They are going to go into orbit almost 360 miles above earth. Higher than the orbit of the international space station. The crew, is composed entirely civilians. There is as i said a billionaire who founded thE Trip. Also Physicians Assistant from sainthood research center, a data engineer, and a geoscience professor, who is nearly selected for the Astronaut Program 12 years ago, getting a very cool second chance. Those dont usually happen. So were going to witness, basically is the closest thing that we have ever seen here in the u. S. It least to cut the kind of dream that we were sold as children. The futuristic dream of Space Travel availablE To normal people. Non trained astronauts, people being ablE To just get on a rocketship, and gauge in Space Travel, for the first time. Cal Perry Call joins me now, he is standing by the launch. What are we going to see here . Hey chris so this rocket could takE Them over 17,000 miles an hour, when they were detached, return to earth on a Drone Ship, a second rocket would push them into orbit, and this crew should be orbiting the earth 15 times a day in the next three days. Truly historical moment. Chris i think we are going to get very close right now. I think theyre about to take off, so standby. We are getting pretty closE To launch time, i think we should listen in to the Space X awry stream. [inaudible] [applause] [applause] [applause] [inaudible] [inaudible] tminus 15 seconds. [applause] [applause] ignition and liftoff. E [inaudible] copy one alpha. [inaudible] E T Plus 30 seconds [inaudible] the spark in the flame, the inspiration for crew, The Crew [inaudible]. [noise] went down in the preparation for maximum dynamic pressure. [noise] we arE Through to clear the dynamic of maximum pressure. One bravo the color from space, that is one of the [inaudible] that is a normal call. Everything continues to be good. Looks like a smooth ride for The Crew. [applause] [inaudible] were passing through 3g acceleration, and everything is extending and looking to be [inaudible]. Forties were holding up there for The Crew. Major event coming up with the main engine cutoff. Followed by state separation. Looking at The Second Stage nozzle. And in addition for The Second Stage. And Nico Face preparation complete. [applause] [inaudible] another kick. Officially the inspiration for crew are now on their way to space. First you can see on the Lefthand Side of your screen is making its way back down to earth. They have popped up to assist with the. Staring we are making a Landing Attempt on our george strip, just read the instruction. Which is part out. Its Holding On [inaudible] to the atlantic ocean. As kate mentioned Lefthand Side it is the view of our top stage looking down. That has already separated from the second. Stage and its making its way back to. Or the velocity of the first stage is being tracked on the bottom left Hand Side of your screen. On the rightHand Side of your screen, is the view of our second Stage Maryland Vacuum engine. On the opposite end of that engine is The Second Stage and The Crew who sits on top of The Second Stage, everything looks to be going normal. Normally with them. And you can also track the Velocity City on the. We also have awesome view of The Crew insidE The capsule as well. I am pretty sure so that all civilian crew appears to be in space basically. It took them about two minutes and 40 seconds to get there. Cal i think youre still there. So so far so. Good i really dont understand what i just saw, can you explain what i just saw . I will certainly do my best, so this is a two Stage Rocket. What that means is that the bottom bit of the rocket fires first, that gets them almost all the way through that orbit, that gives him the power 17,000 and 500 to get out of orbit, to get past where branson went, past where bezos went. No offensE There. Thats just the reality. The second Stage Rocket which can be fined multiplE Times, by the, way is what is going to carry them to the orbit of 357 miles around the earth. One mixed piece six different, is that they reusE These rockets. The rocket that just carried four civilians, the new for american if youre not into. Speeds has already been used twice. Its put to military satellites into space already. And i am watching it return to earth. Which is completely. What it looks like an Upside Down Flashlight in the sky. And i can see it returning to what will be a Drone Ship out to sea. The other thing that they were, uses the actual capsulE That these four astronauts are now writing. In this capsule has been to the international space station, right now spacex is your only way on or off the international space station. They arE The main contractor for nasa. That is why we are here at cape canaveral, nobody does it better than they, do and they are showing it today with again what is a automated system. So in theory, the way that this is going to work is that hopefully, you and i are going to get on this rocket with no training. And not havE To press any buttons, we go 357 miles abovE The earth, we rotate for three, days we go 15 times around the, and we come back down and splash down in the atlantic. And they control everything in california. That is thE Technology that we are watching right. Now that is a no for me dogs, but i will root you on cal, to do, that. There is something in treating theoretically, but i guess from an engineering perspective, the problem to get to something like routine civilian spaceflight, exploration, that spacex has been trying to solve, is that rocket. Issue is the cost. Issue and one of them is reusing through rockets. So the first rocket fell away, the old model, the onE That [inaudible] they dont reuse. Thems spacex used a lot of try an error to be ablE To usE Them. And that is now coming back, and its going to land on a Drone Ship. What is that . So it is an automated ship that is floating off the coast of florida, somewhere in the atlantic, it is not controlled onsite, the ship is controlled somewhere form again, california, where spacex bases their operations. But that is the gamechanger. And in your intro what you said makes a difference is that its basics. What makes basics different is that they can rely on these. Rockets saving tens of millions of dollars. And to give you an idea of how difficult that is, they first did this a decade ago, and No One has done it. SincE They are still the only company that does. I think we are actually watching it now you, wE Take Space X is propriety feet here, im i looking down the barrel of that Booster Rocket which is no longer in view . I think it may have just touchdown, well get confirmation on that but i think that if the rockets one off it may be down. We will get confirmation on, that were watching this together. The one of the right youre seeing, now that is definitely that second booster. Rocket and again they can fire multiplE Times. If they need. Two but again, just sort of to keep what werE Talking, about it is the reusing of this material that makes it cheap enough to hopefully in the future open the door to more of this pete, quote, tourism. And their next school in january, they arE Trying to get four civilians on to the international space station. So they arE Trying to take some of the specialty out of. This they arE Trying to open it up to everybody. Im a little skeptical that that is going to happen, but lets listen to that for a second, to their control. And then we will wait for confirmation offguard orbit. At the samE TimE The first stage will be beginning of landing and here we have [applause] we just saw them shut off turned. [applause] nominal Orbit Insertion that is amazing. [inaudible] an unexplored frontier, many are about to follow. It is pretty incredible. Stage one landing. [applause] we just heard from jared thanking everybody. The Dragon Capsule and crew are in a nominal orbit in a few minutes here we will begin opening that, in a few minutes from The Second Stage, and shortly after that we will begin opening that [laughs] [inaudible] but at the samE Time we landed the on. As if the second Stage Action Wasnt exciting enough. [laughs] so there is that in fact ended that you mentioned beforE That has already shut down, in an event of second engine cut off, and The Crew are now. So cal it sounds likE The first Booster Land successfully my civilian Crew Look happy and healthy as they are about to separate from the second booster, and enter into actual space orbit. The folks at Space X understandably work very hard, there are 10 Million a Rocket Worth coming back. And they are just going to chill out there for three days in orbit . Yes they are going to run some experiences but these are all designed to see if you and i can go to space. To see if people who do not havE The scientific training, that mathematical education, or are not astronauts, that we can get into a capsule and circled the. Or two of these crew members, six months ago, werent even trying to go to. Space one basically won a lottery and was ablE To go. And the other one was called out of the blue, and said would you likE To go to space. That is what spacex is going. For they arE Trying to show peoplE That this can be done by ordinary citizens. I think you and i both know there is a many cause barrier, that still lie in that way. And there is a number of other options, spacex is trying to get into the spacE Tourism industry. But the big thing on spacex, here is that they are resupplying, and starting a Satellite Mesh System that will surround the planet and give opportunities to. Everybody Saw Spacex as a much broader golden spacE Tourism. You Landmarks Gold is to make humans and, Inter Planets Pcs Along With but that is the vision along that road. They appear to not be an orbit, the cost at least apparently jarred is the billionaire who paid for this, which again Bucket List Sort of thing. And when you run out of other things to spend money on. He reportedly paid 200 million. Which is a lot of money. But, cost out of high, and they do overtime. What exactly will they do if it remains. Cal thank you so much for monitoring that for, us and let that work the. I am, to thank you chris, very quickly, onE Thing i should mention that this makE This different also. St. Jews hospital races, kids with cancer they want to reach 200 million, thats if we can get there between 100 and 200 million, they arE Taking a bunch of things with them to space, that they can auction off for that purpose. All right cal thank you, really appreciated. Up next we will begin all in with the decisive results of california republicans got actually select in the Recall Elections. What it means for the long jeopardy of trumpism, next. That is incredible. Its the multiflex tailgate. It can be a step, it can even become a workspace. I meant the cat. Whats so great about him . He doesnt have a workspace. The Chevy Silverado with the available multiflex tailgate. Find new adventures. Find new roads. Chevrolet. Age before beauty . Why not both . Visibly diminish wrinkled skin in. Crepe corrector lotion. Only from gold bond. Well, would ya look at that it was an accident. I was speaking of accidents, we accidentally left you off the Insurance Policy during enrollment, and youre not covered. Not even a little bit . Mmmmm. No insurance. No. When Employees Cant enter and managE Their own benefits enrollment information, it can be a real pain. Did you know diarrhea is often caused by bad bacteria in food . Try pepto® diarrhea. Its concentrated formula coats and kills bacteria to relieve diarrhea. See, pepto® diarrhea gets to the source, killing the bad bacteria. So, make surE To have pepto® diarrhea on hand. In business, its never just another day. Its the big sale, or the big presentation. The day where everything goes right. Or The One where nothing does. With Comcast Business you get the network that can deliver Gig Speeds to the most businesses and advanced cybersecurity to protect every device on it all backed by a dedicated team, 24 7. Every day in business is a big day. Well keep you ready for whats next. What happened the last time we Comcast Business powering possibilities. Had the first term democratic president in office. I was, there i covered it, you probably remember its, you and Barack Obamas first year in office, we saw sue seismic elections as warnings dines of what was to come in American Politics, both of them were sort of the precursor are part of thE Tea party movement. The right swing of the electorate, that led to the 2010 midterms in the redistricting, and the intense backlash politics that would go on to shapE The current republican party. The first of the Big Bombshell Elections was in the very blue state of new jersey. Obama won that state by morE Than 15 points in the very next year, ten months as the Obama Administration, Republican Chris Christie prevailed over the incumbent democratic governor. At thE Time, a lot of people understandably and probably rightly saw it as a direct blow to obama. New jersey voters also elected Hit A republican governor Last Night republican governor Chris Cyst some gop members say the results show that voters are fed up with the Obama Administration agenda but the White House said the election was not a referendum on the president or his policies and that thE Tough economy madE This election difficult. Probably somE Truth and both of those interpretations. But even greater blow to democrats camE That next january. And that was the special election for ten kennedy second see, following his death in august of 2000. This was massachusetts, its a statE That similar to california and how dame accredited stemming that its an enduring democratic stronghold. Ted kennedy, was basically the kind of patriarch of the democratic party the, last a Living Sign of those brothers. And it madE The republicans victory over the democrat even more earth shattering. A development that may affect this nations foreign policy, Health Care policy, perhaps the remainder of the obama presidency. Its hard to believe it happens on The One Year Anniversary of the swearing in of president obama. Its almost like a Hollywood Plot tests. The Name Martha quickly may someday be a footnote in history, but in washington today, for the president , she stood for a symbol of voter anger. Scott brown, winning ten kennedys liberal Massachusetts Senate Seat in january 2010, beforE The midterms. It was seen not only as a huge upset, but also again, a referendum on President Bidens agenda. As was Chris Christies win the year beforE That now, its ten years later, partisanship is become more predictive in American Politics especially as america has become more polarized. But, nothing is preordained in politics the crazy things happen. Opinions change, and theres a very wellknown model of this, that imagines Public Opinion like a thermostat. When the public perceives thE Temperatures being too hot, the government is doing too much spending your activism, they tell the politicians to turn it down. If it seems too cold, the public is always moving in opposition to the party thats controlling the White House. This is a fairly reliable phenomenon. We saw this in Barack Obamas first term. Part of that producE ThE Tea party, those huge victories. We saw it happen in Donald Trump, when democrats swept back control of the house in 2018. And becausE This is a reliablE Thing, and even happen to let people like fdr in lbj, theres some evidencE That its happening with joe biden, but if we follow the president here, the reason it was an error of anxiety, if you recall Last Nights first eight months of the biden administration, and the first big test of the enduring effects of trumpism, without trump on the ballot, the results are not even close, given this phenomenon, i was just talking, about their Midst Attic Public Opinion its called in political science. The fact that we were 18 months into the pandemic, we hoped we had left behind by now, i personally as i was reading thE Tea leaves on this, and covering this race. Was fully prepared for a less decisive outcome. It seems pretty clear from the polling, that newsom would prevail in the recall. He would not be recalled. But it really would not have been surprising if he won by ten or 12 points. But it turned out to be much much more unambiguous. It was a resounding, but kicking blow out the republican party, and the Recall Effort were destroyed, humiliated, as a result currently stands by a margin of morE Than 27 points. 63 point 9 to 36 point. OnE That is with 70 of the vote, and as we get the rest the margin main aerial bit, based on who voted one. But remember the benchmark here is Gavin Newsoms initial election in 2018. Again that was a strong year for democrats, in that year, new someone with a 23 point margin. To go through the first two and a half years of your administration by the way during a once in a century pandemic, and a huge recession. And to have lost no support, is basically the opposite of what we saw happen in 2009, with those Chris Christie and Scott Brown elections in those so called referendums on Barack Obama. If Gavin Newsoms recall results i was a referendum on biden, its good for the president. If this election was a referendum on trumpism, and newsom and democrats try to make it into one, it is very good for democrats. And if it was a referendum on Gavin Newsom so called tax and spend liberalism, will its very good for tax and spend Rib Liberalism in for the governor. Keep in, mind this election was about a lot of things, covid Safety And Recovery where huge issues, democrats we are clearly leaning into that, president Barack Obama actually sent that message in this Campaign Ad he recorded, for the anti Recall Effort. Governor newsom has spent the past year and a half, protecting california communities. Now republicans arE Trying to recall him from office. And overturn covid Safety Measures for Health Care workers, and school staff. Your vote could bE The difference between protecting our kids, and putting them at risk. Helping californians recover, or taking us backwards. Thats a 32nd spot in which theres one issue, that Barack Obama want you to vote. On covid restrictions. The Recall Election was also about foreign President Trumpism in the big lie. In Fact Newsom himself, referencE The danger that often the campaign trail, and again Last Night. I think about, in just the last few days, the former president put out saying this election was rigged. Democracy is not a football. You dont throw it around. Its more like an antique vase. You can drop and smashed in 1 Million different pieces. And thats what were capable of doing if we dont stand up to meet the moment and push back. Somewhat tempted to recall that metaphor. But ultimately, this election is about the nature of the republican party right now i think. How it cannot reach a certain portions of americans. Huge swaths. Its just failing to reach them. It is even trying to. My very favorite anonymous dog on twitter, southpaw, pointed out that the only reason republicans went for the recall in the first place, is because it gavE Them a shot at a fluke outcomE They otherwise had noshow at. They are so unpopular in the state, when both parties are serious contenders in californias ordinary elections, the recall is not too attractive. They better usE This for their money in their own officeholders to protect. But for california republicans, who are mostly utterly shut on the government, it looks pretty good. So thats what happened. HerE The California Gop lacking better options, tried to shoot the moon. Republicans put up a bunch of candidates in this, racE The most plausible from a resume standpoint, in terms of the state, was the former mayor of san diego, that guy. Kevin falcon are. For republican, hes a moderate, he reports pathway to citizenship. Peep describes himself this prochoice. All that sounds as a potentially attractive candidate in california which is a pretty liberal state. Democratic dominated. How do you do. Well not well. He did not even get 10 of the vote. He came in third, among the candidates. Trying to replace Governor Newsom, with just point 8. 6 . Because heres the problem. The republicans who came out to vote in the recall, they dont want someone like Kelvin Falcon or. Whos actually governed and is a plausible state candidate. Thats not what they want. They want the right winged Radio Host, Larry Elder who got 46. 8 of the vote. Thats the problem. The republican party base, wants a right ring Radio Host who opposes minimum wage, has no government experience, they want him to run the fifth largest economy in the world. The citizens of that state, california, do not want that by any means. That is the state of the republican party right now. That is the dilemma they face. Katie hill is a former Democrat Congresswoman from california, shes founder of a political action committee. Supporting women in politics. And the author of she will rise. Becoming a warrior in the battle for sure equality. And Stewart Stevens is a veteran of five republican campaigns. He also happen where Chris Christies governor aerial race in 2000. Nine Hes Offer of it was all a lie. How the republican party became Donald Trump. And they both join me now. Stuart i will start with. You as someone whos run in a lot of races. OnE Thing i think is important when you analyze elections is, who wins and loses. Which matters a lot. From the governing perspective, but if yourE Trying to look at trends, there are losses that are good, losses if things swing eight points to one party from the last, time but we still come up short, you can say, hey we made some ground here. A member special election, the first big one down in georgia. He did not win but clearly there was movement. I dont think you could find a single silver lining, in this result for the republican party. Honestly. It wasnt that long ago where california was the Beating Heart of the republican party. It was the ideological higher. It was electoral college center. Now the party, rounds between third and second place. Independents more importantly the party does not have any role in any major decisions and how to govern california. Youre absolutely right, theres crazy stuff like. This is really a classic race about neoism. There is nothing this race was about, except that newsom donE Too much to protect the citizens about california . It was sort of like a referendum on death . Im glad deaf lost. But what does that say about the party . Theres really no ideas. TherE This is the party that wants pride on itself that was saying we arE The party of ideas. It there were absolutely no ideas at all. Katy you had represented and won a Swing District, the 25th District in california. A Swing District. And your successors were republican. Joe biden carried the district, republican also represents that district. Mike garcia who voted against seeding the electors, one of the first things he did in congress, which is shocking to me, the no One Year old district won by nine points. What does that say to you about the politics of this . About the politics of this moment in, a district that is a Swing District . I think it really shows you is that the republican party, the way that it is, its a Lost Cause in california. Its a Lost Cause in minor areas. When you have candidates, that truly embracE This trump ideology. This ideology of frankly insanity. I honestly dont know another way to put it. Then thats not going to succeed, in areas where most people are reasonable. What i fear, and what happened with garcia, is he did not run as a crazy person. That was not the way that voters werE Turned on him in the first place. And i think that we are really going to havE To watch this as we go into the midterms. ThE Thing that will kill republicans, as they havE The best odds going into getting the house again, is their own primaries. And if their base continues to try to put forward people who are lunatics, then its not going to be successful. It really is a matter of whether they are ablE To gerrymander and redistrict into capturing that anyway. But if the keep putting forward people like Larry Elder, by their own base, by theyre choosing, its not going to. Work this Stewart Story to me is a story about the modern republican party. He is a guy that was a Big City mayor. If you werE To draw up a closet will resume for who, conjure over someone who might have a shot and a statewide General Election in california, he sort of matches. But there is zero desire for that dude. In the republican base. None whatsoever. And if theres nonE There, then you cant actually get people likE That elected two important positions. Yeah look the republican party is not about governing. Its about a Classic Political Party now that has a different ideological view from the other party and you argue about the ideology its really a party that exists to elect republicans, sort of for the sake of power for powers sake. I worked in this party for 30 years. In the center right. If you held a gun to my head and said what does it mean to be a conservative in america today, i would say shoot. May i know i can. And Theres Nothing there. It becomes this kind of racE To the bottom. And the fact that the position now in the republican party, is that we dont live in a democracy. That President Biden was not legally elected. Which means we live in unoccupied country. Just wrap your mind around that. That did not happen since 1860. That did not turn out. So katie you said, the path forward to republicans, in those districts is basically kind of run candidates, who can then go and join a basically Larry Elder caucus. Which is to Leg Run folks in those districts, who might be amenablE To the district, yourE Than going to basically vote for Kevin Mccarthy for speaker in a republican agenda. That will be run and that seems thats the messagE That seems to be. For democrats. In the midterms. Yes. I think the problem is going to bE That for republicans, their own base will vote in these primaries. And you will seE Trump weigh in on some of these primaries. And frankly the best thing that we as democrats can hope for, is that they just outdo themselves ongoing to the right. Not even to the, right the rate seems likE Theres an actual direction in. Place but there is not. Theres not an actual position. That theyrE Taking. Except exactly are saying before. I think we really havE To hope for, but we Cant Count on. Is that republicans, are going to nominate, really wacky candidates. In these Swing Districts. And then we still havE To havE The organization in place in the infrastructurE To turn out the vote with the same numbers that we saw in this recall where we got democrats out to vote. Where we got people out to vote in 2018, and took over the house in the first place. We are going to havE To seE That same kind of turnout, specifically in these Swing Districts, that are really really vulnerable. Because of the way the redistricting is going to play out. And especially gerrymandering in so many. States its a great point. That point about turnout is really interesting. That was a very high turnout election, which again you would not have necessarily banks on going into this. If you are looking at six weeks ago. Katie, stewart, thank you both, that was great. Okay, the Recall Effort was obviously a disaster for the republican party and trumpism. We will take a look at what the Blower Results mean in california, specifically for covid. Next, specifically for covid. Next are you one of the millions of americans who experience occasional bloating, gas or abdominal discomfort . Taking align every day can help. Usman said it started before any of the punitive reason it said they were doing this. Later the Recall Effort got on their way in february 2020. Before covid had taken halted. California people in the states havE The highest taxes in the. Nation the highest homelessness rate. A lowest Quality Life as the. Results continue in, he has imposed to impose Immigration Laws he or unilaterally rolled. He seeks to impose additional burdens on rationing our Water Use increasing taxes and restriction parental rights. Well thats not really a platform for your mainstream california voter. Once again what they have going, the push and pushing a, recall they shifted and they wanted to be a referendum on covid policy. Arguing the lockdowns werE To, strict that kid should have been backed in school in person, and it was newsoms fault that they werent. And of coursE There were infamously the pictures of Governor Newsom back in november, unmasked, at a fancy restaurant, with a lobbyist. Evidently ignoring his own lockdown protocols. Which were in Extremeing Lee bad. Look so republicans around the country saw this as winning issue. And what i agreed the issue of coronavirus and restrictions and how to best battle it is in my mind right now, with this Recall Election shows, us is that the state of california and its voters are in favor of the state covid policy. And republicans are on the wrong side of it. He is a Washington Post who wrote about this in his recent piece, a nuisance winning recovery sounded g offers a playbook for democrats in 2020. Two and he joins me now. Perry give me your thesis here on what the playbook is, and how it relates to covid. The idea is basically, in a democratic, running against trumpism has worked in 2018, worked in 2020 and sort of casting Larry Elder as a mini trump, seems an increasE Turnout. And one reason that you know thats playing a sort of negative card isnt ship, but right now that plays into covid to. In 2020, i think one reason that maybE Trump did not do as well as hE Thought he might, in the recent, polls is that 2020 was about lockdown, schools not being open. It was not about covid, but it was not an advantagE To democrats, 2021 right now is a mask, and vaccinations. Are you for masks . Are you for vaccinations . And that is a clear issue not only in california, in florida, in texas, and in a lot of our through state. The democratic pro mask, Pro Vaccine is popular right now. So if you can run against trumpism, but particularly trumpism is anti mask, anti vaccine. Its probably unlucky to be 2020, to exactly on thE Train of kind of running a trumpism, is a good approach. And that republicans are still opposed to basic Covid Mitigation protocols, that will be helpful for democrats. That is a really great, Point And Something wE Tried to see before, is that a year ago you really did havE These brutal tradeoffs. And particularly with kids in schooling, where yourE Telling businesses to shutter known. And yourE Telling kids to be on some school. Now thE Tradeoffs are, wearing a mask, and getting vaccinated. And the politics of that flipped. And i thought this polling was interesting. This is the Recall Exit Poll from nbc. It says, asking people if the covid19 policies, arE Too strict. Thats 30 . Not strict enough is 18 . And about right is about 47 . So you got about 65, to 30, if you add up not strict enough, and about right. That is a pretty big margin, and its about the margin of victory in the race. You know, biden is leaning on the idea, that the schools are going to stay. Open and i think as a public health matter, i might have some questions about that, but as a political matter, i think it was great for Gavin Newsom, that schools are open right now. BecausE That was an issue wherE The democrats were. A lot of those suburban, were probably losing some of the white college votes they really need. This recall is basically the same Election Results as 2018 it. Looks likE The Democrat Coalition is becoming more and insidE The cities, and i think becausE The issues of covid were pretty much all about health issues as opposed to school. That really helped here. And i think that is, where covid is not the issue in 2022, but if it is it looks like right now it will bE The science party, versus the antiscience. Party and i am following the virginia Governor Newsom, they are always terminal is running for the i am for vaccine, i am from mask, and isnt for it and the races are coming for this year the democrats earned the right Ear Yes that is an interesting point and that virginia race, and part of it too is, Larry Elder was not anti vaccine, right,. He wasnt going around saying that your Cousin Friend is going to have some awful swelling, and he needs to think about. That he was nominally sort of Pro Vaccine. Or i think he was vaccinated at one. Point but what democrats have realized, is that becausE The antivax basis is so strong in the republican party, they can kind of back republicans back into a corner on this issue. Because Republicans Cant be fully thrilled about it. They want to not even talk about it, or sort of be against mandates. But the overwhelming majority of people, have either taking the vaccine or supported. Yes that is a great, 0. 1 of the point is up the most adults, 65 are vaccinated. That is more popular than either parties. Correct. A lot of people are vaccinated, that is a big majority in america, and the second part, elder was not anti vaccine. But he was antipolicies to address covid. And i think youre seeing a lot of places as, well run the sanders has won the election in florida, and what hes doing in trying to stop the School Boards and taking away their pay, for having mask mandates, i think that that is not a star strategy. The polling is showing that that is not. Smart and i think in Florida Ron this defenders is taking a run where, it might be more competitive. That is a really really good, point and i think youre right about, that and the difference between the politics between 20 and 2020, is very insightful, thank you very much, thank you very much chris. Still the drastic steps that werE Taken to stopping trump from possibly launching a nuclear attack, and were only finding about it, now that is next. Ends wednesday. January this year. An infamous period of time anyways. Donald trump is, lost hes trying whatever he can disdain, powers been rejected by the courts, hes pressuring his Vice President s reviews certified results. Hes whipped up a mob and sent them trolling toward the capitol. None of it has worked. And then maybe hE Thinks, just crossings mind, maybe if i was a wartime president i could stay in power. At thE TimE There were contemporary nias reports he was actually looking to pick a fight with iran, according to a new book it seems people around trump were also concerned about that possibility. General Mark Milley the chairman of the chief joins of staff was reportedly worried about a potential war with china. So much so that general milley summoned the Pentagons War Room officials, and according to reporting in this new book, kuo said, without providing a reason, milley said he wanted to go over the procedures and processors for launching nuclear weapons. Only the president could givE That order, he said. But then he made clear that he, the chairman of the joint chiefs must be directly involved. Again, lets consider the context, here which is something we used to think about a lot during the cold war, and dont think about now, but its this still the same. As it stands right now, the president of the united states, that used to be Donald Trump, possesses the unilateral ability, to uninitiated nuclear conflict, that can kill billions of people. Thats just a plain fact. So imagine increasingly erratic president. That wants to stay in office. And wants to strike china or iran, a country with hundreds of nuclear weapons. It would all but lead is total catastrophe and untold loss of life. At one level, where republican which civilian control of the military is pretty important, Donald Trump was legitimately elected president. So he is the onE That decides. But on the other, hand should the Military Follow in order to start a war with china, in january of this year . Obviously not. So this apparently is how close we got. The Fact Refining about this months later in a book, is i think kind of ridiculous, its the kind of stuff that has to come out in public and under oath. This woman spent years chronicling Donald Trumps presidency for the Washington Post. The bestseller of i alone can fix, it about the final months of thE Trump administration. She joins me now. Carol, you have reported in and around this space, and i think you and other reporters have had sort of found positionally, similar posture by milley in those weeks, would you say, and whats your reaction to this story thats as it unfolds . Chris im so glad that youre focusing on it. It gives us more detail, it pulls back another layer of the onion. Of just how worried milley was. Remember, the most senior Military Officer in the country. The guy you havE To go through to get the president s advice, not the say so, but the guy who has to givE The President Advice and going to war. Legally required. This person was worried, that the president might do anything, and he was building many different elements, to prevent trump from doing something crazy. I think one of the most interesting things that comes out in my colleagues about Woodward And Bob costas book, is the idea that, milley was pretty convinced, that trump was in mental decline. Thats not a shock to me. In our book, i alone can fix. It we were hearing that Mark Meadows was telling people, including milley, the president is in a bad way. After the election. That the president was not losing it exactly, but so unhinged. So i think this just provides more detail, about what we knew about milley, and how worried, really worried he was about what could happen in the country. In Donald Trumps hands. Theres some precedent here, this is a legendary episode, which we only found out again afterwards, in 1974, which was slush injure, they referencE This in the book, Pulling Us Jury was what milley needed to contain, trump and maintain thE Tightest possible control in the lines of military communication command authority. He references an edict by to military leaders in august 1970. For not to follow orders that came directly from president nixon, whos facing impeachment, or the White House, without first checking with him in his joint chiefs of staff. This does not seem quite as defiant is that, but its all pretty constitutional troubling, and problematic, not that i necessarily wouldve done something differently, but this is not great waters to be in. Now, if yourE The chairman, you are a political officer. Your duty is to the constitution, and not to the president. Youre not a political operator, youre not supposed to get in the way of civilian control of the pentagon, but again legally Muellers Role is, i give my best military advicE To the president , and honestly, any order to deploy the military, has to at least be flags to him. So that he can tell the president oh this is a bad idea, and indeed, what we reported in our book, was that milley had conversations with the other chairs, the other joint chiefs. Army, navy, air force. Talking about how they would, as you brought up earlier in the segment, how they would block an order that they thought would endanger the country. They were worried about a lot of things, china is onE That werE Talking about now, but they were worried about a war with iran, they were also worried about a Cookie Plot that they kept hearing from the way, house about some of trumps allies encouraging him to pull out of afghanistan overnight, lake in one day, which would have been far more chaos than weve seen thus far. Far morE Terrifying, and far more loss of lives, but all thosE Things were worrisomE To them, and with the chairman and the rest of the joint chiefs start talking, about was a little mini plot, lets just each of us seriously resign, if we get this kind of order, that shows our bones, that wE Think is going to put the country in danger. And lets just slow the president down. From doing what wE Think is such a perilous choice. The resigning is obviously perfectly constitutional and legitimate, the point you makE There about reminding everyonE That he legally has to advise, is also perfectly, it fits with his constitutional duties. Its not him going rogue, although theres been some sort of statements to that today, the president giving his seal of approval to milley, but at some point, all this stuff has to be not in a book, but under oath and in the public i think. What do you think . Oh im with you. Im a reporter, i want more detail, rucker and, i my great colleague in partner, we have felt pretty shocked when we were learning thesE Things, from the reporting of a book. We were stunned that as reporters we learned this when we are reporting for the post we were shocked. Id likE To know. More full accounting. Carol, thank you so much i appreciate it. That is all in on this wednesday, night this Rachel Maddow shows right. Now good evening. Rachel good evening chris my friends. Much appreciate. Thanks to a home for joining us this. Our really happy to have you. Here we start tonight with some breaking news, just in the last few minutes. Line forsman authorities in washington d. C. , have started putting up a ring of protective fencing, around the u. S. Capitol. Again. This is, as you recall, quite similar to the fencing that went up around the Capitol Complex after the January 6th attack on the capital. The Capitol Complex around the January 6th attack on the Capitol By Trump supporters seeking to overturn the results of the president ial election. The fencing initially went up very quickly after the attack. Its ended up staying up until july. That fence was unsettling for a lot of people. It was just a profound change in what the seat of government looks like for one, and what it feels likE To be in washington, d. C. Its fair to say there was relief when the fencing finally came down in july, but as of right now, as of just this hour, these are live images were seeing here, its going back up. Nobody expect this t
