Politicsnation with Al Sharpton. Before we begin tonight, i jUst want to thank yoU, the aUdience, who has followed me throUghoUt the years, and the different time slots. YoU stayed with me. I assUre yoU that every Us'>One Of Us here at politicsnation strives to bring yoU the most profoUnd insight that we can. Of coUrse, it starts with oUr gUests. As always, we have a stellar groUp of voices tonight, the right voices, to articUlate where oUr cUrrent political life affects Us all, yet Understanding that the black commUnity remains the epicenter of oUr nations oldest and most recent traUmas, case in Point T Covid 19 pandemic, which continUes to generate disparate oUtcome for black people, even amid the plagUe that no socializing american can escape this Labor Day Weekend as the biden administration finds itself beset with a crisis of every kind, the backlash of the covid sUrge and afghanistans collapse reflected in president Bidens Approval ratings while his Ure-infrastrUctUre-plan'>SignatUre InfrastrUctUre Plan is in peril from within his own party again. My sympathies aside, this Use'>White HoUse mUst remember that it was the black vote that made it possible, and so the commUnity will continUe to press for the Voter Protections and Police Reform that the president continUes to endorse and the senate repUblicans continUe to choke. Lots of news to cover on this politicsnation tenth Anniversary Show, so lets begin. Joining me now, democratic representative from New York, hakeem jeffries. He is the nUmber three ranked democrat in the hoUse in his capacity as chair of the caUcUs. Congressman, many thanks for yoU joining Us on this festive occasion. Last week, congressman, i marched On Washington with Uther-king'>Martin LUther King iii and 50,000 of Us to fight for Voting Rights as we near the midterms. The hoUse passed voting Rights Legislation last month in the hopes of protecting americans as they head to the Ballot Box. In the face of so many new Voter Restrictions being passed in reddominated states. BUt will this be enoUgh, Congressman Jeffreys . Good to be with yoU, reverend al, and congratUlations on ten years to speaking trUth to power. I certainly think yoUr advocacy, the Marchs Advocacy is an important step in the right direction to keep the pressUre on the congress and specifically the senate to do the right thing as it relates to the John Robert Lewis Voting rights advancement act. I remain hopefUl and optimistic that the democratic senators Understand the Urgency of passing legislation to protect the right to vote in the face of the epidemic of Uppression'>Voter SUppression that we have seen after the Uary-6th'>JanUary 6th insUrrection. Instead of rUnning toward democracy,s have rUn away from democracy, and thats why this legislation is so important. Now, we also faced on Labor Day over 7 Million americans will lose Unemployment-benefits'>Unemployment Benefits as the federal program is set to expire. The Untrys-Unemployment-rate'>CoUntrys Unemployment Rate has gone down, bUt hiring has slowed as the Delta Variant caUses an Uptick in coronavirUs cases across the coUntry. Now, its clear that were still in a pandemic. Is it too soon to be ending this relief while so many continUe to be strUggling . Well, i think its important to monitor the sitUation and continUe to act if necessary. Right now President Biden is advancing an ambitioUs agenda connecting both the bipartisan UctUre-package'>InfrastrUctUre Package that we want to get over the Finish Line in the next few weeks as well as the bUild back better act, that woUld invest sUbstantially in oUr working families, oUr middleclass folks, those who aspire to be part of the middle class, home care, health care, child care, elder care, and making sUre that we invest in americas families in a meaningfUl way. At the same time as yoU point oUt, reverend al, the pandemic will not be over for any of Us Until its over for all of Us both in the context of the pUblic Health Side of the crisis and the economic side of the crisis and to the extent that congress has to act with respect to Unemployment in other areas. We shoUld be prepared to do that. Now, congressman, on top of losing additional Unemployment-benefits'>Unemployment Benefits, some americans also are facing eviction as the Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt rUles 63 to block the extension of the moratoriUm on evictions, allowing landlords to resUme evictions across the coUntry. According to U. S. CensUs last month, approximately 3. 5 million americans are at risk right now of being evicted in the next two months. What can, if anything, lawmakers do now to ensUre that No One becomes homeless . Well, the Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt is oUt of control right now to the extent that they have any credibility left. They continUe to shred it with decision after decision after decision to take Us backward as opposed to moving Us forward. One of the things we need to do is to make sUre that the approximately 46 Billion in relief that congress allocated to provide Emergency Rental Assistance to tenant at risk of eviction as well as their landlords in terms of making sUre that those back payments are made, weve got to get that oUt the door. Only a few billion dollars of that aid has actUally made it oUt. And so were working with the biden administration, the Ury-department'>TreasUry Department to ease some of the restrictive langUage that may have been an obstacle, bUt we have to Urge state after state after state to continUe to do whats necessary. Here in New York city, were thankfUl that Governor Hokele and the Ure'>State LegislatUre came together to extend the moratoriUm throUgh the early part of next year. That shoUld provide sUfficient time to get the relief oUt. BUt in other states, like texas or florida, yoUve got people at risk of eviction, and thats why i think getting this money oUt the door is going to be so critical. Its very critical. Its great roys happening here in New York, bUt that does not mean anything in other states. Thank yoU for being with Us, congressman, hakeem jeffries. Im sUre well see yoU again on politicsnation often. Many thanks again. With me now is democratic Senator Val demings. Let me go right to this qUestion. The Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt denied to hear aboUt the texas antiabortion rights law, which bans all a Ures'>Abortion ProcedUres after six weeks, regardless of rape or incest. Plain concern. Are yoU concerned that roe v. Wade is at high risk of being in jeopardy . Reverend sharpton, first of all, let me congratUlate yoU on yoUr tenth anniversary. Its an honor to be with yoU today. Of coUrse, im concerned. When yoU look at whats going on in the nation, ending americas longest war, yoU spoke with oUr chair aboUt evictions, people being pUt oUt of their homes and no longer receiving Unemployment-benefits'>Unemployment Benefits, bUt the war on women continUes. I think its shamefUl, and i think chairman jeffries was absolUtely correct wrchlt is the Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt becaUse they were always that body historically that woUld make wrongs right. BUt texas, the law is oUt of control, and i know yoUve already heard that florida is already licking their chops, looking at something that coUld be similar. BUt, reverend sharpton, were not going to let this go. The majority of the electorate in florida are women, and i believe this will bring Us together. Weve been looking for that issUe. RepUblicans and democrats believe that women shoUld be able to make their own reprodUctive choices, and were going to fight this with every oUnce of Uence'>Energy And InflUence that we have. And i want to get yoUr reaction on yoUr repUblican Ue-gop-hoUse'>ColleagUe Gop HoUse leader Kevin Mccarthys Behavior this week. He went after the Use-select-committee'>HoUse Select Committee looking at the Uary-6th'>JanUary 6th attack by telling private companies that they reached oUt to do what they had to comply with the investigation, they reached oUt to by the select committee. He went after them aboUt handing over commUnications and Social Media records. I mean actUally in a threatening way, if they cooperated with a select congress investigating, something that coUld lead to criminal behavior. I mean, whats yoUr reaction to a member of congress coming in this way at people that have been asked to cooperate with a select committee of congress . Well, reverend sharpton, leadership will show Up dUring times of crisis. And what happened on Uary-6th'>JanUary 6th was certainly a crisis. Look. Kevin mccarthy has a problem. Despite his efforts to shUt down any investigation at all, voted against the independent commission. And now to have the aUdacity to threaten Social Media companies to say that becaUse all that Chairman Thompson did from the select committee was ask that those records be preserved. Thats what yoU woUld do in any investigation within congress, criminal or otherwise. The records are preserved. Look. It was mccarthy who shared he had a conversation with the president on Uary-6th'>JanUary 6th, begging and pleading with the president to talk to the nation, talk to the insUrrectionists, and get them to stop it. And so his threats are UsefUl. Theyre ridicUloUs. And he needs to be carefUl becaUse i know that he will be a major part of this investigation, and so i think hell be qUestioned enoUgh. He does not need to give the committee additional qUestions aboUt his efforts to obstrUct the release of any records. JUst for clarity, when yoU say he talked to the president on Uary-6th'>JanUary 6th, yoUre talking aboUt president Ump'>Donald TrUmp. This is before biden was sworn in later that month. Thats absolUtely correct. On Uary-6th'>JanUary 6th, when they were really trying to stop President Biden and Vice President harris from being sworn in. Now, the 20th Anniversary of September 11th is coming Up. As a member of the Urity-commission'>Homeland SecUrity Commission and as a former police chief, when yoU reflect on that dark tragic day, what are yoU thinking aboUt, congresswoman . Reverend sharpton, i was assigned to the Orlando International Airport on 9 11, and ill never forget that morning shortly before 9 00. One of my Police Officers walked intomy office and said one of the planes flew into one of the World Trade towers. We as a world watched the second plane fly. This is something i have been involved in in that capacity from the very beginning, working with the Uthority-t'>Airport AUthority T international airport aUthority, and national Uthority-t'>Airport AUthority That i was involved in dUring that time, really trying to make sUre that the traveling pUblic was safe and that an attack of this natUre woUld never happen again. And so, yoU know, as we reflect, it is a sad time, bUt were also looking at the progress that weve made. In a hearing jUst this week, we talked aboUt the department of Urity'>Homeland SecUrity and some of the changes that have been made to that department, bUt changes that still need to be made. The bottom line, reverend sharpton, weve got to make Ure-america'>SUre America is never attacked again in sUch a vicioUs and cowardly way. Thank yoU, congresswoman, val demings. Please come back and be a gUest as often as yoU can on politicsnation. Thank yoU. Now we bring in one who i respect probably more than most if i coUld coUnt three people they say have a good work in pUblic life. Shed probably be two of them. Valerie jarrett, the former senior adviser to barack obama. Thank yoU for joining Us this evening, miss jarrett. And i want to go back to texas with yoU, and yoUll know why. As i mentioned earlier, the state has made every Utional-abortion-rights'>Texan A Vigilante In Enforing Their ConstitUtional Abortion Rights ban. YoUre on the board of the ridesharing company lyft, which annoUnced it woUld cover 100 of legal fees for any driver sUed Under sb8, which is this state measUre, for driving someone to an abortion procedUre, plUs a 1 Million donation to planned parenthood. Since Utional-law'>Thisness ConstitUtional Law relies on private citizens to enforce it. Are we going to have to rely on private companies to fight this, miss jarrett . First of all, reverend sharpton, good evening and congratUlations to ten years. I think back to terrell days on yoUr show. I appeared on yoUr show. I dont think either yoU or i back then woUld have thoUght that texas or any other state woUld pass sUch an egregioUs law that pUts into the hands of people basically, yoU know, forfeiting the responsibilities of government, bUt says everybody can go and enforce this law on their own. So imagine yoUre driving a Lyft And Somebody gets in yoUr car, and yoU plUg in the address and yoU take them there. Are yoU sUpposed to say, are yoU on yoUr way to get an abortion . Are yoU six weeks along . If yoU are six weeks along, yoU have to get oUt of the car, or i coUld be fined Up to 10,000. Thats whats going throUgh the minds of oUr drivers, so im very, very proUd for lyft stepping Up to the plate and saying thats Unacceptable and protecting the drivers and go fUrther to say we have to protect organizations and women, many withoUt access to health care. This law woUld be particUlarly Ee Greerjs reverend sharpton, for women who are poor. Women who are healthy can go to another state. Were seeing an increasing nUmber of states trying to pass this law, bUt for the poor women of texas, this is oUtrageoUs. Yes, the answer to yoUr qUestion is bUsinesses need to step Up to the plate. Women in office in texas, they need to step Up to the plate. All of oUr voices have to be heard on this issUe. Now, this is a Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt where five of the nine jUstices were appointed by president s who did not win the popUlar vote. JUstice Ustice'>Alito And JUstice chief jUstice roberts were appointed by george w. BUsh in his first term, and jUstices gorsUch, kavanaUgh, and barrett were appointed by trUmp. They along with jUstice thomas seem ready to gUt abortion rights, lgbtq rights, and more. Is there any way to stop this, or are we stUck in this antidemocratic coUrt Until another election . Elections have conseqUences. Nobody has liked to talk aboUt jUdges and how important they are. Every american is impacted by the decisions that the coUrt makes, inclUding the highest coUrt, the Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt, and the president has the aUthority do what theyve done. Were stUck with them in their lifetime appointments. This is one of the many reasons why we have to encoUrage people to tUrn oUt and vote. YoU mentioned votes righting. It is absolUtely Under attack. Weve got to get congress to pass laws that will pUt back in place what was gUtted when the case was decided by the Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt that got rid of sUch a thing. We have to pUt it back and make sUre States Today pUshing back, theyre disenfranchiing people of color and yoUng people. We need gUardrails at the federal level to keep that from having, and we have to have affirmative laws that make it easier to vote. All of these cases end Up before the Upreme-coUrt'>SUpreme CoUrt if theres a constitUtional issUe that needs to be addressed. So, yes, vote for the president , bUt also vote for members of congress. Vote for yoUr Utors'>State ProsecUtors Up and down the ballot. Its important to show Up and vote, or yoUr life coUld be at stake. As yoU mentioned, this is the tenth year tenth Anniversary Show of politicsnation. The world looks very different now than it did a decade ago. As a freqUent gUest, a friend of the show, do yoU have any advice for Us for the next ten years . I sUre do, reverend sharpton. Please keep doing exactly what yoUre doing. Its so important that yoUr viewers are informed, that yoU have gUests who Come On, and yoU have a very dynamic constrUctive conversation so that they can make decisions on their own, and so yoUr platform provide as wonderfUl forUm for people to get the information they need to go oUt and make their Untry-and-world'>CoUntry And World better. Keep doing what yoUre doing. YoUr voices and the voices of yoUr gUests are necessary for the people to hear. Thank yoU for that. I might take personal privilege and say one of the proUdest things in the ten Years Weve had is the last sitting interview that President Obama did before the election that led to the election of the new president. He was trying to get voters oUt right before election day, right before he officially became the lamedUck president , the President Elect in 2016. Thank yoU, valerie jarrett. Theres a lot more coming on this edition of politicsnation. A look back at some Uplifting moment from oUr weekly Up'>Rise Up. BUt first a message from oUr friends at Morning Joe. Brieng hUmanity, heart, and soUl to politicsnation. Thank yoU. We love yoU. Wow. A big thanks to the Morning Joe team. Lets tUrn to my colleagUe Ui'>Richard LUi with todays other top stories. BUt on top of all of that, hosting this incredible Tv Show that really is always bringing new stUff to the table, always covering Stories Nobody else is talking aboUt Until rev al brings them to the table and starts a conversation. My friend, if theres a secret to how yoU get it all done withoUt visibly breaking a sweat, i woUld pay good money for that secret. The Rachel Show make 13 years on air this coming week, so let me be the first to say congratUlations, and here is to many more years to come to my friend, sister rachel. Now for this weeks Up'>Rise Up. I wanted to do a qUick look back over the last seven months when the former president was voted oUt of the Use'>White HoUse. We knew it was time to retire the memo to trUmps segment and replace it with the segment of pUrpose. Today im introdUcing a new segment called Up'>Rise Up. It will be a recUrring call to action. The history of black america is a history of rising Up against bondage, seg fwregation, violence, and disenfranchisement. The battlefield for racial jUstice is as widespread as we are in the Streets N the coUrts, and at the Ballot Box. There are people alive today becaUse we marched in peacefUl protest. And heres the hard trUth aboUt fighting for jUstice. YoU dont get to opt oUt when the times get toUgh. Only by rising Up together and declaring oUr solidarity with one voice can we finally begin the process of eradicating the scoUrge of racism and white Upremacy-hatred'>SUpremacy Hatred in this coUntry. Add yoUr voice to the recall for reform on Social Media. Leave no room for bigotry on yoUr page or in yoUr life. The assaUlt on Ballot Box access is a fivealarm fire, and its time we start acting like it. We can doUse the flames of deflection with the power of action bUt only if we Up'>Rise Up together. Get organized, get elected, get even. Make yoUr voice heard becaUse the fUtUre of yoUr children and this coUntry depends on it. Well only get oUt of this pandemic if we all rise together and get this shot. Together we can relegate it to the Ust-bin'>DUst Bin of history where it belongs. Its been over 200 years since oUr foUnders ratified the constitUtion and coUntless lives have been lost in the strUggle to ensUre that we the people means all the people. American history is livid with shamefUl policies, bUt it is also filled with freedom fighters. To teach oUr Children Anything else is to rob them of their heritage and the trUth, and they deserve Bet Jeer we all deserve better. We deserve the trUth. We deserve oUr votes, and we deserve the life, liberty, and UrsUit-of-happiness'>PUrsUit Of Happiness promised to Us in that declaration of independence, and if we keep rising Up for ten more years and beyond, we can continUe the Long March toward jUstice together. After the break, the cUrrent state of criminal Ustice-reform'>JUstice Reform and the fight to end brUtality. BUt first im told my Ue-and-sister'>ColleagUe And Sister Joy Reid has a message for me. OUr next two gUests are familiar faces on this show. Gwen Car And Dr. Eric dighton, professor of africanamerican stUdies at vanderbilt University. Hes also the aUthor of the foUrth coming book, entertains race black in america. Let me go to yoU first, gwen. For the past Decade Weve tried to give yoU a voice that has been sidelined by the political process. YoUve been at the center of Police Reform since the killing of yoUr son Eric Garner dUe to a Choke Hold by the city police. Where have yoU foUnd the strength to keep going . Well, first of all, reverend, i want to congratUlate yoU on ten years. First of all, its yoU, getting my strength from hearing yoU, hearing what yoU have to say, Us-black-history-lessons'>Fiving Us Black History Lessons every week, and i got inspire and empowered, and, yoU know, i said, i want to keep Up the fight, keep my Sons Name alive, and i think this is the way to do it. So here we are seven years later, and were still together. Seven years ago is when yoU lost yoUr Uve'>Son And YoUve become a leader in yoUr own right and yoU have appeared every satUrday and have often done this show. YoU have really become a force. Dr. Dyson, yoU didnt know i was going to promote yoUr Upcoming book, bUt we stay on top of each others careers. Yes, sir. YoUve been one of the most powerfUl voices for Black Americans in recent years, and yoUre aboUt to release this book, the Uve'>24th Book YoUve written, this one called entertaining race what inspires yoU. 24 books all over the world. What inspired yoU do this important work . Well, first of all, i want to join sister carr. Also great to see her and be in her presence. God bless her for her stalwart activity. Theres a lot of talk aboUt being the g. O. A. T. , the greatest of all time. Were talking to one of the g. O. A. T. S of this commUnity, the reverend Al Sharpton. YoU really are oUr inspiration. Aint nobody going to bed earlier than yoU, getting Up earlier than yoU. YoU are the inexhaUstible reservoir of the good will that yoU have. High intelligence, rhetorical fUry, the ability to talk aboUt intractable and social issUes and to bring to bear Upon them a broad range of historic legacies, of Ustice'>Social JUstice and resistance, is an inspiration to all of U. In fact, one of the chapters in my book is on the reverend Al Sharpton becaUse yoU inspire Us, Uplift Us, and call Us to responsibility. As an intellectUal, a pUblic intellectUal, i started late in college. I was a teen father. I didnt go to school Until i was 21 years old, hUstled in the streets, lived on welfare, didnt get my degree Until i was 26 years old and then went to gradUate school. BUt since that time ive tried to make Up for lost time as a professor, a preacher, an activist, social intellectUal. This book is a Man Phen Nation of that intense involvemonthold and social resistance and the determine lgs to Use literacy and the word to Uplift Us. Theres been no soldier stronger in trUth and democracy. What yoUre doing is Unprecedented. The black leader in oUr commUnity with also a Television Show and a Radio Show to amplify the voices of those who are most vUlnerable and those who are least recognized is an extraordinary testimony to yoUr geniUs and to yoUr commitment to oUr commUnity. Well, thank yoU for that. I am old enoUgh to remember when somebody called yoU a g. O. A. T. WoUld be insUlting, bUt now it means something else. Let me say as we face these challenges that we face today, gwen, yoU were with Us last satUrday as we letd this march aroUnd Voting Rights. Tens of thoUsands. Cbs said it with Us 50,000. YoUre there every rally, every march. Were facing critical times where the very democracy that this coUntry claims is at risk here, and do yoU think people really Understand how serioUs times are when were looking at voting being Undermined, police being given a way oUt of being held accoUntable . Do yoU think people really Understand the danker that were in . Well, reverend al, so people do. Most dont. This is why we have to get oUt here and we have to pUsh. We have to let them know the danger, the criticalness of it for Us to vote. AbsolUtely. For Us to register to vote becaUse i dont think people are walking aroUnd saying voting doesnt matter. Voting matters in every aspect of the word, and they jUst dont Understand it. Theyre walking aroUnd with their heads in the cloUds, bUt theyve got to get their heads oUt of the cloUds. Im oUt of time, bUtting michael dyson, are we in an Existential Crisis . . We are.
