Good evening, and welcome to this very, very Special Edition of Politics Nation. Tonights lead, tenth anniversary. Right now im a mix of emotions because in the last in the midst of last Weeks News of every kind, i celebrated my tenth year as the host of this program, Politics Nation with Al Sharpton. And before we begin tonight i just want to thank you, the audience, who has followed me throughout the years and the different time slots. You stayed with me. I assure you that every One Of Us here at Politics Nation strives to bring you the most profound insight we can. Of course, it starts with our guests. And as always, we have a stellar group of voices tonight. The right voices to articulate where our current political life affects us all. Yet understanding that the black community remains the epicenter of our nations oldest and most recent traumas. Case in point, the covid19 pandemic, which continues to generate disparate outcomes for Black Americans. As the biden administration finds itself beset with a crisis of every kind, the backlash of Covids Surge and afghanistans collapse reflecting in president Bidens Approval ratings, while his Signature Infrastructure Plan is in peril from within his own party again. My sympathies aside, this White House must remember that it was the black vote that made it possible. And so the community will continue to press for the Voter Protections and Police Reform that the president continues to endorse and the senate republicans continue to choke. Lots of news to cover on this Police Nation tenth Anniversary Show. So lets begin. Joining me now, democratic representative from New York, hakim jeffries. He is the number three ranked democrat In The House in his capacity as chair of the caucus. Congressman, many things for you joining us on this festive occasion. Last week, congressman, i marched On Washington with Martin Luther King iii and 50,000 of us to fight for Voting Rights as we near the mid terms. The house passed voting Rights Legislation last month in hopes of protecting americans as they head to the Ballot Box in the face of so many new Voter Restrictions being passed in reddominated states. But will this be enough, congressman jeffries . Great to be with you reverendal. Congratulations on ten years of speaking truth to power. I certainly think this your advocacy, the Marchs Advocacy is an important step in the right direction to keep the pressure on the congress, and specifically, the senate, to do the right thing as it relates to the John Robert Lewis Voting rights advancement act. I remain hopeful and optimistic that the democratic senators understand the urgency of passing legislation to protect the right to vote in the face of the epidemic of Voter Suppression that we have seen after the January 6th insurrection. Instead of running toward democracy, republicans have run away from democracy. And thats why this legislation is so important. Now we also face, on labor day, over 7 Million americans will lose Unemployment Benefits as the federal program is set to expire. The Countrys Unemployment Rate has gone down, but hiring has slowed as the Delta Variant causes an uptick in coronavirus cases across the country. Its clear that we are still in a pandemic. Is it too soon to be ending this relief while so many continue to be struggling . I think it is important that we continue to monitor the situation and be prepared to act if necessary. Right now, President Biden is advancing an ambitious agenda connected to both the bipartisan Infrastructure Package that we want to get over the Finish Line in the next few weeks as well as the build back better act that would invest substantially in our working families, our middle class folks, those who aspire to be part of the middle class, home care, Health Care, child care, and Elder Care and making sure we invest in americas families in a meaningful way. At the same time, as you point out, the pandemic will not be over for any of us until it is over for All Of Us both in the context of the Human Side of the crisis and the economic side of the crisis. Congress needs to act and be prepared in all of those areas. We should be prepared to do that. On top of losing Unemployment Benefits some americans are also facing eviction as the Supreme Court ruled 63 to block the extension of the moratorium on evictions, allowing landlords to resume evictions across the country. According to u. S. Census data from last month, approximately 3. 5 million americans are at risk right now of Being Econvicted in the next evicted in the next two months. What, if anything, can lawmakers do right now to make sure No One becomes homeless . The Supreme Court is out of control right now, to the extent they have any credibility left they continue to sled it with decision after decision after decision to take us backward as opposed to moving us forward. One of the things that we need to do is to make sure that the approximately 46 Billion in relief that congress allocated to provide Emergency Rental Assistance to tenants at risk of eviction as well as their landlords in terms of making sure that those back payments are made we have got to get that out the door. Only a few billion dollars of that aid has actually made it out. So we are working with the biden administration, the Treasury Department to ease some of the restrictive language that may have been an obstacle. But we also have to urge state after state after state to continue to do whats necessary. Here in new York State we are thankful that Governor Hochul and the State Legislature came together to extend the moratorium through the early part of next yooek. That should provide sufficient time get the relief out. But in other states, like texas or florida, you have got people at risk of eviction. Thats why i think getting this money out the door is going to be so critical. It is very critical. Its great what is happening here in New York, but that does not mean anything in other states. Thank you for being with us, congressman hakim jeffries. I am sure we will see you again on Politics Nation. Often. Many things again. With we now is democratic candidate from Florida Val demings. The senate denied hearing about the antiabortion law which bans abortions after six weeks, regardless of whether the pregnancy was caused by rape or other violent means. Do you believe Roe Versus Wade is in high risk of being in jeopardy. Reverend, first let me congratulate you on your tenth anniversary. It is a honor to be with you today. Of course i am concerned. When you look at whats going on in our nation. We just ended americas longest war. You just spoke about evictions people being put out of their homes, no longer receiving Unemployment Benefits. But the war on women continues. I think it is shameful and i think chairman jeffries is absolutely correct. Where is the Supreme Court . They were historically the body that would make wrongs right. In texas the law is already out of control. I know you heard florida is already licking their beside chops looking at something that could be similar. But reverend we are not going to let this go. The majority of the electorate in florida are women. I believe this will bring us together. We have been looking at that issue. Republicans and democrats believe that women should be able to make their own reproductive choices. We are going to fight this with every ounce of Energy And Influence that we have. I want to get your reaction on your republican Colleague Gop House leader Kevin Mccarthys Behavior this week. He went of a the House Select Committee looking into the January 6th attack by telling private companies that they were reach out to to do what they had to comply with the investigation they were reached out to by the select committee. He went after them about them handing over communications and Social Media records. I mean, actually, in a threatening way, that if they cooperated with a select committee of congress investigating something that could lead to criminal behavior. I mean, whats your reaction to a member of congress coming in this way at people who have been asked to cooperate with a select committee of congress . Reverend sharpton, leadership will show up during times of crisis. And what happened on January 6th was certainly a crisis. Look, Kevin Mccarthy has a problem. In spite his efforts to shut down any investigation at all, voted against the independent commission, and now to have the audacity to threaten the Social Media companies the say that because all the chairman all Chairman Thompson did from the select committee was to ask that those records be preserved. Thats what you would do in any investigation within congress, criminal or otherwise, ask that the records be preserved. It was mccarthy who shared that he had had a conversation with the president on January 6th begging and pleading with the president to talk to the nation, talk to the insurrectionists and get them to stop it. So his threats are useless. Er the ridiculous. He needs to be careful because i know that he will be a major part of this information. So i think he will be questioned enough. He does not need to give the committee additional questions about his efforts to obstruct the release of any records. Just for clarity, when you say that he talked to the president on January 6th, you were talking about president Donald Trump. This was before biden was sworn in later that month . Thats absolutely correct. On january th when they were really trying to stop President Biden and Vice President harris from being sworn in. The 20th Anniversary of September 11th is coming upl. As a emin of the Homeland Security Committee and as a former Police Chief when you reflect on that dark, tragic day, what are you thinking about, congresswoman . Reverend sharpton, i was assigned to the Orlando International Airport on 9 11. I will never forget that morning, shortly before 9 00, one of my Police Officers walked into my office and said that a plane had just flown into one of the World Trade Center towers. As we walked back to the Break Room to continue to watch on television, we, along with, i think, The World, watched the second plane fly. So this is something that i have been involved in in that capacity from the very beginning working with the airport, the international Airport Authority, and national Airport Authority that i was involved in during that time really trying to make sure that the traveling public was safe and that an attack of this nature would never happen again. And so, you know, as we reflect, it is a sad time. But we are also looking at the progress that we made in the hearing just this week we talked about the department of Homeland Security and some of the changes that have been made to that department, but changes that still need to be made. The bottom line, Reverend Sharpton, we have got to make Sure America is never attacked did end in such a vicious and cowardly way. Thank you congresswoman val demings. Please come back and be a guest as often as you can on Politics Nation. Thank you. Now we bring in one what i have respected probably more than most, if i could count three people that i say have a good word that have been in public life she would be two of them. Valerie jarrett, senior visor to president barack obama. Thank you for joining us. I want to go back the texas with you. As i mentioned earlier, the state has made every texan a vigilante in enforcing their unconstitutional Abortion Rights ban. You are on the board the ride sharing company, lyft, which announced it would cover 100 of legal fees for any driver sued sb8, which is this State Measure for driving someone to on abortion procedure. Plus a 1 Million donation to planned parent hoot. Since this Uninstitutional Law relies on private citizens to enforce it. Are we going to have to rely on private ms. Jarrett . First of all, Reverend Sharpton, good evening. And zbags on ten years on the air. I think back to your early days on your show. And i appeared on your show. I dont think either you or eye would have thought back then that texas or any other state would pass such an egregious law that puts into the hands of the people basically forfeiting the responsibilities of government, but says everybody can go and enforce this law. Imagine you are driving a Lyft And Somebody gets in your car and you plug in the address and you take them there. Are you supposed to say you are on your way to go gn get an abortion . Are you six weeks along . If you are sick weeks along, well you have to get out of the car or i could be fined up to 10,000. Thats whats going through the minds of our drivers. I am very, very proud of lyft for stepping up to the plate saying this is unacceptable and we have to protect our drivers. And going another step further saying we have to protect organizations that are providing basic Health Care to women many of whom without planned Parenthood Wouldnt have access to Health Care. And this law is particularly egregious against women who are poor. Women who are wealthy can go the another state. Althougher with seeing an increasing number of states trying the pass these laws. But for the poor women in texas this is outrageous. The answer to your question, yes, business needs to step up to the plate. Local Elected Officials in tex, you just heard Congresswoman Determination say how many there are. Women in texas, they need to step up to the plate. All of our voices have to be heard on this issue. Now, this is a Supreme Court where five of the nine justices were appointed by president s who did not win the popular vote. Justice alito and Chief Justice Roberts were appointed by george w. Bush in his first term. And justices gorsuch, Cavanaugh And Barrett were appointed by trump. They along with justice thomas seem ready to gut Voting Rights, lgbtq rights, Abortion Rights, and more. Is there any way to stop this or are we stuck in this antidemocratic court for another generation . You know what, reverent sharpton, elections have consequences. Nobody really liked to talk about judges over the last decades and how important they are. But every american is impacted by the decisions that the courts make, including the very important highest court, the Supreme Court. And the president has the start to do just what the president s who appointed this bench have done. And they have been confirmed by the senate. So we are stuck with them. They are lifetime appointments. This is why, one of the many reasons why we have to encourage people to turn out and vote. You mentioned Voting Rights. It is absolutely under attack. We have got to get congress to pass laws that will protect, they will put back in place what was gutted when the case was decided by the Supreme Court that got rid of section five. We have to put that back and make sure that those states right now today are passing laws we know are intended to disenfranchise people of color, we know are intended to disenfranchise young people. We need guardrails at the federal level to keep that from happening. Then we also have to have laws that affirmatively make it easier for people vote. All of these cases end up before the Supreme Court if there is a constitutional issue that needs to be addressed. So, yes, vote for the president. But also vote for members of congress. Right. Vote for your state prosecutors. Up and down the ballot, it is important to show up and vote. Or your live could be at stake. This is the tenth Anniversary Show of Politics Nation. As a frequent guest, a friends of this show, do you have any advice for us for the next ten years . I sure do, Reverend Sharpton, please keep doing exactly what you are doing. It is so important that your viewers are informed that you have guests that come on and you have a dynamic, constructive conversation so they can make decisions on their own. So your platform provides a wonderful forum for people to get the information they need to go out and try to be a force for good and make our country and make our world better. I say to you Reverend Sharpton just please keep doing exactly what you are doing. Your voice and the voice of your guests are necessary for american people to hear. Thank you for that. I might take personal privilege and say one of the proudest things we had in the ten years is the last sitting interview that President Obama did before the election that led to him being a lame Duck President you arranged to be done on this show. That was one of the highlights of our show. He was in North Carolina as he was trying to get voters out right before Election Day right before he officially became the lame Duck President and we had a President Elect in 2016. We will never forget you for arranging that. Thank you former obama senior adviser valerie jarrett. More to come. A look back at some uplifting moments from our weekly Rise Up. I mean, and its the stuff that you see, its hosting marches, and giving sermons, and outorganizing everyone even half his age while also still finding time to work out. But on top of all of that, hosting this incredible Tv Show that really is always bringing new stuff to the table, always covering Stories Nobody else is talking about until rev al brings them to the table and starts the conversation. My friend, if there is a secret to how you get it all done all so well without ever visibly breaking a sweat i would pay good money for that secret. I have a feeling it is kinds of just you being you, but let me in on some of that. Rev, congratulations on ten years here. It is an absolute honor to call you a colleague . That was The One And Only Rachel Maddow with some kind words about the tenth anniversary of Politics Nation. Rachels show makes 13 years on the air this coming week. Let me be the first to say congratulations. And heres to many more years to come to my friend sister rachel. Now for this weeks Rise Up, i wanted to do a quick look back over the last seven months. When the former president was voted out of the White House, we knew it was time to retire the memo to Trump Segment and replace with it a segment of purpose. Today i am introducing a new segment, called Rise Up. It will be a recurring call to action. The history of black america is a history of rising up against bondage, segregation, violence, and disenfranchisement. The battlefield for racial justice is as widespread as we are. In the streets, and in the courts, and at the Ballot Box. There are people alive today because we marched in peaceful protest. Heres the hard truth about fighting for justice. You dont get to opt out when the times get tough. Only by rising up together and declaring our solidarity with one voice can we finally begin the process of eradicating the scourge of racism and white Supremacist Hatred in this country. Add your voice to the call for reform on Social Media. Leave no room for bigotry on your page or in your life. The assault on Ballot Box access is a fivealarm fire, and its time we start acting like it. We can dose the flames of suppression with the power of collective action, but only if we keep rising up together. Get organized. Get elected. And get even. Make your voice heard. Because the future of your children and this country depends on it. We will only get out of this pandemic if we all Rise Up together and get that shot. Together, we can relegate the Death Penalty to the Dust Bin of history, where it belongs. It has been over 200 years since our founders ratified the constitution, and countless lives have been lost in the struggle to ensure that we, the people, means all the people. American history is littered with shameful policies. But it is also filled with freedom fighters. To teach our Children Anything else is to rob them of their heritage and the truth. And they deserve better. We all deserve better. We deserve the truth. We deserve our votes. And we deserve the life, liberty, and Pursuit Of Happiness promised to us in that declaration of independence. And if we keep rising up for ten more years and beyond, we can continue the Long March toward justice together. After the break, the current state of criminal Justice Reform and the fight to end brutality. First im told my colleague and little sister, Joy Reid has a message for me. Big brother reverend Al Sharpton what can i say about ten years of Politics Nation . Well, basically what i can say is that it has allowed viewers on msnbc to get just a taste of the Advocacy And Love for our community that you have shown those of us who came up in New York and lived in New York and really were rescued by you for so many years. Its allowed people to see that you not only can do the activism in the streets but that you can talk policy and politics on tv just as well. Big brother rev, i love you. Im so proud of you. Im so excited about Politics Nation for another ten years. And i just want to say thank you for being you, for being my personal hero and for doing what you do. Congratulations, love you, big brother, rev. Brother, rev music playing. Theres an america we build and one we explore one thats been paved and one thats forever wild but freedom means you dont have to choose just one adventure you get both. Introducing the Allnew 3row Jeep grand cherokee l jeep. Theres only one. For msnbc and for me personally rev rend al and of course Politics Nation has been a powerful voice. No one has done more to try to complete the centuries old promise of equal justice under the law and hold candidates and Elected Officials accountable. We need you reverend al, now more than ever. Congratulations. Our deepest thanks to you, rev, for all you do, and for your passion for giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Well, thank you so much to nbc veteran Andrea Mitchell for your support. And thank you for joining us for this special tenth Anniversary Edition of Politics Nation. Our next two guests are familiar faces on this program. Gwen carr, the mother of the late Eric Garner and dr. Michael dyson distinguished University Professor of africanamerican studies at vender built university. He is also the author of the forthcoming book entertaining race, Performing Blackness In America let me go to you first, gwen, because im honored that you joined us tonight. For the past decade we have tried to give people a voice who were sidelined by the political process. You have been in the center of the fight for Police Reform since the killing of your son, Eric Garner, by a Choke Hold by new York City police. Where have you found the strength to keep going . Well, first of all, rev, i want to congratulate you on your ten years. But, actually, it was you, just getting my strength from listening to you, and hearing the things you had to say, giving us history lessons, Black History Lessons every week. I got inspired and empowered. And i says, you know, i just want to keep up the fight. I want to keep my Sons Name alive. And i think this is the way we do it. Here we are, seven years later we are together. Seven years ago you lost your son and you have been a leader in your own right. You have often done this show. You have become a force. Dr. Dyson, you didnt know i was going to promote your upcoming book but we stay on top of one anothers careers. Yes, sir. You have been one of the most powerful voices for Black Americans in recent years. You are about to release this book, the 24th Book you have written, this one called entertaining race. What inspires you. 24 books, all over The World lecturing. What inspires you doing this important work . First i want to join sister carr, always great to see her and be in her Presence And God bless her for her stalwart activity. And now i want to talk about the g. O. A. T. , the greatest of all time. You are inspiration. Aint nobody getting up earlier than you, going to bed later than you, like jesse jackson, you are indefatigable. The ability to concentrate serious intelligence upon intractable social issues, and the bring to bear upon them a broad range of historic legacies, of social Justice And Resistance is inspiration to All Of Us. In fact one of the chapters in my book is on the reverend Al Sharpton because you continue to inspire us, Up Lift us inspire us. In my own trajectory as a public intellectual, i started late in college. I was a teen father. I didnt go to school until i was 21 years old. Hustled on the streets, lived on welfare. Got my degree when i was 26 years old, then went to graduate school. Since that time i tried to make up for lost time as a professor, as a preacher, as a social activist, as a public intellectual this. Book is the manifestation of that intense involvement with the traditions of social resistance and the determination to use literally and the word to uplift us. But there has been no stronger soldier of justice, truth, and democracy in our own time. What you are doing is unprecedented. A black leader, the black leader in our community, with also a tell vision show, and a Radio Show to amplify the voices of those who are most vulnerable and those who are least recognized is an extraordinary testimony to your genius and to our commitment to our community. Well, thank you for that. I am old enough to remember when somebody calling you a g. O. A. T. Would be insulting. Now it means something else. Let me say, as we face these challenges that we face today, gwen, you were with us last saturday, Mart Iii and Andrea King as we led 50,000 you are there every rally, every march. We are facing critical times where the very democracy that this country claims is at risk here. And do you think people really understand how serious times are when we are looking at voting being undermined, police being given a way out of being held accountable . Do you think people really understand the danger that we are in . Well, reverend al, some people do. I think most dont. And this is why we have to get out here and we have to push. We have to let them know the danger, the criticalness that is for us to vote, for us to register to vote. Because i dont think people are walking around saying voting doesnt matter. Voting matters in every aspect of the word. And they just dont understand. They are walking around with their heads in the clouds. But they have got to get their Heads Out Of The Clouds . I am out of time. Michael dyson, are we in an Existential Crisis here . There is no doubt. An Existential Crisis, a political crisis, a spiritual crisis and a moral crisis, thats why leadership of your Ilk Brand and variety is meaningful to us as we uplift the great truths of our democracy and of our people together. Gwen and michael, thank you both for being with us on this Anniversary Show. Okay. We are not taking a break. Its time now for a look back at the last ten years of Politics Nation. But not before we first hear from my good friends and colleagues, jonathan capehart, followed by msnbcs ali velshi. Congratulations reverend al, on ten years of Politics Nation. In that time you have brought your voice and moral clarity to our national political discourse. I have been covering you and your voice for nearly 30 years back in my days a the Daily News when you were challenging the establishment, speaking to truth even as your stature grew. Thats the secret sauce of your success and the longevity of Politics Nation, staying true to your values and remaining focused on whats right, fair, and just. Heres to many more years, my friend. All right. So reverend als impact on the country on msnbc, thats well documented. Nothing for me the add. But on a very personal level, particularly in the last few years when we really needed his analysis any time i have asked or called, the reverend to come on and provide the kinds of analysis that we need and that i rely on, he has done so. He has called from the gym, from a hotel room. I think he called from a Subway Car once. Heres to all that you do for us, and heres to another great ten years and beyond for you. Well, thank you both for your messageless. I made a promise on my very first Politics Nation show to say what i mean and mean what i say. A decade later a decade of shows later, i havent strayed from that promise. Here are ten years in four minutes. Welcome to Politics Nation, im Al Sharpton. Tonights lead. Tonights lead. Tonights lead. Im live tonight in orlando, florida. From selma, alabama. Downtown minneapolis. From columbia, south korea. Live from the legendary Apollo Theater in harlem, new York City. Progress is never made overnight. Yes, there are going to be times where compromises need to be made. The sensitivity, i think that we have, is whoever selected that black women be clearly seen as qualified to be Vice President. I assure you that over the more than a dozen women that i have taken an initial look at there are significantly more than one black women thats going to be considered by this group. Vice president of the united states, the honorable kamala harris. Dont let covid get us. Lets get the vaccine instead. Reverend sharpton thank you for your question about your children. Can we get rid of the Phil Buster . Is that something the caucus has to debate . We will put our heads together and decide how the best way of getting change is, but change, we must. How do you assess Donald Trump in a kingian kind of analysis as one that walked shoulder to shoulder with dr. King . I dont believe this man really understand what Martin Luther King jr. Was all about. Stevy wonder, where do you start in you have done it all. Spike lee, thank you. Always. In the house, the queen of soul, miss arethat franklin. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you for having me. Policing is the critical civil Rights Issue aside from voting protection. Those two issues of the issues of 21st century. Absolutely, reverend al. This will be george floyds legacy. They can say what they want but i am always going to be seeking the truth. One of the Things Dad did, if somebody was 90 bad, he didnt focus on the 90 bad but he focused on the 10 good and extracted that from the people. It is the tenth Annual Revy Awards from rockefeller center. Herself your host, Al Sharpton. Im handing out blueberry pie slices. I decided to hand out a few extra slice awards this year. This weeksmembero to trump, what would you know about strength . You were born with a Silver Spoon in your mouth and then spent every day of your pathetic life whining it wasnt gold. Even though you and i were born and raised in the same city heres how we are different. You can dish it but you certainly cant take it. I got you. I got you. By the way, i got you. I got you. If our voices didnt matter, they wouldnt be trying so hard to silence them. Social justice is a team sport. Now that we know exactly how effective we can be together, we have to keep going, keep rising up together, marching peacefully, and demanding that this country finally deliver on its essential Promise Liberty and justice for all. That does it for me. Thanks for watching. I will see you back here tomorrow at 5 00 p. M. Eastern. Blackhawk blackhawk. Up next my final thoughts on the next ten years to come. But we cant go to break without hearing from someone near and dear to me. Thats tiffani cross. Reverend, i want to wish you a wonderful happy tenyear anniversary on Politics Nation.
