Ellison, you were there for January 6th, i was following your reporting as things were getting scary. From your Vantage Point you didnt know everything that was happening. How are things looking there with less than five hours to go . Reporter it is quiet. It is fencing, fencing, fences, as far as the eye can see. There were bicycle racks January 6th. The heavyduty came after the insurrection took place. Closer to the capitol an area to the left that was breached by insurrectionists on January 6th, they have that more intense Heavyduty Fencing that we saw come up after January 6th. This is obviously a big change compared to back then. We do not know what today will bring. The organizer of this event has been adamant in saying he doesnt want to see any sort of Violence But Capitol police officials are trying to be prepared for anything, because they were not prepared on January 6th. Theres more barricades, trucks lined up along the street that will separate where the protesters are expected to gather from the united States Capitol. U. S. Capitol police activated everyone on their team. Anyone who can work is coming in. D. C. Increase their presence around the united States Capitol and the National Guard is on standby. Some of the biggest changes according to Capitol Police are taking place behind January 6th, they were relying on outside agencies to give them information. Now they are producing it and they have the National Guard ready to go on standby, on January 6th, it took over three hours to get approval to have some assistance, some backup from the National Guard. Thats changed this time around. In addition to the fencing that is temporarily up, all of the fencing after January 6th came down in july. This is temporary and will come down shortly after if all goes well. Theyve installed new cameras and they have three militarystyle portable cameras moving around so theyre covered in areas where they dont have physical bodies as well. It was actually really encouraging to know that the hard work that so many nasa and Spacex Folks have done over the past several years has come to fruition enabling this new capability for Nasa Astronauts to go to space and also for this private mission, our work went into this as well and its really interesting that they flew in Crew Dragon Resilience the same spacecraft i piloted to the international Space Station and they went on a different mission profile, up higher in the 580kilometer Range since theyre just orbiting in the capsule but im sure it gives them a great view and really amazing to see it. I love watching their interviews and seeing the updates from spacex and from the crew just amazing to see what theyre going through and that theyre enjoying this experience and sharing it to the Max Extent possible. Their orbit was about 360 miles above us, roughly the distance between Los Angeles and san francisco. The iss is considerably lower and thats where you were for some six months. Absolutely. Take me through what Theyll Experience around early evening hours in the tiny capsule 13 feet wide around. Whats going to happen as they return to eighth. What do they experience, what do they hear and see . Great question. I can simplify it by saying its the opposite of what they experience during launch. Theyll feel some of the same forces as they enter the atmosphere and the spacecraft will conduct a series of burns to decrease Speed And Altitude and start to interface with the atmosphere and that will slow them down. They will experience an increase in g and actually it is interesting to experience that g after experiencing weightlessness. It really stands out and they will start to slow down and we peaked out over 4 gs your face was pulling back toward your seat and your chest felt heavy and you had to concentrate on breathing and we noticed as the g got really high thats also when the atmospheric heating was going on. Could you see orange and pink outside the win dose. I asked the commander, mike if we could turn the lights in the cabin. You see it go dark where maximum heating occurs. The seats will move into the Landing Position and then they will prepare for the chutes to come out and the main chutes will come out and prepare for splashdown and theyll touch down instead of the Gulf Of Mexico, in the Atlantic Ocean for the first time with crew and it was a really nice touchdown so i wish them calm seas and great weather out there like we had. How are you feeling, now that its here and are you staying as far away as you can . You know, so Congress Isnt in session so im back in illinois. I think were all hopeful this will not be as Big A deal as it was before because people are prepared, because the president of the united states is not actively egging people on and encouraging, but at the same time were all i think were all at some level deeply angry that its partisan to defend our democracy because until we get past that, its real hard to work through the causes and make sure that everybody heals. I mean, just like you said, this has been, this issue has become politicized. Are you surprised that we havent heard a ton from your republican colleagues and do we have a responsibility to speak up against this . Look, its too late for today but the republican party has completely lost their soul. Think about the fact that who to you feels like a leader in the republican party right now . People like representative gonzalez, who i consider a friend, who im sorry to see leave because he cant be there anymore, Congresswoman Cheney who i disagree on almost everybody, got kicked out for leadership. Kinzinger in illinois is being called out. Who would actually follow Paul Gosar and lauren bobert, the answer is kevin mccarthy. You have complete absence of leadership in the party, who is so afraid of alienating their base that theyre basically coddling to them instead of doing the bare minimum of this job, which is to say i took an oath to defend the constitution. Whats right is right. There are things that are morally unambiguous and i am going to lead you, not follow, im going to lead you, and i cannot name anyone in the republican Party Today who has actually been willing to do that. At the heart of this issue is what you and your colleagues went through that day, and your Colleague Congressman Dan kilde said several lawmakers are suffering from ptsd as a result of January 6th. Do you have a until or mental effects since that day . I think the truth is all of us do. We were, i want to say it was january 7th, although i suppose events of January 6th didnt end until the 7th, after wed gotten a nights sleep. Congressman ruiz together and said all of you have ptsd, you dont know it yet. Thats how your body processes the sentence. Youll be quick to anger and you need to tell your family and Loved Ones thats the case and all of us were, and you know, and in my own case, i was convinced that my own anger was righteous because i was pretty angry the capitol got attacked and pretty angry that it was partisan to talk about that. I thought i was processing it pretty well until Ed Perlmutter called me up, youre always a happy guy and theres a set in your jaw for two weeks. You need to talk about it and work through it. Thats from me, who was in hindsight, i was never in direct threat. I was locked in the Capitol Complex and in hindsight, its 20 20, but i could hear the ambient noise outside, i didnt know where the crowds were going to be. I was getting, had the sense of panic and powerlessness, interspersed by periods of huge boredom, trying to call and text people, what could i do and my experiences go double for people who were actually in the gallery that day. They go triple particularly for the female Members Of Congress because its a lot easier in the current world we live in for a white man to express anger in an acceptable way, and it goes quadruply for the staff, because when the Capitol Police came through to protect us, they got all the Members Of Congress out first but the people who were barricaded behind those doors were staff and some cases nonpartisan staff. Those Staff Members are definitely heroes and even though you say hindsight, that fear that you felt was real and congressman, we appreciate you coming on and being so forth right with what you and your colleagues were dealing with. Many administrators have wanted to put mandates in place but they cant because of Governor Greg abbotts ban on them. One School Board thought they found a way around. It the paris independent School District in Northeast Texas tried using a loophole by putting the Mask Rules in a new Dress Code and the texas Attorney General filed a lawsuit for violating the States Ban on mandates and the courts sided with Paxton Prohibiting the Paris Isd from enforcing the Dress Code. Well, theres always some parents who dislike every Dress Code. And there are many who are very favorable to it. And we have been very successful in implementing it and the adherence is terrific so far. So it is Nothing Anyone wants, but so far, the numbers in our School District, in paris, have been among the lowest in the state, for absences due to covid. So we believe its been very successful so far. A federal judge in florida has left Governor Desantiss statewide ban on masks intact. Do you believe there will be more rulings on that . And there will be a Court Decision on putting the order in place. Does that Outcome Concern you . It really doesnt. First of all, our Attorney General last year argued in front of the Texas Supreme Court that he has no authority to actually have standing to go into court to try to enforce these executive orders. And so what he did in this case was, on friday, he filed a lawsuit that he had no standing on, and then got a quick order signed by the judge before he even told the School District that he had filed the lawsuit, or that there was going to be a hearing. So he snuck in to court, and even though he didnt have standing, and that will be one of the things that will be discussed next week. You know, you mentioned that the Mask Adherence has been really great among your student population, you Guys Havent had a ton of cases, you know, when did that Restraining Order go into place and how long have you guys essentially been maskless as students want to be . We received the notice on monday evening, and so tuesday morning, the superintendent told the staff that we will not enforce it, but we will continue to encourage it. And weve been very pleased with the number of students who have continued to wear masks. As well as faculty. Well, dennis, please keep us updated on everything that has happened.
