House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will hold a press hearing. The event is being organized by a Group Led by former Trump Campaign Staffer and its meant to show support for Capitol Rioters who have been charged. A Florida Judge ruled yesterday the state cannot enforce its ban on Mask Mandates in public schools to guard against the coronavirus. Governor Ron Desantis is appealing the decision to the states district court. In a hearing held remotely, Leon County Circuit judge Jon Cooper gave his decision and said they exceeded their authority by supporting the Blanket Ban on the Mask Mandate and imposing financial threats. He said were not in normal times and this years Delta Variant is more infectious. Cooper went out of his way to say hes ruled over former governors. President biden will deliver a speech at 5 00 p. M. Eastern time and is expected to urge private businesses, schools, and federal agencies to institute stricter Mask Mandates. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki discusset it with press reporters. He recently finished a sickmonth stint as a senior provider on the Covid19 Defense and he served with the war in afghanistan. You were a teenager living in new York City on September 11th. How did what happen that day influence your decision to enlist later on . We were both in new york and it does feel like yesterday. I remember that fear. My mother taught around the corner from ground zero. Thank god she wasnt there that day. But, you know, there are other memories that are seered as well. That memory im sure you feel this too that youre so afraid that day and you look up and see the Fighter Jets and know youre not alone. You remember the days thereafter new yorkers stopping each other on the street, hows your family, are you okay, im here for you. And then in the months thereafter how we united as a nation. In this moment of trauma it showed what is the benefit of america. And so much of that day affected and impacted the rest of my life 20 years thereafter, you know, deploying to afghanistan, fighting as a member of congress for benefits for first responders. We cant forGet what we went through that day. The signs of the missing, the posters that were hung up all over town, people looking for Loved Ones they hadnt heard from. You mentioned that spirit of unity that came out of that that, frankly, dissipated in the months and years that followed. But what sort of what lessons could the country learn from September 11th, both in terms of, you know, a spirit of national unity but also just in terms of defense, in terms of looking at threats from home and abroad . I think theres an interesting link to covid. In the years after 9 11, what we did is we said we were going to build out an infrastructure to make sure we can protect the homeland. We have not seen an attack another near the significance of 9 11 since then. And in many ways, thats going to be the same exact thing that were going to have do in the aftermath of covid19. Were going to have to make sure its not just a plan you put on a shelf. Its not something we forGet, but that we are building in Pandemic Resiliency and protections and preparedness into every aspect of the government, and we know we are capable of this. We know we are. But it has to take strategy. Not just writing a check, and certainly not just no matter how large that onetime check, this is i remain today more confident that america is the greatest nation in the history of the world, and we are capable of so much, but only, yes, when we can look long term, when we can invest strategically, not just monetarily. You served in afghanistan and that is a country thats returned to Center Stage in the headlines in recent weeks. I want to Get your thoughts in terms of how the evacuation went, how its been handled, and are there people over there who you knew who had struggled to Get out or who you know might still be there . First and foremost, President Biden made the right decision, a courageous decision. There was a bipartisan decision around americas longest war at this point was untenable and needed to end, and there was no pretty easy way to Get that done. There was no absolutely not. Now, in the face of that you see two different camps, right . You have folks who say, i agreed when President Trump did it. Now i dont like it. With bind, theyre absolute frauds. Then you see this rise in other folks who are calling for perpetual war. Many have been on this program or this network, and theyre absolutely flawed in their theory of national security. Theyre saying this could have been like japan on korea. No. What this was like is like being in vietnam. Was there potentially a better way or inevitable, what weve seen in the past with Whi Special Immigrant Visas were issued. There was underlying intelligence here that was incredibly flawed. But lets look at that intelligence for a moment, do you think that was the first time intelligence was flawed in afghanistan . The absolute errors of that intelligence, which is no fault of our intelligence organizations. Reflects the absolute futile nature of this conflict in the first place. So certainly we have to take a step back, think about what could have gone better. But on a deeper level here, we shouldnt confuse leaving afghanistan with a commitment to naive isolationism. We must still engage the world and we must still maintain the capacity to reach any individual quickly who has any intent of harming the homeland. M. , nicholas johnson. Good morning. Good morning. What is the axios one big thing for today . Todays one big thing is a new focus on states by democrats. Democratic activists are trying to push the party to do more of a focus for the midterm elections next year on state and local governments, particular focus on state legislatures, theyre driven to think by recent actions in, for example, georgia and Texas On Voting Rights and abortion rights. Which highlights the lack of power democrats have versus republicans. Nationwide republicans have a majority of the senates and house in the states. They control the house, governorship in most states. That gives Republicans Policy Power on the state level. Which democrats are hoping to push back on. Also Coronavirus And Pandemic restrictions. Theyre telling us they want to up the game on candidates of color. If you look at the state legislatures, democrats have a thursday of their members in the states are color, for republicans just 3 and democrats think that could be a great advantage for them recruiting candidates and Getting folks to the polls. Activists we point to show that candidates of Color Drive people to the polls. Dont just focus on the midterm races on the House And Senate on a federal level keep your eyes on the legislative races in the states. Thats a Big Push for democrats as they look to gain ground on republicans. That has been a big focus which has led to a majority in a lot of states. Obviously a lot of elections are going to be won or lost in terms of how officials are judged in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic and where we stand next year. I know axios spoke to dr. Anthony fauci. What did he say in terms of where we are right now in terms of the Covid Infection Rate . Were about 10 times worse than we should be. The Case Rate of 160,000 a week, way too high. We should be a tenth of that. Our new map is up again, another grim week. Case rates continuing to rise, in mississippi, louisiana, arkansas, those states doing poorly. Overall seeing, like dr. Fauci said, pacing far worse than we should be and seeing that translate into polls. In governors where the states are performing poorly, for example, desantis rates are slipping. Another huge Me Trick thats important to look at, is hospitalizations and deaths. Those are still high in a lot of cases driving. And a key metric is hospitalization rates for children, those are up as high as 20, 25 in some states because vaccinations are lower for children and kids under 12 cant be vaccinated, thats a worrisome Me Trick. Weve seen a regional divide on the pandemic. Are we seeing rises in the Northeast Or West with higher Vaccination Rates . No. Those are looking great not great. But the rates Areally Onner in those states where theres a high vaccination rate. In new england, northeast, sometimes those rates are great. Out west, in california, doesnt mean its over, california, Los Angeles is doing a Vaccination Mandate for schoolteachers in in the larger School District in the nation, those states are not letting their guard down but overall better than the central and south states.
