Theyre pushing some of the pressure to governors saying that governors can use some of the other federal money that has been pumped into states around the country with respect to covid Toaugment State benefits. Temperaturically the money comes from the state and this has been a layer of additional support from the federal government that increased those payments because the government understood that there was people out of work at a Payment Level and a Wage Level greater than what State Benefits could sustain. There will still be some relief, but that federal help evaporates today because it was written into the law at a time when it was almost hard to imagine that covid would be as stuff as it is now. Congresss plate is incredibly full right now with some of the other big issues important to the biden agenda. The options that states are trying to give is to look to state governors, and they are emphasizing some of the Job Partnering and Training Programs that they have funded through the various relief packages related to covid. They also looked to things like Child Care keeping some people out of the Labor Force and with school now back in session in most places as we all wait to see how Covid Will or wont impact personal learning, how that could impact those that need childcare, so no easy answers on a plan they hardly supported through the early part of this administration. The time lymphs imposed by congress and there doesnt appear to be a pathway now to extend that, at least what were seeing from congress at this point. So its realtime to say is there a way that governors could repurpose and could the programs help people be more employable when there are a lot of help wanted signs out in various sectors of the economy. We saw congress democrats up in arms when Rental Assistant ran out last month, what are we hearing about the unemployment benefit expiration. It seems at this point the only solution for her is taking out more student loans. A opponent of concern for some economists that say this abrupt stop to the benefits could have longterm effects. We made so much progress and people just started looking for work. And already we went from 20 Million benefits to 12 million, but this ending is coming too fast for everyone to find a job in time. Before their savings go down, before they lose their home, before they lose their car. So congress should be ready to act, you know, this expiration is coming at the worst time just as the Delta Surge is complicating Peoples Ability to go back to work safely and make sure that kids are taken Care Of. And many businesses dont want to hire the older workers that are relying on Unemployment Benefits. We just dont have the right matches and the right places. A number of progressives in the house are threatening to shoot down that package if reconciliation is not available by then. Five individuals who existed in those senior centers have since passed away. The conditions here eight days later are not that much better than the day after that storm. Colonel, do you agree with the Generals Assessment and what is your concern right now on what is happening on the ground in afghanistan and may happen in the next 12 to 18 months. It is very difficult to disagree. Our view of the taliban is that they control we already know that is not the case if is a fragmented organization. It is you know it was Tip Oneil that said all politics are local. That is certainly true in afghanistan where war lords, people that control various valleys and villages, are really on their own to do whatever they want to do no matter how much the taliban tries to control them. It is very, very easy to develop cells, which have been developed before and worked against us, our allies, our interests in the region and elsewhere. There is also support from places like pakistan that continues to support terrorists. I think the Generals Concern is a valid one. It is extremely difficult to counter any resurgence of terrorism in a fragmented country that is not in anyones control. Our intelligence has to come from the taliban of all places and we wont act until it is verified by someone else. Difficult times ahead. Best case scenario, worse case scenario, given the reality on the ground with the taliban right now . I think were going to see an export of terrorism to places where it is not it doesnt exist in great numbers at the moment because the taliban, isisk, and a variety of other organizations need support. But i think that he is ready about the initial problem for afghanistan which is that there will be an ongoing Civil War and a fight for control. The network that is very, very close to the taliban is liable to gear up decide it wants control, maybe just kabul and its environment, but maybe elsewhere as well. This there will be continued fighting in the Fighting Season and i think it will be quite some time before the taliban seizes control of the country. I also want to talk about the 9 11 documents. You flow are first responders and families that have been fighting for years and years. Now at least theyre going to get the slow rollout of the unclassified portions of these documents. Do you feel confident they will get answers to some of the questions they have had for so long including any possible implication of saudi arabian officials . Probably so. The State Department is also responding to a dramatic claim from republican congressman Mike Mccaul that the taliban is holding six Planes Hostage in northern afghanistan. This newly obtained photo shows planes on the tarmac at the airport, but a State Department spokesperson didnt outright deny the claim, though saying it does not have reliable means to confirm any details. Last hour, my colleague, hallie jackson, spoke with the leader of the group in contact with some of the passengers. Were in constant contact around the clock and theyre holding steady. The girls are pretty theyre tough and they know that everybody is out there pulling for them. But theyre also really frustrated and confused as to why theyre still sitting there. Joining me is President And Ceo of a nonprofit that provides humanitarian Aid And Assistance to refugees. Let me ask you first about the situation on the ground. Obviously good news that we got some americans out through an Overland Route. What do you make of claims about the planes that are on the ground still . Well, the situation is really dangerous in afghanistan right now and we have, for all the people that were helping right now at the eight military bases around the country, almost everyone has family left behind that are trying to get out. What are you hearing from folks who you know here, the folks you work with, about their concerns, about what they may be hearing from the folks left behind . Well, that there is no way out. We have a few problems here. One is that these people who are here now were brought here as parolees, which means they dont have the ability to bring family into the united states very easily. Theres no path for that. So youre not even necessarily entitled to bring your spouse or children, and almost everybody left a spouse or a child behind. Some were even separated on the tarmac in the Crazed Madness of trying to escape. So that is a major concern. We need these people to be treated as refugees under u. S. Law, so they have the ability to reunite with their family, whom they are extremely worried about right now. Even once they have that right, as you just noted, their family are going to have a hard time logistically getting out of the country. I heard from one family Last Night, an siv family, whose siv application, special immigrant Visa Application was almost finalized, their passports were at the u. S. Embassy in kabul. Those passports were burned. Needless to say, they did not get the immigration visa. And they found an Overland Route out of afghanistan. But they said it was so dangerous and harrowing getting there that they cant recommend that to anybody. So given the reality on the ground, what is the best possible thing, as you see it, that the government can do, the u. S. Government can do right now, both for the folks who are there, obviously, but also the folks who are where you are trying to get family in, trying to get resettled . I would say there are two things that need to be done. One is we need to as i just said, we need to start treating these people as refugees. It is possible to process refugees on u. S. Soil under the refugee act. It is not usually done. In fact, its only been done once since the act was passed in 1980. Once you do that, they have access to benefits, assistance, which is important because they literally left with nothing except the clothes on their backs, and even those who left with luggage were separated from their luggage. It gives them the ability to reunite with immediate Family Members and it gives them a pathway to legal residence and to u. S. Citizenship. Right now they dont have that as parolees. So we need to treat them as refugees. The second is that we need to make sure there is a way to get out of afghanistan. The united states and the u. N. Have to negotiate to make sure that there is a humanitarian corridor, that there is a safe way to escape, especially for people who are really vulnerable and for the Family Members of those who are here right now in the united states. That was the best news we got all week, that at least President Biden has finally put somebody in charge of the many agencies that are working really hard to manage this crisis. We desperately needed leadership, and with his Track Record on refugees, with his relationship with other governors, with his ability to lead, thats all we need. Thats exactly what we needed.
