This is about voter integrity. I would be astonished if a law like this not challenged in court. We see a law happens when ever a law like this passed. No one is eligible to vote would be denied the opportunity to vote. The law disproportionately affect people of color. The governor signs the law mostly surrounded by white men, surprise, surprise. S the this is the same law texas democrats fled the state to try to block. The law also limits local control over control over elections and limits voting assistance such as helping able people to vote. Widespread Voter Fraud does not exist. Even Trump Administration found no fraud in the 2020 election. This is part of Donald Trumps big Lie Use to justify Voter Suppression. All this creating unequal americas when it comes to Voting Rights. This year, at least 18 states enacted 30 different laws restricting access to the Ballot Box. Tonight there is growing pressure on democrats to act on the federal level. What can be done and what is being talked about right now in washington with the biden administration about how we can basically save texas . Well, let me say there is a bill made sponsor in the senate to codify roe v. Wade. In terms of Voting Rights, we are continuing to try to Get the two democrats to agree to suspend the filibuster. The Texas Case is another reason to suspend the filibuster. The argument of once republicans Get in charge, they have been ruming in the minority already for too long. That argument does not hold weight. We have to use the power while we have it. I am very helpful. I remember John Mccaa doing thumbs down. Public pressure are not going to assault in the capitol, not on January 6th but a sustained effort from people will ultimately Get us across that t threshold. We have Senaor Sinema doing a thumbsdown but has not been the right vote, yet. Wendy davis, what is this like on the ground . There were so many fights and the whole country saw the ridiculous lines to vote in texas. How are your average citizens in austin and houston and dallas, how are they responding to this ridiculous law by the governor . We recognize exactly whats happening here. These laws are a way to try to maneuver around the changing electorate rather than trying to solve any problem of fraud. Our own Secretary Of State came forward after this election which by The Way Donald Trump won by 9 points in our state to say that we have had a safe and secure election. She was pretty quickly removed from her position. Shes a gubernatorial appointee. People are ready to fight. We know that because we lost the protection of the voting Rights Act Preclearance provision. The lost of those protections and we are going to do everything we can to support the efforts this wonderful congresswoman and others in congress who are fighting to make sure Voting Right protection are put in place. I want to follow up, i think this is a d. C. Conversation. It is a political science conversation. I think you are in the best position to answer this for us tonight. I believe texas is probably, probably a purple state if people were allowed to vote. You are there on the ground, is this being done . Is abbott able to pass these kinds of laws because the majority of texans are comfortable with this kind of Voter Suppression . Do you think it is to counter act actual trends in the state which may put someone like him or a Ted Cruz one day at risk at the Ballot Box . This measure is deeply unpopular in texas. A recent poll as many as 80 of texans say they believe the election here is safe and secure and they do not want to see Voter Suppression efforts put in place. This is not a situation where a governor is reacting to what the majority in our state wants. Hes reacting in a way to protect and support his own political ambition and to maintain the stronghold that the republicans have had in the state over redistricting and their ability to pass the kinds of laws like the Senate Bill 8 antiAbortion Law that they just passed again. Again, deeply unpopular law than most people living in our state. Professor murray, a lot of people watching now. There is some hyperbolic reference in texas, people are comparing it to the Hand Maids tale. There are people who sees nothing but the gloom and doom. I am not a lawyer. Legally, what are the chances of the federal government or any of these local lawsuits be able to not just overturn or diminish this law that abbott just signed but set the stage for this not to happen again sometimes right before next falls elections . Jason, it is important to understand the limits of law. Will law play a role here . Surely it will. It is clear that this law, sb8 violates the constitution. It was drafted for the purpose of evading federal Court Review and having it being a adjudicat. It is some what susceptible to political pressure or at least mindful of those pressures. The law takes a long time. It is going to be a while before a challenge makes its way into the states system. It does not matter because this law was drafted purposely to ensure that it would go into effect and it will cobble in texas. Thats whats going to happen. Even if this law is later declared unconstitutional, you cant unring this bell. We saw this in hb2. Which is the law that Senator Davis stood on the house to combat when it was being passed back in 2013. When that law went into effect, it Shutter Abortion in texas. When it was later declared unconstitutional by the united states supreme court, those clinics did not reopen. If something Gets shuttered, it is likely to stay shuttered and thats the point. I want to talk about the ridiculous nature of some of these Abortion Laws. We have a list here, corporate contributions to the sponsors of texas Abortion Law. We have Charter Communications and at T And Usa today and comcast, congresswoman moore, if there was a boycott. If there was social media attention, if there were a national campaign to call these kinds of sponsors and say hey, you should not be giving money to politicians to support these kinds of laws. Does it have impact on sitting politicians anymore or some of these people are so in the tank on this sort of maga believe from repressing women that even if they lost money, it would not matter . Well, you know thanks for asking that question, jason. I think money has too much influence in politics. I do think many of these political action committees really reflect the perspective and the views of the workers in those companies. 80 americans dont believe taking a womans right to choose a way and they certainly dont believe taking us back to a time when women were going for unsafe procedures, and they certainly and i dont know why you are so reluctant to compare it to the Taliban Or Something else, i mean i think it is so hypocritical to talk about women and our vigilantes in the streets and offering them 10,000 for womens care. This is barbaric in many ways. It is reminiscent of our cave days. This is a thing. I think it is important, one for a lack of a better word, the taliban is more efficient in all of their terribleness. It is important that we sensor people who are causing danger to women. How might something like this be enforced . If i were to drive a friend to Get an Abortion And Someone sued me, would i Get a public defender . How does it work in texas . The whole point of this private Enforcement Mechanism was to avoid federal Court Review, when Abortion Laws passed, a lot of states trying to pass these heartbeat bills, usually the Attorney General or the department of health. When that happens, you can sue that State Official and technically a Federal Court will enjoy it and preventing it from going into effect. The Name Of The Game is to allow the law going into effect, it will never come back even it is later and validated. They prohibited the state from enforcing this law entirely and deputize individual texans to bring private causes of actions to civil suits or quote on Quote Aid or abet, it could be the Lyft Driver or it could be someone in california who donates to the little Fund Or Abortion funds. Democrats have huge advantage in terms of bronze members here in california. What is perhaps a little worrisome for california is that there is been a lot of big ones among voters and a lot of voters dont know this is happening and many young voters have not return here ballots and so Thats Something hes going to be paying attention to political analysts. Even if he does make it oit of the recall with his job, those are Things Hell be looking at next year especially. I am thinking about this also. The idea that this is now happening a second time to a democratic governor of california. And so that system is popular among California Voters. I think there is going to be some discussion of the disconnect of what California Voters see and The Way that actually works which is the people with the most money can happen to the most motivated voter bases. I think Thats Something you see here. Republicans in this race, conservatives, people who are frustrated with Mask Mandates and restrictions and frustrated with Governor Newsom for a variety of reasons are motivated to vote. The rest of californians may not know this is happening even if they support Governor Newsom or think hes done a good job.
