They claim they have taken the last afghan province with troops actively fighting against their rule. Resistance leaders deny cedeing any new ground. Joining us now is raf sanchez, Molly Hunter In pakistan, ken delainian. And while thousands of afghans wait in doha and the Ramstein Air Base to find out where their new homes will be there are millions, even a few hundred americans left, trying to navigate life around this new taliban rule. A senior State Official telling our colleagues that four americans made it out of afghanistan today by land. Those americans are in good condition and they are on their way out now. The State Department is being very circumspect in terms of what they say about the land roots the americans are taking out of afghanistan and that is because those routes are complicated and dangerous. In the north of the country there is a number of flights ready to go, ready to leave. Some of them preparing to carry out groups of Teenage Afghan girls. And in an International Airport where morning forces were operating just last week, that airport is still not functional yet nap will be a real focus for Tony Blinken who arrived here about two hours ago. The countries have been very involved in the effort to get functional again. There has been some good news in the last few days, the countries are getting aid flights in on a daily basis and there are domestic flights within afghanistan that are taking off and landing. The airport is still not ready for international evacuations and getting it up and running is a very important part of trying to fulfill the americans. Right now there is a lot of distrust, and their security forces, and give us a read of that. Hey, jeff, yeah, to be clear the distrust absolutely goes both ways. I was speaking with Tony Blinken as he makes an approach to the allies. They have been dictating to allies and they mentioned the land crossings. Theyre not getting people out, theyre evacuating people at this time which means your options are o to go over land. Only of them are registered, many are not, we have been watching two Border Crossings really closely. The government officially says no refugees without documentation are allowed in. That means the people getting in have visas to a third country or they need serious medical attention. Now the Border Crossing Lead to people in the last few days. The one that were really watching is the border crossing that rough for a minute of about 6,000 people. What were watching is to figure out if a lot of people are coming in in ways that the Unhcr Call irregular crossings. This is a long border. Were going to try to figure out if theyre coming in in bigger numbers than maybe it appears. David, i want to bring you in, you were held for more than even months by the taliban starting in 2008 and they were traditionally holding a more modern stance. I understand you also have reports about the flights that raf raf is talking about. Right now our 19 american citizens and their families and 40 siv holders, translators that work with the United States Military waiting to fly out on those planes are being held up by the State Department and the White House. I want to repeat that. The State Department and the White House. I also heard that Senator Bloomenthal had people complaining in terms of how theyre helping people get out of the country. This is a growing there are no no americans, and clearly there is a lot of confusion about what is happening. Yeah, again, according to their office there is 19 citizens. The planes will go to albania and they will welcome them. All together 700 trying to get out of the country. 19 u. S. Citizens. Many, you know again, there is other Aide Groups and journalists i know trying to help get the two planes out and i just see over and over the civilian effort is far more ambitious and dynamic and successful than what the administration is doing. They have been slow to respond to this. They have to continue to push to get these afghan allies out of afghanistan. Ill not surprised by what the taliban is doing. They will continue to block them from getting out of afghanistan. We will continue to do more reporting on what is happening there. As we talk about The End of this war, The End of this cop flight, were thinking about the 20th Anniversary of the 9 11 terror attacks. Today is the 15th Anniversary of President Bush announcing that some conspirators would be transferred to where you are. Where do things stand there today . The proceedings here are resuming, but the real story is that there is just very little happening. This trial is not moving forward. Were in our ninth year of pretrial litigation. There is a number of reasons for why it is taking so long. It is different to get down here. But one of the biggest reasons is the secrecy of the proceedings. Im going to be in there tomorrow sitting next to some of the 9 11 families. The proceedings are piped in on a 40 second delay incase a defendant blurts out classified investigation. The Defense Lawyers say theyre not getting all of the evidence they need because the government is still trying to cover what the cia did to some of the defendants at black sites. Prosecutors say it is the Defense Lawyers causing the delays. But justice has been substantially delayed. I spoke to kevin powers, a Boston College Expert and what he had to say. Take a listen to what he had to say about this. It has been nine years really difficult, there has been no hearing or otherwise, and it doesnt seem like that is happening any time soon and it is not through the people prosecuting or the way the system is set up. While the biden administration says they want to close guantanamo, but there is a 15 Million expansion under way to build a courtroom to make this place bigger. Its not clear that this place will close any time soon, jeff. And there is questions about where those people would be sent to. There is real concern among lawmakers that the control of afghanistan means that Terror Groups have a new place to plot attacks. They believe that Al Qaeda Will Have Safe Haven over the taliban. There is some 2,000 hardens isisk fighters in that country. How do they prevention it from becoming a safe harbor. Its not an immediate threat. Over time it will be a haven for terrorists, and this is the tragedy of not wanting and helping our other allies. It is an estimated 300,000 afghans that backed the american plojt in the last to years. So we signalled to people muslims that wanted a mdern afghanistan, and that i think this is the largest foreign Policy Crisis of the biden administration and they have to follow through here. Hoping that afghan stabilizes and that the taliban become our ally. Thats not going to work. They have to counter this threat. And as you talk about the 300,000 afghans who assisted and remain there, many of them i imagine want out, what does that look like . Is there is other countries to the north. How will parttime fend their way out . It is dangerous. This group, there is six planes in total. There is a larger group of people that hope to get out and the land routes are more difficult. But we have very little credibility in this region since the 80s when we fuelled the war against the soviets. We have not were seeing american lives at stage and we engage and we invade afghanistan. When we grow tired we walk away. It helps with refugees, and again, it is not going to go away. Its a huge challenge, again, i would say the biggest so far for the policy in terms of foreign policy. Reporter the folks in this Community Today are struggling with the fact that we expect rain here throughout the afternoon. Just in the last hour more rain came down. Were standing in Water And Mud here and it making it difficult as people try to clean out their homes and their vehicles, but this Weather Situation makes it worse. There is half A Million people here without power. I want you to listen to one individual here. About theyre own situation. I love these people, theyre my family and theyre all suffering. Theyre all suffering. There is not a person hear that is not is your honoring. These are the worst conditions i have ever seen. Folks are trying, but it is so difficult here when youre dealing with these persisting complications. People are just trying to clear out more mud and sludge. You have Power Line crews here in indiana and michigan. They were all here trying to do their best to get out. The devastation is unbelievable. Lets bring in Josh Letterman who is Jefferson Parish. Youre at a distribution point, whats the scene there . I see some workers bind you and whats the need . What do folks need the most . Jeff, it is going on day eight here there is really clean water because it is still on a boil advisory. No working refrigerators for most folks. The needs are basic. It is things like ice. They are unloaded it into trucks. They are calling out numbers because you get a certain allotment of supplies based on how many people are in your household. They are handing out water and food. Were talking meals ready to eat like what we have in a war zone. Vegetable crumbles with pasta. This is chicken chunks. This is life in Jefferson Parish for the moment. I spoke to the president of the parish who said look, for now, if they can, theyre it is very difficult to live here right now. Again everybody has to make a personal choice. I know it is hard to stay away. Were trying to get out information about what our systems are like. One of the ironic things is the equalizing things this is having. You have beat up Pickup Trucks right behind Brand New Lex Lexus suvs. It is the same for everyone. What can you tell us about the Oil Spill, is that close to being contained . Theyre working on that. It was a foot wide pipe that was dislodged and it was leaking. There is an oil sheen. Divers are working on it along with the Coast Guard but theyre putting in Containment Measures as they are getting that situation under control. Josh letterman. The director of the Earth System Science center. He is also the author of the new climate war. Michael, it is good to see you again. First i want to get your reaction to this Oil Spill. We heard josh say it is 12 miles long, and people remember the massive bp Oil Spill over a decade ago just off of the coast. Yes, it is good to be with you. They are seeing that playout in realtime, the devastation in louisiana as the consequence of an unprecedented hurricane that just devastated hurricanes in that part of, you know, in that part of louisiana. Lets not lose sight of the irony here. The Oil Leaks are from, in general, from platforms and rig thats have been destroyed and are looking for it in some way. Parts of them become dislodged because of a monumental storm. This storm that is fuelled by record warm Ocean Temperatures due to the burning of oil and other Fossil Fuels. It is a vicious cycle and it is a reminder of the hiddens goes and the importance of getting off of Fos Siel fuels as fast as we can. We have a string of calamities, four or five fires concurrently, intense hurricanes, excessive flooding, all happening simultaneously. Yeah, this is one of the things warned in recent United Nations report that came out a few weeks ago. One of the things that were now seeing because of Human Cost Climb Challenge are simultaneous weather i did asters, the devastating hurricanes dound south that make their way to the northeast and produce record flooding. So were dealing with all of these disasters at the same time. It really starts to test our adaptive capacity. In your segment earlier you showed the human toll. Peoples lives have been discorrupted. People who lost lives. There was a firefighter in california that lost his life just in the last 24 hours fighting one of the monumental wildfires out there. There is a real toll that Climate Change is taking on us on our society, on our economy, and on human life. We have to recognize it is the greatest threat that we now faes. When you talk about the toll it takes on us, one of the questions i have is like what more can we do . I put out my recycling, a paper straw, it feels unsufficient like it doesnt meet the moment. They set a good example for other people. There are no Regret Strategies for trying to do something, but make no mistake the most important thing you can do is threaten policy makers, the only real solution is systemic in nature. Policies like the reconciluation package. We can shift off of Fossil Fuels as quickly as we need. We talk about the devastating impacts that we see playing out as a result of the warming of the planet. But the latest science is that if we stop burning carbon, stop putting Carbon Pollution into the atmosphere, the temperature of the planet stabilizes pretty quickly. There is a direct and immediate impact of our efforts. What were seeing is baked in and well have to deal with that. We can prevent things from getting worse by dramatically weaning ourselves off of Fossil Fuels in the years ahead. It is good to know there is still time to turn things around. Thank you for your time this afternoon. The u. S. Surpassed 40 Million covid cases. Well talk to a doctor about it coming up. Youre watching msnbc reports. R. Now reaching an alarming milestone over the week surpassing 40 Million coronavirus cases. Coronavirus deaths are rising in 48 states. And now there are growing concerns about infections among children. After Hospitalization Rates have risen five should. Officials are preparing to see a spike after this labor day weekend. Joining us now is juan. Also an nbc medical contributor. So what kind of impact, what kind of effect are these rising covid cases having there out there l. A. . We flow is an impact in hospitalizations with children, but there is a real impact in schools across the country, not just here in california. With an increase in the number of students testing positive more schools will be shutting down. They have been forced to come down around 30 states around the country since the schools reopened around the summer. A lot of parents are going back to quarantining and virtual learning, and here in Los Angeles schools have taken a more aggressive stance. The second largest School District here. Schools all have different rules when it comes to vaccination mandates. With the increase in children we expect an interruption to an education and a lot of those having to go back to school they finally is to go back to teaching. They have 1,000 schools across 45 states to close. In most cases were only two or three weeks into the school year. What is the status . There has been a lot of push back back and forth about the Booster Shots but for the covid vaccines, whats the latest on that . You know is slowly going along. There is only one vaccine for kids over the age of 12. Moderna applied for that vaccine back in june but the fda has still not granted them full eua for that Age Group under the age of 18. Moderna is still only approved for adults over the age of 18. What were lacking at in terms of the younger Age Group Social Security that were hoping to get data from the five to 12yearold Age Group. And then it will not be october to november before shots go into arms for that younger group for pfizer. Were hoping to get data on the younger than fiveyearolds and for moderna were hoping to get the eua for the 6 to 12yearolds at The End of the year and younger than that early quarter 2022. The issue of these authorizations and approvals for Advantage Seens is just a very, very different process than it is for adults. It is taking a longer time to consent. Some kids are needlephobic. Why is that . With children we have to be even more certain that were offering is truly safe and effective. And we have toy think about dosing as well. Not only deescalating doses, but also going down, you know, in a stepped down fashion for all of those Age Groups. Yeah, when we talk about the Delta Variant and the fact that these Pediatric Icus are filling up as tragic as that is, we know the Delta Variant is more transmissable. Is that what is attributing to this . It is a very fine point. They have increased dramatically, five fold, since the beginning of Summer Nap is true and there is more cases per One Million children hospitalized now than even in our peak in january. But the proportion of cases has remained the same that suggests that the Delta Variant is not more severe in children, its just a matter of sheer numbers. The more cases in the community, the more cases in adults, the more cases well see in our children. Importantly here too there is a relationship to vaccination status. We see a reverse association with er visits. Hospitalized kids are ten times more likely to be unvaccinated than vaccinated. The number is striking. I think we have about 365 children per day getting hospitalized because of covid19. If thats your kid thats a big, big number, jeff. Yeah, absolutely. Final question here about the Delta Variant. Other countries dealt with this. The Delta Period was between six to eight weeks. We, i think, extended beyond that. Where are we in the life of this pandemic as it relates to this specific variant . I think what were seeing is the rate of increase has started to come down a little bit and again, you know, experts attribute that to a combination of things. That were seeing increased vaccination rates. You know, significantly so in the last number of weeks. We are, unfortunately, seeing more people who are being infected but that does generate some natural immunity and also the behavioral response to the Delta Variant causing more people to be more cautious in their potential travel plans, travel activity, mask wearing, and other behaviors that we know prove to be very successful in terms of their mitigation. The president is sinking to the mid 40s, off of the highs of his early months. Washington Week Moderator is joining us now. It is good to see you. As we talk about these Poll Numbers there is always a caveat that polls are a snapshot in time and that this president , President Biden, is doing exponentially better than his predecessor, donald trump, at this time. But one of the polls shows the president losing support among independents. The chief culprit appears to be the afghanistan withdrawal. Thats right the thing that this Poll Underscores is the majority of people look at the Afghanistan War and see it as a failure. They think the withdrawal was really a problem and they wanted to see things done differently. That said this also underscores that President Biden has a number of challenges ahead of him. He wanted to be talking about infrastructure and the economy, and the right circumstances that could impact how people define a presidency and how people see President Biden. And this is interesting because it really crystallizes the partisanship in our country. If you look at who people blame for how the war in afghanistan went, if you look at democrats, theyre blaming former President Bush and former president trump. Theyre blaming former President Obama and biden. So this poll is challenging, its not what the White House wants to see, but it is also a reminder the president is not thinking about the politics and the majority of americans want to make money. History will have judged him as making those decisions in that country. One of the toughest numbers is the coronavirus. There has been nearly 375 Million shots in arms, but the Delta Variant is spreading as we talked about in our previous segment and the inability to get so many other people vaccinated. They created a Vaccine Distribution System from scratch and if there are governors and read states that want to say they Cant Mandate masks, theres not a lot of President Biden can do that. He is held responsible for it. He is, and lets remember President Biden did celebrate on july 4th. There was some democrats saying this was not the best thing, but lets remember that the president said over and over again the way out of the pan determine sick through vaccination. The way to a better economy, he says, is through the Delta Variant and making sure people get vaccinated against the covid virus. I think when you look at these numbers what you see is that the president is trying to really convince americans that if they want to get the virus they should get the vaccine. But the other thing is the Original Sin of this pandemic was polarization. But that is going to continue to show up. It was polarized from the beginning, and the Vaccine System that was almost starting from scratch, but either way people dont feel good when they feel anxious about the future. When they feel anxious about whether or not they child will get covid as theyre seeing in surging numbers. They blame the person in office and thats what youre seeing in these numbers. Such a good point. I appreciate you as always. And the groundbreaking technology to maximize the youngest star with Elizabeth Holmes and it is all alive and a Tech Plan that did not work, and it is the reckoning of the culture and it is accused of not only defrauding investors of hundreds of investors and putting them at risk with the accurate, and now we bring in the author of Bad Bloods and the secrets of a book that led to the unraveling of the company, and it is all in the book of secret lives. John, it is great to have you with us, and if not for the pandemic, and the The End of americas longest war it would be a much bigger headline than it is, and this company was valued at several billion at one point. Help us to understand how it fell apart. And at the height in early 20125 and for a couple of months in late 2013, it is the most valuable company and private company in Silicon Valley and Uber And Spotify and airbnb and what happened is that elizabeth created the company coming out of stanford and dropped out of stanford in 2003 and then created a vision of the Finger Stick Blood tests and then over time over the dozen of years until the downfall, she minimized the gaps between what she was claiming she had achieve and what she had actually achieve and the chemists had achieve and by the time i came along and broke the scandal in 2015, there was a yawning gap between her claims and the reality their nose had devices that didnt work. At trial, we will hear from the witnesses that the company was using proprietary tests for only 1250 that were used on people and the others were from thirdparty companies like machines on specimens. You were there and what is the Defense Strategy at this point . The Defense Strategy is interesting, because it seems to be what i call in the podcast to be a svengali defense. She is going to shift the blame as much as possible to her exboyfriend the number two executive there who is also Elizabeth Holmes boyfriend for more than a decade. And that Sonny Deprooied her of agency and Free Will and so that she didnt have the ability to premeditate fraud. It is a really, tough, tough defense to pull off, because you are asking the jurors to believe that when she was at the height of her fame giving these incredibly charismatic performances in front of audiences at the Tech Conferences and in interviews with the media, that sonny was the Puppet Tier behind the scenes controlling her and she was not doing any of this on purpose. So it is a tough Defense Strategy and very unusual Defense Strategy, but on the other hand Elizabeth Holmes in my experience because i have been covering this story for 6 1 2 years, she is an incredible chameleon and she is going to go on to stand and tell of this abuse, and she is going to play the part of the naive young woman who was manipulate and i dont put it past her that she is going to get the jury to eat out of her hand. So, there is the impact on what this means for her, and broadly, what does this mean for Silicon Valley and how has this reverberate in the Silicon Valley in the minute that we have left. That is a great question, and this trial is a referendum on Silicon Valleys fake it until you make it culture, and Elizabeth Holmes did not happen in a vacuum. She dropped out of stanford at 19, and really embraced the Silicon Valley culture and channeled it and looked up to people like Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison who was an early investor in the company, and she knew the lore and early in the companies they had faked it until they made it, and it was okay to behave that waysh, but of course, she took it to the greater extremes, because hers was not a piece of software, but it was medical device. And so the jury in deciding this case, will have a bunch of young entrepreneurs here saying look at Elizabeth Holmes running around the valley getting away with it, and so i am okay. And lastly, The Last Question here, since you broke this case wide open, have you been subpoenaed, and if not, do you expect to be . No. I was on the list of possible witnesses that was appended to the Juror Questionnaire two weeks ago and that made me wonder, because i have not been subpoenaed, and usually, you have to be subpoenaed before you are called to the witness stand. The government just today filed the latest list of probable witnesses, and i am not on it, and so, that makes me think that if im going to be called as a witness it is going to be the defense that calls me as a witness. All right. John carreyrou, thank you. We will check back with you as this case advances. And now, live on the ground to talk to the families on the ground talking about the long recovery next.
