Both houses of congress are in recess. Members for the most part are out of town. Another major development we are following tonight, a setback in White House plans to make Vaccine Boosters widely available as soon as monday. Today, an Fda Advisory committee voted against recommending a third dose of Pfizers Vaccine for most fully vaccinated adults among us. The panel did hold a second Followup Vote and agreed to recommend boosters for people over 65 and for those at high risk for contracting severe disease during the day long meeting. Members said they needed to know more about the impact of these third shots. Recommending a third goes to younger people is just not something that i would feel comfortable with at this. Point i think we should be concerned with immunity clearly seems to decrease overtime. Do we want to wait until more previously vaccinated people get sick . I want to support a recommendation for people over 65, i have a hard time supporting it for anyone who is younger than 65. The fda has the final word on approvals. That is expected by next week. The cdc will also set guidelines of its own on just to should get these boosters. All the, while some people have gone ahead and gotten their Booster Shots anyway if they are able to. Today, the government updated the number of americans apparently dying of covid. The latest Sevenday Average shows we are losing 1448 souls every day. That number is about 17 higher than the week before. This is the day the pentagon admitted that a drone Strike Launch just before american troops left afghanistan was indeed a tragic, deadly mistake that killed ten civilians, seven children among them. The Air Strike was launched just days after an isis Terrorist Attack killed 13 american service members and well over 100 afghans and was intended to target another potential isis bomber. This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces. We but it was a mistake. And i offer my sincere apology. As the combatant commander, i am fully responsible for the strike and its tragic outcome. As you, know the biden administration already facing intense criticism over its afghanistan withdrawal. This incident will also add to the scrutiny of join chiefs of staff, chairman general Mark Milley who has defended the Militarys Action at the time as a right to strike. Hes already being criticized for reports that he made calls to his chinese counterpart in the final months of Donald Trumps presidency to assure that the u. S. Had no plans to attack. Today, milley defended those calls, telling the Associated Press they were, quote, routine. And he said they were made to, reassure both allies and adversaries in this case in order to ensure strategic stipulatey. The president will have much more on his plate next week when the house comes back into session. We hes gonna have to get congress to pass bills while lawmakers try to strike a deal and keeping our country from defaulting on its debt and keeping our government open. That is the work that awaits them. With that, lets bring in our Starting Line on this Friday Night as we say goodbye to another week. Jonathan lemay, or white House Reporter for the Associated Press. Retired four Star Combat Veteran in vietnam. Former battlefield in the persian gulf. Former member of the national security council. And Doctor Nahid but delia, back with us as well. Infectious disease physician, founding director of Boston University center for emerging and defections diseases, policy, and research. Good Evening And Welcome back to the broadcast to all of. You doctor but delia, indeed, given the importance of Public Health tonight, i would like to start with you, what did you make of these dual fta Votes Today Colliding as they did with the policy and wishes of the biden White House with the president On Down . Yeah brian, the Question Front of the Committee Today was given the data on vaccine efficacy, could you recommend those who had pfizer a booster. And the committee rightly said, based on the evidence that has been given to us, we cannot make that assumption. Because there are strong data that says that in those who are older, and those who have medical conditions, there is oh waning of both protection against infection and severe disease. But in those who are under that age group, they are not seeing that. That is not yet documented. So you are seeing waning of infection, but still protection against hospitalizations and deaths. Then they considered, all, right if that is the case, what is the advantage of decreasing and infections. That the evidence that a booster can decrease infections. We dont have that evidence. Yet based on the current evidence they have, they have said this, fourth i dont think its the end of the discussion. There is an ongoing discussion of whether the series itself should be three doses. And we have to consider people who got Moderna And Johnson johnson who are starting to hear conversations about a potential Fda Advisory on that is. Well i hope people are paying attention. Those were all important points. General, we turn to you and your lifes work and the pentagons very emotional admission today. In circumstances like this, i always tried to quote the Leonard Cohen Lyric warning us about being blinded by the beauty of our weapons, as he rode it, and he meant just that. Talk about military mistakes, always in the back of your mind as a combatant commander, especially in this era when we are used to the pentagon proudly pointing out surgical strikes, as they have called them. Difficult to imagine a surgical strike in the city of 6 Million people that doesnt have enormous risk. Never mind the fact that during that strike we obviously didnt have almost any eyes on the ground. These are over the horizon Drone Strikes. It would also, i think, their teeth were on edge. We just had a couple hundred afghans and Military Personnel killed a few days earlier by a sole suicide bomber. We got intel frankly, brian, these Drone Strikes, at a general statement, are safer to manage, to be sure of your target, then our f16s or one five five artillery. They follow this vehicle for eight hours. So i thought they had target fixation, they didnt have cross reference intelligence. They made a mistake and they killed ten innocent civilians. So it is a tragedy, as we pull out of afghanistan, while we continue to strike isis, alqaeda, and other terrorists, from over the horizon. We are going to have a continuing challenge. Tom and jonathan lynn, here how did this News Today complicate things for america in the region and around the world . It certainly did, brian. It came today in about as bad of an hour as the u. S. President has had in quite some time. This is a moment where the White House really wanted to reset, start focusing again on the President S domestic agenda, the two huge bills, the Infrastructure Bill and the Reconciliation Package that needs to pass through congress in the next couple of weeks. They wanted that to be the priority. Thinking afghanistan had faded from the headlines. And, today came rushing back. Within that hour. An hour after the president landed in delaware further weakened away. We had the Booster News from the fda, we had the french say they were pulling their ambassador because of their anger that the deal, the u. S. And the uk made with australia made over submarines. And now ten civilians killed, seven children. The White House of course this is complicated. They have been telling americans, and our allies, that they can pull out of afghanistan. The Military Presence could no longer be, there and yet they would keep americans safe from tariff its. In part because of the over the Horizon Intelligence capabilities. This was likely the last Drone Strike in afghanistan. It was a tragic mistake. It does cast doubt over whether the fact Horizon Intelligence it will be enough to prevent terrorist groups from forming and thriving in afghanistan. Theres a lot of anger in the region over what happened here. A lot of questions again about the decision, as wide as the White House likes to point to public polling saying that most americans say that it was time for the u. S. To come home after 20 years in afghanistan, this is the way the information was conducted remains more than 100,000 people who got, out remains a problem for the White House. They are still answering questions, and serious and deadly ones. Doctor, back to your area of expertise, im not doing this to inject politics, im doing this for a reason. I want to remind our audience, some of the other utterances of the president on Booster Shots, before we continue our discussion the plan is for every adult to get a booster, eight months after you got your second shot. Pending approval from the Food And Drug administration, the Cdcs Committee of outside experts, will be ready to start these Booster Programs during the week of september 20. We are going to start mid september. But we are considering starting. Earlier as soon as they are, authorize those who are eligible will be able to get a booster right away. In Tens Of Thousands of sites across the country. Doctor, you appropriately ran through the list of all that remains, including, but not limited, to determinations on Moderna And J j. But how do you deal with all the gray areas . How do you deal with the people of means and access to, we both know, are going to go ahead and get the booster, come hell or high water. How do you deal with the people who go to the doctor who look who say im 60, to m 60, three i am 64. This just got, it seems to, me as a lay person, very complicated. I think that im glad the administration took the stance of saying, look, boosters will be needed because it was starting to become clear that they would be needed i think that the two communicative missteps were setting a date and saying that it will be available for everybody to start with. Partly because eight months is not not every person who got the vaccine has gotten to their eight Month Mark so far. One of the questions that was raised today was, i would just not seeing waning immunity against severe disease and younger people because most of them got april, may, as their vaccines. And we just got them jis it just that they are different inherently from people who are older. I think there is enough room with the current advisement from the committee, which by the, way the fda could modifying the cdc next week may sort of put more definitions and what they mean. But within that, it says, people who are over 65, or people who are high risk, and that is medical conditions as well as Occupational Exposures theres a lot of room for exactly that gray area the you are talking about because Health Care workers could fall into, that Frontline Essential Workers could fall into that. You might see some interpretation it will be interesting to see how the cdc and the committee interprets that and gives like that. And i will say though that this will come back again. New data will evolve for that younger population. I wouldnt be surprised if in a month or two months we are back again discussing whether or not there should be an extension. Currently we dont have the data. And we have a whole world that is without vaccines. Absolutely, i am so happy that you keep making that point when we have you on the broadcast as it needs to be made. Regularly to an american audience. General, lets talk about someone you know and that is general milley. However much twitter may not like it, lets talk about communications in the real world. When your title is, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, talk about how regularly, he or she would communicate with their counterparts overseas in a process that has grown in regularity since the Cold War and many have credited for making The World A List Dangerous place. They should minimize the fact this wasnt the initial chairmans phone call. Im not buying that. Secretary Mark Esper high minded talented experienced secondary of Defense And Milley were worried about the chinese taking under the reaction to what they perceived as a possible strike. Thats what was going on. It wasnt business as usual. They were watching the meltdown in the White House and getting scared. Secretary esper and milley wanted to throw cold water on their fears. Having said that secretary, chairman the political adviser from the state department, and he routinely reads out to his counterparts across the world, both adversaries as well as friendly nations, to reassure, maintain contact. So do all the combatant commanders. I had routine contact as a commander of the senior military and political leaders throughout latin america. Promoting human rights, promoting discipline in the armed forces. Theres two sides to this coin. Look we were worried. We, the u. S. Armed forces, in my view, about trump and his final days, nuclear weapons are just a zero defect program. We werent going to ever let that get close to the line. At the same time i think there was a concern. Might you use the insurrection act, mighty command u. S. Military forces on the streets of america. This was a tricky period for america, our constitutionalist was in some jeopardy in my view. Jonathan let mere take 60 seconds and tell our audience, who may have been otherwise busy today, how we managed to piss off france. And in my reading of history, i am sure there wouldnt be a united states without friends. Im fairly certain that wouldnt be a friends without the united states. How did this go down . How is it going to end up . Youre right about that. Our oldest ally helping us in the american revolution, and we helped inspire them and their own revolution a short time later. Brian, heres what happened. The united states early this week, president biden, i was at the White House when it happened. He announced would have been secret negotiations between the u. S. , uk, and australia. To former neutral audible alliance mainly to become a bulwark against chinese aggression in the south china sea. Chinas name, not mentioned in the News Conference by those leaders, but it was all about china. A key part of this was, as mentioned earlier, a nuclear Submarine Deal with u. S. , share technology australia. Sensitive technology, very classified technology to build nuclear fleets. Not weapons, but to have propulsion. Weve done that as a country wants before to great britain during the Cold War, as a Defense Mechanism against the soviet union. This time, Australia Defense against china. Well, The Catch here is france, got angry, twice, for two different reasons. Once because they felt like they were cut out of this alliance, and secondly because they had a deal to build submarines with australia, billions and billions of dollars worth. This was economic low as well. Anger from beijing, anger from paris, far less so predictable. Weve heard from officials who said they compared president bidens actions to those of President Trump saying, hey, biden came into office saying he was going to be a reliable partner, an ally we could trust again. What happened to that . Moreover, in a fit of anger, they canceled a Gala Set for washington next week to celebrate u. S. Entrenched cooperation. Yes, a gala, they know you know you are serious. They were called their Ambassador Something that never happened between these two countries before. A diplomatic break in the sign of real tension. There is a believe that the ambassador would return in the next few weeks, next week at the united nations general assembly. President biden will smooth over this. Realtime jim with one of our oldest allies. Couldnt imagine three better friends of the broadcast to call a formal and merciful end to this week. Along with us, our thanks for starting us off on this broadcast tonight. Have a good weekend. All Coming Up for us its been 241 days since Donald Trump was president of the united states. It is his grip on his party stronger today . Two of our best Political Minds Standing by to weigh in. And later the pulitzer prizewinning Columnist And Author George Will with choice words for those he accuses of hijacking the conservative movement, which is now obviously barely recognizable. Noticed a pattern when it comes to who the twice impeached former president chooses to endorse as political reports a, quote, if there is a thread running through nearly all of trumps endorsements, it is his habit of rewarding allies and punishing enemies. To some republicans, trumps efforts to take down gop incumbents in a federal and state races are at odds with the Parties Interest in a Midterm Election where republicans are within striking distance every Capturing Control of congress. A lot to think about and talk about. We have two great dress to do that with us. Don galloway calloway, sorry, democratic Strategist And Founder of the national Voter Production Action fund, and Bill Crystal author, writer, thinker, veteran of the bush administrations, and editor at large at the bulwark. Don some people have said the California Result shows Donald Trumps waning influence. I think it probably just shows a Big Blue State of 40 Million people. Democrats arent going to get so lucky as to run against mr. Elder and all the races they face. Is there a way to bottle and franchise some of the playbook they used in california, do you think . I think the best part of the playbook that they could use is this Idea Larry Elder was fundamentally anti vaccine. He believed in George Zimmerman as some type of superhero, at anti mask guy. I dont think nationwide democrats are going to have the privilege of running against a more on such as Larry Elder. Larry elders best described as perhaps the Soccer Mc as i would say in hiphop. Hes not a serious candidate nor a serious person. Hes been on conservative radio for over 20 years. That nonetheless, doesnt make him a serious individual to be the leader of one of our nations most prominent states. Leader oi dont Think Democratsn take the Larry Elder model and modify that across our electoral footprint in 2022. With that, said i think there is a real way we can point out republican School Board and County Council and City Council ways of being antivaccination, anti mask, and play that out. Democrats are going to have to do a good job of going more moderate more anti covid19 and temping down the joe mentions of the world and the blocks between us and real Infrastructure Progress and talk about covid19 and how we are making progress on it. I dont think california was a legitimate bellwether for the electoral map in 2022. Bill let me get this straight. It was the subject of the lead into the segment. Trump is working to get certain elected republicans defeated. Period and of sentence. And despite that because of that. Republicans still cant form a negative word about him for the most part. Right because they are scared they will be feted by someone he supports. I dont think thats what drove Anthony Gonzales. I think he thought he would win he got 63 of the vote in 2020 in that district. The district will be withdrawn this year. He ran ahead of trump by a couple of. Points this young rich guy, former Trump Aide Son of a wealthy parent and grandparents. Not an impressive opponent. I think you could have slug it out and got himself renominated and elected. Whats most striking about what Anthony Gonzales said in public, and i know youve said this in private, he did not want to be part of the house republican Conference Conference next. Year not a conference run by Kevin Mccarthy who was doing what Donald Trump wants and tells him to do. Did not want to be part of a conference that at least stefanik would become the number three member of. The head of the whats called . Whatever, number 3 in the House Republican Conference by endorsing, embracing conspiracy theories. Did not want to be telling people not to get vaccinated. Calling into doubt the scientists, the federal governments selfworth. He is a conservative republican. Its not the moderates, conservative. If you are more moderate, i think he might have been easier to make this decision. To just leave. The question is, what does he do now . Talking with democrats in the house, the more they are urging him to be a democratic candidate in that district. It seems possible, hes conservative, there is no strong democrat in the district. Its pretty republican. The only kind of democrat who could win would be someone who could get a lot of former republican votes,. That would be someone like gonzalez. I dont think its likely to happen, i dont think its impossible, though. Well, this still could get interesting and we are duty bound to note his family had received threats because of his vote to impeach the president. That tells you everything you need to know about 2021. Both of these gentlemen, don and bill, have a great agreed to stick around with us as we get a break. And Coming Up, if he glances at the news or perhaps his schedule for next week. Joe biden might stop to stay in delaware for a few days. Re for a few days. We stay around here almost every Friday Night the president is facing yet another daunting, critical week. While congress struggles with funding the government next week, things like. That biden will be taking on the virus, the, climate and his growing Foreign Policy Problems during his first trip to the un as president. Republicans will be able willing to pounce on and his every word, movement, and. Syllable still with us don Calloway And Bill crystal. Bill, i want to play something for you. This is from the former star the revolution has begun, a Silent Revolution by the democratic party and Joe Biden to take over the. Country this is not a government illegals who are here who are going to take our education, our health, care its government. It is politics. It is Health Care. It is safety. So bill, to my ears, that is the great Replacement Theory that used to be a kind of whispered trope, now we are saying it out loud on live television, does it work when you say it out loud on television . I would hope not. Maybe it works for the viewers of that show. I dont think it works for americans broadly. I think theyre a lot of democratic he said somewhere else that these illegal immigrants will have two or three kids and they will be voters in 18 years, they will be taking it away from us. Us, meaning, as a, take a white christians, what like the Lieutenant Governor texas. Its pretty blatant. Weve seen this over the past few days, conservatives talking On Fox elsewhere and republican politicians. Sort of the racial Bigotry Damascus come off a little more than it used. To there is one point about Joe Biden, i thought a lot about this. Everyone gets too high, too low in these administrations. The good news for the biden administration is they dont have some terrible albatross that is going to drag them down. Its not like Obamacare Which was pretty clear at this Point Failure unfairly. It did not succeed in convincing the country. It became a big problem. True with clinton with his Health Care plan. I dont biden doesnt do anything like. That one assumes that he will turn the corner on the virus, despite the delta variant. One assumes that the economy will be. Okay i think biden is in decent shape to at least five to a draw and that will be just Trench Warfare for the house in the senate in 2022 which again goes back to the question we were talking about in the first segment, can you get some of those moderate voters who did vote for biden to stick with the democrats in 2022 which goes to the question of, how worried are they about the republican party . Do they think its a republican party . Even their own congressman, it seems like they think, you are putting in power a party that has people like, like what you just showed. Hey don, heres something, we can talk politics some other night. It is. Friday tell me about a woman named joel callaway. To paraphrase bill weathers, who is she to you and why is this the start of a major 48 period in your family . I would like to believe that i was jonathan i came along. She integrated the Lorries County schools and alabama. I like to remind my senate democratic friends that when you are talking about whether or not to preserve the filibuster, you are asking whether or not callaway should be able to integrate the lawrence alabama. Schools and ultimately lived long enough to produce a wonderful Legacy Building families. And turned 72 this weekend. Right as i turn 40. To i love you my mom. Happy birthday to you, most importantly to your mom. We like that kind of thing around. Here to don calloway. I think we have established the son of callaway, and Bill Crystal, our, thank thank you for being here. Coming up after the break, he has been one of the most conservative prominent conservative voices through ten president ial he is old enough to remember what actual conservatism was like. He joins us to talk about it after this. Out it after this my next guest here tonight has spent decades writing about the evolution, lets, call it of the republican party. His latest book displays a collection of his astounding work that closely examines Americas Experience including this from June Of 2017 wooden and eastern time it was compared to. Now quote well back with us again tonight, pulitzer prizewinning Conservative Columnist for George Will, author of this book, American Happiness and discontents that. George, i want to begin right back with the quote i just read, the hijacking of the party. Whats in your view made it susceptible, made it so ripe, for a hijacking and then some, a hostile takeover. The republican party looking back on it folded faster than the Afghan Army . The thats a cruel but accurate way to put it right. When conservatism began to grow after the second world war, it began with a book by Richard Weaver entitled ideas have consequences. By the 1970s, he became my very well Best Friend was, said something astounding has happen. The republican party has become the party of ideas. It was a bookish party. They had been to yale, with the conservative mind. Fast forward, do you remember the 2020 just 14 months ago, the 2020 republican platform. Its a trick question, because there was none. They would continue to concede and need attempt to amend the 2016 platform will be ruled out of order. That was essentially the party saying, lets be candid, this is a lot personality, we will believe what the president tells us to believe. The question is, how is the party that was the party of ideas and 1970s Hollowed Out . I think the answer is that it began to despair of arguing its case. Thats because its case, the case of conservatism, is not that easy to argue. It says, there are principles and they are that we cannot do everything at once. That government is limited, therefore limited in what it can do for. You can do much, but not everything. It is a hard message to sell, but conservatives with a conservative position is, let us be people who say the difficult things. And they just got wary of it and gave up when they turn themselves over to an entertainer. Lets talk about a quote that i call the dr. Phil factor in the american presidency. This is on page 69 of your book. To the audience playing our home game, if you had alliteration for 60, you are among our witness tonight. But to george, will the author of that super paragraph, george, i saw this happen in realtime, i guess with the Arrival And Advance of the continent administration. They were having almost daily events very crafty use of media time and attention for the kind of Customer Service items, the small stuff of american, life which event eventually became the stuff of the effect Executive Actions i believe you are writing about. Here thats exactly right. People say its a shame the President S have usurped congressional power. To which the answer is all they had to usurp. Congress under both parties has been all too willing to hand over on the Silver Trade their power to the President S of both parties. Its become particularly bad from the conservative president because conservatives to say its very important we understand public opinion should be refined and filtered through representative institutions until it is made temperate and reasonable. Instead, conservatism has bought into what is the reverse of conservatism, which is populism. They believe public opinion should be translated directly and as fast as possible. By President S into policy without reference to other institutions. Furthermore, yeah idea mr. Trump head, and the republican party and its continuing loyalty to him had ideas it simply mistaken, evidence by the nonexistent 2020 platform. The republicans today, and in essence the democrats participate in this also. Happiness is defined by the unhappiness of the other team. As long as they are going through a kind of performative politics, striking buses, owning the lids, disciplining conservatives. The american people want things, but a fair number of them are setting the tone of our politics simply want to have their Grievances Acknowledgment in the other side articulated. Its hard to have that kind of conception of politics and take them into legislation. How do you write a law that does justice to the resentments people feel or want to have ratified . Its not politics as normal understood. Its not transactional. It has no way of being formulated into an agenda. Its a kind of particularly empty politics, and its emptiness, they tried to compensate for by its volume and by the very discouraging moment. With your permission, join us, sit out this quick break, i have a lasting important question to ask you about something you said to our mutual friend Andrea Mitchell today. How about a couple of nominations . Anyone come to mind . Sure. Ben sasse, a number of governors, i think Tom Cotton might be someone who could step forward, and say what needs to be said to a nation that is weary of being wary. Remember, when the democratic convention a 1964 receded as a mississippi delegate. Im tired of being second tired. I think someone is going to come forward and say americans, Deep Breath now, as lincoln said in his first inaugural, we are not enemies. We must not be enemies. People disagreements, big deal. If you dont like arguing, you pick the wrong country. We are in argumentative people. But someone is going to come forward and say weve had enough of data, mr. Trump has worked One Petal on the organ long enough. Relax, and the country is going to sigh in gratitude, i am sure of it, brian.
