Now, this issue is somewhat controversial, somewhat emotional, and companies seem a little more hesitant to talk about this than, say, black lives matter even, or voting rights. But we have heard some companies speak out, yelp, for instance, match and bumble, those dating companies. Both texasbased and women led. They have spoken out against this. Uber and lyft, those ride sharing apps, american airlines, silicon laboratories, were hearing a lot from celebrities as far as social sway. Pink, reese witherspoon, Cindy Lopper even. Hollywood isnt going to have the same impact in georgia when Disney And Netflix threatened to pull out. The Tv Industry puts millions of dollars in that economy. Not so in texas. Companies we havent heard from, biggest employers, at t, oracle, dell has a big presence here. Those companies were quick to talk about, you know, voting rights. So theyre not as quick on this one. Those companies also celebrate international womens day. So its interesting that theyre a little hesitant to talk about womens reproductive health. Kendis, lindsey . You mentioned the film industry. Have we heard from many actors in hollywood saying they refuse to work in texas because of this . Reporter well, i dont know about the work necessarily. Theres definitely been talk about discussed about disdain with this. And i think that that could translate to contracts, right. We heard from reese witherspoon, keri washington, amy schumer, lizzo. We saw this with the bathroom bill. A lot of musicians skipped North Carolina for their tours. Things like that could start to happen as were scheduling. This social issue could come into play with issues and scheduling. Liz mclaughlin, thank you so much. I was speaking with morgan fair child from Falcon Crest just yesterday. Shes from dallas. Shes saying shes terribly upset about all of this. Shes been doing pro Choice Work since the 80s. Cant believe it has come down to this. Our thanks to liz mclaughlin. A lot of people upset about all of this, but the battle does continue for many people. This isnt the first time texas made bills on abortion bans that made headlines. They plan to introduce 20 weeks and other restrictions. In doing so, she became a nationally known voice for supporters of abortion rights. Former Texas State Senator and founder of the organization, deeds not words, wendy davis, is joining us live right now. Right now, were watching american businesses closely to see if theyll respond. Do you think that theyll they will . And would it impact any of this at this point . I certainly hope that they will. And i think women across the state and honestly across the country are going to do their darnedest to make sure companies will respond. Think about it this way. In many companies, women are more than 50 of their Work Force and their consumers. And if they expect that they can appease us by saying that they support things like womens international day or other programs they purport to support the Depth And Breadth of womens equality, they cant get away with saying that if they arent at the same time supporting our ability to have autonomy over our own bodies. And thats not just important in terms of putting your money where your mouth is and supporting womens absolute right to have an equal place in this economy and society. But it also, of course, is incredibly important for them and their Work Force for women to be able to have the kind of reproductive control that allows them to choose when and whether they will have a family and allows them the ability to choose when and whether and how they will pursue their careers. Some people are making the argument right now, since the Supreme Court has taken action, roe v. Wade doesnt really matter any more. The thinking is that more states will enact copycat laws. Weve already seen governors in florida, arkansas, South Dakota speak openly about it. Politico pointing out that many of the leaders of these states all have president ial ambitions. Do you see roe v. Wade as in jeopardy . It is in jeopardy. Donald trump made it clear he was only going to support people who would be willing to overturn roe v. Wade. I do want to make it clear to everyone that the u. S. Supreme court at this point has not said that this law is unconstitutional. Instead excuse me, constitutional. Instead, what theyve said is that theyre not going to take it up. And through this shadow docket ruling, the procedure of which, of course, is being called into question in congress right now, and the growing use of this shadow docket procedure, they ignored the opportunity to stop in its tracks a clearly, at this point, unconstitutional law. There is no question but this law does not comply with roe v. Wade because it stops women from exercising their legal right to abortion at a Sixweek Period of time. And roe, of course, allows that to viability. But this is going to be a tough court battle, even though the Court Hasnt yet weighed in, the Supreme Court hasnt yet weighed in on the constitutionality of the law here. Because by taking a Handsoff Approach to it, theyve allowed it to go into effect. That is why you see these other states and their copycat attempts. And you are absolutely right. The one thing these governors of these states have in common is they all have president ial ambitions. And its so unfortunate that women, our very lives, Human Beings who are in the wake of the outfall of this law, who right now are waking up terrified about what they are going to do because of an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. And what do you say to that woman . You know, right now what we say is we are trying to do things in two really important ways to help you. Number one, Abortion Funds in texas are doing wonderful work in making sure that women can leave texas to access the Abortion Care that they need. But that is never going to be the solution. And lets face it, in many ways its a privilege to be able to do that because there are women who cannot leave their families, who have other children that they have to care for, who have jobs that they cannot miss and who will lose their jobs if they do. The answer has to be providing constitutionally protected abortion in our state and in every state. And one of the things that we are doing right now at deeds not words, the nonprofit that i founded, weve created a legal Defense Fund. Were asking people to donate to deeds not words. Com, there is a button there specifically for this legal Defense Fund, and this fund will be used so that our Abortion Clinics can reopen without fear of the personal financial liability that our doctors and other Front Line Medical Care Workers will experience because of the way that this law was written, allowing the realization in essence, that the battle in essence is loss at least at this point. As the nation celebrates Labor Day weekend, many are not in a celebratory mood. Millions of americans will lose some Unemployment Benefits as it expires this weekend. Some are pressuring President Biden to take action without congress to extend these programs, despite the president saying the economy is strong enough to end the unemployment checks. Joining us right now with the latest Nbc News white House Reporter lauren egan. Lauren, good morning. Reporter good morning. Three big things are going to happen on monday. First, gig workers, contractors, selfemployed people, people who normally would not qualify for unemployment but were added on during the pandemic, they are going to be kicked off the Unemployment Insurance. Second, anyone who has been unemployed for six months is also going to be kicked off of this. And then third, that 300 federal supplement that was added on top of State Unemployment benefits is also going to expire. About 26 states have already ended about one of these programs already in hopes that more people would be going back to work. Data shows that that was not the case. The president has said that september was always going to be an appropriate time for these benefits to end. He meant for the Unemployment Insurance to be a bridge to get people to the other side of the pandemic but, of course, the reality is we are still very much in a pandemic. The president acknowledged as much on friday in a speech about the August Jobs reports. Listen to what he had to say. Theres no question the Delta Variant is why Todays Job Report isnt stronger. I know people were looking and i was hoping for a higher number. Even some of the benefits that were provided are set to expire next week. States have the option to extend those benefits. Reporter the president saying there that states can use some of the money from the american Rescue Plan to set up their own enhanced unemployment programs. But so far we have not seen any state come out and say that they plan to do that. The president is in a bit of a bind here. He wants to project some sense of economic normalcy. He wants people to get back to work. But at the same time, he does not want to leave behind vulnerable people, perhaps people that cannot find a job in their specific industry, people who still have some health concerns, Cant Find Child care. He does not want to leave those people behind. But lindsey, kendis, those two are competing against each other. Lauren egan, thank you so much for that reporting. Leaders of the January 6 Select committee are slamming mccarthys claim the d. O. J. Politico reports that his name is among the list of people whose records are being eyed by the committee. This January 6 commission has been busy over the course of the last few weeks weve seen them start to ask for a ton of records from seven federal agencies as well as the national archives. Those were meant to target a lot of members in the Trump Administration and the larger Donald Trump orbit. But then we also saw this week the request of 35 Telecom And Tech companies asking for records requests including those of some republican lawmakers who are allies of the former president. Youre right, House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy has pushed back on that as well as republican lawmakers who are on that list. He said should republicans take the majority of the house in 2022, Tech Companies who comply with this investigation will be punished. At the same time, while mccarthy has said these kinds of requests are illegal, Telecom And Tech companies have given these records to Investigation Committees before. Mccarthy is not citing a law that says that kind of participation with this committee is illegal. Nevertheless, weve seen him out there as republicans have been, trying to muddy the waters around what this committee is doing. On the Flip Side of it, democrats have said that this is not a partisan exercise. They point to the fact that there are republicans who are not just on this committee, but congresswoman Liz Cheney is elevated to one of the top spots on it, making it truly bipartisan from the top down. Nevertheless, though, what weve seen from members of the Trump Orbit and his allies are that this investigation, in their words, is partisan. At the same time, though, while we see the January 6 committee here on The Hill trying to dig in and investigate the contours around what led to January 6th, we are also seeing the legal battles from the hundreds of insurrectionists going through the legal system right now making their way through the courts. One such case that i think is on a lot of Peoples Radar is for the socalled Qanon Shaman jacob angeli. He had his day in court. He pled guilty to one count, obstruction of an official proceeding. He spent 8 months in jail. It is likely when his sentencing comes in mid november, he could see up to 51 months in prison. This just part of the ongoing legal proceedings experts say could take years as rioters and insurrectionists have their day in court, kendis. It does get complicated and continues. What do you think of mccarthys seeming involvement in this probe . He threatened to strip committee members, threatened Tech Companies for phone records. Does this amount to obstruction . It does. It is obvious he and republicans that dont want to see the records of Phone Conversations with President Trump from member of congress are trying to hide something. He came out with President Trump when he called over the Justice Department and asked, i think mr. Rosenstein, to help him and to say that the election was crooked. And he said, dont worry about anything else. Just say that and my friends in congress will help me. Trump knew he had people in congress like some of the people, if not all of the people on that list the Telephone Records are being sought, who would help him by Mouthing On Social Media and anyplaces they could, the Big Lie. And they would spread the Big Lie to the extent they would attract the terrorists, militia, guerrillas that they did to washington on January 6. They are the new damage and new threat to the united states of america. And i am fearful and i do think that they will theyre up to no good. But i also think he was showing what some people think and there will be problems in the future. And We Saw the man come up from North Carolina threatening, saying he had a bomb, which he didnt. Congressman, before we let you go, wanted to talk about the federal Unemployment Benefits ending this weekend. 12 Million americans are going to lose some of their benefits tomorrow. What do you want to see either the White House do or is there Anything Congress can do . Well, i think congress can act. Unemployment benefits have passed through legislation and i think it takes congress to do extra benefits. There are a lot of people still suffering economically from this pandemic, from the repercussions of closed schools and jobs that have left the office and put some people out of work. We have to draw a Fine Line and fine tune it. I think there was some corruption in past government programs, a lot with p. P. P. , different Programs P. P. A. , but more with different benefits were given out and i think we have to be careful, but i do think we have to steer additional Unemployment Benefits to people who were out of work and it can be shown they have tried to get work and cannot get work because there are people in that position and they need to be part of the safety net. I want you to kind of explain what democracy looks like in california. It sounds so complicated to me, as well as to others. Newsome needs to get 50 , right . But other candidates need to just win a plurality, so you could have like the guy who brought out a Kodak Bear on the campaign trail, or Caitlyn Jenner who could get 12 and they could become the next governor of california . Reporter yes, thats the way the California Constitution is set up. We have a Recall System that statewide officers can be recalled. If you qualify a measure for the ballot, 12. 5 of the folks who voted in the last race, so in this case in the governors race, then the sitting officer, in this case governor newsome, has to get over 50 to stay in office, and the second question which in the California Recall Case has 46 candidates on the ballot, those candidates only have to defeat each other. And so you definitely could see a candidate, if the recall is successful, winning office with, say, a quarter of the electorate. Its very different than a regular gubernatorial election. Thats a fascinating system. Newsome is not on that second ballot. The threshold he needs to cross is that first one, that 50 . Thats right. Newsome cannot appear on the second ballot and you cannot write him in as a candidate. And so i was with Newsomes Campaign Yesterday where Senator Elizabeth Warren was getting the crowd riled up, chanting, no on the recall. And the Newsome Campaign really hitting home. They want democrats to skip the second question. They simply want to defeat the first question and keep their governor in office. What a fascinating system it is. The latest polling you have newsome who is above, well above 50 in many of the recent polls, but you never know what happens on voting day. Does the vicepresident have sway in california still . Reporter well, in the Bay Area especially, where voters are very active, the Bay Area has always been obviously a strong hold for newsome. He was the mayor of San Francisco and you see Kamala Harris Coming Up through that Bay Area system. Shes certainly going to excite a lot of people. The Newsome Campaign is being really savvy about who they are choosing to be in different parts of the state. Liz warren had a strong showing in l. A. County and thats why she appeared in Los Angeles yesterday. You see Amy Klobuchar appearing for newsome in Orange County today. Some see Orange County increasingly turning purple and that area being somewhere where klobuchar seen as more of a moderate would hit home to some voters. The Harris Campaign or the vicepresident s office had to cancel a trip to the Bay Area after the Airport Attack In Kabul by isisk, and so this is the second round of seeing the vicepresident planning a trip to come out and support her former colleague gavin newsom, and the Newsome Campaign is certainly looking for all the help they can get to get the word out to vote. Perhaps all those highprofile names indicative of how worried some california democrats are about all of this. Talk about Larry Elder really quickly, because apparently hes already plotting on Senator Dianne Feinstein, saying he would replace her with a republican. Hes sounding pretty confident. You have a situation now where people are starting to return to their homes in New Orleans with the citys Maren Couraging those who can do so safely to come back. While others are still trying to get out, especially amid the new tropical depression that could be forming in the gulf of mexico, potentially hitting the state as early as next week according to the national hurricane center. So now you have the city of New Orleans offering free transportation to people to leave New Orleans to go to shelters outside of the city as the largest utility says its possible they may not have power back up for everyone until September 29th or possibly even longer. We got an Update Yesterday from the new Orleans Homeland Security director about the progress theyre making in getting power up and running. Heres what he had to say. Power is back, again, about a third of the city at this point, which is pretty incredible after the amount of damage that the system received. I mean, i think were very careful about saying, come back if you have somewhere to go, if you have support, and if you can manage it. But at the same time, realizing we do have a population that this has been a long haul. We want to give everybody an option that needs an option. Reporter one of the challenges in bringing people back to New Orleans, i can tell you just from driving around the last few days, kendis, the Street Lights are still out. So even though the streets are clear, theres not debris in the way, you have a situation where people, if they forget that theyve got to stop at every single light to make sure theres not cars coming in the other direction, you could have a dangerous situation. That could get worse once you start bringing people back to the city and have even more people back on the roads. There was Willard Scott with Tom Snider and i was like, wow. It was literally like a bolt from the blue. Thats who i want to be. When i was in washington we did the 10 00 news and i could watch willard at 5 00 and 6 00 and id go out to dinner and then do my show and watch him. A Master Class watching how you should be on tv. I think what makes him so inspiring is that he gives of himself. You know, a lot of people in this Business Whens the theres a young person Coming Up they seem them as competition and he was not that way. It is bring your daughter to work today. For an impressionable 22yearold to have probably the most famous weatherman in the country take an interest in me and my career was really mind boggling. When i first heard that al chose me as an inspiration i thought he was nuts. Everybody love. I was very surprised, very honored. Willard scott we had a relationship that was made in heaven. Absolutely. The first time we spoke or met. Best Advice Anybody had given me was the two things he gave me. Never give up your day job. Dont give up the weather. Everybody loves the Weather Person because they like somebody to beat up on you. They cant take that away from you. That means from this time forward, time for Willard Scott. Ill be seeing you. His philosophy is you just keep moving. Its been a good life, its been a great life. We get to go to places and meet people that a lot of folks only dream of. I did feel like we were kindred spirits. There was some connection there. I can honestly say i wouldnt be here doing the Today Show if it wasnt for willard. All this time, do you have any regrets, willard . No, i really dont.
