So high. Californias gubernatorial Recall Election is in the final stretch with voters heading to the polls tomorrow. Can Governor Gavin Newsom Hang On to his job . Well be following that. Were going to begin with the bid for Tennis History that came up just short last night at the u. S. Open. There it is. Medvedev makes his own history. Wow. Topranked Novak Jovic failed to complete the Grand Slam falling in straight sets to medvedev in yesterdays u. S. Open finals. Med very desk denied djokovic what would have been the first calendar Grand Slam since 1969. Djokovic remains tied with nadal with 20 career majors. Lets bring in right now veteran Sports Columnist mike. Everybody was there to see history being made. Djokovic get his 21st Career Grand Slam. Really from the beginning, this is to take nothing away from medvedev, nothing to take i can say his name perfectly by the way, nothing to take anything away from him, but it was almost like djokovic didnt have like a boxer that didnt have his legs underneath him the entire fight, in this case the entire match. He just was he looked exhausted out there from the beginning. You know, joe, it reminded me of a match 20 years ago when hewitt did that to Pete Sampras where from the jump you had to trust your eyes. Youre right, djokovic looked a step slow and medvedev looked faster and better from the start. You know, its so funny, i wrote a column in yesterdays Daily News you can finally cheer Novak Djokovic, i dont think he wanted to be cheered like this, by getting thrown down by medvedev. Theres an old Tennis Expression that covers this, its why they put the net up. We expected one kind of great Story Yesterday and then we got a completely kind of different story. Its like we did with those two wonderful Young Women who played the day before. This was in so many ways one of the most wonderful and surprising opens i have ever seen all the way back to Forest Hills and theres still nothing more thrilling than seeing somebody yeah. Play a match of his life on when hes got to play the match of his life. One of the toughest places that it really seems to better encapsulate those words. Sinatra saying so well, if i can make it here, i can make it anywhere. Yet you have djokovic who had never really made it into the fans hearts at the u. S. Open. It seemed yesterday look he finally had. Of course it was a defeat, but i actually thought i actually thought his show of emotion at The End was sincere, not being too cynical here, but it was sincere, moved by the fact that for the first time, as he stood up there accepting the second place trophy, the people of New York really took him into their hearts. You know, its funny, i was thinking of a moment before New York turned in Jimmy Connors favor way back in the day he got in front of a microphone and said you may not like me, but i like you. Thats what we saw yesterday. That emotion from novak was completely genuine. He has wanted to be loved. His games not as pretty as federers. Hes never had all of the drama of Rafa Nadal but he wanted to be loved and thats why i think it kind of saved him in The End from this disappointment. He talked about relief afterwards. He said that he was relieved that this journey was over. Ill tell you Something Else, if he had To Go back and do his summer all over again, i dont think he would go to the olympics and play in tokyo because i think he was already starting to be fried as well as he played at The Open, by the time he got to the big city. Yeah. Its exhausting takes a toll. Going to japan. Took a toll. Lets bring in jonathan hemire. Djokovic, like you and me, we just want to be loved. You were at the semifinals. Did he look exhausted . I was there Friday Night and i want to follow up with what mike said, the crowd was seemingly 50 50 at best for djokovic. Theres never been he never has sort of rallied the fans in New York at The Open behind him. I mean he sort of comes off as the villain at times. Federer is, of course, The Beloved, graceful champion and his waning days, nadal has the Energy And Excitement and has won at flushing a few times as well, and there wasnt a lot of enthusiasm, truthfully, for djokovic. People were there to watch history were he to win, but werent there to cheer on djokovic. That was a fivesetter, which may have taken his legs out from under him before sunday. That didnt end until late Friday Night pushing midnight and a quick turnaround to have to play a foe who sort of had his number and beaten him before. Yeah. You could really see how tired he was in the semis and how it wiped him out. Speaking of history, mika, saturdays womens final was just great. Two teenagers. Yeah. Another kind of beautiful End Result as these two Young Women made their own way into Tennis History. Mem Ma Raducanu completed her journey from qualifier to major champion winning in straight sets against Leila Fernandez in the unseeded all teen womens final. Teens. If you can believe it. These ladies are so young and yet so very impressive. Yeah. So impressive. Mike, they had such Grace And Presence afterwards. Talking about Each Other, talking about the day in which they were playing on September 11th, thinking first and foremost about the people of New York and those suffering 20 years later. It really was talk about putting a great face on womens tennis. Wow. These two are global ambassadors. You know, joe and mika and jonathan, weve had a lot of drama and a lot of sadness in sports lately and here came these two joyful, Young Women, to write as great a Tennis Story as i can ever remember. Think about it, 30 years ago coners thrills everybody by going to the semis of The Open at the age of 39, combined age of these two Young Women is 37, raducanu comes through the qualifying, so she already won nine matches before she gets to saturday. Im telling you, i have seen a lot of surprises in this sport through a long time. Never one that was more enjoyable to watch or bigger than this one than emma and leyla. Yeah. Really something. And ed, emma had Virginia Wade up in the stands watching her make history. Yeah. Shes the last brit to win the u. S. Open back in 1977, when i even younger than emMa Raducanu is now. Raducanus victory on the 20th Anniversary of September 11th, this 18yearold, whose dad is romanian, whose mother is chinese, born in canada, moved to london when she was 2, but is nevertheless, i think such a brilliant expression of what the multicultural side of britain. Quite apart from the just extraordinary phenomenon of who she is. She is the 21st Century Londoner and its a wonderful thing to see. Beautiful. Ed luce, stay with us. Mike lupica, thank you for coming on this morning. The latest in his famous Book Series is robert v. Parkers stones throw and a new Childrens Book Defending Champ about a girls versus Boys Soccer Game after the Girls Season, not the boys, is canceled for lack of funds. Check that one out too. I love it. Reflecting a little bit of reality as well. Mike lupica, thank you very much. To the news now, two major new studies by the centers for Disease Control and prevention highlight the power of covid19 vaccines amid the spread of the Delta Variant. The first report found people who are not fully vaccinated are 11 times more likely to die from covid19 compared to those who are. 11 times. 11 times as likely. That study looked at more than 600,000 Covid Cases from april through midjuly in 13 states. Another study looked at the effectiveness of two mrna vaccines, pfizer and moderna. That report found those vaccines were 87 effective in preventing hospitalizations and remained highly effective even during the spread of delta. Its numbers like that which are behind President Bidens push to get more of the country vaccinated. But there is growing political opposition to the Vaccine Mandates that the president announced last week. Nbc News Correspondent Morgan chesky has more on the more than dozen governors, all republicans, who are pushing back on those requirements. Reporter growing backlash over president Bidens Vaccine Mandate. At least 19 republican governors denouncing the rule, requiring businesses with at least 100 employees to make covid shots mandatory or offer weekly testing. The President S actions in a mandate harkens the resistance. Reporter Florida Governor Ron Desantis promising a fight. People should not be cast aside because they make a medical decision for themselves. Reporter President Biden calling opposition cavalier, adding all federal workers and contractors should be vaccinated within 75 days or face fines. The requirements for vaccination are part of a long tradition we have in this country of taking steps as a collective to keep people safe. Reporter fallout under way. In New York, the mandate forcing one hospital to turn away expected mothers after Staff Members quit. The number of resignations received leaves us no choice but to pause delivering babies at Lewis County general hospital. Reporter in north carolina, Business Owner Steven Bullock feels stuck. Its a fight every day. Reporter the Vaccination Rate of his 125 employees, about 40 . Now he fears some quitting to work somewhere smaller where the mandate doesnt apply. Have you found anything that is capable of changing Someones Mind at this point . Frankly, i have not. Folks are really dug in and it seems the harder you try, the further they go. Reporter yet major corporations in favor. Companies like amazon, Home Depot and walmart say they welcome the plan. The hope, drive down u. S. Covid cases as they start to plateau. Infections now down 10 from their peak during the latest wave driven by the Delta Variant. Doctors say there are three main reasons why. Increased use of masks indoors, a steady rise in Vaccination Rates and the virus burns through until theres No One Else to infect. Joining us New York times reporter covering health policy, her later report titled Gop Seethes At Biden mandate even at states requiring other vaccines. Thanks for being with us. I loved your article. Really good. It actually puts some details in. One of my chief complaints when i talk to friends, oh, my god, they want to vaccinate us and our children, this is unamerican its never happened before, and you go state by state, especially mississippi, alabama, these vaccineresistant governors in those states, where before covid, they were some of the most vaccinated states and they took pride in the fact that they had no exceptions at all. No religious exceptions, nothing. Go through the hypocrisy from the positions now compared to where they were before covid on vaccines. So every state in america has Vaccine Mandates and some of these republican states, you mentioned mississippi, joe, and alabama, have some of the strictest mandates in the country for childhood vaccines. These are longestablished mandates with no religious exemptions, no philosophical exemptions. Mississippi, which has one of the lowest Vaccine Rates for covid in the nation, has long had the highest Vaccine Rate for childhood vaccines and we know that childhood Vaccine Mandates work because we dont have measle outbreaks anymore, we dont have Polio Or Rubella outbreaks anymore. So these governors who are Fighting Biden are clearly not acknowledging their own policies. So heres Fox News Sunday Host Chris Wallace pressing republican Governor Pete ricketts of nebraska on why he opposes new Vaccine Mandates laid out by President Biden. It should be a personal Health Care choice. This is not something that the government should mandate and Somebody Shouldnt have to make the choice between keeping their Job And getting a jab in the arm. Its wrong. Ive talked to people, a number of people, who have told me if they made me take the vaccine im going to be fired. Im not going to do it. But you say its a personal choice. In fact, to attend school in your state of nebraska, children must be vaccinated against a number of diseases. Let me put them on the screen. They must be vaccinated against diphtheria, tenuous and per tus ses, Poll Yoshgs measles, mumps, row bela, Hepatitis B and chicken pox. Why are those mandates that parents in your state must comply with and do comply with routinely, why is it that theyre not so objectionable and such a violation of personal freedom but Bidens Vaccine Mandates are . Well, for all those you listed theres a long history parents have had the opportunity to see how those things have been implemented and theres still a lot of people out there who dont know what to trust. Its unbelievable. Mika, just absolutely unbelievable that you not only look at the governors and what theyve said in the past and what their policies are, you look at what people like Mike Pence have said in the past, that its a great danger to not get these vaccines. And cheryl, heres the deal. We have seen this one work. There is a bit of history to work with here. Theres a bit of reality to work with here. There are people who are alive because of the vaccine. There are people who are alive who have gotten Breakthrough Cases that arent so bad because of the vaccine. And im sorry to be to be coarse about this, but there are hundreds of thousands of people who are dead because they did not take the vaccine. The science is playing out before our eyes. Right. A couple of things about what the governor said. First of all in an Infectious Disease outbreak, getting vaccinated is not a personal choice. Its not. Its something that we do for the community and this has been long upheld with legal precedence. The governor complaining about Bidens Mandate he gave businesses an out. Their employees can opt for mandatory weekly testing. Third, he talked about theres a long history with those other vaccines. How do you think we got that long history . We got that long history because the vaccines were mandated. Some of those vaccines created pushback during when they were first mandated because people didnt know what to trust as the governor said, people were cautious, but in an Infectious Disease outbreak, your personal choice ends where my right not to get killed by an Infectious Disease begins. So we have these collective actions for the good of the community. Not the individual. Yeah. Youre so right. All these people that are talking about it, keep writing down from all these republican governors, they should make medical decisions for themselves. This is a personal choice. No. No. Its not been that way for 100 years when kids go to school. Heres a quote by the way, Ed Luce, from Mike Pence, a Politico Article from 2015, where they asked all the republican candidates running for president their position on Vaccine Mandates and im going to post it on my twitter feed, but heres Mike Pence, 2015, Indiana Law requires all children to be protected from vaccine preventable diseases like measles, by getting vaccinated. Vaccines protect all children from illnesses and our administration strongly urges hoosier families to have their children vaccinated. Ted cruz called the antivax movement silliness, said that every child should be vaccinated. You can go through the list. I just posted it right now on twitter. The hypocrisy is just stunning that republicans have decided that theyre going to make this a difficult Choice And Cause pushback by their own words. Yeah. The change here thats happened in the last few weeks is not that republicans have got worse. Theyve been bad on this really since biden became president. Its that biden has Got Steelier in his response to them. I think hes given up hope in the last few weeks theres going to be any reasonable conversation about vaccinations. You know, as cheryl pointed out, this isnt a Vaccine Mandate. A mandate is when you get no choice but to take a vaccine. I think there ought to be a Vaccine Mandate bought theres an alternative, people can test instead once a week. And continue To Go into Work Und Ossha regulations. He hasnt announced a Vaccine Passport that you see in most other western countries. He hasnt gone nearly as far as other western countries in the measure since last thursday. The Real Change, bidens Got Steelier, but i think that for him to get steelier still. There are other things he can do, which are perfectly within the law, the realm of reason and consistent with individual liberty and freedom. And he might have to. Joe, i think it was Matthew Miller who tweeted this angry Dad Routine is working for biden. Honestly, he values Human Life at this point, doing everything he can to get people to understand that you want to stay alive in this country and not get the virus. By the way, not let this Virus Turn into a delta which turns into a Monster Variant which then starts this all over again, but worse. Right. You know its not just about health. Weve said it A Million times. If you dont care about how your neighbor is, your childrens health, if youre too stupid to care about what your doctor says or science and just looking at Qanon Conspiracy theories or looking at facebook, wake up. Snap yourself out of it. Be selfish if thats what it takes. And know that your Small Business depends on it, your job depends on it, your community stays up, entrepreneurs have an economy where they can create businesses, grow jobs, and again, those jobs will mean you will be better off financially as well. So if you cant do it for the right reasons, you cant do it to protect your children and to protect your neighbors and to protect your communities and protect your friends that you go to church with or go to synagogue with, do it for your bottom line. Anyway, President Biden was asked on friday about Republican Critics who plan to challenge his new Vaccine Mandate in court and how he responded. Have at it. Look i am so disappointed that particularly some of the republican governors have been so cavalier with the health of these kids, so cavalier with the health of their communities. This is this is were playing for real here. This isnt a game. And i dont know of any scientist out there this field that doesnt think it makes considerable sense to do the six things ive suggested. You know, and some of these other governors are doing the freakout, which i think is fascinating, claiming its unconstitutional, how dare he move in this direction, because hes doing what about 60 , 70 of american support. I think its rich, especially now, when you look to the State Of Texas, and you see what republicans are doing in the State Of Texas and being supported by republicans all over the country, where theyre actually running over these specifically enumerated constitutional rights that have been in place for half a century of women in the State Of Texas. They dont care that theyre the 30 compared to the 70 who dont want roe v. Wade overturned. Theyre running over the 70 . And basically saying, go to hell. S to the 70 who actually support the constitutional whats been Written In The Constitution for half a century. Here, mika, theyre whining like little snowflakes for Joe Biden doing whats been done for the past 50 years on mandates for children going into school and theyre the 30 . Theyre the 35 . Maybe 40 in some polls. So i guess republicans think that when theyre the minority they get to run over everybody and when in the majority they get to run over everybody. Right now theyre in the minority on this and Joe Biden should just keep doing whats best for the country. You talk about politically, joe, the hand on the Hot Stove like dont put your hand on the Hot Stove, this could not be more of an example. Like the consequences are going to slap right back at these republicans in realtime if they continue to allow this virus to spread in their states. Jonathan hemere, the President Said have at it. What happens if they do . The President S frustration, you can see it, its close to the surface, mika. We heard this tone from him in the last handful of weeks and in particular, last handful of days, just real anger at the republican governors who are putting peoples lives in jeopardy, the president and his top advisors believe. They think they are on pretty solid footing legally but anticipate that there will be some challenges in the courts coming from these states, coming perhaps from private businesses, conservative owned private businesses in the weeks ahead. But this is they feel like this is the moment to do this, that theyve tried the incentive structure. Theyre offering money, a nudge, do positives for getting vaccines and now tried To Go the other way. Saying things it is time. You can potentially lose your job if you dont get this. Like this is something you need to do to protect yourself because youre endangering yourself and others and our collective economic recovery and they feel like this is, first and foremost, a Health Issue a political winner as well. That most americans support the idea of increased vaccines, increased the idea of mandates in many walks of life, and that they think the republicans are painting themselves into a corner where theyre seen as the party rejecting Public Health measures, rejecting economic recovery and putting peoples lives in jeopardy. This is a political fight as we start to look at 2022 and the midterms Coming Up. The democrats are willing to have. Cheryl, whats next for states like mississippi and South Carolina where the governor said he will go to The Gates Of Hell for Public Health officials who actually want to protect the children of South Carolina and the senior citizens of South Carolina . A bizarre thing To Go to The Gates Of Hell for, but thats what governor is going to do. What is next in terms of legal challenges . So the governor can try To Go to The Gates Of Hell, but in fact legal experts tell me that the president is in a pretty solid legal ground. He is citing the law that established osha, so you know that if you have a factory, lets say, where youre exposing people to toxic fumes and its going to kill them, osha can come in an give you a citation and give you a, you know, really severe violators they can take you to court. So the biden administration is making the same case, that this is a threat to Workplace Safety and thats the ground that this law or this mandate will be fought on. A lot of republican governors are screaming about its unconstitutional, its this or that. Its really a case of federal law and experts say biden has the authority in federal law to do exactly what he did. New york times reporter covering health policy, cheryl stolberg, thank you very much for coming on the show this morning. Joe mentioned what the republicans are doing in texas, joining us now, New York times Reporter And Msnbc national Security Analyst Michael Schmidt who had a very busy Weekend Reporting on two new pieces for the times including one entitled, behind the texas abortion law, a persevering conservative lawyer. But you know, its important as you look at Michael Schmidt and the picture, he didnt have such a busy weekend he didnt fret out how Room Rater was going to rate his background. Its one of the most exquisite is he in a lineup . One of the most exquisite backgrounds in Morning Joe. The doorknock to his left sets it up perfectly. Weve proven how shallow we are now. Why dont we let smart people talk, let you talk. The thing that shocks me, you talked about this conservative lawyer in a second, but the State Of Texas and the justices on the United States Supreme Court have allowed the State Of Texas to strip americans, specifically women, of a constitutional right that has been written into the constitution for 50 years over a procedural hangup and here we are, what, two weeks into it, how many days are we into it now, where this constitutional write has been stripped away from women in one of the largest states in the union . It really is remarkable that theres this this still hasnt been addressed. So given the what you were just saying and the importance and the significance of what has happened, we went back and looked at how did this happen . How was it that this bill came out of texas and why did it come out of texas . And how was it structured . And was it expressly written in a way to give the courts a very difficult time at stopping it . Was this a concerted effort to do that . Our reporting showed that that was true, that this legal mind, jonathan mitchell, a former scalia clerk, largely unknown person in many legal circles, someone who struggled to get a job in the trump administration, someone who struggled to get a job in academia, someone who spends an enormous time thinking about and reading about the law, came up with this device, this structure inside of this law, to make it more difficult for the courts to stop it. Not only had that happened in this bill and there had been this effort To Go into it, but that it had actually started as far back as 2013 when mitchell tried this in a different bill coming out of texas, when he was the Texas State Solicitor general, and that he had written into that bill what he thought was something that would bulletproof it and stop it from being gutted by the Supreme Court. Breyer in 2016 ruling on that, caught him, essentially, and said not so fast. Im not going to let that happen and gutted the bill. Mitchell vowed to himself at the time that if he ever got a shot again to have his hand in writing a bill, an abortion bill, To Go before the Supreme Court he would stop at nothing to make sure that it survived. That is where we find ourselves two weeks into this bill going into law. Ed luce, dont you find it remarkable that two weeks, for two weeks, in the State Of Texas, the constitutional right to have an abortion, which has been on the books, has been Written In The Constitution since 1973, has basically been null and void in one of the largest states in the union, again, based on a procedural loophole . I cant ever recall this Happening And I cant wait to hear the whining by the same people praising this bill when a state like california or a state like Washington State decides to ban Hand Guns unconstitutionally based on a procedural hangup. Like this is a horrific precedent and conservatives should be just aware of that as progressives. Yeah. Whatever you call it, the vigilante bill, the bounty hunter bill. This is rough justice that can be used in any number of different scenarios and its a danger to everybody of every ideology, including All Of Us who value having a rule of law. I think the 54 vote at the Supreme Court to allow this law To Go ahead for the time being is interesting because justice John Roberts was on the dissenting four and we have a really good example of even though we have a very conservative chief justice, its not enough to prevent a majority. The constitutionality of this bill in full some time in the coming weeks. Lets watch very closely to see what those other five do. Yeah. So before we let you go, Michael Schmidt, tell me about the 9 11 Reports Release and your story behind that . So the biden administration, like similar administrations before it, had been under pressure from the families of victims of September 11th to release more documents, more information, about connections between the saudi government and the high jackers. This has long been a longstanding question that the families and much of the public and journalists have had, one of the great unanswered questions of 9 11, is how much of a role did the saudis have in helping the highjackers and planning it . Late on September 11th, saturday night, about 12 hours after biden had been at ground zero, the fbi released a more than a Dozenpage Document that laid out that as recently as 2016, the bureau was still investigating the ties between the saudi government and the highjackers. It gets into details about contacts that some saudi consular officials had with the highjackers leading up to the attacks. And how they sort of aided them in terms of getting acquainted when they got into the united states and california. Now these details were interesting and helped illuminate what was going on. The documents were not smoking Gun Connection that showed the saudi government played a direct hand in the attacks. Some of the Family Members that spoke out after this said that they were very pleased that these documents came out and they expect for more documents to come out, and i think theres a feeling amongst sort of good government types and such, that the more the government discloses about it, the fuller picture that we have and the more that, you know, folks can make their own Determination And Sort of move on or not move on, but have a greater understanding. All right. Michael schmidt thank you so much. Thank you for coming with what has to be the most visually arresting scene ive seen on television. He looks adorable. Since i dont know, Julie Andrews in the Alps Sound of music. We appreciate him coming on the show. Dorothy walking through the field of poppies. It pops out at you. Thank you, mike schmidt. Despite all the noise surrounding president Bidens Vaccine Mandate for some businesses, some are actually welcoming it. Even in red states. In texas, where the governor has pushed back on any mandate, masks or vaccines, the Washington Post spoke with bob harvey, the ceo of the greater houston partnership. He represents employers from all over texas, including exxonmobil, chevron, jp morgan, wells fargo. He says companies have been talking for weeks about what to do to combat the surge in cases, especially in a state like texas, that has less than 60 of its residents fully vaccinated. The executives feel the President S mandate is exactly a relief to the business community, as they worried employees might quit if they required the vaccine, but now they can just point to the President S order without having to worry. The president has done the work for them, joe. Lets bring in right now, cnbcs brian sullivan. It does seem to me, whether youre a ceo, a Football Coach or a baptist preacher, you want people either working or sitting in the seats or sitting in the pews and healthy. And healthy without the spread of the virus. I mean, this seems, again, like the smart, economic move for these companies. By the way, in texas, guys, you can be all three of those things in just one person. Youre exactly right. I mean the companies i dont think mika nailed it as well the companies want cover. Rather than sort of Scarborough Corporation saying im going to order you to do to this to mikas point, the Scarborough Ceo can say, hey, its not my call, this is the president , the White House saying that this is what they want us to do. Now, this Word Mandate gets thrown around as far as whether or not its a legally binding order or whatever, but ceos, Number One, to your point, joe, they want their workers in the office, they want their workers working, they want their workers healthy and we not vaccines have worked. I dig into the data. Listen to your conversation earlier, indiana is actually one of the few states that provides data on Breakthrough Cases. The Breakthrough Case Fatality rate there are cases, we know that the Breakthrough Case Fatality rate for vaccinated individuals is 0. 005 . Wow. Any is so many, but the numbers are minute. The vaccines are working. The ceos know this. By the way, we have our first major Inperson Conference in New York city this week. Its a Wall Street Finance conference called s. A. L. T. That will take place at the javits center. Vaccination proof for a lot of conferences like businesses, guys. Yeah. Absolutely. And like you said, so much easier for the ceo To Go, listen, i would person will i i would let you do whatever you wanted to do, but my hands are tied. You have to get the vaccine. That way, you, again, dont have to worry about a spread of vaccines. I know, you know, the Boston Red sox, for example, may be small compared to walmart or some of these other corporations, but theres a lot of money on the line, middle of the season you get six, seven, eight, nine, ten players out because of covid, theres some antivaxxers, vaccine resistant people on the team, compare that to Ole Miss Football where youve got a Head Coach that got buyin from 100 of the players. One thing he doesnt have to worry about is having people off throughout the season because of covid. It makes a difference. Apply that to business, my gosh, your workforce, a healthy workforce is a productive workforce, is a profitable workforce. Thats why i dont understand why socalled small government conservatives are opposed to these mandates. Well, businesses arent going to lead the way. Universities as well. Thats a well taken point of view. A generation of people coming in the workforce that are in college and schools have said, williams, alabama, virginia tech, have largely said, you want to come back to school, you need to get vaccinated. Theyre going to make certain very rare exceptions, but overall they understand, you want this, you dont want to be on zoom all day, come back to the classroom, fine, this is whats going to have happen. You will have people coming out into the workforce that will understand the way this works as well. Are companies going to lose people . Yes they are. By the way, this mandate, this ask, whatever you want to call it from President Biden is for companies that are over 100 employees. You might have a Company Or Employer or worker that says i wont do it and, you know, ill get tested once a week. It doesnt work out. The Job Market, guys, is red hot. If that person doesnt want to work at a corporation thats big that requires it, theres probably a 45 Person Business somewhere that cant or dont or wont require it as well, that people will have they can make their own choice. There will be shuffling in the Job Market but the Job Market and the economy must go on. Lets be clear, covid is a national Health Crisis which also becomes an economic crisis as well. New York City school kids, theyre back in School Today for the first time, many of them, in a year, New York city theres a lot thats going to happen in the next few weeks and were rooting for the city as well. Brian was talking about colleges doing the right thing mentioned williams. Im going there this week. Go williams. Alabama. I know uva is doing it. Again, for those that would say this is the most radical thing, how in the world can you make poor students take vaccines or not go to class . Weve been doing it for every american for the last 50, 75 years. This will probably be about the eighth or ninth educational Vaccine Mandate these students have taken. Its only been the stupidity of the past several years where Conspiracy Theories have made smart people dumb and dumb people crazy that you suddenly have educated americans running around going, oh, my god, this has never happened before in the history of the country yes, it has. Its been the republicans who have traditionally supported Vaccine Mandates more than anybody else. Well this is also telling us a little bit, as we follow the biden presidency, a little bit about his leadership. I mean, it is sort of im not joking like the dad role, where he takes it on the chin, whether its afghanistan or mandates, hes doing it, have at it. Hes Moving On. And hes going to just do what he thinks is right and take all the criticism, take the blame. Whatever. But still, get that make The American people get that vaccine. Hes trying to save lives. And Coming Up, why its maybe far too soon for people to write off Joe Biden. Well read from Ed Luces new Klum On where the President Stands with The American public. Pay less for electric bills by moving to clean energy. And do it all by making the ultrawealthy pay their fair share of taxes. Itd be a win for the everyday american family. Open two years ago, 25yearold Daniel Medvedev reached type of The Mountain defeating the legendary Novak Djokovic in the mens final. It was incredible. Theres his wife, shes relieved. He becomes the third russian man because shes got an anniversary present. Of course wasnt going to get one. Yeah. He becomes the third russian man to win a Grand Slam singles title, and the second to claim a u. S. Open title and the newest u. S. Open champ, Dan Iil Medvedev jois us on the show and thank you for giving us some time. I want to ask about your anniversary, how did it go and did dasha like her gift . Definitely. Thats why i love my wife, because yesterday was im pleased i managed to give her that, because, again, that was only thing i had time to do yesterday. So im happy that i managed to pull this off. You know, two years ago, you lost at The Open, but we all took note. Mika and i took note, how you did it with such grace, and you were such a great sport about it. I thought yesterday was really moving. Djokovic obviously never has been a Fan Favorite in New York, but there was an outpouring of support for him, even losing, and you really tipped your hat to him. Said he was the greatest of alltime, and apologetic for stopping history but it was just a wonderful display. Talk about what it was like being up there, winning under such remarkable circumstances . Yeah. I mean, first of all, i grew up watching Roger Rauf Yall and novak and i can only learn from them and so far in the History Book and result books, but, yeah, the only thing i can do is learn from the way they handle the losses and the victories. Of course, again, im really sorry, because novak was on the on the edge of making something unbelievable in our sport. At the same time thats what tennis is about. There are two players, and every two want to win the match. So im really happy, also, of course, for myself, for stopping him from doing this. How surprising was it . Straight sets. Did you notice early on in the first set after you broke did you notice he might be a step off, or were you keeping him off balance with with where you were going with your serves . Yeah. When you play novak, as we saw to the last point. I had match points. I could have won a little easier the third set, until the match is over, you cannot think anything. Like, you just cant think that the match is done, or that hes done, because otherwise hes going to get into your mind. We saw the matches, crazy matches being done and when nobody believed in him. So, of course, youre in the match, i felt like i had some control. My tactics were working. He was missing a little bit more than usually, but i knew that until the last point is done, novak is never out. Tried to give him much as i could and finally a really tough, toughened of the match and just i was super relieved to finally get the last point. So tell us the truth here. Were you were you a little irritated . Because i was irritated for you. What . At an earlier Championship Point you were trying to serve and people in the crowd were shouting. It was really i thought really poor sportsmanship on their part, and it seemed like, youre like, ah. What am i going to do. You waited. They kept making noise. Yeah. So you just decided to sort of rush through that. What was going through your mind at that point . Definitely not easy, because, while it disturbs you from serving. So wont dough much more into detail whats you are thinking and what youre trying to do. As you said, disturbs from doing the serve. So i made two doubles on serve of the match, maybe i wasnt doing before and also the nerves was there. So altogether, so when i lost The Game 52. I thought at 54 i understand now its going to be even more. Feel that maybe this is where im vulnerable, this is where my weakness can be for anybodys weakness. I mean, when the whole stadium goes crazy before your serve, its not easy. So i knew i had to, as you say, just rush it and just focus on myself. Not focus on anything external, and just rush the serve. Try to serve without thinking about anything else. Definitely knew more straightaway, last game. Finally the last point i managed to hit the first serve, which i did, and thats what helped me to win. And finally, whats it mean as a russian . I think youre the third russian to win the u. S. Open. Whats it mean to be able to take back the u. S. Open championship to your Home Country . Yun believable, because its just when people continue to say that im the third russian to get a grass victory. But, of course, i play for myself also, but when whenever you get small messages either from your press or from people, you know from your coach that people in Russia Start to like tennis again, just because of you, just because of your results and what youre doing, it just i mean, i have huge respect for my country, and i really want to be an inspiration to future champions, just like i was inspired, because was a little yupger when i started playing tennis so i didnt see, but mark was a great Inspiration And Hope i can inspire future russian champions. A strong generation Coming Up. Yeah. You certainly are an inspiration for a lot of people. Not only in russia but across the world. I know a lot of younger Tennis Players saw what you did yesterday, and had to be inspired. A new generation of tennis champions. Youre the the first of your generation to crack that code of sort of three in the pantheon, so congratulations to you, and we thank you for being with us and also for winning and losing a few years ago with such grace and class. Yes. Beautiful. U. S. Open champion. Daniil medvedev. Thank you very much for being on. Thank you. All right. Lets bring in roger bennett. Roger, i dont know. Have you won any u. S. Opens . I dont think you have. No. But never been on television as your last guest, though, impressive, all considering. Yeah. He really was a again, all class. And just winning in straight sets, and even got through it when some of the Crowd Werent especially polite to him. He kept his head down and beat a guy he said was greatest of alltime. Hes a remarkable singular human being. He came on our show and said everybody thinks i look like Quentin Tarantino but im going to blow all my opponents away as if im Jules Winfield and did it yesterday and it was magnificent to see, joe. It was magnificent to see. Well, roger, we had quite a few good soccer games this past weekend, Premiere League games, and you talked about yesterday. This sort of quiet, humble, unsung hero, getting his euro pass, punching the ticket, taking a 16hour train ride, rumbling into manchester in the middle of the night. Just putting on an old borrowed kit and going out and scoring a couple of goals . A dream big game of the weekend. Manchester united against new castle. Referring to, joe, cristiano ronaldo, hope collides, in Human Form back after 12 years away. Going back to Cleveland Or Steve coming back to blues clues, like that, and took that pony just 47 minutes to find back of the net on the stroke of half time. Ah big moments, big players, big goals. This one, not the prettiest strike, but one which will be said to be from further and further away with every single telling. Look at him. Oh, it had to be him incredible restraint here, humanly to keep his shirt on to renaldo. Oh, every ounce of him wants to reveal his pecs to the world, but then hapless new castle, scored a script. And returning and peeing in the punch, but just as you know, nobody puts baby in the corner. Six minutes later. Who was it . Renaldo again. And speedy at 21. 2 miles an hour, and finishing washington general star goalkeeping. Man chestor united nostalgia dreams. What football is all about. Wrapping up points for this. Wolf blitzer, straight into the Situation Room from long distance. Without renaldo, not a spotlight To Go around. United the winners. Would have loved that return. Renaldo, almost as much as he loved his own reflection. In other games, defending manchester, another portuguese player, scoring a big goal. Defending champions, won this 10 and your favorite liverpool football club. Boston red sox owned, descended into the crazed back here that is leeds and Liverpool Poetry in motion and a finish from sala. Your egyptian king jared, fifth fastest in history. Four games into the season, top four of the richest four teams in football. So in football, money, money, money, its a rich mans world. Yeah, yeah. So let me ask you, roger. Can united win it all . Do they have what it takes to get past City Or Liverpool . They have what it takes, huge amounts of money. Ultimately fourhorse race between the richest teams. Manchester, liverpool i just say end the day, cheering for balanced sheets but god bless you with the u. S. Open. Tennis, its coming home. Yeah. Tennis is coming home. Roger bennett, thank you so much. Roger, thank you. Top of the hour, totally inappropriate time for him. Hes the author of the New York times no. Its perfect. Theres a book. Lets get to the news. Go to politics now. Joining the conversation we have from the just wont stop talking . You okay . Hes fine. We move on. Joining us now, we have the host of msnbcs Politics Nation and president of the national Action Network Reverend al sharpton. Former aide to the george w. Bush white House And State departments, good to have you on and on brand with Donny Deutsch and a. P. s Jonathan Linear and still with us, the New York times. Kick things off reading from eds latest piece entitled its far too soon for people to write off Joe Biden and ed writes in part this writing him off now is just as overwrought as reserving is premature slot on mount rushmore. The Turning Point came on the July 4th weekend. That was when biden failed to meet his target of inoculated 70 of americans against covid19. For all of its flaws, the Afghanistan Exit is still popular with the u. S. Public. Though the president has personally taken a hit over its handling. Biden should neither be written off as hopeless nor proclaimed as our ages savior. Like most President S, hes somewhere in between. And, ed, great timing here, for this column, of course, because right after the withdrawal from afghanistan and the first few calamitous days you heard people writing him off, suggesting this was the greatest failure in the postworld war. Here we are two, three weeks later. Taken out more afghans than what you know, than people who live in billings, montana, 125, 130,000 americans that want to come out for the most part, are being allowed out. Right now were being able to work with qatar to make sure if other americans want to get out, they can do that as well. This Afghanistan Withdrawal, which, again, ill say, i was against, but this Afghanistan Withdrawal, with 75 of americans supported looks a hell of a lot different today than it did three weeks ago. Yeah, like you, joe, i didnt support that, the withdrawal, but i never saw it as being a particular danger to bidens domestic standing. Not least because its broadly popular with The American public. Some of the pieces that ive seen in the commentary what ive seen in the last few weeks. Noticeably Bret Stephens in the times saying his presence is a failure. Weve seen people writing how delta is defeated by delta. It caused me to write this piece, but this is an absurd claim. Yes. Biden is it is, doing a reasonably good Job A pretty good job, in extremely difficult circumstances. He has the burden of expectations on him, but the other end of the spectrum, you know, we had a lot of people declaring hes the next fdr. You know, which i think is almost as equally absurd and puts way too much pressure on him to do things with a system that, you know, ultimately boils down to Joe Manchin and Kirsten Sinema certainly in the next few weeks. My Column Wack to remind people its not either one extreme or the other. Weve got a weddingtensioned, pretty competent president here doing his best in extremely difficult circumstances. Yeah. Jonathan lemire, it is i know. Weve talked about this offline before. It is actually so early in Joe Bidens presidency. Its hard to believe that were well over a year off until the next election. And every 15 minutes somebodys writing another piece about how many seats are going To Go for democrats or how many are going To Go for republicans, Joe Biden, a word in a Press Conference, really is absolute instanty. Especially when you look at whats happened over the past five years. So much ive got to believe so much really does depend on what happens in these negotiations, which took a really big turn over the weekend, when a certain congressman from South Carolina, named jim said, well, i dont know. Maybe it can be closer to 2. 5 trillion than 3. 5 trillion. I think we may see it coming together of the two sides around that number. Certainly Congressman Clyburn has a lot of sway with this White House, joe. Youre right to your broader point about the sort of rushed analysis where things are with this president. I think its useful sometimes to take a step back and recognize the challenges he inherited when he took office. At the height of the pandemic. The economy battered by the virus. Just two weeks after the January 6th insurrection, after a year of social and racial tumult, Joe Biden came into office with as many challenges on his plate as any President Since fdr. Therefore, that comparison, perhaps, is apt. And, of course, his White House aides point to the recovery that has been made. The economy, you know, still fits and sputters questions about it, certainly improved. The vaccine rollout. Not as well as they would have liked. Seen the President S frustration about that. Talked about that last hour, but certainly the vaccines are there. Were far ahead we were were back in january. Yes, questioned, of course, how the Afghanistan Withdrawal happened. Most americans, though, still support the decision for the u. S. To leave that country. The negotiations on Capitol Hill are crucial. The next few weeks. This timeline will likely slip boo oct, beyond where they wanted here. Agreement on the side of this reconciliation package. Joe manchin want add pause. Chuck schumer said no. Said, okay. Okay but the package has to shrink. Clyburn giving cover from the house side. Keep progressives happy. Wont be easy. End of the day, coming back to this, joe, talked about it offline. Which democrat will really be The One . All have a lot of say. House and senate alike. Margins are slim. Which democrat, handful of democrats will be The Ones to submarine the agenda of a president from their own party . Particularly one with those midterms Coming Up before we flow it . Seems unlikely that theyll actually tank it. Compromise, package will shrink, White House aides confident theyll get it done. Especially a president presiding over such a divided country making former President S george w. Bushs speech in shanksville, pennsylvania, on the 20th Anniversary of 9 11. Makes it key. Gave the Keynote Address and in the speech gave a powerful appeal for national unity, like what we saw after those attacks. As a nation our adjustments have been profound. Many americans struggled to understand why an enemy would hate us with such zeal. The security measures incorporated into our lives are both sources of comfort and reminders of our vulnerability. And we have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come not only across borders but from violence that gathers within. There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home. But nen theres disdain for Pluralism And Disregard for Human Life, and determination to defile national symbols. They are children of the same foul spirit, and it is our continuing duty to confront them. On Americas Day of Trial And Grief i saw millions of people instinctively grab for a Neighbors Hand and rally to the cause of one another. That is the america i know. [ applause ] at a time when religious bigotry might have flowed freely, i saw americans reject prejudice and embrace people of muslim faith. That is the nation i know. [ applause ] at a time when nativism could have stirred Hatred And Violence against people perceived as outsiders i saw americas reaform their welcome to immigrants and refugees. That is the nation i know. [ applause ] at a time when some viewed the rising generation at individualistic and decadent, i saw young people embrace an ethic of Service And Rise to selfless Action Nap is the nation i know. [ applause ] this is not mere nostalgia. Thitis the truest version of ourselves. It is what we have been and what we can be again. That is the america i know. Alise Jordan Words we needed to hear. Some are triggered whenever they hear george w. Bush talk. We dont need to catalog all the mistakes he made going into the Iraq War any more than the 13 Million lives he saved in africa. Well let historians sort that out, but on 9 11, those were the words so many people in george w. Bushs party needed to hear. That is the america that i know. Just like that was the america he tried to project after the attacks of 9 11 going to a mosque. Joe, it just it really was a comforting. See. My first job was in president Bushs Speech writing office as a junior researcher, and i know what care the president takes with his public remarks, and he has been very classy in the aftermath of his presidency not injecting himself into politics and trying to ride above and come forward when he comes forward and says something that is unifying. I think thats what we saw in the beautiful set of remarks that he gave, and he certainly landed a pretty big punch in the comparison of foreign terrorists to domestic terrorists, but it was a message that the country needed to hear, and a message of not tolerating whats happening in the republican party and the incitement of Base Instinct with political gain among too many gop politicians, and i just thought it was beautiful the way that the president reminded us that we have so much to be hopeful for and that we can be better than what we have been in recent days. And, donnie, speaking of what some of the republican party are doing right now, of course, we could talk about January 6th and the fact that you have most republicans trying to block a transparent investigation of january the 6th, and bipartisan, bicameral investigation, which really would have done so much to reveal what went wrong on that day, but you also have the response to Joe Biden talking about Vaccine Mandates, the type of mandates that you had growing up in brooklyn. The type of mandates that i had going to school in meridian, mississippi. Pensacola, florida. That all americans watching this show, if they grew up in america, had Vaccine Mandates before they were allowed To Go to kindergarten or first grade. And now you hear governors from states like mississippi screaming and howling and melting like a little snowflake about Vaccine Mandates when before covid, mississippi bragged about the fact that they had the toughest mandates and the highest Vaccine Numbers of just about any state with no exceptions. Not even religious exceptions. And now politics gets inserted into it, and suddenly they have amnesia. Yeah. Joe, you know, i think the republicans over the last three or four months, actually last seven, eight months, the big three. Whats Front And Center for what they stand for. You mentioned two of them in terms of getting in the way of the investigation of January 6th insurrection, getting in the way of keeping people healthy and, of course, we have texas. Basically getting in the way of womens freedoms to have an abortion, even if raped by their uncle after six weeks. Their two big things against biden, well, hes old and afghanistan. You point the out earlier, as we move week two, week three, week four and get to week 20 after afghanistan people wont vote whether we stayed or did not go there. You open up the segue, how the Biden Doing . When you look at economy and you look at Health Care and look at overall okayness of the country. Im going to call it, were okay right now. Biden is looking pretty good. Particularly our last president , compared to george w. Bush, on saturday night, called a Boxing Match with his Ed Auk son. Overall okayness with biden, i think democrats are in pretty decent shape. Good news for me, is i didnt even know Donald Trump went to a Boxing Match. And probably enjoyed my weekend more. So, rev, i have a theory of the case which may be wrong, because it was the same theory i had going into the election before Donald Trump got 75 Million votes, but im wondering if were focusing too much on the 25 , the 30 howling the loudest . I saw a poll showed a year ago 56 of americans considered themselves to be very angry about where things were going in this country. This year, that numbers down to 25 , 26 . Im wondering whether were obsessing over the third of americans who are Conspiracy Theorists or who are bitter and angry right now the election didnt go their way and almost letting them get in the way of the sort of progress that needs to be made in washington . The challenge is not to be overwhelmed by the 25 or 30 that are more noisy, and ignore the 70 , 75 that are under threat of the pandemic, of voting restrictions, of womens rights to choose, and i think the challenge that the biden administration as well as the democratic Congress And Senate must do is turn their attention to making sure that they do not neglect the Voting Rights of people that need to keep them in power. Neglect womens right, neglect protecting citizens of this country in covid19 by playing to a minority that is noisy and threatening and dramatic, but that will only become more powerful if the majority are neglected. I think that that is the challenge. They must remain focused on what theyre there for, and they must be focused on the concerns of the real majority of The American people who may not be storming the capitol building. They are The Ones, like us, march peacefully around it, but if theyre ignored you empower those that could have insurrections and do Boxing Matches rather than appeal for us to rise to the occasion that George Bush appealed to. To show you america can come together you actually have Me Commending George Bush for raising us up to a good level. Here we go. There you go. And i guess the good news, though, for President Trump as a Boxing Match is he didnt have to sit through rudy giulianis speech. Good lord. What happened there . Figuring out what was going on. All right. So lets get to Jonathan Lemire quickly. Jonathan, take us inside the White House. About nine months in. Almost nine months in, inside the White House. A few ups and downs. More ups than downs, if you just look at polls. Theyre in a bit of a swim right now. What is the mindset inside the White House . Are they defiant . Are they nervous . What do you pick up . Well, joe, the aides ive talked to in recent days are still committed to what they believe is their plan and theyre trying to turn off thety transactions. This worked effectively for biden during the campaign. Thats the campaign not moved by the latest Twitter Controversy or moved by whatever the hot line of the day was. They stayed the course. Pushed as an answer, as an alternative to then President Trump, and once the Pandemic Set in, of course, this, look, jb Joe Biden would be the steady hand to lead the u. S. Out of this. Aides i talked to privately wish things had gone a little differently in that first tumultuous few days in afghanistan, certainly. A few moments where in retrospect second guessing the July 4th, declaring our independence from covered Id Declaration from the president , of course, seemed premature. That moment with the Delta Variant starting to percolate overseas and inevitable it would reach our shores, but they believe they are on the right track still. Theyre encouraged by the decline in virus numbers. They believe these Vaccine Mandates will help drive those down further. The economic recovery. Last month the job report, not great. But not a straight line, but believe it wont be, though, not linear, the economy is on its way to recovery, and they do believe that the biden agenda, the two parts. Infrastructure, reconciliation, even though numbers changed slightly, that is a broadly popular piece of legislation. The american public will back it. They believe it will get done, and they think that will set democrats up to be in a good place for 2022. They know odds of against them. Margins are so slim to hold both houses of congress there will be Distractions Day to day. Seeing republican efforts kick that up, but they think theyre on the right track and believe The American public will see it. So before we let you go, elise, tell us about the mandates In Britain that backfired on Boris Johnson and theyre backing away from . Yeah. Before i do so, i just have to pick up a remark from your previous segment on the soccer In Britain. Of renaldo as a petulant show pony, which i think is just the perfect phrase of the morning. But also fits very well for Donald Trump, and if you are looking at bidens political prospects, the fact that Donald Trump is still around and that hes on the wrong side of the Vaccine Mandate argument is extremely helpful i think to bidens political prospects. The the situation In Britain is basically free for all. Boris johnson is not a Mandate Kind of Prime Minister. And having Vaccine Passports is seen as part of the Mandate Culture and in that Respect Britain is fairly similar to the united states. There is a confusion between liberty and Public Health regulation. That said, though, the share of the british population that is antivax is considerably lower than it is here in the united states. And i think part of the reason for that is its not a federal system. You dont have sort of powerful governors. The Prime Minister is conservative. That sort of rightwing antivaxism is just much more difficult to sustain when youre in government. And so britains going to continue to muddle through, but i think that the Vaccine Rate, know, its now over 90 for adults. Wow. The Vaccine Rates going to be high. Were all going to face, in both sides of the atlantic, a Whole New Cultural War where vaccines are approved for under 12s. For children. Thats going to produce a whole yes it will. Easy luce, thank you so much for being on this morning. North Korea State media is touting the successful test of a strategic weapon of great significance. The countrys military reportedly launched a new Longrange Cruise Missile over the weekend, which it says flew 930 miles. Joining us now, Nbc News chief foreign Affairs Correspondent and host of Andrea Mitchell reports, Andrea Mitchell. Andrea what can you tell us . Well, good morning, mika. Well, North Koreas staterun media says the Countrys Academy of Defense Science successfully test fired the missile this weekend amid rising tensions between President Biden and north Koreas Leader kim jongun. Reporter overnight, new signs that North Korea continues to build up its weapons program. The country announcing it successfully launched newly developed Longrange Cruise Missiles. Its first Missile Test in six months, getting special attention because analysts show it seems to show the first missile with nuclear capabilities and a sign of the growing Arms Race between North And South korea, which the united states is watching closely. Our goal continues to be the complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula. Reporter the staterun News Agency saying the Missile Test took place on saturday and sunday launching from an undisclosed location. Flying more than two hours before hitting targets 1500 kilometers away, falling into the countrys territorial waters. The countrys staterun media also indicating that the nations leader, kim jongun, had not attended the weekend tests. Though he has been seen recently. Appearing during a Midnight Military Parade In Pyongyang last week marking the 73rd anniversary of the countrys founding, stirring international reaction with its images of North Koreans in Hazmat Suits and a much thinner kill. The united states indopacific Command Issue as statement on the launch overnight saying this Activity Highlights developing a Military Program and a threat poses to the neighbors and the international community. North korea has been expanding its nuclear and Missile Program since the last summit between kim and former President Trump failed in 2019 in hanoi. Its not clear whether kim has achieved his goal of having a nuclear warhead. Small enough to be carried by this new missile. That remains to be seen, mika, but right now, as well, the administration has a Special Envoy in tokyo, just been in south korea, talking to the neighbors of North Korea, but they have not been able to restart any talks between the u. S. And kim jongun. By the way, the u. N. Meetings are next week. So theres a lot of tension right now about just where we stand with North Korea, mika. All right. Andrea mitchell, thank you so much. Of course, well see you for much more on Andrea Mitchell reports at noon eastern, right here on msnbc. You know, mika, we have actually, some other breaking news. Maybe not quite as pressing, but Jonathan Lemire, let me ask you. Michael schmidt, his his video feed, what do you think he was given for that . Assume, so tastefully appointed with a lot of real touches there that showed a lot of care and thought went into it. I mean, i would have to say, ten out of ten scale, probably a 12 out of 10, maybe. Oh, my gosh. Can i guess . Did you go to harvard . Talk about a Grading Curve . Not even close lets hear it. Trying to be nice to someone who get what you deserved. What do you say, mika . Donny deutsch, you know, the thing that struck me from Donny Deutsch reminded me of the first line of Boston Song that Koim Out In 76, debut single. I woke up this morning and the summers gone. The hamptons, high season of the hamptons over. Donny deutsch, he has to sulk back into the city, and everything seems a little more drab for Disco Donny this morning. You know i go to the hamptons, and that square i get positive Feedback Ak my appearances on Morning Joe because its a very small enclave. Once i get back into the city, a little more of a mass take on things. I get sometimes things thrown at me on The Street and whatnot. Nice to be back here. Room rater is not a big fan of my votes. It really is got to say, i lost my breakfast when i saw what was over your bed. Can we get just donnys shot again. I have a question ive always wondered about. What does this mean . Is that art . One day in october of 195412yearold cassius rode his bicycle into downtown while Rudy Sat on the handle bars. It began to rain taking shelter where a Home Appliance Show was under way. After the rain stopped they emerged to find that bicycle was gone. He had a Brand New schwinn, Beautiful Red Bicycle he shared with his brother and went running around looking for his bicycle and ran back into the Community Center asking for help. Someone told him there was a Police Officer in the basement. He went count and the cop in the basement was Joe Martin running a little boxing school. Cassius told the story years later for a minute he forgot about his bike because the sight of this boxing gym, smell of the leather and sweat, Excitement And Action of boys in a Ring Hitting to the Black And White together. And he reported im going to get the guy. Im going to kill him. Martin said, well, do you know how to fight . Fight . And that was the beginning. Okay. Its already so good. That was a scene from the upcoming Fourpart Pbs Documentary Muhammad Ali. Joining us now, one of the directors of the new series acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is with us. You know, ken, just so excited about seeing this. Its interesting Muhammad Ali is, again, considered one of the great figures of the 20th century. Hes such an icon. Has been in all of our lives, but you go back to probably the greatest Sporting Event of the 20th century, the Fight Of The Century in 71, with ali against phrase frazier, hart to believe how evisceral he was. I can ask people where they were and nine out of ten times guess who theyre rooting for just based on their political background. Thats exactly right, joe. Great to be with you and be in the studio. Yeah. Hes the most important athlete of the 20th century. Obviously he intersects with all the themes about the role of sports in society, the role of black athletes, race, religion, faith, politics, war. But hes got three strikes against him going in there. You know . First of all hes bragging, and hes selfconfident. Thats not the way athletes, particularly black athletes, are supposed to behave. Then he announces hes joining the Nation Of Islam. A separatist, religious cult. Strike two. And then refuses induction into the draft. That moment that frazier fight, Fight Of The Century, hes making a comeback. Vietnam war is winding down. People realizing he was right all along and though hes been horrific to Joe Frazier in the way characterized. Using language of a white racist to talk about a black man, end of the fight when he loses only points, valiant, knocked down last round, gets up after the fight speaks so softly about loss coming into everyones life. There are people out there that are going to lose a job. Are going to lose a loved one. Are going to lose a title. Its that side of Muhammad Ali i dont think people realize was there from the beginning. When the Supreme Court on a technicality releases from his Jail Sentence for refusing induction, he doesnt gloat. He says, i dont know whos going to be assassinated tonight, whos going to be denied injustice. Thinking back past emmett till to 1619 and ahead to people we dont yet know, like rodney King And Trevon martin and ta tamir rice, 13 years old, and we know when he died of the most beloved person on the planet, and it came from his representing people who did not feel they were represented. When he said im pretty as a girl, im black. He was telling everyone of a different darker Skin Complexion that they, too, were equal, and his reach goes beyond black americans. It goes to the world, and in subsaharan africa, africa, middle East And Southeast asia, this is an amazing person. When he held a Press Conference in the united states, the Sports World stopped. When he went to visit pakistan, the country stopped. Hmm. You know wow. Stopped. Ken, Reverend Al is with us. And he has a question for you. But this lines up with what you saw in ali and the same guy that was running around saying he was greatest of all time behind the scenes could be very humble and was always asking you, always asking other civil rights leaders where do i need To Go tonight, who do i who needs my help, who needs a hand . As i said to you last week, he was probably the most humane person, caring person that ive met in public life. And im not seen Kens Documentary but i know kens work. That was a side of Muhammad Ali that people dont know. Even when he was in the Nation Of Islam which it was advocating against certain nonblacks and whites and he had whites working for him and he always based things on love. And i wonder if you got into that part, ken. I remember sitting around hotel rooms and would you go to Deer Lake his Training Camp and he would sit in the Log Cabin that he would have us in and say, you know, Reverend Al, with jesus and Prophet Muhammad taught is the same thing. Tell me about that. How do we get the message out. And i think people dont know that side of ali. Did you get into that in the documentary . Very much so. This is of course about boxing, his Boyhood And Birth and jim crow segregated louisville and about wives and children. But it is also about a journey of a religious faith, of a man who joined a separatist religious cult that beared very little actual relationship to mainstream islam. And was sort of the opposite of what the civil Rights Movement was about. But he was so filled with love. One of his white sponsors in louisville who were protecting him from the mob was challenged. Well how do you like it that your boxer is with a hate group. And he said if it is a hate group, they he cant be a member because there is not a bone of hate in him. And the shot that you showed earlier of the beetles visiting the fifth Street Gym in miami. Three are five men, three of whom are dead, who understood love is all you need. And this is the evolving story of the spiritual journey of Muhammad Ali as much as it is the story of the greatest boxer of all time and as a story of all the issues that intersected and are with us today. And i think that you dont die the most beloved person on your planet, Reverend Al, unless your message is love and his tombstone reads, as you know, the service to others is the wrench you pay for your space in heaven and one has to assume he has a pretty big suite there. Because that love that was in him, hes an apostle of love. And his daughter rashida in the film, boxing is only this much. It is true. He could have done so much else. It was the accident of the stolen bike that he could have become a boxer. He could have been a simple carpenters and you know where they have gone in world history. And rev, last week you told us the story of how Muhammad Ali and the godfather of soul James Brown launched you into the national spotlight. Here now is a look at that. Joining James Brown and Muhammad Ali and myself now from the New York city is Reverend Al sharpton. I would like to ask how you came to meet him and what his movement is all about. As a kid, and everything, i had no model and i was able to be Aip Model for young man like this and he turned out to be a minister and im for everything hes about. A man like me didnt have a father at home but i had a James Brown to look up to and sing and dance like him or Muhammad Ali who i saw stand up, with me and stands with government so i would have a right to come or 20 years later and try to fight for my kids. I think we could tell the kid, you could be a James Brown, one of the greatest entertainers in the world and me, one of the greatest fighters and like you said the hundreds of thousands of kids that need a break. They could get educated. They could go to school. They could learn. Reverend al, i guess first of all, what is it like to watch that now . Its amazing. To think of the these two historic figures. Who was in 1981 that brought me on the the first national show and gave me exposure. But it shows who they were. To think Muhammad Ali would come and do a national show, this is the biggest guy in the word, to help a guy with a youth group. I was in my late, mid20s and showed who he was and who james was and i think that people dont understand that side of them. There was no Self Interest for either one of them to give a platform with a young civil Rights Group out of brooklyn, New York. And ive seen ali do that over and over again. The last time he fought at garden, a kid had come into hotel pennsylvania, which was then the Statton Hilton talking about his grandmother and pat patterson and his bodyguard and he said what happened to your grandmother. Shes dying of cancer, i need some help with the hospital and they said oh, another beggar. And ali said, check it out and the woman was in that condition. Ali fought that night in the garden, and he had that woman at Ring Side and when the guy fighting him almost knocked him down, Ali Kind of stayed up there and at The End of the Fight Ali won and i remember at the Press Conference Muhammad Ali said i was on my way to the mat but i wouldnt fall because my grand mother depended on me. That is what motivated Muhammad Ali. That is such a great sorry. And ken you mentioned that you thought that Muhammad Ali was one of the most beloved person on the the planet when he died and we struggle to figure out who that might be right now. But why do you think, which frankly speaks to how important that he was to achieve that title. Why do you think hes still relevant today a number of years after his passing . Well i think it is because he intersected with so many of the things. That stuff that he brought out that seems to radical and beyond what we were willing to accept from the way athletes are supposed to behave, what fr what he was saying about the Vietnam War and what he was doing and not doing and the generosity which is throughout this film which is codirectored by my older daughter. We worked on central park 5 together as al knows. It is an amazing thing. There was a story that in the fifth Street Gym where Angela Dante comes to him and said there is a guy in a wheelchair and hes going to tell you hes the great Dodger Star who was in a Car Accident and hes going to ask for money and dont give it to him and hes ripping off bills and giving it to this guy and they said, why, hes just a hustler. But we have legs. And that was Muhammad Ali all the way. An people began to understand that generosity extended way beyond the contours of boxing but into our lives. So he speaks to us at the very end of our film when Howard Brian is doing a speech about him, beautiful speech, we cut away to a woman on the the Brooklyn Bridge protesting and we dont show the protest and shes wearing a simple black tshirt with white lettering that said Muhammad Ali. Our film was about freedom, it is hard for a black person to escape the white injustice in this Country And Courage when he exhibited in great quantities and love which was his ultimate message. As Reverend Al said, he understood that all of the religions were the same and used to say them. It is was tributaries to the same thing, the same water flowing to the same great sea. All right. Ken burns, thank you. Once again, the first episode of Muhammad Ali premiers this sunday on pbs. And well all be watching. Ken, thank you very much. It is monday, September 13th and were following a number of developing stories on this Mond Morning including a Growing Number of republican governors coming out against President Bidens sweeping new Vaccine Mandates but the president is threatening legal challenges essentially saying bring it on. Plus, senators Joe Manchin and Bernie Sanders at odds over democrats 3. 5 trillion budget resolution. But another top democrat now says that the Price Tag doesnt need to be so high. And californias gubernatorial Recall Election is if the final stretch with voters heading to the polls tomorrow. Can Governor Gavin Newsom Hang On to his job . Well be following that. But were going to begin with the big Tennis History that came up just short last night. At the u. S. Open. There it is. Medvedev. Daniil medvedev makes his own history. Djokovic fall in straight sets to first time major Champ Medvedev in yesterdays u. S. Open final. Medef denied djokovic what would have been the first Calendar Year Grand Slam for the Mens Tournament since 1969. Djokovic remains tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with 20 career major. So lets bring in mike. Everybody was there to see history be made. To see djokovic get his 21 career Grand Slam. But you know, really from the beginning and this is to take nothing away from medvedev, nothing to take anything i would say his name perfectly here, by the way. But it was like djokovic was like a boxer that didnt have his legs underneath him the entire fight. And in this case the entire match. He just was looking exhausted out there from the beginning. You know, joe, it reminded me of a match 20 years ago when Layton Hewitt did that to Pete Sampras, from the jump you had to trust your eyes and why djokovic looked a step slow and medvedev just looked faster and better from the start. You know it is so funny, i wrote a column in yesterdays Daily News saying you could finally cheer djokovic and you dont think he wanted to get thrown down a flight of steps by medvedev. But there is a only Tennis Expression, it is why they put the net up. We expected one kind of great Story Yesterday and then we got a completely different story. It is like we did with the two wonderful Young Women who played the day before. This was in so many ways one of the most wonderful and surprising opens i have ever seen all the way back to foresthills. And there is still nothing more thrilling than seeing somebody play the match of his life when hes got to play the match of his life. And one of the toughest places. And it seems to better encapsulate those words of sinatra say if i could make it here, i could make it anywhere. And you have djokovic who never made it into the fans hearts as the u. S. Open. It seems yesterday like he finally had, of course it was a defeat, but i thought his show of emotion at The End was sincere. Not being too cynical. I i think he was moved by the fact that the first time as he stood up there accepting the second place trophy, the people of New York really took him into their hearts. It is funny. I was thinking of a moment before New York turned in jim yoi connors favor way back in the day when he stepped to a microphone in front of a New York crowd and he said you might not like me, but i like you. And that the what we saw yesterday. That emotion from novak was genuine. He wanted to be loved. His game is not as pretty as federers. Hes never had the drama of Rafael Nadal but he wanted to beloved. And that is why i think it kind of saved him in The End from this disappointment. He talked about relief afterwards. He said he was relieved that this journey was over. And if he had To Go back and do a summer all over again, i dont think hes go to the olympics and play in tokyo. Because i think he was already started to be fried as well as he played at The Open by the time he got to the big city. Yeah. It is exhausted. It takes a toll. Going to japan took a toll. Lets bring in Jonathan Lemire. Djokovic, like you and me, we want to be loved. It is never going to happen. But we could keep trying. You were at semifinals. Did he look exhausted there. I was think on Friday Night and i do want to follow up with what mike just said, that the crowd was seemingly, 50 50 at best for djokovic. He never has rallied the fans in New York at The Open behind him. He sort of comes off as the villain at times and federer is The Beloved graceful champion in his waning days and nadal has all of the energy and excite and won at flushing a few times as well. And there wasnt a lot of enthusiasm truthfully for djokovic. People were there to watch history for him to win but they werent there to cheer on djokovic in particular. That was a fivesetter and speaking of him being tired may have taken his legs out from under him on sunday. That didnt end until late Friday Night and that is a quick turn around to play a foe who had his number and has beaten him before. You could see how tired he was and how the semis had wiped him out. Speaking of history, saturdays womens final was great. Two teenagers. Yeah. Another kind of beautiful End Result as these two Young Women made their own way into Tennis History. Britains emMa Raducanu completed her journey from qualifier to major champion winning in straight sets against Canadas Layla Fernandez in the unseated all teen womens final. Teens if you could believe if it. These ladies are so young and yet so very impressive. So impressive. And mike lubica, they had such Grace And Presence on the stand talking about Each Other and the day in which they were playing on September 11th, thinking first and foremost about the people of New York and those suffering 20 years later. It really was talk about putting a great face on womens tennis. Wow, these two are global ambassadors. Joe and mia and jonathan, weve had a lot of Drama And Sadness in sports lately and here came these two joyful Young Women to write as great of a Tennis Story i could ever remember. Think about it, connor thrills everybody by going to the semis at The Open at the age of 39. The combined age of these two Young Women is 37. And she already won nine matches before she gets to saturday. Im telling you, i have seen a lot of surprises in this sport for a long time. Never one that was more enjoyable to watch or bigger than this one than emma and layla. Really something. And Ed Luce, emma had Virginia Wade up in the stands watching her make history. Yeah, shes the last britain to win the u. S. Open back in 1977 when i was even younger than was younger than raducanu now. Raducanus victory on the anniversary of 9 11 and this 18 years old and she moved to london when she was two and was nevertheless a typical londoner is i think just such a brilliant expression of what the multicultural side of britain. Quite apart from just the extraordinary phenomenon of who she is. But shes a londoner and it is just a wonderful thing to see. Beautiful. Ed stay with us and mike, thank you so much for coming on this morning. Of course the latest in his famous Book Series is robert b parkers stones throw and and a new book out titled Defending Champ about a Girls Season but not the boys. It is canceled for a lack of funds. Check that one out too. I love it. Reflecting a little bit of reality as well. Mike, thank you very much. Still ahead, new data confirms what any e. R. Doctor in the nation will tell you. Unvaccinated people are way more likely to die from covid19 than those who are fully vaccinated. Well run through the numbers just ahead. But first lets go to bill karins with a check on the forecast and another storm moving into the gulf coast. Bill . It is unbelievable mika. We could have a Hurricane Landfall in texas later on this evening. This increases in intensity overnight. It looks like just Heavy Rain but now Wind Damage and Storm Surge Damage and possibly still epic rainfall amounts. So the storm is just east of brownsville, just barely off the coast but moving northward over warm water the rest of today that is why we think it could get up to Hurricane Strength before landfall. Expected to the south of victoryoria and the Houston Air is not concerned with wind. Notice how quickly the winds die off Saver Landfall later on tonight and then it is a Slowmoving Rainmaker through louisiana and that is the least spot we need any trouble. So we have Flash Flood down to the texas coastal areas. Isolated rainfall totals of 20 inches are possible. And if you know anything about houston and you remember what happened with harvey, that was 40 inches, this is area is flood prone so even 15 inches is a huge issue and with any landfall in the gulf we worry about storm surge, three to five possible up to freeport. A lot of the houses are built for higher and stronger storms than that so that is a little piece of good fuse out of that. Well be watching nicholas throughout the Day Today as hefty rain will be Moving On shore. Also our friends in the northern plains with strong storms an the summer that wont end, hot this week everywhere in the country. That is not getting the tropical rains. Ridiculous. Endless summer. Youre watching Morning Joe. Well be right back. Morning jo well be right back. Youve been taking mental health meds, and your mind is finally in a better place. The first report found people who are not fully vaccinated are 11 times more likely to die from covid19 compared to those who are. 11 times. 11 times. As likely. That study looked at more than 600,000 covid19 cases from april through midjuly if 13 states. Another study looking at the effectiveness of the two mrna vaccines, pfizer and moderna. That report found those vaccines were 87 effective in preventing hospitalizations and remained highly effective even during the spread of delta. Its numbers like that which are behind President Bidens push to get more of the country vaccinated. But there is growing political opposition to the Vaccine Mandates that the president announced last week. And Nbc News Correspondent Morgan Chesky has more than a more than a dozen governors, all republicans, who are pushing back on those requirements. Growing backlash over president Bidens Vaccine Mandate. At least 19 republican governors denouncing the rule. But requiring businesses with at least 100 employees to make covid shots mandatory or offer weekly testing. The President S actions in a mandate hardens the resistance. Reporter Florida Governor Ron Desantis promising a fight. People should not be cast aside because they make a medical decision for themselves. Reporter President Biden calling the position cavalier. Adding all federal workers should be vaccinated within 75 days or face fines. The requirements for vaccination are part of a long tradition that we have in this country as taking steps as a collective to keep people safe. But fallout underway. In New York, forcing one hospital to turn away expectant mothers after Staff Members quit. The number of resignations received leaves us no choice but to pause the delivering of babies. In New York Steven Bullock feels stuck. It is a fight every day. Reporter the Vaccination Rate of his 125 employees, about 40 . Now he fears some quitting to work somewhere smaller where the mandate doesnt apply. You have found anything that is capable of changing Someones Mind at this point . Frankly, i have not. Folks are really dug in and it seems the harder you try, the further they go. Reporter and yet major corporations in favor. Companies like amazon and Home Depot and walmart welcome the plan. The hope to drive down Covid Cases as they start to plateau. Down so during the latest wave driven by the Delta Variant. Doctors say there are three reasons why. Increases used of mask indoors and a steady rise of Vaccination Rates and the virus burns through until there is No One Else to infect. Joining us now New York times reporter cheryl stollberg. Her later report is entitled gop seenls at Mieden Mandate even in states. They want to vaccinate us and you go state by state, especially mississippi and alabama, these vaccine resistant governors in those states. Where before covid, they were some of the most vaccinated states and they took pride in the fact they had no exceptions at all. No religious exceptions, nothing. Go through the hypocrisy from the positions now compared to where they were before covid on vaccines. So every state in america has Vaccine Mandates and some of these republican states you mentioned mississippi, joe, and alabama, have some of the strictest mandates in the country for childhood vaccines. And these are long established mandates with no religious exemptions, no philosophical exemptions. Mississippi has one of the lowest Vaccine Rates in the nation has had the highest rate for childhood vaccines and we know that childhood Vaccine Mandates work because we dont have measles outbreaks any more. We dont have Polio Or Rubella outbreaks any more. So these governors who are Fighting Biden are clearly not acknowledging their own policies. Here is Fox News Sunday Host Chris Wallace pressing republican Governor Pete richts of nebraska on why he opposed new Vaccine Mandates laid out by President Biden. It should be a personal Health Care choice. And Somebody Shouldnt have to make the choice between keeping their Job And getting a jab in the arm. It is just wrong. Ive talked to people, a number of people who have told me if they made me take the vaccine im going to be fired, im not going to do it. But you say it is a personal choice. In fact, to attend school in your state of nebraska, children must be vaccinated against a number of diseases. Let me put them up on the the screen. They must be evacuated against diphtheria, tet an us and per tuesdayis and polio, measles and mumps and rubella and Hepatitis B and chicken pox. Why are these mandates though parents and your estate must fly with and do comply with routinely, why is it that theyre not so objectionable and such a violation of personal freedom, but Bidens Vaccine Mandates are . Well, for all of those that you just listed, there is a long history that parents have had have the opportunity to see how those things have been implemented and there is still a lot of people out there who dont know what to trust. It is unbelievable. Mika, just absolutely unbelievable that you not only look at the governors and what theyve said in the past, and what theyre policies are, you look at what people like Mike Pence have said in the past, that is it is a great danger to not get these vaccines. And cheryl, here is the deal. We have seen this one work. There is a bit of history to work with here. There is a bit of reality to work with here. There are people who are alive because of the vaccine. There are people alive who have gotten break through cases that arent so bad because of the vaccine and im sorry to be course about this but there are hundreds of thousands of people who are dead because they did not take the vaccine. The science is playing out before our eyes. Right. So a couple of things about what the governor said, first of all in a disease outbreak, getting vaccinated is not a personal choice. It is not. It is something that we do for the community. And this is been long upheld with legal precedent. Second of all, the governors who are complaining about Bidens Mandate fail to note that he in fact gave businesses an out. Theyre employees can opt for mandatory weekly testing. And third he talked about well there is a long history with those other vaccines. Well how do you think we got that long history. We got that long history because the vaccines were mandate and some of the vaccines themselves created pushback when they were first mandates because people didnt know what to trust as the governor said, people were cautious. But in an Infectious Disease outbreak, your personal choice ends where my right not to get killed been anyone Infectious Disease begins. So we have these collective actions for the good of community, not the individual. Youre so right. And all of these people that are talking about it, i keep writing it down from all of the republican governors. They should make medical decisions for themselves. This is a personal choice. No, no, it is not been that way for A Hundred years when kids go to school. Here is a quote by Ed Luce from Mike Pence, here a article from 2015 where they asked all of the republican candidates running for president the position on Vaccine Mandates and ill post it on my twitter feed. But here is Mike Pence. 2015. Indiana law requires all children to be protected from vaccine preventible diseases like measles, by getting vaccinated. Vaccines protect all children from illnesses and our administration strongly urges for families to have their children vaccinated. Ted cruz called the antivax movement silliness. Said that every child should be vaccinated. You could go through the list. I just posted it right now on twitter. The hypocrisy is just stunning that republicans have decided that theyre going to make this a difficult Choice And Cause pushback by their own words. Yeah, i mean, its the change here that has happened in the last few weeks is not that republicans have gotten worse. Theyve been bad on this really since biden became president. It is that biden has Got Steelier in his response to them. I think hes given up hope in the last few weeks that there is going to be any reasonable conversation about vaccinations. You know, as cheryl just pointed out, this is not a Vaccine Mandate. That is when you have no choice but to take a vaccine. I think there ought to be a vaccine alternative. People could test instead once a week and continue To Go into work under the osha regulations. He hasnt announced a Vaccine Passport, a vaccine i. D. , a Qr System that you see in most other western countries. He hasnt gone nearly as far as most of the western countries in the measures he unveiled last thursday. And so i think what the Real Change here is bidens Got Steelier, but i think there is a lot of scope for him to get steelier still. There are other things that he could do which are perfectly within the law within the realm of reason and consistent with individual liberty and freedom. Coming up we have Jeff Daniels on next week. Monday, hes coming on. Were going to have a debate. It is going To Go like this. Ive done Newsroom Number three and number two to kill a mockingbird. Number one Dumb And Dumber. Reporter this comes just as it is back to full Inperson Learning on monday for more of the nations kids. Meanwhile the fda is urging parents not to seek shots for children under 12 who are not eligible for vaccination. Saying younger kids may need different doses and theyre working around the clock to figure out what that is. Why cant children take vaccinations that are approved for adults . Children are not little adults. And we do need to wait for the pediatric trials as theyre being conducted to read out and that could tell us what is the right dose and the right frequency and what are Safety Side effects that we need to watch for in children. Reporter nationwide concern is mounting, with more than 251,000 new cases of covid recently reported along children. Lila, the mother of six, worries about her kids. Now to the effort to recall californias democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Tomorrow is election day. And today President Biden will be in California Campaigning to help newsom keep his job. Heres Nbc News Correspondent Gaud venegas. Reporter in los angeles, Gavin Newsom is making the final rounds as the deadline for a special Recall Election approaches. We will defeat this republican backed recall on tuesday. Reporter the Governor Campaigning to keep his Job As his opponents criticize him for imposing heavy restrictions during the pandemic and his handling of issues like the homeless population and immigration. I think there is a lot of change that needs to happen in california so im very grateful for it. Reporter yet newsom maintains strong support. I think hes doing a good job with covid response. I would like to see him continue his term. Reporter voters will decide by tuesday to keep Gavin Newsom as governor or replace him with one of 46 challengers. Newsom needs more than 50 of voters to choose no on the ballot, if the majority selects yes, the opponent with the most votes would become governor. The key is turnout. This is an overwhelmingly democratic state. So if they could turn out a bunch of californias 10 Million democrats, theyre going to beat californias 5 Million republicans. Reporter the list of contenders ranging from the former mayor of san diego to Reality Tv Star Caitlyn Jenner but the frontrunner conservative Talk Radio Host Larry Elder. Im not antivax. Ive been vaccinated. What im opposed to are Vaccine Mandates and Face Mask mandates. Reporter joining in support for newsom, are democratic heavy weights former president barack obama, Vice President kamala harris, and President Bidens set to join the campaign. Should newsom come out really strong, he sails forward into 2022 for a message for the party about how covid should be handled overall. A defining moment for california and a crucial test for newsoms legacy. Joining us now, national reporter for the Washington Post Dave Zweigle and from the washington examiner, david trucker. Hes a Contributing Writer at vanity fair. Both have been covering the california recall battle. So Dave Zweigle, how could it be that this Recall Effort has ever been competitive when were looking at a state that Donald Trump only got 34 in 2020 and 34 in 2016. The connection got lost. Cant hear it . Dave trucker, if you hear me, respond. Well, joe, to quote that classic film and dumber, so youre saying there is a chance. And before all oh, no. Im sorry, mika, i had to. Look, we will see how this goes tomorrow. And i think if you want to ask how was this competitive, how could it be competitive, even though i think weve reached a point where it no longer is that competitive, there was a lot of dissatisfaction with Gavin Newsoms leadership. There is a Homelessness Crisis and rising crime, there was frustration with his covid leadership and the regulatory regime he put in place. There was a mismanagement of the States Unemployment Benefits Program so there was a lot for voters not to like on top of some hypocrisy from his infamous dinner at the french laundry in napa valley. Im sorry, dave. We have a delay. I thought you were taking a break. But just talking about that dinner, that really was a defining moment in his political career, wasnt it. That actually got him to this point. The hypocrisy that so many voters in california perceived coming out of that decision and some other things that he did personally. Correct. But i that is correct. But i also think it is important to understand that newsoms biggest enemy in this campaign has never been republican voters, it is been democratic apathy. And i what Larry Elder allowed Gavin Newsom to do and ive talked to a lot of republicans who like me were present in california for the 2003 recall and saw the fundamentals that allows that to take place and what republicans have told me that elder is the perfect Foil Nor Newsom and allowed the governor to make this race, which is an untraditional race because of the two different ballot questions, about elder and about republicans and about trump rather than all of the reasons why a lot of californians are very frustrated with this leadership. And when you have a 22 1 2 Percentage Point Lead in registered voters the way democrats do and when you dont have a larger than Life Alternative appealing across the aisle, and Larry Elder is a very dynamic, whip smart, really interesting guy. I listen to his Talk Radio Show for years when i lived in california. But when he made the message more geared toward his talk radio audience, rather than on newsoms foibles, i think all of that combined to make this something that newsom is very likely to survive on tuesday. So, Dave Zweigle, if we have you back. Would you agree that apathy among democrats would be the greatest challenge for Gavin Newsom or is there Something Else . I think it was laid out pretty well there. And i also would point out that the governor didnt have a lot of Success Convincing democrats to turn out just based on talking about his record. The message of the Antirecall Campaign in the summer was california is coming back and were beating covid. The Delta Variant, im sorry to cut out before so i didnt hear everything, but when the governor focused on Vaccine Mandates similar to The Ones discuss in the last segment, with the Test Option for Health Care workers and for educators, that polarized the race and woke up democrats. If you look at the map of the state for who has gotten vaccinated, it scans very closely to a map of where the most democratic votes are. But newsom made this calculation and i dont want to say that is why he instituted the mandate but it became clear that politically most of californians will get vaccinated and most democrats by far will get vaccinated and turning this into if you stay home, youll have a republican governor like Ron Desantis who tears this up and who gives you confusion over whether your teachers are vaccinated, et cetera. That hardened the race. You see in the turnout so far democrats have been outvoting republicans about two to one, a little bit better than their margin in registers voted. David zweigle, let me stay with you. This is Jonathan Lemire. Is there any national lessons that we could learn during this race. Are there sfuf is that we could be instructive going forward for the midterms . Well, i would point to the Vaccination Issue and not every state, no state really is quite as liberal as california. But in virginia, new jersey, youre seeing democratic governors do the same thing and saying, look, do you want to be texas, is that actually a increasingly vocal reframe from democrats. It is been decades of republicans saying do you want to become the next california or New York city. If newsom is successful and polling suggests that hes successful to the 215 points, if that is the margin after everyone knew he was 50 50 this summer and then the message we could run in blue and purple states saying you dont want the chaos of what Greg Abbott and Ron Desantis are doing with vaccines. Run a risk. Even for newsom, were going to look at the patterns of where did Democrat People voting, where do they vote yesond the recall. Were getting some lessons there. It is not all good for democrats. Thank you both for your reporting this morning. We appreciate it. And up next, emmy winning actor Jeff Daniels joins us with a look at his powerful new project. That was a scene from the new series american rust that premiered last night on showtime. Starring Jeff Daniels. Good to see you, jeff. How are you . Good. Good to be seen, mika, good to be seen. I hear you on that. Tell us about american rust. This looks incredibly powerful. We have been talking about you a lot lately on Morning Joe about other things youve done which well get to later. Oh, god. I know. But tell us what really compelled you to get behind this project . Philip meyers book, Debut Novel for philip in 2009. I just kind of kept tabs on it. When i got in a position to get something made, i said lets chase american rust. Certainly now with the country where it is and a lot of people chasing The American dream that for a lot of them is left, growing up in michigan, growing up working class, i knew this guy, i am this guy, and i wanted to dive into where this guy is right now in, you know, todays america. To kill a mockingbird and your betrayal of Atticus Finch was timely for the time that you did it, and will be timely when you go back on broadway. Talk about american rust and how the relevance that it has to the time that were going through now. Well, both american Rust And Mockingbird are similar in that they speak to this crossroads that the country finds itself in. There are people around the country not just in southwest pennsylvania who have been abandoned, left behind. Jobs went elsewhere. And theyre looking for somebody to tell them the truth. Theyre looking for somebody to, you know, keep the promise and to maybe keep those jobs here. With Mockingbird Post George Floyds Murder you have a bigger awareness of white blindness. And i think Aaron Sorkins play of the book addressed that. It addressed it before george Floyds Murder. And i think even now with a lot of white people understanding that the history that maybe they learned in School Isnt the whole history and really coming to grips with do you want to be part of the new america, do you want to usher in an all inclusive america. For those of us that think thats a good thing, mockingbird speaks directly to the white people who are The Ones that need to hear it that yes, it is a good thing, yes, we can be better than this, and yes, it can be a new day. Jeff, talk about how important for you as an artist as you take on these characters and take on these rolls to have made the decision to stay in michigan, to stay connected to the community, to understand and even while picking topics and picking subjects and picking Tv Series and plays that deliver that message, it helps you keep your feet on the ground and have empathy for those frustrated because they were left behind by globalization. I hear them. I work around them. I really could have, if the acting hadnt worked, i would be at my dads company, working, driving truck, whatever that was. Theyre not stupid people. Theyre not less. We certainly feel that in the midwest, you know, fly over country, you come to the coast as an actor i felt i had to work harder to beat the guys from yale and Julie Ard and i was just from central michigan university. I understand that kind of behind the 8 Ball Kind of thing they feel. They have certainly with social media, with the global, everybody has everything on their phone. Theyre very aware and just want a fair shake. I dont know if you remember, when i visited you in michigan for Cbs News Sunday Morning, i went to the Lumber Company with you. I met your dad. What youre talking about is real guys. In terms of your dad, really good man. Yeah. I based atticus on dad. I wish he had been able to see it. My dad was a republican. I grew up in a republican household and ill never forget, eight years old, walking into my house, theres dad sitting with an africanamerican man. Probably the first africanamerican man i had seen. And he said jeffrey, this is a friend of mine. His name is herby. Mr. Pierson, nice to meet you. Jeffrey, get out of here, boom, gone. But he took herbie around town and introduced him to every one of his white business friends, republican friends in the same way. A friend of mine, his family moved here. He got him into the Church Dad was going to. He welcomed him to the community. A republican. Ill never forget that. Thats how i was raised. There is equality. The respect for other people was drilled into me. So when you go into an Atticus Finch, i dont have to look too far to pull that character up. Whether it is Atticus Finch and the core of who your father was or american rust and the people you have lived alongside with in michigan all your life, do you think you would be able to bring as much to the table in your characters if you had moved to hollywood . Question answers itself. No. No. No. I dont think that would have. That was the choice. It certainly wasnt to be more in the world and all of that, but no, that would have been a different life. Im very happy with the move. We raised our kids in a part of the country, we understood how to do it. Kathleen and i were from there. It worked out well. Now at this point in my career i get to do things that matter which is a luxury for an actor and im very fortunate. You know, joe, he gave me a ride in his rv. Yes. I feel like one of the lucky ones when i went to visit jeff. We went on a ride in his rv. I still have questions about but we wont ask them on the air. Sure. And again, i got a chance To Go through that Lumber Company, and theres your dad who im telling you, youre right. I mean, you couldnt find a better man who loved you more. He had a decency to him. Oh, yeah, he had a decency to him, a civility, work ethic, life ethic. Yeah. He told me, i remember being a 23yearold Actor who had done an off Broadway Play or two, him taking me out to dinner which was weird and then him sitting me down. He goes i want you to know im already proud of you. Okay. I didnt quite get it, but it was just and ill never forget that. Thats who he was. Thats who he was. You know, hes watching. Hes still watching. Yes, he is. I tell you what, we watched your latest cbs Sunday Morning Show Interview and started tearing up when you told the story. Before we let you go, though, mika was sheltered curl turlly. Her father didnt let her watch tvs and movies, i am taking her through the greatest movies of all time. Thats citizen cane, godfather 2, and Dumb And Dumber. I must admit she did not get Dumb And Dumber. Jeff. It was heartbreaking. Awful thank you. Thank you. It will be on my tombstone unfortunately, or fortunately. The tombstone will read i am shaving. Thats what will be yeah. Still funny. Still funny. Its still funny. Its not. Still amazing. And it is again one of the three greatest movies of all time. The new show
