Tour of the attack sites from that awful day with calls for national reflection and, at this point, unity. The core of who we are is not divided. Everybody says, biden, why do you keep insisting on trying to bring the country together . Thats going to affect your wellbeing more than anything else. President bidens predecessor striking a less unifying tone today, releasing a video where he talks about 9 11 for less than 30 seconds and spends a full minute and a half Attacking Biden by name for an afghanistan Withdrawal Policy that began during his own presidency. The former guy made it his own separate visit to new York City First Responders this afternoon and will follow that up by participating in a pay per View Boxing Match later this evening. Later in the show, ill talk to candidate Eric Adams and Filmmaker Michael Moore about what the nation has learned or not from 9 11, because the Ripple Effects of that day when jobbed was Joe Biden was still a senator are still haunting the White House today. With the aftermath of a forever war in afghanistan, a right wing extremism, and the response to it diverted by politics, and a Republican Party that has now fully refined the use of racism to gain electoral advantage, the heart of which being texas, where gop lawmakers enacted their controversial Voter Suppression Law this week, upstaging every other State Legislating to keep minorities from voting ahead of next years midterm elections. Of course, texas is also singular in its repression of abortion rights. The Justice Department announcing that it will now sue the state over its severe Sixweek Abortion Ban as other Red States emulate its example, posing a generational legal threat to Reproductive Rights. And so we start tonight in texas as Politicsnation And Msnbc continue to mark the 20th Anniversary of 9 11. Joining me now is Congressman Mark Vee see, democrat of texas. Congressman, thank you for joining us tonight. Obviously i want to get to the pain in your Home State of texas, but its only appropriate that i ask you what youre thinking about today watching the nation that you serve as it processes the 20 years that have passed since 9 11. Its one of those days, obviously, that, you know, that you never forget. I mean, i remember exactly where i was that day. And i pray for the families. I pray for the First Responders. Our friends in new York City, those brave souls on the flight in pennsylvania, everyone that was a part of that day the close to 3,000 lives we lost is something we should never forget. And we should always be vigilant about. There are still forces that would like to be disruptive and do grand events like what happened on 9 11 and we need to stand vigilant and take them seriously as we remember what happened to our country 20 years later today. And i will continue to pray for these families and the victims and for our country. And i hope this really serves as a reminder of how appreciates Freedom And Democracy really is in our country. Youre the cochair of the congressional voting Rights Caucus and you were one of the faces in your states democratic delegation. Throughout the legislative standoff in the Texas Legislature and many of the texas legislators that went to washington. Im going to Houston Tomorrow preaching at lily grieve baptist church, Reverend Anderson in houston. And i think those legislators were heroes. But despite all of what they did earlier this week, Governor Greg Abbott signed a State Senate Bill those texas democrats were trying to impede, triggering now third lawsuit in Federal Court over the laws restriction, which would disproportionately affect minority voters. Because weve been inundated with suppressing legislation in the last year, i dont want this audience to lose sight that this is a national and it is very national in its end game. But can you illustrate what this law means for black and brown voters in texas, congressman . Yeah, absolutely. And what a bad week for texas. I think the governor has done everything he can possibly do to embarrass our great state, first with the abortion law, and now with this sweeping antivoter law. This is bad for a lot of different reasons. You look at harris county, for instance, the largest county in texas, the fourth largest city in this country. They put together a great program where people regardless of their Party Affiliation could vote easily by having 24hour early voting by not having to get out of your car during covid19 so you could stay safe while you vote. And the governor signed this into law outlawing those things. Reverend al, i think about my own grandmother. You know, you talk about feeling blessed, my grandmother died two years ago. She was 106 years old and she remembers i keep a copy of their Poll Taxes from 1948. I keep a copy in my congressional office in d. C. My grandmother never missed an election because she remembers having been born in 1911, 1912, she remembers how difficult it was for black people to vote in this country. And i also think about her organizational system, particularly as she got older and she didnt drive anymore. She would keep documents and boxes and things like that. And if you look at this bill, particularly for the vote by mail, now you have to put the last four digits of your Drivers License or you have to put last four digits of your social Security Number on your vote by Mail Application and when you mail your ballot in, you have to put those and they have to match up. And if they dont, they throw your ballot out. I think about my grandmother who the last 20 years of her life had poor vision, stopped driving when she was 85 years old. Never went back to renew her Drivers License after turning 85, and how much trouble she would have today if she were still alive just to simply cast her right to vote. And for her to have to see that all over again, that sort of attempt to make it harder for black people to vote, it absolutely pains my heart that in texas, you know, after the 1960 voting Rights Bill was passed, we put together some of the most some of the best policies in the country if you look at it. And now were going backwards and making it so much difficult for people to vote. I think its an embarrassment. Well, we cant let it stick. In addition to triggering a Justice Department lawsuit, the Sixweek Abortion Ban is also an issue there. It was signed into law this week in texas and it has become a North Star for other Red States looking to institute similar restrictions. So since were talking another national fight, what are congressional democrats prepared to do legislatively to complement the Dojs Litigation . Yeah, absolutely, Reverend Al. Let me say this. Thank you to all of the activists out there, all of the good democrats, people that care about womens rights regardless of their Party Affiliation that have gone on Social Media and that have given information out so people that are poor, women that are poor, that if they need to seek abortion services, that theres information out there that will allow them to do that. I just wanted to give them thanks on that. Legislativewise, the Justice Department right now, the biden administration is suing the state of texas. I welcome this suit against our state because this is obviously the absolutely worst thing that could happen when it comes to Reproductive Rights in this country. I also know that representative Judy Chu out of california has a bill shes working on. The biggest thing we can obviously do is that we need to make sure that we continue to mobilize. The reason why we have this decision is obviously, you know, because of electoral problems that we had. We need to make sure that we are getting everybody out to the polls in 2022 and beyond, because now we can see the seriousness and the consequences of this. Think about that. Look whats happening in voting in this country because of the voting Rights Act being dismantled the way it was. Now you look at this 63 decision when it comes to womens Reproductive Rights, its serious. Theres a reason why republicans have been able to mobilize their voters around these issues and we need to make sure that we get our voters. Thats why these issues to me are connected because we must protect the vote so we can put the right people in office. Lets not forget the Supreme Court is stacked by two president s that the lost Popular Vote but won in the electoral college. Thats right. Thats george Bush And Donald trump. But thank you so much, Congressman Mark Veesy. Joining me is democratic candidate for mayor of new York City and former Police Officer in new York City, Eric Adams. Mr. Adams, today is the 20th Anniversary of 9 11, a very raw and painful time not only in our nations history, but for all americans on a personal level who remember that dark day. And for those who dont know, as i do, you and i go back 35 years. You were an nypd Police Officer at that time. Two decades later and we still see so many First Responders who helped save lives on 9 11 suffer from illnesses stemmed from being present that day. Republicans on The Hill have continuously blocked additional measures to give these heroes the aid that they need. What would you do to make sure those brave men and women get necessary assistance to cover all their medical treatments . [ no audio ] youre muted. We dont hear your mic. I think we have a problem yes, im sorry. I know theyve been trying to mute you for 35 years. I stated that at the time i was a lieutenant in the new York City police department. I recall that day at Ground Zero where we saw the ground was smoldering. Many of the military personnel, firefighters, Police Officers were covered in soot. It was a challenging time for our country. But i believe the day we should really acknowledge is september 12th. On september 12th, we got up, teachers taught, builders built, retailers sold their goods and services, and it showed the resilience of our country during a significant time it was our Pearl Harbor moment, and we responded accordingly. Part of it was our First Responders, the men and women who responded to the scene, who those who were there that didnt wear a uniform. The first thing we can do is not give them the necessary medical benefits that they need to ensure that we did not forget them when they stood up for our country. As the start of the School Year begins, the Mask Mandate Debate heats up. In new York Governor hochul has made it so that all students statewide must wear a mask at all times indoors in order to attend inperson classes. Compare this to florida where governor Ron Desantis attempted to ban masks from classrooms. What is the number one thing we need to do to protect our children from getting sick . Its so important because nothing brings out a greater level of emotion than how we feel about our children. You know, as a dad of a son, and i know you have two daughters, we think about all the time are we doing the right things for them. And the best way to do the right things is to allow science to direct our actions. What our medical professionals say, a combination of the cdc, the Department Of Health and mental hygiene, if we allow the science to dictate thousand how to better protect our families and further prevent an increase in covid cases, particularly of the delta variant, which is impacting which i wont be we will make the right decisions and take the emotions out of it so that we can do whats best for our children and families. Now, new yorkers are still recovering after the remnants of Hurricane Ida left a path of destruction, including massive flooding and numerous deaths. Many streets, apartments, and subway stations were damaged from the storm. If elected mayor, what will you do to ensure that infrastructure gets the upgrade needed to avoid this happening again, especially in areas dominated by communities of color . Well, you know, im not a Government Builder so i wont go too far down the line, but as the Borough President in brooklyn, we were hit hard as well as queens. I visited locations on Staten Island as well. First, we have to be honest with ourselves of what is needed, intervention and prevention, a term i use often. Those are the longterm things. Everything from closing our pica plants, cycling, buses, diesel fuel, a green infrastructure. I like to say a real green Bond Job Initiative to shore up our water fronts. We have to be honest with yourselves that this did not come from high tides. It came from rain. Mother nature is making it clear that we cant take shortcuts. And i believe some of the intervention that we can do now as we invest in building our sewer systems, but also lets look at what other countries are doing. Im in contact with the leaders over in the netherlands, and i want to see what theyre doing as they have done a successful job of how do we live with water, not how do we keep water out. All right. Ill have to leave it there. Thank you very much for being with us, Eric Adams, on this day. Coming up on politicsnation, the 9 11 attacks were meant to divide us, but now, more than ever, we need to Rise Up and come together. Thus, my political panel weighs in on Donald Trumps bizarre 9 11. Veasey Marc Veasey Mark Seesy K Seesy marc for this weeks Rise Up, i want to briefly reflect on the 20th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks, the aftermath, and american unity. In the days following that tragedy, americans pulled together under a common motto, united we stand. It was emblazoned on signs, tshirts, and in the hearts of most americans. There was a notable and shameful spike in Islamophobia Rhetoric and violence in some quarters. But the majority pulled together in solidarity and community. Historically, most americans have agreed that the September 11th attacks changed this country permanently. But theres been a striking shift in the perception of that change. A year after the attacks, americans were still standing united, and a majority of us thought that change would be for the better. Ten years after the attacks, we pretty evenly were split on whether the change would make us better or worse. And now, 20 years later, nearly half of americans think we have been permanently changed for the worse. While only onethird think weve been changed for the better. There has been a change in this country over the last 20 years, and that change is perhaps best displayed in how we respond to tragedy. Two years before the September 11th attacks, Childrens Television Host and american icon Fred Rogers gave an interview that contained one of the most lasting pieces of wisdom. My mother used to say a long time ago, whenever there would be any really catastrophe that was in the movies or on the air, she would say, always look for the helpers. There will always be helpers. Mister rogers was right. Even as the ruins in new york, washington, and pennsylvania were still smoldering, thousands of americans lined up to help firefighters, Police Officers, ems workers, and even random passerbys put their lives on the line, at risk to return to the smoking ruins in an attempt to rescue strangers. Meanwhile, charities and Blood Banks across the country faced weeks of crowds as americans lined up by the millions to give anything they could. In tragedy, americans turn on one another united. But somehow in the intervening decades, some of us have lost that sense of Comradery And Responsibility and community. Sometimes loving thy Neighbor Isnt as demanding as running into a collapsing highrise. Sometimes its as simple as getting a vaccine, or wearing a mask to stop a pandemic that has already taken more than 650,000 american lives. Today, it is no longer enough to look for the helpers. We must Rise Up together and be them. Ybodys a skeptic. Paper money. Its the future get outta here. Im leaving with my gold. Its not crazy. Help me, mother. Its an omelet. Just crack an egg. Moving on now to my political panel. Juanita Juanita Tolliver is a democratic Strategist And Susan del percio, a republican strategist. While the president s attended memorials on the 20th Anniversary of 9 11, Donald Trump issued a video Attacking Biden, then stopped at an nypd precinct near Trump Tower where he continued to spread his Big Lie about the 2020 election. Later tonight, hell provide commentator for a pay per view poxing marxism. I want to let both of you briefly react to this stunt. I mean, susan, then juanita, what does this say about the disgraced former president . Well, rev, not once did this president ever think it was his job to serve the country. He only wanted to figure out how the country could serve him. And these Actions Today are just more of a reflection of it. If i didnt know better, i think he hated this country. I think that he hates the country that did not get him reelected. But i think he hates the principles of being there supporting and valuing human kindness. And all he wants to do is be a bitter, angry, petty, disgusting little man. Juanita . Look, it was Reality Tv Show trump today, and thats been who the country has always engaged with. Thats how he always responded to the needs of this country. As susan said, he hates any type of Human Interaction he has to have, any humanity that he has to display. And so this fully tracks with the disgrace that hes essentially displayed out of his adult life. So we shouldnt expect anything different from him. If anything, hes likely going to use this same type of Tone And Speech as he runs in 2024 as he alluded to, which he only put on the books after he got blowback after it was clear he was going to florida for this boxing match. Now, susan, lets turn on texas. One of the most underhanded aspects of the unconstitutional texas Abortion Ban is the enforcement mechanism. Theyve turned ordinary texans into vigilantes, in part to make it harder to sue to overturn the law. This week the department of justice stepped in seeking an injunction in a texas court. With this likely to end up in the Supreme Court. With a conservative majority seemingly eager to overturn roe. Will there be blowback . There wont be for the State Legislators in texas. They do this to actually get reelected. Itll be interesting to see as far as does it Supreme Court take up the Mississippi Case Weve discussed and make how far it decides there settle the issues in texas. I dont know. I mean, the doj seems to have an interesting way in tackling this, much like they did in arizona on the immigration issue. But i think, again, its just going to have to take its way up to the Supreme Court. The blowback could be against republicans nationwide, especially if you notice, rev, you dont hear republicans praising the texas law. Theyre staying far away from it because they know its barbaric to make a woman carry their Rapists Baby to term. Thats disgusting and they know it. Juanita, lets turn to the pandemic. Following President Bidens announcements regarding Vaccine Requirements in federal and private workplaces, Researcher Governors proved they care more about political posturing than saving lives. Take Bill Lee of tennessee who tweeted about his opposition to Covid Mitigation even as his state has broken hospitalization records every day of september so far. Most eligible americans are vaccinated. Why do republicans seem so desperate to infect their own Shrinking Base . Rev, You And Me are asking the same question because it makes no sense, especially i was raised in memphis, tennessee, so im looking at this like, yes, this is the same type of republican tone that we get out of texas, out of florida, out of other states where republican leaders have refused to enforce any Safety Protocols around this pandemic, have refused mask mandates, have refused vaccination requirements, and these are the exact type of republican leaders who are perpetuating this pandemic. As you said, rev, tennessee is breaking records every single day with new covid hospitalizations, but i do want to emphasize what President Biden mentioned, that this is the type of republican that his Executive Action is looking to get out of the way so this pandemic can get under control. And so republicans are acting out because this is the narrative, this is the fight that theyve been pushing. It fully aligns with What Trump was saying at the start of this pandemic and theyre holding to it like a Vice Grip because they know it riles up their base. But like you said, rev, their base is dwindling. Hundreds of thousands of people have already lost their lives in this pandemic. Hundreds of thousands more also stand to lose their lives if they continue down this track. So they are losing lives. They are ruining peoples lives all for political narrative, and it makes no sense. Now, the california gubernatorial Recall Election is next week. And though democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is looking better in recent polling, the Party Isnt taking anything for granted. Vice president harris campaigned with the governor this week, and President Biden will head to california to rally supporters in the coming days. Susan, whats at stake for california and the rest of the country in this Recall Election . If newsom should lose, the leading republican candidate out there should win, it will be a topsyturvey, once in a blue moon, it will be dramatic. Except he will have his hands cuffed behind his back because the State Legislature will be able to override anything he does. Newsom is in this problem, though, because of Covid And Part of his covid response. I actually think the president s mandate, even to the republican governors, was a gift. They should be sending them Gift Baskets because this will help every state with the mandates get covid deaths under control and stop the spreading. They may complain about it, those republican governors, as juanita said, to their base, but the businesses are also welcoming it. All right. Juanita Tolliver And Susan del percio, thank you both. Up next, the man who documented this countrys darkest days and its aftermath, reflecting on tragedy and honoring heroes 20 years later. Michael moore joins me after the break. Music playing. The September 11th attacks created the war on terror, which quickly became a War On Islamic Terror on all but name. While the george w. Bush administration was focused on the foreign threat, the number of domestic Hate Groups rose every year for a decade after the attacks, peaking some 20 years later under president trump. And feeding the Extremist Presence at the January 6th insurrection. Now one of the most strident critics of the Bush Era contends it would have happened at the capitol as 1 6 was started by 9 11. Joining me michael moore, oscarwinning director of the Film Fahrenheit 9 11 and host of rumble with michael moore. Brother michael, we appreciate your voice, specifically with us being here tonight. As we mark this anniversary, you were one of the most visible critics of the war on terror, and your film, fahrenheit 9 11 remains an essential d. That period. But that was followed immediately by military response that resulted in dual destabilization that stretched for decades. And here you had an explosion of Bigotry And Scrutiny that muslimamerican communities like those in your Home State contend with to this very day. You told my colleague, brian williams, this week that Osama Bin Laden ultimately won because of what happened to our constitutional rights, our privacy. I wonder if you saw american Race Relations and civil rights included in that victory, and if so, explain how. Absolutely. I remember the morning of 9 11 after the towers fell and watching tv. And immediately, there had been no investigation or anything. Everybody jumped to the fact that they were muslims or arabs. While that was true, we didnt know it. It was just the first instinctive reaction to say that. Even though just two years prior to this we had the Columbine Steve Kerr committed by two young white men and six years before that the bombing of Oklahoma City committed by two exmilitary white guys, white americans. So because we had those two horrific events before 9 11, it might have been okay to consider the possibility, but it didnt exist. When you say that i was one of the few voices at that time to speak out against this and to slow the rush to war, that is not thats that is not an understatement in the sense that there was nobody allowed on tv that had a dissenting voice, and there was Barbara Lee, the only member of congress to vote against the invasion of afghanistan, and myself and a few others. But most democrats, if you remember, 29 democratic senators voted in favor of Giving Bush The War Powers for iraq, and all the democrats in the senate and the house with the exception of Barbara Lee voted in favor of the invasion of afghanistan. I do remember that. In fact, for two or three years they kept supporting the war in walk. When i ran for president , i was one of maybe two or three candidates out of nine that was against the war as late as 2004. But picking up from the last question, michael, could you draw a line from 9 11 to January 6th . Absolutely. I saw you tweeted after afghanistans fall last month, quote, their taliban, our taliban, everybodys got a taliban. Theyre at their best when they confiscate the halls of power. Right. I thought about that statement because according to the southern poverty law center, you had a continuous increase in the number of organized Hate Groups every year after the 9 11 attacks, a number that appeared to peak under president obamas first term, dipping under his second, before, of course, spiking under president trump. Do you think the insurrection happens without some of the cultural forces that were unleashed 20 years ago . Theres a direct line between the two. Race is always the factor. Think about this. Since the germans were defeated in may of 1945, i think every single war with the exception of maybe the serbian war we were involved in, which the old yugoslavia had many, many muslim citizens, every war has been against people of color, whether it was korea, whether it was vietnam, whether it was the good enough the Gulf War or iraq war. We dont drop bombs on white people anymore. There was an excellent piece on frontline on pbs this week. They bravely drew the connection between a generation that grew up knowing that Bush And Cheney and rumsfeld have lied about the reasons to take us to iraq and that so many people after that war so many national guard were sent over there to die. And they came back a lot of those who survived, came back with a hatred of the u. S. Government. And a lot of americans started then not trusting whatever the government is telling us. Dont believe them. And they drew the line on frontline this week to bush essentially generating this lack of trust and believing the government is lying to how easy it was to get so many people to believe that Joe Biden didnt win the election, that trump won, trumps still their president , and that we have 80 Million americans who still havent gotten vaccinated because they believe Bill Gates put a chip inside the vaccine. Wow. And hes going to track us. The madness of this belief in the unreal and the untrue began back then after 9 11. The day after 9 11 on 9 12, bush had not met in his first eight months his head of counterterrorism, richard clark. Finally, clark gets a meeting the day after 9 11, and bush doesnt want to talk about anything but iraq. He said, he testified thats all he wanted to talk about. Iraq didnt invade us, clark tries to tell them. They want to go after Saddam Hussein sane. Everything we witnessed with Bush And Cheney, that was the beginning of this, and that has led us, yes, to January 6th. That has led us to this awful division, this sort of so far, hopefully so far cold Civil War between each other. But were not going to make it. Yeah. As americans, if we keep this fight going with each other. We could have our disagreements, but thats not whats been happening now. Now its turned violent and the violence is encouraged by the former guy who held office for the last four years. And now weve got a president trying to get us vaccinated, trying to save our lives, and trying to stand up against all the lies that are being told. And when he said that this week, 300 Million a day, al, 300 Million a day is what we spent for 20 years on this war. What would our cities look like today if we had that 300 Million a day for 20 years . Absolutely. What would our children have . What would our Health Care system look like . Ill just go down this list. This is what i meant by Bin Laden ended up winning because we destroyed ourses. We are moving away from our constitutional rights. I will have to have leave it there. Sorry i went on so long. Michael moore, we thank you as always for your time. Up next, my final thoughts. Stay with us. Stay with us dont settle for silver 1 for diabetic dry skin 1 for Psoriasis Symptom Relief and 1 for eczema Symptom Relief Gold Bond Champion your skin when i get a migraine, i shut out the world. As i reflect on this the 20th Anniversary of 9 11, one of the things that occurs to me is those terrorists, those attackers that brought down the Twin Towers here in manhattan and the plane in pennsylvania went down because of them and the attack on the pentagon, they saw all americans as the ebb my. They went after All Of Us why they didnt send in an email telling blacks dont go to work tomorrow. They didnt send in a message to latinos or asians saying go to work late. Theres something going to happen in the morning. They saw us all as one that they had to go at All Of Us to make their point and to deal with what they felt was right. The question is, we dont see All Of Us as one. Yes, we have political differences. Im going to texas now. We are not the enemies and we should be fighting for what will help All Of Us, protect rights to vote equally and what we are about. We learned 20 years ago that we can die together. Now the challenge is can we live together . Well be right back. Well be ri. Its velveeta versus the other guys. Clearly, nothing melts like velveeta. Trelegy for copd.
