Ways. We just seem to have lost the ability to dialogue and to reason, and to do it in a way thats respectful and thoughtful, inside of politics. On monday, the democrats plan to pay for the 3. 5 trillion Infrastructure Bill that came into focus. The House Ways And Means Committee announced Tax Hikes that would amount to nearly 2. 1 Trillion in increased revenues. But left unscathed, the vast fortunes of the megarich, like Mark Zuckerberg and elon musk. Perhaps thats why Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasiocortez struck such a chord with the Fashion Statement heard round the world at one of the most opulent events of the year. And to aocs credit, just a few days later, President Biden seemed to echo her sentiments. People with tens of millions of dollars. They play by a different set of rules. Where is it written with all the Tax Breaks in The American Tax Code go to corporations at the very top. I think its enough. Im tired of it. Meanwhile, as democrats plow full steam ahead on their economic agenda, the fight against covid rages on, too. On friday, the fda announced they dont recommend Pfizer Booster shots for americans 16 years and older, rather than, they are only recommended for highrisk americans who are either immunocompromised or 65 years and older. Vaccinations and Booster Shots aside, this week, we also saw a clear indication of how we did effectively fight the disastrous economic effects of the pandemic. Because of the Stimulus Checks and Unemployment Aid in 2020, the Census Bureau reported that the Poverty Level dropped to 9. 1 , the lowest since records began in 1967. Very promising news, indeed, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell could threaten it with this announcement on wednesday. Let me be crystal clear about this. Republicans are united in opposition to raising the Debt Ceiling. Not because it doesnt need to be done. In a memo obtained by the hill, however, the White House warned the gop that the u. S. Has just began to recover from the pandemic and a manufactured Debt Ceiling crisis would threaten the gains weve made. Meanwhile, President Biden will deliver his first address to the United Nations General Assembly amid growing criticism over the chaotic withdraw from afghanistan and the revelation that the u. S. Mistakenly killed ten afghan civilians in a Drone Strike last month. The lingering effects of americas longest war, trumpism, economic inequality, a debt crisis, covid relief, all of this is happening while certain Agenda Items on Democrats Todo List have hit a snag. Chief among them, Voting Rights. Just two days ago, a north Carolina Court struck down the States Voter Identification law, claiming it was passed, at least in part, to make it harder for black voters to cast ballots. And while this further under while this further underscores the need for a new federal voting Rights Law that protects and expands voting access nationwide, with a 50 50 split in the senate and no change to the filibuster, it remains as unlike as ever. And a finale at the Supreme Court would probably not end well for democrats, either. Even with assurances this week from both justices amy coney Barrett And Clarence thomas that the Court Isnt partisan just let that sink in this is a Supreme Court thats been remade in Donald Trumps image. And its been increasingly hostile to Voting Rights recently. In remarks that the university of Notre Dame on thursday, justice thomas was right about one thing, though. I think the court was thought to be the least dangerous branch and we may have becoMe The most dangerous. Ya think . So whats a democrat to do . Enter senator Amy Klobuchar, who along with several cosponsors announced The Freedom To Vote Act earlier this week. And as you see, joining me now is senator Amy Klobuchar, democrat from the great state of minnesota, hoMe To carlton college. Shes also chair of the senate rules committee. Senator klobuchar, thank you so much for coming back to the Sunday Show. Thanks, jonathan, but i have not been in your new digs in person. And the view of the capitol, its really amazing. So, congratulations. Thank you very much. It is quite a quite swank set. All right. Lets talk about The Freedom To Vote Act. We have a the provisions that we can put up on the screen. Automatic Voter Registration and online Voter Registration, election day holiday, uniform early voting, sameday Voter Registration. Federal minimum standards on vote by Mail And Drop boxes. Standards for Voter Identification and preventing state elections subversion. I read all of that because your colleague on the other side of the aisle, Senator Susan collins, well, shes not really feeling it. She is quoted in the Washington Post as saying and shes from maine, i represent a state with one of the highest turnouts in the country, consistently. And yet we dont have early voting, so i dont see why the federAl Government should impose rules on a state and Preempt State Laws for a state thats doing a great job. Senator klobuchar, make the case for The Freedom To Vote Act and why senator collins is dead wrong. I look forward to talking with her about this in the future. But stepping back, The Freedom To Vote Act, first of all is a major victory for a country, because weve got unity with our voting Rights Group thats worked on this all summer, including Senator Manchin of west virginia, senator tester, king kaine, murdoch and myself. I noticed a name you didnt mention . Sinema. Senator sinema has been working hard on the reconciliation act, the Infrastructure Bill. Shes been doing some other things. But weve had rave reviews about the bill, positive Editorials Today about the substance of the bill in The New York Times, Washington Post. For me, that was number one. Yes, with we can get to the procedure, which i know we will, but right now you have over 400 bills introduced that are Voter Suppression bills. 31 have passed. Look at what just happened in georgia. In the words of reverend warnock, some people dont want some people to vote. You have to write your Birth Date on the inside envelope. You Cant Vote on weekends during the Runoff Period in georgia. Which is why major companies came out against the bill. Limited drop boxes, in wisconsin. If it wasnt for governor evers vetoing it, that he would have hat one drop off box in the entire city of milwaukee. Just like they had in Harris County in texas. That is whats been happening around the country. So The Freedom To Vote Act firmly grounded in the constitution. I was writing, watching your segment on the Supreme Court there. This one is clear. It says, congress can make or alter laws regarding federal elections. So we feel really strongly that this would be upheld, The Freedom To Vote Act. And yet, Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell thinks that these Voting Laws that you just talked about, theyre just fine. Lets have a listen to what he said. What do all soft these new laws have in common . None of them, not one, is designed to suppress the vote based upon race. So, there is no reason for the federAl Government to take over how we conduct elections. Okay, senator klobuchar, this is ridiculous. Because, of course, the bills dont say, stop black people from voting. The intent behind these laws is what is stopping black people from voting. Your reaction to senator mcconnell. Id quote a north Carolina Court, which had some republicanappointed judges that once said their laws, the laws that were struck down, discriminate with surgical precision. Thats what happened in georgia. Thats what happens in texas. When you take away weekend voting, what do you think thats about . When you say people who are standing in line are not allowed to get Water And Food when theyre standing in line for hours in the sun, from nonpartisan volunteers. Oftentimes, as we know, it is lowincome areas. It is places where its harder for people to vote. Where they are standing in line. How can we forget those voters in milwaukee, in their homemade masks and Garbage Bags Standing In The Rain for hours and hours, at the beginning of the pandemic. So thats why courts have called these bills out in the past, but now they are seeking justice from the u. S. Capitol. Theyre seeking justice from washington. Just like civil rights warriors did in the 60s. You cannot have these states basically deciding who their voters are. If they had trouble in the last election, if they lost the presidency, then change your policies. Change your candidates. Change your messages. Do not try to change your voters. That is against the fundamental right to vote. And that is a very powerful and impassioned answer, senator klobuchar. And yet i know and you know and this audience very well knows that the filibuster is a thing that is going to keep The Freedom To Vote Act from becoming the law of the land. At Who Point will we get to will we see a Rule Change for at least Voting Rights, that the Filibuster Rule is changed, so it can be passed by a simple Majority Vote . Well, were going to cross that bridge when we coMe To it, although as someone noted, it may be a short walk. But right now, Senator Schumer and i believe hes right about this. We are going out and reaching out to republicans. I just did that this weekend. Talking to them about the bill. Explaining how weve changed the bill to make it more practical for small areas, small jurisdictions, rural areas, responded to some of the challenges of our time, and we are going to them on that. I personally, as you know, favor abolishing the filibuster. But Senator Manchin and others have indicated some willingness to look at things like a standing filibuster. Making some changes you would have to make changes to the rules to do that. So im going to, one, do everything we can to make the case for this bill. We literally just introduced it a week ago. And then, two, we go to the procedures, if we need to. But i just dont know how my colleagues can in good faith, some of them, i know and i like very well, on the other side of the aisle, how they can embrace what is essentially evil. It is it is evil to make it deliberately hard for people to vote. It is not consistent with democracy. And thats coming from a state that you know well, minnesota, highest Voter Turnout Rate in the country every year. And who have we electelected . Not always democrats. We elected Tim Pawlenty as governor with very progressive Voting Laws. We elected jesse ventura. I dont think it always dictates who wins, but it means that people are part of the franchise. They are not left out of the franchise. When you look at what happened yesterday at the capitol, i was proud of the police, yet we are still dealing with that same sentiment We Saw on January 6th, where people do not respect peoples right to vote. They were trying to tear down the electoral college. They literally went to the platform where Joe Biden and Kamala Harris would be inaugurated to weeks later to tear it down. They invaded the capitol with Bear Spray and bayonets and flag poles and now those weapons are basically being sent out to the states with Voter Suppression laws. It is all part of the democracy and my friend, tim kaine, probably said it best. Our job as senators right now, weve got a lot to do, economically, but it is the oath we take to protect and defend the constitution of the united states. We need federal Voting Rights to do that. There is no more important message to end on than that right there. Senator Amy Klobuchar of minnesota, thank you very much for coming back to this Sunday Show. Thanks, jonathan. It was great to be on. Coming up, i sat down with the second in command at the Treasury Department to talk about the latest efforts to get economic relief to those who need it. Six months in, there are already signs that The American Rescue Plan is working, but theres still a lot more to do. Deputy Secretary Of The Treasury told Me That in the wake of the federal Eviction Moratorium expiring, a muchneeded lifeline may be getting rerouted to those who desperately need the relief. I sat down with him earlier this week. Deputy secretary, thank you so much for coming to the Sunday Show. Its great to be here. The american Rescue Plan is now six months old. The Treasury Department has put out lately report about how its doing. So, how is it doing . Well, jonathan, thank you for asking. I know youve spent a great deal of time covering The American Rescue Plan and we have done a great job of putting money into the economy. Over 1 Trillion has flowed through the Treasury Department. Over 450 Billion of those have went directly to The American people. 400 Billion in Stimulus Checks that went to people to help them pay for food and rent, to help them get through the pandemic. More than 60 Billion have went to people in terms of the Child Tax Credit checks. And the way to judge how were doing is to think about where weve come from. A year ago, when you think about where the economy was, we were losing jobs, the pandemic was out of control. And today, over 75 of americans have gotten one shot. Weve seen Job Growth of about 700,000 over the last several months. And we see the economy continuing to improve because of The American Rescue Plan, which has put money into peoples pockets. Also helped small businesses make it through the pandemic, and finally, put money into state and locAl Governments, which will allow them to meet the needs of people as we continue to deal with the pandemic. Talk about those state and locAl Governments. There was a point at which, you know, we were talking about the Eviction Moratorium, the deadline coming and going, and nothing being done about it. And people being worried about the fact that they were going to be evicted from their homes. And one of the things that caMe To light was that that rental Assistance Wasnt getting out the door by states and localities. What is treasury doing to ensure that that money thats been allocated to those jurisdictions gets out of those treasuries and into the pockets of families who are worried about staying in their homes . As you know well, jonathan, the Eviction Challenge has been one that weve had in this country long before the pandemic. Its even worse during the pandemic, not only because people have lost jobs or incomes have fell, but because one of the things we can do to prevent the spread of covid is by social distancing. And in order to social distance, you need a home and a place to distance from. Thats why the president has been focused on making sure that we reduce evictions in this country, and thats why he pushed to get more money in The American Rescue Plan for eviction protection. The proof is, we want more of that money to flow from the locAl Governments and the states that have it into the hands of tenants and landlords that need it. Over the course of the last several months, weve seen more than 1 Million people assisted by the emergency rental program. Our goal is to make sure that we continue to provide flexibilities to these grantees in order to make sure that money can flow. On September 30th, congress has given us the ability to reallocate money from grantees who arent spending it quickly to places that are. A month ago, i visited connecticut, and in connecticut, the state is spending money quickly and in innovative ways to get money into the hands of tenants who need it. They have a busted setup that goes from community to community, allowing people to sign up for the Emergency Rental Assistance program. Theyre using our flexibilities to make sure that people of color, especially whom have been hurt the most by the pandemic, are able to get access to their program. And what i said in connecticut and what i said in houston when i was there is you keep doing what youre doing to make sure youre able to reach people with Emergency Rental Assistance and make sure you can still meet the needs of the people who live there. I want to make sure that i heard what youre saying. That come September 30th, that congress is giving you the ability to take money from those jurisdictions that havent spent the money and push it to jurisdictions that are spending the money. I heard that correctly . Congress has ensured that were able to meet the needs of people by getting it into the hands of local and State Grantees who have the ability to get the money to people who need it. Lets talk about the 3. 5 trillion reconciliation plan. One of the concerns expressed by senator Joe Manchin is that this is a lot of money or i guess, two concerns. This is a lot of money, and this is, were so afraid of inflation, that this is going to drive inflation. And a report has come out where inflation in august only grew by 0. 3 . Is and thats lower than expected. Is that a blip or is that a trend . Should we be worried about inflation . The most important thing for us to worry about is to make sure were in a position to ensure that The American people have the resources to get through the pandemic. Thats why the President And Secretary yellen have been focused on two things. One is making sure that we got shots in peoples arms. And two, ensuring that money gets into the economy to ensure that people can make it from this end of the pandemic to the other end. When we think about the build back better plan and our ability to get that plan through congress, the most important thing for us to think about is what is this money being used for . The money is being used to address Crisis Weve faced in this country for too long. Crisis like inequality, like climate change. And the money we would get wouldnt be spent in the same way that the Stimulus Checks have been spent. Instead of it being money that we would put in the hands of people tomorrow, it would be money that would allow us to do things that are critical to making sure that our economy can grow over not only the next several years, but the next several decades. When i sit down with families as we were giving them the Child Tax Credit, i would mention three things that would prevent them from being able to get jobs. One was skills, two was transportation, and three was Child Care. The plan the president has put together addresses those challenges. You look at the infrastructure plan. It invests in transportation and public transportation, especially, to make sure that people can get to their jobs. It extends the Child Tax Credit in order to make sure that people have the money to be able to pay for things like school books. When we look at the results from the early months of the Child Tax Credit, one in four families say theyre using the Child Tax Credit money to pay for food and basic necessities. Youve seen Child Hunger Drop dramatically because of that money. And finally, the president s build back better plan also includes money to pay for helping people get the skills they need to do the jobs of the future in order to make sure that our economy can continue to grow. One of the things, you talked about Child Care and a lot of other things that the Reconciliation Bill and The American Rescue Plan has done, but theres a story on The Front Page of The New York Times that poverty has fallen to 1. 9 , the lowest since 1967, which is went records started being kept. Was that the direct goal of the president to take a hammer to poverty or a byproduct . It was a direct goal of president to look at quality, especially when it comes to racial inequality in this country. He made it a goal that he pushed through his cabinet, and thats why yellen and have been made sure that as weve implemented The American Rescue Plan, weve looked at ways to focus on racial inequity. We hired staff that focused on things like tribal affairs to ensure that the money we put through tribes in this country would help them in terms of build a prosperous future. We made sure that the rule making, we talked about the Emergency Rental Assistance program. A great deal of that money was Grrpt Ed Grrpted towards the lowest income possible. And when we talk about the Child Tax Credit, we expanded the Child Tax Credit in a way that made sure that the half of americans who are black and latino who were not able to get access to this, were able to do so based on the version of the Tax Credit passed in the Rescue Plan. We created a nonfiler portal that allowed them to be able to come into the system to receive this money going forward. And weve not only been intentional in The American Rescue Plan, but throughout the Treasury Department, weve been thinking about ways we can advance racial equity. For example, affordable housing. Its a Challenge Weve faced for too long. And often times, we give People Money to invest in down payments, but havent invested in the production of affordable housing. And the president s plan has called for us to do that. When you look at the Treasury Department, you see me sitting in the Deputy Secretarys chair, but the secretary has been focused on making sure that throughout the department, we have people who look like america in order to make sure that americas resources are used in way that helps promote equity. Deputy treasury secretary, wally adeyemu, thank you very much. The race against the clock to avoid Al Government shutdown, Andrew Ross Sorkin joins me next to break it all down. Stay with us. Let me remind you, these are the same folks who just four years ago passed the trump Tax Cut, totallying almost 2 Trillion in Tax Cuts. And listen to this. Almost none of that 2 Trillion Tax Cut was paid for. Joining me now is someone i havent seen in a long time. Andrew ross sorkin, new york times Columnist And Coanchor of squawkbox on cnbc. Andrew, welcoMe To the Sunday Show. Thank you for having me. I havent seen you in quite a while, but ive been watching you on sundays and its a privilege to be with you, my friend. Well, thank you very much for spending your sunday with me. Before we get into the 3. 5 trillion plan, i would love to get your reaction to what you heard from Deputy Secretary adeyemo and their optimism over the exact of The American Rescue Plan that was clearly apparent to me, whether that optimism and that good feeling is warranted. You know, i actually do think that we are in a much better place than i would have imagined 12 months ago, economically, that is. Clearly, there is still a Health Crisis in this country. Having said that, i do think that there are instant challenges ahead of us. I know well talk about the Debt Ceiling coming up, but there are real issues around inflation. The last month didnt necessarily suggest that. But youre looking at the Supply Chain problems in this country and so many other things. Thats on one side of the story. The other side is you really are seeing Wage Gains across the country, in part because of some of those Supply Chain shortages and the Demand Weve seen. The question, of course, is whether that demand is an artificial sugar high, meaning the government did spend an extraordinary amount of money, put a lot of money in peoples hands, and people went out and are spending it. That spending could stop and we dont know yet what thats going to look like. Lets tick through some of these things that you mentioned. Lets start with inflation. In the Washington Post, theres a headline, prices rise 5. 3 in august over last year. An early sign that inflation could be easing. And there on the screen, you see, data released tuesday by the Bureau Of Labor Statistics show that prices rose 0. 3 in august, compared to july, from which i understand is far below what folks have predicted. Is that a blip or is that a trend . Hard to know. Im in the camp that we are going to be seeing inflation and it really depends on what youre counting and frankly what youre buying right now. If youre trying to buy an automobile, most folks out there know that youre going to be higher than the Sticker Price for that automobile. Used cars, the prices charged is remarkable. You want to buy a couch or a refrigerator, not only will you wait several months, you might pay way more than you ever imagined. So there are clearly and then, of course, homes. If youre trying to buy a home or in certain cases renting a home, that price has gone up. It really depends on what were talking about. There are still items in the supermarket and others where youve actually even seen, oddly enough, prices go down. You know, andrew, to your point about Supply Chain, my husband and i ordered a new sofa and found out that there was a delay because of a shortage of foam in the world. Right. Lets talk about the Debt Ceiling. Have a listen to this flipflop from Senate Minority Leader, Mitch Mcconnell. There is zero chance, no chance, we wont raise the Debt Ceiling. No chance. America is not going to default. Let me be crystal clear about this. Republicans are united in opposition to raising the Debt Ceiling. Andrew, the Debt Ceiling must be raised. So how concerned are you that Leader Mcconnell has done a backflip on what hes said in 2017 . Look, trying to keep this apolitical, but just factual, the republicans have played Party Politics with the Debt Ceiling for quite soMe Time. So i think it really matters first of all, it matters. Our debt matters. The cost of debt matters. If you dont allow the Debt Ceiling to increase, the cost of that debt goes up. The rest of the world, investor, others say, you know what, i dont know if these people are good for the money. Are they going to pay . Thats what this is really about. And in the case of whats happening in washington right now, to Me The question is, what is the republican party effectively going to try to hold hostage to raise that Debt Ceiling . And i think we dont know yet what item will ultimately be on that list . In the weeks ahead, well be talking more and more about the Debt Ceiling and demystifying it for people. If we adult, if the united states defaults, retirees, veterans, a whole swath of regular, everyday americans are going to get clobbered on day one. Andrew ross sorkin, thank you very much for coming to the Sunday Show. So great to see you. Coming up, how conservatives are using the Abortion Fight to try to take down marriage equality. Next month, the Supreme Court will take up a challenge to a mississippi abortion law, a case that will give the court the opportunity to reverse roe v. Wade. But its also a threat to other critical rights. In a friend of the court brief, the architect of the new Texas Abortion Ban even more restrictive than the mississippi law, argued that the court should overturn not just roe, but two Landmark Lgbt rights cases that legalize Samesex Marriage and decriminalize gay sex. He wrote, these rights, like the right to abortion from roe, are judicial concoctions and there is no other source of law that can salvage their existence. As my next guest tweeted, the focus is on abortion for now, but the longterm plan is to overturn all of these decisions. Joining me now, melissa murray, professor at new York University Law School and msnbc legal analyst. Melissa, thank you very much for coming to the Sunday Show. I caught a glimpse of your tweet yesterday afternoon, and it said, get her on the show, because this is a very important thing that youve highlighted. Tell us more about the legal connection between reproductive rights and marriage equality. So we normally think of these things as siloed, but theyre actually nested in the doctrine. The reproductive rights cases all stem from a decision in 1965 called griswald versus connecticut, which announced a right to privacy and struck down a Connecticut Law that prohibited married people from using contraception. And the logic in that case was that the state cannot go so far as to enter into the marital bedroom to tell married people how to live their lives and whether and when they will have children. That logic was then extrapolated and was used to underwrite the right to an abortion in roe v. Wade in 1973. But it goes even further. It was mentioned by the court in 1967s loving versus virginia, which invalidated bans on interracial marriage. And in 2003, when the court took up the question of samesex sexuality, the court again argued that this right to privacy went so far as to insulate samesex couples from criminal intervention when they engaged in sexual conduct and privacy. And then in 2015, the court again adverting to this idea of the right to make decisions about your intimate life, including whether and with whom to marry could rely on this kind of isolation from government intervention. This right to privacy is not just about reproductive rights. It goes all the Way Lu to all of these different areas of intimate decision making. And that is the key. It is the question of right to privacy. And so, melissa, has the court given any indication that it even wants to revisit Obergofell Or Windsor . Most members of the court have not. And its definitely not on the table for h case. But last term in an opinion, justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito both acknowledged that they might be interested in taking up this question of whether or not there were particularly interests in Samesex Marriage or the right to recognize Samesex Marriage. That was sort of seen as an unusual move by those two members of the court. The question had not been called by anyone. And yet they chose to name it specifically. Theres at least some mention on the court that theres an interest in this idea of eliminating what they call unenumerated constitutional rights. And this again comes up in the whole question of the right to privacy. Nowhere in the constitution is the right to privacy explicitly articulated, but most things in the constitution can nonetheless be recognized by implication. There are a lot of constitutional rights that are not specifically named, like the right to marry. And other kinds of constitutional principles, like executive privilege, which weve heard Ad Nauseam for the last four years. So it was surprising that the court raised this, but not unusual. And you know, speaking of concern about marriage equality, it came up during the Confirmation Hearings for now Justice Amy Coney barrett. Lets have a listen. Do you agree with this particular point of Justice Scalias view that the u. S. Constitution does not afford gay people the fundamental right to marry . If i remember confirmed, you would be getting justice barrett, not Justice Scalia. I dont think anybody should assuMe That just because Justice Scalia decided a decision a certain way that i would, too. But im not going to express a view on whether i agree or disagree with Justice Scalia. And melissa, this gets to the whole question of whether the court has becoMe Too political. And as im sure you well know, both Justices Barrett and thomas last week have spoken out about their concern about the court being viewed as political or that they are a bunch of political hacks. I mean, they are right to worry about the image of impartiality thats been chiseled away of the court, no. Well, they certainly should be worried after whats gone on over the last couple of weeks. And i think this really reached its apex when the court allowed that texas ban, sb8 to go into effect, basically hobbling Abortion Access in one of the most populous states in the union. It wasnt a coincidence that these two members of the court hit the Campaign Trail to argue that the court was not partisan, when the most recent poll yet showed the courts public Approval Rating at the lowest since that poll has been asking about the court. So, again, this is really gotime for the court. I think they are being viewed as more politicized than ever. And its not surprising, given what weve seen. So the real test will come when we see this case come up around the Mississippi 15week Abortion ban. After losing the democratic primary against joyce beatty. Morgan harper is hoping the momentum she gained from her previous race will help her as she sets her sights even higher. And joining me now is Morgan Harper. Ms. Harper, welcoMe To the Sunday Show. Hi, jonathan. Thanks for having me. All right. So, why are you rubbing . Im running because everything is on the line right now. We see that we have attacks on our democracy, on a womans right to choose and we need to stop the far right extremist like j. D. Vance and Josh Men dell who are on the other side in this senate race. We have to recognize doing the same old Thing Isnt going to work. We have to turn out black voters, women, and we have to come with an authentic message and messenger. In many ways i think my story is ohios story. To connect with these voters. I was born here, given up for adoption. My mom immigrated to ohio from trinidad. We went through a lot. It showed me how vulnerable we all are. I worked in the Obama Administration in consumer protection. Thats the message we need to get to the constituencies, to make sure they turn out so we can win this open u. S. Senate seat and expand the democratic majority in the u. S. Senate. As i said before, you are running in the democratic primary. Congressman Tim Ryan is running for that open Senate Seat as well. Running for the primary nomination. In preparation for this i asked the producer, go look for an opinion poll. I want to see where they all are. I want to put up on the screen so folks can visualize this. Tim ryan versus j. D. Vance. Tim Ryan Versus Jane timken. Not listed there is Morgan Harper. The answer you just gave in response to my question of why youre running, ms. Harper, you gave an empassioned answer and an answer quite frankly that reminds me of Stacey Abrams when i interviewed her long before people started talking about who she is. How are you going to break through so that the name Morgan Harper is up there with Tim Ryan as an opponent of Tim Ryan . What were seeing in the past 15 years, doing the same old Thing Isnt working. How do we know . Were losing. We need to win and we need to win badly. There are communities that are suffering every day. How we break through, you Cant Shortcut that. Its got to be door by door, block by block and getting all over this state with a message of how we are going to be different, that i have a Track Record of standing up to corporate interests. Thats whats going to motivate people to turn out and thats whats going to allow us to win this seat. I should add one more thing. Go ahead. About the threat. The threat on the other side is j. D. Vance, john lindell. These guys seek to extend former President Trumps agenda. They do not serve The American public. They are willing to put Power And Greed above our communities and we have to coMe Together with a strategy that is going to stop them and thats why im running for this u. S. Senate seat. The danger is still in as republicans continue to cling to their dear leader Donald Trump. Excerpts from a forthcoming book written by journalist Bob Woodward, Robert Costa reveal a terrifying look into the final days of Trumps Presidency as he attempted to strong arm those closest to him into handing him the election. And apparently it was former Vice President Dan Quayle who stood on the right side of democracy that day when Mike Pence rang him for advice on whether to overturn the election in favor of trump. Yes, Dan Quayle who redeemed himself 30 years after potatogate. Quote, mike, you have no flexibility on this, he is Report Today have said, none. Zero. Forget it. Put it away. Joining me now, two folks who know a little something about reporting on the inner workings of trump world, Carol Leonnis and the Wall Street journals michael bender, author of The New York Times best Selling Book frankly, we did win this election. Thank you very much for coming to the Sunday Show. Im going to start with you, carol. Both of you covered the trump White House in Real Time and you did your own reporting for your respective books and now here is peril from woodward and costa. Carol, you first. Were you surprised by anything that has come out in terms of the reporting from that book compared to what youve reported yourself . Well, you know, i have to be absolutely transparent and say that im a huge fan of Bob Woodward and Bob Costa and theyre friends and bob has been a Role Model for a long time. Add that lack of objectivity to my answer. Please, all you viewers, ill say that for our research for the book we were quite frankly shocked by what we hadnt learned in Real Time for the Washington Post about Mark Milley when we were reporting i alone can fix it. And what Bob And Bob found in their book i think pulls back another layer of the onion and tells you another couple of details that are fascinating about, you know, the tension after the January 6th for Mark Milley. It gives you insight into his conversations with that chinese counterpart which i didnt know about at all. Him warning his chinese counterpart, look, were not going to strike you. Were not going to go to war with you. Ill let you know if that happens. The fear that he had that Donald Trump might launch a war. And the second other really fascinating detail, actually, jonathan, is the extra information about Milley Conceding to House Speaker Nancy pelosi where shes like, you know this president is crazy, right, mark . You know that, right, general . And The General i think his detail knew, ill stipulate, i agree with everything youre saying. And he basically conceded that the president was, in his view, in some mental decline. That is a pretty big deal for The General, the number one military officer, the person who has to give his best Military Advice on deploying troops to the president feeling that the person hes going to be speaking to is in decline. And as you talk about Speaker Pelosi and what he said to general milley up there on the screen. Hes crazy and what he did yesterday is further evidence of his craziness. To you, michael, pick up where carol left off. Anything in peril that yeah. Go ahead. Yeah. I think the through line in all of our books so far is the is what surprised me most in reporting my book and what was seen in the reporting in the others is not necessarily the story of chaos inside the trump White House. I mean, it didnt have to be covering trump and the Trump Administration every day. I did the Wall Street journal as you did for the Washington Post to understand the story come across the alerts on our phones across the country. Cable news headlines every day. What was shocking was how dangerous the people around trump thought he was as he becomes so desperate to Hold On to power in those final months in office. I mean, were talking about a Mark Milley lot these days. In my book he reported that trump asked him and others to shoot americans, jonathan. Thats not an over exaggeration. He wanted peaceful protesters after the George Floyd Murder shot in the leg, their sculls cracked. His own Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo gave the impression to others, as i reported in my book, that he was worried that trump was going to wag the dog, that he might lean into an international conflict in order to affirm his grip and buttress his argument on remaining in office. You know, we have on the screen, you know, quotes from the book and i just want to read them. Pence told trump he had no power to do it, meaning changing the electoral college. Gesturing at some of his supporters already gathered and shouting outside the White House. Trump asked, well, what if these people say you do . The president willing to find authority in the mob if he lacked it in the law. Youve betrayed us. I made you. You were nothing. This is Donald Trump saying this to his Vice President. Carol, the relationship between Trump And Pence, what comes out in peril is a Mike Pence, a Vice President pence who is even seems to be even more willing than we thought to bend over backwards to do trumps bidding. Well, you know the worst phrase in american pun dan try, as i reported in my book, but i will say we did reveal that he wanted desperately, pence did want desperately to try to find a way to appease and bow down to trumps wishes. He wanted to. The Quale Detail is fascinating. Youve got nowhere to go with this. There were many people who told pence, this isnt going to work. One of the most preeminent former judges and constitutional scholars, mike luddick, told pence this in writing two days before January 6th. And actually to be fair, pence was looking for that cover. He was looking for a way to say to Donald Trump, the person who he had hitched his own political aspirations to, hey, look, im not trying to do you in. I cant do something different. I cant do what you want and heres why. Judge luddick gave him that out by saying, look, the law doesnt allow you to reject these votes from these states. I think whats so interesting, jonathan, and i think whats so valuable about you focusing on this question is that that relationship, right . Thats the core of your question. The relationship was one of complete like statueesque obedience for four or five years and then when trump uses this kind of Mob Boss Pressure on the Vice President , when he goes from youve got to do this to, you know, you are calling him various names that we Cant Repeat on television, you are a wuss. When he says those things to him and he said, i made you, right, when he starts that kind of Bullying Pence starts to tilt and when pence is on the grounds of the capitol and he is whisked and evacuated away from the Sen Dmamt ber as rioters sent by Donald Trump reached the building, when that happens, something changes in pence and he becomes 100 convinced, ive got to certify this election. Im going to do my job. And there were many elements of that that were really quite stunning. His insistence even though his secret Service Detail says, weve got to get you out of here, boss. He stays and says, no, no, weve got to finish this. Hes on the phone with the secretary of defense late in the afternoon on the 6th saying, youve got to clear the building because were going to finish this work. You know, michael, one of the other quotes that i didnt read but was reported earlier in the week from peril is Donald Trump also says to Mike Pence Vice President pence when he would not go along is something to the effect of, well, i dont want to be your friend anymore. I mean, its he goes from Mob Boss to toddler in 2. 3 seconds but, michael, Id Love to get your perspective on the relationship between Trump And Pence in this perilous time, no pun intended. Yeah. Definitely. I do think in the i spent a lot of time in my book in sort of run up to January 6th. What is found from pence and the other people around trump was this sort of lack of imagination that something that things could possibly happen. What happened on January 6th, that the riots could possibly happen. They talked themselves into this idea that trump would find his own exit ramp, maybe not direct concession but soMe Trumpian way to say, maybe well come back and get them next time. The reality is he had been promising the country just the opposite, not just for four years as president and in 2016 as a candidate but his entire his entire public life. Youll recall it was you know, The Apprentice was up for an award, he lost and accused the voters of voter fraud. This is a consistent pattern and when it comes to Vice President pence, i think what we see here is Everyone Sort of theres an unwillingness to tell trump directly that this is wrong. What we hear from pence, that he was clear with trump, that he didnt have this authority, that he told them he couldnt do it but people in the room had a different version of that where pence said, you know, i dont think this is correct but well look at whatever your lawyers give us, right . And the president , President Trump hears that second part. Right. When i interviewed him down in maralago, thats what he told me, pence never told him that he wasnt going to, you know, go along with his plan. So, you know, everyone around Trump Kind of thought they were a guardrail against some of these impulses but what turned out to be true is theyre more like Speed Bumps in the run up to January 6th. Michael, that is a great illusion. Folks thought they were guardrails when they were really Speed Bumps. Thank you both very, very much for coming to the Sunday Show. Count me in Me Too im here to demonstrate against the continued incarceration of the guys who went into the Capitol On January the 6th. They they may have committed a crime, but in this country youre presumed innocent until youre convicted. There were a large people who are presumed thats a loaded word. A lot of people went into the capitol. Saturdays floptastic pro Insurrectionist Rally is easy to poke fun of now that its over. Metropolitan police reported 4 arrests of the 400 or so people who bothered to show up but the size of this protest doesnt reflect its real threat and the deafening silence shows the Iron Grip of the foreign president s Big Lie still has on the grassroots of the gop. I want to support the prisoner. I want to know why they still in prison without no do you think anything that happened on January 6th was criminal . Or was a setup. I was here. Joining me now, former Congresswoman And Msnbc political analyst, donna edwards. Chief correspondent at Pbs News Hour Omna Nois and cohost Of Sistersinlaw podcast kimberly storr. Thank you all for being here. Congresswoman, you go first because thats your former your former office. And to have quotes from two folks who are one saying he was there but it didnt happen and the other one quibbling over, you know, storming versus walking through walking through a door at the capitol. This is nonsense. Well, it is completely and i know, you know, in some ways its kind of laughable because dont believe your lying eyes. I mean, we all watched what happened on January 6th. We saw people storming the capitol using every implement, trump flags, confederate flags beating up Police Officers and so i think while this represents a Minority Opinion about what happened on January 6th, it still is not without its danger. And i think it was important for Law Enforcement to have a strong Presence Yesterday even for 400 or so protesters but i also think its important to take this seriously going into the future. Just because there was a small demonstration on saturday at the capitol does not mean that theres not still a larger threat across the country. Right. And you know, to that point, omna, in Rolling Stone theres a headline right Wing Conspiracy theorists spooked themselves into killing their own rally. The lackluster attendance may be connected to Conspiracy Theories that the event was a false Thought Or Honeypot to entrap or arrest attendees. Dont come, everybody going to jail. So to the congresswomans point, just because 400 or so people showed up, less than expected, doesnt mean that the danger still isnt out there. Thats right, jonathan. To be clear, i was there on January 6th. It absolutely did happen. I dont think we can say that enough. Everyone has seen the video. We know what actually transpired that day, but to your point, to the congresswomans point, a few hundred people showing up in support of people who physically and violently stormed the capitol, that is probably not what supporters of the Big Lie perpetuated by former President Trump wanted to see, but it doesnt and it shouldnt hide the fact that there are still millions of americans who believe that to be true. I mean, the latest Poll Numbers show that something like 1 3 of allamericans, that number has held steady from the election, still believe that President Biden won because of widespread voter fraud, which we know is absolutely not true. Yes, while the entirety of Dc Capitol Police showed up yesterday, we had the national guard on stand by, i think what happened on January 6th was the institutional powers, especially in Law Enforcement, woke up to the fact that this online threat that weve seen, this confluence of conspiracy theorists, Antigovernment Militias and so on could translate into real world violence. We saw that happen on the 6th. They caMe Together in that way in ways these groups havent before. So they were prepared this time, but it doesnt mean that those same messages cannot, again, translate into real world violence. I think that is the important part of what happened. Right. You know, to pick up on the what omna said, kimberly, the notion of voter fraud. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik said something, this was reported in the Washington Post, Congresswoman Stefanik claims in ads that democrats seek a, quote, permanent Election Insurrection by providing pathways to citizenship to add to President Biden people who are migrants reflected in the sunglasses he is wearing. This is shades of the white white Replacement Theory that Tucker Carlson is perpetuating continuously on his show over On Fox and far too many people in the republican party actually believe. Do you think that line of argument from stefanik whos now in the house leadership, used to be thought of as a moderate, is that actually could that Gain Traction . I think youre absolutely i think it absolutely can. I think it already has begun to. Look, this isnt the first time in our history or in politics that weve seen really offensively awful language being used, particularly when it comes to immigration policy. Its also not the first time weve seen two things conflated to be equal, particularly from the right. Im thinking about how often the insurrection is compared to protests for racial justice that weve seen in the last couple of years, but certainly this is something different that is happening that at least we havent seen in a while. Usually immigration Antiimmigration Policy is couched in things like economic policy, the need to protect medicare. Right now theyre saying all the quiet parts out loud. They are painting immigrants, people who live in other countries as a threat, as not just criminals, rapists, some of them are good people but as an actual Threat And Part of a democratic Insurrection Ploy to take over the country. It is as offensive as it is baseless but we are seeing this is how the republican party is sort of solidifying over the things Donald Trump did and continuing to be the party of trump when it comes to this really offensive rhetoric. Im afraid that its only going to get worse. You know what, kimberly, im going to take issue with one thing you said. When you said theyre saying the quiet parts out loud. Theyve been saying the quiet parts out loud for so long and so often, there are no quiet parts anymore. Right. Theyre flat out there. Within the republican party, very few people seem to be willing to stand up and say, this is some nonsense. I am tired of it. Except for one guy joining Liz Cheney and adam kin singer, at least theyre still in congress. This person just announced hes leaving congress after the Mid Term elections. Have a watch. Congressman anthony gonzalez. Our politics has gotten so colluded that, you know, that environment for me personally is just not one that im willing to be a part of going forward after serving out my term. You know, Congresswoman Edwards, before we go to break, i mean, ive heard some people say that, you know what, its too bad Congressman Gonzalez is leaving because, you know, that this is how trump wins, when folks who stand up to him leave congress. Just like to point out that Congressman Gonzalez, you know, voted for the president for Donald Trumps agenda when he was in kpong but what do you think about that, the only way to beat back trumpism is to stay in congress at a minimum, if not the republican party . Well, i think its very complicated. I think as the congressman described, that it wasnt just complicated for him as a member of congress but also very threatening to his family. Right, his family. This is a really dangerous tiMe To be opposing Donald Trump within the republican party. While his calculation may have been that he could win the election, he also calculated what then where in the world he would be inside of a republican party that has been completely coopted by Donald Trump and his accolades. Im coming to you and on this sound from general frank mckenzie, the big admission from the united states about that Drone Strike in afghanistan. Have a listen. I offer my profound condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed. This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake. Omna, you have been covering afghanistan and this story from the very beginning. What do you make of the Generals Apology . I thought it was an extraordinary statement, first of all, for the u. S. To come out and say in that way, we got it wrong. It was an extraordinary failure of intelligence. Its also sort of an extraordinary indication of whats ahead for u. S. Intelligence and the future of Counter Terrorism operations there. You have to remember the strike did take place three days after President Biden had suffered the worst Case Scenario when it caMe To the u. S. Withdrawal from afghanistan which is continued loss. There was that horrific Isis Attack outside the airport gate. 175 plus people killed, most of them afghans. It included 13 u. S. Service members. In the final days as the u. S. Is trying to leave afghanistan once and for all, and this was in response to that. Whats really shocking about this is the amount of information that went into it. The pentagon came forward trying to be as transparent as possible and said we had a drone following this person. We had information about an imminent credible threat and they thought the intelligence lined up. They got it horribly wrong and ended up killing a u. S. Aide worker and seven children. It doesnt get worse than that on the ground. The real Problem And Question moving forward is these kinds of Drone Strikes which the u. S. Has been carrying out for decades is exactly what they said they would be leaning on going forward. What they call the over the horizon capabilities. So on the heels of this failure it does call into question what that failure on the ground looks like. This is in the News Business called a very hard turn and how many of you have seen the series White Lotus . Wait. Yall havent seen White Lotus. . Not yet. This isnt going to make any sense to you. Im sure there are folks out there who have watched White Lotus. Lets put this guys picture up. Any of you who have seen White Lotus knows that is mark and what hes talking to his wife about. Now lets go to the Panel And Talk to Nicki Minaj. It is related. She said that the Covid Vaccine could make you impotent. She was talking about her cousins what is it like her friends cousins swollen nether regions and mark in White Lotus thought he had testicular cancer. What you know why i went down this road. But we have this and put up element 6 so i can save myself. Theres no evidence that it happens nor is there any mechanistic reason that it would happen. This is from dr. Anthony fauci to Nicki Minaj about the whole impotence question. Joy reid got into it. The idea of Vaccine Hesitancy and people waiting to see if they want to get the vaccine. Kimberly, are we ever going to get over this moment in this country where people are either are either vaccine hesitant or still taking that wait and see attitude over the pandemic and a vaccine a vaccine which has been proven effective in keeping people alive and not getting seriously sick . So what i will say is this could be an opportunity to do exactly just that. We have seen a lot of Vaccine Hesitancy, among a lot of people, including younger people. And i know anecdotally and from the research is one of the things young people have expressed are fears about things like the impact on their reproductive health, so ill put it that way. But its a real thing. So in the beginning when the vaccine started, you know, it was out on an Emergency Basis because we needed to get people vaccinated. We didnt have a lot of data. Now we are 10, 11 months out from those first vaccinations and we do have data. We have people who are vaccinated who have had children without any complications. We have seen we have more data so that dr. Fauci can say to these young folks, actually now we do know that its not a risk to you. We can debunk some of these things that are happening with real information. So the fact that this story came up, if youre looking for a reason to justify why were still talking about it, i think that is it. This is an opportunity to say there is data. There is real proof that there isnt a risk to this and the risk to not being vaccinated is so large that people ought to really do it. And, you know, on a more serious note, Chris Rock, the great comedian Chris Rock tweeted out this morning just after we went on air, hey, guys, i just found out i have covid. Trust me, you dont want this. Get vaccinated. So that is from comedian Chris Rock. You guys are sticking around for one more panel because weve got the soundoff and thats going to be coming after the break. Were going to sound off to the other Sunday Shows so dont go anywhere. Pulitzer prizes won by writers all around the country on their great reporting on the collusion between Trump And Russia and we all know now it was funded by Hillary Clinton. Its an absolute disgrace. It makes our country look like a Banana Republic and it just shouldnt have happened. Was hillary Hillary Clinton . Have we gone back in tiMe To 2016 . Eric trumps russian fueled diatribe against Hillary Clinton actually took place this morning and later in the interview on Fox Trump also nonchalantly teased the collapse of civilization as we know it. Do you want your father to run again . You know, i do because honestly hes the only person who can save this country. Not to be outdone, Senator Ted Cruz also stopped by fox this morning because nothing says effective legislator quite like spreading Conspiracy Theories about President Biden. I would say its a disturbing pattern where it seems like they cut off his microphone any time his handlers dont want. Theres no doubt President Bidens capacity is severely diminished and they amplify that impression when they keep him locked up in a basement all day long. You know whats a disturbing pattern is having to watch ted cruz. My panel is back. Ill run down the line. Any reaction you have to Eric Trump, Congresswoman Edwards . Well, i didnt think id ever have to watch Eric Trump again so thanks for that, jonathan. Sorry. Look, they all View Being in the White House as a drifting moment. They want it back. We have to push back on the nonsense. Please dont make me watch him again. You know what, i am i am really sorry to you and america. But still, kimberly . Yeah, look. His fortunes are trying to ensure that his Father Or Someone else in the family continues to be politically relevant. The more we talk about him the more we help him so im with the congresswoman on this one. Lets stop talking about Eric Trump. Omna, i want to play for you, this is some sound not from today but its from thursday but we must talk about this. This is the Lieutenant Governor of texas. Listen to this. The revolution has begun, a silent revolution to take over this country. Youre talking about millions and millions and millions of new voters and they will thank the democrats and biden for bringing them here. Who do you think theyre going to vote for . So this is this is trying to take over our country without firing a shot. You know, omna, im playing that for you because we talked about this on Pbs News hour on friday. Once again, this is white Replacement Theory thats out there but talking about a very real issue. This is not our democrats pulling in new voters, this is about refugees looking for opportunity and a better life because they cant find it in the countries that they would actually rather not leave. So the underlying facts here are really important to point out. Whats driving that conversation now among many republicans is an increased number of migrants who have now made their way to one part of Southern Texas known as Del Rio. Many of them are sheltering under a bridge. The sheer volume arriving at this time has overwhelmed the u. S. Immigration system. They Cant House them properly, care for them in a safe and orderly delay. Many of us have talked about this over the years. Regardless of who has been in charge, we have not been able to handle these increases that occur from tiMe To time. You just mentioned about the language of people. Weve all seen on the far right and its making its way into the more mainstream republican leadership and others. That is worth noting. That is the exact same language We Saw among people who marched in charlottesville. Its the same language left behind in the manifesto of the El Paso shooter. The same kind of language left in the manifesto of the christchurch new Zealand Shooter who specifically targeted muslims there in recent history. There are real world consequences to that kind of language. To see it showing up in elected officials and political rhetoric is something worth noting. The quiet parts being said out loud, meaning there are no more quiet parts. Congresswoman edwards, dr. Fauci was on im sorry, was on cnn and talking about boosters. Have a listen. Well talk about it on the other side. We fully anticipate that within a period of a couple to three weeks that there will be enough information on the data that will be presented to the fda by J J and by moderna that well be able to proceed and get those data analyzed to be able to move with a booster in those categories. We dont believe its going to be a considerable period of time. Congresswoman edwards, how important is it that the administration just make a decision, make an announcement on boosters . Well, im going to point the administration to its own theology and that is to follow the science. I think its going to be really important, not just for the united states but for the rest of the world for us to understand who needs boosters, when theyre needed, and what sort of at what duration because it really does impact both our ability to continue to deliver vaccines to The American public but also to deliver them to the world and the administration really has to clean up the mixed messaging thats been coming from the White House, the fda. Its confusing to the public and that has to be straightened out so we all understand where were headed in these next several months. Kimberly, im going to go to another piece of sound from not today but from earlier in the week and this is from Kayla Maroney testifying before congress about how the fbi dropped the ball on their nasser probe. Have a listen. This was very clear, Cookie Cutter Pedophilia and abuse and this is important because i told the fbi all of this and they chose to false phi my report and to not only minimize my abuse but silence me yet again. I thought given the severity of the situation they would act quickly for the sake of protecting other girls but instead it took them 14 months to report anything when larry nasser, in my opinion, should have been in jail that day. Kimberly, incredible testimony, blunt, emotional, powerful testimony from Kayla Maroney. Would love your reaction to what she had to say but also what it means for Law Enforcement. The fbi. We look at the fbi as a place that you tell them about a crime, theyre going to go investigate it. Yeah. That doesnt happen for everyone unfortunately, first of all, kayla and the other women who testified and gave that riveting testimony, there are no words for the bravery that that took and im deeply i deeply appreciate what they have done. Unfortunately, again, we have seen historically that there has been a pattern for when people report crimes, particularly when they are women, when they are young and they are women of color they tend not to be believed or the urgency of what theyre reporting seems to be ignored. I think there was a onetwo punch in news. One was about how the fbi failed to take these seriously and chose to cover it up. And we havent talked been r kelly whose trial is going on where his multitude of victims were taken seriously enough. That is in large part of our justice system. Hopefully these high profile cases will work to change that. I mean, it was just to hear from all of them was truly, truly incredible and heartbreaking and hopefully what they told The American people and told congress will lead to some change. I want to thank my panel, former congresswoman donna edwards, omna nuaz, my new colleague, our new colleague as an Msnbc Contributor and kimberly atkinsstorr. Thank you all for coming here. In a statement explaining his vote, he said during the attack itself, the predabandoned his post while many members asked for help. Thus further endangering all present. These are fundamental threats not just to peoples lives but to the foundation of our republic. Gonzalez has caught all kinds of conservative hell ever since. So much so that he announced he wouldnt seek reelection next year, and he didnt hold anything back in an interview with The New York Times. Gonzalez said, quote, politically, the environment is so toxic, especially in our own party right now. And he called trump, quote, a cancer for the country. And after trump said good riddance in reaction to gonzalezs retirement, gonzalez said, and i quote, i havent cared what he says or thinks since January 6th, outside when he continues to lie about the election, which i have a problem with. Tis a pity more republicans like gonzalez and Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger dont have the gumption to push back against the big Lie And Call trump contactually what he is, a cancer for the country. Instead, Kevin Mccarthy carries trumps water by furthering his lies and turning a blind eye to the daernl he poses to his party and the public. We are grateful the J6 Jamboree fizzled out quickly, but the republican party has seized to live in a realitybased world. A Cnn Poll had this stunning data point. 78 of republicans believe that President Biden didnt win the election. Thats because far too many people who know better continue to aid and abet the Big Lie by either remaining silent about the truth or worse, perpetuating it by supporting desperate and destructive recount efforts seeking to turn fantasy into reality. Gonzalez says that most of his political energy will be spent making sure Donald Trump doesnt ever become president again. And he got an able assist from kinzinger who released a Video Statement saturday calling on silent house republicans to denounce trumps lies. The time for hiding is over. The stakes are too high. This authoritarian and truth starved party will not get better unless you stand up. That admonition doesnt just go for the republican party. It goes for the united states of america too.
