The kind of framing that i put up, the way i set it up, do you think its the right way to look at it . There is a big concern here which is the undermining of american democracy. Look, it is commonplace but it is important to note that we are a nation of laws, not of people, and we have ways of running elections. Those are set in stone and really run the elections by those laws. We have done this for hundreds of years. A couple hundred years. That is how democracys work. Especially american democracies. What we are seeing right now is an attack on the rules by which we run our elections and a systematic attempt to call into question those incomes outcomes, based on what . New evidence . Violating new rules under which the elections were run. And trying to run around, i think the most important part of this last election, which is the which is that elections are determined on the facts. And weve already had the facts determined. The facts determined that Joe Biden is president. And this current set of socalled audits, at best, they are reviews. I dont know what they really are. They are not set in the facts. Because the facts have been established. They really are oriented around creating confusion among a set of voters who are looking to political leaders for assurance about the nature of democracy. They are not getting that assurance. And that is with a big problem. A very big problem. Why should it matter to the average voter, whether republican lawmakers in one state or another want to engage in this fact free Sham Election Review and create confusion around whether or not Election Results can be trusted . I can imagine plenty of people saying, i recognize it will have that effect on other people, thinking people are not going to believe in the results of these weird, Partisan Review exercises. The people who are going to be persuaded by whatever is announced as a result of these things, they were ready to believe anything anyway. So what is the danger here if these are people who are already willing to be diluted . I think the danger is that is oftentimes overlooked. Democracy depends on the trust of the people, but it also depends on the Election Officials and the courts, and the people in charge, to do their jobs and do their job according to the law. Doing that is a meticulous fact based process that is really hard to do. And you are not paid a whole lot for. It so i think that the big story here is the relentless harassment of good people who are following the law, who are not in it for the money, and that they are being hounded either to, apparently, do what Apple And Google did was, acquiesce. Or to get out of the business. So democracy, everywhere, depends on people doing meticulous, boring things right all the time. And to have this Kickoff Funny of subpoenas, and doubts, and death threats thrown at you constantly, is wearing on the people who wear the stewards of democracy. I think that is actually the big problem. Imagine anybody trying to do their job. Their job honestly. And having your boss, or having someone in the next cubicle, or somebody just down on the street, yelling at you constantly. What are you going to do . You will get out of there. That is what we worry about. Is that, in the long term, this process could very well run out of the elections business. People who have been conscientious. People who root for one team or the other, in their spare time, but when they are on the job, they do their job well and they do it as well as they can according to the law. I think the big story here is that they are in the crosshairs thats a bad term to use. But they are being targeted. I worry that people who have been trying to do the right thing are going to be replaced by folks who are less experienced, at best, and have run motives, at worse. Thats a very important reminder, that the systems we talk about and that we treasure and depend on and think of as our political inheritance, these are systems that are only made up of people. Ultimately, the panel had to answer this Question Today Law in other words, should everybody over 16 should get a Booster Shot . The answer in The End was. No they voted 16 to 2 against recommending a Booster Shot for anyone 16 on. Over then they considered a narrower question. How about 65 an older. And for people who are at high risk of developing severe covid . The answer to that question was unanimous, they voted 18 to 0 that the answer to that question should be yes. These votes that the Booster Shot is not appropriate for everyone above 16 law, but it is approved for people above 60 law, yes law. The advisory Panel Today said the fda should consider including, in the risk and the list of people who should get Booster Shots, Health Care workers and other people who are at risk of getting exposed to covid on the job. If the fda to accept that suggestion, that would mean that Booster Shots are not recommended for everybody. They are recommended for people aged 65 an, up for people with comorbidities, and recommended for Health Care workers and teachers, other Essential Workers who are at high risk because of their job. Interesting prospect. In terms of what is going to happen next, we are likely to get if f formal fda decision. Today was just the advisory panel. The fda is not required to accept the recommendations, but they usually. Do the Cdc Committee will also meet next week and then we will get a Cdc Decision on this matter. So we will see what happens from here. But in terms of why the expectations of the Media Today were so different than public experts we expectations, im interested in. Is it correct to say that these Decisions Today were broadly expected in the public Health Community even though, and a lot of the, media they were treated as surprising developments . Absolutely. Youve got that completely. Right i think all of us predicted that this is exactly what would happen because weve all been looking at the science and the data for highrisk people over 65 is clear. So we expected the Fda Committee to say is. Much the data for younger peoples less clear. Its not that they dont need a booster, we just dont know right. Now i expect that the issue will be revisited in a couple of months when we have more data. But i think most of us thought that we are not there yet, we cant make The Call. Yet thats where the Fda Advisory Committee came out with as well. Does the age 65 cut off seem clearly indicated to you by the data . Is that, in terms of how clinical trials are structured in these matters, is 65 the relevant cut off point . Is it possible that the data also recommends with a similar sort of Risk Benefit Profile for people aged 60, or aged 55 . This is a good question. A lot of the trials in the u. S. Tend to look at 65 as a Cut Point for thinking about older people. Why 65 . 65 is also the Cut Point for medicare, theres a whole history of using 65 in the united states. The best data right now from israel, and israel actually used 60. So if i were sitting here last night predicting, i wouldve said the Fda Panel is gonna come down on 60 as Bucket Point because of the israeli data. They picked 60. Five obviously, there is no single magical number. If you are 63 and one booster, you might be feeling a little frustrated tonight. Lets see what the fda does and the cdc does in the final recommendations. But we 65 is a reasonable Cut Point. For people who are watching this tonight who were vaccinated with the moderna vaccine, or vaccinated with johnson johnson, which they take away from this decision which, after, all was specific to pfizer . Specific to pfizer because pfizer is The One whos collected the data and submitted to the fda, and that is what was review today.
