Administration, as we head into the final months of 2021. Reproductive freedom advocates, of Womens Health Care workers, are grappling. With how to protect women in the wake of the Supreme Courts audacious refusal, to block a lot, that all but bans abortion in americas second largest state. Late on friday, a Texas Judge granted a restraining order. Blocking the states largest Anti Abortion group, that would be texas right to life. From using the Abortion Ban to sue planned parenthood. But its New York times reported, the orders reaches narrow, and it is set to expire on september 17th. That is 11 days from today. Its a very small in very temporary, victory as abortion advocates assess their limited options, to fight back against the ban. One of the most effective strategies, will No Doubt be public opinion. And ads like this one from bestselling Author And Activist don winds. Lower likely a preview of whats to come in terms of motivating women, and democratic voters to activism. Watch. If im v. In and raped in this state of texas, i have to give birth to the baby of my rapist. If i am raped by my father, my brother, my uncle and get pregnant in the state of texas, i have to give birth to the baby of my family abuser. This new law is soldier kony, and that i can be prosecuted for having an abortion, and so can my doctors, Friends And Family who advised me. Or even the Uber Driver who simply drives me to the clinic. This is madness. The same people who have been protesting and screaming, my body my choice when it comes to the covid vaccine, are now saying, i dont have any control over my own body. Shame on the men and women who pass this law. And Shaman Anyone who sits in silence, where women suffer and die because of. Its that ad, you just side chunk of, it the whole ad has had more than 2 Million views. It is likely to represent the tip of the spear, in terms of activating many of the same voices of people who spilled into the streets of the nations capital, and cities all across the country. In 2016 and 2017, that after Donald Trumps election and inauguration. But so, far the silence from corporate america, on the texas Abortion Law, has been deafening. New york times reached out to two dozen major companies, many of which have taken a stand on issues like racial justice, and Voting Rights. That either declined to comment or refused to ply to them. The times adds quotes, among those that would say, that would not say something, were mcdonalds. A sponsor of international womens day. Pwc, a major supporter of Diversity And Inclusion efforts and Cocacola And Delta airlines. Which led a corporate backlash last year against a restrictive Voting Bill in georgia, where they have their headquarters. Many of the biggest employers in texas including at t, oracle, Mckesson And Philip 66, declined to comment. Even companies that are quick to speak up on social issues, including patagonia and levis, did not say anything about the new law. And the Washington Post is reporting on the tiny handful of companies, that have taken action in light of the texas Abortion Ban. Quote, Uber And Lyft said they would cover legal fees for drivers sued under the law. Meanwhile the web hosting provider Go Daddy told texas right to life to find a different provider. For Pro Life whistleblower. Com. A site that invites supporters of the law to report people who continue to help women obtain abortions. Meanwhile, Anti Abortion activists are seizing their momentum. Seeing the supreme Courts Refusal to block a texas law, as a reason to launch a new wave of Abortion Bans, all across this country. Nbc news reports that quote, the Ripple Effect after texass highly restrictive antiAbortion Law, went into effect immediate. Within 24 hours, legislatures and at least six states, florida, arkansas, indiana, mississippi, North Dakota and south dakota, expressed interest in introducing similar legislation. All of this, bringing us back to our original question. What are democrats going to do to protect Abortion Rights . President biden is already promised a quote, whole of Government Response to the law. And already summer laying out what that should look like. In an oped in the Washington Post, law professor lawrence, urges doj to prosecute vigilantes. Who used the laws to sue thy neighbor to go after anyone who helps a woman get an abortion. Tribe writes this, the Texas Legislator and five Supreme Court justices have joined forces to a visceral Womens Abortion rights. The legislature, by creating and justice is by leaving in place, a system of private bounties designed to intimidate all who could help women exercise the right to choose. But the federal government has, and should use, its own powers, including criminal prosecution, to prevent the law from being enforced and to reduce its chilling effects. The fight to protect Abortion Rights in america, it questions about the political potency, of republicans beginning the process, of overturning roe v. Wade is where we start this hour. Senator Claire Mccaskill is here. Also joining us is alexei my cabin, political report of cassius, and matt millers the former Chief Spokesman for the Justice Department. Lucky for us all three msnbc contributors, clare what do you make of the state of affairs here on this Labor Day . Well, the Supreme Court has done something, that is far beyond what i am managing they would do. I would worried that roe v. Wade standing in light of the case of mississippi that theyre going to hear in a few weeks. But the few weeks in the notion, the dark of night, they would bless this kind of statutory bs. Is really startling. Because make no mistake, they put a bow on a law, that says you no longer have to have standing, to bring a social grievance to court. All you have to do, is think youve got some kind of proof, that somebody intended to help somebody get an abortion. Imagine a mother, who is trying to help their 13 year old daughter, when she just found out that this daughter had been repeatedly raped by her boyfriend. Imagine her being the one, that is pulled into court, and is asked to pay money that clearly she would not have, and legal expenses she would not have. Just for trying to help her daughter out of his circumstances its very extreme. And i think its politically very bad for the republicans, that they have gone this far, in it appears theres no stopping this elements of the republican party, now with the democrats need to do is just fight back. Also make sure they elevate this issue so that every woman in america understands with these folks are doing. Clare, you have lived the potency of this extreme element of the republican party in front of voters and missouri. Can you talk a little bit more about where that line is for american voters, not just the folks we talk about, the right and left, but right in the middle . This is a majority, issue 60 plus percent of americans support abortions in most cases. This is not just 85 of abortions happen after six. Weeks this is a point where most women do not know they are pregnant yet. Theyve only missed one period. And even if they do, two weeks is not really the amount of time, especially in the dire circumstances we are describing, to make a plan and find a provider. Can you talk about the real world politics of it and the real World Tragedy whats gonna start happening in texas . This is a direct symptom of what is happened in our politics and that everyone is only talking to, listening to, hearing from, people they agree with. Our media has become so stratified that you can go hang out in the corner of social media, a corner of the internet, a corner of cable news, and just think everyone agrees with you. And the vast majority of americans would reject this law. The extreme nature of this law is what i believe 80 or plus with say, of course there should be an exception for rape and incest. And that was in fact the issue that got me reelected. I had an opponent who was so extreme on this issue that it frightened many republican women in the state to say, no, we are not crazy about her, but we are not going with this, guy hes two for extreme. Just know, nicole, the idea, this person, hood that this is going to be the result of what texas has done, no, it has already happened. That is the law in my state. If row falls, then immediately in missouri its a question of whether you can have an Envy Trio child. Even if you can get the morning after pill. Because the Minute Row falls in missouri, life and all things attributable to life no morning after pill, no unused embryos in vitriol fertilization, think of all the families who could not have children if we make ivf illegal. Clare, can i ask you a sensitive political question. Why does it feel like republicans with control of State Legislatures and many governorships are having more and more malevolent impact on american life than democrats with control of the house, the senate, and the White House . I think its because, nicole, the legislatures that are doing this are very lopsided. They are not anywhere near 50 50. They are dominated most often in Veto Proof Majority with republicans. So the fight in those states, for a state legislative seats, its all about who wins a primary. Its not about those independent voters where you have to get into general. And that is the problem. What we have in washington, yes, we control it, but just by a hair. So all of the democrats, from very red places, from purple places, they are careful about calibrating what they are doing based on who they represent. Is that frustrating . Yes. Are there things that biden can do through doj . Of course there are. I think this law which, frankly, what was written to go after the Ku Klux klan because right now, the right to choose is a constitutional right according to roe v. Wade. That is the law of the land. Right, now anyone who could be brought up under this law that tried reference in the oped that you mentioned in the opening. So there are things the doj can do. I think they need to bring up the qualification of roe v. Wade on boats. We need to be aggressive but we also need to be realistic. This is about us winning elections. What they are doing in texas is going to help us win elections. I hope you are. Right, alexa so many of the stories from the weekend i want to go through all three of you. But i want to get your reaction first. Is this a Wake Up Call . Is this A Bridge Too Far . Tell me your thoughts and digesting this news. I think that clare is right, this is an issue that democrats wants to feel energized by and lead our base within the elections. Historically, you all know very well, Reproductive Rights and anti Abortion Stance has been something republicans have really relied on, even when it was not a mainstream issue, to seek Sub Port from their Base And Battlefront states. That something theyre going to try again. But democrats are seeing that this idea that we have all talked about so far, the fact that even with Donald Trump gone, trumpism remains. These trumpian,s state lawmakers, these republicans, who are pushing these restrictive draconian Abortion Rights even though Donald Trump is not at the helm. Theres a point in putting pro choice republicans democrats are going to bring up for the vote by the end of this month. So something i was thinking about, nicole, these house democrats, like under, Liam Val demings, who are running, who are going to be running in the statewide senate races and pennsylvania and florida, and if they are voting in favor of this act, it will be curious to see how republicans try to go after them for that vote theyre Gonna Take in the house as they are running and contentious statewide races already, now in addition to the abortion dynamics. Matt, i think what must be exasperating for democrats is this is about republicans as counter constitutional. They are the extremes. And i think that republicans and Pro Life activists have been successful at turning choice into a radical position. There is no scenario where that is plausible for anyone with a millimeter of information of what is happening in texas. I have two questions for. You won, where all of the nominees for the Supreme Court lying when they said they viewed roe as settled law . And to, what do you make of the small step that the Justice Department said they would take today. Basically saying that it would not tolerate violence against an one trying to obtain an abortion in texas . So with respect to the justices, lying, its one way to look at. It being very careful and promising but they are going to do is. Another i suspect that when we get to the end of not just this case but also the mississippi case, i never thought that the Supreme Court will come right out and reverse roe v. Wade but they will get it through a series of cases. This being the first one. The Mississippi Law that the court will take in this term. I suspect we will see a series of cases that bullet both the court to do the same thing unless the courts reform. With respect to the doj, the statement they put out today was a heartening one, an important, but it really related to physical violence, when people try to physically prevent people from accessing their constitutional right from getting and abortion from preventing them to go into a clinic, and its when they said that because every time this issue is in the news, violence does rise in clinics and the department has economic team but it doesnt really promised any new action with respect to the courts. I think the problem that we have here, the department does have limited ability here. Di think what really needs to happen here is we need to see a decrease in private litigants, operating in under as pursuing as many legal theories as possible and as many courts as possible, state and, federal so the department has a chance to come in and vote for legal reasons to get this line joined and for political reasons to raise the salient of this issue. Weve been discussing this, since your first question, abortion has always been an issue where american support the right to choose, but this aliens has been on the republican side. That needs to change. A law that is this extreme has the potential to change it. It has the potential of galvanizing americans to support abortion. Rights as clare said, i think very few people would support a law like this that criminalizes abortion even in cases of rape and incest. I think its just so disheartening for the women of texas to wait for that process. What matt is describing is a process similar to the legal challenges in the Rights Legislation where as we know from the Georgia Law can take years that to wind its way through. Clare, you and i were on for a couple of confirmations. I want to show you something that Senator Klobuchar said in the vein of retirements. I believe that if he is seriously considering retirement and he said he would do it based not only on his health but also on the future of the court, if this decision doesnt count for, that i dont. Does if hes going to do it, sooner rather than later. Again, as you know, that is not going to change the results, necessarily. At least, it doesnt put it at seven two. That was Senator Klobuchar when asked about Justice Breyer retiring while President Biden is in office. I want to bring up the Third Rail of all of the sacred not just democrats but also to anyone whos whether the feelings among democrats about justice Ginsburgs Decision not to retire under obama . It would be you would have to do something seriously to threaten me to get me to say anything bad about Justice Ginsburg, first of all. Im not asking you to say anything bad about her we wouldnt be when we be in this position if she . Retired obviously, if she had retired under a democratic president , we would not be in this position. If we have the majority in the senate, and which we did for a period of time, late in her life, and she was struggling with some chronic illnesses. But, like i said i think id rather focus on what Mitch Mcconnell did to block Merrick Garland and most importantly what kennedy did with his very strategic retirement in order to stack the court for a more conservative. You really, what we ought to focus on is this ridiculous hypocrisy about respecting precedent. This is 50 years of precedent in the court. 50 years not only did these five justices got 50 years, they did it in the dark, they did it with a couple of paragraphs, and they did it for a law that not only decimates roe, it doesnt it doesnt with fireworks. It does it in a way that absolutely bastard ices i dont even know if thats a word. But it does bad stuff to our civil Justice System because what they are doing is theyre creating a new thing in american law and that is, we are going to allow citizens to be vigilantes on social grievances. And of discussion. And that is the excuse they hid behind in not staying the law. It is nuts. That was barren. So i am sick of the federal society giving me any of this load of crap on how they respect president and how you cannot legislate from the bench. That is what these guys are doing right now. Alexei, to your point about trumpism, this really is twice impeached, disgraced Ex President s rising from the political grave and having his way with american life in 2020. One the reality, is whether we focus on Justice Breyer, and im sure that clare represents the vast majority of the views of democrats, or we pursue Mats Path which is litigation, there were women in Texas Today who feel like their lives are. Over some men to. Not all women seeking abortion are victims of incest or rape. Women have a right to abortion even though those tragedies are not would have come to pass. This is no longer the case for 85 of women seeking abortion in texas. What happens Here And Now for them . Its a frightening reality, as you, said their lives have completely changed almost overnight. And i think thats an important point to underscore, a lot of women who seek abortions are not in these tragic harrowing situations necessarily. Some women are trying to make whats considered to be a responsible, smart, financial decision, life decision, a decision with their partner, their doctor that they agonized over to get. Theyre so it is not an easy situation. And its not necessarily a case where people are forced into a decision to make an abortion. This is now treating abortion, or access to health, care as a crime. Not as a fundamental right as that women are afforded any longer in texas. Potentially moving forward in the state of mississippi. I think thats where youre going to see a lot of these political fights play out in the coming years to with a focus on Health Care. Democrats have consistently tried to expand access to Health Care, to lower Health Care costs. While republicans, of, course have tried to strike down the aca, they have tried to leave votes with pre existing conditions without coverage, and now they are restricting women from accessing Health Care in a different way im, in a way to make them feel less than. Matt, what is opaque to us in terms of what may be going on in the doj that might harden folks the . It has a lot of smart people who spent the week trying to find some creative answers here. But ultimately, the problem is, any solution that you come up with two this ruling ultimately fails with this against the same challenge. We have a supreme Court Majority that is hostile to a womans constitutional right to choose what to do with her own. Body and thats why theyre resisting. We can pass the congress, be puzzle awe. We will be struck. Down a Lower Court can come up with a ruling, it could be struck down by the Supreme Court. So as long as you dont address the fundamental problem, every other victory can be and pick one. So i Justice Ginsburg shouldve retired in 2013 or 2014 when democrats were urging her and the White House wanted her to. If she, had this Decision Wouldve gone another way. Justice breyer should retire now while there is still a democratic majority in the senate that can confirm his replacement. Democrats in the senate, this time, or next time we have unified control, we should reform the filibuster to guarantee the womans right to choose, which has been a constitutional line for 50 years now, is. Penalty Everything Else we talk about ultimately could be struck down by the supreme Court Majority and i suspect it will be unless we are not just principled but smart and strategic and how we approach the issue. I think that is the Bottom Line and i think we cannot lose side of our political analysis in the daily hell now that is, any woman who doesnt have this choice, available to. Her most tragically, young victims of incest or rape. But every woman in texas is a victim of all of that. Alexei, matt, thank you so much for starting us off. Clare is sticking with us for the. Our coming back, its been exactly eight months since the insurrection at the united states capitol. Gop leader Kevin Mccarthy continues to try to thwart the investigation. The committee is pressing. On the bipartisan leaders on that commission calling him out for a wet they say is his, quote, january six misinformation campaign. Plus, experts warn a catastrophic harm to our health. We will ask a lawmaker how d. C. Can finally get something done about climate. Change later on in the show, everything is bigger and it will turn out scarier in texas going all in serving up red need to the conservative base with new unpopular laws. That is frankly not the republican party i remember in the republican party i joined. If we are going to be in charge in pushing conspiracy and pushing division, and pushing, lies than the republican party should not have the majority. Who is going to tell him . With great power comes great responsibility of putting truth over conspiracy. That was Adam Kinzinger on his Partys Duty to openly and honestly resist the dismissal of Truth And Truth tellers. Like house minority Kevin Mccarthys Patel Or Tory threats against Tech Companies as by the January 6th select committee to present data. Which, Gop Lee are now seeking to double down with their own threats to these Tech Companies. And it is just the latest move from the Gop And Leader Kevin Mccarthy to block the investigation into what happened on the day of the deadly insurrection. Over the weekend, Committee Vice Chair Republican Liz Cheney joined chairman and democratic member of Congress Benny Thompson in shooting downs mccarthy suggestion last week that the doj found trump said, quote, trump had no involvement in the insurrection. They call it baseless and inconsistent with mccarthys own statements from the week following the January 6th insurrection. Joining our coverage, betsy with ridge swan, national correspondent for politico and also msnbc contributors. Clare is still here. Betsy, i dont like to ask where the line is for any house democrat, but ill ask you it feels like it was an Open Secret for a while, among Chris Wallace who pushed Kevin Mccarthy, among Liz Cheney who dangled this information about Kevin Mccarthy needing to be a fact witness, now among people covering Jim Jordan who is Sort Of humbling about how many times and how he talked to Donald Trump. What is the Operating Thesis of what they are hiding specifically as it regards records . Specifically but the select committee is looking for is any Sort Of Phone Records showing when and for how long these republican members of congress had calls or Text Messages with people in the White House, or with anyone involved from The Other Side, and he organizes or activists, who were in front of the Capital Building at that time. These records will show when those Phone Calls happened, Phone Companies collect records showing how long calls went on for, who received the calls, if there was a Voice Mail left, if there were missed calls. Basically, though Ron Material of what kind of communication of courage. They wont have the contents of these calls, of course, although they will have the contents of voicemails and Text Messages. But it will get a whole lot more clarity in terms of who was talking to who before, during, and after that horrific attack. And they already caught up so much of. This i guess my question is, how much more is . There mccarthy has detailed his call, Congresswoman Butler has said what was said on that call, that mccarthy was told by trump these insurrectionists kerala more about the result than you do, kevin. Jim jordan was talking about talking to him all day, he was hiding within the. People i guess my question, is if we know so much about how often they talk to, him what else do we think there is . Is there are hourly contact, is their complicity, what else is there . That is a good question. I dont know, but i dont. No but i can tell you that i spoke to a republican congressional Source Today about the backlash from these house republicans to word this Preservation Request that went out. And they told me that republicans are freaking out about the fact that this select committee might be getting their Phone Records. Will that tell us about what is in the records is unclear but it is generating an immense amount of Stress And Frustration in the house republican conference. One other thing to bear in mind, theres been a lot of discussion about republicans may be able to do to react tallied against these Phone And Tech companies, but the person i spoke with said today it was most likely that they will retaliate against democrats are doing the same thing next time republicans have control of the house. That source said that if the house flips to republican control in the midterm elections, there will be some substantial pressure from the republican Rig And File and from these far why republican members on house republican leadership to find some Sort Of reason to try to scoop up the private Phone Records of democratic members of congress. Clare, i hope that the democrats cannot be threatened and intimidated and misdirected in that. Way the bar Justice Department saw the Phone Records of dame again while he was in white House Counsel testifying against Donald Trump in the mueller investigation. They saw the Phone Records of smaller, and adam schiff, and the Washington Post, and the New York times. I hope that come get, as they we are so looking for your Phone Records and communications on the day of the u. S. Capital. Who cares . Who cares if they go after democrats records . If you run for office, can i be a witness here, when you run for office, you realize that everything in your life, fair or unfair, even everything in the lives of people you love, even things that happened way before you even met people you love, all of it, it all comes out in public. This notion that somehow the democrats are going to be afraid of trying to get to the truth because somebody might find out that they were texting and old boyfriend or something, Who Cares . The Bottom Line is this, i will tell you what is on those records we have not seen. Imagine if you have a Cell Phone and you realize that people are trying to physically breached the capitol and shouting that they want to hang the vice president. Imagine that you have the Text Phone numbers of Kushner Or Ivanka or Kellyanne Conway or Donald Trump. You know what you are doing . You are texting them and saying, stop it stop the madness this is dangerous. This is scary, we are frightened. They are after. Us that is what they are worried about. And there is going to be a whole bunch of. Them i believe. Im guessing i believe this, but Lindsey Graham to Mob Boss Kevin Mccarthy and back, that have all kinds of communications trying to get trump to call off the mob. You know what . Trump liked it. They could not get him to say what he needs to say to stop it so that Police Officers were not in a situation where somebody was trying to gouge their eyes out with a flagpole. He liked it. And thats what Kevin Mccarthy has already admitted. Thats what mccarthy has already said. And his imitation of a Mob Boss is not gonna make that go away. Right, after all theyre pleading and whatnot, im sure your right, claire. He sent out a message saying, we love you. So. Thats how impactful they. Where we will stay on it. Betsy Woodruff Swan thank you so much for spending time with. This clare is sticking. Around calls for serious Action On Climate Change are growing louder from buyers out west, Will Washington past the top and slow climate and to protect the nation . That question next. This storm in particular, it intensified so rapidly in the atlantic, or in the gulf, that emergency managers, emergency responders, had an even shorter time to warn the public. This is going to be our new normal. Last, year was a Record Number of hurricanes and of Wildfire Season and it is only going to continue to get worse. This is the crisis of our generation. These impacts that we are seeing from climate change. We have to act now to try to protect against the futurists we are going to face. That was fema Administrator Yesterday on Fox News talking about the impacts from Hurricane Ida and what we can continue to expect as climate change becomes our new normal. With louisiana still suffering from the storm, many residents there only have do not have power. The biden administration declaring today a disaster in both New York city and the entire state of new jersey, authorizing federal funds after the devastating and deadly floods from ida last. Week President Biden will be cheering these hard hit areas. But there are calls to do. More as cases of extreme weather, arent showing no signs of slowing. Three new wildfires in california have started in extreme Heat And Drought are threatening Water Access to millions of people. More than 238 medical journals of come together to declare that, quote, joining us now congressman joe douglas a, member of the Judiciary Committee including the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. His state has been hard hit this. Year from fires and drought. I want to start talking about your state and im going to turn to washington. This is something you wrote in The Hill about climate change and colorado, quote, The American West is facing a devastating Fire Season. Its only september and over 4. 9 million acres have burned, surpassing the acreage burned in all of 2019. Our coming our communities gonna wait for action. This was the second most destructive Fire Season history. Three of the highest the state also experienced some of the worst Air Quality in the world this summer. As well as fatal Flash Flooding. The impacts of the Climate Crisis are at our doorstep, threatening lives, health, and property. I know a lot of people have worked on this issue for a long time, but it would appear that everybody is paying attention now and they wonder from your view what can be done not just in colorado but across the country now . Its going to be with you, nicole, and you described that this really affects its climate change that we are experiencing here in colorado, but ultimately folks in our country and in the world are experiencing everyday. I think we are at a critical point. You see that in the hurricanes in louisiana, the Flash Flooding in New York and new jersey, as you, said the historic, and president It Wildfires that my community has experienced. Three of the largest wildfires in my congressional district. Ultimately, whats the scientists are telling us in the Icc Report that was released a few weeks ago and the article that you mentioned just a few days ago, released previously, is that what we are seeing with our own eyes, that climate change is not some crisis that is going to occur at some unspecified future, it is happening now. Each and every day it is impacting. Us it is critical and important for Policy Makers in washington to have the political will to do something about. It and i am grateful, honestly, nicole that for the first time in a long time, we appear poised to do exactly that for the Reconciliation Bill that congress is currently working on. Can you play that ford for us, how does that work . What happens immediately and what else would you like to see happening in your term . Sure, i think, as i, said the report is this Red Alert for humanity in terms of really motivating us to do everything we can to avoid more catastrophic consequences. The 3. 5 trillion dollar Reconciliation Bill has been outlined as we speak in the Committee Jurisdiction in the. House i believe it will take. Leaks it includes a clean Energy Standard at the federal standard for the first time in our Countrys History. It will include a Conservation Climate Core with a 1930s better it includes a herculean investment in Ev Infrastructure across our country. If we can get this across the Finish Line on the president s desk for signature, it will be transformational and put us on the path to win the fight against climate change. This is another issue like Voting Rights, like reproductive freedoms, that is so completely fractured on long partisan lines. And i wonder where to businesses, to the economy, of climate change, do you have conversations that maybe we dont see with republicans . Do you see this the same way you do . There are some republicans, nicole, who i think are interested in ultimately working on this issue, but i must confess that the fact remains that there are many on The Other Side of the aisle who refuse to believe the science and are obstinate in terms of their opposition to do anything about. It it is confounding because there are many districts that are just as hardhit as my district that are red states. Hurricanes, floods, anything that hits the coastlines. So i hope that we can work in good faith with them to adapt some of the solutions that we are proposing. As you know from your time in washington, there is a tendency for policymakers to look at various policy problems, challenges, from a myopic way. What distinguishes climate change from any other policy issue, it virtually impacts every aspect of our lives and our way of life, and the world that our children will inherit. So we will keep pushing, we wont wait, we will be sure that we take decisive action in the next nine weeks. I suspect that you will see a Bill Sign by the president that is the most transformational when it comes to find It Climate Change in the Countrys History. If you can find anyone under the umbrella of not believing the science, it is incredible it is the republicans. Thank you so much Mister Neguse for joining us. For skin that never holds you back dont settle for silver 1 for diabetic dry skin 1 for Psoriasis Symptom Relief and 1 for eczema Symptom Relief Gold Bond Champion your skin the offense of the last week, both in texas and the united states Supreme Court, have shown us that despite the democrats showing holding on to both president s in congress, the republicans still wield a lot of power in this country as the Washington Post writes, quote democratic Strategist And Director of the public Policy Program at the Roosevelt House of Washington Post editorial, fair or not fair . I think thats incredibly, fair, look we as democrats have cultivated a base that is idea orienteds that is fair but the truth is the disenfranchised the majority of disenfranchised groups we represent, they dont want to see us having power and not using. It i would love to get the Merrick Garlands moment back. I would want all of 2016 back. But we have to we are in this position where, historically, president s have gotten a lot done. Lbj passed anti poverty programs. Bill clinton passed a. Bills obama passed the affordable Care Act which would be a resilient piece of legislation. We can do this. It may violate some of the, i dont, know principles that we have tried to build our base upon, but the truth is we need to do it. Look, obviously i spend my time in the republican party, i have been a straight line democratic since 2016 and all i can say is that i hope you keep winning. And what i see is a president who is capable of blocking out the noise. But i see in the Senate Paralysis and an obsession with process. This texas ban happened because of an obsession with ideological policies. The democrats seem constantly wrapped around the axle of process and i wonder how you switch that . It is a problem because, on the one hand, we and i go back to my earlier point we talk about fairness but we also think about process. I look at the fact of what is happening in texas, number, one the attempt to rollback what is already happened in terms of rolling back Voting Rights in this country, and the post obama environment, a lot of folks were saying, a lot of my colleagues across the country, that we dont have the infrastructure on the ground to make sure that these changes are positive for us stay in effect in our state houses. Through there was the broad Infrastructure Question to the party needs to address. There is this fight that we want our leaders to fight. We saw this when there were questions of accountability in the first trump impeachment. Are we actually going to do this . Yes, i understand the need and the desire to focus on process but sometimes i look back and say, why are we the only ones playing by the rules . If we want anything, done we need to force the change. If you take Voting Rights, or you take reproductive freedoms, democrats feel like they are fighting on the republicans turf. Lets have Marc Elias divided, lets have Merrick Garland filed a lawsuit in georgia. Why not pass a massive new voting Rights Legislation to deal with anything borne out of the Big Lie that led to the deadly insurrection . Why not codify what is already constitutionally protected why not be bigger . And that is absolutely right. If i think about the way that Joe Biden ran for president , there was this promise that he would work across the aisle. No one is really interested in working with us from The Other Side of the aisle. They are focused on a massive cultural Shift And Change in this country. And you are, right why cant we do the same . Why cant we talk about . It there is this fear that we may be punished by it, but the truth is that i think the potential to gain more support, to get more enthusiasm out of our base, because we actually accomplish something, will override and overcome whats negative fallout there will be. I appreciate everything that Joe Biden and congress has been so far. We have a long way to go, particularly with respect to this pandemic. As a gen xer, i was commiserating with a friend, i dont know when the Supreme Court is going to change in my lifetime. It is a generational change that its a change that has taken place for generation. And that is scary because texas is not going to be isolated and that is why it is important that we, but power we, have we use it. If you look at how to forces roberts votes sometimes, its a sign of how radical the rest of them . Are its a sign of how extreme the republican party has become. Unfortunately, i think you are right. Basil, it is so nice to see. You thank you for spending some time with us. Thank. You dont go anywhere, we are just getting started. Are just getting started hey google. They choose to do those things that actually isolate the majority of what texas looks like, just to be clear, gop, i know you know, this but maybe the rest of the country doesnt know this, texas is a majority minority state. It is time to pass policies that will respect each and every texan in instead of a select few. Hi again everybody, everything is bigger in texas, including the states lurch to the farright with a wave of new laws going into effect. About this phenomenon, John Balls at the Washington Post writes this, quote so lets examine todays republican priorities with texas leading the way. These texas policies include the most restrictive Abortion Law in the country, abortions after six weeks are outlawed. Citizens can receive a 10,000dollar bounty for anyone who aides to prevent an abortion. Theres a law allowing any texan, and we meet any texan, above the age of 21 to carry a handgun in public without training or license. Texas also enacted a law that limits discussions on our Countrys History regarding race and racism. There is a new law requiring Professional Sports Teams to play the national anthem at the games. And about that restrictive Voting Measure which now bans 24hour And Drivethrough voting and restricts voting by mail, it will soon become law. Carving out spaces the nations most anti choice governor, texas is Greg Abbott Cannot Lay Claim to be prolife, no, not by a long shot. The texas governors Reckless Disregard for the health of his citizens is decidedly pro Disease And Death indifferent. For those living in texas, including that states children. Asking for help in his states overflowing icus, abbott is stridently opposed to Life Saving Measures like vexing and mask mandates. Thats even as the virus surges in schools turning texas children into latest victims in abbotts antiscience worldview. Texas tribune writes this, quote, one district in Central Texas closed its schools after the Labor Day weekend, after two teachers died of covid within a week of each other. All of this adding up to a state whose governing policies dont match the will of its people. According to a new survey from the texas Politics Project at the university of texas at austin, for the first time in its polling history, a majority of texans said that an editorial by The Austin American Statesman which reads, quote the Texas Republican Party serving up a buffet of Red Meat for its base, this is where we start our hour with our favorite friends, Meg Tao is here, mark is the founder of the country. Party also with us is Claire Mccaskill, and Texas State Representative ron reynolds. Also with you representative, what is going on in texas . Nicole, happy Labor Day. Unfortunately, many in the republican leadership who can outflank who in the next republican primary with Red Meat appeasing the trump fights. It is no longer about whats best for texas or good public policy. It is how to go to the far extreme where you dont believe in science and you dont believe in good public policy, but what is far right and can appeals to their base. We should be focusing on issues like Health Care and Covid Recovery, and medicaid expansion. But we focus on those red wreaked issues that you opened up. They are putting politics before people, it is unpatriotic, and on texan. I want you to put up abbots approval rating, 41 of texans approve of, him 50 disapprove. 41 of them strongly disapprove. In a normal moments in our country politics, and i know that this is anything but, that the using the Power Grid through political considerations and neglect would be a political depth now. I was wondering if you can explain whats holds added up to 41 . Quite frankly, Governor Abbott is a auditioning for a potential president. He is in a race for the governor and a race to the bottom when it comes to Covid Recovery and covid response. But that pandering to the farright only honestly he seems to be concerned about, not the majority of the state, but the small, less than 10 of the population that boats in republican primaries. No longer is he concerned about being the governor, but he is concerned about how he can win a primary. That is so disturbing because, as you laid out, there are people who are dying literally every day. School children, and hes Fighting Schools from mask mandates. He is fighting local governments for instituting vaccine mandates. All of this to appease a base that doesnt believe in the science. What he is doing is not appealing to them majority of texans. He is literally only concerned about the small fringe of the farright that will allow him to be reelected to governor and hopefully for, him to be a republican primary. This is the step that he is looking at. Hes not really looking at governance the way it should be. But the way that it can help him win a primary. I hope that voters will wake up and realize the importance of the vote and the reason why Elections Matter and elections have consequences. You have a governor who is out of touch with the majority of the state, and that poll reflects the discussed that a lot of texans feel towards him. Matt devin, i want to read some more about what is happening in the state. But if you can speak to this his Policy Priorities are loathe some but his political considerations are probably being served by the efficiency of ramming through better restrictions. Having the most restrictive Abortion Ban in the country, being the first to begin the process of overturning roe v. Wade. When you make of the victims where the people, and as the representative was, saying even kids in the state of texas . Its great to be on from texas even though our name has been i love the state but i hate our politics right now. We are i hate our politics and the failure of the gop politicians. Ill give you three instances which i will describe, that you will think is absolutely ludicrous, but is true. We have an election which is the most the biggest Turnout Election in texas. A Big Lie develops from. Yet we have an insurrection from the u. S. Come capital based on the big. Lie and what is the gop and Texas Response to that . It is to lie about it and then try to stop people from voting. Make it hard for people to vote. I know their issue, guns. Weve had a Mass Shooting, after Mass Shooting in texas, all around the country, but everywhere in the country. And walmarts, in churches. And what is the Gops Leader of Texas Response to . That make it easier for people to openly carry a gun without permit or training. And abortion, think about this. Texas has more uninsured women and children without Health Care choices than any other state in the union by far. Any any state in the union. And lack of Health Care choice. And what is the response to that . Its to roll over a and take away one of the final Health Care choices a woman has. When you look at all of this panoply of this, across the, board you think this is a joke, this can be true. But as the representative is, saying its not 10 of the state that is is concerned about, it is 5 of the state. Ive said this before, on your show. Texas is a perfect example. They dont care, about the common good. As you can see im voting, as you can see on choice. As you can see and Health Care. As you can see and covid, they dont care about the common. Good they care about me and my 5 that im worried about in the republican primary. Ultimately, the only way that stops, is if they begin losing elections in the general election, its not just about people of color. Its not just about women. Its not just about children, ultimately even the places that vote read, are not going to be represented about whats going on in austin right now. Even the people that vote for republicans in the general election. Because they dont care. I guess math, before they were actually claimed any Sort Of prolife awards, they are so pro diseased, so indifference even among children, whats happening in the schools, i said this about what was happening there, its the biggest national scandal, i want to read some of whats happening. In terms of pediatrics in hospitals. This is houston public media, hospitals across the state are running low on pediatric intensive Care Unit beds. Texass department of State Health services said only 81 beds remain. Just a couple hundred more regular icu beds are available, in the state of 29 Million people. Governor abbott has failed us, republican State Legislature has failed us. Said doctor david portugal, a cardiologist in Sugar Land texas. These leaders should be held accountable and be asked to explain how they can justify taking actions that are killing their fellow texans. Thats a doctors view. A cardiologist view. I guess, my question is, if Pediatric Icu is filled to capacity, dont dent Governor Abbott, what are the chances of running callous people like him, out of State Government . You put up the poll numbers for Governor Abbott, and i know you are saying 41 why do they still support him. Keep in mind thats the lowest that Governor Abbott has every poll. That hes always polled at 50 or, higher thats why hes won the elections in the past. Hes at a low, point and i think its going to keep going lower. Hes exceedingly in my view, vulnerable but he has to be vulnerable to the right candidate, with the right message, in a good campaign. And this is where i have a tendency sometimes you get frustrated. With democrats. Who i am advocating, for who need to win every off as they possibly can, especially here in texas. Because its the only way to save our population and save our republic, is to do that. The problem, is democrats often, see the Messaging Ground to republicans. With democrats have a tendency to do, is Talk Policy points, and process. And republicans top values. In a debate like, that voters ultimately vote based on values. They want to have policy, theyre concerned about those, things but they want to know that you show the same values. Democrats have to start talking about all of these issues. Choice, covid. All of these issues, in a broad value context. And they should not see, the ground a prolife. Republicans are not prolife. They wont do anything about gun vests. They wont do anything about covid. They wont do anything about Health Care. They wont even expand medicaid here, were 90 of the cost would be borne by the federal government. They wont even do it across the state or anything. But they wont do out of some lack of compassion are caring, but democrats, have to talk about this. Better you can be prochoice, as i am, and Pro Life as i am. And believe that a woman has the right to choose, and its her Moral Shaw is, and its her choice with her doctor to choose. But you can also simultaneous be prolife and protecting women and children and people from guns. In all of the other things in this. I think democrats have to get much, much better. Even progressives on this. Having a values based argument. About what the republicans are doing, are disconnected from american values. And disconnected from the values of us in the majority of us believe in. Clare, i want to show you something, that Veronica Escobar said on face the nation yesterday. Well talk about it on the other. Side i am really afraid that because of the senates desire, to hang on to a relic of the past, a Jim Crow relic, the filibuster, that while the house will move expeditiously to protect women from states like texas, and from a Supreme Court that is an activist court. My fear is that some members of the senate, will use the filibuster, as an excuse to not take action. In the face of inaction, we will see more, Death Texas is now very dangerous place for women and children. We are going to see more states, basically import this law, and do everything they can to create the most hostile conditions for women in our country. Clare . Are her concerns well founded . Well, listen, you and i have circled this wagon, a number of times. And clearly, we need filibuster reform. But we also have members of the senate, that are not from districts like hers. We have members of the senate that are democrats, in very red places. And that makes this much harder. I will say, this i could not agree more with matthew about messaging. It needs to be values based. But, heres what i do know, when you are extreme, you lose elections. I, got a second term in the senate, strictly because, was i a strong candidate yes. Did i work my you know what off yes . But i also ended up with an opponent to a very extreme. In it freaks people out, how extreme he was. Thats whats going on in texas right now. So heres my big points, of this segment. State legislative races matter. Thats where democrats really have dropped the ball. They have been so focused on senate races, and congressional races, and president ial races, donors all over the country, our ignorance about whats going on under their own noses, in State Legislatures. This, whats going on in texas, is political malpractice. Because, texas has gained prominence, because they have attracted new business. In Tech Business and young workers. My daughter is among them. She is freaked out. They will not attract young workers with this kind of profile. This is not the kind to state young people want to live. In where everybody gets a gun no matter how crazy they are. And where, if youve been raped by your mothers boyfriend, you cant have an abortion. Without a private Bounty Hunter coming after you. This is not, what people want. The majority of texans, now all we have to do, is focus on the right candidates finally running strong campaigns, making sure donors are supporting those candidates. Whether theyre running for state representative, or congress. And i know, that we want to stay fixated on the filibuster. But this is much bigger than the filibuster, this is about winning elections. Republicans are giving us an opportunity now, and we should not blow. Clare, matt, Texas State Representative ron, reynolds thank you so much for starting us off this hour. When we come back. Afters summer that proved deadlier than expected, whether the next few months hold, for the fight against the Coronavirus Pandemic . Including a lot of experts by surprise, and a highly contagious Delta Variant of the coronavirus causing deaths and hospitalizations that are still rising. In a lot of this country. Today the Washington Post reports on what experts are saying about the persistent question, that everchanging interpretation of, what is known as the covid endgame. The answers come in a Kaleidoscopic Kill Vacate of scenarios, some suggested with utmost humility, others with mac magical confidence. The pandemic will end. Because deaths finally dropped, about the same level we are accustomed to see from the flu each year. Or will end when most kids are vaccinated. Or, it will end because americans have finally exhausted by all the restrictions in their daily lives. There is a Consensus Bottom Line about the biggest question, pandemics do end, Sort Of, some of the nations most prominent epidemiologist, and Public Health experts say we are already there. For different reasons. Turning our, coverage Laurie Garrett, pulitzer prizewinning journalist. In an msnbc science contributor, what do you make of that analysis . In all of this Sort Of Crystal Ball gazing, about Whether Delta has peaked . Weve been here before. Over and over and over again. I remember when everybody was Writing Articles in the past, tense about this epidemic and that was about six months ago. We were there in 2020, when people were claiming, oh the end is right around the corner. We cant buy into this, its always wrong. Its always well intended, but ill informed, and often very much driven by a kind of, Overarching Hopefulness from Wall Street. Desperate to see the economy back in predictable circumstances. With everybody raring to go to the movie, theaters and jump on airplanes. Were just not there folks. I dont think anybody, who is looking in their crystal, while trying to imagine where were going to be, by halloween, where were going to be by christmas. Has a really strong sense of where this Delta Variant is going, and whats variants that lurk around the corner, that will have an even perhaps worse effect on the united states situation. The one thing that is clear, is that 20 of the american belts, get vaccinated, we remain vulnerable. The whole population remains vulnerable. Most schools have only started opening, many states, many schools open today after Labor Day. But we are already seeing schools shutting down. Giving us at a classroom education, going back to virtual. Over and, over all over the place, because of outbreaks. This, means that we keep overestimating our own capacity, too well, i would say to control, it because we have the capacity to control, it we just dont have the capacity to get our fellow citizens, to exercise what they need to exercise, in order to control the spread of the disease. Lori, i would just add, if something more than the hopefulness of, Wall Street i think anyone raising a child right, now has to live with the hope, you look at your kid and you tell them it will and. You tell them ones all parents can make a decision to vaccinate their children, we can go back to a normal activities. What is The Other Side of the equation, about a return to something resembling normal, for american families . I heard a great quote, somewhere, this morning. And it was, im tired of being resilient. I just want to relax. Wow, who doesnt feel that way. It gave me goose bumps when i heard, and its precisely in a nutshell, whats going on in america today. So whats the answer to that . Ladies and gentlemen, we still have a tough road ahead of us. And for all of your parents with kids, or employers you need your workforce back onsite, youre going to have to be prepared, to dance around. Try, open see infections. Go back closed, theres Gotta Be Agility here. I totally recognize whats going on with the kids. Psychologically what were doing to children, is really tough. They need to be with other kids, a fiveyearold can only get so much from a 50 year old grandma, where they really need is another fiveyearold. If we cant get them in the classroom, we cant get them on the playground. We cant get them on the teams, because their community refused needs to vaccinate, and refuses to wear masks. Are there governor basically bans mask use, in the state. Then, its going to be consistently, dangerous, there is going to be outbreaks. And yes, we are seeing more kids hospitalized, across the country, in a subset of them experiencing severe disease. Lori, what can you help us understand, about where the fda is, in terms of boosters, and where the approval process, is in terms of vaccines for kids under 12 . What a mess, my god. If Theres Anything thats been mishandled in the last three or four months, this whole booster shot business, what a debacle. First of, all we still dont have a person running the fda. I dont understand whats going on in the way, house and why there hasnt been some sense of urgency, about putting somebody in the driver, seat at the fda. Second, the actual application, from pfizer, my understanding, is its 100,000 pages long. You cant read that. And come up with a detailed analysis, of all the issues that you want to raise. If youre one of the scientific, unpaid, scientific advisers that are supposed to tell the Fda Esther no. You cant read 100 the awesome pages in a few days. And then right behind, them comes moderna, theyre going to have another hundred thousand pages, and so on. This is a huge process. And we dont have a reliable, system in place, for rapidly reviewing such proposals, in reaching conclusions. So far, the acip, which is the advisory group to the cdc, that then tells the Fda Yes or no on your idea, for any particular drug innovation, the acip, he has so far done a pretty good job. But this is, this is over the top, where we are now. And the obvious next question, that everybody is going to ask, is first you said five months, then you said eight months, then you said six months, how many months after my second dose . And then first you said everybody, then you roll it back to just pfizer recipients. So what are all the Moderna And Johnson johnson recipients supposed to do. It is such a mess its so confusing. And on top of Everything Else nicole, we are no people. Were well connected, well financed. And ive already gotten their third dose, because they just had a little discussion. With their doctor. Or their pharmacist. And boom, there it is. So now, we have a whole other layer of inequity. Builds on top of an already existing deeply unequal distribution, of all the benefits of fighting off this disease. Whether its drugs or vaccines, and this is just terrible, i dont understand how they messed this up. This badly. This is really bad news. Stay on it with your help. That was the disgraced twice impeached insurrection inciting Ex President intending to strongarm the secretary of State Ralph Brats Burger on the infamous Phone Call of January 2nd asking him to find the votes that would overturn president Joe Bidens victory. That call, and many of the other people on, it cannot be part of the investigation by Fulton County Da Venue willis which, according to the daily beast, has now started Interviewing State Officials and receive documents related to georgias 2020 election recount. From the daily beast report, quote according to two sources lets bring in our coverage harry lin, former deputy assistant, general and greg boosting, Politico Reporter for the atlanta journalconstitution. Greg, what is going on . This is never expected to be Lightning Convection this is gonna be taking a long, time. Even though it seems to many that there has been evidence just from that recorded phone, call it can take months and months for local prosecutors to sample evidence. But im told that people that are familiar with this investigation significant news is expecting the next few months. Were also told that investigators are coordinating with congressional investigators who are also probing the pressure applied to the wrecks and berger and other georgia overturned the president s. Defeat so we will see, something probably later this year in terms of concrete developments. But right now we are seeing ears turn behind the scenes as investigators are winning the case. Let me ask you rob, because those some news in, their big News Meaning charges, potentially . Potentially, a Special Grand jury investigation. New developments. Im not sure if its going to involve charges. My sources were pretty nondescript on that. Front but they did say that there will be some tangible movement in the next few months. This is still moving along. There is a sense out there that it has stalled out. But clearly the gears behind the scenes are moving. And greg, i understand second head of news. That the congressional investigation the House Select Committee investigating January 6th and you have any indication which one or both of the committees . I have no indication of which of those committees but i know congressional investigators have sought documents, not just from the raffensperger, but also other Georgia Elected Officials who are being pressured by trump to take action to reserve reverses action. The response i got from De Williss Office and from people who are familiar with the investigation was that theyre essentially have already gotten those documents and are coordinating in terms of sharing the proceeds. So harry, let me just take the call. Its over an hour, i think its closer to an hour and a half, im not a lawyer but you are, can you tell us what kind of crimes are under consideration . These solicitation to commit election fraud, a felony in Georgia Law, something that theyre trying to get raffensperger to, do the letter they sent out to the people to preserve evidence gave out of flurry of other charges. We know for giuliani, me be, for saults statements. Lindsey graham for the same kind of. Charge the flavor of extortion. But the number one charge they are going for, and it is clean, it is simple, and it has this fantastic feature of being all in the defendants voice, the thing that trump avoided all the time, but raffensperger was smart and knew he might lie about it and taped it, is the solicitation to commit election fraud. It would be, that tape would be played 20 different times in different ways and it is something of whats involved. Just to add, they have been doing the voluntary part including with the Secretary Of State folks, i think they have to grand jurys assembled and they are the next the stuff would be to subpoena other documents. Harry, the Lindsey Graham call since the time it was first recorded, i think that might have been by you gregory, or other, colleagues wherever i first read. That always seemed one step too far even for Lindsey Graham. Not his state, not his role. Potentially exposing him to criminal questions. What do you make of what questions would you have about lindseys Role And Conduct . Check, check, check its all the three. He had somehow put himself in the small group, including Rudy Giuliani and sidney powell. Now the big difference here is they dont have the goods on tape, but what he said was try to get can you get rid of these some of these mailin ballots that dont seem to be kosher. Now relative to trump, he could say that he was in trying to do anything, and he has already tonight. It so its a separate case to make. On the other hand, we know that the voluntary interviews they have done with the secretary of States Office have focused very much on this call and Lindsey Graham as well as on trump. So theyre certainly pointing in that direction. He was certainly more than five its at the time. He was trumps emissary as far as anyone could tell. Ask him nine reasons, but there he was, out there trying to propound the Big Lie. If you ever feel like you are losing grasp of just how bad Donald Trump was, just how corrupt he was, just how heinous he was in private Phone Calls he never thought would be, heard listen to the whole Phone Call again. Thank goodness he didnt succeed. Thank you gentlemen for the. Coverage when we come back, President Biden campaign to restore the soul of the country. This week, he gets the chance to show off the traits that propelled him to victory last. Year that is next is nex Joe Biden campaigned for president as a leader who could steer the country through the deadly largely on manage pandemic, as well as the dangerous wave of tribalism in division in the u. S. His campaign to restore the soul of the country, was a prologue to the marriott of crises he now faces, as president. The coming weeks are most likely an opportunity for him, to showcase the steadiness, and empathy that helped secure his victory last november, tomorrow he will survey the damage in New York in new jersey, so hard hit by those deadly flash floods, late last week, and coming up this weekend, the 21 anniversary of the September 11th attacks, he will attend ceremonies at all three memorial sites, New York, pennsylvania, and the pentagon in virginia. Joining our coverage is historian jump, each of Rodgers Chair in the american presidency, a vanderbilt university, he occasionally advises President Biden. I have to ask you have you advised him lately . And specifically on this, what he will say and do around the anniversary of September 11th next saturday . I have not, i suspect this will be intuitive to him. Honestly. I think that what President Bush called a day of fire, is this great inflection points, in the life of 21st century, america it has shaped so, much of what has happened, it continues to really be part of the channels, of our lives. And i think that the work of a 20th anniversary, like this, is to commemorate the deaths of the innocence, who died because they went to work. Or got on a plane. And were going about their lives. I think always, as im sure you, do about that remarkable story of flight 93, in the skies over pennsylvania. When those passengers lived out, the gospel injunction, greater love have no man in, this than to lay down his life for his friends. They struck back. Knowing that they would die. And i think that all of that, is blessedly and wonderfully, a part of who the president , is in who at our best the country is. Was on that flight. The stories were so familiar to those of, us who were working in governments. At the time. That to meet a lot of the family, members of flight 93, but youre right, the stories are from under this president. And what was fleeting, but historic, was some sense of patriotism. Of unity after 9 11. And i wonder if you think this president is inclined to call on that echo. That memory, at this moment . I think so. I think that in an hour like this, an american president , into new with Whats Lincoln called, the better angels of our nature. Knows what to say. Which you say, is we were hit, evil attempted to shape and change the way we live, it was the result of a will to power. By targeting the innocent. And, what america does, at its best, in way Human Beings do at their best, is they stand up against those who would persecute the innocent, for some kind of political, or theocratic agenda. Its not even, its an interesting sign of where we are, as a country. But this is even really something to note. George w. Bush, knew what to say. He went down, to that mass grave, on the friday after his remarkable speech in washington national cathedral. And he did not have talking points. When he picked up that bullhorn, he responded, and he responded for a grieving in wounded country. And thats at their best, what president s do, i dont want to make president s these olympian figures. But they are in a way both a mirror and a maker, of who we are. And what President Bush was, on that friday, was a mirror of the defiance he felt in that smoky pit, and i think what President Biden has an opportunity to, do over the next week or so, is are a country that is reflective, hopefully about the lessons of that day, again honor the people who experienced it. The folks who, are these amazing human stories. Of what its like. When history in the unimaginable, strike you. Youre right about the generational thing. I was struck on the students im teaching this semester, were all born after the florida recount. Which, made my late middle age seem even worse. One student asked me once whats Cut And Paste meant, in their just being generous to people like. Us true. Its an important week for the country.
