Rise in most states. An advisory panel overwhelmingly advises against Booster Shots for most americans, but experts say its a matter of time before we all get the third jab. I think we should expect at some point the boosters are going to happen. So the Question Today is not really a booster, yes or no, but, rather, is now the right time for a booster . A stunning revelation as the u. S. Military admits it killed ten civilians including seven children in kabul when its drone hit the wrong target. I offer my profound condolences to the family and friends of those who were killed. This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake. And theres a new twist in an already twisted case. The fiance of the woman who went missing during their Crosscountry Road Trip has now disappeared himself. Her family says shes in hiding just days after police named him A Person Of Interest. Good morning, everybody. Its saturday, september 18th. Im lindsey reiser. And im Kendis Gibson in marek island, florida. Were awaiting the return of inspiration4, that allcivilian crew, that made their way to space, making history. Overnight we learned when they are splashing down. We also heard from them for the very first time and we also heard whats their favorite food in space. Its not goldfish, lindsey. Thats just weird. I like what i like. I imagine the culinary choices are pretty limited. Were looking forward to a visit from victor glover, Somebody Youve interviewed before. Well talk to you soon, kendis, thank you. Were going to begin at the u. S. Capitol where the Law Enforcement is on high alert ahead of a rally in support of people facing charges after the January 6th insurrection. This is a live look at the capitol. Before we get into this, its really important to put into perspective whats happening today. Todays event was organized by one man, and the Permit Application for the event was for a Crowd Of 700 people. Now, we dont know whats going to happen today, how many people are going to show up. Neither do Capitol Police, but they obviously want to be prepared for every possibility after what happened on January 6th. With that, lets get to capitol hill. Nbc News Correspondent Garrett haake. What did you hear . Reporter yeah. I mean, lindsey, i was in the briefing yesterday, and i was here at the capitol on January 6th, and i have to tell you, i have not seen a Security Posture like what were seeing this morning since the immediate aftermath of that day. Not only has the fence around the capitol building itself gone back up, which has been weedily reported, but even overnight, additional Security Preparations have been added here. There are trucks blocking intersections. There are additional antivehicle barriers set up. It has been thoroughly biked off. Its tough to show in the dark, but its surrounded by police vehicles. Ive had multiple Capitol Police officers drive by just to make sure were where were supposed to be and far enough back from the Fence Line where they want us. As for the briefing yesterday, i asked Chief Manger what theyre seeing that makes them as concerned or makes them think this kind of Security Posture is necessary. Heres what he told me. I think we would be foolish not to take seriously the intelligence that we have at our disposal. How credible it is, how likely it is, people can make those judgments, but the fact of the matter is we are hearing some chatter that i think would be responsible for us to plan the way weve been planning and put the precautions in place. Reporter lindsey, some of the context around that, our own team that covers extremism, theyve been monitoring these same online forums that the police monitor, and on those forums, theyve seen some of the far right groups who contributed to January 6th are telling their members not to come, its a honey pot situation, designed to get them arrested and in trouble with the police. I can tell you i tweeted one of my stories about the preparations this week and had someone from those groups retweet, patriots, stay away interest this. Theres quite a lot of discussion about what Todays Rally will be. I can tell you this for certain. It will be heavily policed. Garrett, what about counterprotests and that the Action Wont be where you are because of all the Police Security and may trickling out into the streets of d. C. Reporter thats a concern for Capitol Police and d. C. Police who are responsible for everything else in the district off this property. Weve seen that in other protests, not just January 6th but some of the smaller protests that often take place in the district of columbia where youve got a permited protest. I cant tell you how many times ive seen it in any group, no matter how large, no matter how overwhelmingly peaceful any given group might be, there tends to be a couple of people who want to mix it up with the other side, and they try to find themselves somewhere in the district. Yesterday both the Capitol Police chief and the d. C. Police chief said that was one of their primary concerns and one of the things that d. C. Police will be working hard to try to prevent. Garrett, what about politicians . What have they been saying about this rally today, and are any of them going to be there . Reporter well, this is another big differentiator what We Saw on January 6th and what we might see today. I think we need to separate these two events into two different things, types of scales. In the leadup to January 6th, you had the stop the steal with the president speaking, a number of large prominent elected officials. At this event there are no current elected officials set to speak. There will be two congressional candidates, one of them running a campaign against one of the members who voted to impeach donald trump, another for a Voting Seat in georgia. No one speaking. Kevin mccarthy did a soft waveoff this week when asked about this event. He didnt expect any of his members would be speaking. Theres been some reporting. I cant confirm it. He had been forceful with some members, not to come. Public hi he said he didnt think any of his members would be speaking. Thats my understanding of whats going to happen today based on my conversations. Garrett, we know youll be spending the it better part of your day there. Well turn to you throughout our two hours. Thank you so much, garrett. Welcome, everybody. The Crew Dragon resilience. Were cruising right now at 580 kilometers above the earth going about 7. 6 kilometers per second, so were really booking. Were seeing the world every 90 minutes. Thats how fast were traveling around it. Its pretty incredible. What a sight. Thats the allcivilian crew on their historymaking journey. Theyre heading home after three days of orbiting the earth. They will splash down off the coast of florida at 7 06 p. M. Eastern. Theyve been taking breathtaking photos, conducted Medical Research onboard, and they made that special call you heard to the children at st. Judes hospital. Isaacman, the billionaire, is raising funds for childrens cancer. Kendis is live in florida. What a fun post to see, the civilians upsidedown and weightless. What did we learn from them up there . Weve learned very little, but apparently its going great. Theyre healthy. We have not been able to get that smile off their face, so theyre very, very happy. If youre up in space some 360 miles above earth, wouldnt you be happy as well. Unfortunately their trip has come to an end. Theyll be splashing down around 7 06 eastern time off the coast in the atlantic ocean. We saw the ship thats going to pick them up, pull on out into the ocean a little bit earlier. They gave us A Tour of their life in zero gravity and talked about what theyve been doing and what theyve eating. Their favorite food for one of the pilots there is pizza. She says the pizza is pretty bomb in space. Theyve also been doing chats with kids from st. Judes childrens hospital. Heres how thats been going. What kind of Sleeping Bag do you have . Hey, miss ava. Thank you for that question. If youve ever been camping, we pretty much have those same kind of Sleeping Bags. Can you fall asleep because theres no gravity . Were going so fast its traveling around the world. Whats your favorite Space Food . Pizza. Are there cows on the moon . I hope there will be one day. Weve always wondered that. Are there cows on the moon. We will get there some day. The question is how many cows are on mars. Thats the other question they didnt ask. While theyre all smiles, lindsey, Space Travel is a dangerous thing. Theyre not the first civilian to attempt to go to space. Christa mcauliffe tried in 1986. Coming up well speak with two of Christa Mcauliffes former students and what they thought as they watched this Rocket Rise from Cape Canaveral wednesday. What do the local billionaires say about this . It is different in the sense that theyre trying to raise up to 200 Million for st. Judes childrens hospital. Of course, one of the persons onboard, the medical officer, hayley arceneaux, was a patient, Cancer Survivor at st. Judes and wanted to give back to the charity. The others just benefitted, the billionaires. While its part of the billionaires space race, its doing some good. Its making us realize, yeah, we can go to space some day. We just have to hitch a ride on one of those billionaire rockets. Kendis, youve got connections. Get me a seat. Ill Call Someone who can call somebody. Make a call. Your people can call my people. All right, kendis, looking forward to your reporting throughout the course of the show. Coming up, not enough evidence. Thats what advisers are saying. What is with all of this confusion and whats next . The former Health Secretary is here to break it all down. And the new story gripping the entire country. Police cannot find gabby petitos fiancee. Well tell you what authorities are likely doing to track down their Person Of Interest. Their person of Interest Icy hot. Ice works fast. Heat makes it last. An Fda Advisory Committee voted unanimously yesterday in favor of Pfizers Booster shots, but only for americans 65 and older and those at high risk for severe covid. They overwhelmingly rejected boosters for people 16 years and up. The recommendation will go to the full Fda And Cdc for approval. The decision comes at a critical point in the pandemic. One in 500 americans have died from the virus and people continue to battle over mandates. Just a couple of days ago three people were arrested for asault here in New York after a waitress asked a group visiting from texas to show proof of vaccination before seating them. You can hear and see that scuffle and that Hotess Stand being moved around as well. Lets bring in donna shillelagh. She also teaches a fascinating class at the University Of Miami called the politics and economics of Health Care. Well get into that. Whats your reaction to that video and your feelings about the mandates . The video is horrifying and show some respect for those trying to do the right thing. Whats the right thing . Protecting peoples rights. I have no respect for those that would attack, whether its people that work on our airplanes or teachers or people in our community that are trying to do the right thing. We have to do the right thing and keep our Eye On the ball. Do you think the panel made the right call by only allowing Booster Shots for those 65 and older and those at high risk . Do you agree with the doctor at the beginning of the show that a booster is likely to happen for everyone, its just a matter of when . I think its a phasedin plan, but they need more data. I was a secretary of hhs for eight years. Theyre consummate professionals. The panel stuck to the evidence that they have. But look at what they did. Almost half of the people who have gotten vaccines will be eligible for this Booster Shot if they got the pfizer vaccine. We dont know about moderna yet, but its coming down the road. Yes, they made the right decision, but the decision is not final. We still have the Fda Leadership to make a decision as well as the cdc panel. The important thing is they stuck to the science. Im very proud of them. They stuck to their guns. They stuck to the science. They gave us the best advice. Look. Twothirds of the people are already in the united states where youve got 62 Million people on medicare who are over 65 or at risk. That is, they have some kind of disability. Add to that teachers and first responders who are also eligible for the Booster Shot. And youre talking about almost almost 100 Million people. Were talking about a lot of people who are going to be eligible right away. I see it as a phasein. I think they do too. They need more and more data. We want them to stick to the data. When do you think we might see a recommendation for the rest of the population, and do you think that some of this mixed messaging, even though youre saying theyre following the science and theyre supposed to do what theyre supposed to do, do you think its rubbing americans the wrong way or it will confuse people . The problem is we havent properly educated people and the fact that the science is going to change. Were going to get more and more information. And weve got to be nimble enough to absorb that information to give People Clarity about what they should do. So i think that americans are beginning to learn that theyre going to get more and more information, but i dont think people are going to be confused. Look. With the two shots or the johnson johnson shot, youve got lots of protection. When i mean Eye On the ball, we have to go back to those not vaccinate and do what we can to get a Lavender Group vaccinated. Its almost a side show. Its important but not as important as the number of people were getting vaccinated. I want to talk about that. You do teach a course on the politics of Health Care. Just those words together, you know, it just kind of really hits you. This Week Weve seen Attorneys General from 24 states about the vaccine mandate. Your expertise about this subject matter, is this an example of politics getting in the way . It certainly is, and the politicalization of this Covid Pandemic is just awful because people are dying because of it. I dont know what the endgame is for these republican governors. It makes no sense to me on why they would want their own base, which theyre speaking to, get sick and possibly die. I dont understand my own Governors Endgame on why he would put the population of florida at risk. It makes no sense to me at all. Donna shalala, were so grateful for you spending part of your early morning saturday with us. Thanks for your time. Thanks for having me. When we come back, were going to continue our special coverage of the splashdown of the spacex flight, and heres kendis with a look. Hey, kendis. Hey, lindsey. As you know, Space Travel comes with a level of danger. We found that out very much so when Christa Mcauliffe was going to be the first civilian in space. Now we have four civilians up in space. What must it have been like for Christa Mcauliffes students to have witnessed this . Coming up i speak with two of christas former students. Th Tw Christas former students. Age is just a number. Of course, you recall back in 1986 some 35 years ago when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded seconds after lifting off, killing seven people onboard. One of them was Christa Mcauliffe, a teacher from new hampshire, who was trying to be the first civilian in space. We have four civilians in space now. Christa mcauliffe was trying. While she never made it, she had quite a huge impact on so many generations of people who have been inspired by her work and what she was doing as a teacher. Im joined by two of them, former students. Kristin and holy. Holly. Thank you for being here. Thank you. Good morning. Kristin, let me start with you. You were both High School Students of Christa Mcauliffe alt the time. You watched at her rocket listed off in horror, no doubt. As youre watching the Inspiration4 Liftoff at nearby Cape Canaveral, what were you thinking . The Anxiety Level of what comes up of what could possibly go wrong is real every time you see a liftoff. Its impressive that they get to follow their dream. She would want that to happen. But it doesnt come without a level of anxiety watching. And, holly, does that level of anxiety transcend to any mission or specifically when you see this mission and you know that there are four civilians onboard, something that your former teacher was trying to do . I think so. I think, you know, any time i hear, you know, earlier this summer when the other flights went up, too, they were you worried. In this one, i thought to myself, i hope this country will be okay. Were already in a lot of chaos if something happens to this liftoff, you know. But im very excited for them at the same time. I think its wonderful that we can continue with this. I was very excited when i heard that Christa Mcauliffes backup important Barbara Morgan got to go many years later through nasa. And so im still excited to see civilians going into space. There is a level of anxiety. You do wonder. You do wonder, you know. You hope its going to be okay. Yeah. You can only hope that it can be okay. But thats not a reason to stop going, i guess. Kristin, back to you. You know, you mentioned that if Christa Mcauliffe would want this to happen, would she be proud to see what took place here wednesday and whats happening right now . I think she would be very proud. She was definitely an individual who believed that you follow your dreams. You dont let barriers get in your way. I think she would be exceptionally pleased that her goal, that it didnt end the way she wanted or we all wanted, did not create a barrier for the future. That indeed. Holly, in the meantime, it did not create a barrier for people in the future who want to explore space or to be a teacher. She really inspired a whole bunch of you. There are lots of us from our class, i think, who are teachers, yeah, yeah, we did. A lot of us became teachers. We all want to teach the way she taught. She wanted to teach that ultimate lesson from space, and i think its wonderful that these people got to go up. We all got to be a part of it and watch it again. It looks like theyve had an exciting time over the last couple of days. So Id Love to see a Teacher Go Up and teach lessons. We have an astronaut from maine whos up there now. And then she teaches a lot from the space station, which is really amazing. Yeah. Those folks have been smiling from ear to ear. Kristin jacques and holly merrow, thank you so much. Im curious whether youll watch. Kristin, will you watch when they splash down . . Absolutely watch it, yes. I will, too, yes. With a little butterflies, im sure. We all will be watching. Thank you, guys. Really appreciate it. Lindsey, it gets to be tough for so many people, you know, especially those folks who were there . The classroom, lindsey, who watched the challenger explode in front of their eyes, to watch many of these missions so many years later. Its got to be so nerveracking. Absolutely. Great interview, kendis. Thank you. Coming up, tragic mistake. Thats how The Pentagon is framing its erroneous Drone Strike in afghanistan that left ten civilians left. The potential fallout next. Two and a half weeks after a Drone Strike in kabul, The Pentagon is admitting they hit the wrong target. Rather than killing an isis facilitator, the strike tragically killed ten civilians including seven children. General mckenzie is apologizing for the loss of life. Mike, what are they saying went wrong . Reporter well, lindsey, just days after this Drone Strike, general mark milley, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is calling it a righteous strike. Hes now calling it a tragic strike. The New York times put it this morning, just about everything that senior Defense Officials were saying in the hours, days, and weeks after the strike turned out to be false. What happened here was a failure of intelligence, plain and simple. The u. S. Was tracking a white Toyota Corolla that they believe was an isis operative, potentially leading to another attack. This was, again, days after the Suicide Bombing that killed 13 service members and hundreds of Afghaghan Civilians at the airp. It turns out white corollas are very common. This strike was taken in an earnest belief it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and evacuees at the airport. But it was a mistake, and i off my sincere apology. As a combatant commander, im fully responsible for this strike and this tragic outcome. Reporter Defense Secretary Lloyd austin announced he was conducting his own investigation including evaluation of the orders that went into this strike. We heard from General Mckenzie as Well Yesterday who said there would potentially made to the families in compensation for this, but when he was pressed about this, he has acknowledged that the fact that the u. S. Has no presence on the ground in afghanistan makes identifying the family and getting payments to them quite difficult. And heres the difficulty. Now that the u. S. Has no Military Presence on the ground in kabul, theyve been talking about what has been called the Overhorizon Ability to target terrorists within the country. Thats the same kind of aerial activity thats led to this mistake, and there are a lot of questions about whether that capability is effective giving the situation, lindsey. Mike, thank you. Thats the fare of Gabby Petitoing the young woman who went missing after taking a Crosscountry Trip with her fiance. The investigation is now taking some unexpected turns. The police are now searching for Brian Laundrie after family says hes been missing since tuesday. Gabbys family says hes in hiding. Hes A Person Of Interest but not wanted for a crime. A Tick Tock User said they picked up laundrie on August 29 when he was hitchhiking alone. He returned to florida alone and has refused to speak to authorities. Joining us now is former fbi profiler jim clemente. What do you make of brian Laundries Disappearance and the fact that hes yet to make himself available to police . Certainly the fact that hes not cooperating with the investigation doesnt bode well for his participation or his appearance or the condition. Theres no information shes been seen in quite a bit of time right now. Was this any kind of failure for the Law Enforcement to loose track of the main Person Of Interest . How does that kind of thing happen . I dont think he was named as A Person Of Interest until after he was missing, but, its something that they should have at least kept an Eye On. This is the person that was with her. Last known sightings were them together. And they let him go. But, again, this was a crossjurisdictional issue. This was two jurisdictions, one in florida. Florida has taken over the case. They have the custody of the van as well as, i think the fbi also processed it with them for evidentiary purposes. I believe it will not be very difficult to locate him. As an individual, i dont think he would be that sophisticated in being able to stay off the grid. I do think theyll be able to locate him. The question is whether or not hell cooperate at this point or whether or not theyll charge him. How important is this tiktok Users Story to potentially finding gabby . If its actually ververifiab that would be very important because it puts them at a particular place at a particular time and it shows they were not together at this time, so theyd have to backtrack from that point and find out when they were actually last together and where that was. Hopefully theyll be able to get her phone records. If her phone was active during that time, youll be able to track where it had been during those critical days. Weve been playing some of the Body Cam Footage of police responding to essentially a Domestic Incident on August 12 before she was visibly missing. You see gabby distraught in this video. Yeah. What does this tell you as an investigator. It seems to me the first responding officer had the right idea. He separated gabby from brian, made sure she was okay, realized she was in distress. But then the second officer that came only talked to brian and made a determination that brian was actually the victim at that point. I dont think he knows anything about coercive control and how brian was blaming her. She was blaming herself. But that could be because he constantly gets on her about her behavior. She describes herself as having ocd and that it bothers him. Thats a pretty good indication that instead of helping her, he was actually creating a problem. He never asked her why she fought him or why she him. They came up one question whether she intended to hurt him or not and that was it. They never really got her full story. Interesting. We want to turn also to new developments involving the prominent Murdaugh Family in california. Alex murdaugh hired a hitman to kill him to his son could collect an insurance payout. Investigators are opening another probe into not only the death of their housekeeper in 2018 but murdaughs deceased son connected to a fatal 2019 boating crash as well. What do you make of this case . This case is really all over the place. The only thing thats very clear is that alex murdaugh, hes been lying, and he also seems to be trying to blame the issues thats having right now on the death of his wife and son, when apparently this addiction thats had, has been going on for decades. I think he made some really bad decisions many years ago and that may be what is falling out now and why there seem to be so many deaths surrounding this man. In knoxville, hospitalizations are 45 times higher than they were at the start of july and officials estimate that 96 of Adult Hospital Beds are occupied. In eastern tennessee, only six icu beds were available and 88 of icu patients were on a ventilator, this comes as tennessee is among the states with the highest rate of new covid cases. Joining us In Knoxville, Tennessee W the latest is liz mclaughlin. Reporter it just goes to show the states with the lowest Vaccination Rates are reporting really grim numbers. Here in tennessee the recent steep surge is putting a strain on hospitals. Were In Knoxville in the eastern part of Tennessee Where its been hitting especially hard. Were at the university of tennessee medical center, the only Academic Medical Center in this region, and were going to speak to a doctor here with an update in a few moments but a couple of days ago as you mentioned only six icu beds left in the entire east part of the region. Those icu numbers change constantly, but its a low number and its putting some stress on this system. Now part of when icu beds free up, some of that is because someone might die from covid19 and were seeing a majority of those deaths a steep increase in mortality are with unvaccinated patients and the vast majority, talking like 97 , sometimes more, thats a trend were seeing nationwide so there is a parallel here and this surge is some higher averages than weve seen since the winter surge, with a largely unvaccinated population over the last seven days, 7,500 cases on average each day here in this state, and theres no end in sight. So liz, you just talked about the low Vaccination Rates. What is the government there doing to encourage more people to take the vaccine . Reporter its mixed messages to say the least. Theres a lot of officials who are saying this is an effective prevention, even getting their vaccines on tv a few months ago, but you know, since that Executive Order from biden putting in some mandates to make sure Health Care workers, for instance, or federal workers will be vaccinated at a higher rate, the Attorney General here wrote a letter saying were not going to comply with this, we think thats an overstep from the federal government. Yet here in tennessee, one of the lowest Vaccination Rates in the whole country. Liz mclaughlin, thank you for that live report. We appreciate it. We begin a new hour of msnbc right now.
