosar. but this is about what we are willing to accept. now this nilism runs deep. and it conveys -- it conveys and betray as certain contempt for the meaning and importance of our work here. that what we do, so long as we claim that it is a joke, doesn't matter. that what we say here doesn't matter. that our actions every day as elected leaders in the united states of america doesn't matter. that this chamber and what happens in it doesn't matter. and i am here to rise to say that it does. our work here matters. our example matters. there is meaning in our service. and as leaders in this country, when we incite violence about depictions against our colleagues, that trickles down into violence in this country. >> u.s. house of representatives holding paul gosar accountable for his violent rhetoric amid an unprecedented threat environment if you would by disinformation and grievance is where we begin this hour. anna palmer is here, also joining us, "washington post" columnist eugene robinson, david jolly and here, and today we are joined by tim gosar, he's paul gosar's brother. he and several members of his family called for him to be expelled from the house. tim, i am going to start with you. i was watching you watch congresswoman ocasio cortez. i wanted to ask, what's going through your mind? her powerful, surk sinkt and spot on. good afternoon, nicolle. thank you for having pea on. but absolutely saying what matters and what is important and what is true and accurate. so i commend her and hope people are listening. >> how do you feel watching this censure vote for your brother? >> you know, it's almost surreal. but it's a process that we started quite a few years ago when we realized that we needed to step up and counter some of the dangerous, unhinged things that he was doing. so we came out in 2018 with the videos promoting and helping -- trying to help dr. barrel unseat him. and we moved forward with op eds and with these type of appearances. it is an yun going process. it is one that's disappointing that we are in this decision. it comes down to a choice, do you support somebody that's reckless, unhinged? or do you step up and work for the soul of our country and promote our democracy and the future for our kids? there is no choice given those two. >> tim, do you think your brother is dangerous? >> i do. yeah, i do. i don't try to choose my words loosely. i believe he's dangerous, unhinged and is reckless and is somebody that, as we've -- i have said before, needs to not only be censored, but he needs to be expelled. at the end of that process if he gets expelled and criminal charges are warranted, then criminal charges should be brought as well. >> can i ask you a question? what happened to him? >> well, what's interesting, nicolle, is that paul was picked on and bullied and harassed when he was growing up. so he understands the meaning of that anime video. he understands what he did when he organized one of the main organizers for the january 6th insurrection and attack on our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. so he understands all of that personally because he had to deal with it. so it's -- it's -- i hope our listeners realize that and realize just the magnitude of what he's done in the last year alone of promoting a lie about covid not being real and it would go away during the election, and the january 6th insurrection and him being a traitor because of that. and now this. and so i think it's past time that things have rolled in this direction, that he is hopefully going to be censured and hopefully, he is going to be expelled as well. >> i want to bring into our conversation anna palmer. and i understand liz cheney has just become the first republican to join the democrats in voting to censure paul gosar. i know that was expected. but is it dam breaking or is liz going to stand alone in the censure of paul gosar in the same way he stands alone on the 1/6 committee with one other republican, adam kinzinger? >> when you look at the numbers clearly she is standing alone. she made it public she was going to vote this way. so has adam kinzinger. i think there is only a handful of other potential republicans who would fall in line with democrats on this. saw some reporting earlier this afternoon, interesting comments that nancy mace, the republican made how she herself has been targeted. that's one of the members i am watching to see where she comes down on this. but the vast majority of the republicans in the house conference not only are they standing behind paul gosar, they seem to be outraged by the 1 republicans who voted for a bipartisan infrastructure package. look at a lot of our reporting over the last week or so. it has been stunning to me that there is more outrage for helping joe biden get part of his signature package done than it is to a member of congress who is actually putting out a violent video against another member from the house. it's something that i think five or ten years ago would be unthinkable. >> i want to -- anna's reporting is also reported this way in politico. i want to read this for you david jolly. the conversation that dominated tuesday's gop conference meeting wasn't about gosar's video but whether to booed moderate congressman cat go for backing the infrastructure bill. on tuesday night congresswoman marjorie taylor green told reporters if republicans don't punish republicans who voted for it she might support the move to remove him if the republicans take the house next year. is it too late to save the party from the racists and the lunatics that not only i will filtrated but are now trying to topple members from their committees bus. >> it is not only too late to save the party from the extremists, but too late to save the party from the failure of the leaders, kevin mccarthy and others who failed to stands up to this narrative in the caucus. shame used to mean something in politics. clearly in today's republican party it doesn't. i am not limiting that comment strictly to congressman gosar. i am speaking to the entire republican conference that refuses to act. i think it is important to understand that house democrats in this moment are using every tool they have. a censure is the highest form of admonition that they can implement with only a majority vote, 51% of the house. expulsion would prior republicans to agree to it. it requires a two-thirds vote. what you are seeing historically is a very significant condemnation of a member. i think what we saw from congressman's gosar's comments on the floor today is that he doesn't care. he said bring it on. mccarthy said democrats we are doing this to us, now we are going to bring it back to you. kevin mccarthy waxed on how terrible the democrats have been with their decisions in the house and how they have quieted minority party participation. then he said twice, but when we get the keys we are going do it right back to you. there is no leadership paradigm. it is all about control for him. he is willing to look the other way at the exploitation of violence and glorification of taking the life of a colleague if it means that the republicans get one more marble on their side of the aisle and he gets to become speaker of the house. >> one more republican has voted with the democrats to censure paul gosar. anna, is that adam kinzinger, as far as you know? >> i -- i haven't been able to see who he is. but he is the second republican who we expect who has come out publicly for it. the vote is still open. we will watch that closely going forward. i just want to say one thing to david's point, which is they didn't have to get to a censure resolution today. if kevin mccarthy shoot up and said we are going to have an ethics investigation into this and we are going to go forward in good faith it probably would have been much more business as usual. charlie rangel in 2010 was the last member of kong to be kens sewers. but it was after a very long ethics process. the reason why democrats moved so swiftly here is because he chose not to engage or work with democrats to try to find a way to move forward with an ethics investigation. >> i want to show you, eugene, something speaker pelosi said. and everyone eluded to this. this isn't just about paul gosar. it is about this moment. it is about this unprecedented threat environment and it is about threats of violence directed not just as a democrat but a democratic woman. watch. >> madam speaking, why did you feel like you have to act today on paul gosar? why do you feel like you have to act today? >> et cetera an emergency, violence against women, workplace harassment. really, i think legal matters in terms of threatening a member and threatening the president of the united states. this is -- we have to address it immediately. this is central to our work in congress that we protect the integrity of the house, of the institution. but also the lives of our members. this is outrageous, and outrageous on the part of the republican leadership not to act upon it. >> eugene, you could say those are obvious points. i think just as important as noting without same there is no bottom for the republicans. without outrage none this changes. it is really important we don't gloss over this and say just another day in the house republican caucus. >> right. it's really important that we take a look and say, look, this is not what kevin mccarthy is going along with. this is what he is doing. this is a party that is now taking its cues taking its direction from marjorie taylor green and paul gosar and madison cawthorn, and -- i have seen them called in print the looney bin caucus. but in fact it is more than just their sort offantic insanity. it's the threat that they pose, the physical threat that they pose with this violent rhetoric, especially to women, especially to minorities. i mean, the misogyny and the racism sort of come along with the package. and this is the republican party. this is today for the republican party. and it is hard for any of us to wrap our minds around that, that this isn't -- you know, they are not just sort of averting their eyes while this happens. i mean, they are embracing paul gosar and what he did and defending him against attempts to hold him accountable. it is astonishing what has happened to, you know, the party of lincoln. it is now the party of polypaul gosar. amazing, but it is true. >> lincoln didn't come up today, but alexander hamilton did. i have sound from your brother. i decided sitting here not the air it. but i want to tell you what he said. if he said if i must join alexander hamilton, the first person attempted to be censures by the legislature, so be it, it is done. tell me how he sees himself? is he owe radicalized that he wants to sort of go out in a blaze of glory? is he in touch with reality? just talk about him aligning or sort of seeing in himself alexander hamilton. >> well, i would say that we were taught and it was emphasized in our family that if you did something you shouldn't have done, if somebody misinterpreted something that you did and it caused them, you know, pain, or it was something that they were fearful of, that you had a duty to correct it, to apologize and make amends for it. that was stressed to skpefr over again to us. the fact he's not doing that here and in the past he has shown lack of character when he was out soliciting terrorists to participate in the january 6th attack on our democracy. he was dangling pardons. and in fact before he left office paul went to him for a pardon as well which is evidence of a guilty mind. if you haven't done anything wrong you don't need a pardon. but he has fallen so far from what we were told and how important it is to have character, honor and the ability to know that you have done something you shouldn't have done or somebody misinterpreted it and you needed to clear it up and you needed to apologize. he's somebody that literally needs to be censures and expelled, and i can't say that enough. >> you and your siblings have also called for his criminal prosecution. if he is found guilty then he would go to jail. i want to play something we covered here at the time was released. it is certainly on my mind today. an ad with the republican accountable project put together from you and your siblings around his role in january 6th. >> my name is jennifer gosar. >> my name the tim gosar. >> i am david gosar. i am paul gosar's brother. >> goes sar my brother. >> my brother. >> he should be held accountable for all the lice he told that led to the capitol attack on january 6th. >> they were rallies outside the maricopa county clerk's office. >> paul was in the middle of them. >> he is saying things like we are going to fight to the bitter end. this is our alamo stereo this is our alamo. >> everyone that was a part of that insurrection needs to be held accountable. and absolutely the organizers even more so. >> how would it be justice if the rabble pays the consequence and the ring leaders pay no consequence? we can't have a two-tier system of justice in this country. >> he should have criminal consequences and if he's found guilty, should go to jail. >> tim, since that came out, have you talked to your brother? >> no. i don't have a relationship with paul. i have a zero tolerance policy for white supremacy, for hate and division, and the kind of things that he espouses and has become. so, no, i don't have a relationship with him. and no, i wouldn't take a call from him. >> what would you like to see kevin mccarthy do with a member like your brother? >> well, what does leadership look like? right? leadership looks like somebody that when somebody within your ranks does something they shouldn't have done you call them and. you don't pat them on the back and say nothing to look at here, no problem here. no. you tell them you need to go out and correct this. you need to go to aoc and president biden. you need to apologize, say this isn't my intent. it want my intent and i apologize for that. that's leadership 101. and you are seeing it, really being a problem in the republican party for sure. >> i want to come back to what you reported at the top of the hour anna about the retribution plan for the 13 republican house medicals that voted for the infrastructure plan. where does the campaign retribution stands. >> they are clearly upset with their fellow republicans. the marjorie taylor greens of the world, the matt gaetzs. basically, mccarthy said in that meeting this is not the time to have these fights. et cetera not going to go unnoticed what these members did in terms of votering president biden's agenda but he wants them to be united against the build back better act. i think the other real threat that's important to think about here is a lot of republicans privately have said to us this is a slippery slope. if all of a sudden a member gets taken off of a committee because they break with leadership, what does ma mean, or marjorie taylor green who has said publicly, threatened she may not support kevin mccarthy for speaking after the 2022 election. i think he has stemmed that as far as an actual -- any retribution that's going to happen. but certainly the vitriol and the frustration with those members that did support president is ongoing. i don't expect that to stop. it has really become a litmus test of you are either with the republican party or you are not, the party of donald trump, or you are not. they don't have room for any shades of gray or dissent within their ranks. there was one republican here. it was adam kinzinger who voted yea. one republican david joyce from ohio voted present meaning he didn't take a position either way. noteworthy, not something that was on the radar. >> anna thank you for watching that for us. we have it up on the screen. we will keep watching it. david jolly, i guess i see this differently. waercht this a vote for roads and brings and tunnels and all the stuff -- i would laugh if it wasn't for sick and if it wasn't tied by this threat environment and this climate which we are in because it is so fricking stupid that marjorie taylor green has any power or clout over kevin i pick donald trump's favorite star burst flares mccarthy. but here we are. is it hard to say my constituents voted for joe biden's infrastructure agenda because donald trump could never get it voted. i imagine these 13 members imagine it is perfect o'defensible and popular to be for fixing the roads, bridges and up thes in their districts. >> true. that's a great point. i think part of this is a reflection of our culture politically, where we have come to, which the most important thing is beating the other side not the reasonable policy making that might come from legislating. the difference also lies in the difference between behavior between the united states senate and house. this bill this the senate got 69 votes including mitch mcconnell and others. the democrats lost a handful of progressives. now the story is, these are the republicans that delivered biden's agenda. look, to your point about marjorie taylor green and others who have kind of launched a war on this, this does go to kevin mccarthy's recent history. when he thought he was going to be elevated to the speakership following the retirement of john boehner and he could not corral sufficient votes within his own caucus to become speaker of the house. he has never forgotten that, the embarrass that came with thinking he was going to be speaker and realizing he didn't have the oats votes of his own team to get there i promise you that's what's informing his handling of this situation. he needs marjorie taylor green, matt gaetz if he hasn't been expelled by then. he needs caw torn thou, and he certainly needs donald trump. for kevin mccarthy there is no moral question here in terms of his own leadership. it is a calculus of what gets him the speaker's gavel about a year from now. that is it. that defines mccarthy's behavior even if it means courting marjory tsai taylor green and the others. >> i understand that to be an astute and accurate analysis. but to spare kevin mccarthy embarrassment, we are talking violence, threats of violence. if any of us issued those threats of violence to the president the fbi and the secret service would be on our doorstep. >> absolutely. on mccarthy's behalf he may see it as the internal realpolitik that he is doing. but that's not what it really is. he's fooling himself. because what he is doing is embracing paul gosar, embracing the threat of deadly violence against another member of the house. something that is just so far out of bounds. he is -- you know, by not alienating the mar retaylor greens and paul gosars and matt gaetzs of the world he is in fact embracing them. he is letting them set the agenda for the republican caucus in the house. so he has to own this. he can't just write this off as, well you know, it's what i had to do. he owns it. this is the republican party today. these are the house republicans. and then they are, you know, the choice they made, and it was a choice, is paul gosar. >> unbelievable. anna palmer we are watching the vote. there is now a total of 223 votes in favor of censuring paul gosar. that includes two republicans. to your point, a present vote. do you have any sense, anna, of whether this is about to wrap up? thing there are -- my math isn't great, three votes outstandsing. >> three republican votes outstanding right now. there were several votes done by proxy, so not every single member who voted was actually there on the floor. the only thing i would say that is worth noting is there are several republicans who have been targeted by marjorie taylor green and others that were potentially, we were watching, also that was in tom reed from new york. he actually went to the signing ceremony of the bipartisan infrastructure bill into law at the white house, as well as fred upton, the michigan republican who has had a lot of threats leveled against him after marjorie taylor green put his phone number on twitter. and they all voted no, to not censure gosar. what we are hearing on david joyce, who voted present is that he is on the ethics committee. he believes it is going to come before the ethics committee. so he didn't want to put his position out either way. that's the way it looks like it is going to wrap up. democrats profoundly for this and republicans resoundingly saying they do not support it. >> tim, if your brother is watching any of this coverage, what would you say to him? >> i would say, shame on you. i would say you owe aoc and president biden an apology. i would say if you have any charge left, you step up and be someone that holds a position of public trust and deserves it, which he doesn't. so he's not going to do any of those things, nicolle. i would say, piggybacking on something that eugene said, one of the calculations for kevin mccarthy is also that paul is one of trump's fascist foot soldiers. so if he comes after paul, he's also stepping on trump because paul is one of his fascist foot soldiers. and i applaud representative cheney and iz kin singer for representing and sticking up for the soul of our country and the future of our democracy. >> tim, my last question for you is about your brother and the violent images. what is sort of his history with violent imagery. hold on tim, i believe they are announcing the vote. let's listen. >> anna, we just missed that. can you fill us in? >> they just gavelled saying the vote is now closed. >> and they have the votes to censure paul gosar, right. >> speaker pelosi is about to come on and speak, i believe. she's going to gavel. >> will representative gosar present himself in the well. buy its adoption of house resolution 789, the house has resolved that represent paul gosar of arizona be sense sewers. that represent paul gosar forth with rent himself in the well of the house for the pronouncement of censure that representative paul gosar be censured with the public reading of this resolution by the officer and that paul gosar be and is hereby remove from the committee of natural resources and the committee of oversight and reform. that's it. >> we knew this is what would transpire today. this hour. it's still jaw-dropping to hear. tim, i interrupted you before i even got the question ott. ear reaction to speaker pelosi? >> an appropriate vote, an appropriate action. and i would urge speaker pelosi and leadership and the sensible reasonable representatives to consider expulsion. if they look at his record from the time he came into congress in 2011 as a birther, as somebody that was saying president obama was not a legitimate president or a citizen of this country through clichb bundy fiasco, through the white nationalist ties that he has, and fund-raising efforts, covid, january 6th, and now this threatening a coworker that in any other situation -- any other situation, any place in this country, would have gotten you fired -- i ask speaker pelosi, leadership, and congress to expel him as well. >> tim, you called him dangerous. the imagery was violence. do you think he is capable of violence himself? >> i do. and i think -- i referenced it earlier when he was growing up, when we were growing up, he was the oldest in our family. and he was threatened and bullied and marginalized and hazed. so he knows what that feels like. instead of being the person that comes out and says i am going to make sure i am that person that helps people out that don't have power, that don't have political persuasion, that don't have a voice that the government needs to work for them -- no. that's not what he is. he's the bully that bullied him. and so, again i would say that this was a very appropriate vote, very appropriate day. and i think there is more work to be done as far as getting him expelled. he has no business being in congress doing what he has done. and if they look at his record, they will see that. the totality of his record speaks volumes to who he is and that he is unfit for office and dangerous to our democracy and our country. >> tim gosar, i am sorry for what i can only imagine is a painful day. and i am really grateful to you for spending time to talk to us about it from a perspective that is not available in any other humans other than you and your siblings. so thank you very, very, very much stereo thank you for having me. >> you gene, i'm just -- let me pick my jaw up off the table that paul gosar is capable of violence in the view of his brother. paul gosar deserves more than this in the view of his brother. >> yeah. >> and again, i just can't get beyond this moment in which we are living. anna is in the building, covering the building, david jolly worked in the building. it is so visceral, the idea that anyone that works there could circulate violent imagery, a video of a colleague being murdered after january 6th. >> right. and, look, as tim gosar said, and let me applaud him and thank him for his candor. it must be, you know, very difficult. it's his brother that he has to talk about in this way. but he does it so honestly and forthrightly. you know, in any other workplace in america, anybody who did what paul gosar did would be fired, full stop, by the ends of the day. clean out your desk, you are gone. and you know, this potential -- i mean, it was a threat that he issued against aoc and against president biden. and that's a serious matter as well, that in a lot of jurisdictions could bring the attention of criminal prosecutors. but the important thing -- today is an important day. it was important, i believe, for democrats to do this, for speaker pelosi to do this. and for the house to do this, not just democrats. because there were at least a couple republicans who joined in. a line has to be drawn. and there has to be consequences for this sort of behavior. and so there were consequences. he was censured. he was taken off his committees. and at least -- you know, maybe it won't do any good. maybe it won't affect the behavior of marjorie taylor green or of matt gaetz or of the others. but they will know that there will be consequences when they cross this sort of bright line. so i think it was just important, and we should appreciate that, that the house did the right thing. >> eugene, anna, david, stay with us. i want to add to our conversation barbara lee of california, one of the lawmakers who cosponsored the resolution that passed the house of representatives, a bipartisan resolution, to censure paul gosar. your reaction? >> first of all, we had to do it. it is really not a happy day that we had to do this. leader mccarthy wouldn't do it. so democrats had to. first of all, we know that hate speech leads to hate crimes. we know that death threats lead to death. look at what is taking place throughout the country in terms of women and people of color and the threats we are receiving each and every day. i have had decades of death threats. i know what this is about. we had to do something. enough is enough. this hatred, this trying to mischaracterize what mr. gosar said and did, it is no laughing matter. this was a direct threat to congresswoman ocasio cortez and to our president and it cannot be tolerated. in the broader community throughout the country, this could have been an act that could warrant some criminal charges. so, come on, the minimal we could do is what we did today in terms of censure and take him off his committees. enough is enough. >> congresswoman, his brother believes that criminal investigation and prosecution is warranted. do you see that in the cards? >> well, i'm not sure. you know, the authorities have to address that in terms of the criminal justice system. but i am telling you, perpetrating hate really leads to violence. perpetrating death threats, and again, so many of us, for decades, have experienced this. and we know what they lead to. they lead to death. they lead to violence. and what's taking place in our country cannot be tolerated. we need to at least be the model of civility in the congress so that we can demonstrate that we know how to have our differences without threatening to kill someone and without putting forth these hate messages. so wasn't doe know where this takes in terms of the, you know, broader criminal justice system, but i do know that we had to act and we had to act today because the republicans would not -- leader mccarthy would not. they made a joke out of it and that was that. >> i want to show you something that jackie speier said earlier today. i will read it for you. we are having a hard time finding that. she said i am a victim of violence, i know what it is like. i also was this the gallery clamoring for life when the shots rang out in speaker's lobe. it is disgusting and profoundly unacceptable. do you feel safe? do you think congresswoman alexandria ocasio cortez is safe? >> listen, we have threats each and every day. we face this all of the time. what's important is that we understand that we are not going to tolerate this. it's shameful what happened on january 6th. this was an attempted coup in trying to dismantle our democracy and prevent the peaceful transfer of power. i too was on the floor and had to evacuate. it was terror attack. domestic terrorism. the country has to come to grips with the fact that there are those out there who are perpetrating and promoting violence. and we all have to be vigilant. we have to understand what's out there. but we are not going to let it keep us from doing our job. we are going to speak out for justice. we are going to speak out for our people. we are going to do the job people sent us here to do. it is a shame and disgrace that we have to do it in this kind of environment of hate and of potential violence. we are not going to let that deter us.believe you me we understand what the risks are and hopefully republicans understand that, too. and the january 6th committee, which chairman thompson is chairing, will get to the bottom of this. and so then we will know who is responsible for perpetuating all of this. and we need to stop it and we need to send a signal to our young people that violence is no option. is not an option at all. >> congresswoman, i used to be a unre. i know some of these republicans in the house and the senate. and when the terrorism -- you described this as terrorism. when the terrorism was of the foreign variety, al qaeda or isis, there was quite literally nothing that republicans wouldn't do from the surveillance state to war to -- i mean, we still take our shoes off at airports because of all the thing that we did after 9/11 to make sure that never happened again. can you protect against terrorism as just one party and two members of the other? >> it should be bipartisan, should be non-partisan. and our national security agencies designated domestic terrorism as the top national security threat. terrorists don't determine who they are going to attack based on their party. domestic terrorism is real, republicans need to understand that. they need to work with democrats to try to make sure that we stamp this out. this is a democracy. this is not an authoritarian dictatorship. donald trump unfortunately, you know, pumped this up in terms of the vial rhetoric which he used throughout his presidency and before. so he has developed now a following that really believes that they have the right to engage in violent acts. and so republicans need to condemn this and work with us to stop it, just as democrats are. >> as of today, only two republicans did that. adam kin zinger and liz cheney. congresswoman barbara lee thank you for joining us. anna palmer thank you for spending so much of the hour with us. eugene and david stick around. when we come back, how the big lie has become totally normalized by extreme members on the right, trump election fraud pushers put into real jobs that have real consequences on our elections as polling continues to show a growing group who believe 2020 was stolen from the twice impeached expresident, the flashing red warning signs for 2022 and beyond. and later in the program, law enforcement taking steps to protect teachers and school administrators who are increasingly under threat of violence as cultural battles over things like masks and race heat up. at times turning into violent clashes. all those stories and more when "deadline: white house" continues after a quick break. don't go anywhere. don't go anywhere. to protect school boards in america. how does that land inside the fbi? >> well, i think the first thing is people need to step back and say who in their right mind would oppose law enforcement looking into threats of violence against teachers. just the proposition that anybody would have a concern about that is mind boggling. when you look at the letter from attorney general garland, it makes clear this is part of an outreach to state and local law enforcement officials and not something that the fbi and doj are going to swoop in and do. merely and effort to reach out to local law enforcement to see what's going on at the ground and particularly as it relates to the fbi, to see if there are things that relate to a broader threat. so to see if there are individuals who are acting in a coordinated way. whether that's outside or across state lines. whether this is something beyond what a state or state law enforcement agency might do. but what it isn't is anything of the sort that you saw some of those crazy comments coming out of congress which again are absolutely political statements. they couldn't be further from the truth and i think what you see in the ag's letter is something very consistent with the fbi's mission to understand whether there is a broader sort of criminal activity going on. this is not targeting first amendment protected speech. not targeting parents who are going to school board meetings and protesting. this is looking at violent threats and trying to understand whether there is a broader issue beyond any one particular school district or city or state. >> and pete, from watching conservative media, which i definitely keep an eye on, the broader message, the message is nationalized. it is a national, right wing message to target school board to infiltrate and with threats. so how else can we respond in terms of protecting from any of those calls to action on the far right that become violent? >> i think we need to call it out for what it is. and this, you have to look at this in the totality of what's going on. all of this is part of a broad pattern of activity. everything you talked about during your first hour about the sensors of congressman gosar, all of these things are an attempt by some in the republican party to normalize violence as a part of the political process. whether it's a congressman making threats against another, whether it's a particular individual making threats against a schoolteacher or board member they don't agree with, all of this activity points together to encouraging violence, to making violence seem normal, common place, and it's only a matter of time, i'm convinced, before something very, very serious and grave happens where we end up with people who are wounded or worse, killed. and we have to understand that this is a broad pattern of activity and when you look at the totality of it, hopefully that drives home the point that this is an extraordinarily severe movement and something we need to fight against. >> fbi director wray has testified that the gretest threat to the homeland is violence extremism and the largest bucket, the word he uses, is domestic threat side? >> well, it's a challenge, nicolle. we saw that certainly in the run up to january 6th that there was a great deal of concern that said about not wanting to undually monitor things that are purely protected first amendment speech. having said that, i think there's valid criticism and we'll see what congress determines as part of their investigations into january 6th, that the fbi was probably a little too not looking aggressively enough that threats that were taking place and that were present on the internet and that would be within the fbi's authorities to read and monitor. even in the context of the limitations placed on the fbi and the first amendment. look, it's clear. whether it is political speech, whether it is a parent speech to a school board, that the fbi, because of some very hard lessons learned in the '50s, and '60s and '70s, has a great deal of regulated behavior and what the fbi can and cannot do in the context of people's right to free protective speech and parents at meeting is crazy because what's happening is the bureau is merely responding and the dhs is responding to the threat indicators they see on a day-to-day basis. that's what they do. i've put together those national threat advisory bulletins before. i've overseen that process before and it's totally based on lying analysts who are looking at looking at information. it's not based on politics or attempts to suppress free speech. so clearly what republicans are doing, they're hijacking, weaponizing real threats for political purposes, but the republican party, my party, used to be the party of public safety. and now it's becoming the party of political violence. and you're seeing that at all levels of government. you've got members of congress who felt for their lives to vote a certain way, but it's not at the federal level anymore. now we're talking about poll workers and school board members who are having to change locations and worry about their personal safety. why is this tied to republicans? because it's gop rhetoric and the conspiracy theories that are fans the flames of this. what's ironic is that republicans are going out and trying to cover up these efforts of the justice department to look into the threats because they're worried about what the answers lead and it's that those individuals who show up at these meetings and level physical threats of violence against a school board member are likely people who have been inspired by gop rhetoric. so all roads lead back to a radicalized republican party and i suspect that that's an ulterior motive for why some of these members of congress want to try to get the justice department off the case. >> today, all but two republicans were fine with paul gosar distributing a video in which he murders in an animated video, congressman ocasio-cortez. how do you break the fever? >> look, at the end of the day, really the only way to break the fever is you've got to unseat some of these people from congress. so you know, there's enormous hypocrisy in house republican leadership. everyone watching this show right now knows that if the roles were reversed and if aoc ran an ad that demonstrated violence against paul gosar, that house majority leader kevin mccarthy or minority leader, would be on tv and radio every single minute of every day until she was censured for her actions or until democratic leadership punished her in some way, shape, or form. they are not doing that in the case of paul gosar. it is naked hypocrisy. but we're not actually going to have a difference here by simply shaming republican leaders. it is going to require electoral effects. we are going to have to unseat some of these radical members of congress to show them it's not profitable to behave in this way. it's one of the things that our organization is trying to do. we're trying to go after these dividers out there, but it's an uphill battle because they've now radicalized an electorate to believe their misinformation and as pete noted, politically violent tactics. political violence has become a tool for them rather than something to condemn. that is alarming. we are living a new age of political violence that we haven't seen in many decades. >> i asked congressman shawn patrick this question that miles is getting at. how to unseat republicans and specifically how to use this issue of education against them. here was his answer. i'm sorry. this is a quote. every house republican voted against the most important funding for our public schools in decades which we passed in the $1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue plan in march. democrats are the party of education. if we engage on that subject, we'll win that debate with republicans who are all talk and no action. we will take seriously and respond aggressively to the lies and distortions that republicans substitute for having good ideas on education, starting with critical race theory. i raise that because he's in charge of the campaigns and that sounds like a, a way to get democrats back on offense, but i haven't seen it in action yet. and i wonder if you have the sense from your reporting that democrats appreciate how potent this sort of jumble of race baiting and disinformation was on the right in the virginia gub gubernatorial race? >> the answer was yes, they appreciated how potent it was, but didn't have a good response to it. what happened was, i'm glad we're pointing out that race was a critical part of this making education a priority for republicans in that race. what they were doing was fomenting moral outrage. they were falsely telling parents their children were being taught they were ashamed for being white. what democrats said is that's not what this is and that's a racist attack and then republicans said to voters, see, look, democrats think you're racist. that's something that further angers, immobilizes and in some case, radicalizes folks. and that became scary for a lot of parents. there are a lot of parents who genuinely believe this nonsense. what democrats need to do is say look, we know that education is an issue. this pandemic has left our kids behind. teachers and schools are still struggling just to get back up to speed, to keep students safe, to catch them up and to deal with all of the behavioral impacts on these students and this is our plan. we have built in to our agenda ways to address all of those things and these are things that all parents should be very, very concerned about. that's the way to drown out a message of lies because all of those things are things that parents care about across the ideological spectrum, but that latter part didn't happen in virginia. just the former part did. and when that happens, moral outrage always wins. that's why republicans keep turning back to it over and over again. >> tied to sort of stirring the passions and stirring up proud boys outside a school board sort of moral outrage is effective. that they are a party that is shrinking in number and they know that the only way to get people to the polls is to go to the tried and true tricks and that is race baiting, moral outrage, and they are doubling down on that. i hope that they actually do care about school officials and that they could be threatened and maybe they don't appreciate that danger greg abbott has brought us to such a small place. we've got to get past that small, mean vision of texas and get back to the big things. we've got the make sure everyone can come together and allow this state to reveal its potential. i'm pretty proud of tex and i want to make sure i serve this state as its next governor. >> that was former congressman, beto o'rourke, giving his first televised interview since announcing to chris hayes he's running to be governor of texas. it is his second time running statewide after losing the senate race to ted cruz in 2018 by less than three points. in texas, that is a nail biter. he faces an uphill climb. a democrat has not won a statewide race in texas since 1994, but he's focusing on the issues that impact texans, avoiding national scuffles, specifically former president. o'rourke says this, quote, trump doesn't live in texas. biden doesn't live in texas. 30 million of us are what's important to me. we're back with phil and kim. so i made a list of the stories that we have covered beto o'rourke as a tex an on just in the last year. the power grid. he was driving around trying to bring sort of essential services to people. the mask issue. he was soliciting local information about where they were sort of debating and fighting about mask mandates. voting rights. he's been all over the voting rights issue. he's led marches to the state capital and he was in el paso on and around that massacre there. he has a ground experience in this state that will likely exceed anyone that has tried to sort of unseat a republican and i wonder, phil, what you make of the beto o'rourke we've watched where sort of those texas crises have intersected with the national conversation? >> yeah, well, nicolle, you're absolutely right to point out all of the ways he's tried to lead on texas specific issues. he's also a national political figure. the last campaign he ran, he was campaigning against trump. he was running to be the democratic nominee to take trump on in 2020. so it will be difficult if not impossible for him to completely separate himself from national politics since he made voters in texas view him as somehow like a local boy who doesn't have anything to do with what's going on in the rest of the country when in fact, he previously aspired to lead the rest of the country. that being said, he certainly has this grass roots connection and he's been ingrounded in these texas issues as you laid out, and that should end up helping him in this campaign as he tries to really wage what looks to be an uphill battle against greg abbott. >> kim, the polls right now, that's very early, show him within the margin of error. abbott at 44%. o'rourke, 43%. 10% of the respondents in the poll of texas voters are undecided. abbott isn't just a normal republican. the most nationalized, right winger right now. he's at the center of the most radical abortion position ever championed by a republican successfully. it is a near total ban on abortion. he is at the center of some of the most reckless policies when it came to covid. things that were popular with pluralties and majorities of texas voters. democrats and republicans. his abdication of leadership that led to death of his texans around the power grid failure became a national story. one around in which he went on fox news and basically said suck a lemon. he is also a highly nationalized and polarizing and for a texas republican, unpopular figure. >> i think that that is right. i always say that local races are more local than anything, but i do recognize in recent years all elections right down to school boards have become more nationalized and in this case, that is also true. one reason we hear beto o'rourke saying that neither biden or trump is on the ballot is because he knows that biden and trump weigh heavily on this race. president biden's favorability ratings, which are falling, which is bad news for him, and i'm sure a great number of republicans in texas believe that donald trump won the election. at the same time, that the diagram of those folks who also really strongly back governor abbott's policies that you talked about is probably just a circle. it's the same people. so for all of the reasons that this is a local race is the same, they're the same reasons why this is such a national race and that is a benefit to beto o'rourke to the extent that he is, too, a national figure, but to texans who want someone popular who, you know, is more focused on texas, that could probably work against him. >> phil, what are you going to watch for? are you going to pay attention to this race? >> oh, absolutely. >> sorry. go ahead. >> it could end up being one of the marquee statewide races next year. the desantis re-election as well in florida. another major national figure in the gubernatorial ranks will draw a lot of attention. abbott versus o'rourke, those are two of the polls in our politics today and it will be really interesting to see how that state turns out. >> i always have a soft spot for texas politics so we'll pay attention to it. thank you so much for spending some time with us. when we come
