The president is being met with staunch resistant from several publican governor, including floridas rhonda scientists, who state just broke a new high in covid related deaths. Nearly 2500 this past week. And the seas Stephanie Stanton is in tampa with the reaction to the new restrictions. Stephanie, good morning to you. The president is pushing for these Vaccine Mandates in many, many places, but there is still a lot of pushback and a lot of this coming from where you are. Yes, good morning to you kendis and lindsey. Indeed, in fact, Governor Ron desists desantis vowing to fight the biden administration on his latest mandates and what he wants to do to try to curb the spread of covid19. Let me set the scene for you here. I am here at the Tampa Bay middle school. Take a look behind me, because you can see a memorial for those that died on 9 11. This of course, as a deadly tragedy continues to unfold here in the state of florida. As you mentioned, we are now seeing record deaths for the third straight week in a row. Florida has broken records for the amount of covid 19 deaths in this state. This is all coming more than 2400 deaths, in fact, reported last week alone. Four of them children under the age of 16. Now, this is all unfolding as the battle over Mask Mandates continues in this state as well. You may recall that Governor Desantis banned any kind of Mask Mandates within local School Boards. As a result of that, a group of parents sued the governor. And what happened was, a judge a couple a weeks ago, issued a stay. Saying that desantis essentially overstepped his duties i actually instituting that ban. Essentially giving it to the choice of parents. Well, now, whats happening is that a judge has said no. That Governor Desantis, until all of this winds its way through the court, that Governor Desantis can in fact continue to ban masks in schools. So, this is not sitting well with a lot of parents. We understand is that this is not going to go back to court until probably the School Year is over. So, at this point, Governor Desantis has vowed to take money away from local school districts, and we are seeing that in a couple of districts here across the state. Im here or at tampa, this is in Hillsborough County. This county, the School Board here, Hillsborough County schools, has actually instituted Mask Mandates as well. So, they are going against the governors orders. All of this is happening, as you said, as deaths continue to rise here in the state of florida. Including some Death Rates among children who are not yet eligible even for the vaccine. So, that is what is happening here on the ground in florida. The battle continues over masks here. Stephanie, what about Business Leaders with some of these new recommendations, requirements, from the biden administration . How are they reacting . It depends who you talk to. There are many businesses who are on board with these biden administration. They want to keep their employees safe. In fact, these are major businesses. Those with over 100 employees, are wanting to help do what they can to prevent the spread. But then again, you have Business Owners here in the state who me side with Governor Ron desantis. Its interesting here on the ground in florida, because there are definitely two sides. There are definitely hard lines drawn on both sides. The governor does have a lot of support here on the ground. So, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. All right, Stephanie Stanton there in tampa. Thank you so much for reporting, stephanie. We want to go now to one of our go to vaccine experts. Of course, doctor Peter Hotez, codirector of the center for Vaccine Development at texas children hospital. Doctor, what do you think about what were hearing from the president . The mandate here that we now know about. And also the messaging. Do you think that if people are required to get the vaccine to go back to work, that will change anything . Do you think the President S messaging, this is about personal choice, its about protecting our community. Do you think that will be resident with people have been reluctant so far . I think the president is in a very tight spot. This epidemic is still accelerating in a terrible rate. Were still at around 1500 deaths every day, and it goes up towards 2000 deaths on some days. And is going to continue like this for the rest of the year. So, were already at 650,000 americans have lost their lives, it will easily get up to 800,000 over the coming weeks. I think what the president is doing is trying to use every lever he can pull and push under the limits of federal power. And thats where the problem really is. He can do all the mandates he wants he, can push the Labor Department to enact those new orders, but it will still only get a so far. Until we can figure out a way to get buy in from the governors, especially in the south where all the Red States are, for up in the mountain whereas west. Those deaths will continue. So, the mandates are i support those mandates. I think we have to do it. But its not going to do the full job. Guess what else the federal Mandates Wont do . They wont do anything about the schools. So, we have no Vaccine Mandates in just about any of the school systems, with the exception of a Couple Areas in california. And so many kids are getting sick right now. Now were Hearing Lots of stories of kids getting sick and bringing it home to the parents, was in the past it worked the other way around. So, this thing is still on fire and will be for the foreseeable future. So, i dont know what the President S options are. My gut tells me that he needs to come down here to the south, to meet oneonone with the governors and try to make personal appeals and do what he can. But its a dire situation we are facing. Doctor, i want to talk to you exactly about the situation we are facing. Youre quoted as saying that perhaps in some states we had a plateau, but it does appear to be a very high plateau. Where are we right now . You look for instance that whats going on in texas where i am. Were hitting 250 deaths per day and thats going on on a daily basis. And although were not going up in terms of new cases, its still plateaued at a screaming high level. You look at some of the counties in east texas, or those around shelby county, tyler texas. You go west of waco, west of dallas, those counties have Infection Rates that are the highest in the world. We are the epicenter. The same with some of the counties in tennessee. So, we are the hotspots globally and thats the situation. Not a proud moment, i would say. No, its very upsetting. Doctor, i want to talk to you. You mentioned you think that the President Should make a visit and make a personal appeal. But axios is calling this essentially americas civil war of 2021. Were talking about such a high plateau, were talking about this thing is still on fire. Theres still a dire situation out there. Do you have a picture of hope right now for where we can still be headed in this, given the tensions are just so high and people are just so polarized on this . Clearly up in the northeast, you are doing much better. The Vaccination Rates are successful. Youve got essentially all of the adults, all of the adolescents vaccinated. And i dont know that will immunize you against the epidemic entirely. Youll still have some issues as you head into the Fall And Winter months, but it wont be anything like what we will have in the rest of the country. Right now, theyre such a high percentage of those who are unvaccinated, theres no stopping the delta variant. It will continue infecting people and lending people in the hospital, until it completes its job, which is to infect. Essential, y every american will either be vaccinated or infected in the coming weeks. So, trying to do what you can to prevent that and educate people about the fact that young people are going into hospitals at extraordinary numbers. And this has a lot of collateral impact. What were seeing is our icus are getting overrun across the midsection of the country. Nurses are getting exhausted. Other hospital staff, doctors are leaving their post. So, this is causing instability in other ways. Those who are defying getting vaccinating continue to get angrier. So, this is a period of great instability for our nation. No hope. All right. Theres always hope. Its a bleak picture. Well, theres hope, but i think what weve got to do is weve got to i think the president has to come down here. I think hes got to create and the series. Classified document related to the 9 11 investigation has been released. Following President Bidens Executive Order, the fbi published a redacted version of the 2016 document Last Night. And it reveals new details on the investigation into the planning of the terror attacks, and the rule of people who helped or communicated with the hijackers, including saudi nationals. Families of the 9 11 victims called on the president to release this information, saying they would object to see appearances at the memorials unless they were declassified. The president has been under significant pressure from families of 9 11 victims, survivors, first responders, who had told the president , if you dont release these documents and the classify them, make them public, that we dont want you to attend the 20th Anniversary Ceremony at ground zero. Of course, the president did attend yesterday, and thats because he signed an Executive Order last week, saying that he would declassify these documents. I mentioned, this is the first document we are expected to get. The president had said he would release that one on the anniversary of 9 11. And by the way, the saudi government this week said they welcome the release. So, what do we know about next steps, when we might be able to get our hands on more . Thats right. The government has said, the saudi government, basically the past 20 years, that any Allegation Or Suggestion that they were involved in the 9 11 attacks were categorically false. Now this specific report that we got Last Night revolves around a 2015 interview that the fbi did with an unnamed saudi man, who they said worked at the Countrys Consulate in Los Angeles at the time. They said that he had contact with people who gave support and helped the hijackers in their planning, and help them out once they were in the u. S. Part of the motivation for releasing these documents was to demystify some of the theories around 9 11. A lot of these 9 11 families have been pressuring biden to release these documents, had insisted that the saudi government was in some way responsible. Those cases are still making their way through the courts. They could take years. Weve already seen some guilty pleas coming down. But in terms of the way that lawmakers on Capitol Security are preparing for this rally, were going to start seeing some of those scenes fortifications that we saw around the capitol going back up. It will hear from both Law Enforcement and lawmakers face to be able to learn for what happened in the past and make sure that it does not happen again. And many of the speakers that theyve been hoping for . In recent weeks, weve seen a flurry of requests from this committee, asking both telecom and Social Media Companies for preservation request. But also going to seven federal agencies, as well as the national archives, asking them to produce documents. A whole range of things that theyre looking for from those entities. Were starting to see in the last few days, thousands of documents pouring in. A little bit vague vague on what specifically theyve gotten. At the same time we heard from the committee this week that the majority of Social Media Companies are cooperating. Thats notable, because House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy was very clear when those requests went out. He said that if republicans were to retake the house after 2022 in the midterms, those Social Media Companies who corporate would be punished. Nevertheless, that committee coming out this week saying that those Social Media Companies are cooperating. At the same time though, in a statement that we got from a spokesperson over there, they said they are going to need more information. And this is what really caught my attention, they said that theyre open to getting that information by quote, whatever tools are at our disposal to get the records we are seeking. The word that is not use their, that we are going to be looking for in the next few weeks, is the word subpoena. Congressman and chief Deputy Whip joins us live right now. Congressman, thank you so much for being here with us. Its been more than six months since that attack, the January 6th attack. Almost nine months as this will be. How is your treatment going . How are you doing . Well, thanks for. Asking im doing well. Im really happy that some friends of mine made sure that i sought treatment. Other fellow members of congress help me with that. And it makes a difference. When we experienced trauma, it has an impact on us. And im happy that have been able to benefit from that treatment. It is a terrible day. Hearing some threat that this day might rivas again, obviously, for any of us who experienced this is really much more difficult to handle. And so happy that youre able to speak out about it publicly, and that youre publicly talking about it. So important when it comes to Mental Health issues. Do you know of other colleagues that are seeking treatment because of what took place on January 6th . I do. In fact, there is a group of us, those that were stuck in the gallery, we got trapped as many of you may know when the capital was evacuated. There was a handful of us that couldnt get out. So, that group, we meet regularly. And quite a number of them have sought treatment. Its one of the reasons that i did what i did, so that the staff, police officers, other members of congress, people who were affected by this, realize that it was a traumatic event. It was an experience that has a consequence for all of us. And it is important that members get treatment. Thats why im so public about the fact that i havent. And its so important for people to know that its not just physical injuries, but also the trauma that youve experience mentally, can last for so long. Lets talk about next saturday. How worried are you . Im concerned. Im concerned specifically about the Security Threat that this mob that continues to fester, presents. But honestly, im more concerned about the fact that in the months that have followed January 6th, we have members of congress, legitimate socalled voices, Minority Leader of the house, continually trying to pretend the January 6th didnt happen. And that is a precondition for a happening again, to try to mollifying the voices. That somehow because they support their politics, they can be let off scotfree. And this is a frightening thing. The thing im most concerned about, where is Kevin Mccarthy . Where are the republican leadership . Worthless voices when we see planning coming again, around another potential attack . We do have one republican voice speaking out. Former president donald trump. His comments on September 11th getting compared to what we heard from President Biden and former president george w. Bush. Listen. This is the 20th year of this war and should have been a year of Victory And Honor and strength. Instead, Joe Biden and his and left administration, surrendered in defeat. We saw a national unity bend. We learned that unity is one thing that must never break. Unity is what makes us who we are. There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists and violent extremists at home. They are children of the same foul spirit. So, what do you make of that rhetoric . You see with former President Obama also releasing a statement to remind us how so many americans give of themselves an extraordinary ways in the days after 9 11. A unifying message from so many of the former President S, except one. Its really frightening and its just a reminder of how deranged that president was. I mean, is so obvious. Donald trump will present anyone who praises him. Regardless of their behavior. Regardless of what their intent is. If your for him, hes for you. And that could be that extends to criminal acts. Its pretty five new, and especially as we look back at September 11th and realize that Girl Moment may momentarily did bring the country together against a common emmy. And we have a common enemy, and we cant even organize ourselves in some of the french that Battle Trump continues to foment against an enemy we could crush. Weve had more people die in a day as a result of covid, then died on September 11th. A yet, we still have people who pretend that is not true, that is not real. Those are the first flights to leave kabul since u. S. Military withdrew, and since the taliban took over. Progress also in the americans continuing to get out of afghanistan by those long, complicated and dangerous land routes. And the White House is pointing to these flights and these Land Crossings as something other vindication that they are able to continue to get americans out of afghanistan, even without any troops on the ground. That is the belief that they have taken some heat for, from both democrats and republicans back in washington. But setbacks, to. Everybody who was on those flights from kabul had an international pass for, as well as an afghan one. We have yet to see the taliban release any afghan allies, any of those siv visa holders. People who just have an afghan passport. Setback also in the flights to the united states carrying afghan evacuees have been temporarily suspended because a number of cases of measles were found among that afghan population. Not clear right now when those flights from Transit Centers like here in Doha And Ramstein airbase in germany are going to resume.
