It comes at a critical moment where covid cases among the youngest and most vulnerable are Soaring nationwide. Doctors treating Kids Sick with covid reflecting on this point in the pandemic. Its scary. Its sad. And its exhausting. Its sad that Some in Society have not prioritized children. I thought that was a place where we could all come together. We start with this huge news from pfizer. What it could mean in the fight against the pandemic. Gabe gutierrez has been following the Pfizer Announcement for us. Hes outside a hospital in Spokane Washington where hospitals are turning away patients from Neighboring Idaho. And cases continue to rise among children. And i alSo want to bring in dr. Derek cast. Hes an emergency medical physician. Doctor, always good to have you. Gabe, lets start with you. Pfizer says the data shows the vaccine is safe and effective for children between 5 and 11. What more have we learned . Hey there, craig. Yes, as you said, this is potentially pivotal news for parents across the country. Ive been waiting for Some Sort of information on vaccines in younger children. And yes, this morning that news from pfizer, the company saying New Data shows that children 5 to 11 years old, this Vaccine Twodose Vaccine is safe for that age group. It is the first trial of its kind. Now this trial included more than 2000 children and they were given smaller doses. And the vaccine given to children 12 and older. Earlier today we heard from a Company Representative on the today show. Take a listen. We intend to submit the data by The End of the month. And then, of course, it will be up to the fda to review that data. We looked at several doses early on in children. And we determined that onethird of the Adult Dose works just right for children to minimize the potential for Side Effects and provide the potential for protection. So, again, pfizer now submitting this New Data to the fda for emergency use authorization. The company alSo says, craig, that it plans to have results for an even younger age group, children under five, by The End of the year. Now, switching to where i am right now in spokane, washington, we toured an icu here late yesterday. And this is one of the hospitals that is struggling to keep up with demand essentially. Because in Neighboring Idaho where there have been more lax restrictions due to covid, they are now having a huge surge there. There have been many Patient Transfer Requests to Eastern Washington where not far from the State Line here. And this particular Hospital Multicare Hospital says that just over the weekend it had three patients die in its relatively small icu within a 12hour period. Its now having to deny about twothirds of the Patient Transfer Requests from out of state because they say theres just not enough bed space. We spoke with several of the Health Care workers here that say theyre frustrated because this is happening a year and a half into this pandemic. Craig, this is the worst theyve seen it throughout this entire pandemic. And again, there is frustration here among Health Care workers thAt This is still happening. And again, theyre having to turn down Some of the patients from a neighboring state. How could they not be frustrated . Gabe for us in washington state. Dr. Cass, you a unique perspective. Youve had the virus. Youre a parent. What do other parents who are watching or listening on Sirius Satellite Radio need to know about this New Data and the seriousness of the Approval Process by the fda . Well, i think they need to understand the process is working. Were following the data and listening to the scientists whose job it is to interpret the data for us. Even me, a parent who is a scientist, a doctor, is not going to make my own decision. Im going to listen to the recommendations from the fda, and im going to follow my doctors orders. My childrens doctors. Im So excited that its about time for us to be able to vaccinate 5 to 11yearolds with an appropriate dose for them, and really get this pandemic under control as we send our kids back to school in a highly dense environment that we really need to keep them safe and in school. Shaq, youre at a childrens hospital. More and more children are being hospitalized. Some are on ventilators as i understand it. What are Health Care workers telling you about the situation there . Theyre saying its the worst that it has ever been, and craig, excuse me from reading. I have Some new numbers that just came into my inbox here. Across the state 32 children are in the hospital fighting this virus. Ten of them are in critical care. Of those ten, five of them are on ventilators. Youre not just talking about a virus thats impacting the general population, but it is really targeting children, and most of them, the doctor told me here, every single patient that shes seen At The Pediatric Ward has been unvaccinated. I spoke to one of the patients. I want you to hear a little bit of my conversation with christian, 17 years old. Hes been in this hospital for more than three weeks At This point. Was tested positive over a month ago. Listen to my conversation with him and his dad, anthony. Some are like yeah, its all right n im not getting the vaccine. Imlike ill see you in a couple months then, because im not going anywhere near that group of people no more. They got me sick and in the hospital. This is not a joke. You know, i thought it was when we first came out. And after this, t not a joke. This coronavirus is serious. And it doesnt care, you know, if youre a child, an adult, it dont care what color you are, your religion. It dont care. Reporter you heard them both mention that it was the reality of being there in the hospital that really changed the entire perspective for them. And craig, to put this in context, the state of South-carolina'>South Carolina last week saw a Record Number of cases. A Record Number of hospitalizations. And despite that you still have an effective ban by the State Legislatures on schools for forcing any mask mandate. Politicians on both sides of the aisle At This point saying they want to reconsider that ban, but when you listen to the families, when you listen to the patients, you get a sense of why and how serious of an impact this Delta Variant is having not just on adults but alSo on kids who are fighting this virus. Shaq, not to put you on the spot, but that young man is 17. He qualifies for the vaccine. Any idea why he didnt get the shot . Reporter you know, in our conversation he said he didnt see it as a serious thing. He said he was joking about this virus up until the point when he tested positive. He said he didnt take it seriously until he woke up in the hospital. Hes been in the hospital more than three weeks At This point, and hell tell you most of thAt Time, he was not even awake. He was on a ventilator. He was incubated. His dad said when he finally got out of the icu, he couldnt keep himself up. He is getting to the point where he can walk about 400 feet now without losing his breath. Hes getting better, but the idea is he didnt take this seriously. He was joking about it even after he tested positive. But he says that was a dramatic mistake, and ill tell you both, he and his father have now been vaccinated. They got their first dose about a week ago. Yeah. I bet. All right. Shaq, thank you. Dr. Kass, covid cases up about 240 since july. Being back in school is a risk in and of itself. You listen to what just happened there from that 17yearold in charleston. And then what happened in new York City during the first week of in Son-school'>PerSon School last week. Take a listen. Within four days, we had 812 positive cases over 600 Classroom Closures and one entire School Building already closed. And again, i mean, theyre wearing masks in new York City schools. Dr. Kass should that and what we heard from shaq before, should that change the calculus for parents who are on the fence of vaccinating their children At This moment in the pandemic . I think if parents are still on the fence, it should change the calculus. A lot of the cases found in the new York City School System were found from before school started. These are likely not transmissions that happened in the School Building but people undiagnosed before they came into the school. So i dont think that really indicates the schools are a Spreader Environment right now. New York City has strong Mask Policies and high vaccination rates, especially among teachers. I think we need to hold on. But i think it is time to get children vaccinated. If your child is over 12 years old, please get them vaccinated today. And if your child is 5 to 11, go the day its approved. It is really important that our children get vaccinated to protect each other and the children younger than them from getting hospitalized or sick or even having the symptoms of covid for the rest of their lives. News just in from the White House a short time ago. Perhaps youve already heard it. Foreign travelers now going to be required to be fully vaccinated and test negative to fly into this country starting in early november. For vaccinated foreign nationals, this replaces current Travel Ban from about 33 countries. Any unvaccinated americans returning to the united states will be subjected to stricter testing requirements. Is november too far off for that . Look, i think that any change in this direction is good. We got to get it in place. We have to have the ability to enforce the policies. Because policies that we cant enforce arent useful. I think if were saying november, thats great. It lifts the ban from other countries and allows people to come in who are fully vaccinated. We dont know a little bit of the data of whats qualified as unvaccinated. This may indicate a step toward requiring Vax Naxs for domestic travelers. I think it would be a welcome addition for a lot of people in this country vaccinated, looking to travel as safely as possible among the states of the united states. Thank you all of you. We are following Breaking News in the Gabby Petito case. Right now the fbi searching a home belonging to the parents of per fiance. Brian laundrie who is still missing after returning home from a Road Trip without Gabby Petito last week. Brians family says he hasnt been seen since tuesday. The fbi announced gabbys remains are believed to have been found in wyoming in a national park. The body was found more than a week after Petitos Family reported her missing. We are in north port, florida where the couple lived. Katie, last Week Police named laundrie as a perSon of interest. Family reported him missing on friday. What do we know about why the fbi is now searching his Parents House . Reporter well, it seems, craig, they are setting their sights now on the family, because the family gave them information that laundrie was here where we are standing at a reserve vast reserve in florida where he lived, where he often liked to hike. They said last Tuesday Laundrie said to them he was going to be coming here, going to be going for a hike, and later on friday they mentioned thAt They had not seen him since then. So over the weekend police were searching this 25,000 Acre Reserve by air, by foot with dogs looking for any indication of Brian Laundrie. They did not find anything. This morning called off that search saying they will not be exhausting anymore reSources in this area. ThAt They felt like theyd exhausted every avenue they could, and very Soon after that we find thAt The fbi is searching that parents Laundries Parents home. We know thAt They are still there. There is an active scene. This is a court ordered Search Warrant. They are probably trying to figure out if parents knew anything, whAt They knew, whAt They told police, whAt They didnt tell police about his where abouts. And obviously the hunt is now on. The pressure is now increasing as we dont have full confirmation thAt That is gabbys body, but likely well find it is. Craig . Heres this is a live look, by the way, At The Laundrie Home in north port, florida. As the fbi conducts this search, you can see that reporters and cameras who have had the symbol there, katie, are we expecting any Sort of update Soon from Law Enforcement . You know, a Law Enforcement on this end have been communicating with regular you laity. They let us Know The Search was not going to continue. They exhausted every possibility here. They did spend two days here. I think theyre at a point where they need new information about where he might be, and what his Parents Involvement might be. They were obviously the ones to give them this information, but the fact thAt They gave them the information after hed been missing for nearly 72 hours by itself raises Some questions. So i think they are probably going to be turning that hot light on the family to find out exactly whAt They know. Do they think Brian Laundrie is still alive . I think At This point theyre unsure about his where abouts. What we do know is that hes had a couple days. He was only a perSon of interest. He didnt have to surrender a passport. He wasnt under arrest. Airlines and such werent notified on banning his travel, So hes been last seen On Tuesday. Thats nearly a week later. Hes had Some run time if he was trying to get away. I dont know if they have any indication as to whether he is a harm to himself or they suspect he has harmed himself or he is alive. Like i said, The Pressure is certainly mounting as investigators in wyoming uncover what happened to gabby, and i think an Autopsy Tomorrow will lend a lot more in terms of answers. That Autopsy Report is being conducted tomorrow in wyoming, and it will tell us a cause of death. That could determine future charges for laundrie and exactly whAt They believe his involvement might have been there. Katie in north port, florida where the fbi, again, searching Brian Laundries Family Home there. Well continue to follow that story closely. Were alSo following Breaking News on the Southern border. The secretary of Homeland Security is heading to del rio, texas as we speak. Because thousands of haitian migrants have set up camp there desperate to get into the united states. Well go there. Hes going to be getting an up close look At The latest surge of migrants At The Southern border. The vast majority are from haiti. That country reeling from the devastating earthquake there. Nearly 15,000 migrants are carped out under a bridge. The biden administration has already thrown hundreds of the mrlgts back to portauprince. Julia ainsley is following this story. What more do we know about the Secretarys Trip to the border . We know he should be addressing the media the next couple of hours, craig. And this comes after his own Border Patrol Chief has talked about the Fact Theyve moved about 2 3300 people out of that area. A few of them, probably hundreds of them deported back to haiti. AlSo many just moved to different areas as they tried to alleviate the crowding in this humanitarian situation happening right here under this bridge in del rio. We believe that now the numbers have dropped probably Somewhere to around 11,000. Thats still a huge task. When they process people, what we understand is thAt Those who are priorities for deportation, the first people on the flights out will be single adults, and then families who dont apply for asylum or dont qualify for asylum, they are the first to be deported. Unaccompanied children are allowed to stay in the united states per biden administration policy. As well as Some families who do make claims. Those people will be given court dates and often Ankle Monitors to be tracked until their court dates. For thousands of people, this can still mean deportation. Even if they could have a right under other circumstances to stay in the united states, because the biden administration continues to enforce a Tremp Era Policy that was started to try to curb the spread of the covid pandemic. Julia, keep us posted on this one. Thank you. Quote, a Rubics Cube on steroids. Thats how Virginia Senator Mark warner is describing that lies ahead for democrats in congress this week. His democratic colleagues in the house have just seven days to pass the infrastructure bill. They have just ten days left to reach a deal on the 3. 5 trillion spending plan. Theres alSo the important matter of funding the government by The End of the month. They know, by the way, they have to raise the Debt Ceiling by then or face from Janet Yellen is calling, quote, widespread economic catastrophe. Allie is following all of this. The Senate Parliamentarian just dealt a major blow to the bill. Reporter democrats say theyre going to try again. Top democrats involved in this Immigration Effort released a statement right after we heard from the Senate Parliamentarian. I want to read a piece of it. They say theyre working on alternative proposals and will be holding additional meetings with the Senate Parliamentarian in coming days. Its still likely to be a hard sell. If you read through the reaSoning behind the decision, youll see it becomes at least it seems, less a question of scope in terms of the specific things that democrats are trying to put into this bill, and more a question of the implication and the precedent. Something really caught my attention in the reaSoning where she said changing the law to clear the way to lawful permanent Resident Status is a tremendous and enduring Policy Change that dwarves its budgetary impact. The up shot here being that using this Budget Measure which would allow democrats to go it alone on a Laundry List of Policy Priorities including immigration, the parliamentarian seems to say that kind of Sweeping Change Cannot work when it comes to immigration. It does deal democrats a blow. At the same time, they say theyre going to continue to try again on this. And it comes amid these larger negotiations on what actually is going to be in this reconciliation bill. You and i have been referring to it in shorthand as the 3. 5 trillion bill. Were not even sure were going to be able to call it that for much longer. The overall Price Tag is one of the top things that moderate members of the senate and the house have taken issue with here. Now that lawmakers on both sides of this body are back from summer break, a lot of negotiating and likely a lot of changes as you tick through that Whirlwind List of things they have on their agenda. In new york for the first u. N. General assembly of his presidency, the president stepping back on to the World Stage at a time when his administration is facing major foreign policy crises. First, afghanistan. The fallout there after the pentagon acknowledged it mistakenly targeted innocent civilians in a Drone Strike last month. The family of the civilians are demanding compensation. Then theres the new tension with our oldest ally, france. France accusing the u. S. Of, quote, duplicity, disdain and loss. That coming after the united states took over a multibillion Dollar Submarine Contract for australia. France had already started work on the project. They were initially promised. President alSo facing blowback over his administrations timeline for rolling out Booster Shots for most americans. And alSo rick who is the former undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs. He was alSo a member of the biden transition team. A big thanks to all of you. Mike, the President Meeting with the Secretary General tonight, going to face a lot of the heat over the Drone Strike one would assume. The family of civilians killed speaking out. What Sort of position is the White House in because of this particular crisis . Well, craig, to put it mildly, the president facing a much tougher reception when he heads to new york for the u. N. General assembly than what he received when he was warmly welcomed by americas allies in europe in june for the g7 and for the nato summit. A lot has happened since then, especially as it surrounds afghanistan. The messy, chaotic and ultimately the tragic withdrawal of u. S. Forces there and most recently the admission by the u. S. Of this tragic mistake with the Drone Strike that killed too many innocent civilians there. Complicating the diplomatic efforts. The president is going to new york with specific goals in mind. He wants to show democracies can come together to tackle Some of the biggest challenges our time. Thats going to include a virtual climate summit hes convening on wednesday. A virtual Vaccine Summit on wednesday. Hes alSo focussed on climate in anticipation of the Glasgow Summit in november. Clearly, the kind of in Son-diplomacy'>PerSon Diplomacy this moment demands, we wont see much of that. Its a rather quick trip by the president for new york. Hes meeting with Some of our closest allies, prime Son'>Minister Boris JohnSon of the uk On Tuesday and the Prime Ministers of japan, of india, and australia on friday. We dont know yet about a Phone Call with the french, but well have more to say on that in short time. Kourtney, meanwhile and well come back to the french in a moment. Kourtney, are you hearing anything from the pentagon about how they move forward after a mistake like this in afghanistan . Any changes . Has there been any talk of compensating the family in Some way . Yes, there has. We heard from the commander of u. S. Central command. He said there were discussions about potential with the military payments. Those are condolence payments to families. Thats become Somewhat common place in both Iraq And Afghanistan over the last two decades where when there are civilian casualties, have have been many cases in the past where the u. S. Military compensated the families for their losses with a monetary value. But what we should expect going forward now is secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced a review on friday looking into this event. And we according to Defense Officials ive spoken with, they expect Some disciplinary action to come out of this review. The question is how high will it go and how far will it go . Will we see people fired for this tragic mistake . Ten civilians killed despite the fact thAt The u. S. Military followed a vehicle around who they believed to be driven by an isis bomber. It turns out, in fact, it was a humanitarian Aide Worker who was driving around kabul picking up and dropping off colleagues and the canisters in the vehicle believed to be explosives, they were water canisters. We expect to get information from this review in the coming weeks. It probably wont be quick. And then we expect there could be Some disciplinary action taken from that review. It really is such a terrible tragedy on So many levels. Hard to get your head around how Something like that could happen. And rick, i mean, the u. S. Withdrawal from afghanistan was already a rough patch for the biden administration to say the least. Where does this mistake leave the White House now . How does it fit into the broader story of afghanistan . Well, i would say it just confirms the Rightness And Correctness of evacuating from afghanistan. And the difficulties that u. S. Soldiers face in that country. I mean, you know, the even the administration has admitted the intelligence they had about how long the afghan government would survive and the Efficacy And Power of the afghan military, i mean, our intelligence was not great about that either. And i think thats one of the reaSons that President Biden has always been a skeptic about american boots on the ground in afghanistan, and as tragic as it is, and it is abSolutely tragic and we should get to the bottom of it. I think it only confirms the correctness of that decision. I think it reminds americans of just how messy our engagement in afghanistan was. But, rick, doesnt it alSo or shouldnt it alSo remind americans of the dangers of Drone Warfare . Well, the Defense Department and i think kourtney could back me up on this, makes a distinction between what happened in the wake of our evacuation and the Socalled over the horizon capabilities which is trying to combAt Terrorism where we dont have boots on the ground. What happened in kabul during the evacuation was there was an imminent threAt To american troops, in a very dynamic situation. And that is when mistakes happen. You know, Drone Warfare over the shoulder, over the horizon Drone Warfare against a Terrorist Threat is a much more longterm situation and longterm problem where people have weeks and months and even years to figure out whAt To do. And this was a situation that demanded action within hours. Mike, lets turn to this other issue with france now. Weve already seen Some fallout here. The french government has recalled its u. S. Ambassador. It says for the first time in history. Where do things stand this morning with france . Well, craig, all politics is local. Right . For the french, this announcement last week by the u. S. , by australia, by the uk of a Submarine Deal really did undercut the french president at home. This was a significant commercial deal thAt They felt they had in place with the australians. France believing thAt The u. S. Really came in here and undercut them. This seems to be an issue of poor communication among an alliance that is obviously critical because the goal here is all about constraining china. And thats really a misstep here thAt The president has to now address. Now, the french Foreign Minister is going to be attending the united Nations Secretary of state Tony Blinken may have Some in perSon meetings there today. But there is reporting about a Phone Call that could be taking place between macron, the french president , and President Biden in the coming days. That would be a significant step to try to break the tension here and potentially get back to normalizing the relations here and having the ambassador come back to the u. S. Clearly the french feel burned and its up to the president to really reassure an ally. There was a close kinship on display in cornwall and the united kingdom a few months ago. The president needs to fix that. Sure. I mean, weve been besties with the french forever. I mean, obviously not forever. But rick, i mean, in this situation what could the administration have done differently to prevent such a public dustup with our oldest friend . Well, Some of it is a little bit of drama. The french wanting to seem deeply offended. You know, as mike says, this is a domestic issue for macron. This was Something that was helpful to the economy. Again, the australians say and the White House says that we let the french know in advance. The australian Prime Minister said as long ago as five or six months ago, he had communicated to the french thAt They were concerned about how up to date the french technology was. France has nuclear powered submarines. They didnt offer them to the australians. And i think over the last terms of this agreement, the chinese have become even more aggressive in the indo pacific, and the australian Prime Minister was looking for the best technology that was available. So i think that was the rationale for the decision. Kourtney, rick, big thanks to both of you. Mr. Memoli, i want to come back to you later in the hour. Dont go anywhere. This morning a longtime cfo of the Trump Organization Allen Weisselberg was in a new York City courtroom, and his attorney dropped a huge hint that more indictments could be coming. Weisselberg and the Trump Organization are facing charges of Grand Larceny and Tax Fraud. Both the Trump Organization and weisselberg claimed not guilty. Tom, walk us through todays proceedings and that significant update we heard from Weisselbergs Attorney. Reporter right. This came about because Weisselbergs Attorney was arguing for more time. This was a status conference, basically an opportunity for the judge and parties to get into court and say now thAt Theres been an indictment, theres been a pleading of not guilty. Lets get together and figure out the timing of this and what its going to be and when are we going to be in court and go back to trial . In the process of asking for more time to be able to file the defense motions, presuming Theyll File a motion to dismiss and other types of filings to try to attack the indictment and the charges against their client, Allen Weisselberg seen center in the screen, he essentially said theres going to be look, theres going to be additional indictments coming. Theres a strong belief the additional charges are coming. We dont know whAt Those charges will be. We dont know if theyre going to involve other individuals. We did ask the members of The Press asked Weisselbergs Attorneys outside of court who could be charged here moving forward. They did not answer that question. I asked weisselberg directly if he was considering whether he will cooperate in this investigation in this case and potentially plead guilty. He did not respond to that question either. So theres a lot that we dont know as far as where this is going to be going. We have reported that other members of the Trump Organization have been brought before the Grand Jury here in manhattan. As far as this case goes back to the scheduling component, the defense will file their motions in january of next year. Prosecutors have until may to respond, and then were looking at a possible Trial Date of late august or early September Of 2022 for this case which folks may think will be a long time from now, but in a complex case like this, with 6 Million documents already transferred between the parties, its actually a pretty quick timeline.
