With the people being persecuted so unfairly, adding quote, in addition to everything else, it has proven conclusively that we are a twotiered system of justice. Whatever that means. And in the end, however, just till will justice will prevail. On that last point, he might be right. Justice may well prevail in these cases. Seven of the January Defendants are being sentenced. Yesterday a California Woman was sentenced to probation but not before she told the court the insurrection was a quote unique experience and she had never been to a similar event. Oh, due say. A shocking confession came days after the fourth person affiliated with the far right group the oathkeepers pleaded guilty relating to January 6th. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and other charges. So lets go live now, to the Nations Capitol and this rally in support of the insurrectionists, Allison Barber is at the rally and lets start with you. What is the situation right now . What is it like right now . What are you expecting throughout the day . Yes, let me just kind of walk to show you a little bit of what things are like here, the biggest difference between now and January 6th are physical barricades, remember, on January 6th, there were some bicycle racks, typically one layer and fairly sporadic and now multiple layers here. When you look up toward the capitol, you can see some officer, Capitol Police, gathered, meeting, arriving onsite now and you can see the bigger taller barricades that were constructed after January 6th. Those came down in july. Theyre temporarily Back Up in preparation for todays events. Those are connected there. Theyre very sturdy, very hard to push over, when youre up near them, you can typically see these big flat kind of basins if you will which makes it very difficult for someone to turn those over if they were to try. All of this very different than what we saw on January 6th. When you look across the street, you can see more physical structures set up to separate the area where protesters are expected to start gathering, at noon, in the united states capitol, we dont know exactly what today will bring, that we know that Capitol Police want to be prepared because they were not prepared on January 6th. The Capitol Police say they have made a lot of changes after January 6th. And that they will be in effect today, a change that the Capitol Police say theyve made, as they say the last time around, prior to January 6th, they were gaining intelligence from outside agencies and they were consumers and now she say they are producing it. Obviously we know it took quite a while to get the National Guard down, over three hours for the pentagon to approve that request on January 6th. As you say, now they have National Guard members standing by. The organizer of this event, hes been adamant that he says he and his organization do not support any sort of violence. But according to the capitol Police Chief, they have seen Chatter Online that is reminiscent, similar to what they saw leading up to January 6th. They say determining how credible that is can be a bit tricky and right now their biggest concern in terms of violence is what could occur possibly between protesters and counterprotesters, the permit is for 700 people, but for now, it seems like that might not be at all kind of what shows up. But one thing i think worth mentioning and remembering, after some other attempts postJanuary 6th, for far right protesters, rioters, to gather, a lot of their efforts have been disrupted online by activists on the left, kind of causing Confusion And Chaos and Reall Sowing Distrust in those groups. Thanks ellison. There is chatter about possible violence today. The fencing is Back Up around the capitol. What are you hearing from Capitol Police but lawmakers on Capitol Hill on how prepared they are for today . I believe a lot of them left town early yesterday. Yes, good morning. Thats exactly right. The big difference here, when i walked in this morning, there are no lawmakers in this building. Theres no election to certify. Theres no business to be done congressionally so this building is essentially empty aside from myself and a few journalists and Camera Crews and of course the show of force police around this building. But you touched on a very important point. What are they saying . Democrats of course are still blaming former president trump, including his statements this week, in which he both supported the defendants from January 6th, and at the same time said that this rally is sort of a setup, out to get him. Lawmakers on the right however, republicans, are not saying much, theyre keeping this rally at an Arms Length that is set to begin in a few hours because they dont want to deal with the political fallout that came after January 6th. They would rather focus on president biden, what is going on at afghanistan at the southern border, rising inflation, all topics that rile the democratic party but back to this building right now, as ellison was showing you before, there are no sitting lawmakers today, we have two republican candidates vying for seats, one facing the ten house republicans who voted to impeach the former president earlier this year. Other than that, this building was empty. I was texting with one of those Police Officers, Front And Center on January 6th, harry dunn, who told me they are all going to be here. It will be an incredible show of force. The Capitol Police tweeted moments ago, saying team work, they want to show publicly what a big display of force this will be. Capitol Police Chief, as you said, only stepped into this role two months ago. And trying to fix the pr surrounding January 6th, and show theyre ready for anything. At what point do you and your colleagues in the democratic party, America Cant continue with a two Party System if one party is playing Foot Sy with insurrectionists and activists . It is my wish that the republican party would reclaim itself but right now it has devolved into a cult. Just spewing lies. Spewing misinformation. And disinformation. The biden administration said yesterday that the August 29th Drone Strike did not kill any members of isisk but instead did kill ten innocent civilians including seven children, the head of central command, called it a mistake. But no mention of any accountability. Can congress provide any . And isnt it time congress reasserted its authority over the power to make Power And Launch drones and kill unarmed people in far away countries . I think this Drone Strike is tragic, a Drone Strike that killed ten civilian, search seven children is sadly a requirement that congress Take A Look and make sure we do our oversight responsibility. I Cant State enough the tragedy of seven children being struck and killed by an armed Drone Strike. What do i think is yes, we do need oversight. Number two, at least i am relieved that this administration transparently admitted this mistake. We have to be accountable. And even in the fog of war. Would he have to be accountable for what we do. I worry a lot about the language we use around war, the euphemisms and we have to Take A Look at our Drone Program with over the horizon capabilities, we see over the horizon was not capability, it was tragic, terrible. Joining me now, Chief Correspondent for Pbs News Hour and msnbc contributor, a fellow at Georgetowns Institute of politics and public service, i want to start with afghanistan, and continue on from where i was just talking to the congresswoman, this Drone Strike, ten civilians, seven kids dead, quote a mistake, according to the general in charge, but no mention of anyone being held accountable. Can we in the media hold them to account . Because i feel like we dont have Drone Strikes killing civilians all over the place for two decades but this is the first one getting actual coverage, actual outrage. Youre absolutely right about that. And one of the things we should remember about this particular admission from the senior most military officials which is extraordinary by the way, that kind of admission, it is also extraordinary just how wrong they got it. But it comes on the heals of the media investigation. It was the New York Times that dug into the Media Evidence that conducted a number of interviews on the ground with family and so on, and really conducted the original investigation that called into question the militarys original narrative around that. And as it turns out, almost everything the military said in the initial hours and the days following that strike turned out to be wrong. They said that they believe this to be an isis associate, and they believe that he had explosives in the car, and they believe that he was targeting Hamid Karzai International Airport and you have to remember this is on the heels, three days after the extraordinary attack that was carried out by isis at the airport and ended up killing 175 people, including 13 service members, so everyone, right up to president biden, promised that they would be held accountable, whoever carried that out and do everything they can to protect future loss of life. This strike came on the heels of that attack. In this case, the u. S. Got it horribly wrong and ended up killing a man who was in fact, working for a u. S. Funded agency on the ground and seven children, and it calls into question the reliance on whatever the intelligence is on the ground, the future strikes, which the u. S. Says is is going to be carried out in the future. Yes, killing a proamerican afghan on your way out the door of afghanistan while his kids and nephews and nieces all run out to see him, as he returns from work. Absolutely horrific. I have to ask you, you did one of the rare Media Offices of former president on pbs, did you get a sense he would flee at the first sign of trouble . And do you buy the biden Administrations Argument that afghanistan turned into a mess last month because he fled, and the Afghan Army collapsed and not because of any decisions taken by the biden administration . I will tell you, in that interview, i got absolutely the opposite impression, because that is what he told me, three months prior to the fall of kabul and said in no uncertain terms, i will not leave. I was asking him, under pressure at the time, because they would not deal with him, they saw him as a puppet of the west and basically said if were going to move forward with any kind of negotiations or peace talks about a future government, it cant include him. And he was adamant he had to be a part of those. He had to be a part of the future government. In other words elections have to be held. And if he wasnt going to leave, and he went as far to say i will die here in my country before i leave. That as we know turned out not to be true. When the taliban were knocking on the gates of kabul, he did end up leaving and remember, this is a man who survived several Assassination Attempts at the hands of taliban in years prior so it is much a matter of Life And Death for him. No indication of that. And certainly as we saw from the immediate hours and days afterwards, caught the u. S. By surprise and thats why you have, and i can cite here the extraordinary reporting that my colleague jay ferguson, he was on the ground hours after the president left, there was basically a Power Vacuum that was left and No One was sure who was in charge, a city that had no leadership at the moment and the only people there to provide that kind of security for the city were the taliban. And so that is how he ended up, where we ended up today, but chaotic is a word we have used so much over the last few weeks, it is the most accurate word, it has been nothing but chaos. Would he have a democratic governor, who has tried her best since the march of 2020, to be ahead of the virus, to be on top of keeping people safe and secure, and at every turn along the way, the republican legislators and the republican Attorney General who is now, he declared himself as her opponent in the reelect, have been on the other side. We are watching this Battle Play out up close and personal. We have had Public Health officials resign because they feel that they cannot carry out their jobs and duties. We have people harassed. Mask mandates have been overruled by the governor. So theyre in place in some School Districts and not in others. We have hospitals filling up. So we are living day to day, in this situation where there is a real battle over Public Health rules, and the federal government is using all of their tools, which i appreciate gately to say large employers, must put in place mandates, Vaccine Mandates or testing protocol, must have all federal employees vaccinated, all Contract Employees vaccinated, not only reaching broadly to the jurisdiction that can touch directly, but trying to set an example of how we get out of covid crisis. So thats the federal Government Versus Kind of State Governments. At the federal level alone, theres other things the president could be doing, right . So i dont get why we dont have a federal Vaccine Mandate on planes for do. Travel as we do for masks. There is a federal mandate for masks but not vaccine. Dr. Fauci says he is pro. If you were still at hhs, would you be pushing for that . I would be pushing for it at hhs and im certainly pushing for it as somebody who needs to get on airplanes periodically, i appreciate the fact that airlines dont want to be out at the front of that line, by themselves, so i think a travel mandate, we have it in place, we had it in place earlier with shutdowns and when you take public transportation, but certainly transportation is a privilege, it is not a guarantee. So i think to say, if youre going to get on an airplane, if youre going to get on a train, if you ride public transportation, you need to show a vaccine card, because we do not want to continue this virus ricochets around the population. I have four grandchildren that are under the age of nine. And they are a priority in this country, to be safe and secure, they cannot be vaccinated, we know they can be sick, we know they can carry the virus, and for the adults in this country to be so irresponsible, that they will not take steps to protect the millions of children who currently cannot be vaccinated, is really just outrageous. And i think we need to use all the tools that we have in the toolbox, to get this virus under control. Delta is ravaging again our economy and our country. We have way too many kids who are now back in and out of school, because their outbreaks in schools, we have in kansas, again, some Mask Mandates in place. Some are not, in the smaller more rural areas, with limited hospital beds, limited emergency staff, they are the least vaccinated in the state. So we, its a catch22. And im glad you mentioned kids because that is a preventible tragedy, a tragedy nevertheless. We have to leave it there. And in the wake of george floyds murder, conservative parents in Town Launch a backlash, Raising Hundreds of thousands of dollars and a lawsuit that is successful in putting the plan on an indefinite hold. And while all of that is going on this past spring, this past school year, a student in the district who we are calling m, because of potential for retaliation we are concealing the students identity. And she ends up being brought into a Chat Room on instagram by a group of students in the district who begin to mock the student for their Gender Identity, call them a series of explett he was and criticize political beliefs and for support for Joe Biden and kamala harris. We have a an excerpt we want to show you today because it shows not just the experience of the student but their conversations with Principle Shawn Duhan in the district and how the school decides to handle the harassment on a day to day basis. And this is where enforcement of the Student Code of conduct comes in. Because under the code students can be disciplined for off campus behavior, including cyberbullying. And the document says students harassing classmates based on Sexuality Or Gender can be suspended for first offense. Its like oh just tell us if it happens again.
