Americans as Unemployment Benefits to protect workers at the height of this pandemic expire today. 7. 5 million people are set to lose their jobless benefits this week. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh Today saying states can choose to use other funds to extend those benefits. Weve allowed governors across the country if they need to to look at using Cares Money excuse me, Rescue Money if they need to. The rate is different all across the country. Its about how do we continue to get the economy back and running. Meanwhile millions struggling to find work. Many will soon face the reality of losing their housing as the Supreme Court struck down president Bidens Eviction Mary tore yum extension. Lets talk about this. Marie ya, her memoir is once i was you, and back with us, susan del percio. Im going to start with you. Finally ive been getting out and about. I was in arizona, mississippi where the Delta Variant is just on fire. Im thinking about the people most affected and the fact that they dont have a Safety Net. I think one of the things we have to realize about the united states of america, the most advanced country is keeping things going. Its community efforts, especially if theyre going to lose these Unemployment Benefits or theres a possibility of eviction. Its a particular moment where its like neighbors helping neighbors, but to me the problem is how does that jive with the fact that were the most advanced country in the world. All of our people are suffering right now. You wrote the book on it. How do we fix it . Before you tell me your solution, hopefully everybodys listening in case you have a good one. I want to play a piece of sound we have from someone who wassal depending on these jobless benefits, whose life was drastically changed after losing a job. You dont ever anticipate it happening. 18 months ago our family was thriving, a twoearner home, both of us working successful. This pandemic has been a Rude Awakening for us and has significantly altered the path of her life in a way we didnt anticipate. Its been a Rude Awakening for so many americans. And maria is right. There is no Safety Net for so many americans, but this is not something new. The disparity that we have in our country right now financially has been front and center, especially during this pandemic and the recent natural disasters weve experienced with the flooding. How do we fix it . What do we do . Well, one thing we have to do obviously and maria is absolutely right is strengthen our Safety Net. This is where the bill that is winding its way through congress, the 3. 5 becomes so critical. Its not as if the pandemic is going away or pandemics are going away. People need help in this 3. 5 trillion bill. They need help with child care, with a Safety Net that is a stronger Safety Net. People need to make sure that children, in fact, All Of Us have a responsibility to make sure Child Poverty drops. Its all in this bill. I think the real question is there enough urgency . Do people care enough . Is there enough sense that ting is right to get the bill enacted along with the Infrastructure Bill . Both are critical. Do you think people do care enough . I think people care enough, yasmin, but ive been around for too many years to believe that its easy to get stuff through washington. Youve got right now the public is not only distracted by the pullout of afghanistan, the administration is distracted, but also the democrats have not had a chance to explain to the public whats in this bill. I know Bernie Sanders is out there and some other democrats are out there. If they know it and they understand it, they will support it. And if they support it, chances are their representatives or their senators, particularly senators will vote for it, but there is that barrier of understanding and that barrier of getting understanding out there of whats in this bill. You said the key phrase that chances are right. I go back to the person i talked with and thats Joe Manchin. We know where he stands. A lot of democrats worry that hes not going to get on board. You are advising republicans and democrats right now, specifically democrats what do you tell them and how to get the Reconciliation Bill across the finish line. Yasmin, what I Susan first, and then, robert, aisle come back to you. What Joe Manchin has said is he has a hard type wrapping his head around the 3. 5 trillion number. Thats not to say he may not be happy with 2. 5 trillion. But theyve already lets be clear. Theyve already significantly reduced the Price Tag that Joe Biden the president put out in the first place. On top of that, they significantly reduced the Price Tag when it came to infrastructure as well. Important to note that. You full well know, susan del percio, because you know politics quite well, dell carats are not going to get onboard with that, and then they will have a whole other problem. They will, unless Theres Something else. We dont know what happens behind the scenes. I think its possible maybe they go for 2. 5, 2. 3 million and Joe Manchin allows a carveout for Voting Rights. There are a lot of moving parts. Frankly, this is where President Biden excels in moving pieces around the board. So i do think Theres Something to be said that there will be some kind of compromise where everyone can live with it, but lets not also forget right now Joe Biden needs a win, and thats what the administration is going to be focused on. I do not think democrats will allow democrats to fall apart and offer nothing. At the last effort when it comes to his domestic policy, Joe Biden may also have to come in and say, you know what . Its time to get rid of the flib, because, frankly, yasmin, the republicans will do it the moment they get power back, and as a result, i think it says but so far we have not heard that. I do Think Biden has the ability to move things around. If democrats need to be motivated, heres what you can be motivated by. I won the minority, i couldnt get the agenda through, and now we get rid of the filibuster. Maria hinojosa, how do you think they can do it . That to me sounds far out. Im just putting that out there. Look. Listen. Anything is possible. Maria, weigh in for me first. Heres what i think. Okay. Were making some generalizations. The people really would like to see much more i dont know. Susan is going to agree with this, but robert will. Radically more progressive. So the kind of chipping away makes it difficult. On the other Hand Voting rights is essential. Otherwise this democracy will fall apart. I think what needs to happen with the democrats, they need to maintain control of the narrative, do not allow the republicans to take control of the narrative as theyve been trying to again, and you have to be more radical. Again, i think thats whats going to lead joe bide on the make sure that he gets the immigrant vote, make sure he gets the Latino And Latina vote, which is the second largest voting block. Theyre expecting the president to react more radically in the face of ida, climate change, afghanistan, refugees, texas with the Supreme Court and women being denied access to reproductive rights. People want to see a much more progressive, much more progressive, which does make it difficult for a kind of middleoftheroad democrats, but thats where i think that they lose. Robert, you talk about the fact that Voting Rights is correlated with the economy. Weigh in on that for me, first and foremost. And if Bernie Sanders were sitting Thon Panel that would be great, by the way he would say, listen, 3. 5 trillion is not enough to do what we need to do across the board. Bernie sanders actually agreed to 3. 5, but that was much less than Joe Biden originally wanted. I think the problem here for the democrats on The Hill is that the window of opportunity is closing very rapidly. I mean, youve got nancy pelosi, september 27th, is the deadline she agreed to for putting Infrastructure Bill before the house. But there are a lot of Progressive Democrats in the house who say, no, we dont want to vote on the Infrastructure Bill separate from the 3. 5 trillion social Safety Net bill. And so its all going to come to a head very, very, very rapidly, and Joe Manchin and Bernie Sanders are going to have to work this out with Joe Biden. I absolutely agree Joe Biden is an inside player. Hes going to be working with manchin and sanders. The thing that worries me most is Voting Rights. As you said, Voting Rights is a key. Voting rights is not in the 3. 5 trillion. It need as carveout from the filibuster, and thats going to be the biggest fight from the fall. A couple of things you said i want you to weigh in on. Do you think because of this deadline, do you think they should be voting in tandem on Infrastructure And Reconciliation or separate . Youre asking me . Yes, robert. Sorry. I think they have to vote in tandem. Thats what she promised the progressives, and she said there would be a vote. She said to the socalled Mod Squad on The Hill, there would be a vote by the 27th, but its going to be at the same time as the vote on the 3. 5 trillion. So shes got to somehow have enough of a bill in front of her to put them both before the house at exactly the same time. Its going to be a very rough 3. 5 weeks. Another followup i have for you robert, do you think the Reconciliation Bill, sfraurks could significantly reduce, make a dent in the economic disparity we have in the country so americans are not suffering the way they are right now . Do you think theres a real big case for that . It would make a big difference. We know the refundable benefit brings down the Child Pofferty Rate by half, 50 , in this year, but it needs to be made permanent. This is very small, but it would be very, very significant. Imagine bringing Child Poverty down by half. We also need to pay for it. Thats the other part of the equation. In this bill are Tax Increases on the wealthy. Theyre lobbying washington like crazy. They dont want Tax Increases, but its necessary, its fair, and it must be done. Yeah. You have billionaires trying to go to space when you have americans who dont even have a belt to keep their pants on. Last question for you, maria. Do you feel like americans really have a grasp of whats inside these bills . No, not at all. Yeah. In fact, what i think is worrisome, in the last administration, there was so much bluster, people were paying attention all the time. Now people are like were in this plateau of the pandemic that wont go away. Desperation. Robert was right at the top. How do you get people to understand and grasp this. Its very difficult. Theres a lot of suffering going on right now. Thats what were talking about. Im not sure how were going to make it through except for helping one another, which is kind of desperate. I was going to say, its very hard to grasp something like this that you know will help you when youre suffering so much. When i was Report Tong Storm last week, walking into someones home when they dont know where theyre going to live, this is something i need to call my congressman up. Its hard. Robert reich, Maria Hinojosa, susan de percio. Thank you very much. New details on trump staffers going under oath. And how one town became the Battle Center of a critical race series. Stay with us. Stay with us crepe corrector lotion. Only from gold bond. You dont get much time for yourself. So when you do, make It Count with crest prohealth. The probe is heating up as Cy Vance prepares for his requirement this coming december. The New York times is reporting that the prosecutors are weighing taxrelated Crime Problems to Matthew Calamari Sr. The executive used to be trumps bodyguard and last week they may have gotten a little closer to evidence they need because his son, Matthew Calamari Jr. Testified under oath before a Grand Jury. His testimony would be, quote, useful. Take a listen. Calamaris kid, yeah, hes going to be useful, and he can talk about his own perks and perhaps his fathers perks and maybe he has more information about donald. So im encouraged by it. Father and son saying theyve done nothing wrong and they have nothing to hide. Welcome to you both. Thanks for joining us. Everyone has been talking about your pin. Thanks for joining us. I want to get the news of these possible criminal charges. What does this say about the criminal probe right now . Its still a hot investigation. Its active. Its ongoing. There are those in the Trump Sphere and family who were doing the Victory Lap when the first set of charges were announced. Clearly thats is not going to be the last set of charges. They are turning up the heat and, frankly, going after Calamaris Son is a pretty hyperaggressive move. I remember being interviewed 20 years ago. I was asked would i go after a parent against a child or a child against a parent. A tough one. Theyre going gangbusters, pursuing all avenues. The reports are Calamari Jr. And the cfo or the controller, rather, were both in, both apparently have information about Calamari Sr. And certainly against others, and so, you know, oftentimes prosecutors will pick off the low Hanging Fruit and they will try and cooperate up folks who have actionable information against those who are more senior within the organization. Here certainly that could be Calamari Sr. It could certainly be weisselberg. And, of course, there are other other targets as well its live case. Jill wine banks, does it seem as if Calamari Jr. Is the low Hanging Fruit, and at what point do we get to the fruit on top of the tree . Well, of course, the top of the tree to me is Donald Trump, and that will take more evidence than probably Calamari Jr. Has. We dont know how directly he is connecting to knowledge of Donald Trump. So well have to wait and see on that. But i think danya is absolutely correct. I think theyll be hoping to wrap it up while Cy Vance is still District Attorney. He did not run for reelection. Theres a new District Attorney starting in december. They spent a lot of resources going to the Supreme Court twice to get Tax Records of Donald Trump. They have already indicted allen weisselberg, the cfo. Its possible theyll indict the coo, who is Calamari Sr. , and i think theres a lot going on. When you look at the case, people have said, oh, its just a benefits case, Fringe Benefits that werent recorded. This isnt that. This is a 15year fraud. Its a conspiracy, double bookkeeping. They kept fraudulent books. So its much more than that. And everybody says, including you had Barbara Rez commenting there, and she has always said nothing happens at Trump Organizations that Donald Trump didnt know about. So the chances are he knew what was going on. He wrote the checks for weisselbergs grandchildrens tuition. He certainly knew about that. Thats why we have this case going. What leads do you believe Calamari Sr. Could be in dieted months ahead of Cy Vances retirement . The Evidence Weve seen so far suggests he got the same Apartment And Car benefits the way weisselberg got and reported them in the same way. I dont know that yet. I havent seen his tax returns. I dont know how he reported it. I dont know how the company counted for it. I know they accounted for Weisselbergs Fringe benefits even though i said its much more than a Fringe Benefits case. It seems likely hes a target. The fact he wasnt subpoenaed to testify, its because in New York they have a very strange rule that isnt common. That is if you testify before the Grand Jury, you are automatically imeunized and cannot be prosecuted for anything you testify about. So you dont want to put anyone before the Grand Jury that you think you might indict. And so the fact that the senior Calamari Wasnt put before the Grand Jury even though he likely as coo has much more knowledge makes me believe he is the target. Danya, jill talked about Cy Vance and his retirement. Weve known about it for a year. The likely replacement is al breck. I want to take a listen to his answer when asked about the Trump Vote i led the team that held trump and his children accountable for the trump foundation. I go where the facts go. I do know in complex cases, ive been brought in to try complex cases. Its important to have consistency and continuity. How does that complicate things if it changes hands . I agree with jill. Hell wrap it up before he leaves office. Its been a Legacy Case for him. Hes presided over it for two years. I think hell feel responsible to wrap up the charges or at least get them in pretty good shape before he leaves office. I will say ive known alvin for many, many years as a friend and also as a state prosecutor, its as he said. Hell follow the evidence wherever it goes. Hes dogged, hes meticulous, hes smart. If its not wrapped up, he will look it over very closely himself, scrutinize the evidence, and he will go exactly where the facts and the evidence and witnesses take him. So if its not wrapped up, it will be in very good happeneds with alvin brag brcz. Thanks for joining us. Coming up, ms. Attorney general garland announcing the full support of federal Law Enforcement for Abortion Clinics under attack, and a Texas Judge issuing a temporary Restraining Order against an antiabortion group. Meanwhile Lyft And Uber vowing to cover legal fees for any driver sued under the new law. And godaddy pulling the plug on an antiabortion website that allows people to report Anonymous Tips on abortion, just the latest on the texas escalating fight over abortion issues. Some republicans speaking out against this law as well. This bill in texas seems to be a little bit extreme with this problem of bounties for people that turn in somebody that drove someone to an Abortion Clinic. For me im prolife, but what i dont like to see is this idea of every citizen being able to tattle, sue an oober Uber Driver. At least six States Expression Interest passing similar laws with all eyes on the Supreme Courts conservative justices. Joining me now is irwin carmen, coauthor of notorious Rbg And Erica nancy smith. Welcome to you both, ladies. I want to play this. If im beaten and raped in the state of texas, i have to give birth to the baby of my rapist. If im raped by my father, uncle, or brother, i have to give birth. This is to draconian. This is madness. The same people who have been protesting and screaming my body my choice when it comes to the Covid Vaccine are now saying i dont have any control over my own body. Shame on the men and women who passed this Law And Shame on anyone who sits in silence while women suffer and die because of it. Irwin carmone, i want to start with this one. That was a really emotional ad. It struck me, had ruth Bader Ginsburg not passed away, we would be having a very different conversation today. Yeah. I mean thats a painful question about what would have happened because, of course, Justice Ginsburg spent a lot of time on the court dissenting, including Me Abortion cases. So its not clear whether chief justice John Roberts would have voted the way he did. But chief justice John Roberts has always been deeply posed to abortion, so in my mind the shift happened when antony kennedy retired. I think he was a defend Ore F Abortion rights and when le retired, it actually changed the vote count. That said every vote on the Supreme Court counts and at the very least, if Justice Ginsburg were still with us and were about to mark the Oneyear Anniversary of her death, im certain she would have been robustly defending the rights of texans to have dominion over their own Body And End pregnancy if she sees fit. For us, its a tragedy shes not with us. I was speaking with Maria Hinojosa last hour. Can we all but assume at this point we know how the vote would fall . Yes. Thats why President Biden has to fix the Supreme Court. The republicans stole a Seechlt Gorsuch is sitting there from obama. They put amy coney barrett there during an election. Voting had actually started. Kavanaugh, an accused rapist, credibly accused rapist, they have packed the court, and we have to fix it. We have a radical Supreme Court beholding to very right wing ideologues, and the idea that they would let this Law Sit there and not stop it is outrageous. The majority said it was novel and complex. Its not novel or complex. Le its much like the Ku Klux klan. Bounty hunters were allow god into states and steal slaves and bring them back to the south and after the civil war, our congress passed the Ku Klux Klan Act that gives you the right to violate the rights of others. Thats exactly what is happening here. Its not complex. And the Supreme Court has ruled twice that that is acting under color of State Law if the State Law gives private rights of action that help you violate other citizens rights. So its really an outrageous decision and its alive. Its kind of novel that theyre using it for abortion, but even in 1973, the Supreme Court rules that a State Cant Delegate Veto Power over abortions to individuals, so its not that novel, and it just shows how right winged the court has become. Aside from fixing the court as you put it, nancy, how do you challenge this Texas Law . Since they stopped a hearing thats supposed to take place today, thank god we have garland in the department of justice. Have to criminally prosecute under the Face Act, which is an act that protects womens rights to actually go to an Abortion Provider and get medical care for reproductive decisions that are supposed to be private. So the Face Act should be very, very vig us areally enforced. And entities that go into court and try to stop providers and Uber Drivers and Friends And Family who support a womans rights to make her own medical decisions, they should be criminally charged under the Face Act. Not just civilly. We need to fight this as hard as we can because people are ruthless and theyll do anything. If youve been near an Abortion Clinic recently and i have its so Abuse Toiv women, whats happening there. They had bright lights out the minute this became law on september 1st, looking into womens cars. How do you know how pregnant a woman is, by the way . Most women dont know theyre pregnant by six weeks, but how do you know that . Does the law allow them to violate hipaa and get womens medical records . As was pointed out in that wonderful piece, these are people who say you Cant Force me to wear a mask to stop a pandemic, so its very difficult how were going to fix this. Irwin, go ahead. So one of the issues with the Face Act with regard to the Texas Law is merrick garlands duties are limited. A lot of places have closed their doors or theyre afraid of getting sued. Theyre no longer performing abortions after six weeks some of some of the statements of support that you cited in the introduction of this segment, theyre sort of nibbling at the edges of what this law is about because an Uber Driver cant be charged or anyone whos aidening and Abending Cannot be charged unless someone is getting an abortion after six weeks. And the providers in texas, at least getting an abortion in a surreptitious way is going to increase under the law and hopefully people can do so safely. But right now if youre an Abortion Provider in texas, youre not providing abortions after six weeks. We dont even have to get those Bounty Hunters. They dont have to get those Bounty Hunters on the trails of individuals seenging medical care because theyve already won by shutting down abortions after six weeks. The Face Act may be really important in other states that are not texas or the clinics that are still provided limited services up to six weeks, but we know what happens in texas is not going to stay in texas. Individuals are already seeking Abortion Care in states nearby, theyre going anywhere they can if they have the means to travel. At those clinics, we know every time an abortion is in the public eye, this is a daily reality of clinics that can always get worse. The violence and intimidation outside clinics accelerates. Its already reported. Its already a scary situation to walk in. Individuals are women and other people getting abortions are trying to get their medical care and theyre screened at and theres expletives and theres violence. To the extent, its great. It wont make a difference to the fact you cannot get an abortion at a clinic after six weeks in texas. This conversation needs to keep going. Irin carmon and. Thank you. Trump on mt. Rushmore. This push intensified in the wake of the george floyd murder, now leading to a backlash on the right with gop lawmakers introducing dozens of bills attacking socalled critical Race Theory. In some towns, teachers and School Officials have been fired for Teaching Materials that address americas racial past. The town of South Lake, texas, has become an epicenter of this debate, and its the subject of northbounds newest podcast, South Lake. Trors in South Lake after teens posted a racist video. My children were told Rosa Parks is dead, you all have to sit in the back of the bus. This smalltown fight ignited a national firestorm. Critical Race Theory. This is southlake. The third episode of the podcast dropped today, highlighting how political figures like allen West Work behind the scenes for a political takeover. If youre not invested in making sure that your children are getting a Quality Education instead of an indoctrination, and the way that that continues phenomenon we dont get control of these school boards. If youre disarmed, youre a subject you. Can be here in texas. If you dont understand that, go back to where you came from. All right. Joining me now, antonia helton. Im so happy to have you on. This podcast is so incredible. I was taken the moment i first started listening to it. Its so brilliant, so needed, and so many of my friends that ive been hearing about this podcast reminds them of their own school experiences, microaggressions, things they put in the backs of their minds that they never really realized what was being said about them. A couple of things. What do you want people to take away from southlake . First, yasmin, thanks so much. Thats why my cohost and i set out to do this work. As people have watched this fight over critical Race Theory, which is really a tugofwar about The American story about what we want to believe about our identity, what parts of history we want to be comfortable, southlake was at the center of this. Their fight started in 2018 before critical Race Theory was a phrase people knew about. It came about from a Video Clip you showed here. In 2018, these issues werent politicized. When the plan is in place after george floyds murder, all of this has become politicized. People say the story of southlake is a story of their town. Even if theyre far away from texas, these same issues of Diversifying Towns and trying to grapple with the real of how different people came to the country, what it means to be american for them, and having those messy and uncomfortable conversations is happening anywhere, and its comfortable for them to hear, how did we get here. I have a good Friend Whos Texting me constantly because its happening in her town. Ice trouble ling to her and shes wondering what to do. The people getting hurt the most are the teachers, the educators, and the kids. The kids. Antonia, just quickly, what was the most troubling thing you found in looking at southlake . When you look at a lot of the early Reporting And Talk to folks in town, they center the voices of local politicians like allen west, powerful parents, well known people. So there are all of these adults fighting over these issues. If theres know Diversity Plan in place t people who will be injure ready the children. Theyre excluded from the conversation and directly discounted at times. Try to do the opposite in our reporting. Antonia hylton, its so good. Congratulations, my friend. Its great conversation.
