Our thanks. Your rewards. As we begin a new hour, we turn to the biden agenda. Joe manchin says he wants a Spending Bill not too big. In moments, how the poor Peoples Campaign is putting pressure on the West Virginia senator. Plus, a humanitarian crisis in Del Rio, texas. New developments about how the biden administration is responding. And the woman who designed the dress that has the worlds of fashion and politics buzzing. This is American Voices. We begin this hour in texas where the states ultraconservative legislature kicks off a new Special Session tomorrow. This time around, texas republicans plan to focus on redistricting. They are already busy working to redraw maps to favor republican incumbents. The Texas Tribune reports, quote, republicans hold majorities in both chambers they will have every advantage as they use the process to position their party for the next decade as the State Population becomes younger and more diverse. This is a process known as partisan gerrymandering which new polling out of texas shows the majority of texans are against. Unfair maps drawn by The Political Party in power. And of course, this comes just weeks after the state passed a restrictive Voting Law despite a relentless effort from texas democrats to block that bill. Republicans justified the law touting donald trumps Big Lie of a stolen election. But new polling shows just one in three texas voters think widespread Voter Fraud is a problem. It is not. And this is just another example of the Texas Legislature sharpening its extreme ideology and not focusing on the will of the people. And of course, it is not just texas. Since the insurrection on january 6th, 18 states have passed restrictive Voting Laws. But senate democrats in washington have the power to fight these attacks on our democracy with a new version of a vote rights bill. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar discussed her plan to push the freedom to vote act through congress this morning on msnbc. We are going out and reaching out to republicans. I just did that this weekend. Talking to them about the bill. Explaining how we have changed the bill to make it more practical for small areas, small jurisdictions, rural areas. Responded to some of the challenges of our time. And um we are going to them on that. I, personally, as you know, favor abolishing the filibuster. But Senator Manchin and others have indicated some willingness to look at things like a standing filibuster. So once again, West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin is at the center of this debate to protect ballot access. But will he let the filibuster and republican Obstructionism Stand in the way . Not if Voting Rights advocates have anything to say about it. They are out with a new, fullpage Ad Today in print in West Virginia newspapers demanding action now. The man behind this Pressure Campaign joins us now. Reverend william barber, cochair of the poor Peoples Campaign. Reverend, always good to see you and i want to start with your advocacy. Talk to me about those ads we just showed our viewers in newspapers in West Virginia. How do they play into the push to get Senator Manchins support . Well, the Figure Thing these ads come from the poor and lowwealth people in the West Virginia poor Peoples Campaign. And they said all politicians local you have to Touch Manchin where he is. You have to expose how his policies are hurting minors and women and poor and lowwealth people from the hood. You have to put it out there and these ads are very explicit in that. They show that manchin is on the opposite side of 40 of the people in West Virginia who are poor and low wealth. 50 of children who are poor and low wealth. 44 of women are poor and low wealth. And 689,000 white people who are poor and low wealth and the policies he is pushing trying to cut the economic Investment Bill and the way he is trying to water down Voting Rights will hurt those people. So we are doing that. We are launching a national call in tomorrow and we are Making Plans for sitins and other things, Nonviolent Direct Action in his state, in his offices because people are saying he must see people who looks like him, who grew up like him. Because he loves to act like hes for the people and for the minors but his policies are very different than what he proposes to be. Reverend, you said something very interesting earlier on our air. You pushed back against the notion that West Virginia is a red state. And instead, you argue that it is an unorganized state. How are you watching that show up right now . Well, we did a study. You know, we dont just go out and say things. Um, unleashing the power and we did it with Columbia University professors and we looked at 15 states where poor and lowwealth people were inspired and they are called to vote for an agenda that would address systemic Racism And Denial of healthcare. In those states, the number of poor and low wealth people who are eligible to vote out that dont vote because Nobody Talks to them, democrats or republican, far outweigh the number of of votes that people actually win by. And so, those 700,000 residents, many thousands of them adults oftentimes arent spoken to and the truth is people who make less than 50,000 a year according to our study tend to vote for progressives. Too often, republicans have voted against and democrats have ignored them and we have to turn that around in a state like West Virginia. They are the Sleeping Giant and poor and lowwealth people make up onethird of the electorate now. Thats why weve said the president needs to sit with religious denominational leaders of every race, creed, and color, theological perspective, poor and lowwealth people, some economists and Voting Rights lawyer, and talk to them. And then, we need to have a moral reset in this country. Not just talk about numbers. But talk about the people who are going to be hurt if we dont protect Voting Rights and if we dont expand the kind of economic development that needs to happen from the bottom up. All right reverend barber, as always, you know i appreciate your time. Thank you so much. With all the power to reform the filibuster in their hands, when and how will Senate Democrats Act . The New York times Editorial Board argues there is no time to waste. Writing quote, having lost the White House and the senate last year, republicans appear intent on rigging the game in their favor for the midterms. Protecting the integrity and the Voting Rights of its citizens should be priority number one not because it helps democrats but because it helps preserve democracy. Joining me now, the host of the Mehdi Hasan Show Right here on msnbc. I am sure ow viewers are very excited to see you a little early, so take me back to the spring. You interviewed Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumerment he said the deadline to pass Voting Protections was probably by august or so. I dont know about you, mehdi, but time for me has become a flat circle. I am going to remind you we are now in the middle of september. We have this new slimmed down version of a Voting Rights bill. How do you think this is all going to play out with Manchin And Sinema . Alicia, thanks for having me on. I think its i am with The New York Times Editorial Board. There is no time to waste. It may already be too late in some areas. When it comes to things like gerrymandering, it is already happening. Republicans are already doing it since the new Census Results came out. We have already seen some of the biggest most important states in the union, texas, florida, georgia passing repressive new voter laws. So there is no time to waste. I dont understand what is taking so long. Well, i do understand. It is Joe Manchin. It is kyrsten sinema. It is a handful of other senate democrats dragging their feet on this. Will this be the moment where we get some clarity from manchin . Because he says he wants bipartisan support for voting legislation. Well, this is his bill now. He and klobuchar and others have come up with this compromise. He says he is got Lisa Murkowski onboard. But alicia, i am no expert in math but that is one republican. He needs nine more. You need ten to get over the filibuster which Joe Manchin also supports. So, you know, the rubber hits the road now. Does he support the filibuster . Or does he support his own bill . Mehdi, when you say we will wait and see, you say that with the skepticism of someone who has sat here on many sundays and asked the same question. I want to turn to your interview with John Legend. He had a few things to say about Arizona Senator Kyrsten sinema. Take a listen. Its funny because i actually spoke to kyrsten sinema. I did a fundraiser at our house in Los Angeles for the democratic Sen Toirl campaign committee. This was years ago, two or three years ago. And she, at the time, was vociferously vociferously standing up for the filibuster. One of the the attendees at the fundraiser asked a question about the filibuster. And there were several of the senators that were there who were willing to get rid of the filibuster. But even at the time, Senator Sinema stood up for the filibuster. And i just cant say more clearly how wrong i think she is on this issue. Mehdi, this particularly interesting because we dont get a lot of intimate windows into Senator Sinemas thinking, right . That is part of the mystique of her. And also, we talk a lot about her political evolution. What did you make of that piece of the interview . You very politely call it mystique. I might call It Arrogance that she doesnt actually come on shows like yours or mine and take questions from journalibilities but yes, you are right. That is a revealing conversation that john told us about and i think its revealing because it is a reminder that sinema, even in private, even when surrounded by fund raise you know you know, deeppocketed donors, hollywood celebrities, sticks to her guns on the filibuster which is why a lot of progressives see her as a bigger obstacle, a bigger thorn in the side of the White House agenda, democratic agenda, the progressive agenda than even Joe Manchin. Sinema, whether it is the mystique, whether its the arrogance, whether its her love for the republican party. I dont know what it is. Is much more stubborn even than manchin may be on the filibuster and that is worrying for a lot of progressives. Thats what that story from John I think tells me and i would urge all of your viewers to stick around till 8 00 to watch the whole of that interview. I talked to John Legend about Voting Rights, about criminal justice reform. We even talk about the Middle East and his support for the palestinians. Mehdi, i love it so much. Thank you. So fun to see you. Reminder catch The Medhi Hasan Show starting 8 00 p. M. Eastern only on msnbc nnchts. Next, the humanitarian crisis in Del Rio, texas. Today, the department of Homeland Security began Deportation Flights moving some of the thousands of migrants including young children from Del Rio, texas. Many of them are from haiti. Video from Voice Of America shows what they say is the first Deportation Flight to land in portauprince. Dhs secretary, alejandro mayorkas, says they expect to remove at least 3,000 people by today from Del Rio. With me now, nbc News Correspondent, julia ainsley. Also, the copresident of Community Change Action and patrice lawrence, she is the Executive Director of the undocu black network. Thank you all so much. Julia, i want to start with you. What is the latest on these Deportation Flights . And what are you hearing from dhs . Well, we knew friday when the number crossed over 10,000 and then, of course, kept climbing that they immediately put plans in place to start ramping up Deportation Flights to haiti. Most of these are coming out of San Antonio back to portauprince. There were three today, alicia, but there are more to come. We should soon start seeing as many as six a day is what i am being told by officials. And right now, it looks like, yes, there are some children involved. Most of the time, its families who have not yet claimed credible fear. Thats that first test for asylum. And then, there are a number of single adults. This is all fitting under the biden Administrations Policy of title 42. That was actually imposed by the Trump Administration at the start of the covid pandemic. And they were trying to keep this in place um because it actually allows them to prioritize single adults while any unaccompanied children would be allowed to stay here. Families do have a credible fear, though, seem to be able to stay here and go on what they call alternatives to detention where usually they have an Ankle Monitor until their court date. So thats what we know so far. We are going to continue to monitor this. Obviously, they are trying to alleviate the pressure under the bridge but when you are talking about numbers that large, it takes a long time for the crisis to subside. I mean, patrice, the head of haitis national Migration Office is asking for a humanitarian moratorium on deportations. That, of course, echoes calls from advocates that haiti cannot handle having hundreds of deportees sent back. The biden administration did Pause Deportations to haiti after the earthquake. Now, reversing course. What does the biden administration need to understand about the state of haiti right now . The most important thing for the biden administration to understand about haiti right now is that conditions have not changed. They paused deportations after announcing Temporary Protected Status in july. And in less than two months, theres no way to have expected for the conditions to have gotten better. Whatever intel they have is bad. And our partners who are on the ground in Del Rio right now and with alliances in haiti, including haitian bridge alliance, have told us that they are in no condition to accept thousands of returnees. You know, lorella, this is all happening with the backdrop. We are waiting any minute now for the Senate Parliamentarian to decide whether pathways to citizenship for certain undocumented migrants to be included in the reconciliation bill. So much so, that if your Phone Rings in the middle of this interview, i am going to encourage you to take it because i am going to imagine that it is you getting that news. How does what were seeing play out in Del Rio which understanding is not the same as, you know, immigration in the interior of this country. But how does it complicate sort of the larger conversation that we are having about immigration . Alicia, i will not need any encouragement to pick up that phone call. But just quickly, i do think that the Border Conversation crucially important. Its a genuine humanitarian challenge that urgently demands our attention and what we have seen in the last few weeks is republicans are trying to link it to the bill in congress that would provide a path to legal permanent residency for people who have lived in the united states for years. Sometimes, for decades. Now, this is a strategy to try to kill the bill. It is simple and straightforward, frankly. And democrats should not take the bait. So i think weve got to both address the humanitarian situation at the border. Weve got to, also, continue to invest in the longterm solutions. And the biden administration has to live up to its commitment to really reform and respect our Asylum Laws and our asylum system. So what we have is a situation where Trump And Steven miller dismantled the u. S. Asylum system because they did not believe in it. They did not like immigrants. They were opposed to immigration. And they did everything that they could to slow it down or to stop it, altogether. So when it comes to asylum, they succeeded. It is our expectation that this administration based on the promises that they made come through on their vision for a different way of engaging with asylees at the border. With refugees, rather, at the border. And i think they also have to keep forward and push their their promise and their commitment to advance our domestic Policy Agenda on immigration. And that includes getting immigration done via the reconciliation package. We are right in it. We are keeping steady and cool and focused, alicia, and we believe that weve got a onceinalifetime, Onceinageneration Opportunity to really get this through the finish line. You said a lot of critical things there but the thing that is going to stick with me is that emphasis on vision, instead of reaction. Thank you all so much. Well, he did not wear it, the president s economic message thursday sounded a lot like the message stitched onto aocs met gala dress. Tax the rich. Its long been the new York Congresswomans platform. As The New York Times argues, her appearance at the gala was a test, within itself, of quote whether she is viewed as fighting pour for the people or aligning with the elites. We spoke on thursday this week about how that dress came about and about jamess push for equity inside her industry. Work that has landed her on times list of the 100 most influential people of 2021. So lets talk about the dress that everyone is talking about. How did the partnership with the congresswoman come about . Well, we were introduced in july. Um, and, you know, i was a little bit um nervous, quite frankly, at this prospect of dressing her for the met gala. And as a designer, i really wanted to create something that really honored her. And, you know, i wanted to think a lot about what it means to be a congresswoman like her in 2021. And then, um, how does that person then attend an event as inclusive as the met gala . When you say to be that person in 2021, why is that relevant . Because, you know, i think its changing, right snt i think how we view politicians has changed so much, especially over the past four or five years and she is so outspoken and people love her so much for that. So, i wanted to honor her. She is also very young, right . Um, and i wanted to make sure that we kind of walked a line between honoring who she is as a congresswoman. But also, understanding that she is a woman and as a woman, people are actively trying to police her body and what she wears and all of these things. And ultimately, she needs to own that on her own and i think we did by using it as a canvas. Was there part of you that thought no we cant do that . No. No, because you have to keep pushing forward, right . And um, you know, the met as an event, people that attend the event as well, a lot of them are really, you know, big people within Pop Culture. And i think what a lot of people dont want to acknowledge is that Pop Culture pushes All Of Us forward, oftentimes, including politicians. And so, when you put that message out there as uncomfortable as it may be for some of the people that are in that room, we are also pushing that idea forward. And you know what . Shes been saying tax the rich for a really long time and shes going to say it in any room that shes in, no matter what even at the expense of her own comfort because it would have been a lot easier just to show up in that dress without that message, right . And just like, have a fun night. But thats not who she is. She would have never done that, right . So she wants to make sure that we are breaking the fourth wall and actually getting that message in front of the people that need to hear it and they are not just going to be able to, you know, sit back and have the regular experience that they have normally had at that event. Well, its not only that she would have been able to kick back and have that night. You, as well. I mean, i am intrigued by the fact that there was no trepidation on your part knowing what the conversation would be on the other side of this. Where does that sense come from . The fact that i love this country, to be frank. I mean, i want this country to be the best possible version of itself and we have also just gone through a global pandemic that was really hard on people. And it was really hard on my community and i really want to see the people that have the least start getting access to a little bit more. There are a lot of people who will become familiar with your work as a product of having designed this dress. But your work has always been political, both in terms of your design, your focus on sustainability, and then the actionable work you have done outside of that. I am thinking, for example, of the 15 pledge. Can you talk us through what the 15 pledge is . And why you felt it was necessary in the moment which you conceptualized it . A couple days after George Floyd was murdered, i was seeing the news just like we all were. All these companies were making these, you know, commitments to saying i stand with black people and, you know, black Lives Matter and all of that. But they werent actually doing anything to help people or to change the situation that this country was in. And, you know, i was reading the messages but wasnt really inherently feeling it as a black woman. And, you know, a friend of mine called me and she was talking to me about a major corporation that she worked with that was a retailer. And saying, you know, they are based in minneapolis. And theyre really worried people are really upset and they really, you know, love black people. And i was like, okay, tell me more about this love of black people. And she is like they just donated like a couple million dollars to naacp and i was like oh, wow. Well, you know, black people spend more than a couple million dollars every day so is that really enough . And shes like well, i think they have a couple products there that are actually owned by black entrepreneurs. And i was like, oh, like are we supposed to be grateful for that . That they happen to stock a couple of products made by black people that are targeted to black people . Kind of just feels like good business. And she was like well what would you want them to do . And i was like, well, black people are almost 15 of the population. Major retailers should consider committing 15 of their Shelf Space to blackowned businesses. I just sat down and i thought about what would happen across america if major retailers started making that commitment. I wrote it out. I posted it on instagram. That was on a saturday. And sunday, i stayed up overnight with my web designer. We launched a petition monday at noon. By wednesday, we became a nonprofit and by day ten, sephora became the first major corporation to commit to the 15 pledge. So since then, we have signed almost 30 major companies. Um, macys, ulta beauty, nordstrom, tenyear contract. Everyone signs a contract. And, you know, through our pledge takers, we have now driven economic opportunity of over 10 Billion to blackowned businesses across this country. As for criticisms of her address, aoc shared this thought posed by journalist Molly Cahill tweeting Quote Femininity has the pour to make the World Talk and if that is true, maybe it also has the power to make the world organize, vote, think critically, and consider the wellbeing of their neighbors. Vaccinations are required for all delegates who attend. On the agenda, vaccinating the world and overcoming Vaccine Skepticism and misinformation thats allowing covid to run rampant. To that point, a new documentary by vices bella ramos takes us inside the spanishspeaking antivax world. Reveal an epidemic within the pandemic. Vice News Correspondent bella ramos joins us now. She is also an Msnbc Contributor and author of finding latinx, In Search Of The Voices Redefining Latin identity. A clip of you and a farm worker, lets take a listen. I am not sure that i have that clip so you can talk us through the common thread you found among those who are listening almost exclusively to Social Media as their primary source for information on these vaccines. So someone like someone like rosario, right . This is a latina that is living in the Central Valley of california. One of my biggest questions to her was why does one listen to antivax Social Media influencers or antivax doctors . And i asked her like why dont you listen to someone like dr. Fauci and her response was simple and i think is the answer we have to be aware of. She said i have never seen dr. Fauci. I have never heard of dr. Fauci. Right . And so, we have to recognize that a lot of spanishspeaking latinos arent listening to you and i, alicia. They are not on Mainstream Media Listening to dr. Fauci. Many spanishleaking latinos get it from their phones. And we have to understand for decades, for years, our phones, these devices have been sort of source of survival for many latinas because this is the only way many families can remain in touch with their Loved Ones on the other side of the Border And Study after study shows that latinos spend more time on Social Media. Latinos are more likely to own smartphones than the Average American and they also show we spend more time on Facebook Message and on whatsapp chats than the Average American. Those are the very encrypted platforms where Dis And Misinformation have completely inundated the community. So something that was so great to us, something that has given us so much connectivity is literally becoming a a well, a study that you mentioned in the doc found that 70 of Spanishlanguage Misinformation on facebook was not removed or labeled as misinformation, compared to 30 of the same content in english showing that Spanish Misinformation slipping through the cracks there. What more can these platforms do to find it, to label it, to take down misinformation . And why has it been so difficult to do this in spanish . I mean, is it just is it that its actually difficult to do . Or is it a lack of commitment to doing it . The what you just said. It it is not difficult. They have the answers. Facebook and these bigtech companies have the tools but we know they simply arent doing anything. When we talk to advocates, what they are asking for is literally for the bare minimum, right . They want facebook and big tech to do exactly the same thing with Spanish Language Dis And Misinformation they are doing with english, which is not that much. So they understand who their latino consumers are. Right . The Big Question that i had and that we all had as we were doing this report and is the question that most people has is who who is winning . You know, who is winning from this . We saw in 2020 that mis and disinformation targeted at latinos, that cost votes. Who is benefitting . One of the things we quoted in our documentary was that the millions of followers of the antivax content creators are worth up to 1. 1 Billion worth of annual Ad Revenue for facebook, youtube, and twitter. 1. 1 Billion and that analysis only found all of english content. So we have no idea how much big tech is making from spanish content. That is a big number. That is a lot of money. I have got about 30 seconds left. What did you hear from Grassroots Workers pushing to get the right information out . It is a matter of trust. Knowing in this moment, a lot of latinas are skeptical. One of the Things Someone told me was the question many latinas had was during the pandemic, they were treated as Essential Workers but the government didnt protect us so why should we trust the government now . And that is exactly what grassroots organizers are doing. They are going door to door because they know in this moment, people are more likely to trust someone that looks like them, speaks in their language and is part of their community. So in this moment, in this moment of a massive vacuum where big tech is failing, government is failing to pass any form of legislation. Those door knocks are literally saving lives. As always, thank you. Next, the dilemma of Social Media and selfimage. What mega plat forms know they are doing to teens, and doing nothing about. Instagram is causing major harm to the Mental Health of teens. That is according to facebooks own research which was recently leaked to the wall street journal. Revealing one in five teens in the united states and the uk say instagram makes them feel worse about themselves. And young people, overall, blame the app for higher rates of Depression And Anxiety. Joining me now, dr. Sue varmer. And callan rosenblat, Nbc News Youth And Internet culture reporter. My Internet Youth and culture reporter, i want to ask why this is happening. But i got to say, as a fullgrown Woman User of the app, i think anyone who uses it sort of understands that some of this is just baked into the experience, itself. What do you see as the piece as most contributing to this . Well, i think youre youre dead on. Anyone who is involved in internet culture, anyone who passively uses platforms like instagram, know that this is a problem. Body image, selfimage, feeling like a constant competition with other people. That is a huge issue on these platforms. Now, i think something we can look at is the Filtering And Editing of images. Its a massive issue on these platforms, especially on instagram where people kind of present the perfect, ideal image of their lives. There was a a influencer actually on tiktok who showed its not just still images, its moving images where you can actually morph what your body looks like and it creates a completely different perspective for people who are viewing this. Theres a reporter at insider who made this fantastic statement who said its not just Media Literacy when you are reading the news. For Social Media in it he remembers of other peoples bodies and images and what they present as factual because we all know that is probably not what is really going on behind the scenes. Right. I mean, dr. Varmer, a lot of my favorite influencers do constantly remind us, like, you are seeing a snapshot of my life. Right . Even people who try to be candid. Even people who try to present an unvarnished reality. It is just an impossibility. Right . You are selecting, here and there, how it is that you present yourself. It is interesting to me, not only the pieces of this that were about Body Image and kelen did just an awesome job of laying that out there. But also, the Depression And Anxiety piece of this. You know, i think about the fact that we used to compare ourselves to our classmates. We used to compare ourselves to our neighbor. Our universe of comparison has just absolutely ballooned with these apps. Absolutely. And, alicia, its so interesting because the tendency for the brain to selectively hone in on information that it already believes, that already exists, right . So, as young teenagers, we are growing up and we are comparing ourselves to other people. And if what we are feeling is inadequacy, then we are going to reach out into the Environment And Use images and accounts that further confirm that. So, there is already a confirmation bias. The second thing is that we are already tempted to want to use social comparisons, first and foremost, just to find out where we stand. Where do we fit in . Sometimes, its not always unhealthy. Sometimes, its meant as inspiration. The problem is is where is the line between inspiration which in my mind is healthy and brings out the best in us. And aspiration which is this quality of feeling that were lacking and a gap between where we are right now and where we think we want to be. And the problem is is that the bar its a sort of moving target, if you will, set by a lot of celebrities who even though they remind us this is just a snap shot, a moment in time, we Cant Help but want to believe because aspirational content, beautiful, aesthetically curated is highly aspirational. When we look at the 0. 1 it doesnt matter how much people tell us this is not real we want it anyway. As a user, as a parent whose kids are still too young to be on these apps, it is easy to sort of transition to the individual Agency And Responsibility here. But we are talking about a system, right . We are talking about facebook researchers seeing this information, gathering this information, and then not doing anything about it. What does this tell us about Facebook And Instagram . Well, personally, i find this very frustrating that theyre aware. I think it would be hard for them not to be aware how big an issue this is but to have done research on this and to not take action. Something mentioned in this report is the algorithm on instagram, if you interact with a certain topic, like me, i love seeing food being made. That will filter to your explorer page. Youll see a ton of other items relevant to your interests. When people are looking at Body Type the algorithm is showing Body Types back at them showing nutrition, perfect fitness, these bodies that look flawless. It is reinforcing that everyone but you looks like this. I think Facebook And Instagram have a real need to tweak this algorithm to show how there is more out there and also something that tiktok doesnt say, hey. Youve been on this app for a really long time looking at this for a really long time. Maybe take a break. Get some water. Come back later. Maybe that is Something Instagram should be looking at, too i need to be parented by the app. I have about 30 seconds left. Your final thoughts . You know, Depression And Anxiety, suicide thoughts and behavior, anxiety, and eating disorders, are so prevalent right now. I think it is a responsibility for us as a community, Family System to recognize that this is part of our life. It is fulfilling and the need for connection, decreasing our loneliness, coming at a heavy, heavy cost. So let it be simply one part of a very healthy, very diverse and nutritious diet. All right.
