prohibitive from testifying, but i'm asking much more directly, will the government yuck. about all the money in this and who will be helped. >> well they did call i laid at the white house brian, so we're probably not gonna see the president tonight, but that's not to say that we're not gonna hear from other democrats, who are i -- as well as for the biden white house. my white house inbox immediately filled up with emails applause with senators who had been wanting to theirs to pass from other lawmakers and institutions who had been lobbying for different causes in this bill. because this is a win for democrats. the cheers that you heard on the floor, there, come after hours and weeks of hard deliberations and negotiations, policy items that were important falling by the way side. only to beat revised and brought back in, moderates having their arms twisted but they would move on those tonight on the vote that we haven't seen yet, which is on the build back better package. i want to walk you through what's about to happen because they're in celebration about the bipartisan infrastructure bill that is happening. but now, we are seeing the house go on a procedural vote. there's going to be one procedural vote followed by a second procedural vote, the second one is what actually matters because as white kept all the different factions on board tonight. the second vote is a vote on the rules for the build back better act. it's what you need before you actually proceed on to the actual vote for that acts. and that bill, the actual vote, is not going to come for about a week. because there is a commitment that it will come on the week of november 15th. the house in the senate are both out next week, they're on recess, many lawmakers feel is very well earned given the late hours and hard work it's done. but when they get back the house is going to move on his build back better act, for a larger social spending bill so they can send it over to the senate and begin the process there. so the work might be down on one part of it, but certainly is still continuing on another. >> so ali, another way to put it on this huge biden build back better, even though we've been admonished by donny deutsch and others that they need a better name, is that they're going to have ayo use. that to placate and satisfy everybody, as long as the numbers, according to the auditors and the congressional budget audit office, as long as the numbers come out even steven, they will get the votes they are owed. are we correct about that? >> progressives, putting it in a letter, putting it out publicly, giving their assurances that if progressives came along on this bipartisan infrastructure vote, which they have. the moderate democrats, which we're gonna see tonight, which is a procedural sleight of hand say that they can move on both of these bills in tampa from, moderna said they vow they would move with the rest of the party in two weeks on the build back better act. once they see a pbo scorer, once they see what the actual monetary impacts is, barring anything crazy, even steven as you said. they will move with the rest of their party to push us in that phase of it through to the senate. >> ali vitali final question, might be a little bit dicey, i understand you report on congress, you are not the speaker majority of margaret a leader, you don't make policy. >> thankfully, yes. >> just curious, when people in marriage and life get busy at work. it's not uncommon certainly in our line of work to cancel a vacation, cancel upcoming time off you have scheduled. what are both houses of congress at this point in the bidens hesitancy doing, taking next week off? >> this was the plan, congress doesn't love to get rid of their vacation, this might not be why they're super popular with the american people. i can say though, in the weekends that they have, even though they have been technically voted in congress, they have in the committee doing the work on crafting the policy that they have been assigned. we've seen lawmakers continuing to have these negotiations behind the scene. the caucuses have been huddling in meetings, either on zoom or here in person, or on the phone. this hasn't stopped. over the course of the last few weeks, if anything brian, the momentum is only gained force. in part because the white house is really felt the pressure on this. they wanted to not erwin, maybe before the virginia governor's race. we know that is gonna last for democrats. but really there is a continued push, here, and we're going to continue to see this gain pressure from progressives, who can't afford to lose momentum that they have here. they have now lost their leverage, because they voted on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, this is now all about the social spending package. when they were working those two bills together, progressives had a lot of leverage there. now though, it's all about the personalities they've been focused on in washington, joe manchin, kyrsten sinema, we know activists of that continue to follow them. even though they haven't been here on the hill for a day or so. but this pressure is only going to continue. recess week is good for them. but they are probably going to use this time to do, frankly, is go home and sell it to their districts. because the right now the message has been process, processed, process. you're not sign much when you're sane process. right now it's up to democrats tell what they've actually done here. the tunnels that they're going to build, the bridges that they're going to bills there with the infrastructure bill that they've already passed. and with the spending package that they're hoping to make progress on during thanksgiving and in the weeks after that. >> with diplomacy like that you can come to the state department, thank you for example a with us and covering the story so beautifully tonight at the capitol. ali vitali are women on the hill. don calloway remains with us tonight, democratic strategist, founder of the -- 's susan del percio political analyst and a veteran political strategist. susan, i'll start with you on these liberal democrats who have not voted for infrastructure. and maybe a tougher 60,000 foot question. what are we? are we a progressive country? are we have senator country? a rehab center right? center-left? what do you think we are? >> yes. we are all of that. >> that's all the time we have, good evening everybody. >> here is the thing, is this infrastructure bill is fantastic, it is great, it is bipartisan. but it could've been done three months ago, and the president would not have seen his poll numbers quite so low. because what else are we looking at tonight? what was the second vote? it was democrat said liberating that they negotiated with themselves. and they still had to sell that negotiate a bill to the senate, which will not get approved as it is. so, i think we're looking into way past thanksgiving, probably december, as they come across the debt ceiling. and all of this is just completely wasted time in that they could've gotten this done sooner, and they probably would have ended up with the same result. i am a little -- some of the progressive caucus voting though. don mentioned earlier that those members were able to vote no because they had to vote no, but it is a kind of a snub to the moderate democrats, who made a deal to vote yes on those next couple of things. and they didn't share it. i find it a little disingenuous. >> don calloway i can offer you 45 seconds in either a bottle or agreement with susan. >> well the first thing it's important to note is that those democrats that vote that way because they have safety. and the second thing is, this country, i don't know that this country is progressive, i certainly think we're moving away from the conservative side of things, but fundamentally this country is a social evolving by capitalist country. that is the fundamental ideology of the country, is a classiest o get to cornell west here in the late hours. we showed ali vitali too for doing joanna's work, give props to them when they deserve it. >> absolutely, as i was trying to do to all of us friends tonight, for covering and hanging out with us into what is now saturday morning here on the east. big thanks to alibaba tally and our friend don calloway and susan del percio, so the rest of our viewers who tuned in, expect to see rachel maddow. she's coming up on right after this break. this break this break without raising your blood pressure be there for life's best moments with coricidin. now in sugar free liquid. super emma just about sleeps in her cape. but when we realized she was battling sensitive skin, we switched to tide hygienic clean free. it's gentle on her skin, and out cleans our old free detergent. tide hygienic clean free. hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. feel stuck with student loan debt? the news that i woke up to today that i almost couldn't believe. the trial took about 1200 people and within five days of starting to show symptoms, half the people in the trial got the drug, half got a placebo, there were 600 people who got the placebo, of those 600 people who effectively weren't treated who got the placebo instead of the drug, 41 of those 600 people ended up in the hospital. ten of them and the dying. there were these other 600 people who got the drug, on the same timeline and of those 600 people who got the drug, there weren't 41 people hospitalized, there were six people hospitalized and there weren't ten people who died, there were zero people who died. those were the results among people who got the drug five days after they got their first symptoms, dramatically better odds in terms of keeping yourself out of the hospital and staying alive. for people who got the drug within five days of first showing symptoms, the results were even stronger among people who got the drug faster. if you can get the drug within three days of showing symptoms, well, there was just under 400 people in that group who got the drug a little bit earlier and the placebo group, the ones who didn't get the drug, sadly, 27 of those ended up in the hospital, seven died. for the people who got the drug, only three people ended up in the hospital and none of them died. these are phenomenally good results, if you are older than 65 or if you have any of the gazillionth comorbidities that make you higher risk for serious illness if you get covid, of these clinical trials bear out, it looks like we're about to have a drug that will make it 89% less likely that you will end up in the hospital or dead. if you get infected with covid and you can get this drug early, right after you start having symptoms, 89% effective at reducing hospitalizations and death, that is off the charts. this is a new drug from pfizer, a couple of weeks ago you'll remember merck went to the fda to try to get approval for its covid treatment, its new anti viral pill, the data on the mark pill, frankly, looked great, it reduces hospitalization and death by 50%. but this other one that we just got the new data on from pfizer, it's not 50% effective, it's nearly 90% effective. that is potentially huge. a lot of people today observing this news call it a potential game-changer in terms of the pandemic, the people who have the broaddus horizons, the long term vision on this pandemic from the beginning have just been rejoicing today at this news. i mean, you put this into the broader picture, between the vaccination rates ticking, up and up, slowly, but still taking up an up, with the vaccine requirements, more and more of them going into effect all over the country which will bring the vaccination rates up higher, with kids ages five and up being approved for vaccines, that will bring the overall vaccination rates up even higher. and now, coming down the pike, real treatment options that can keep people from being hospitalized and dying. i mean, this is getting close to the point where are we quiver is fool. we know that science might help us from this thing. lots of caveats, lots of things to watch for, first of all, and importantly, this is just clinical trial data for the new pfizer drug, it's not peer reviewed, that said the clinical trial data was so overwhelmingly encouraging that the oversight board which was advising this trial actually told them to call off the trial, to stop it because the efficacy of the drug was so strong in the trial and so evident in the trial that according to the advisory board, they believed it was no longer ethical to keep the trial going because it was no longer ethical to keep even have the people in the trial just the placebo, not when the other half were showing such incredible benefits from it. that is a very strong sign, still though, it's not prereview, that is a very important part of the process. we will have to see what pfizer does in terms of getting this pill made and importantly made all over the world. merck, with their anti viral pill, they set a good example last week, they took their pill to the medicines patent pool of the un and their by made a deal to let countries all over the world, factories all over the world start making their anti viral pill, including factories in africa, asia, other places, particularly poor populations would otherwise have a hard time competing and affording a western manufactured drug, merck took major steps last week, unprecedented steps last week to make sure it's anti viral pill, that keeps people alive, they took unprecedented steps last week to make sure that there is going to be made available for real all over the world. pfizer, with its pill, they will have to do that or something like that with this drug as well, if this all turns out to be as good as it looks, they will have to follow that same path, or something that will have that same effect. i mean, this isn't a cure, that isn't how diseases like this work, apparently, but, again, look at what we have, we have ways to stop most people from getting this disease, and to stop people from getting super sick and dying if they do get it. i mean, well, you know, if you have those two pieces of it, if you have a vaccine that keeps most people from getting it, and you have treatment that prevents people from getting too sick and dying if they do get infected, i mean, my god, we're on the road home. think good fox, thank you to science, thank you the activists who first this issue of people in poor countries being able to get lifesaving drugs even when those drugs were invented in the west. because those activists forced the pathways which we are finally going to use to make sure that people in poor countries can get western derived drugs for a global pandemic. because we need to treat it and get rid of it worldwide or will never go away. these things finally falling into place, this could be the road home, it is such good news. i know if you're not paying close attention to his, you see this headline and thing and interesting trial, but this is a big deal. this is not a bend in the role this is a right turn. so it's good news, we will have more that coming up later on, including some of the surprising news about old drug research, and honestly, the old activism around drug that helped make this new drug possible. not a cure but it is looking like this might bring us closer than we ever thought we would get to what is effectively a cure. that is great news. on a totally different front, we got great news on the economy today and jobs. you might have seen the headlines about how the u.s. economy is roaring back job creation wars back. that's because of good news yesterday that was topped with morgan, and good news today came with an extra good news chaser. yesterday we had the unemployment claims, just a number of americans final billing for unemployment each week. the week before president biden was inaugurated the weekly unemployment rate claims were just astonishingly terrible, the last week of the job -- 886,000 people filed for unemployment. as of this week, this number is down to 269, 000, it has dropped 70%. that means in terms of the numbers of americans applying for unemployment per week we are back now almost to normal levels before the pandemic even happened. that was the news yesterday, today the news got better. economists were expecting the number of new jobs added to the economy would be about 450,000 when the numbers actually came in and turns out it was 531,000. considerably better than the expectations. and, the numbers for the past two months got a just a today, in terms of the number that were reported for august in september the numbers were incorrect, they were too low, the revisions today show that in the last two months that were another 235,000 jobs added on top of the 531,000 reported today. which is, honestly, a stunning number. it's great news about the economy and that's why you saw the stock market shoot up today. that's why there were all these headlines today about the economy roaring back. to put it in perspective in a way that your trump supporting friends might find it easy to grasp, even today, they like to talk about how well the economy did in trump's first two years in office, they like to claim that in trump's first two years in office we had the greatest u.s. economy in history, more jobs created than ever, it's never been all of that sound of a claim from the beginning, the reason they make the claims because from the two years the economy created 405 million jobs, as of today we know in president biden's first ten months in office the economy has created 5.8 million jobs. oh. trump folks love to brag about the job numbers in the first two years of trump's term, so far the economy under joe biden's way, way ahead of those numbers. don't forget, if you are writing for the beltway press, all day every day, every store has to be about how the democrats are doomed. [laughs] there are huge historic economic gains under president biden, also game changing scientific breakthroughs, and by the way the other party standard bearer will need an abacus soon to count of the grand jury hearings. but sure, the beltway presses like yes, maybe the democrats should abolish themselves, things are so terrible for them. it's another one of those days. this is what the streets look like today in glasgow, scotland outside international climate summit. thousands of protesters in the streets demanding real action on climate change from the world leaders gather there for the big climate summit, organizers say tens of thousands of people took part in today's protests, and if you look closely at who all those tens of thousands of people were today in the streets of glasgow, you pretty quickly notice that a lot of the protesters were really young. lots of college kids, lots of teenagers who took off from school, and even lots of kids so young that they were there today with their parents. we saw lots of great signs today. every disaster movie starts with ignoring a scientist. also this one, there is no planet b. i felt quite young and hip today when i understood this one to be an elite reference, it's getting hot in here, so take off all your coal! also this one, i want to hot boyfriend not a hot planet. there were not a ton of older folks on the streets today that's because this protests was advance, an appetizer for what is happening. today's protest was a youth protest was organized by a student group fridays for future, the founder of that group, climate activist greta thunberg gave the headlining speech today, she didn't pull any punches, she didn't put a shine on it, she called the climate summit is a pr event, she said the summit has transformed into a two week long celebration of business as usual, which she has famously shorthanded as nonsense. she gave the speech today. but again, those massive protests, those big youths protests in scotland, just a preview of what is expected to be even bigger marches coming tomorrow, hundred thousand people of all ages are expected to come to the protests for climate justice tomorrow in glasgow, which is a unique way to put pressure on those world leaders there. we're also watching this developing news tonight, that the effort to bring a criminal charge against former new york governor andrew cuomo might be collapsing tonight, we're gonna have more on this later on a bus when the news of first broke a few days ago that a misdemeanor charge had been filed against cuomo related to the sexual abuse, sexual harassment scandal that led him to resigned the governorship, we noted at the time that charge was filed at the process seem to be a little hanky, there seemed to be some procedural, some unusual things about the process under which the charge was filed. things seem to be done the way they aren't usually done. those initial concerns about how this was unfolding, those seem to be bearing fruit tonight, the prosecutors office in that part of new york state is calling foul and saying that charges cannot be pursued in this way, the story of andrew cuomo is turning into a really sticky story, we will have more and that continues to be a developing story tonight. i guess lots going on, a bunch of good news tonight but also a lot of interesting news a lot of developing news a lot of things that we are still watching even this late into a friday night. but here, right now, here is my nomination for just purely the weirdest news of the day, this is the day that michael schmidt broke in the new york times, and when i read this in a new york times today, every single word of it was completely new to me. completely out of the blue. it was like a newspaper visiting from another planet. who did what? there's an invest -- of raid, an investigation for what, for what's got stolen? here's the headline today in the times, people try to project vera house scrutinize a theft of diary from biden's daughter. the sub head there, the fbi i carried out search warrants in new york, as part of the justice department investigation into how pages from ashley biden's journal came to be published by right-wing website. the theft of a diary from the daughter of president biden. it here's how michael schmidt in the times, today explained what happened here. i would get a half before the election and october 24th, some random right-wing website published images, published pictures of handwritten pages from what appeared to be the personal diary of president biden's daughter, ashley. quote, the trump administration justice department, then led by attorney general william barr, opened an investigation into the matter shortly after a representative of the biden family reported to federal authorities in october 2020, that several of miss biden's personal items have been stolen in a burglary. now today, in an investigation that the times said it has been handled by fbi agents and federal prosecutors in manhattan who work on public corruption matters, today in conjunction with that investigation, two homes were searched by the fbi, an apartment on east 31st street in manhattan, -- both properties are associated with the right-wing activist group project veritas. which put out a statement today after the times broke a story, denouncing the fact that the fbi had denouncing stories, also confirming that they happened, also confirming that the group had something to do with the handling of the stolen item. again, considering what the stolen item is here. this is kind of nuts, is it not? a burglary, that results in the president's daughter having her personal diary stolen. the diary pages then and up published on the right-wing website, now the fbi's rating house as members of this right-wing group, and the right-wing group admits that their members had access to this thing that was stolen from the president's daughter? what? if this were a movie, you would've walked out by now. because this would've been out to outlandish to believe. if this was a movie, this would be too fictional to even pass muster. as reality, this is absolutely unbelievable. joining us now is michael schmidt, washington correspondent for the new york times, he's the lead byline on the scoop today, thank you for making time. >> thanks for having me. >> am i misconstruing any of this, or missing any important part of it? i confess that i had no idea that actually biden's diary had been stolen, that pieces ended up circulating and right-wing pressed before the election, that i explain any of that wrong? >> no. i think the biggest thing that stands up to me about this, is that this comes out ten days before the 2020 election. this was a period of time in which donald trump was trying to do everything he could to undermine the biden children. we had the entire hunter laptop issue flying around, rudy giuliani pushing it. and in the middle of it, this came out, and very few people picked up on it. but at the heart of it, but was emerging, could be one of the dirtiest tricks that went on against sort of innocent bystanders in the entire 2020 election. here was someone who had a low profile, was a child of one of the candidates, and was burglarized, a diary was stolen, and it was put online. now it didn't really stephen bunch of public attention, and there's a good reason why this didn't but it was a pretty significant thing that i have seen in all the ups and downs and backs and fourth of the past few years. >> it's incredible and again because so much of this is new to the public right now. because nobody knew this to happen. what can you tell us about the burglary itself? was this believed at the time to have been a run-of-the-mill property crime that had nothing to do with them is biden's family relations, or is this something that they thought from the beginning might have been a politically motivated effort. do they know anything about the initial crime here? >> we are early in our own fact finding process on this, we're still fit in our way through this, although we really know about the burglary is that there was a burglary, it was in 2020, personal items were taken so things beyond this were taken. we don't know what else. was there, and when a representative of the biden family went to the justice department in october of 2020, they reported that this burglary it happened in the course of explaining to them what was going on, and that we investigation began in october of 2020, before election day of that year. as you are reading off that was under attorney general william barr, who also opened up the matt gates investigation in this period of time as well. >> and michael, you and your colleagues mentioned today in your reporting that this investigation is being handled by fbi agents, but also by prosecutors who work on public corruption matters. is this a public corruption matter, because of the way the purloined items were used, apparently to try to cause some sort of political harm to president biden, or is it a public corruption matter for some other reason. do we know?
