Sir richard branson. They went to the very lowest part of what is considered space where they were briefly weightless for a few minutes and then they returned which, you know, thats cool. This is not that though. This is actually a genuine honest to god actual space mission. Spacex rocket is going to launch four amateur astronauts although one does include a billionaire. Dont you worry, were getting another billionaire into space. Theyre going to go into orbit 360 miles above earth. The crew is composed entirely of civilians. There is a billionaire who funded the trip, a Physicians Assistant from Saint Jude Research center, Data Engineer and geo science professor. Got a very cool second chance. Those dont usually happen. What were going to witness basically is the closest thing that weve ever seen here in the u. S. At least to the kind of dream that we were sold as children, right . The futuristic dream of Space Travel available to normal people, nontrained astronauts, people being able to get on a rocket ship, engage in Space Travel. For the first time Cal Perry joins me live. Hes standing by to watch launch. Cal, what are we going to see here . Reporter chris, this rocket is going to take them 17,500 miles an hour where it will detach on a Drone Ship. A second rocket will push them into orbit. They should be Orbiting Earth 15 times a day in the next three days. Truly historic moment, chris. I think were going to get very close right now. I think theyre about to take off. Stand by. Were getting pretty close to launch time. I think we should listen in to the spacex live stream. [ cheers and applause ] delta. Delta. Prepare for launch, spacex. 30 seconds. Punch it, spacex. T Minus 15 seconds. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Ignition. Liftoff. Inspiration 4. Company one alpha. Switching down range. T Plus 30 seconds. Nominal. Historic mission flying Inspiration 4 crew. Crew in the capsule. Into the throttle down. The throttle bucket. Throttle down in preparation. Maximal dynamic pressure. The flight. Going supersonic. Stage one throttle up. Were through the period of maximum dynamic pressure. No problem. Copy. Back up and one bravo the call out from space. Thats one of the abort sequences. That is a nominal call. Everything continues to be good. Looks like a smooth ride for the crew. We are beginning to get the second Stage Engine for ignition. Passing through 3gs acceleration. Everything continues to look normal. Throttling down for g limiting. 4gs. Were holding it there for the crew. Major event coming up will be main Engine Cut off followed by stage separation. Looking at the second Stage Engine nozzle and then ignition of the second stage. And mico. [ cheers and applause ] you can see on the righthand side that the second stage has ignited. Im sure the crew felt another kick in the gs there as it ignited. Officially the Inspiration 4 crew are now on their way to space. On the Lefthand Side of your screen is making its way back down to earth. The Grid Fins have popped out to assist with the steering. Its parked out and holding position in the atlantic ocean. So we have a couple of views on screen. Signal, bermuda. As kate mentioned, Lefthand Side is The View from the top of the first stage looking down separated from the first stage. Making its way back to the earth. Velocity trajectory nominal. Is being tracked on the bottom Lefthand Side of your screen. The second stage on the opposite end of that engine is the second stage and the crew which sits on top of the second stage. Everything looks to be going normally with them and you can also track the Velocity On The Second Stage on the bottom righthand side of the screen. We have awesome views of the crew inside of the capsule as well. All right. So that all Civilian Crew appears to be in space basically. It took them about 2 40 to get there. Cal, i think youre still there. So far so good. I dont really understand what i just saw. Can you explain what i just saw . I will certainly do my best. So this is a twoStage Rocket. What that means basically is the bottom bit of the rocket fires first. That gets them almost all the way through that orbit, right . That gives them the power, 17,500 miles an hour to get past where branson went, where bezos went. No offense there, thats the reality of what were talking about. The second Stage Rocket which can be fired multiple times is going to carry them to their orbit of 357 miems around the earth. What makes spacex different is they reused the rocket. The rocket that carried the four civilians into space has already been used twice. Its put two military satellites into space already. I am watching it return to earth, which is completely wild. It looks like an Upside Down Flashlight in the sky. I can see it returning to what will be a Drone Ship out to sea. The other thing they reuse is the capsule the four astronauts are riding in. This capsule has been to the international space station. Right now spacex is the only way on or off. They are the main contractor for nasa. That is why we are here at cape canaveral. Nobody tows it better than they do. They are showing it with what is an automated system, chris. In theory, the way this is going to work, you and i can get on this rocket with no training and not have to press any buttons, go 357 miles above earth, rotate, go 15 times around earth, come back down, splash down in the atlantic and they control everything from california. Thats the technology were watching right now. Thats a no for me, dawg. I would root you on, cal, to do that. Pass. From an engine theres something intriguing theoretically. From an engineering perspective, so the problem, right, to getting to something like routine civilian Space Flight exploration, that spacex has been trying solve, is that rocket issue, right . The cost issue. One of them is reusing the rockets. The first rocket fell away. The old model, The One nasa uses, they dont use them. Spacex took a lot of Trial And Error to get to the point where they can reuse them. That thing is coming back and is going to land on a you said a Drone Ship. What is that . Its an automated ship thats floating off the coast of florida somewhere in the atlantic. It is not controlled on site. The ship is controlled somewhere from, again, california, hawthorne, california is where spacex bases its operations. That was the game changer. In your intro what makes this different is that its spacex. They can reland these rockets saving tens of millions of dollars. To give you an idea how difficult this is. They first did it a decade ago and no one has done it since. Theyre the only company that has done it. I think were actually watching it now come back down. Yeah, i think just so that im clear, The View on the left as we take spacexs Proprietary Feed here, is that am i looking down the barrel of that Booster Rocket which is oh, now no longer in view. There it is. I think i think it may have just touched down. Well get confirmation of that, but i think if the rockets went off, it may be down. Well get confirmation on that. The one on the right, thats definitely the second Booster Rocket. They can fire it multiple times if they need to. Sort of what we were talking about, it is the reusing of these materials to make it cheaper hopefully to open the door to this quote, up quote, space tourism. Theyre trying to get four civilians onto the international space station. Theyre trying to take some of the specialty out of this. Theyre trying to open it up to everybody. A little skeptical thats going to happen but lets listen for a second to their to their control room. Event called second Engine Cutoff and then well wait for the confirmation of good orbit. At the same time, the first stage will be beginning its landing burn. Here we have the ivac, we just saw it shut off its engine. [ cheers and applause ] all right. Nominal orbit insertion. You have come before and many are about to follow. The door is opening now. Its pretty incredible. Stage one landing is complete. Success. [ cheers and applause ] we just heard from jared thanking everyone for making this mission possible. The Dragon Capsule and crew are in a nominal orbit. In a few minutes here well begin opening that excuse me, in a few minutes well separate from the second stage and shortly after that well begin opening that nose cone. At the same time, we landed our first stage on the Drone Ship, which is super exciting. Thats the second Stage Action Wasnt exciting enough. So theres that Mbac Engine like we mentioned before. It has already shut down. An event known as second Engine Cutoff and the crew are now cal, it sounds like the first booster landed successfully. Our Civilian Crew, look, happy and healthy as they are about to separate from the second booster and enter into actual space orbit. The folks at spacex who worked very hard are very happy their rocket has come back, their tens of millions of dollars of rocket has come back and then theyre just going to chill up there for three days in orbit . Yeah. Theyre going to run some experiments. These are all experiments designed to see if you and i could go to space. Designed to see if people who do not have the scientific training, mathematical, are not astronauts that we could get into the capsule. Two of these Crew Members werent trying to go to space. One won a lottery and the other person was called Out Of The Blue and said would you like to go to space. Thats what spacex is going for. Theyre trying to show people that this can be done by ordinary citizens. I think you and i know there are a great many cost barriers that lie in the way. There are a number of other options. Spacex is trying to get into space tourism. The big picture is spacex is resupplying the i. S. S. They are surrounding the planet to give internet to everybody. Spacex has a much broader goal than space tourism. Elon musks stated goal is to make humans, humanity interplanetary space. They view this as a small step along the road. The cost, at least report tedly, Jared Isaacman is the billionaire who paid for this, which, again, Bucket List Sort of thing. When you run out of other things to spend money on. He reportedly paid 200 Million which is a lot of mope. Costs start out high and i guess they get lower over time although what exactly well do up there remains obscure to me. Cal perry, thank you so much for monitoring that for us. Im glad that worked out. I am, too. Thank you, chris. Before i go, one thing that does make this different, saint judes childrens research. They want to raise 200 Million. Theyre between 120 Million to 200 Million. Theyre taking a bunch of stuff to space to auction off for that purpose. Cal, thank you. Appreciate it. Up next we will begin All In with the decisive election results. Republicans got shellacked and what it means for trumpism next. Hey google. At this time Last Night when at last i was speaking with you we were awaiting the results of the Recall Vote of Governor Gavin Newsom. There was real nervousness among democrats and democratic strategists. I think it was not entirely unjustified. The polls showed newsom was going to win the Recall Effort most likely but there was a healthy dose of historically based apprehension in the air because of what happened the last time we had a first term democratic president In Office. I was there. I covered it. You probably remember it too. In barack obamas first year In Office we saw two seismic elections that harkened as Warning Signs of what was to come in american politics. Both of them were sort of the Precursor Or Part of the tea party movement, the right Wing Swing of the electorate that led to the 2010 mid terms, Redistricting And Backlash politics that went on to shape the current republican party. The first of the Big Bombshell Elections was in the very blue state of new jersey. Barack obama won that state by more than 15 points. The very next year, 10 months into the obama election, Republican Chris Christie prevailed and at the time a lot of people saw that as a direct blow to obama. New jersey voters elected a republican governor, chris christie. Some gop members say the results show voters are fed up with the obama administration agenda. This was not a referendum on the president and his policies. The tough economy made this election difficult. Probably some truth in both of those interpretations but the even greater blow to democrats came that next january and that came with a Special Election for ted kennedys election seat. Now this was massachusetts, right . A state similar to california in how dominated by the democratic party it is. The perception that its an enduring democratic stronghold. Ted kennedy was the Latz Living Cyan of those brothers. It made republican scott browns win even more earth shattering. A development that may affect this nations foreign policy, health care policy, perhaps the remainder of the obama presidency. Chuck, hard to believe it happens on The One year anniversary. In Washington Today for the president she stood for a symbol of voter anger. Scott brown winning ted kennedys liberal Massachusetts Senate Seat was seen as a Refr Dumb on president obamas agenda. Now its ten years later. Partisanship has become more predictive in american politics, right . Especially as americans become more and more polarized and nothing is preordained. Crazy things happen. Opinions change. Theres a very well known model that manage a Public Opinion, doing too much, spending, activism, turn it down. Theyre moving in opposition to the party controlling the White House. We saw this happen in Ba Ram obamas term. We saw it happen to donald trump. And because this is a reliable thing, people like fdr, lbj, some of this happened with Joe Biden but if we follow the historical depression, and as the first big test of The Enduring effects of trump i mean without trump on the ballot, the results arent even close. Thermostatic Public Opinion its called in public science. The fact were 18 months into a pandemic we hoped would be left behind, i personally as i was reading the Tea Leaves was fully prepared for a less decisive outcome. It seemed newsom would prevail in the recall. He would not be recalled. It wouldnt be surprising if he won by 10 or 12 points. It turned out to be resounding whopping. They were destroyed, repudiated, humiliated. As results currently stand, folks said Governor Newsom should not be removed by a margin of 27 points. That is with 70 of the vote in. We think the margin may narrow a bit based on who voted when. The benchmark is Gavin Newsoms margin. To go through the first 2 1 2 years of your administration, by the way during a once in a Century Pandemic and a huge recession and to have lost no support is basically what we saw happen in 2009. Gavin newsoms results, a referendum on biden, it is very good for democrats. If it was a referendum. This election was about a lot of things. Covid Safety And Recori huge issues. Democrats led into that. Former senator barack obama. Governor newsom has spent the past year and a half. Now republicans are treeg to return him. Your vote could be the difference between protecting our kids or make a difference. Helping us recover or taking us backwards. Theres a 30 second ad. He wants you to vote on covid restrictions. In fact, newsom himself referenced the danger that often the Campaign Trail and again Last Night. I think about just in the last few days and the former president put out saying this election was rigged. Democracy is not a football. You dont three it around. Its more like a, i dont know, you can drop it, smash it into A Million different pieces and thats what were capable of doing if we dont stand up to meet the moment and push back. Somewhat tempted to recall that metaphor, but ultimately this election is about the nature of the republican party right now, i think. How it cannot reach certain portions of americans. My very famous dog on twitter, southpaw, pointed out the only reason republicans went for a recall is because it gave them a flute. They had better uses for their money but for california republicans who are mostly hopeless in elections, utterly shut out of government looks pretty good. Thats what happened here. Republicans put up several and Kevin Falconer is the most reasonable. He describes himself as pro choice. That sounds like a potentially attractive candidate. How did he do . Well, not well. He did not even get 10 of the vote. He came in third among the candidates trying to replace Governor Newsom with just 8. 6 . Heres the problem. The republicans who came out to vote dont want someone like Kevin Faulconer who has governed. No, no, no, no, no. Thats not who they want. They want Larry Elder with 46. 8 of the vote. Thats the problem, republican Party Base wants a right Wing Radio Host po opposes minimum wage, no government experience. They want him to run the government. Californians dont want that by any means. Thats the state of the party right now. Thats the dilemma they face. She supports women in politics, the author of she will rise. And Stewart Stevens is a veteran of five republican president Ial Cam pains. He happened to work chris christies gubernatorial 2002 race. Stewart, im going to start with you as someone whos running a lot of races. One thing is theres who wins and loses. If you are trying to look at trends, there are losses that are good losses. If things swing eight points, you can say, hey, we made ground. Jon ossoffs first election down in georgia, he didnt win but clearly there was movement. I dont think you can find a single result for this party, you know . It wasnt that long ago where california was the Beating Heart of the republican party. It was the ideological heart. It was the electoral college sentinel. Independents knock it down to third place. Departing doesnt have any role in major decisions how to govern california. You do crazy stuff like this. Its really a classic race about neoism. There was nothing this race was about except, what, newsom had done too much to protect the citizens of california . So sort of like a referendum on death . Im glad death lost. What does that say about the party. There are no idfs that once prided itself on the fact of no ideas. No ideas at all. Katie, you won a Swing District. 25th District and your successor is a republican. Joe biden carried the district and Mike Garcia who voted against seating the electors, nothing you did in congress. What does that say to you about the politics of this, about the politics of a moment in a district that is a Swing District . I mean, i think what it really shows you is that the republican party is a lost cause in moderate areas that truly embrace this trump ideology, ideology of frankly insanity. Then thats not going to subseed in areas where people are most reasonable. What i fear and what happened with Mike Garcia, he did not run as a crazy person. That is not the way voters were turned on to him in the first place. I think we really are going to have to watch this going into the mid terms. The things that will kill republicans is they have their own odds. If their base continues to try to put forward people that are lunatics, then it wont be successful. It matters whether they can Jerry Manneder and redistrict into play. Lets choose it, then its not going to work. The Elder Faulconer with the republican section. If you are to draw up a plausible resume. Conjure over pictures. He sort of matches but there is just zero desire for that dude in the republican base, none whatsoever. If Theres None there, you cant actually get people like that elected to important positions. Yeah. Look, the republican party is not about governing. It has a difference. Its a party that exists to elect republicans. For the sake of power for powers sake. I worked in this party for 30 years center right. If you held a gun to my head and say, what does it mean to be a conservative in the u. S. Today, id say shoot me. The position now of the republican party is we dont live in a democracy. Just wrap your mind around that. That hasnt happened since 1860. You said the path forward to republicans in those districts like ca 25 and others, right, is to basically run Kevin Falconer join us. To run from Front Line and are amenable to the district and will vote for Kevin Mccarthy that will be run by The Bb before off ssert. I think the problem is their own base is going to vote in these primaries. Frankly, the best sing this we as democrats can hope for is they just outdue themselves to the beverage. Theres not that theyre taking except for exactly what youre saying before. So i think what we have to hope for is republicans will nominate whacky people in the districts. We need to turn out the vote in the same recall event fashion. We got people out to vote in 2018. Well have to see the same turnout in the Swing Disis strikts due to the Way Gerrymandering is involved in. It was a high Turnout Election which, again, you wouldnt have necessarily banked on going into this. Katie hill, Stewart Stevens whose book it was all lies out in paper back. Thanks. The Recall Effort was a disaster for the politics of covid specifically next. I was there. Be right back. But my symptoms were keeping me from where i needed to be. So i talked to my doctor and learned humira is the 1 prescribed biologic for people with uc or crohns disease. And humira helps people achieve remission that can last, so you can experience few or no symptoms. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections. Serious and sometimes fatal infections, including tuberculosis, and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Be there for you and them. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. Learn more about the condition at factsonhand. Com the Dirty Little Secret about the effort to recall california democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is that it started before any of the putative reasons they said they were doing it, at least later. The Recall Effort got underway in February Of 2020 before covid had taken hold in california. The petition reads people in this state suffer the highest taxes in the nation, the highest Homelessness Rate and the lowest quality of life as a result. He has imposed sanctuary state status. He unilaterally overruled the people in imposing the death penalty. He rations our water use, increasing taxes and restricting parental rights. Well, thats not really a platform for your mainstream california voter. Once it got going they shifted and wanted it to thin be a referendum on Covid Policy arguing the lockdowns are too strict, kids should be back in school in person and it was newsoms fault. There were the pictures of Governor Newsom at a fancy restaurant with a lobbyist evidently ignoring his own Lockdown Protocols which was an exceedingly bad look. Republicans saw this as a winning issue. While i agree, the issue of coronavirus and restrictions and how to best battle it is top of mind, what this Recall Election shows us is the state of california and the voters are in favor of the states covid policies and republicans are on the wrong side of it. Larry bacon is a Column Nist with the washington post. Newsoms winning Recall Strategy offers a Play Boom for democrats in 2022. Barry, give me your thesis here and how it relates to covid. The idea is particularly running against trumpism has worked in 2018, worked in 2020 and casting Larry Elder as a mini trump seems to have increased turnout. Thats playing into the negative partisanship dynamics. That plays into covid too. In 2020 i think one Reason Trump did not do as poorly as i thought he might, 2021 was about lockdowns, school not being opened. That was covid but it was not necessarily advantage democrats. 2021 right now is masks and vaccinations. Are you for masks . Right. Thats a clear issue where not only in california, florida, texas, a lot of other states democratic pro mask, pro Vaccine Position is popular. If you can run against trumpism particularly if its antimask, antivaccines, its unlikely to be 2022 exactly on the terrain. Running on antitrumpism is a good approach and if republicans are still opposed to basic Covid Mitigation protocols, that will be helpful to democrats. Thats a really great Point And Something we tried to say before. A year ago you did have these brutal tradeoffs particularly with kids and schooling where, you know, youre telling businesses to shutter down and youre telling kids to be on zoom school. The tradeoffs are wearing a mask and getting vaccinated and the politics of that, i mean, flip. I thought this polling was interesting. This is the Recall Exit Poll from nbc. It says asking people if the covid19 policies are too strict, thats 30 . Not strict enough is 18 , which is interesting. About right is 47 . You get 65 to 30 basically if you add up not strict enough and about right, thats a pretty big margin and its about the margin of victory in the race. You know, biden has leaned into the idea that schools are going to stay open. I think as a public health matter, i might have some questions about that. As a political matter, i think it was great for Gavin Newsom that schools are open right now. That was where the democrats were, a lot of those suburban districts, some of them were losing the white college votes. This is the same results as 2018. They are talking about suburbanites. Because the issues of covid were about health issues as opposed to school, that really helped here. I think covids probably not an issue in 2022, but if it is, it looks like right now it will be the Science Party versus the antiScience Party. Im following the virginias governor race. Terry mccull live said im for vaccines, im for masks. The democrats are in the right place on covid. Thats an interesting point. That virginia race, part of it, too, is Larry Elder wasnt antivaccine, right . He wasnt going around saying, you know, its going to, you know your Cousins Friend is going to have some awful swelling and you need to think about that. He was nominally pro vaccine. What democrats have realized is pause that antivax base is so strong, they can kind of back republicans into a corner on this because Republicans Cant be full throated about it, right . They want to not even talk about it or sort of be against mandates. The overwhelming majority have taken it or support it. Thats a great point. Most adults, 75 , are vaccinated. Thats more popular than either party is. Right. Correct. If you think about it the right way. Thats a big majority in america and the second part is. He was not antivaccines but he was antipolicies to address covid. A lot of, lot of places as well. Ron desantis has won an election but what hes doing in trying to have a strategy. The polling is showing thats not smart. I think in florida Ron Desantis is making a race saying he is the favorite. I think youre right about that. Still ahead, the drastic steps taken to possibly stop trump from a nuclear attack . And why were only finding out about it right now in a book. Thats next. Let it go huh, huh Let It Go word, word, 88 Let It Go Let It Go you and others have sort of found owe six Al Poster by milley in thoeks weeks, would you say . Whats your reaction to this story . It pulse back another layer of the onion how worried milley was. Remember, the most senior Military Officer in the country, the guy you have to go through to get the president s advice, not the say so, but give the President Advice on going to war. Legally required. This person was worried the president might do anything and he was building a bulwark. Many different elements of a bulwark to prevent trump from doing something crazy. One of the most tlg things that comes out in the book is the idea that milley was convinced that trump was in mental decline. Thats not a shock because i learned Mark Meadows was telling people the president is in a bad way after the election, that the president was not losing it exactly, but so unhinge ltd. This i think this provides more details about what we knew about worried about milley and how worried he was what could happen to the country in donald trumps Hands Thrjs is a legendary episode which we only found out afterwards in 1974, which sass schlessinger. It was what he needed to maintain the tightest possible control of the lines of military Communication And Command authority. The move is referenced to Jace Shes Jer not to follow orders that came from nixon facing impeachment. This doesnt see quite as defiant, but constitutionally trouble and problematic, not that i would have done something differently. This is not great waters to be in. No. I mean, if you are the chairman, you are a political officer, your duty is to the constitution and not the president. You are not a political operator. You are not supposed to get in the way of civilian control of the pentagon. Again, legally, Milleys Role is i give my best advice to the president. Honestly, any order to deploy the military has to at least be flagged to him so that he can tell the president . A bad idea, and indeed what we reported in our book was that milley had had conversations with the other joint cleefs, army, navy, air force, talking about how they would block an order they thought would endanger the country. They were worried about a lot of things. China. A war with iran. Also a plot they kept hearing from the White House about some of trumps allies encouraging him to pull out of afghanistan overnight, like one day, which would have been far more chaos than we have seen thus far. Far more terrifying and far more loss of lives. All those things were worrisome to them. And what they started talking about as was a mini plot. Lets resign if we get this order that chills our bones, that we think will put the country in danger, and lets slow the president down from doing what we think is such a perilous choice. Thats interesting. The serially resigning is perfectly constitutional and legitimate. The point about reminding everyone he has to legally advise is perfectly, you know, it fits with his constitutional duties, right . This is not him going rogue, even though there has been some sort of statements to that today. The president giving his seal of approval to milley.
