We begin with week of uncertainty for 12 Million americans, who are set to lose at least some other federal Unemployment Benefits this Labor Day weekend. Some lawmakers And reportedly, some even in President Bidens own staff are pushing him to take unilateral action, without congress, to extend the benefits as the pAndemic rages on. The president says the economy is going to have Extra Covid era systems. Our correspondent Lauren Egan is joining us right now. Lauren, the latest Job Numbers were simply not good. Millions are losing benefits in the next few days, what is the President Planning to do . Yes, good morning, guys. Millions of people, as you mentioned, will lose those Unemployment Benefits this week. And this comes as the delta cases are surging, And Job Hiring is slowing. The president has now said for weeks, that september was an appropriate time for this benefit to expire. He has maintained it was only supposed to be a temporary lifeline to people to get them through the other side of the pAndemic. But of course, we are still very much in this pAndemic. The president acknowledged as much on friday, in that Jobs Report the speech as you mentioned, only about 230,000 jobs were added last month, compare thAt To the month before, where we saw 1 Million jobs added. Listen to what he had to say about it. There is no question the Delta Variant is why Todays Job is not stronger. I know people were looking at iowa, hoping for a higher number. Even some of the benefits provided were set to expire next week. States have the option to extend those benefits. The president saying over their states can use some of that american rescue plan money, remember, that big Covid Package that was passed earlier this year . They can take some of thAt To start their own expAnded unemployment programs. But guys, so far we have not seen any state come out And say they plan to do that. The president is in a bit of a bind over here. He wants to project a sense of normalcy, encourage people to get back out there And return to some economic regularity. At the same time, he does not want to leave behind some vulnerable people, perhaps, people who are not ready to go back to work yet for health reasons, cannot find childcare. Maybe they simply cant find a job in their industry. But lindsey And kendis, those two interests appear to be competing right now. Our next guest will dive into that myth thAt There are tons of jobs out there, And people just dont want to work. Lauren egan, thank you so much. Lets bring in that guest right now, New York Times economic writer ben cattleman, who has written about the Unemployment Benefits extensively for the New York Times. Ben, thank you for being here. Director with the national Employment Law Project called this the biggest Benefits Cliff in american history. What could be the fallout from these benefits ending . I think that if you think over the course of this pAndemic, where you have seen several of these cliffs overtime, like we saw last summer, for the 600 Dollar benefits have been in place And got Cut Off. We saw that period over the winter when benefits were briefly lapsed. In each of those cases, we were able to be stored the benefits relatively quickly. Now, we are talking about seven And a half million people losing all of their benefits. And this starts this coming week. We are talking about several million more losing the 300 Dollar Ad on. And, as we were hearing, this is coming at a moment when the economy does seem to have significantly slowed down, when the pAndemic is very much rising again, And not behind us. It is a very different picture from what was anticipated when that deadline was set last spring. While, President Biden says the economy is strong enough to end these unemployment checks, we just talked about this August Job numbers released friday, they showed a big slowdown in hiring. What i found so interesting about your article, he really dispel the myth that Everybody Collecting Benefits can work but does not want to. You talk to people who literally were taking low paying jobs, switching careers, even selling plasma to make ends meet. What is the impact over here . The real world impact thAt These benefits will have, And the lack of them in a climate like this . Yes. I think there is this idea, because there are jobs out there, And there are jobs out there, that everybody can just overnight, go back to work. There are a lot of reasons why this is not the case. The pAndemic itself, is an obvious reason, there are a lot of people who still face significant health concerns. I spoke to a woman in pennsylvania, her son is immunocompromised, too young to be vaccinated. He cannot go Back To School in person. That rules out a lot of jobs for her. I talked to people who are looking, very actively for jobs but are not able to find them in their industry. In some cases, they are considered to qualified for some, overqualified for some, And not qualified enough for others. Childcare, we see, continuing to be disrupting sometimes. Im speaking to this morning from southern indiana, where i am visiting some family. The schools over here started in the beginning of august, And in this school district, shut down two weeks in, to go remote because of a surge of cases. So again, if you have kids at home, you might not be able to work right now. So it is not as simple as saying that everybody can just go back to work overnight. Yes, back in this merrygoround. We know, a lot of states And those federal benefits a while ago, And replace them with some incentives for those who do find jobs. Does your reporting show any benefit to those incentives . Are they working . You know, we have seen about half of the states which have Cut Off these benefits, or at least some of them early on. We have not seen a surge in return to work in those states, pushing people to go back. As you have said, we have seen a few states that have tried the return to work bonuses. Frankly, we have not seen much evidence so far thAt They are having a big effect. I think it is too early to really know. There are some creative ideas out there, about different ways you could try to change the Unemployment System in order to change some of the incentives. But the reality is, if there are enough jobs, or if people have significant barriers to employment, the issue might not be thAt They do not want to go back to work, the issue might be they cant. So those bonuses will not have the desired effect in those industries. Ben, give me the context on all of this, we enter Labor Day tomorrow. Compare this Labor Day compared to say, last Labor Day, which was At The height of the pAndemic. Where is this economic market right now, And the Labor Market . Yes. Look, i think it is helpful for a moment to think back to last spring, And where we sort of hoped we would be in september. I think there is an idea that after Labor Day, will be a return to normalcy for the economy, with you going back to Inperson Work in offices, that you would see schools And Daycare Kind of fully return to normal. And that people would really get back to work in something that looked, maybe a little bit more like that. Now, we are not in that case. The Jobs Report that came out on friday showed a very sharp slowdown in hiring, clearly tied to the Delta Variant. The work we have been hearing out of the biden White House for a while has been, the Delta Variant had not really been hurting the economy at. Clearly, no longer the case. We saw financial slowdowns, hospitality, And jobs were added in august. No reason to think that we continue into september. All right, then casselman from the New York Times, an economic writer. That ups to two thirds of women, when you scale down two women that were surveyed. Now Governor Greg Abbott says hes not worried about an exodus of economic activity. In fact, he thinks some businesses support their social stAnds here. Even cited Elon Musk, specifically, And-tesla'>Spacex And Tesla have a presence over here. But Elon Musk responded on twitter saying, you know, in general, i think thAt The will, of the government should not impose its will on the people. Then he also wanted to stay out of politics. A lot of companies take that stance, basically staying quiet, staying out of it. Maybe they do not want to alienate their customers, or their employees. At t And oracle, some of the biggest employers here in texas declined to comment, as well as google And dell, to Big Tech Companies that have a presence here. Also, tax Incentives Trump was ideological divides. It always comes down to that. Good point. But also, here is the other thing. You know, a lot of these companies, including many of the major corporations in texas have threatened to boycott, threatened to make plenty of actions, put out some downing stated statements, when it came to restricting the voter rights laws. Now that you have lyft, which did not mince words, And these other companies, are the people who are thinking thAt This would actually make a difference . Lyft put out a statement, who were, plan to cover any bills are their employees who get sued under these laws. Are more companies looking at making a similar move . You, know there are a couple of interesting things And play. Number one, it is Labor Day weekend. Some Pr Folks might be out of the office, we might see more statements on tuesday when they can decide how they want to eloquently word their stance. Because this is a sensitive issue, right . And, a nation deeply divided, it is an emotional issue. They just want to make sure thAt They word things in a way that will not hurt their business. This new ban is happening the same week that Voting Bill passed through the senate. How do you feel about the prediction you made, just two weeks later . Sadly enough, first of all, good morning. I was hoping i could be proven wrong. I was hoping that my colleagues who are more senior than me, somehow had some insight into why it was going to go on, that we would have something good happen. Sadly enough, i knew the reality of what had been going on, in texas. Most people are now just learning about this Abortion Ban, but this happened during the regular session. It takes about 90 days for our laws to become effective, unless they are voted in a single majority. Then, they become effective immediately. A majority of these laws have been so divisive that no, the majority of them were not voted in as the majority. It is sad. Sadly enough, what most people are not talking about is, in this special session, they also had this voter suppression bill, there is another Abortion Ban coming. There was another one to be added. Unfortunately, the governor also wanted to deal with medications that women may take in order to provide an abortion. That was taken up in a second special session, No One is talking about that. Are you talking about a morning after pill or what . No, but when someone is actually pregnant, they have a few options. They could actually go to a doctor And have a procedure, depending on how early on they are in their pregnancy, they might actually be able to take a pill, that would then allow the embryo to pass. Okay. The governor also wanted to outlaw that, to make sure he doubled down. How likely is thAt To pass . It is already passed. It is awaiting his signature. Yesterday, you pointed out the overwhelming majority of people moving to texas are people of color. How well are those people represented in the State House . How much of an impact are many of these bills having on those people . Well, they are not represented. I mean, it is sad to say, And i should not laugh. But they are not represented. We do not have a representative government. When we look At The Republican Party in texas, 83 republicans to 67 democrats, And those 83 republicans, only seven of them are women. Only three of them are people of color. There is one blackmail, there is one hispanic male, And there is one asian female. That is it. That is not whAt Texas looks like. Maybe juxtapose that with the 67 democrats, the vast majority of the 67 democrats are hispanic, african americans, And then caucasians. We are almost 50 when it comes to men versus women. Sadly enough, we are looking at redistricting. We know that all of this has been about a power grab, from the Voting Fight that we have had, to now, the fight we will have as it relates to these new laws. We know texas does not want to represent people. WhAt They want is our bodies, so thAt They can count our bodies, so they could do greAt Things like say, sent additional representation to congress, but they dont want us to have a say so in who goes to congress. So it will be interesting to see the fallout that will ensue. We will get to a couple of other things. On twitter, you pointed out the republican caucus brought this bill was made up of 76 men, And seven women. Kind of reminded many of this amazing clip from hbos veep, take a look. If men got pregnant, you can get an abortion At The atm, lets state the obvious [laughs] i mean, you kind of have to have, otherwise you are going to cry, i guess . Yes. Yes. I mean, it is true though, right . You have all of these men saying, hey, women, this is what you need to do with your bodies, right . Men have no idea about the decisions these women are making, men who will not be held accountable. We are talking about how we had to argue as it related to rapists, not being able to sue under this bill. That was an amendment we had to make, because sadly enough, even if you are raped, a child of rape, you have to carry that child. Even a ten year old child would have to carry this child. So we needed to do an amendment to make sure the rapists could not profit off of their bad behavior. I want us to pull up that full screen again, because its jawdropping. 76 men to just seven women are among the caucus that brought about this bill. A year ago this month, we lost ruth bader ginsburg. I know, you filled the book really prominently, really quickly. What do you think she would make of what you guys are doing in texas . You know, we are really spitting on the legacy known as rbg, to be perfectly honest. I am sure the governor is happy to hear me say something like that. Do any woman in this country, we know that she has been a hero, has consistently fought for womens rights. I could only imagine the scathing opinion, the scathing opinion she would have written. And i do not know thAt The court would have ruled the way thAt They did, obviously, if she was on the court, numbers would have been different. Even if its kinder replaced, sonia on the court, i dont know. I feel like she brought in a level of influence we have not seen on that court since she has left. So i want to say i am sorry to her. Would you recommend they get tested before or after. . Well, we are saying if you are not vaccinated, do not travel. In some ways, this is no Surprise Given what we know about the taliban And their views of women. But there have been some thinking, that maybe they would try to show the international community thAt They have changed by giving women at least some minor ministerial roles. The word from the taliban spokesman is thAt They cannot be ministers, guys . By inclusive, the men that women who have given birth to men will be included in the government, i guess .
