And a suspect in custody but the motive still a mystery. Well have the latest on that. And millions of americans set to lose Unemployment Benefits in a matter of hours as the Biden Administration works to get them help before it is too late. New outrage over Kevin Mccarthy and attempts to rewrite history. Why the January 6 committee is firing back over comments about Donald Trump. And as President Biden prepares to visit more scenes of weather disaster, the ugly truth that america is not prepared for Climate Change having an impact right now. But we do want to begin with a tragic news out of the state of florida. Polk county to be specific. Where four people including one baby as young as three months of age are dead after a Shooting Rampage at a home there. Officers say the suspect who is now in custody fired dozens of ammunition rounds at policesurr. And we heard from the sheriff who gave an update. Lets listen. Lieutenant Tompkinss Fors his way into the horse. And immediately confronted with this same person who now is wearing bulletproof vest, camo, knee protection, Head Protection and there is a shootout. Air support there and Air Support notices a guy coming out of the house, notifies the perimeter units. And he has his hands up. He surrenders and it is our suspect. Want to bring in Jim Cavanaugh to talk more about this. Lets talk about some of the details that we learned from this press conference. So from our understanding, there is no connection between the shooter and the family as of yet. Were also learning that the shooter or the suspect i should say is an afghan and iraqi vet. He was a sharpshooter honorably discharged. And his girlfriend who has been interviewed said that he has ptsd. And said just a week ago that he said that he was talking to god. And i just want to reiterate here, this is an incredit bring tragic event. One of the victims as young as three months of age. An Infant Shot in the arms of their mother. What is going on here, jim . Well, obviously this man was suffering from some tremendous mental distress. I mean, he is claiming god is speaking directly to him, he is going up to strangers telling them that their daughters will commit suicide when people dont even have daughters. What the sheriff has reported, they have no known connection with the family that has been mass kurd. One mom with the infant in her arms and they are shot. And a long shootout with the sheriff deputies. I know the territory well and they did a great job trying to stop this guy. But when they got him outside and he ran back In The House, he wasnt armed. So they couldnt shoot him. And he ran back In The House and thehes if massacred inside. And now is he in jail, but little consolation to the family. He was very erratic, he was saying weird things, god is talking to him, you know, he will do all these things. And of course he armored up, he had a lot of ammo, obviously some weapons. And just awful, awful tragedy in poll Polk County. But he is now in custody. Anything else that could have been done . And i ask this because a deputy was first dispatched to the neighborhood around 7 30 pop Saturday Evening after a woman got a suspicious Phone Call from a man who said that god told him to speak to one of her daughters. So at 7 30 before the shooting that happened in the middle of the night, there was a deputy dispatched. Is there Anything Else that could have been done to prevent this from happen something. Hard to say. It is a great question. Deputies went there at 7 30 to the home, they interviewed the occupants and they searched and stayed in the area for 22 minutes looking to see if there was someone around there who was reported. They didnt find anyone, no report of violence. So, you know, they didnt leave the area totally. It was poll. Jules polonetsky being County Dep. Jules polonetsky being County Dep Polk County deputies who responded to the scene. So they never really left their patrol beat. And you know, you get a lot of weird calls when you are a uniformed officer, there is a lot of calls like this that happen, it is not an unusual call at all. And Deputies Cant Park themselves in front of the house forever, they are not security. They never left the neighborhood. And, you know, they confronted this guy, they were in a shootout with the guy. And just a tragic thing. Maybe the sure arrive will find things when they look back where he could have been stopped even days earlier if he was that erratic. And this is not the first type of story that weve referred to, and im referring to an Iraq War Veteran suffering from ptsd. So does it beg to have the conversation about those who come back from war . I think that we can always do better for our veterans, but it shouldnt stigmatize them. Because anybody who has been in conflict and heard the Gunfire And Subject to their colleagues being killed can suffer from those times. And it doesnt make you a violent person. So maybe a small percentage of veterans engage in this, but very small like the general population. But i agree with, you lets give the Veterans Everything that we can, lets help them every way that we can. And war does make you suffer years later. And this contributed to this tragedy, many well find out some more. But just horrific case. And certainly doesnt predispose them to violence, but do they have access to the proper people. And that is the point. Thank you, jim. And now as millions wait for theexpiration of rams, millions set to see their weekly income plummet. And congress did not extend this time around. And heidi, good to see you this afternoon. All of this as the Biden Administration is reeling from disappointing August Jobs report. How much will severing these jobless benefits of millions of americans impact next months figures . Reporter honest answer . Nobody knows. You heard the president this week try to reassure americans that the trajectory were on is on the up and up, that unemployment is going down, wages going up, but about 10 Million people are about to lose their Safety Net and this September 6 date was chosen before we knew that there was going to be a delta surge. And that is why were seeing a rift really open up, a split here in the White House. We saw for instance earlier today the Housing Secretary say that he believed that for some families, this really is a recipe for a melee of misery as he put it. And lets talk about Booster Shots. Everybody is looking towards the September 20th deadline to get that Booster Shot if and when they qualify. It seems like Chief Of Staff Ron Klain and dr. Anthony fauci saying that moderna may actually miss the Emergency Authorization September 20th deadline. What does it mine for those who got the Moderna Shot . Reporter we know this came after regulators warned the White House thursday that they may not have the data to support that third Booster Shot particularly in the case of moderna. And also even in the case of pfizer with the exception of individuals who are immunocompromised, those who qualify at this point. We did talk or cnn talked earlier today with Chief Of Staff Ron Klain and he stressed that this decision now really is firmly in the court of the fda and cdc. Those are decisions made by the fda and cdc. As i said before, what we have done is purchase the boosters so question are ready so we dont see this Horrible Spectacle We Saw in december where vaccines were approved but you couldnt get them, you didnt know where to get them, we didnt have the supply. Reporter so to be clear, dr. Fauci stressed this morning that we are going to at least see partial implementation by September 20th and eventually full implementation of this plan. Got it. Heidi, good to see you. Thank you. Representative Adam Kinzinger became the second republican on the January 6 committee to criticize Kevin Mccarthy saying that he is threatening Telecom Companies. It is really bad politics. And this is following of Course Liz Cheneys Statement Reminding Mccarthy that his statements have changed since January 6. Want to go to Ali Vitali on the hill. Anybody else, Anybody Else speaking up, any republican voices speaking up here besides though two . Reporter not yet, but that is not surprising, right . Those are the two republicans that are on this January 6 commission. They are the republicans who from the moment January 6 happened through the impeachment hearings, and then of course after who have continued to be outspoken about what happened on that day as well as former President Trumps role in it. So not surprising that were here right now. These are pretty familiar Fault Lines where Kinzinger And Cheney are trying to police their party a little bit and talk about the ways that republicans are now trying to say that those 35 Telecom And Tech companies, if they comply with the Commissions Request for documents and preservation of data, that they will should house republicans take the house again if 2022 pun in Addition Addition punish those companies for cooperating. Weve said that we want the records preserved. There are a number of people and i wont go into the details of who is on it. But well see what is in the american peoples interests. So to turn around and make ominous talk to these Telecom Companies that, you know, when we take over, it will be different or well have payback, that is not frankly the republican party i remember and the republican party that i ever joined. Reporter thing is, you hear a lot from kinzinger about the current state of the republican party. It is a different party in the aftermath of the Donald Trump presidency, certainly trump left his finger prints all over it. And he remains the most powerful person in the party. Although he is not the explicit target of this commission, he is linked with all of the work and all of the Fact Finding that they are doing. And so as you move forward, it is not surprising that well continue to see these very familiar Fault Lines of most Rank And File republicans either overtly pushing back against this commissions work or just not saying anything about it whereas Kinzinger And Cheney have been the very small minority to say that they back up the commissions work, they are working on it and that they think it should go forward. And well talk about the politics in the next hour as well. Ali vitali, great to see you. So one week after Hurricane Ida slamming into louisiana. Another system is churning in the Gulf Of Mexico right now. And Louisiana Governor John Bel edwards telling residents whether it turns in to a hurricane or not, heavy rains could drench the region. And Josh Letterman is in la el paso, seems s in la el paso, seem La Place. They cant get a break there. So talk to us about two simultaneous events. The clean upefforts and any view of preparations and possibility of this thing becoming a hurricane . Reporter yeah, talk about a perfect storm. You have this new tropical Disturbance Brewing in the Gulf Of Mexico, youve got still all this damage from ida, an Oil Spill now reported off the coast. It is raining today, so anyone who didnt get a tarp over their damaged roof is now getting more water coming in. And add on top of that you still have this going on, you have workers all across the city trying to put up Power Lines that are down. More than half A Million people still without power in louisiana even as about a third of New Orleans residents have gotten their power back. So those are the lucky ones. But in the meantime, it is hot. It is 105 Degree Heat Index today. A lot of these folks have been out of power now for a week, no ac, maybe they had preparations, they had supplies for three, four days, but as the days tick on, they are getting more and more desperate. Im doing what im supposed to do. Ive talked to the insurance company, ive filed fema and done everything im supposed do and were just waiting now. Im hopeful and im not going to say it is not going to happen, but it is wait and see. Reporter so you were hearing there from a resident that we spoke to earlier, janice holmes, her house is 34 years badly damaged, but she is one of the lucky ones because she had a crew of volunteers from out of state who came, we watched as they were pull being out clothes from her house, Moldy Couch trying to get rid of the mold before that sets in even worse. There are so many more here in La Place and else where who are still waiting for that kind of help. On top of that, another one could be heading towards them. Just unbelievable. Josh letterman, thanks so much. Still ahead, struggling renters are facing eviction because of the supreme Courts Decision to block the Eviction Moratorium. But a new report that the more tore yum was not protecting a lot of people anyways as landlords worked the loopholes to kick people out or bullied them. And next up, running low on pediatric icu beds, Hundreds Of Thousands of cases being reported in kids. And so dr. Blackstock will join me to talk about her own experience and what it says about the stakes involved in reaching capacity. We Welcome Change . We can make Emergency Medicine possible at 40,000 feet. The Delta Variant as opposed to the Alpha Variant is much, much more transmissible. Many more people including children are getting infected. You will get more children infected and in fact when they get infected just on a pure basis of the relative number of people that will actually get into the hospital, you will wind up seeing more children in the hospital. Terrifying. So the united states has a startling new number of Covid Cases right now. Nbc news confirming 40 Million americans have now contracted coronavirus. This is even more startling, the number of kids getting it and getting sick enough to be hospitalized. In texas for instance more than 282 kids are hospitalized with covid. Physicians blaming the governors Ban On Mask Mandates for the surgeons. And it is not just texas. The number of cases skyrocketed from julys 38,000 to 204,000 by The End of august from july to all, that much of an increase. And it is taxing icus. And dr. Blackstock has an oped in the Washington Post about the anguish caused for children and their families when the icu becomes, quote, at capacity. She joins me now to share her own personal experience as well. Dr. Blackstock, thank you for joining us. Before we delve into your personal experience with the picu, first Talk To Me about what it means when a Picu Or Nicu is at capacity. Thank you so much for having me. Thereare expressions that we hear, at capacity, and what it means is that the icu which has a finite amount of resources, they are overworking, they are working overload, they dont have enough resources or personnel to adequately and Competently Care for their patients. They are not able to deliver the standard of care because there are not enough of them or there are not enough resources. And what we have known from prior studies is that when icus or hospitals are at capacity, that actually correlates with worse outcomes and increased mortality rate. So let me read from the Washington Post oped who involves your experience with your Little One who is now safe and sound. So i want to put that out there. So you write, once he was in the picu, a mask was placed over his tiny face that forced oxygen into his nose and mouth, and his Vital Signs were continuously monitored. He stayed in the picu for five days and four nights, i slept in a chair next to his oversized bed every night you went on. We had waited only several hours in the e. R. For the bed. At the time the wait felt like forever. I cannot imagine the fear that parents of critically ill children are experiencing in overwhelmed hospitals across the country. So this idea that the most vulnerable person in your life is now having to wait for lifesaving measures because the hospital is overwhelmed, the picu is overwhelmed, it is as sounding knowing yourself the emotions that you went there. My kid was in the nicu as well after he was born was he have underweight and it was exkraush excruciating. He would be okay, but just watching him. And as dr. Fauci said, the Delta Variant is so transmissible, that we are seeing more children becoming infected and because they are not yet eligible for vaccine, even though covid causes less severe disease in children, because their shear numbers are increasing in terms of infections, were seeing more of them becoming hospitalized and in intensive care units. And that coincides with the return of rsv which is the virus that my child had. It had been depressed last year because kids had been at home wearing mask, but this summer it has increased significantly. So you say we need policies that Support Nonpharmaceutical Interventions to decrease transmission. What does that mean . Absolutely. I think that the administration has done a strong job in terms of the vaccine rollout. But we cannot use a vaccine only strategy at this point and that is what is being put forth. We know that masks are very effective in break convenienting the spread of coronavirus so we need federal, state and local mask mandates. We need vaccine mandates as well. And by businesses and employers. You with focusing more on schools, Rapid Testing is also neglected. There should be free and Rapid Testing so that kids can be tested before they leave the house. We really have to use the multilayered strategy because there are holes in those swiss cheese slices. On zoo all the strategies together make it effective. And you bring up the rapid Testing Thing and in the uk for instance, kids going to school, they have Rapid Testing done multiple times a week at home before they head out the door. Why cant that happen here . It seems so simple. It can happen and the way that the government invested in vaccine development, they can also invest in Rapid Testing. You know, just depends on the priority. And right now we need our federal government to prioritize Rapid Testing that will save many lives. Hardest part of that would be me sticking that thing up my kids nose. They would not enjoy it believe me. They scream. Mine too. It is what it is, get over it. Dr. Blackstock, thank you so much for joining us. Coming up we need to believe the scientists that the earth is warming. Climate change is here. And what is at stake is the preservation of the globe. The pressure mounting on congress to pass infrastructure and climate Change Legislation to prevent future devastation. But is it too late already. N. But is it too late already this may look like a regular Movie Night. But if youre a kid with diabetes, its more. Its the simple act of enjoying time with friends, knowing you understand your glucose levels. Tech every customer has their own safelite story. This couple was on a camping trip. Singers safelite repair, safelite replace. Welcome back. President biden is expected to visit both New York and New Jersey on tuesday to survey the damage brought on by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Cleanup efforts are continuing in the area after the storm battered the northeast with catastrophic flooding and winds earlier this week. I had a chance to see the destruction up close and n. Manville, New Jersey one of the cities the president will be visiting. And this man is a renter of this home and is distraught having lost all his belongings. So he didnt necessarily want to talk to us but he is allowing us to look inside his home. Mine, it is completely destroyed here. The water is still waist level. Yesterday a lot of the places that i had been seeing the water was beginning to recede. Here were still seeing a significant amount of water. At 3 00 a. M. They finally made their way out and the water was up to his neck. He had to carry his head on his head to walk across the street all the way across the street to swing around here to show where that is, chuck, that white fence. He had to get all the way over there to seek safety and the water continued to go up to Head Level for me. So really the question for these folks, as the governor saying is this a long game, this will be a continued conversation as weve been having, for this family, it is where do i go. Where do i live. So in New York times piece, it actually covers both those things that i just brought up, highlighting the new Climate Reality that america is not ready for. And joining me now is one of the authors of that piece. Thankyou so much for joining us. So many good parts that i want to highlight for folks to understand the obstacles that we have ahead. Let me read one part of it. The country faces two separate but enter laced problems according to climate and Restill Resilience experts. First governments have not spent enough time and money to brace for climate shocks that have long been predicted, but a second more sobering lesson, there are limits to how much the country and the world can adapt. And if nations dont do more to cut Greenhouse Gas Yeef missions emissions, they may soon run up to outer edges of resilience. We have found a direct scientific correlation between Greenhouse Gas emissions and climate Change And Rain and the excessive amount of rain that were seeing across the world. What needs to happen to change things, what does the Government Need to do, is what is being proposed for instance in the Reconciliation Infrastructure Package enough . Well, i think it is a Nuance Question in the sense that everybody says one thing which is it is not either or, it is both. So when we talk about do we need to, you know, focus on cutting Carbon Emissions, stopping global warming or at least slowing it down, or do we need to harden up and fix our infrastructure so that we have, you know, less damage and less death from the impacts that are already happening. Is it enough . I mean, there is already a huge battle going on over this trillion Dollar Bill about whether Climate Change whether reducing Carbon Emissions should even be part of it. So of course it wont be enough if it is not in there. Even if it is in there, it will only be the beginning. But the message is whatever you start, whatever you do, you know, there is always something that can be done. So really like what needs to happen is for all levels of government and for people too push their governments to address both of these problems. Impacts which fall disproportionately on more immigrant neighborhoods because of where they are historically situated and over the years less attention that they have gotten from regulators from Infrastructure Maintenance and the like. Two more things i want to get in here while i have you and i want to read a part of your piece that talks about that. The pattern of damage reflects the relationship between climate exposure and racial inequality. Because of historic inequalities, they are more prone to flooding, receive less main maintenance. And you talk in your piece about some of the folks that tied here died here in queens in Basement Apartments that arent supposed to be apartments, illegal housing for these individuals. Because that is august that they can probably afford. Right. Nobody wants to live in a basement that has no safe way of exiting it in an emergency. However, because of the Housing Crisis in New York city, a lot of people do there is something like 100,000 people who live in such apartments. And if you look at this searing piece from woodside, the problem is larger thank you heard because there is plenty of blocks where nobody died but a lot of people lost everything. And they are finding out that insurance doesnt cover it and even when officials are fanning out to neighborhoods, there are some blocks where nobody has come yet. So, right, i think that this is showing something that climate activists and some politicians and environmental justice groups have been trying to say for a long time but hard to picture it until you see a clear example like this. Housing is an environmental issue. So is transportation. So are parks and green space because that slows down movement of Storm Water as it goes through as it finds its way through gravity to where it ends up. All these things are interconnected, we have delayed maintenance on all of them and it might sound like Bread And Butter you know, picture now you know, picture now reminds me of storm drains. Just simple maintenance in the northeast are often very old, not built for todays climate and need to be overhauled and better maintained. So all these things that might not sound like climate issues really are and i think that that is now becoming much more clear to a lot of people. So it can be an opportunity. And it is affecting a lot of people. Amber, a great piece. I put it on my twitter if folks want to read it. And you should read it. Thank you. Thank you for taking the time today. Up next, new research showing the federal Evictions Moratorium might not have worked as plans. Landlords still found ways to evict tenants and now things will probably get worse. And next hour, the controversial candidate who could become the next governor of california unless democrats act. Larry elder and his troubling history, well be right back. Hik we did it again. With the coronavirus still raging homeowners are more vulnerable than affair. The Supreme Court blocked the Biden Administrations Eviction Moratorium which provided protection to renters during the pandemic. While the moratorium did save many families from eviction new research from the University Of Washington shows that landlords found ways around the protections potentially at an even hire rate than before the pandemic. Including to fix a leaking roof. One of the authors of the study is joining me now. Some of these things are stunning. It seemed more like bullying than Anything Else. You get these people to try to leave their homes. Talk to me about some of the an anecdotal stories that you heard that landlords used to get them out. Thanks. Yes, we heard a lot of fear from the tenants. And just to being about a up, nearly 40 of the respondents believe that it was what some what likely or very likely that they would be forced to leave their housing in the next two months. This is with the moratorium in place. They knew that the landlords had tools to force them to leave. We heard things like changing the locks on homes, forcing people to not have access to their homes or their belongs. We also heard about ignoring needed repairs and sometimes doing unnecessary repairs. So entering the apartment too often or without notice, sometimes cutting off access to water or the internet and obviously the internet is the Life Line during stayathome orders. And just threatening people that they needed to leave. Your home really is your Life Line especially during stayathome orders and exposed you to the virus more so. You talked about an elderly couple that had to find new housing, being the most vulnerable to covid19 at the time. You offer some solutions in this spees. What are they . Well, we believe that ongoing tenant protections are important. No onens that the Eviction Moratorium can last forever and yet we have other tools that should help households coming out of the pandemic. Things like strong tenant rights overall, also we know that lot of Rental Assistance has been authorized and yet just a fraction has been distributed. So speeding up that into the hands of landlords who need it will make a big difference. Also things like in Washington State we have a new right to counsel law which allows legal assistance for tenants needing legal representation during evictions. So things like this can make a big difference to help keep tenants housed. Professor, we appreciate you joining us. Thank you. All right. A huge unset, everybody, at the u. S. Open. It is something we probably should have seen coming, a heated nationwide battle between parents and educators over covid precautions in the classroom. But the subject of mask wearing has become so polarizing that some parents are becoming violence towards the very people that they entrust their kids with. And now just a few weeks into the School Year formerly sleepy board meetings are now battlegrounds. None of the kids wear them correctly. They touch their masks, they eat their masks. Im not here to threaten anybody. Joining me now is post of the daily beast. Thanks for joining us. I appreciate it. That video was pretty troubling to listen to, asking a child to wear a mask child abuse. My children wore a mask this morning to walk into a coffee shop. I dont think that im a child abuser. That being said, Talk To Me about why people like this, maga supporters, folks against children wearing masks to this extreme extent are now infiltrating these Board Of Ed meetings. It actually goes even deeper and to a more wild extent than what we saw in the clips that you played. A lot of people are making their voices heard even if what they are doing is flinging wild claims that are not based in any degree of fact including the Sex Trafficking nonsense. But they are doing it in at least a shall we say peaceful sort of way. There is a lot of that, but coupled with that, there are a lot of people who are going around making speeches to the extent of saying that these School Board members need to be targeted, they are people that if we cant get them to do what we want, we might have to force them out via a could you owing coup. And there are a good amount of activists playing School Board members upyou owing coup. And there are a good amount of activists playing School Board members up as if they are something akin to a nazi cult for trying to smear them as things that seem as benign as masks or vaccine mandates or if man not mandates guidances. So this is yet another instance of a lot of these local activists and sometimes militias turning what should be a noncontroversial Public Safety and public Health Issue during a pandemic into something that is a Life Or Death moral struggle. And this is not limited to the fringes anymore. You said some is peaceful, also some violent. We reported yesterday on someone that attacked a School Principal because of mask wearing. I was texted by a Friend And Facebook messages that got up in a Librarian Face because they asked the child to put a mask on. Some of it is actually turning violent and against the very people that they task with taking care of their children from 8 00 to 3 00 every single day. Is there any success in stopping it or are these people actually making headway . Well, in terms of some of these people wanting to run for School Board positions or if not trying to run just trying to make a lot of noise and make these peoples lives more miserable who sit on these School Boards, for the time being at least, the partisan and grass Roots Energy seems to be at the back of the people who are antimask and antivaccine. There arent nearly as many people covering thisrous cuss on Rick Cuss on the other side. And i dont see it breaking any right now, but these people will continue to gain more and more steam at least as long as they have major figures in the republican party and in conservative media and influential right wing media having their backs on this. And for the time being, these are the kind of people who are being held up as Folk Heros as major players in the Conservative Movement. That is why these things are continuing in many places. There is a rally also happening on september 18th, i know you talked about it in your podcast, organized by a former Trump Campaign Operative in honor of the insurrectionists. How big is this likely to somebody. It is unclear how big this one would be. We were speaking to him after we confronted him with our reporting that bunch of players in the Conservative Movement including people very close to former President Trump say they havent been invited or have no idea what were talking about when asked about the rally. And he kind of reacted with a bit of a shrug. It is unclear how big of a deal this will be with this by at the helm. But having said that, this nearly one of many Data Points of mainstream conservative figures including but certainly not limited to the leader of the republican party, former President Trump, trying to transform the image of these rioters into political martyrs as opposed to Violence Criminals or rioters. And again a major theme of our podcast is that these things are no longer limited to the political fringe. They are penetrating the mainstream. Thank you as always. Make sure that you tune into his podcast, new episodes every wednesday. Ahead, Wendy Davis will join me to talk about the fight against the restrictions on abortion. Plus a look at the republican who that could take over as Californias Governor if the recall of Gavin Newsom is successful. Ul ever notice how stiff clothes can feel rough on your skin .
