The companys plan to apply for authorization from the Food And Drug administration by The End of this month, now obviously, as a parent of two kids who would be eligible for the vaccine the fda approves under invested in this. I know a lot of you are too. To run a talk to the former Acting Head of the center for Disease Control and prevention, about this and what it means in just a bit. But throughout this whole year, since january, weve had this we are drawing good news bad News Situation on the vaccine. The news about the vaccine themselves, from a scientific standpoint and their Efficacy Rate has been really good. Now its true, the efficacy of some of the vaccines in terms, preventing infection, have taken a bit of a hit with the delta variant. But, they have held up incredibly well in protecting against serious illness and death. Places that are highly vaccinated like, vermont which have been a model for battling covid with the republican governor in charge, i will add, vermont is already seen that protection inaction. More than 87 of the eligible population in vermont has received at least one dose, and as a result they did not see a huge New Wave of cases hospitalization, and that from delta. So far they have been spared the misery of waves of deaths that weve seen in states like florida and mississippi. Mississippi in fact, now has the highest rate of covid deaths per capita in the country. Surpassing the states hardest hit at the very beginning of the pandemic, states like New Jersey and New York. And youll remember those northeastern states, they had the most intense completely unchecked out converts. When the virus first came over from europe in there was practically no testing available, hardly any preventative messages like mask or social distancing, certainly not vaccines. New York City alone recorded more than 18,000 deaths from early march to early may of 2020. Overtime, other states have suffered serious outbreaks moved up in those rankings if you can call it that. States like louisiana and arizona, but the Delta Wave this Hour But Mississippi over the top. And a huge part of that, its a lot of complicated factors, we theyre quite port relatively to other states, but a big part is vaccine resistance. Just 50 of those eligible in mississippi received at least one dose. This weekend the republican governor, tate reeves, went on jake tappers show to defend his record. And you have to admit, first of all, the truth about vaccines and the protection the offer. The best thing that americans can do, number one, is to talk to their doctor about potentially getting the vaccine because in our state some 89 of those hospitalized and some 87 of those deaths are coming from those who are unvaccinated. Okay so, like many republicans, tate reeves, also in the same interview, took the opportunity to raid against the joe Biden Administration, with employers more than 100 employees either regularly test their Test Staff once a week or require them to get vaccinated. This is an attack by the president on Hardworking Americans and hardworking mississippians, who he wants to choose between getting a jab in their arm, and their ability to feed their families. Okay just once again i know keeping on this, its not a choice from you getting a jab in their, arm or to feed their families, thats in the policies. But, The Point here, from reeves is that the vaccine is good, it saves peoples lives, and protects people from their it lists, but also the people that we hate, like Joe Biden like him, and they want you to take it, and therefore the vaccine might actually be bad. And dont fall for the truck. Dont let them make you take it. With that Cognitive Dissonance has likely caused onto a thousands of american lives. It was political scientists call negative partisanship, at its most extreme. It is a Driving Factor in the pandemic right now. Our Vaccination Rate was one of the highest earlier this year, we were the hair in the tours, and now we are the lowest. And its not because we dont have the vaccines. But other g7 countries have caught up and surpassed us, we have been dealing with this intense resistance. That was actually perfectly articulated in a random piece from a right Wing Website that got a lot of attention this week. And in it, the author actually accused liberals in the media, and Joe Biden and, doctor felt she of deliberately looking to manipulate trump supporters into not getting vaccinated. Because quote in a country where elections are decides did on razor thin margins doesnt benefit one side if their opponent simply drop that . No one wants to cave to them so we dont. And whats the result . Theyre all vaccinated and were not. And when you look at the numbers the only numbers that matter which is whos dying, is overwhelmingly the unvaccinated who are dying. And they have just manipulated millions in their political enemies into the unvaccinated can. Thats the argument, the argument is that liberals want conservatives that. So they are telling them to get vaccinated, knowing that in so doing they will make conservatives less likely to get the vaccine, and thus more danger. As a liberal myself i will speak for myself, i would go to a Matter Rally and sleep in a Dunk Tank tomorrow, if it meant that every american got vaccinated the next. In fact hes taken a lot of actions that could [inaudible] vaccinations. Like banding customers to including Cruise Ship companies. Think about that. And then of course Ron Desantis had a serious outbreak on his hands this summer. And so the way that he tried to kind of thread this needle, this weird ideological needle was to go in All In on whats called Monoclonal Antibodies. Now youve heard about this before. The Monoclonal Antibodies are a promising treatment data have shown that they really help people, its all a crystal clear yet. But its subjective. And if somebody has covid it is great to get them effective treatment as fast as possible, and early as possible. But Theres Something just bizarre about the ideological affiliation of these Monoclonal Antibodies. Which dont have any inheritance political valence. We but the same people who say vaccines are suspect are All In on the antibodies, this is a treatment, just be clear here, thats administer either by injection or intervening inslee, it is authorized under an Emergency Use Authorization from the fda. Not full authorization. It is new. And it cost about 2000 Dollar per dose. All of the arguments that antivaccines make against the vaccine are true of this treatment. And yet because its not the vaccine and probably because Donald Trump used it and promoted and Donald Trumps friend all got access to it, because it means, i guess at a distract level that covid is treatable so not a big deal. The model we Monoclonal Antibodies have become an ideological space. So what you get it florida governor Ron Desantis pushing it in a twoweek in the head of a delta state, the governor do we did 11 times about Monoclonal Antibodies treatments and zero times about vaccines. You know chris, i would say im cautiously optimistic and the reason i say cautious is because i never like to make a judgment based on a company press release. Let the company share, is really encouraging. They found that young children, so 5 to 11 year old children, milan did a strong immune response with one third of the dose that adults are getting. It is not surprising, young children tend to respond better, more effectively to vaccines then older people. And they found that at that low dose the number of children who had Side Effects was quite low. And those Side Effects were mild. It is going to be really important to let the fda do their thing, but their Advisory Committee do their thing. Because while the severity of this infection, while youre really old, while you have medical conditions, is quite high. The severity when youre young is quite low. And so you want to make sure that if you youre recommending this to kid, and pediatrician or parent, this is really important to, i want to make sure that the Due Diligence is done and it is truly safe. And thats an important point and i think it connects to something that weve seen in terms of Vaccine Updates. Your Point Being that theres the risk of severe illness, hospitalization. And then theres the risk of whatever risk might be in the vaccine. We think its minimal but not 0. 00. And the connection between those two is going to be part of the calculation the fda is making. And in this case we know that 5 to 12 year old have a lower risk, or 5 to 11 have a lower risk than older age. And its interesting because weve seen not great uptake in adolescence so far. So 42. 4 of those 12 to 17 years have received, a dose of covid vaccines and. Granted that happened later but i want to know what you think about Vaccine Updates in that context. The authorization that theres going to be the messaging about getting kids vaccinated. I would expect that if the fda doesnt Emergency Use Authorization on this, that the uptake will be lower than what weve seen for adolescents. I think that there are a lot of parents, the day that pfizer send it forward, are fewer than 3000 children. And i think that there is going to be a lot of parents who say let my child have, it i want them to go to school, protected. Im really concerned about. This were seeing 300 children hospitalized each week, we see nearly 500 children died from this. Weve seen thousands of children who developed an unusual inflammatory syndrome. So there will be parents who want their children to be first in line to get. This i think that theres gonna be a big group of parents who say, i want to see how this is tolerated when its been given to hundreds of thousands of children. Were you might see a less common Side Effect appear. And as a pediatrician. Im going to want to listen and really address peoples questions and concerns with respect. When you look at the impact in children, we see the same desperate impact and children in terms of black and brown children being hit harder than white children. And its really important that you treat parents respect, you let people make an informed decision, you recognize that people will be on a different timeline around. That if we can do a better job of removing politics from young children, and children immunization, i dont know if we, can that would be a terrific thing. It was striking to me also just a dosing here. And also the way its developed. I think we think of vaccination as a thing that you do as a kid except for the seasonal flu shot. Thats normally how it works, thats all weve implemented, it here you have vaccinations that goes to adults and not being moved on to kids. And we have a third of the dose, i guess here, is that a common ratio in the world of immunology, is that how this works . The ratio is going to be different, but the idea that a different ages youre going to see a different amount of material that needed to get an immune response. Thats not unusual. You may recall that over the past couple of years for elderly people, the flu shot, they developed a higher dose flu shot. And that was a recognition that the older you get the last reactive your Immune System will be. And what you want to do is give us a little as you need to get the kind of immune response that you want. Unlike the trials in adult where they did charles to look at prevention of disease, and hospitalization and death, these are doing. That what theyre doing is looking to see, do you get the same level of antibodies. And if you get that same lamented bodies, then it should give you that protection. We wont know until this is used in real world. That concept holds true. It should because it holds true for so many different. Vaccines i see what youre seeing the depended variant is the antibody level, as opposed to Illness Hospitalization or fatality. Thats the thing that theyre measuring, thats the thing that theyre going to go to the fda on, Thats Something that the data said its going to talk. Gun and so the video itself, i was just shocked, its not something that should have really been told to report. Yes this is the first time in this been disclosed as my understanding. Would can you do if you are a member of congress on something like this happens . When i worked on the hill, when i was a report on the hill, a decade ago, most members walked around without security. Theyre just like you could see them on the restaurant you could see them on the capitol subway. Has that persist, or has there been changes to that . That is still the same. That was kind of the [inaudible] of the story. Theres not nearly a enough Capitol Police to give them a number of security detail. So theyre not in washington, and theyre not in the capital complex, how would they feel safe . And so when she received this video she reached out to Capitol Police. And they probably contacted the fbi. She contacted her local police and there is not an immediate easy answer for investigation that goes into. It right and you also the members of congress you dont want them all talking to people and interacting with the public, going to County Fair and things like that. We i mean thats just a shocking increase. I think one question i have for you is that partly a function of the ease of Social Media and how people can just say really nasty gnarly things . I think hearing a lot of threats that might have just been guys blowing some steam off at the bar in the past. But now its a lot easier to reach a member of congress, and find their phone number, or their twitter handle. And its about things that are looking at the various Court Cases that were brought out in the last decade, over and over again people would say in the defense, while i didnt really mean it. I was just letting off steam. But harassing a federal official, threatening a federal official is a felon. The punishable by up to six years in prison. We should also know that theres the context here that the Attack And Gaby giffords, when she was doing that in her district, the gunman who attacked a republican softball team. Intent gravely injures a man who took your rehab, he was hospitalized, he was shot multiple time, other members. Also there is the Crowd Overrun meaning january six. The context here is that this is not some preposterous remote scenario for these members. But all of the sudden they back to being socalled physically responsible. Its ridiculous. The Debt Ceiling relieves the bill that the country has already incurred. Theyll go over the senate with the house to be passed by a filibuster proof majority, so you have to find 50 republican votes, and Mitch Mcconnell is saying absolutely not, were all Gonna Vote against you. Thats what hes saying, but i think is front on wall street, and the wealthy on the wall off across the country, do not want to see a default in the stock market, and the economy crashing. So i am not convinced that mr. Mcconnell is doing anything about bluffing.
