Plan, including Vaccine Mandates impacting millions. In our next hour, a sign of the depths that we have gotten to when it comes to pandemic politics. This time last year, my grandmother, who was a former teacher at the Rutherford County School system died of covid, because Someone Wasnt wearing a mask. This is a very shut up. That is a teenager in tennessee debt laughed at and mocked while talking about his Grandmothers Death and need for mask. That teen will join me coming up. We begin this hour with tension within the democratic party. Hes dug his heels in saying 5. 35 trillion plan will be passed by the deadline and proposes slowing down the vote, a Proposition Bernie sanders is calling unacceptable. Its absolutely not acceptable to me. I dont think its acceptable to the president , to the american people, where the overwhelming majority of the people of 9 democrat you can caucus. I believe we all need to sit down and come together with a Reconciliation Bill which deals with the enormously unmet needs of working families. Ali, you and i predicted this the week before and week before, and wondered if Joe Manchin would be on board with the 3. 5 trillion. Not necessarily surprising for the people following this line. Nonetheless, what are democrats going to do it . Reporter its an expected wrinkle taking on newness because of the timing. The senate comes back tomorrow. Joe manchin clearly using the sunday shows as a way to make people aware of his position, hes not going to be on board for 3. 5 trillion in spending. Its similar to The One he made in an oped, where he basically said they should pump the brakes on all of this spending theyre trying to do in the Reconciliation Bill, and making some version of that argument across the sunday shows this morning. Check it out. Im just saying we should be looking at everything, and were not. We dont have the need to rush and get this done in a week, or someone is going to fall through the cracks. Reporter there, it sounds like hes making an argument this for him is all a function of time, its moving too fast. Our Colleague Chuck Todd pressed him on that, and that is the overall Price Tag that manchin has long said he has a problem with. The other thing this triggers, though, when he says this will not be done by the September 27th deadline, this is sort of the Worthcase Scenario for the overall infrastructure package. Democrats and progressives have long said they dont want to take up the piece thats already passed the senate. They dont want to take it up in the house until the senate has moved on req siltuation. Manchin is saying theyre not going to do that. The September 27th deadline is something that they extracted as a promise what could happen next is progressives could make good our threat, that theyre not going to back that bipartisan bill unless they see movement on the Reconciliation Bill. Its a quagmire, one were going to see democrats try to negotiate their way out of in real time. Its going to be a busy time. Okay. So we have that going on we also have preparations in place for September 18th, next weekend, this rally put together by a former major Talking Head when it comes to the trump administration, someone who was a big supporter of former president donald trump. Basically this rally will be in support of the insurrectionists. What is going into the preparation for this . Yeah, in support of the insurrectionists, theres nearly 600 insurrectionists who were arrested and their connection with January 6th. Those cases are moving their way through the legal system. Frankly it could take years, but this rally, meant to support those several hundred insurrectionists, of course the fears here on Capitol Hill are very palpable. Law enforcement are preparing to put back up fencing we have seen other things come into play, cameras mounded high on boxes. So those preparations will only being more visible to those of us who are up here regularly, but lawmakers are getting briefs. Speaker pelosi is being briefed Tomorrow Morning along with her counterparts in the senate, as well as Minority Leader kevin mccarthy. They will be briefed Tomorrow Morning by the Capitol Police on the Security Precautions taking place ahead of this rally on September 18th its not just happening here. This is something thats centered on d. C. , but also rallies across State Capitals around the country. I think theres about 13 of them. This is not the only place well be watching next saturday. Nevertheless we have already seen the early Hall Marks and the memories are visceral here. The thing to remember is the key difference between January 6th and the upcoming September 18th is lawmakers will not be here. Its a saturday. The Senate Wont be here. The House Isnt even back from recess yet. That makes a world of difference in terms of securing this complex. There is concern among Law Enforcement for violence. At the same time its a key difference we have to keep in mind. Next hour, by the way, Representative Judy chu is going to join us with her thoughts on the Reconciliation Bill. You have the biden administration using the sunday shows as well to defend the covid plan. From the beginning, the president and All Of Us have sad we have to use every lever we have. Following us as the president s response. Good to see you this after. Yeah, yasmin, no surprise here we are already seeing republican opposition to these new rules that the president announced last week. The president announced all federal employees, as well as federal why thors will have to get the coronavirus vaccine. He also said that prior employers, companies with more than 100 employees, will have to either require the dough covid vaccine, or institute some other weekly testing requirements. Republicans are already coming out, vowing to sue the federal government. They saying this unconstitutional, particularly that risch, to institute Vaccine Requirements. They say theys overreach. We cannot allow this our enemy is virus. This really disrupt the country. Reporter as for a potential lawsuit, i have spoken with a number of lawyers and legal experts. They say the president does have legal grounding here. They do not think the threats will really derail the president was asked on friday whether he himself was concerned about the legal challenges that republicans are vowing. His response was, have at it. Good to see you, lauren. Thank you. Governor Gavin Newsom is continues to campaign aggressively with only two days left in the recall election. Scott cohn is in San Francisco for us. Where do the numbers stand at this moment . Reporter well, yasmin, they are increasely breaking in favor of Governor Newsom, not so much that the campaign is saying, dont worry, president biden, weve got this. The president will be in Long Beach tomorrow, as they bring out the big guns. Kamala harris was here last week, theres a heavy Tv Add in heavy rotation with former president obama. Polls so 60 of likely voters say they do not want to see Governor Newsom recalled. Remember, the worry going in for the democrats was that the republicans were way more enthused about the idea of recalling the governor than democrats were in preventing it, leading to the worry about an enthusiasm gap. In the end, it doesnt look like thats happening. Democrats are outpacing republicans, you know, 2 to 2 in overall turnout, and by a few percentage points, as a percentage of the number of people in the part in the state. You seem to have more democrat enthusiasm. Paul wescot says hes liking at mailin ballots breaking heavily in democrats. Republicans are more likely to turn out in person, so well see if they can make up that gap in the next couple days, but this was a lot of ground to make up. Yasmin . Well be watching. Scott cohn for us in San Francisco, thank you. In our next hour, well talk to the last person who experienced a gubernatorial recall in california, former governor gray davis, who was replaced by arnold schwarzenegger. Hell join me live at 4 00 p. M. Still ahead, everybody. American extremist, george w. Bushs stark 9 11, a warn that might be too late for the republican party. Welcome back. A lot of Reaction Today to one particular speech during this weekends anniversary. Former President George W. Bush calling out the threats with you now face from domestic terrorists. Theres little cultural overlap between Violin Extremityists abroad and add home. In their disdain for pluralism. In their disregard for human life, in their determine action to defile national symbols. They are children of the same foul spirit. So the former president harkened back to the unity felt after 9 11, and appealed to that. White House Correspondent for roycer, jeff, great to see you. I take it youre in some sort of public transportation, which is why youre wearing a mask . Im smiling under the mask. Im in a pool caravan. We appreciate you joining us. Why do we think the foreign president chose Yesterdays Speech to make some of those marks . President bush doesnt give remarks very often. I think he saw an opportunity to weigh in on that particular issue. Number one, obviously on the 9 11 anniversary, but also on the heels of president Bidens Decision to withdraw from afghanistan, but also one of the Big Public Forums that President George W. Bush had to just speak and express his views, without specifically mentioning it. I really cant tell you until why he waited until now, other than to say it was apparently what he considered the right time, the right day to address it. So you mentioned growing political division in this country. We all know what it is that youre talking about, right . You think about that, and you think about what is ahead for us specifically, looking at saturday September 18th, this planned rally organized by a former Trump Operative basically for the obstructionists in favor to support the insurrectionists. Do you think the words of former President Bush have any impact on those type of followers . I mean, i think the evidence would show that it probably wont, but his words have an impact perhaps on the party at large, certainly on the country, and also on a day like 9 11, in particular on a day like 9 11, when people are reflecting what happened, he referenced the unity. President biden referenced the unity that the company felt, at least in the aftermath. Thats not a sense this country has. So President Bush was calling on it again. President biden praised him for that speech. Whether that has an impact on the people planning this demonstration, i think seems unlikely, but getting the country back on that discussion, is a shared vision between the current president and President Bush. Jeff mason for us, we appreciate you joining us while youre working today. Thank you, as always. Good to see you. Thanks. Coming up, were going to delve into the battle for the gop. Welcome back, everybody. Were following Breaking News out of atlanta where authorities are investigating a reported explosion at an Apartment Complex in the northern suburb of dunwoody. Police are saying the site is very active and the cause of the blast is under investigation. We will keep you updated as this story develops and bring you anything we get. Then to florida. Governor Ron Desantis ban a masks in schools scored a legal victory. This is coming as the state is reporting some staggering covid numbers, including a record 2,488 deaths in last week alone. Nbcs Stephanie Stanton is in florida. Ive got to say, the numbers coming out of florida the last couple weeks, its astounding to think how many are affected how are folks faring . Reporter instead. Residents here in florida still bitterly divided. I want to show the flags here. These flags we are set up in honor of those who lost their lives on 9 11. Here in florida, another deadly tragedy unfolding. That is, as you said, the Death Count from covid19 continues to rise here. When you look at the latest numbers, as you said, this is the third straight week that the state has broken records in terms of its Death Count. More than 2400 death the reported last week alone, confirmed by the state. It was originally reported by johns hopkins, which is also tracking numbers here in the state. All of this coming as the Battle Over Mask Mandates continues here in the state of florida. You might say the governor did score a legal victory, because last week a judge actually issued a stay, if you will, on the Mask Mandates. What that means is the Mask Mandates will continue the Nomask Ban in schools, i should say, will continue. Many parents, of course, are very upset. They want to have Mask Mandates inside schools to keep their kids safe, also due to the large number of covid cases. Overall, again, residence here in florida remain political divided about this issue, but one thing is pretty clear, support for Governor Desantis remains strong. There was a Gop Event on friday night, about 1,000 people attended. The governor got a Standing Ovation when he sort of spoke out against president bidens recent announcement of some of those national Vaccine Mandates, mandates for federal workers, and mandates for millions of workers in the private sector. Again, florida, the death rate, report numbers for the third straight week in a row, yasmin. Stephanie stanton for us, thank you. The attorney general Vivek Murthy is speak out. One of the thing we cannot do, is allow the Covid19 Experience to turn us against each other. The enemy is the virus, not each other. The requirements for vaccination is a part of a long tradition as a country, to take steps as a collective to keep people safe. So this is coming as the number of covid cases in this country passed 41 Million today. The number of deaths heading towards 700 thousands. Thats roughlied same as the entire population of nashville. We have to bring in dr. Nahid bhadelia. As we talk about the mandates that the president has put in practice here, is this plan going to go far enough to get us where we need to be . Hi, yasmin. Weve been really slow when you look at the target for 70 , right, in july . Were just reaching 74 getting one dose. The tough part here is when you look at a Kaiser Family Fund survey in july, what it said was a one third of about half of those were people waiting and seeing and people who said they would get it if it was required. It is going to make a dent. I think youll see that portion of the population now step up and roll up their sleeves. The question is, will it make a big enough difference in area that have really low Vaccination Rates . Places like idaho, that had to unfortunately deployed a Crisis Standard of care, doctors had to choose between patients coming for care, because they were overwhelm with covid. Their Vaccination Rates are around 40 . You want to be an Up Tick in that, and from that, i think this mandate is important. One of the places i would like to see them go further is expanding to requirements in domestic travel, especially with the Holiday Season on the horizon. I think, you know, one of the issues with they mandates and some of my reporting a couple weeks ago, i spoke to some nurses, who said theyre willing to lose their jobs over this, right . And one of the concerns across hospitals were seeing it in Upstate New York as well, that theyre going to have a shortage of Healthcare Workers with these mandates. My question to you, though, is what is more important at this point . To get Healthcare Workers vaccinated and or to lose some of those Healthcare Workers to tax out a staff because of these mandates . I want to start by saying Vaccine Requirements are not new at health care. Many statelevel requirements currently exist for schools, for so many infectious diseases weve gotten into control because of these requirements. The same thing in hospitals. In my View Healthcare workers are particularly in a place where theyre responsible for the care of the vulnerable under their care. Yes, there is a concern that there is a portion, but i want to say, compared to the larger healthcare community, this is a smaller portion of Healthcare Workers. What you have to balance in my mind is protecting the impact that unvaccinated workers will have on their patience, on their fellow Healthcare Workers. The outbreaks we have seen where none of us were vaccinated, and so you have to balance not getting Healthcare Workers vaccinated, the cost of that, compared to the cost of potentially losing part of the workforce. Last question you have for you, basically, where are we at this moment when it comes to Vaccine Approval for children 5 to 11 . Pfizer is ahead of the game in this. They have signaled that a couple weeks, you know, in a few weeks theyre submitting. Theyre looking at primary data right now. The good news means that recruitment is done. Ought patients they needed, as well as to make sure theres no safety signals. Now they have to submit that data to the fda. Thats the process we have seen previously where the data gets evaluated by the committees on biologics. Im hoping that were going to see something in the next month or so, but well have to wait and see what the data shows when its submitted. Thats good news, hoping its the next month or so, of course, as a parent of young children heading back to school. Were going to continue to watch afghanistan. That forbids women to terminate pregnancy after six weeks. We have two guests this morning. Lisa, i want to talk us through this ruling in mexico, considering it is the secondmost catholic country in the world. How unprecedented it is and how they got here. Well, thank you, yasmin. Boy, you said it. Its really a landmark case. Its going to be a its a legal precedent that will allow every court in members to consider unconstitutional whatever punishment or criminal there is for women. This will open the door for individuals and organizations to sue states where most states in Mexico Abortion is still illegal. With the ruling of the Supreme Court, its opening the door so that individuals and organizations can sue the states and, you know, turn these laws down, virtually making abortion legal. As well, you know, this is going to have. Experts think it will have an immediate effect for women in print, physical allow they have to refer their cases to courts in light of the new ruling, making them available to get out of the prison. Can you explain to me what the State Abortion practices was before this ruling in mexico . Absolutely. Latin america for the last decades have seen the devastated effects of total abortion bans, or bans very close to The One in texas. In the state of mexico, Mexico City had legalization of abortion after 12 weeks, but the rest of the country was on a statebystate basis. But the reason why the court is changing this rule is the court recognized these types of laws, like The Ones in tex and The Ones that still exist in El Salvador and honduras really harm women. They dont deter them from having abortions, but it makes a difference how they have abortions. Either safe at places where they can receive medical attention, or just simply trying to figure it on their own. What the Supreme Court in mexico is recognizing is these types of laws are not only discriminatory, but affects those most vulnerable, those in lower economic status, those as victims of rape, those in Rural Areasened so we need to level the field so anyone who can get pregnant can access these healthcare services. What does this mean for women that have had abortions and or performed abortions in that country, been prosecuted for and convicted of, and currently in prison in mexico . Right now every woman can immediately seek release no woman could be in not, what we are going to see is how this is going to happen in the rex of the country. Probably a lot of women need to seek legal counsel to be able to ask for their release. Also, this decision applies for cases that happened before, so its not only going forward, and what we hope eventually, is all their criminal records get cleaned. Luis, you think about what has taken place in texas, and obviously this decision in mexico. Is there now a thought, a chance, a likelihood you could see Women In Texas Crossing The Border to mexico to get an abortion . Definitely. I think thats a real situation, especially in the state where abortion has been De Facto decriminalized, its a Neighboring State with bordering state with texas. So you cant see that in daze where, you know, after this restrictive Abortion Law is executed. Also, what is very notable with the law, is its creating traction across the region in latin america. You have the recent Argentina Law having decriminalized abortion and now the ruling in mexico that is opening the door. So its given momentum to womens rights. I actually found this astounding, as i was rule i about this, the Pendulum Swing that you see in places like El Salvador, and then what is taking place in places lie argentina, as you mentioned and mexico. Thank you both. We appreciate it. Coming up, everybody. 9 11 in the spotlight. 20 years later what we have learned. Jim ogrady joins me live, after the break. M ogrady joins me lir the break. The fbi has released what is expected to be several of the 9 11 details. Although heavily redacted, it provides a summary of one Fbi Interview carried out back in 2015, with a man who had caulk with saudi nationals here in the united states, though it offers no clear link from Saudi Arabia and the 9 11 attack. It was just released hours before biden marked the 20th Anniversary and the first investigative roared to be shared. As we continue to search for answers 20 years later, over time our understanding of the horrific attacks has somewhat flattened. That flattening is a big part of my next guests broadcast, which chronicles the years leading up and the chances we had to stop it. The World Trade Center bombing in 1993 was a slap in the face, a warning bell, whatever you want to call it. The toll was shocking. Six dead, more than 1,000 wounded, 500 Million in damages. In 1993, the twin towers were landmarks of daily life, especially around here, you would go about your say and see them. In 1993, Ramsey Yousef stood here. When he saw the twin towers, he sauce sitting duckses. What he saw was a big puff of black Smoke Cup up. He sought 9 towers were still standing, the clock was still ticking, so he went to the airport and he gout out on a plan and he went to his next terrorist plot. Jim Ogrady Host of blindside. Thank you for joining us. It is an amazing podcast. Ed to keep listening and listening, because i wanted to learn what was next. One of the theme Thee Mattically is you draw out for folks, all of the signs that were there, right . The war that you point out that we were in, but it seems as if the fbi, the cia, the u. S. Government really didnt even know, right, the sign that should have pointed to what actually took place on september 11th, 2001. With mistaken strategies, with not understanding the signs that a novel threat was emerging around the globe and getting ready to strike the united states, and thank you for not wanting to stop listening. What we essentially do is cover the 11 years leading up to 9 11. You focus cuss on the World Trade Center bombing. That was a long chain of events that brought, in 1990, theres an assassination, a brazen assassination in Midtown Manhattan hotel. The shooter is connected to a Terror Cell in brooklyn whose members then go on to help ramzi yousef bottom. He says you can hijack planes, fly them into buildings, something that was almost unimaginable. He gets caught, but that plan it passed on to his uncle, Khalid Sheikh mohammed, who eventually hooks up with osama bin laden. And there were turning points, missed opportunities, occasions that could have led to a different outcome. We dig into those, as you heard. There are points that you point out, right, how the united states in a way helped build up these organizations. For instance, mujahedeen, helped supporting them fighting against the russians. You talk about how the cia helped Recruit Islamist fighter to afghanistan throughout the world to fight against russians, because they had a mutual interesting, to years later, deem them a terrorist organization, the very people they supported and trained at one point. Great point. The cia itself coined the term blowback. Thats what you just described. The music behind this whole store is really the afghan war in the 80s, when afghan rebels aided by fighters, including osama bin laden, repulsed the Soviet Union from afghanistan, with the help of the cia. We have one Cia Officer who was there at the time say, look, it was not an idealistic proposition from either say. It was a marriage of convenience. When the war was over, the soviets were gone, that marriage dissolved. Those jihadists were almost drunk on the idea that they had defeated an empire, the soviets, and now they had turn their sights on another empire, the united states, which they believed had been meddling in arab countries for far too long, and strike violent blows against the united states. Thats why Al Qaeda was formed. It is a podcast that needs to be heard, absolutely, the ticktock leading up to september 11th. Really fascinated, well reported.
