is gearing up for a third white house bid as he dolls out midterm endorsements, hires aides in iowa and boasts media interviews what he sees as a glide path to victory in a 2024 gop primary. you will not hear his speech live on msnbc. only if he makes news based in fact. so, again, we will not air his speech live. but tonight it is bound to be a trumptastic festivus of lies about the election he lost, lies he used to inspire january's attack on the capitol, and by the sound of his supporters who spoke with nbc, that insurrection has not swayed their support for trump. and facts not swaying their belief that joe biden lost in 2020. >> you can't even try to convince me that the election was in any way fair, there wasn't election laws that were truly being followed. >> we're out here obviously to support the real winner of the last election. >> are you saying that jokingly? >> seriously. >> we're not going to take it anymore. i see a civil war coming. i do. i see a civil war coming, especially with these mandates. >> so there you have a very scary prediction. the result of donald trump's lies. and tonight the crowd will also hear from iowa republican senator chuck grassley after grassley criticized trump's words and actions on january 6th. in about an hour, the senator who just announced his bid for re-election is going to stand side by side with the man he once condemned, using that man's base to win an eighth senate term. and understand why grassley is cozying up to trump, just check the data. a new poll of iowa republicans show 9 of 10 approve of the former president. that is ten points higher than their approval of senator grassley. so to win as a republican in iowa, it appears you need trump. and to have trump, you have to be okay with helping spread his big lie. in helping do that is a new wave of gop-led states working to mimic that fort lauderdale cyber ninjas fraud it. malcolm nance, i need your reaction from a trump supporting seeking to nbc news tonight in iowa. take a listen. >> i think the republicans are about as weak as they possibly could be in congress. maybe six that are worth their shall. ted cruz, mike lee, rand paul, and two or three others. the rest are the "r" just the same as the democrats. they've been there too long. they're establishment. they don't care about the american people because they're in their elite little tower. and so we're just sick of it, you know? we're not going to take it anymore. i see a civil war coming. i do. i see civil war coming. >> malcolm, what do you think when you hear her say there is a civil war coming? >> you know, a year ago i was on bill maher's show and i predicted the united states was heading into a multiyear insurgency. within 60 days, we had the insurrection where they tried to overthrow the u.s. government and start a coup d'état. we thought they were going to be chastised. they weren't. the republican party established their solidarity around them, and from that point on, they have quinn up theled down. they are looking at the use of force at some point here. you know, i've seen many you insurgencies, i have trapped terrorists all over the world. what we're looking at here, first, is a political reform in which disagreements will be moved from out of the halls of power and into the streets to an armed people power movement. it will be paramilitary, the bully political, but it will be headed by donald trump and you're seeing the first steps of this. >> what does it mean that you have chuck grassley who spoke against trump's actions on january 6th now wanting trump to stump for him in iowa? >> it means that the republican party has been hijacked by trump. he's the inevitable frankenstein creation of decades of white grievance, which is going to turn into a white riot. we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore. they're going to be weaponized and we should expect violence. so chuck grassley -- the majority of republicans voted not to certify the 2020 election. they knew that biden won, but they realized that the base believes the big lie. the majority of republican voters believe the big lie. many of them now are swayed by qanon, which is a national threat by the fbi. what they're doing with the fraudit is to degrade our democracy and degrade a third of this country's belief in democracy and telling them that this country is being stolen from you, it's been taken from you. so what do you have to do? you have to fight back, literally fight back. five people died in the january 6th violent insurrection, and people said, oh, once biden wins, they'll moderate. they have not. they have doubled down, tripled down. and what we'll see is violence in the streets, a weaponized, radicalized minority that will be unleashed against democracy and we still haven't taken it seriously or called it the f-word, fascism. >> there have been lots of times when i missed sitting around a table with all of you, but none more than when raj is talking and i hear you, you, you so tell me it is what you wanted to add. >> i just finished a 120,000-word book on this subject where we're going to be in the middle of what i call titus, the trump insurgency in the united states. he's looking at changing the form of government here. you know, bill maher said it just last night. now that he's come around to my point of view, he said that they intend to overthrow government here in 2024, no election will ever be legitimate again unless they win it, and we have descended to authoritarianism. this is the embrace of fascism. i called it, you know, that he was part of an axis of autocracies, that's what trump's job was, to bring america away from liberal democracy to an unliberal democracy and then smash it. this is exactly what's happening and america is at a desperately, desperately serious moment in its history. if we lose in 2022, if the republicans take power in the house of representatives, it's all finished. >> jean, i want to bring you into this conversation about something you and i have talked about, which is the xenophobia of the the country republican party. when you hear that trump supporter in iowa talking about some of those gop members who have carried trump's water, not only on january 6th, not only on the results of 2020, but also all his lies about immigrants, still saying even they are not going far enough, what does that tell you about where that base is now? >> i mean, this is the logical outcome of white supremacy that we saw throughout the trump administration and the normalization of white extremism, the delivering of white inciting like we saw in el paso where 20 people were killed by a white terrorist echoing the rhetoric about a, quote, unquote, invasion and the, quote, unquote, existential threat that they say is posed by immigration. it's no coincidence that we are now seeing a complete normalization of the white supremacist replacement theory and this idea that completely deliberately misdefines the word replacement which implies a catastrophic subtraction, a catastrophic eras sure. that's population growth, there's no such thing as replacement. but there's been this normalization because the logical outcome -- what they're trying to do is inspire people to commit acts of violence and to sujt entire groups of people. >> there are a lot of they and them. but let's talk about the single individual who had power in this, former president donald trump. i want to turn to the final days of his presidency. a new report from the senate judiciary committee outlining nine times trump pressured the justice department to overturn the 2020 election results. malcolm, what does accountability look like to prevent a future president from behaving this way? because we basically know what happened. the real question is, how do we make sure this never happens again? >> well, you know, we are at an inflection point where i know joe biden has come in, he wanted to be the person who could try to unify the country. but where i think fundamentally some of the democratic leadership have a real problem understanding the nature of the threat that we're dealing with is the fact that they want to be inclusive, they want to be the group that will -- how do i put it -- that will, you know, govern for the entire nation. you have a very solid 30% pushing 40% who don't want to governor. they want to rule the 60% of this country that didn't vote for donald trump. and they have now gotten to the point where they are willing to arm themselves and fight for this. they believe in the lie. and by trump being the leader of this insurgency -- an insurgency, by the way, is a series of insurrections, both political and military, is what we're up against. by donald trump fostering the big lie, he understands he's building a trump regime. these people believe in the belief -- in the structure, the ideology of the trump regime. i wrote in this book that's coming out next year that there's four phases to this. first is deny, then it is attack, which is the phase they're in right now. if they take power, it will become revenge. and then after that thereby terrorist and paramilitary fear component of their insurgency. this happens in every insurgency. they overthrow the existing power structure. our problem is we're trying to cut deals with insurgents. this isn't the taliban. this is a variation of the irish republican army and irish sectarianism and their political body in the united states. this is just not viable. what is it going to take? well, it's probably going to take an act of massive violence, larger than el paso, before anyone gains attention. but when we an attorney general that doesn't believe any of this is going on. the justice department could be nipping all of this at the bud by taking aggressive action, putting people in jail for the january 6th insurrection, and showing there is a zero tolerance for any and future violence. >> raj, i'm running out of time, but i'm going to let you that the last word. >> we need the majority to flex. if we don't flex and stand up and organize and demand more from our elected leaders, the democrats are going to get us minority rule. they're playing for all or nothing and they're going to radicalize and january 6th will be a rough draft they're going to perfect for 2022 and 2024. so lets get off our asses, move, let's have the justice department crack some heads figuratively, and let's empower the grassroots movements to vote, vote, vote, because we're literally fighting for our democracy. >> very important use of figuratively. thank you all. next, the cost of care and why it is dragging down a generation of parents. i'll talk to a single mom whose kids have special needs about why support from the biden agenda is absolutely critical. later, from the classroom to a jail cell. the arrests of children in tennessee. we're covering a very disturbing trend in one county. and tomorrow, do not miss our special hour of "american voices" latinos inside the white house in honor of hispanic heritage month. i sat down with members of the white house. that is tomorrow night, 7:00 p.m. eastern, right here on msnbc. but now, to richard lui standing by with a look at the other big stories we're watching this hour. richard? >> there are places where child care just doesn't exist, quality care. there are limited number of spaces and workers that are available to work in the centers. so finding a space available for two babies, finding care that was full time that allowed me to go back to work, those were extreme hurdles. during the pandemic i actually lost my children's father, so i became a single-income earner trying to cover the cost of this and it is extremely costly right now to care for children. >> thank you so much for sharing that with us, celeste. jess, the reason celeste's story is so important beyond the fact that it is a lived life experience and we value that in and of itself, is that it articulates what the need is here. we're talking about policies and very often it's easy to get lost in the policy part of this, but when we talk about the three pieces, when we talk about universal child care, when we talk about paid family leave, when we talk about the extended tax credit, all of that is to make sure that someone like celeste can do what she needs to do in this america. what happens if you start pulling those threads and you say, well, choose among them, just choose one of those three, just one of those three will be enough. why is that not good enough, jess? >> we should be able to care for people from what we call the cradle to the grave at the domestic workers. we want to be able to make sure that no matter where you are in your life, you have quality, affordable care that doesn't exploit anyone in the process, not the people who need the care, and not the people who are providing the care. if you take any of that away, what happens is not that, you know, the problem goes away. it's that the solutions become so much harder for people. and so you have a family like celeste, i couldn't say it any better than her, who needed care when there was maternity leave and challenges in the family because of folks passing away, when she had to go back to work. all those situations require a different set of solutions to be able to provide, but it's for the same person in the same family that needs her government to be with her every step of the away. >> i want you to react to the same thing, and that is that last week you had senator manchin saying keeping the human infrastructure bill as it is will move us toward, quote, an entitlement society. what does that say to you, celeste? >> let me tell you this. i'm the last person who's looking to be entitled to anything. in the middle of the pandemic, after the loss of my children's father, i reskilled and became a software developer. i landed a full-time job. i am making an income that should allow me to live the america dream. but with the cost of child care, that is just not my reality right now. that is not. and i don't want to be on any of your systems. i want to get up and go to work and use the brain in my head. >> yeah, i don't know, jess, how i could ask you to follow that up, so i'm going to actually rephrase the question, which is, i think sometimes what gets lost is we're talking about the u.s. economy. when it comes to child care specifically, we're talking about something that experts have called a failed market, the market is not working. it is not working for the domestic workers you work with. it is not working for parents and caregivers who rely on that care. it is working for literally no one. is there a way to are ephraim this and say, listen, we're not talking about entitlement, we're talking about keeping the u.s. economy up and running. >> yeah. i mean, i wish i could talk to senator manchin and tell him about the caregivers in his state who really do need the support. and i think what's really important when we talk about the care economy is we're actually talking about the modern economy, the feminist economy, the answers to where people have challenges right now that works there are two people in the home who need to work, and people are waiting later to have kids and they're living longer, so there's a need for elder and child care. that there aren't, you know, big villages of people as we used to have where folks lived close together to care for your family if you get sick and then actually parents are the ones who usually need to do that. this is how we address the economy as it is right now. provide people the relief that they need right now, and ensure that people have the ability to have a family and thrive in that environment instead of doing everything they can just to get by. and i think that's what i can get bhierngsd all the domestic workers that i work for can get behind, and that feels like something senator manchin can get behind. i want to ask him why can't you get behind people being able to afford to contribute to this society and care for their families in a way that makes sense for both. >> what is it you think folks on capitol hill miss about the reality of what it is you are going through? >> the reality is that when a person does put they must out there and go out for employment every day, they're making the choice of whether they're going to pay for quality care for their children so that they can afford to go to work. that is the one thing that does not make sense to me. can i afford to go to work? (vo) singing, or speaking. reason, or fun. daring, or thoughtful. sensitive, or strong. progress isn't either or progress is everything. now to tennessee and a report that uncovers one county's staggered history with children being jailed. an investigative report by national public radio and propublica lays out a case from 2016 when four young black girls were arrested at school accused of not stopping a fistfight between two small boys. but police were not there to arrest the two boys seen fighting in the video. instead, they were there to arrest four black girls they believe were seen in a youtube video yelling at the two boys. one of the girls, only 8 years old. police went on to arrest 11 black children in all, all 11 of their families sued in federal court. all 11 won their cases and received settlements. but according to that propublica report, what happened in 2016 was not an exception in the county. it was the norm. kids for years jailed illegally by a judge in rutherford county. a judge who says kids must face consequences. data reveals how pernicious this problem is. propublica reports out of all cases referred to juvenile courts in tennessee, only 5% of cases led to a child being detained. in rutherford county, that number is 48%. with me now, senior report with national public radio and contributed to propublica's report. thank you so much for being with us. break down for us what is going on in this county and how they were getting away with jailing kids. >> yeah. like i said you said, these arrests took place in rutherford county, which, as our story outcomes, had been illegally arresting and jailing kids for years all under the watch of its juvenile court judge, donna scott davenport. she had directed law enforcement on her process for arresting children, basically arrest children, transport them to the detention center for screening, then file charging papers. in other words, every child arrested, even for minor things like truancy, were being taken to the juvenile detention center, the judge told law enforcement. the other part of this is davenport also footnoted county's head jailer who has been in power almost as long as the judge davenport since 2000, and she had her own screening process for children called the filter system that was pulling in really large numbers of children into the detention center in violation of the law. i can get into more detail. the story gets into lots of details. it's complicated, but in essence it was these twonings tandem. >> one of the details i want to get into, the kids arrested over the fight that was on a youtube video were charged of, quote, criminal responsibility for conduct of another. that's a charge that doesn't exist in tennessee law. all 11 of the kids arrested for being jailed under a filter system. how does something like this happen in the first place? >> it's unlike anything we've seen before. it's a whole unique property. it's kind of rare that we see something that's not based on a book or a movie or preexisting tv show or comic book. it's a whole unique property from the characters to the story line to the aesthetics. now on top of that, as you mentioned, there wasn't a lot of promotion for it, but there was a ton of word of mouth online. you see memes made. people who can't get over the series, who are completely enraptured with it. that was a huge factor in people wanting to know what is going on with this. i want to get involved in this show, too. i want to know what everyone is talking about. i think those two things kind of made a perfect marriage in a perfect storm of people needing to watch one of netflix's biggest shows ever. >> something that strikes me about this is that throughout the pandemic, this question of are we all going to want to escape by watching things that are fluffy and fun or are we going to be open to you know, giving ourselves up to a different type of distopia? your sense of why this has become so popular. >> the beauty of sign fiction and horror when done well captures the fears and anxieties of the moment. that's why i think it's a universal phenomenon. in addition to being brilliantly cast, well directed, well acted, suspenseful and just keeps you on the edge of your seat. you have no idea who's going to make it. it hits you in the gut with some of these emotional episodes like episode six. i won't reveal further. it talks to the moment where so many feel like they can't get ahead. capitalism has crushed them. they're living the basement apartments. still stuck below. the reason squid game is so powerful, these characters, not that much of a spoiler, once they realize the nature of these deadly games, they still come back because they're so desperate in their situation. it talks about income inequality. even though it's a perverse fantasy, there's no way this could happen, in the back of your mind, this could happen. maybe there's some really wealthy people, you have to compete to the death and you'll win $38 million. people are so downtrodden right now, i'll participate in the squid games. you think to yourself, if i was doing the squid games, how long would i last? i recommend you see it. >> it's pretty impressive that you can trump the fictional distopian reality by injecting another. this in the context of the way in which we're watching netflix have a lot of success in non-english products, right, that we really are thinking of a global audience and it's interesting, you have lots of people in the united states watching these shows that were not produced in the united states. what does that tell you about the industry at large?
