The same mindset, and its highly disturbing you still have people in america who want to take on democracy and destroy it. And this Afternoon Capitol Police arrested a man for a Weapons Violation saying that he brought a long knife to the rally. Lets go to Nbcs Elson Barber joining us from there. I know the crowds are much smaller, but for the most part with they remained peaceful . Yeah, i mean by and large they have. As you mentioned there was that one individual who according to Capitol Police was arrested. He is facing a weapons charge. They say he had a knife. We saw just a little while ago someone appear to be detained or at least surrounded and then escorted out of the area by Capitol Police in full riot gear. They sort of circled around this individual and backed out with them taking it behind the police barricade line. That was one of a couple of incidents we saw today. Apart from that, though, thick things really did seem by and large peaceful. This was not a huge ewhen you look at what was expected. You can see what is left of this rally right now, the stage being taken down as we speak. The permit for this rally was for 700 people. Our best guess is there were maybe about 200 people who appeared to be here for the rally. There are far more Capitol Police, d. C. Police, other Law Enforcement officials here. Theres much more fencing, a much bigger Police Presence Response than necessarily the crowd warranted. One thing that i think we have to kind of remember is just speaking with individuals in the crowd it was hard to find anyone who had a consistent or factual reason for being here. I asked one person why they wanted to come here and they said because they thought that people who are nonviolent protesters were being detained indefinitely. When i asked for an example of who, they look theyve had about 600 people give or take charges for offenses on what happened here on January 6th, best count by the Associated Press is about 63 people are still behind bars. But when i asked who is it you think may have been a nonviolent defender who may have been detained, couldnt get a clear answer on that. And also said in the same breadth the entire thing on January 6th was a setup and obviously both things cannot be true. He said it was infiltrators and then he said patriots were being unfairly detained in jail because of something they did on January 6th nonviolent but also said it was a government setup. So things that did not make sense. And one thing brought up by organizers at this event to speak was the girlfriend of someone who is detained and in custody. And according to the organizer again they said these were nonviolent defenders protesting on their behalf. When you look at that individuals Arrest Warrant he was according to police caught on Body Camera striking Police Officers with sticks. A small crowd did remain peaceful. In terms of any sort of what was happening here or any basis of reality that didnt happen at all. You know what, my friend, im going to give you an a for effort for trying to make sense of the illogical. I think halfway through i would have set forget it. But welldone. So poor attendance at Todays Event could be the result of Creeping Paranoia in extremist far right chat forums. Chat users expressed concern the rally could be a trap to arrest more people involved in the January 6th attack on the capitol. Joined now by ben collins. He cowrote this article. Its an interesting one, ben. What exactly were these Chat Room users saying about this . Theyre saying this was an elaborate trap by the fbi to arrest more people. They thought once they showed up to the Rally Theyd be coerced and theyd stay away from their Community And Extremist movements. This has been the Talking Point for the last eight months since January 6th. The Stuff Allison was just talking about this with this discordant thought that simultaneously the people being arrested deserve to be released from prison and are political prisoners, and also this didnt really happen, those are the things you here in these spaces. Because they cant get a real narrative what happened around January 6th they havent been able to organize nationally at that level. Theyve targeted antitrans protests. Theyve targeted School Boards. The proud boys have targeted School Boards. Because they know if they show up without much notice theyre not going to have the eye of the feds. So the organizer, ben, is quoted as saying rumors of the false flad attacks are planted by Nay Sayers Who Want Trump supporters to be led to Thinking Nonaction or violent action is the only answer. Whats your sense of that . I mean the level of that and how much it permeates these groups . Well, thats a Conspiracy Theory on a Conspiracy Theory on a Conspiracy Theory. Thats very deeply paranoid stuff. You know, at The End of the day theres two things going on here. There is a lot of movement in these spaces online for what they call justice for January 6th prisoners. In the extremist spaces they dont want to admit fault at any point. They think theyre all permanently innocent and theyre fighting in the revolution. So that is an issue for them. But they dont really have the numbers in real life to make people show up and talk about it. They have the numbers for the lies about Voter Fraud and other cultural war issues, but this is just not resonating in the same way. This was a big gamble for matt. So if people are staying away based on the fear of possible arrests, more people wanted in the January 6th attacks, i mean what does this tell you . Can it also tell you theres a waning sense of Influence And Desire to participate, or am i just trying to put a positive spin on this . Theres a waning sense of willing to be arrested for it, certainly. But honest to god i think the spaces are bigger than ever. The anger and the furor is larger than ever. They just dont have what they they dont have what they thought was diplomatic immunity which they thought they had on January 6th. They thought they were, you know, onto something. Now they realize theyre basically at war with the government. But also the Culture War issues have shifted since then. They are focused on Voter Fraud and things like that but theyre not really focused on January 6th. January 6th was a big embarrassment to them. If this was a rally about the Arizona Audit or something or other Culture War fights, you know, things that are happening in these School Boards all throughout the country im sure more people would have showed up. Ben collins, awfully interesting talking to you every single time. Your world, man. Props to you. Thank you. Dont come over here. Its terrible, yeah. All right, thank you. Lets go now to another developing story this hour. This is about the pentagon having admitted to that Drone Strike. It was meant to target terrorists. Instead it killed ten afghan civilians and that includes seven children. It did not kill any isisk fighters. The military had previously defended the attack which game days after 13 u. S. Military members were killed in that explosion at the kabul airport. U. S. Centcom commander apologizing. It was a mistake. At last hour armed Services Committee Member ruben gave me his reaction to someone who served in iraq. I think we didnt make the right call. These typefes of Kill Decisions need to be made at the higher level by Secretary Austin and not at the Command Level which i still dont think they have the full scope of a war or of a situation to make a decision like this. Joining me now with reaction is congressman Adam Smith from washington state. Good to have you here to sort of talk about all this. Tell me what struck you from what you heard from general Mackenzie Yesterday . First of all, just an enormous tragedy to have civilians killed and so many families and friends impacted, you know, really strikes me is just the horror of that event. And i dont think we should moval past that. The second thing that strikes me is it really points out why we needed to get out of afghanistan, why the mission that we were trying to conduct there, you know, had far, far more risk than benefit. And, you know, fundamentally and we can certainly argue about the details of how it was done, but fundamentally i hope people understand this is the reason that, a, we needed to get out of afghanistan, and b, we need to be much more aware of the limitations of Military Power to protect us from threats. I guess the last thing i would say is we do have to remember, you know, wed just had the attack on the airport. Right. You know how vulnerable that target was and the Threat Stream was enormous in the morning leading up to that strike. And if there had been a Car Bomber you have all those people surrounding the airport. You would have had hundreds of casualties. So i understand the urgency, but it points out just how difficult these things are and why we need to be, you know, a lot, lot less willing to use this tool. So to that last point relative to this happening in the wake of our 13 u. S. Service members being killed in that tragic attack, how much pressure might that incident have put on our leaders to do something about it . I mean, you can imagine the american clamoring just average citizenry saying get them, you know, we want revenge, right . Let us not forget that, you know, dozens of afghans were killed in that attack as well and hundreds were injured. So it wasnt just protecting americans. There were afghans at risk who were surrounding that airport and trying to get out. But the answer to your question is absolutely. I think the pressure was, you know, we didnt see that one coming. And who knows how many warnings had come in around that time that we had said no, we just dont know enough to act on that. I think Human Nature tells you there was going to be a far higher willingness to believe that the information was accurate and needed to be acted on because of what had happened, No Doubt about it. So then what is the armed Services Committee going to do to address this tragedy to those questions that youre bringing up right now . Will there be hearings . Do you think someone is going to be held responsible . First of all, all the time not kid ourselves. It happened. The people are dead and there isnt a damn Thing Anybody is going to do to bring them back. The idea we have to hold people accountable, we have to fix it, youre not going to fix it. Youre just not. Countless mistakes have been made during It Course of 20 years. What we are going to do is we are going to focus on not using the military as aggressively as we have, and thats a huge part of bidens agenda. You know, getting out of iraq, getting out of afghanistan, getting out of the business of thinking that the united States Military can show up in a country and fix it at the point of a gun is the number one most important thing were going to do, which is why people should be a lot less harsh on President Biden for making the decision to get us out of afghanistan. So, you know, thats what were going to try to do. You know, dealing with threats like this is very, very difficult. Dealing with threats like this with an excessive reliance on the military creates problems like this. Thats what were going to do. Let me switch gears here and talk about a new book which is revealing some somewhat shocking information about an alleged close call with china, according to excerpts that have been released from The Book peril. General Mark Milly called his chinese counterpart twice this to assure him or reassure him that the u. S. Was not going to attack china. So is a chair of Armed Service who has had interactions with milly, how do you interpret this . Its very straightforward. And im a huge fan of Chairman Millys. Were worked closely together for a long time, and we talked a lot about the facts and issues leading up to the transition of power. Chairman milly has been put in an impossible situation and i think handled it really well. I do think this story about china is first of all overblown. First of all as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff there are regular time he tries to reach out to military leaders in china and elsewhere to try to make sure that we calm nerves. And second, given what happened on January 6th, given, you know, post Election-controversy'>Election Controversy we all saw as trump supporters desperately tried to have him cling onto power it wasnt just china. All across the globe people were looking at this and going, you guys okay . Whats going on over there, and whats that going to mean, okay . I dont think there was any sort of close call with china. I said this when i spoke to Bob Woodward about this, the many threats i saw from Donald Trump, the biggest wish being a fascist take over of our country, you know, in my interactions with trump and the trump administration, he seemed very reluctant to go to War For Aviter of reasons, but it was perfectly appropriate for Chairman Milly to call up china and say, hey, dont jump the gun here. Whatever you may be seeing its all good. To make sure that we didnt stumpal into some sort of conflict. And also this wasnt some secret Phone Call. Chairman milley talked with other dod leaders. I think it was just a very prudent step by the chairman of the joint chief of staffs given what was going on. Tuesday trump said general milly should be tried for treason if The Books claims are true. Obviously you dont think these Phone Calls sound like Treason Or Anything close to it. You said the word overblown, all the discussion about this. Overblown because trump would try to corral this kind of thing, just use it to his advantage . Is that whats happening here . Yeah, no, look, someone asked me about this the other day, and this is very simple. For trump supporters either you are 100 behind the leader, the head of the cult, Donald Trump, or youre treasonous. So the fact Chairman Milley has said or done anything critical about trump by definition by trump makes him beneath contempt but thats their insanity. Thats not the facts. He was doing his job as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. Do you think as we look at the security surrounding the rally today, i mean the rally in support of those folks arrested on January 6th, how difficult is it for some of these people to let it go, let their Support Go for Donald Trump . Its incredibly difficult because you have to understand that the way this has been portrayed and youve done Great Reporting on this. The way this has been portrayed in Conservative Media is its an existential threat, Donald Trump standing between them and theyve lost their respect for a representative democracy. Theyve lost their respect for the idea we can come together collectively and discuss ideas. It is as they said a 9 11 moment. Thats not whats happening, but if you have that mindset that, you know, leads to the type of extreme Behavior Weve seen all across the country. And one of the things we need to do is get back to explaining to people how representative Democracy And Politics works. You know, you work together, you dont always get your way but we can work together to solve problems. And trump is just beating that Drum Day in and day out, but weve got to work against it to make sure the country continues to function. Okay, congressman Adam Smith. To get a Boost Eror not to get a booster for months thats been the question. Next is the explanation behind the Fdas Answer. Next is the exd the Fdas Answer different. Oh, we can help with that. For skin that never holds you back dont settle for silver 1 for diabetic dry skin 1 for Psoriasis Symptom Relief and 1 for eczema Symptom Relief Gold Bond Champion your skin the fda is dealing a major setback to the white houses plan to widely distribute Booster Shots by The End of the year. Nbcs Mike Memoli in ruhoebth beach, delaware. Why did the Fda Vote against the Booster Plan . Reporter well, alex, the short answer is they want to see more data. What we saw yesterday is pfizer of course, the pharmaceutical Giant Maker of one of these vaccines as well as outside experts presenting information to this Fda Panel of experts arguing that because there is a decline in the efficacy of these vaccines over time a third Booster Shot was warranted for a broad population of americans. But some of these experts said they werent sure the benefits here potentially outweighed the risk, specifically the risk to younger adult males there appears to be some Heart Inflammation or that could be the case. Heres one of those experts laying what the rationale was yesterday. Take a listen. And weak likely decrease the incident which is associated with contagiousness. Then the question becomes what will be the impact of that on the ark of the pandemic which may not be that much . I guess in summary i would say while i would probably support a three Dose Recommendation for those over 60 or 65, i really have trouble supporting this as written for anyone greater than or equal to 16. Reporter and alex, exactly the final outcome that we saw here yesterday. The Fda Panel here recommending a Booster Shot for those 65 and older as well as those who might be in hazardous work conditions, those first responders that might benefit from this extra dose of immunity. From the white Houses Perspective obviously theres some confusion here, but theyre making the case their job all along is to be prepared for whatever the science leads them to. Theyre ready for unveiling more of these Booster Shots, putting them out if needed. But obviously at this point theres still time before that for the general public. Joining me now to further discuss professor at the Boston School of Medicine And Msnbc medical contributor. What as i welcome you, my friend what is your take on the Fdas Decision and how far might this go to dispel those who dont want to get vaccinated because they say, oh, we dont know enough about it . I mean to listen to the carefully scrutiny in this discussion it shows that the fda is taking this extremely seriously. Theyre not just like stamp of approval on it. Thats right, alex. And what a difference from about a year ago when you had, you know, a white House Pulpit talking about the convalescent plasma. Youll remember right before the Rnc Committee meetings and things like that. This is different. It really shows how rigorously the data is being looked at. The question was those over 16 do see a benefit and enough of a Safety Data to say a third dose is going to be helpful. What you just heard they saw data here and from israel those above 68 they chose above 65 there is both a waning of immunity against infection and also severe disease. And an israeli study that says when those over 60 were given this third booster they both had improvement over hospitalizations and also against infections. They dont have the same type of data for those under 60 because Israel Hasnt gotten around to vaccinating all their young. They dont have as long a Safety Data for those under 60 as well. Particularly as you noted the younger men where theres a slight uptick of the inflammation of the heart. Much higher risk of Perry Carditis and myocarditis. I think youre going to see here the fda has to consider whether theyre going to consider the recommendation from an external committee, which i think they usually do. It would be kind of rare if they dont know. And the cdc is going to decide who makes up that high risk as both occupational high risk but also medical high risk, that those under 65 who have obesity, diabetes, other conditions could fall into that category as well. Okay, let me talk about Pfizer And Moderna here because this new report by the cdc found Pfizer Vaccine is significantly less effective in the longterm at preventing serious cases of the disease. You have moderna, though, that retains nearly the same efficacy after four months. So compare those two and what is that telling you about the likelihood of Booster Shots for either . I think the moderna submitted their request for that booster a little bit later. So youre going to see another meetingch and a couple of types of data. There is waning immunity with moderna as well. The company released a Press Release that said youre twice as more likely, 46 more likely to see cases of severe disease. By the way were talking small numbers. This is like 13 versus 6 for those six months or so out from the vaccines. Theres dempt waning, but overall the Cdc Study from the Vision Network that looks at Hospital Admissions and er visits shows Modernas Protection against those types of vizerates uzmuch higher. The thought is this could be because moderna is higher dose vaccine, spacedout, a month versus three weeks. And weve been talking about the dose is why we eventually might need a third booster. But i think youre probably going to see a booster in the same vein for moderna and the part im really looking forward to is the Johnson Johnson because the same studies from the cdc did Show A Decrease in efficacy against severe disease in those who got Johnson Johnson, and that data also is coming out in a couple of weeks. Flu season is approaching. People have questions about mixing the two so well speak about that next time. The biden administration is outlining a new Strategy Today to address the increase of thousand of haitian immigrants in del rio, texas. They conclude in terms of the options sending them right back to haiti. Democratic Congressman Ruben Gaigo giving Me Hisrection of this handling of the situation in the last hour. I do think the biden administration is doing the right thing. Theyre going to give these people their opportunity to request asylum. And if they meet all of those requirements then they will get that status, refugee status. Now, if they dont then they have to be deported back. And i know its hard for people to accept that, but at The End of the day, you know, we dont have we dont follow these refugee processes its going to actually make our processes even more dull. U. S. Officials have temporarily closed the only Border Crossing in del rio, texas, as even more migrants are expected to show up. Also this Breaking News from florida on the disappearance of 22yearold Gabby Petito who went on a Crosscountry Road Trip with her fiance and never returned. Theyre searching for that fiance, Brian Laundrie who has also now vanished. Emily, welcome to you. I know police spoke just a short time ago. Can you update us on what were hearing . Reporter hey are there, yet another twist in this alarming story. Right now North Port police are canvassing a 25,000 Acre Reserve in florida in search of Brian Laundrie. Brian laundrie is the fiance of missing gabby petito. He is Person Of Interest in the case and seen as a critical figure in solving the alarming disappearance of the travel blogger. His family notified police last night that they havent seen brian since tuesday. North Port Police saying theyre not sure why they just brought that information to their attention but it has launched an extensive search for Brian Laundrie again in that massive thick reserve, an area were told brian is familiar with. Still, police Say Brian could be in danger. Listen here. His family says that this is a place he frequents. They also believe this is where he came, and again, this is according to them. Weve got, you know, five, six different agencies that are out there. Weve got 50 plus folks. Weve had drones in the air. Weve got bloodhounds, canines, fourwheelers, side by sides certainly out there. Its very wet. Reporter on the advice of counsel Brian Laundrie has remained tightlipped since returning home on September 1st with his van but without gabby petito. His silence has been a point of Frustration And Contention among both Gabbys Family but also Law Enforcement. The couple has had a history of fighting. We saw that play out in police Body Camera video in utah from last month, an emotional gabby saying they have been fighting all morning. At least a halfdozen Law Enforcement agencies are weighing in on this complicated case. Still, alex, it feels like were ending the week with more questions than answers. Boy, you said it. Okay, thank you so much from los angeles. Lets try to get some answers now. Im joined by msnbc legal analyst. So brian staying silent apparently on the advice of his lawyer who says specifically the warning that any statement made will be used against you is true regardless of whether my client had anything to do with ms. Petitos disappearance. So now hes also gone missing. Some accuse him of going into hiding. How much more can you interpret these actions as suspicious . While its true that lawyers like me often tell our clients just dont speak to the police, in a case like this if there is zero point zero exposure, it might be safe to at least tell the police where a missing person is. But then i have to fall back onto Defense Attorneys generally should tell anyone whos considered a Person Of Interest to decline to speak to the police, because candidly once youre a Person Of Interest police clearly yet not officially have indicated theyre narrowing their focus on you. So i guess the question, though, if brian Isnt Guilty of anything, would there be wisdom in offering legal advice to say, okay, at least make a statement, at least give some of the bare facts the last time you saw her, where you saw her, what the circumstances were and just, you know, call it a day at that . I hear that very often as a criminal Defense Attorney especially in cases with missing persons. But, again, if he has any exposure if for example, lets just say hypetheticly there was a situation where drugs were involved, maybe that Person Wasnt involved in hurting anyone but drugs were involved or some other criminal activity, then if theres any exposure whatsoever you have to advise your client to not get themselves into anymore trouble. The road to conviction is littered with false confessions. And there are many instances as im sure youve covered many stories where other defendants in very different situations spoke to police, gave confessions accidently and ended up in prison. But i do understand as a human that you have a situation where parents want to at least get a clue where their daughter is. And the reality is this is not the 1970s. You cant just jump into your El Camino and vanish into the night. Everything this couple was doing was tracked on social media, by their iphone, by communications. You have time stamps. Youre looking at video right thereof our advances in Body Cameras with police where you can watch the Police Interaction with the time Stamp Right up there on the top right. So police are going to be able to piece together a lot even without laundrie coming forward and giving them information. They may not have revealed what that data and information is yet. Okay. And theyd be doing that because theyre trying to play things close to the vest and pursue their investigation right without You And Me talking about on television. Yeah, this may be the words of a jaded criminal Defense Attorney, but the reason that i think police will name someone just a Person Of Interest, which is a relatively reasoned term only came about since about the 90s is to stop short of saying, hey, we think youre a bad actor. And when you do that you can arguably say, well, youre not a suspect so you could technically talk to us and we may not want to mirandize you because were all just friends here so maybe you should come forward. Its all part of the police strategy, and police are very good at getting information. The federal government has an over 90 conviction rate. Its because Law Enforcement is good at what they do. Let me ask you about a time lapse on a couple of things. Apparently Brian Laundrie returns home on September 1st but theres no report about gabby not being with him for 10, 11 days. The fact the family apparently says theyve not seen brian this week since tuesday, only just reporting that to the police. The passage of time, how does that complicate anything in an investigation like this . Every day that passes with a missing person makes it harder and harder for police to find the person because evidence dissipates, witnesses move on, witnesses who may have had good information at the time it just didnt seem important to them, theyve moved on. I mean youd be amazed how quickly eyewitnesses and memory fades. Its not years. Its sometimes days, sometimes even minutes. Okay. Danny, Thats Kind of sobering. Good to see you, my friend. It appears for youer people are coming out for Todays Rally in washington. The tale of the turnout next. W. The tale of the turnout next after my dvt blood clot. I was uncertain. It had gathered in support of the people arrested and charged following the January 6th riot. Joining me now Associate Professor of Political Science at howard university, also Cynthia Howard at american University And Author of the Book Hate in the homeland the new global far right. Ladies, professors, its good to see you both. Thank you for joining me. Cynthia, ill go to you first here. The Rally Organizers were expecting hundreds of people. I believe they got a permit for 700. Certainly a lot more of them showed up. Is there any reason in your mind fewer people attended this rally . Good question, alex. We saw the same thing with the unite 2 rally in 2018 where really protesters were outnumbered by even journalists much less counterprotesters. Weve seen this kind of thing before, that people get scared off. It doesnt mean, though, we should be any less concerned about the spread of Disinformation And Conspiracy theories online. Even that 2019 unite the rally, too, was followed by terrible terrorist incidents. We still see the kind of Conspiracy Theories people still very much believe, you know, they are dealing with an illegitimate Election. They believe in disffrgz and false information and that these are political prisoners theyre supporting. They didnt come. Maybe they were deterred by the high Law Enforcement turnout, maybe they were deterred by the belief this was a false flight operation. I know this is your neighborhood and you were a witness, in fact, to the January 6th insurrection. Is there a sense of relief for you that nothing like January 6th transpired or is there no relief because there were a couple hundred people who showed mup. You all can see it but i flashed an enormous smile when i saw that crowd had dissipate. I have things i want to do today. I think we dont think about d. C. As a place where every day people live, and its wonderful to in the Nations Capitol where people can voice their opinions, but its terrifying to be in the Nations Capitol when people have complete disregard for american democracy, our systems, for the businesses around here. Ive got to say im very happy to see this crowd has dissipated and this did not turn out like we thought it might. But i am also worried to the earlier point about these things happening in spaces that we dont get to see, where they become a bit more dangerous before they come out again. Let me ask you, cynthia, about those who organized this particular rally. We know the Lead Organizer worked on the trump 2016 president ial campaign. But the ideology theyre putting out here for this particular rally, how widespread to do you fear it is . Is there any part of it that you think is diminishing . I mean you made the point that, yes, there is so much Law Enforcement presence. That might have been a deterrent for people to come. But might it also be the fact that Donald Trumps influence is waning somewhat on this specific topic of a stolen Election . Right, alex. I mean we are seeing that the influence for sure is declining. Its very clear even in Polling Data that fewer republicans are supporting him and less likely to see that support. But were still seeing millions of people actually believe the Election itself, the 2020 president ial Election was illegitimate, believing false information. And of course we have an epidemic really of misinformation, disinformation about a variety of things including the pandemic and vaccines. So we have this real problem with people who believe false information. And in this case this rally was organized around even, you know, an even deeper set of misinformation and false information these people somehow have been arrested for their political beliefs. I mean they were arrested for criminal offenses. So theyre calling them political prisoners or martyrs, which is a way of twisting or manipulating people into believing that americans are being persecuted for their political beliefs which is patently untrue. How do you interpret that point there cynthia was making . I think its important to acknowledge that people are making decisions based on different information environments. I worry i read in the Wall Street Journal this week about facebook and its involvement and what it knows or doesnt know about how humans engage each other and how our Society Functions as a result of its work. And im very worried about the misinformation that happens. Im very worried about the idea we may never get to a place where we have common understanding of the truth. And i think its necessary for us to have that, a common understanding of Truth And Humanity if we want to get to a place where we can get some progress on things like coronavirus, progress on things like accepting Elections when they happen in a fair and open manner. Yeah, i still recall the phrase, alternative facts. That one took me a long time to get my head around like wait a minute a fact is a fact. What do you mean alternative fact. Ladies, thank you so much. I look forward to speaking with you both again. So hes made a list and hes checking it twice but were not talking about santa. And my colleague is joining us from cape canaveral, florida, where hes been following everything all day today. How is spacex preparing for their arrival, their splashdown in the atlantic . Well, were told there is a possibility there might be a big event that will happen sunday, but well tell you from a technical standpoint. Theyve already deployed one of their recovery ships right out here from cape canaveral. Into the Atlantic Ocean right now ready for them to splashdown. We actually watched as that ship made its way out of Port Canaveral just yesterday. The crew spent the last day doing what many of us would normally do if we were in space. Taking plenty of selfies, of photos. They had a big, hearty breakfast. They woke up today to the song its a beautiful day by bono and fitting because they had a Phone Call can bono from the Space Capsule just last night. This is one, alex, really one for the record books. Yes, of course its the first all civilian spaceflight ever. You have the first black woman to make it into space as a pilot, only the third black woman actually to make it into space, and theyre going to be landing here in the Atlantic Ocean, something we havent done since the apollo days, so plenty of firsts. But what about the Reentry Program . I was lucky enough to talk with the astronaut, Victor Glover who was actually on that same dragon, Space Vehicle this past spring as he returned to earth. And i asked him what will the reentry be like, what will the next few hours be like . The spacecraft will conduct a series of burns to decrease their speed and altitude, and they will start to interface with the atmosphere and that will slow them down. They will experience an increase in g and it actually is really interesting to experience that g after experiencing weightlessness. It really stands out. Reporter they were quite busy over the course of their three days. Not only did they speak with bono but also spoke with Tom Cruise who alex is hoping to shoot a movie in space at some point. They played the ukulele, did some artwork, spoke at the new York Stock exchange yesterday. Theyve been quite busy. And i cant say i blame them. Oh, my gosh, me too. Can you imagine those photos . Id give anything to go up. Anyways, pretty cool. Reporter put all my selftimer selfies to shame. 100 . New insight now on the twists and turns of the Republican Party. Congressman Anthony Gonzalez has announced on thursday hes not going to seek reElection. He cited the toxic dynamics inside the Republican Party. Add to this a new attempt on friday to bolster the Big Lie from the former president. My next guest has been busy writing about all of this. Joining me now philip bump, Washington Correspondent for the washington post. Your post the nontrump gop erodes a little further. Its about congressman gonzalezs decision. Hes one of the few house republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump. So is this ultimately good or bad for democrats . I mean i think its bad from democrats from the standpoint you have a Republican Party which has very visible internal dissent against Donald Trump. There isnt any individual standing up and being that counterweight to Donald Trump. In part because Donald Trump and his fans are so assiduous about twisting arms and even at times threatening people like Representative Gonzalez to keep them quiet and get them out of congress. Theres this concerted effort to keep trump as that center of power in the gop, and its being very etive i think given the way in which hes approaching politics i think is probably not ideal for the party. Okay, i want to look at some numbers you pointed out from a new poll this week which say about 7 in 10 republicans think trump should be the leader of the party. But, philip, you say theres a Flip Side to the those numbers so explain that. Obviously that means about a third of republicans are not excited about him be the leader of the party. But only half of republicans think he should be their candidate in 2024. So im not sure what that looks like if hes not the leader of the party but also not nominee in 2024. Right now were seeing folks like Ron Desantis the governor of florida who are obviously positioning themselves for 2024 but not yet willing to take on Donald Trump. At some point either Donald Trump is going to be the Partys Nominee or someone is going to have to take him on. Its hard to imagine when thats going to happen. I was going to ask you when do you think that decision has to be made by Donald Trump as to whether or not he proclaims his candidacy . I mean im sure that comes up in your discussions with your colleagues. Yeah, i mean the its sort of open ended. I would not be surprised if he announced earlier than most people. Usually people wait until after the midterm Elections. They do that because they dont want to absorb all the attention. Absorbing attention has never been a concern of Donald Trump. He cant necessarily use that huge pot of money he accrued after the Election saying he was going to fight fraud. I wouldnt be surprised to see later rather than earlier. Let me ask you about your latest piece quickly. It is called this is how embarrassing Trumps Fraud claims have gotten. Tell me about this latest chain of custody claim, the substantive Letter Trump wrote to Georgias Secretary of state on friday. Very quickly Donald Trump and his allies have been trying to conflate the idea there was rampant fraud with technical issues that happened which means they should throw out votes. This is a report from a Pro Trump local news site. Im not sure how local it is but its claiming ballots were picked up from a Drop Box and not necessarily immediately taken to the county but there may have been a gap of several hours or something along those lines and therefore all the ballots should be thrown out and all the Election in georgia should be thrown out. Even in his Letter Trump says you can decertify the Election or whatever you can do. Its over. And imaginary fraud is not going to lead to some imaginary overturning of the Election. 319 days to be exact. All right, my friend, good to see you. Thats going to do it for me.
