Police are prepared for the worst. Fencing has been reinstalled and officers are on high alert. But this is not another insurrection. Lets be clear. It is not even really a protest. It is just a sad political Temper Tantrum by folks who dont understand how democracy works. Listen, i dont want to downplay the potential threat here because right wing extremists that are drown to these causes can certainly be violence as we saw in january. But what is happening today doesnt have the same Threat Level as what happened on January 6. One, congress is not in session. Two, a president ial Election Isnt be certified. And this time Law Enforcement certainly does appear to be prepared. What i want to do throughout our show is make a bigger point about extremism. And that as dangerous as folks in the streets can be, it is the ones in the halls of power that you have to watch out for. Let me tell you who the extremists that caused the most damage and lasting danger, and that is your gop elected officials. Voting rights are being rolled back as many in the gop continue to lie about a stolen election. Republican states are rushing to copy texas near total Abortion Ban because quote unquote all Lives Matter but clearly that only refers to a fetus because republican officials ban the Mask Mandates while the coronavirus is becoming more deadly, the children they claim to care so much about. All white School Boards are banning books that teecht truth about this country and racism. And folks in texas and five other Red States can now carry guns sans a license, Background Check or even training. And congress has allowed lifesaving economic benefits to expire leaving millions at risk of homelessness, hunger and worse. So when we talk about homegrown extremism, dont forget it is not the marchers that do the most violence. It is the policies. Lets talk about it, joining me now is Rosa Brooks, author of tangled up in blue. And Texas State Representative Jasmine Crockett and also Brittany Cunningham Founder of Love And Bowyer works and also an Msnbc Contributor. And ill kick off the conversation with you, brit. Listen, these couple hundred people, well see if it even gets to be a couple hundred people, but you want to square off against lawmaker, that is a losing battle. I dont fear them. The people i fear are in the halls of congress and in State Legislatures all around the country eroding our democracy. What is your take . My take is that you are right. This is not about the numbers. Whether 2,000 or 200 show up, what we need to be paying attention to is the violence that is exacted and enacted on us every single day. You know, Marjorie Taylor green in all of her horrific wisdom said Something Yesterday that i think we need to Pay Attention to. She got on a podcast with Steve Bannon and said she has been the most effective member of congress. And far be it for me to say, but i actually agree with her. Not because shes passed any laws and thank god for that, but because shes been incredibly successful at controlling the conversation just like the j 6 insurrections have done, like a number of People Trolling us as they carry around the banner of the gop party. But it helps us Pay Attention to and argue about extremist words and not policies. It makes us control an entire News Cycle and commit an entire News Cycle to a letter that madison wrote instead of paying attention to the bills that are being passed, the bills that you just ran through. And lets be clear though, State Bills are Test Cases for those bills to go all across the country. So the Abortion Bans, Voter Suppression, push back on Mask Mandates and vaccine mandates, that is a Test Case to figure out just how far we can push this country against the interests of the most marginalized and toward the interests of the most powerful. You summed it up briefly. Marry Taylor Greene is at the federal level. But in texas, this is dangerous. I want you to take a listen to your Lieutenant Governor there who pulled on himself. And well take about it. The revolution has begun. A silent revolution by the Democratic Party and Joe Biden to take over this country. You are talking about millions and millions and millions of new voters. And they will thank the democrats and biden for bringing them here. Who do you think they will vote for . So this is trying to take over our country without firing a shot. He is referencing the 12 plus thousand migrants in texas which is a stranlgtragic story. But this is also the diversity for them. Absolutely. You know, what is so frustrating, this man is the second most powerful person in the state of texas. And this is what he is about. When we talk about this legislation, what most people dont know is that this has been our Lieutenant Governors agenda, the antitrans legislation that he continues to push against trans children, that comes from him. He is the one telling the governor we want that back on for yet another session. In addition to the Voter Suppression bill. That bill went to the senate. They had every opportunity to actually send to the Governors Desk during the first session. But you know what happened . He is the one that slipped in the polls, the one that slipped in the ability to overturn elections and that gave us the ability to walk on the bill. He is pushing so much dangerous legislation. Youre right, people shouldnt fear these clowns. We know what to do with them. They should be fearful of those that are in office and i promise you the average texan really hasnt paid attention to who our Lieutenant Governor was. He is the same man who blamed covid on black folks in the state of texas and also the Seam Man who said that our grand parents, they would sacrifice themselves in the midst of covid for the purpose of saving our economy. This is who we have leading this, imalong with governor abbott, they are leading texas to the bottom and sadly enough florida wants to follow. Arizona wants to follow. Missouri wants to follow. So many of these crazy states are trying to follow our lead and were not leading this country in the right direction. That is the thing. We focus on Voting Rights but it is also the policy that comes after that, when you deny us our right to democracy, the policies that are instituted after that are the most dangerous and these clowns out here only bring that smoke when they are not outnumbered and that is why they are able to flourish in the capitol, why they are not going to different parts of the Nations Capital. Rosa, policing is such a big part of policy. So even as we talk about, you know, these angry marchers having this rally, it is interesting to me how we view police in this country and their reaction. So, you know in, 2017, the fbi had, you know, the black identity extremists on their lists. And it prompted the important question about who we see as dangerous and how Law Enforcement is certainly ready. One of the things that is striking, there were several officers, i believe six, who were are being disciplined who were on Capitol Hill that day. They werent very specific about the charges against these officers, but i do find It Striking that a lot of Law Enforcement showed up that day. What is your take . You know, it is hard to know what the numbers look like. One thing that we do know is that far right extremist groups have made a deliberate effort in the last decade or so both to recruit from within Law Enforcement ranks and to persuade their members to try to become Law Enforcement themselves. So we know that that effort is there to try to subvert and politicize Law Enforcement and fill it with extremists. What we dont know are the numbers. We dont know if this is still a small problem, i hope to god it is, or a small problem. I do think that in washington, d. C. There is tremendous awareness among the city and federal police that we need to be very worried about these people who are willing to use force to destroy democracy. The policies that weve been talking about are absolutely dangerous in many ways you are right, more pernicious, but at the same time having a bunch of people willing to literally kill and literally knock down the halls of government is also frankly pretty scary. I want to stick with you, rosa, because what does it mean for our national security . We already have global threats. You know, but when the Terrorism Calls are coming from inside the house, how are we do handle this . Because you have these you cant stop, you know, one fool from causing a great amount of damage all across the country. How do you assess the threat that were faced with it seems like in perpetuity right now . Hope not in perpetuity, but i think if we had put onetenth of the energy we put into fixating terrorism overseas, foreign terrorism, islamic terrorism, if we had put onetenth of the energy that we put into trying to understand the motivations of foreign terrorists, trying to understand the ideological groups, the way in which those ideological spread, if we had put onetenth into that of trying to understand the rise of violent Extremism Right here in the united states coming from the white national far right, i think that wed be in a much better Position Today than we have been. The one thing that i do take some comfort this is that we finally have our domestic and he cans such as the fbi, Homeland Security, i think that they are now very focused on domestic terrorism and extremism. Be they are playing catchup. And brittany, im curious your opinion on this, because im trying to my hardest to ignore these people. I dont really care, i dont want to spend time talking about them, about should we ignore them . We have to cover them a little bit, but i want to focus on bigger parts of extremism. When these marches happen, how should we handle it . I think that you always have to be responsible to tell The Truth. And we also have to make sure that we are doing as you are doing, were expanding the conversation and spotlighting what is happening just beyond the surface. I think that it is important though to call out these conversations in the way that this violence perpetuates a narrative around the country because while the violence is happening, two other things are happening. One, the Overton Window keeps shifting. The folks would are enacting policy who politely racist and transphobic, we see them as reasonable. Guess what, Mitch Mcconnell is not reasonable. The folks who work for them is not reasonable. And we need to be clear about that. The other thing that is happening right now, we are being consistently gas lit. And that is not just about being lied to and we are, it is also being trying to make those of us committed to telling The Truth be cast as some kind of crazy outlandish liar ourselves. So when Amy Coney Barrett says that the court is neutral and we shouldnt worry about politicization, when they are taking the court in a hard right swing that is dangerous to the rest of us, thais gas lighting. And if we dont call that out, it makes it easier for them to keep doing it and makes it easier for them to pass harmful dangerous laws in our name. You summed that up beautifully. And i have to ask you, before we get out of this block, look, here we have over 30 Law Enforcement agencies protecting the united states capital. In texas you do not have that. Do you feel safe showing up to work in a state where you can have a gun without a License Or Training and where people are actively saying the quiet part out loud about how they feel about people who look like you and i. So i actually feel okay going into the capitol because while those extremists, i mean, they are not really on the outside, like you said, they are on the inside. And one interesting point that you brought up, one of the people that participated in the insurrection is a lawmaker in the Texas House with me. So let me be clear, these people are infiltrating every level of government. They are not just showing up out here, they are saying let me get on the School Boards that is why we have the ridiculous School Boards where they say no to masks and vaccine mandates. Critical race theory. So they realize that they dont get that much traction when they show up here a so they are now running for office and they are shaping policy. And that is what is so scary. Because they are wearing both hats. So for me, i dont know that it is the people on the outside that are scarier than the people actually sitting in the chamber with me. Absolutely. Like i said, this is not like January 6, this is not congress is not in session. However there are people who live and are in and around the neighborhood of the capitol. What is your Threat Assessment Today with just, you know, who those how many people, but really not a huge crowd of folks expected . One thing for sure, im glad to see that they have the fence around. And if January 6 had had the fence or outer perimeter, the demonstrator es couldnt have gotten to the capitol as fast as they did. So that i think that they are prepared more so than January 6. That is good to hear. Well see how much it actually happens. I dont want to downplay the threat. Because some are looking for violence. And i remember watching that video and i want to play a little bit of it, because fending defending on what time frame you came into that video, people had different opinions. But we see a woman smack your mask and you reacted in selfdefense and you had fallout from that including being suspended from your job without pay, having your life threatened. So today how are you feeling and what has happened since that day . That day definitely took a toll on my life. I never expected it to happen. Since then ive been trying to collect and get my life together. Trying to move forward from that situation because i did get a lot of negative feedback. So i just want to move forward. Ive changed Career Paths and i want to do something that im passionate about. So im no longer in the security field. And im just trying to move forward. Hopefully i dont get a lot of backlash from people coming down today because like you said, i was threatened and they were told to make my life bad or do harm to me whenever they come down for these types of events. So i just want everybody to be safe and hopefully it is peaceful because ive witnessed a lot of the protests and events that go down and have been down there and that was the only one that i really seen this was violence. And unfortunately, i was in the incident. What we see on the video is immediately after, you are being man handled and we can see people saying things but we cant hear. What were some of the things that happened in the immediate aftermath on the floor that day . Just a lot of racial slurs and me getting attacked and assaulted, following me and trying to close in on me. They were trying to take my mask off, they were trying to take my phone out of my hand, trying to go in my pockets. And again, a lot of just racial slurs and just assaulting me. I was being hit, pushed, tripped, and the police officer, the situation that you all are seeing are actually the second encounter. I had an encounter with that crowd and those group of people before. And it kind of as you can see, i was walking back after the police pulled me to the barricade and they had circled in and closed me in and started to harass me. Someone spit on me, i was getting punched and everything. And that is really offending to see, mr. Jones. Watching that, she certainly had every right to defend herself. One thing that i found most striking, but not necessarily surprising, is the number of Law Enforcement who were among the insurrectionists that day and the expectation was that the Capitol Police would be on their side. Why do you think they expected that . Number one is the demonstration was for former president 45. And so me, they gave them the privilege. And the goahead to come up here. It is a lot of good officers as well as bad officers. But for them to think the Capitol Police was going to go along with it was to me more behind the scenes than we have been told. And police unions continue to support the republican Party And Donald trump even as we see this play out that as my Colleague Joy Reid said, they wont depend the police but they talk about defund the police as a democratic slogan. Why do you think there is so much support for a president of twice impeached president who clearly does not support Law Enforcement . Because were not doing anything about it. We the people are not doing anything, we are not demanding to find out what happened on January 6. You got members of congress should be held responsibility for jab 6. We have the exPresident Trump should be held responsible for January 6. Until we do that, we will never have an answer of what happened to our democracy on January 6. And i think that that is very important that we find out exactly what happened and who was involved. Because the Police Officers are only going to do their job. They protected congress that day. They protected republicans as well as democrats. And yet helps didnt stand behind them when they needed to have an independent counsel to investigate what happened on January 6. Absolutely. And you know, well see what happens today. I anticipate that it wont be well attended. You can kind of already tell it is kind of a thin day, but we have a few hours to see. So thank you so much mr. And in fact the real victims are the Hundreds Of Trump supporters who tried to overturn the election. But whenever the sheep get off that Fox News Diet of lies, the reality is that the Capitol Riot was a violent display of White Supremacy that has thus far resulted in five deaths, 643 railroads, 59 guilty pleas, 1. 5 million in damages. Donald trumps second impeachment and an ongoing congressional investigation. Joining me now to get into it is congressman joaquin castro, a democrat from texas, and a former house impeachment manager. Congressman castro, always happy to have you on the show. Thanks so much for being here. The one thing that i find really interesting about Todays Rally is that they have the temerity to do it when congress is not everyone open. But you have two congressional candidates speaking today. You could be serving alongside even more supporters of the insurrectionists. How does that make you feel . Well, it is absolutely shameful first of all. And also really an a abomination that you would have two people running to be part of congress that would stand there with folks who i know we call it an insurrection, but really it was also an attempted coup. They were trying to stop the u. S. Congress from accepting Joe Biden as the next president of the united states. And so for people to hitch their wagon to that politically, really speaks to where the republican party is today. And indeed. And really quite frankly where the republican party has been for a long time. I want you to listen to one of your colleagues in the upper chamber, senator cindy hydesmith. She made a remark and well talk about it on the other side. Take a listen. She is saying if someone invited her to a Public Lynching that she would attend. This was her poor attempt at humor. She did later offer some apology that fell short quite frankly. But why do you think because the republican party would be the first to say this we welcome all people, you know, they are brilliant at spitting in our face and trying to convince us it is rain. Why do they feel so at home in the republican party and this is not post trump, this has always been the case with the republican party. Why do you think that is . Youre right. Over the years, i think the republican party really started to appeal to white resentment of any kind of minority progress, of Civil Rights for example, of votes rights. And it evolved over the years to become more and more naked in its appeal until you get to Donald Trump who was not very, you know, nuanced at all. And Donald Trump i think brought peoples worst instincts out to where now people werent just saying it privately to each other, but were going public and embracing it more, that kind of racism and resentment. And right now Donald Trump and that sentiment owned the republican party. I want to get into the commission a bit. You are not on the commission but you were a former impeachment manager. So the Commission Members are now requesting records from federal agencies and some of the telecom companies. Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy companies if they cooperate with the commission. One, can he ethically and legally even do that to these companies . Because that certainly sounds like extremism to me. And, two, what might they find, what is he scared that these records might reveal . Because certainly his Phone Records would be a part of that sweeping search. It is extremism for the person who could one day become speaker of the House Of Representatives in the united States Congress to threat these companies if they follow the law. Legally i dont think that he has any foot to stand on. In terms of what they might find, we have to see what the evidence produce, but i think that it is quite responsible that there were several republicans who were this contact perhaps constant contact with Donald Trump as this insurrection or attempted coup ways going on. Jim jordan for example has already said that he communicated with Donald Trump a few times that day. And i specific that there are several others and they dont want the american people to know that, the extent of their involvement. And according to reporting, Ken Mccarthy talked to Donald Trump that day and said who the F Word do you think you are talking to when he was asking them to call him up. The Committee Hasnt released the names of the folks that they are looking at, but dozens include trumps wife melania, his children, ivanka, Chief Of Staff mark counsel. So if it is found out that these folks misled congress, if they participated in anyway in this insurrection, what are the consequences . The commission is doing the investigation but then who picks up and says this is now what the punishment looks like. First, i give a lot of credit to Bennie Thompson and the committee for not holding back and asking for information from everybody who may have had a role or who may have known something about the events that transpired that day. I dont think that just because you are a member of congress if you did something wrong, you should be treated like every other american citizen would. And so if in fact the evidence shows that they were in cahoots with the folks who stormed the capitol on January 6, then they should be prosecuted just like all these other folks, 600 something other people have been investigated by the fbi and the Justice Department. We certainly will keep our eye on this. And i know that you had a birthday this week, so happy belated birthday. I dont know if you are aware, but former Hud Secretary Julio castro also celebrated a birthday this week. So happy birthday to you both. When you hear people say that Donald Trump turned the republican Party Racist and they brandished themselves the reagan republicans, i find that insulting. He was not friend of hours. Yeah, it is amazing. When you think about even reagan before he became president and when he was governor of california where he referred to a black family which was being harassed for having bought a home in a predominantly white community, and reagan referred to them as trouble makers. And his contempt for issues of several rights was wellknown prior to this. So really quite frankly, you cant simply exclude the rest of the party. You know, this was part and parcel the direction the party began moving in going back to goldwater in 1964. So this is a tradition. And i want you to take a listen to Lee Atwater saying the quiet part out loud almost 40 years ago. Take a listen. You say [ bleep ]. And then you say that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like Forced Busing and states rights. And you are talking about cutting taxes and all these which i thinks are economic things. And a byproduct, blacks get hurt worse than whites. That was the theme of the prp party. And bush 41 picked it up with his drug policies that created a pipeline to lead thousands really of black folks into prison. So really this has been going on a long time. Your thoughts. Yeah, he mean, it is the competition for the white racist vote. Going back to 1948, there was a question of where the south would go and specifically wanting to appeal to racist whites southerners in terms of voting. So we talk about the southern strategy with nixon, but this really precedes him by 20 years. A display of that extremism is under way in the Nations Capitol where far right protesters are headed to Union Square just steps away from the Capitol Building for a socalled rally in support of the rioters arrested and charged for their crimes on January 6th. Its set to kick off at the top of next hour. Joining me is nbc News Correspondent Garrett haake, working on a saturday, who is on ground at the rally in dc. It looks pretty empty. It does not appear to be populated. I know its about an hour away from it getting under way. Set the scene for us. Is anything happening down there yet . Reporter right now the actual attendees at this Rally Wouldnt fill a school bus. Now, im at the Back End of where this rally is going to be. You can see the stage beyond me. Basically everyone you see between me and the stage are part of the media that are covering it. They just turned on the Trump Rally Play list. Were about an hour away from the start of the event. What this has been up until now has been a story about Security Preparations and you see some of that behind me on 3rd street southwest. This is the enormous Security Infrastructure that has been put in place here by the Capitol Police, by d. C. Police. These are d. C. Public works trucks here. Weve also got Law Enforcement from virginia, from maryland, federal national guard, d. C. National guard on standby a few miles away at the armory. The story right now is of a department really of two Police Departments leaving nothing to chance in the wake of January 6th, and a rally that doesnt appear to have met even the 700 Person Cap that it was permitted for. I think were probably well know 100 attendees here so far in the leadup. And quite frankly, living in the Nations Capitol you can kind of tell when these marches are going to be populated and it has not appeared to be populated at all. I dont anticipate a lot of action today, but just the ridiculous idea that theyre protesting in support of the insurrectionists, whats your take on this State Of Affairs in these divided States Today . I think its laughable. I think its one of those things where you have to continue to laugh to keep from being enraged about it. To be a negro and consciously aware in america is to be angry all the time. Its quite comical. Looking at some of the coverage of what its supposed to be and the purpose of it, it is maddening to think that these folks are attempting to come out or saying theyre going to come out to support an injustice, how all these people from the riot were put in prison for this and it was a wrongdoing on the governments part. Its coming from people who pick and choose what parts of the constitution they want to be faithful to, but are standing behind this brash display of irreverence for our country and what it stands for. So im just laughing about it over here, to hear people say on the one end were going to gather for this protest. Of course you see people being afraid to go, dont go because the government is going to pre provoke you to be violent. No, youre just scared to get arrested this time. Its a lot of excuses. I agree. Youre also creating beautiful content and putting it in context. Youre back, we have your audio. Give us your thoughts. My guess is that first and foremost its going to be like a badly attended country concert. Theres not going to be a lot of people there. People understood that theres real risk that this the great Orange Savior is not going to save them and people will be much more cautious. On a structural level, i thought they contextualized this very well. Im not afraid of these fools down here. These folks, they have no structural power. Theyre simply Hood Ornaments on the vehicle of White Supremacy. Thats all they are. Theyre Crash Test dummies. Im worried about the folks in state legislators, and White Supremacists that are in Law Enforcement and that are in academies that are teaching this hateful ideology. These folks are not really doing no harm, theyre not touching any of us. Lastly, i just want to say this right here, i dont see this as an extremist act. I see this as permitted, that theyre abiding by all the rules and laws and this is about as calm and docile and harmless as you can get. I believe in the right to protest. I see the states that are trying to pass antiprotest legislation in light of the George Floyd protests, and i think thats dangerous. We want to protect their right to say what they want to say and worry about those folks that are deep in the machinations. We support peoples right to protest, however last time they protested they were dangerous and did cause problems. Thats certainly not the landscape today. I hear you. Speaking of people who are White Supremacists, i want to talk about Bob Woodwards book, in his book peril, they revealed that former Vice President Dan Quayle had to talk Vice President Mike Pence into certifying the 2020 election and this was despite enormous pressure from trump to find any way possible to stop it. The revelation shows just how close the 2020 election came to being completely derailed, brittany. You know, its interesting because, fine, this book with Bob Woodward and bob costa, you see people get to reinvent themselves and write books and theyre granted contracts with networks and were supposed to forget that you sat by this president and now you want to cash out and write your books. I never viewed Mike Pence as a hero. What do we make of this revelation to call a man who Cant Spell Potato . If thats the guy you have to call, youre in trouble. What youre saying is absolutely correct. There is a whole bunch of rewriting of history right now. We see it around January 6th and around folks who aided and a Betted Trump Inside and outside of the white house. We see it among the gop generally. We see it among a lot of people who spent their entire careers and built their power on the backs of black, brown and indigenous people. On the backs of poor people, marginalized people. Theyve created grave atrocities who are now being seen as the saviors of the gop, as if the party of reagan is actually the party that has some kind of moral center that needs to be returned to. And, frankly, far too many of the people offering these people compliments and the spaces to actually recast themselves are democrats. They are people who are supposed to be on the right side of history who are giving other folks a chance and i believe in making the biggest choir we can. I believe in the politics of addition. However, we have to make sure folks understand that if youre going to come and do the right thing now, that doesnt mean that youre unaccountable for the things that you did in the past because we have to have an assurance youre going to operate functionally better than you were before. So im not complimenting Mike Pence or george w. Bush or Dan Quayle for doing the things they should have always been doing in the first place. Ill bring them compliments and softball interviews. In another show of extremism, nicki minaj, lets talk about it. She became a Temporary Darling of Fox News and the antivax crowd this week after they talked about her Cousins Friend and the covid vaccine. Her story got so outlandish, her home Countrys Minister of health put out an official statement debunking it. We all have those people in our family who, you know, theyre hesitant, they have concerns, they have questions. Obviously this spoke to me because she unfortunately went after someone very near and dear to our heart, joy reed, who was simply trying to express and counter her narrative in fact. But what does it say . Because she has a lot of followers and a lot of influence. And when you read her tweet, it was so im curious, what was your take . What was your take on the whole thing . I was taken aback for sure. Nicki minaj has a lot going on. Shes definitely a vibrant character. But youre right, with such a large platform she has to be very careful. I dont hold it against black people, especially, to be skeptical of medical procedures going on by the states, because of just our history with it, the syphilis experiment. Thats all we have to say about that. But we do have to actually do the research if we say thats what we want to do. We cant just come with hearsay that information will probably pass through, okay, in a Group Chat like beginning the story with my Cousins Friend is already unreliable information because youre not getting it from the source. And then to talk about information that is very, very very in line with what an std might look like. One might think these two separate events can happen at the same time and may not be related and i think thats where a lot of people are going wrong with how they are viewing the virus and looking at potential Side Effects. Theyre taking instances of people that are experiencing other Health Side effects of other health issues theyre having going on concurrent with them having the virus, when studies are showing the actual research is out there is giving the information that none of this is true. And i think her response she is vulnerable to public criticism. I hate that the antivaxxers have scooped her up because its an example of using black bodies for our own benefit. People are going to come at her for anything she has to say and so that defensiveness that comes along with being a public figure is kind of like an easy out, but she just has to be more reined in. Its unfortunate the way she and joy clashed heads, but i think people are confusing bullying with callouts than callins, or just urging to use common sense. Searching for these stories in the dark corners of the internet and think your Cousins Friend is the one thats going to catch something that all the scientists in the world, doctors missed, speaks a lot to ones intellectual capacity. But i invite her on any time she wants to come on and talk about the research she did and maybe save black lives. Speaking of activists, i want to talk about the cbs Game Show, which has faced blistering criticism. Global citizen and live nation say the original format of the show distracted from the vital work of activists. When i saw this, the thing that stood out to me is how many people had to sign off on this and say i green light this. It just says clearly not a lot of folks who look like us on the screen. What was your thought when you heard they were turning activism into a Game Show . That was to you. Sorry. You know, were talking about latter Stage Capitalism where nothing is sacred and not saying that activism is sacred, but weve seen a commercialization of pretty much every single Niche Market of american life, and so of course this is going to be something that is going to be exploited at some point or another. Im thankful that there was a backlash. I think that it should create honest conversation instead of sort of a selfrighteous pat on the back that we accomplished this. But the direction that capitalism is going, that we are in fact exploiting every single thing thats possible under the sun, and that this is completely fair game, unfortunately, for a u. S. Market. In addition to all we said the republicans were looking for, theyre looking for the last four digits of peoples Social Security numbers. What is the danger in having all of our personal information in the hands of partisan republican election deniers, essentially . Listen, thats absolutely right, tiffany. I wouldnt trust these jokers with my netflix password, let alone the last four of my Social Security, Drivers License number and also the way in which folks decided to cast a ballot. And what i thought was very telling about what Chris Dutch just said and chris used to serve with me in the statehouse. Hes one of the people pushing the Election Integrity Committee that i and others were allowed to block that was going to allow them to investigate the election as it was ongoing. So we know that he is somebody who has embraced this radical idea of Election Fraud from the very beginning, even before votes were cast. And so were in this circular situation where they have made these allegations and now they want to spend hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania Tax dollars investigating the lies that they told. And we see what happens when folks tell lies. On January 6th people werent just armed with weapons, they were armed with lies. Now theyre doing a reunion in the capitol this weekend, continuing to foster a sense of grievance when what happened is democracy. I have been ringing the alarm about this for months and months and months and i think every single person in the country should be laser focused on what is happening in pennsylvania right now. Because, yes, we were the state that decided who the next president was going to be and certainly, as you mentioned, im running for the u. S. Senate because pennsylvania is going to decide whether or not Mitch Mcconnell becomes Senate Majority Leader again. And i think a lot of people want to have somebody who is going to stand up for the fundamental right to vote and then to viet for a government that actually fights for Working Families and marginalized people all across the commonwealth. There are other things happening in pennsylvania as well and thats book banning. In york, pennsylvania, the allwhite School Board voted to ban books teaching about the true construction of this country, banning a book on rose parks. What is the resistance happening . I know democrats are planning to file a suit later this week to try to stop this election shamble, but when youre Bleeding Democracy by A Thousand cuts, how do you stop the ongoing republican onslaught of these efforts . Tiffany, im in York County right now and was just meeting with so many women from across York County, talking about the issues that theyre facing and what theyre worried about. What theyre worried about is not trying to get Sesame Street and pbs and books about Rosa Parks out of the schools. That is nonsense. What they want is to see our schools be fully funded and not have pennsylvania be 46th in terms of educational equity. What they want is to have republicans and unelected radical judges not trying to block their right to make their own Health Decisions and block abortion access. What they want is to see us focusing on spending the 7. 5 billion that pennsylvania still has in Rainy Day funds to deal with the floods that we saw all across the commonwealth and to deal with the crises of stagnant wages and communities where People Cant Stay in their homes and do all the things they need to care for their families. That is what these women and people all across the commonwealth are asking for, worried about. Instead, you have people trying to get Big Bird from in front of kids. And so theyre supporting the Big Lie, theyre against Big Bird, and theyre full of crap. What we have to do is keep focusing on pennsylvanians care about and thats why i think weve seen so many people get engaged in this campaign and to say we need to do the right thing, which is get rid of the filibuster and actually pass the build back better agenda, the John Lewis Voting Rights act and all the things that make life better for people. Now, the dark corners of the internet play a role in extremism and thats both in planning their rallies and riots and in radicalizing people in the first place. Joining me now is an investigative reporter and senior Internet Policy Research fellow at Harvard University and the Executive Director of one peoples project. April, i want to start with you because this is something you studied. I met you while you were covering this issue. You know, the convergence between White Supremacy and the republican party has always existed, however its been exacerbated with online traffic. Why is that exactly . Well, you know, people are finding communities online to kind of confirm the beliefs that they have, and those beliefs online tend to go more and more extreme, the more people build communities online. So lets say some meme circulates around that gets people to laugh at something racist. Other people thumbs up it and then a community starts to form. Before that might not have been the basis of the community, it might have been because they were republicans or had conservative ideals. We see things start to radicalize online and weve seen a convergence around things like Racism Or Hate at the local and national level. If its an online threat, these are individuals. So there are the umbrella of groups like the Oath Keepers and the proud boys, but how do you stop an individual from being radicalized . Teenagers are susceptible and 20 somethings. Theyre lonely and addicted to their cell phones. How do you bring that kind of dangerous activist to a Screeching Halt . Its hard to say. The platforms have not been that good at it because we see these communities continue to converge, continue to grow, continue to rally support of their bases on mainstream Social Media platforms. Facebook, with moving to closed groups, facebook has pushed people into small groups that have exacerbated this issue. But we do know that when Social Media platforms take action to remove groups that perpetuate and organize around hate, it really does destabilize them. For instance, weve seen the Platform Dis Cord removed, neonazi and that makes it harder for them to communicate. When we see facebook groups, then they have to organize and regroup. We saw that from President Trump when the microphone was taken away from him from twitter, facebook, he was no longer given a platform to encourage people to organize around these things. Really it falls on the backs of these Social Media companies who have to police their platforms and say are we going to provide a platform, are we going to provide a Microphone And Broadcast power to these groups or are we going to nip it in the bud . Honestly, ive noticed a change in the discourse since that microphone has been taken away from Donald Trump, quite frankly. For some reason, darrell, you show up at these rallies, and engage with some of these folks. Why do you do that and what is it youre hoping to learn and what have you learned . Its like lotto, youve got to be in it to win it. I think you have to be there. You have to see it for yourself sometimes. Its more than just that. Youve got to know who you are dealing with and sometimes the things that you are looking for are not going to be found on the internet. Thats probably why you are going to see a lot of people here, but in november theyre going to have a conference down 45 minutes just outside nashville where theyre going to have people who were at the insurrection speaking, as well as some folks coming from overseas with neonazi ties speaking and networking and trying to figure out how they can just spread their message or spread their evil, for the most part, around. Why are you there . Im there to make sure that we are on our game. There are things, like i said before, youre not going to see on the internet. We have a lot of footage from January 6th that comes from them. All they had to do was delete it and we had to go looking for it. If we are there, we can have our own footage and put it out there ourselves and they cant do anything about it. What does that accomplish and are you ever fearful for your own safety . You have to be concerned for that. You do have to be concerned for your safety. And what it accomplishes, it means that you have the sources, you have things that they didnt want you to have. You have information such as who they are when they dont want you to know who they are. What you see at the rallies basically is a roadmap. You see them here and who else is hanging with them beyond the rallies is what youre looking for. Law enforcement, that should be their role. Do you feel the need to play the role of Law Enforcement here . And if so, why . Law enforcement let them go home. If it was us doing that on January 6th, they would have wrapped us up in Orange Netting and said we were under arrest. You cant trust Law Enforcement 100 . You have to put their feet to the fire. Thats why we got the arrests in charlottesville and January 6th. We have to defend ourselves. April, i want to bring you back into this because tiktok is a huge challenge here in society because as younger folks leave their parents Social Media platforms, theyre trafficking in some of this online hate as well. The department of Homeland Security has alerted, they show concerns, tiktok is already under scrutiny for sending peoples data to china. Why tiktok and can tiktok be stopped . I mean, its not just about tiktok. Its always going to be the next Social Media platform. So right now its tiktok, but when these people get booted off tiktok for breaking the rules or too many News Reports like this, theyre going to move to the next one and the next one. And, you know, that way theyre innovation opportunists. They want to break the rules and push the envelope again. And they become savvy. Maybe theres one or two people encouraging violence or maybe a few people saying that, but most of these people are actually known to keep it very, very above board when the messages can be read by outsiders, when they can be read by people like the media. And so they know who is reading them and so what we really need to look out for is not just threats to violence on these platforms, but how theyre using them in an above Board Game to to taking out books from hospitals and protests outside hospitals in los angeles. And were seeing these folks actually doing cohesive grassroots movement organizing. So, yes, its happening on tiktok but its going to be the next platform and the next one. Thats a good point. I could think of No One better to remind folks that these people do not have the loudest microphone and the resistance is happening. I want to start with the doj suing texas over this Abortion Law. Where does that stand . Its a very good lawsuit. They have great legal arguments as to why the Texas Law should be overturned by the court. Unfortunately, as were talking about extremists, they dont just wear robes of white. Sometimes the extremists wear robes of black, and unfortunately we still have a Supreme Court and lower courts who are just overwhelmed with extremist republicans willing to ignore the law to advance their bias, sexist, bigoted agenda. One of the things we dont have happening today at this poorly attended rally, you dont have the Supreme Court Justices Wife busing in other terrorists to participate. That didnt happen today. That did happen on January 6th. So we have to understand that the extremism is not just kind of boots on the ground, theyre also in the very highest places in the land. Since you brought up that certain persons wife, i think we should play a Sound Bite from him. Justice Clarence Thomas made a rare appearance. Lets take a look at what he had to say and well talk about it on the other side. I think the media makes it sound as though you are just always going right to your personal preference. So if they think youre Antiabortion Or Something personally, they think that thats the way you always will come out. They think youre for this or for that, they think you become like a politician. And i think thats a problem. I think youre going to jeopardize any faith in the legal institutions. This comment from him comes on the heels of Justice Amy Comey barrett, who sits on the Supreme Court, claiming that the Court Isnt partisan. These are comments she made with Mitch Mcconnell. Its laughable that theyre presenting the court this way, because certainly their own biases have impacted the rulings that come out of the Supreme Court. But they have lifetime appointments. What can be done about it . The thing these people are trying to do is give legitimacy to the extremists that we see in our streets. Its working hand in glove, right . Like the people out on the streets are trying to overturn a pluralistic democracy and the Supreme Court is saying, yes, thats also legal and it has nothing to do with my personal opinions, i just happen to like apartheid. The only thing for democrats to go after them, to expand the court and do the other things we need to do to secure democracy. But i want to be positive. This is also where america is very lucky, the extremists that we have in our country, luckily for us, are cowards. These people are cowards. Sure, theyre willing to go out and kill somebody for what they believe, but they aint willing to die for it. No, because that takes courage. They dont want to die for nothing. Instead, as soon as they get got, they run home crying to their mommies and asking for their vegan meal and getting a plea deal. If Law Enforcement would just stop these people, if some of those who didnt also burn crosses, if Law Enforcement would put the wood to these people, they would melt and crumble and we see that today. You make a good point that its profitable, extremism. Fox news makes Money Off of extremism. Were Running Out Of Time and i really want to get your perspective on this new Voting Rights compromise. Some people are viewing it as a good thing. I love the filibuster Joe Manchin has come up with a Voting Rights compromise. You write beautifully about it in the nation. Whats your take . The filibuster still wont pass the filibuster, does he for it or does he want to look to be for it . As a Voting Rights law, it is good. You can argue its better than the for the people act because it actually counteracts some of the republican legislators attempts to take away votes. The other thing it does is takes away all of the ethical strictures of the for the people act. Do you want to see trumps taxes . This Bill Wont let you do it. Do you think its wrong for the government to spend money at a business owned by the president or Vice President or president s family . Well, this Bill Wont do it. To get Joe Manchins support for democracy, democrats had to appease his support for corruption. So its not the best possible bill. It would be better than nothing, i suppose. But, again, Joe Manchin wont even write the filibuster to do it. These extremists on the ground are a problem. But the bigger problem are their enablers in government and the courts. Absolutely. I have been blessed with a long life and have seen the best and the worst of this country. I think about the horror inflicted upon black people in this country every day. 107 years old and still alive and kicking. All Morning Weve been talking about the dangers of american extremism. Mother fletcher, Viola Fletcher lived it. She was 7 years old when she survived the tulsa massacre, one of the deadliest incident of racial terror. She and other survivors and descendants are heading to court demanding reparations for damage done 100 years ago. And theyre asking the federal government to open an investigation so that justice at long last may be done. Joining me now is the attorney for the tulsa survivors and descendants and hes been pursuing justice for this case for a long time. So happy to have you here. Youre going into court now, this month, on september 28th. Tell us whats at stake in this court hearing. Whats at stake, its the first time ever in the 100 years to try to get just. For 100 years the perpetrators of the massacre, the city, the chamber and others have acted with impunity for this attempted genocide of black people in Tulsa And Theyve been protected by the Oklahoma Court System this entire time. No case has been able to move forward. And on september 28th, we have our very first ever, in 100 years, hearing on this issue and its a motion to dismiss. So basically theyre trying to kick us out of court, dont give these 107 or 106yearold people an opportunity to prove their case. What were saying is, judge, give us the opportunity. And we feel like the law is clear, the facts are clear that they should have an opportunity to go and prove the damage that was done and what, more importantly, it takes to fix what we call abate the damage and fix this and continue on. Just to remind people, there are three descendants who are still alive. Survivors. Forgive me, who are still alive from the tulsa massacre. Mother fletcher, you have mother randall. 106. And you have uncle ray. 100. 100 years old who survived this incredible massacre. I think we all want to know, how are they doing . Theyre doing fantastic. Mother randall will be 107 on november 10th. Shes amazing. Mother Fletcher And Uncle ray, mr. Ellis, are brother and sister. They just returned back from africa, where they went over for one week and spent time. When i first met mother fletcher, one of her dreams, she told me, was to travel to africa. And so im so excited through the efforts of so many people, so many supporters like yourself, we made that dream come true. What all three of these survivors want more than anything is justice, not just for themselves and their family, but for the black people that were dispersed throughout this country, if not the world, who have been impacted by the massacre and its 100 years of continued harm. Thats what this lawsuit is about, and what i work at the justice for greenwood foundation, its all about fixing the problem that was created by those who destroyed black Wall Street and to this day continued oppression and discrimination. When you told me they were going to ghana, i was so worried about it. And the message he gave you you was tell her, i survived White Supremacy, i know i can survive a trip to ghana. How do you feel about your chances . This hearing is a pretty big deal. I find it baffling when the evidence is there, that the judge could find for her to dismiss this case would be to dismiss the testimony of these survivors that are over 100 years old. I feel very good about our court case. The law is clear that we have the opportunity to prove whats called a public nuisance. Obviously, we know the facts of the massacre. I really feel good. We have a fantastic team, lawyers from new york and l. A. And oklahoma and texas, all over the place, have come together. We have a community of folks. But more importantly, we have found the same law that the state of oklahoma utilized to win a 550 Abatement Verdict against opioid companies. Were utilizing that same law in the same manner. We simply say if it can be used by the state of oklahoma to help opioid issues, it certainly can be used by our survivors to finally get a day in court. Thats what were asking for, give us a day in court. We know we will prove our case and finally get the abatement of the necessary changes to make up for the massacre. This judge is elected in tulsa and the eyes of the world are going to be on this case on september 28th, because it really will be precedent setting. Absolutely. To at least honor these people with the respect, they have certainly earned their day in court.
