Pregnancy, before many women even know theyre pregnant, but it alSo provides no exceptions for rape or incest. And it relies on citizens, regular citizens just like you and me to enforce it, basically letting them sue anybody who helps a woman get an abortion and awards them ten stacks if they succeed. The most pernicious thing about the Texas Law, it Sort of creates a Vigilante System where people get rewards to go out anyway. And it just seems i know this Sounds ridiculous, almost unamerican what were talking about. President biden says the Justice Department is looking At The legality of the new restrictive abortion law, but this is a huge blow to roe v. Wade. It has spurred democratic leaders to try to codify the protections into federal law after the Supreme Court just allowed it to stand. But no surprise, other states are already working to use the law as a blueprint for copycat measures, and Texas Lawmakers have advanced yet another restrictive bill limiting access to abortion medication. But honestly, you guys, its the hypocrisy for me. These republican lawmakers fix their mouths claiming theyre prolife, but they allow texans to carry guns with no permit or no training. Theyre against the Life Saving Vaccine And Mask mandates. So news flash, its not even giving you all what you think its supposed to give. Joining me now the President And Ceo of whole womans health. Shes the Lead Plaintiff challenging the Texas Law and our pal ellie mos tall, Justice Correspondent At The nation. Im So happy to have you with us this morning. I know this judge issued this temporary protection last night. Tell me whAt This means and what are your next steps . So this temporary protection basically blocks texas right to life, but it doesnt give us the kind of broad protection that we really need and thAt The people who are seeking Abortion Services really need. This blocks one organization, which i think is a great Step In the right direction. These are the people that had that crazy Whistleblower Site up on the internet, and So it gives us Some protection there, but all of the abortion funds and all of the other providers in the state are seeking much broader justice than this. This is a great first step, but weve got to knock this law down because the ramifications not only across the country but really for individual lives across the state of texas where people are being denied access to safe abortion in one of the largest states in our country on our watch is unacceptable. Its unacceptable, i am outraged and im So happy to have you on this morning because i know youre outraged too. Ive seen your tweet threads. This entire thing about protecting the fetus when they care So little for life in this country is beyond comprehension. It just feels like they really must hate women in texas and all across the country. How is it possible the Supreme Court allowed this to stand . I know thAt They havent ruled on it. But they could rule later. We have an actually Hand Maid on the court. Im not So excited about depending on them protecting me and my right to choose. If they cared about life they would be giving women 10,000 and free Health Care to bring pregnancies to term. Not giving people 10,000 to rAt Them out to the safe. Its everything to do with the control of womens bodies, but thats whAt The Supreme Court, five of those justices, thats whAt Theyre down for. Do not Sugar Coat this. Its not thAt The supreme Court Couldnt Figure out how to rule. WhAt The Supreme Court did was take 50 years of precedent that was roe v. Wade and take 30 years of precedent that was planned Parenthood V Casey and throw it out the window. Thats where we are now. Roe is dead. All Roe Stands for is the proposition that before fetal viability, which is 24 weeks, not six, before fetal viability, the government cannot restrict a womans right to choose. If texas can restrict a womans right to choose after six weeks, if florida can do it, if South-dakota'>South Dakota can do it, if misSouri can do it, if arkansas could do it, if the entire former confederacy could do it, roe v. Wade doesnt mean anything. For the bide administration to be saying now the department of justice is going to look into the legality of it. Texas passed this law in may. What do you mean youre looking into it now . Perhaps the biden administration thought the Supreme Court would do Something, if they thought that, they havent been paying attention. Roe v. Wade was on Life Support the Moment Ruth Bader ginsburg slipped this mortal coil. The moment that woman stopped drawing breath, roe v. Wade was in their sights, and we know this. For the biden administration to be like oh, who could have thought, this is whAt They promised to do. So how are we not then ready with a federal response for whAt They have done, since all they have done is whAt They said they were going to do. How are we not ready for that . How indeed, and you know i wake up every morning and want to scream we tried to tell you. We tried to tell you. Please nobody ever mention Susan Collins to me because she was the main one defending this. So amy, i want to kick it back to you. The frightening thing about this is incentivizing vigilantes. You can imagine my lived experience in this country. Vigilante justice is Something that is frightening. We know what happens when dangerous white men are in power and decide to exert that power over those of us who are not in power. What does this mean for like uber drivers who are taking a woman to an Abortion Clinic or a Family Member whos taking a woman outside the state or, you know, i dont think people realize were going back to hangers and seedy hotels and things that really put a womans life at risk. Right, i think we are facing draconian is not even the right word. If you think about the bounty hunting, the vigilante Sort of times in our past of hunting freed slaves. I mean, thats the kind of law thAt This is. Its incentivizing vigilantes. Its incentivizing the people who have been terrorizing us at Abortion Clinics for decades. They are the same people who are in washington, d. C. , on January 6th literally we saw our protesters there on the video. These folks are against a whole lot of things that many of us in this country believe very deeply. And i think its an awakening. Its an awakening far too late. Government abbott signed this bill early in may, but theres been a trajectory on restrictions of Peoples Access to abortion in the midwest and the South for decades. Whats emerging are, you know, rights that depend upon where you live, and they depend upon your race and your class and who you happen to be, who can pay for you. This is not the united states that were trying to build. And So weve got to look At The impact on the people on the ground, our Clinic Staff who are being put in the position of being agents of the state today, turning people away who they are fully prepared and committed to help. This is cruel and its inhumane and should not be happening on our watch. Its inhumane and look, to get back to the Gun Law they alSo passed where you can carry a weapon, go training, no permit. It is not unreaSonable to think that one of these crazy yahoos will think, well, ive got to protect this woman, im going to use this weapon. Weve seen other states do this, South-dakota'>South Dakota, mississippi, who has a case before the Supreme Court. What can be done . What should we be demanding of the biden administration to immediately bring this to a Screeching Halt . I heard your frustration. What im looking for is how do we stop this . None of this is easy, guys, and none of this is clean. To stop these people At This point, its going to require Some creativity and the biden administration willing to get its hands dirty. There are Solutions here, but theres no silver bullet, theres Nothing Biden can do and stay behind oh, this is institutionally the way thAt Things no, no, no, you can to get crazy, you have to be willing to go Buck Wild in order to stop them. One option would be for biden to federalize doctors, hire a federal force of doctors, send them into texas to protect peoples constitutional rights. Because the Texas Law is only enforceable through private civil action, federal employees are protected from private civil lawsuits through the doctrine of qualified immunity, which most of the time i hate. Lets turn it around on them and protect people providing constitutionally one way to get around the Hyde Amendment is not to pass it in the next budget. Its not a constitutional principle. We could just not pass it in the budget, boom, no Hyde Amendment. But since again apparently this country is run by Joe Manchin and kyrsten sinema, that is not an option. One way to get around the Hyde Amendment is to make abortions free. They already should be free. No reaSon a poor woman should have to pay, especially since they Cant Use Medicaid to pay for abortions under the Hyde Amendment. You make the doctors privately funded. I know that private funding of state public private partnerships can get around State Regulations because i saw republicans do it all the time with the private priSon system, So i know that works. Right . That will get you around the Hyde Amendment in that situation. Theres alSo federal enclave law. That would allow Military Bases to basically perform medical services without being sued by, again, private citizens. You have Some Hyde Amendment problems there. That would probably litigate it. I would tell the Supreme Court to go enforce their Hyde Amendment thought bubbles while were protecting constitutional rights. Theres various laws on the books, this is where we are at, that were meant to stop the klan to stop Jim Crow measures that perhaps could be taken against private citizens who are klanning themselves up to stop women from accessing their constitutional right. Its a difficult legal case, all right . Im not trying to blow smoke here. Like its difficult to make these arguments, but you could argue that people acting under the color of law as private citizens are to deprive people of their rights is a violation of u. S. Code section 42, 1983. So there are things we can do. None of it is clean. None of it is easy. All of it should be done now. All of the above what we should be doing now and giving women as much access to their constitutionally protected freedoms as possible until democrats pack the court. Yeah, and honestly, the Texas Taliban is completely out of step with the rest of the country because the majority of americans support legal and safe abortions. But honestly, who cares what everybody thinks except for the woman carrying the child. So thank you So much, Amy Hatch Miller and Ely Mystal for bringing context. This is when extremist groups are planning a rally to demand justice in quotes for those who have been charged in the original insurrection. And this is according to the Ap And Cbs news. In this climate, it would be wise for republican lawmakers to watch their words and not pour any fuel on this fire because quite frankly, you all only bring that smoke when youre not outnumbered. Like Son-cawthorn'>Rep MadiSon Cawthorn of North Carolina who was caught on tape last week saying this, if our Election Systems continue to be rigged and continue to be stolen, then its going to lead to one place and thats bloodshed. Joining me now, former republican congressman of florida, Carlos Curbelo and political strategist lucy caldwell. Two of my favorite people to have this discussion with. This march thats happening or planned for september 18th, what i find baffling but not quite surprising is they actually invite members of congress to participate. Do you think that Some of your former colleagues In The House or the senate will actually show up to this march, and if So, who . I think a handful probably will, the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene and others. I mean, thats what has happened to the republican party, tiffany. Ill give you Some perspective. When i arrived in congress in 2015, the most extreme republicans were those who refused to Vote for any tax increases, who would only Vote for budgets that would cut government spending, and while we disagreed with their tactics, i mean, its okay to have a debate about the Size And Role of government. Todays extremist republicans are people who believe in lies, who promote violence. So the party has changed drastically. Theres definitely a before and after Donald Trump, and thats why its possible even for people to come up with an idea like this kind of march to defend criminals, and its conceivable and sad that Some members of congress might actually show up to be a part of it. Yeah, i mean, thats the crazy part, that its actually conceivable. So lucy, ill ask you, you know, within the slate of kind of crazy candidates, im looking at Herschel Walker out of georgia, the accusations made of him by his exwife, very trumpian candidates running for the senate and the lower chamber In The House. This is going to create a nightmare for folks like Mitch Mcconnell whos a nightmare for the rest of the us, when hes really tried to, you know, get away from this trump mantra, but this is the monster they created. He is frankenstein, and this is the monster he created. How are you advising people to Vote down ballot since youre still a republican . Yeah, well, fortunately for me i am not still a republican because i could not possibly be asSociated with the things happening At The top of the ballot, but alSo even further down than youre talking about. Look, heres the real table take, there is no posttrump party where all these republicans wake up, right . The good news is the republican party is becoming more of a regional party. The Bad News is thats good news for people who care about democracy. The Bad News is its not happening nearly fast enough, and you know, people are very focused on the senate and the house races, im really focused on whats happening even lower down. Right now redistricting is going on. Democrats control only 11 states when it comes to redistricting. Republicans have massively outpaced them. Youre going to see even worse districts. You have gobs of republican governors who could not get elected today who are going to be termed out, and we are not seeing a return to normalcy. Theres an article in propublica this week about how steve bannon, who kind of embodies the protofascism that is now the republican party has made quick work of installing people at every level, election clerks, you name it, So i would say to people, unfortunately no matter how near and dear former tenants of the republican party are to you, ideas like physical conservatism or the Size And Scope of government, those are kind of irrelevant when you have people At The lowest level of republican races claiming thAt The election was stolen or that we need to, you know, fight off the enemy from within, you know. This is not your grandmas republican party and this is Something that we have to be on guard of. School board races, every level. Yeah, let me just say your grandmas republican Party Wasnt So kind to a lot of people in the country either. I want to circle back with you on that. Take a listen to Some of the candidates and i want to ask you about them on the other side. This woman who tried to break the contract not to compete and then accused me of hitting on her. Thats how she put it. If you had seen her, you would know thAt The picture would be a complete defense. Im just saying. He held a gun to my temple and said he was going to blow my brains out. Congressman, i ask you every time youre on, im going to ask you again, when you have these folks who are on the ballot, lets say they go on to win the gop primary. Youve got Marco Rubio in florida, youve got Val Demings running against him for that senate seat. If these folks are going to keep allowing the kind of behavior that weve seen, theyre going to keep paving the way for other marches like this to happen, they are pretty much adopting every maga talking point, what do you advise people to do when voting down ballot, particularly will you support Marco Rubio given what weve heard from him under the Trump Era . Well, tiffany, ill tell you those clips that you just played, they remind me of todd aiken, sharon angle, Roy Moore in alabama. So if republicans do nominate those kinds of candidates, it is very likely thAt They will lose, sure. During the midterm elections, the Opposition Party tends to gain seats, but thats not always the case, and Mitch Mcconnell does have nightmares about Some of these candidates because they have cost him seats in the past. So you can expect mcconnell to try to avoid Some of these people making the november ballot. But republicans will get punished if they put forward these kinds of candidates, and i will say, i mean, compared to Some of these clips we just heard from Some of these candidates, they do make people like Marco Rubio seem a lot more centrist and moderate. Even in a state like alabama, okay, where a democrat won, Something inconceivable to a lot of people. That can happen again and dont count Donald Trump out. He can save this election for democrats, a lot of people give him credit for democrats winning two Georgia Senate seats At The end of last year. Donald trump can make that possible again for democrats. Yeah, i dont know how many people think Marco Rubio is a centrist or moderate At This point. Im going to keep inviting you on, and were going to keep talking about it as the Florida Senate Race gets closer. Lucy, were way over time, but i want to ask you this question because we talked a little bit about it. White women are a big Support Ert of the republican party. Its kind of baffling to me, you see these antichoice laws coming out. The republican party does not adopt policies, you know, when it comes to like Health Care and Child Care, et cetera. Why do you think a majority of White Women continue to be loyal to the republican party . Look, i think thAt This goes back to what a regional party the party has become, but the republican has really succeeded in really messaging itself as the party of the family, the party of school choice, the party of you know whats best for your family. For a lot of republicans, the kind of Obama Era Julia meme, that doesnt work for them. And So i think thAt That is really what you see. I mean, frankly, with all due respect to congressman curbelo, the fact that were in a moment where even republicans who have spoken out against trump or against the protofascism dont feel thAt They can say unequivocally thAt They wont support people like Marco Rubio. That is the same thing happening in these individual communities. White women who dont feel like they can break away. We have to figure out how to change that. But tiffany, let me just tell you real quick, if republicans nominate candidates like the ones we just saw on this screen, those White Women will abandon them, and they will Vote for democrats. They have done it in the past, they will do it again. We have not seen that in droves, i have to tell you, congressman, but you guys are my favorite to have this healthy exchange of ideas and ideology with. I do want to read a statement that cnn asked Larry Elder about this incident that we played earlier last week in an interview, and he responded the whole point behind your series of questions is do i respect women and i dont. I have a great deal of respect for women, ive never been accused of sexual harassment. Ive never been accused of sexual abuse. Very confusing statement, but i at least wanted to read it. Congresswoman, i know you had a busy saturday, and lucy, i always love talking to you. Thank you well see you next time. Coming up next, louisiana residents affected by Hurricane Ida may not see their power back on until the end of the month. This is abSolutely shameful. Were going to talk about the problem with the Power Company right after the break. Stay with us. R the break. Stay with us time. Yeah, its time for grilled cheese. I just want to get out. I have kids, and its very hot. I just went and bought Some fans hoping they help. Its gone on long enough, So i just wish that wed get our electricity Soon. New orleans has got to do better. The states got to do better for us when these storms come through. All right, today marks the sixth day without power for just you should 600,000 customers in Southern louisiana. Now, for Some people it could be days or even weeks before electricity is fully restored. This kind of catastrophic Power Failure was not supposed to happen, but it did thanks in part To Entergy, the electric monopoly in New Orleans. It uses a specter of a storm to build a natural Gas Power Plant in New Orleans east Steam Rolling Black Vietnamese American and latino residents who fought against it. Entergy hired actors to parade as citizens at council meetings, all while promising the plant would jump start the city after a hurricane. So the mothers worry they will die from Heat Stroke and cooling their kids in cars and folks spending their nights by candlelight, they want answers and help. Joining me now is logan atkinSon burke, the Executive Director At The alliance for affordable energy. Logan, thanks So much for being here. Its a nightmare to watch these people go through this. Ive watched interviews with mothers in the car with their kids. How exactly did entergy fail the citizens of louisiana . Well, thanks for having me, tiffany. What were seeing is not nearly enough information actually about how entergy has failed the communities both in New Orleans and surrounding. You mentioned that Some folks are not expected to have power for weeks. I want to make sure that were definitely talking about those folks in the coastal parishes, the River Parishes who are being kept in the dark literally and metaphorically in terms of information that what has happened here, what was the real failure when we were told this particular Power Plant was going to Solve everybodys problems. What does this mean for people who live in these neighborhoods. I think its striking thAt The Power Plant was built in a predominantly black and vietnamese neighborhood. Ive been in that neighborhood in 2005 after katrina struck. Whats the danger for having Something like this in this neighborhood . Well, the very communities in louisiana who are bearing the brunt of these Climate Change exacerbated storms are the very same communities that have historically been bearing the environmental injustices of the Fossil Fuel Industry. Thats true of most of our Power Plants in the state. Thats alSo true of the Petra Chemical plants, the refineries, the fertilizer plants. These who have been forced to effectively be a Sacrifice Zone for the Fossil Fuel Industry are now alSo a Sacrifice Zone to this electric investorowned utility, who has been Shareholder Profit over people for years. I think thats true. This is why we have to have these conversations, my Colleague Allie velshi talked about this in the last hour. Why cant with go hard and look at Renewable Energy. The New Orleans plant would be able to keep powering through hot summer days and storms. However, all eight of their transmissions in New Orleans failed. What happened here . Well, what happened here is a failure to plan for the century were in, a failure to plan for Climate Change and the storms that are coming Faster and harder, and a failure to listen to the communities who want not just the same old systems that are clearly not set up for this, that weve been depending on for the last century. Instead, what communities have been saying is we want Solar. We want Solar and storage. We want microgrids and Energy Efficiency because we know thAt The Transmission Systems that have been ignored by the utilities are not going to be able to weather these kinds of storms. So how do we keep People Safe and healthy when these things fail . And the Answer Cant be backup Diesel And Gas generators because thats actually sending more people to the hospital and killing people than floods have been doing in louisiana the last couple of years. And So whAt The utilities have not done is listen to the communities who are their customers, what regulators must do is begin to listen to those communities who know whAt They need and not the utilities who know whAt Their shareholders want. So you know, we saw this happen in texas or earlier this year during the winter storm. You know, last summer officials in california ordered Rolling Blackouts during a heat wave. This is Something thats going to keep happening. Are the texas and Louisiana Energy Grid citations, are they similar . Are they connected . Theres No Doubt thAt Theyre connected. Theyre connected in terms of what is fueling these kienz kinds of storms, but theyre alSo connected in terms of the kind of planning that we need to be doing across our electric system, not just moving to renewables certainly, we abSolutely have to be moving to 100 Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, but we alSo have to be thinking about how do we adapt our Energy Systems and that goes all the way down to the house level. How do we adapt those systems to be responsive and ready and resilient to the kinds of events that we are seeing coming whether its extreme cold, extreme heat and humidity, or even fire. These kinds of storms are connected. We know that ida alone started in the Gulf Of Mexico and wrought havoc all the way across all the way up into no, and New Jersey and everywhere in between has been experiencing these storms. That means we have to be planning to keep People Safe and healthy in their homes, in their communities because we alSo know were not planning for the kinds of necessary evacuations to keep People Safe. And So thats why we have to be focusing on people, and thats not just At The utility level. Its not just, although certainly it very much is the regulatory level, the louisiana public service commission, the New Orleans city council, but its alSo when you look At The kinds of money that could be coming from the reconciliation bill, from the Infrastructure Bill, that money cannot be just shunted to the Fossil Fuel Industry for false Solutions. That money must be put into the hands of people and communities who know whAt They need to keep themselves safe. Yeah. What were seeing of this Infrastructure Bill is money for false Solutions. That cannot happen. We need whAt The biden administration has already said is they intend to focus on whAt They call justice 40, which is spending 40 of this money in the communities that have been disadvantaged over time. That means this is the perfect Test Case to launch this exactly, yeah, im So Sorry, were running out of time, but i just wanted to get your point. Congresswoman Cori Bush has introduced a bill. Fossil fuels, its certainly time to do Something different. We did reach out To Entergy for comment on this story. We didnt hear back from them. A little note, entergy pulled funding from black owned station when they spoke out about it. So the finances behind these Utility Companies are very intimidating when people are trying to fight against them. Thank you So much logan burke for joining us and wed love to have you back. Coming up next, football is back, and you know im excited to talk about sports but the seaSon returns with plenty of issues from Player Vaccine controversies to nasty and belligerent fans. Were going to talk about that with Michael Smith. Stay with us. With Michael Smith stay with us i thought i was managing my moderate to severe crohns disease. Then i realized Something was missing. Hey dad, dinner hey look who stopped by daddys office. Wait, you work here . The Chevy Silverado with the available multiflex tailgate. Find new flexibility. Find new roads. Chevrolet. All right. Are you ready for Some football . The new Son'>Nfl SeaSon kicks off thursday. Some players and fans already seem to be fumbling on the snap. Here to break it down is the Cross Connection chief Sports Correspondent and certified lover boy imperSonator, Michael Smith, cohost of brother from another on peacock tv. You know im So excited to talk about all of this with you. I have to first ask this question, its a rumor. We havent actually confirmed this. But cam newton, did he really give up that bag because he did not want to get vaccinated . He definitely fumbled. Well see how he recovers. I mean, look, i cant say that it was because he wasnt vaccinated thAt The patriots cut him this past week. Him not being vaccinated and a misunderstanding about the daily Testing Process forced him to be away from the team for five days, and in thAt Time the first Round Draft Pick thAt The patriots took, Mac Jones Out of alabama, he seized the moment, and he beat cam out. Now, couple that with the notion that if youre an unvaccinated player, the protocols are So much stricter and youre more often in danger of missing games or missing practices if youre in close contact, all of that contributed to Cam Being cut by the patriots. It wasnt just because hes unvaccinated, but it certainly opened the door and gave the patriots an excuse to cut him. Theyll never say it because the Head Coach in jackSonville Urban Meyer is being investigated by the Sociation'>Players AsSociation for saying that unvaccinated or vaccinated factors into whether or not you make the team. Which is kind of crazy, right . Your former her of his and hers jamel hill, my friend tweeted, you know, about players being he has about it about this. A vaccine thats proven to be wildly effective and protects people against a potentially deadly virus, will get a Nfl Player to retire, but not we can talk about the players, im really interested in the fan behavior. I want you to take a look at Some of these fights that weve seen fans participate in and well talk about it on the other side. Shut up shut up no get the [ bleep ] out dont touch me. Okay. Michael, that first video, im telling you it would have been a problem. That smoke is not really invited. The second video, what is the deal with fans . Like are we able to like have Football Games . Its not just the fan behavior, but its alSo these Mask Mandates that are not really centralized. Some stadiums say you have to wear them. Some dont. How are you going to regulate this when theyre belligerent and drunk and eating. What are we to expect this seaSon . Well, that remains to be seen want right now nfl stadiums in particular are full capacity. You have a couple of college stadiums, lsu, tulane, the Oregon Schools that are looking for proof of Vaccination Or Proof of a negative covid test. In the nfl you have a couple of stadiums, the superdome in New Orleans, which obviously has been compromised by Hurricane Ida and the raiders stadium. Its alSo offering vaccinations outside the stadium, and if you get in, you can wear a mask. Its going to be a mess, not to mention local and state policies that are going to influence this. Right now its full capacity as we get deeper into this surge, they could end up starting to limit the amount of people that can gather in various places. Just one quick point, which you were making about the players. 93 of players are vaccinated. Lets point that out. 93 are, and one Player Denzel Perryman said yesterday im tired of being an outcast. I cant even eat with my guys. Im thinking about getting the vaccine. Theres antivaxxers and Vaccine Hesitancy, which as time goes on maybe more players and maybe more fans will be inspired either to get in these games or theyll see their favorite players getting vaccinated and wise up. Welcome back to the Cross Connection. Lets make it make sense. Tiffany, this is perry from san francisco. Ive always been wondering why biden doesnt institute the Election Days as a federal holiday. I think it could easily be done, Something as a reconciliation, since it would save money in legal fees and hassles from every american that doesnt have convenient jobs to take off and go to voting. So i think that would be a very good use of the reconciliation. Thank you, perry, for that great question. The simple answer for why President Biden doesnt make Election Day a federal holiday, by using the reconciliation process, is basically because he cant. Now, remember, reconciliation is a way for congress to bypass the Senate Filibuster and its 60 Vote threshold. Bills passed only need a simple majority to pass the senate. But there is a catch. Only bills having to do directly with federal spending and revenue, aka taxes, can be passed this way. Biden and democrats in congress are using reconciliation to try to pass the infrastructure plan, which includes universal prek and free community college tuition. But even that is looking increasingly dicey, thanks to senator, i love to filibuster, Joe Manchin. This week he called for a, quote, strategic pause in bidens agenda. Basically your boy is threatening to Vote against the bill because of Some flimsy concerns he has about the national debt. Now, sadly, its alSo not the first Time Manchin decided to throw sand on bidens agenda. You remember back in march when he demanded a 100 reduction in Unemployment Benefits in exchange for his Vote. 50 50 senate, because of Manchin Americans got less than they can have and manchin got the satisfaction of helping his republican Friends Whittle down a package they all Voted against away. When senate returns on september 13th, well see if manchin wants that smoke or hes just blowing it. Back to your question about using reconciliation for Voting Rights legislation. Back in July Amy Klobuchar did floAt The idea of including Voting Rights Measures in the infrastructure package. This is a long shot and would need the approval of the senate parliamentarian. So the best and maybe only chance of protecting Voting Rights on the federal level is by abolishing the filibuster, Which Manchin Has said hes not vibing with. Seriously, you guys, why is this guy, Joe Manchin, the most powerful perSon in washington . If only i could make that make sense. Now, for those of you at home, you know the drill by now. He was a Son, a nephew, a brother and a friendly. When he died, he was only 23 years old. He had his full life ahead of him and his family and friends must now go on and live without him. Welcome back to the Cross Connection. We have a lot of Trending Topics to get to, but we begin with big developments in three high profile cases of Police Brutality, with Law Enforcement facing accountability for their actions. On wednesday, three Police Officers and two paramedics were charged in the death of elijah mcclain. This is a 23yearold young man who was walking home from a store in aurora, colorado, when police placed him in a chokehold and injected him with the Sedative Ketamine in august of 2019. Meanwhile, in minneSota, Kim Potter, the Police Officer who shot Donte Wright during a Traffic Stop in april, claiming she meant to use her taser instead the facing a more serious charge of first Degree Manslaughter and in georgia a former prosecutor was indicted for protecting the alleged vigilantes who shot and killed arbery. Joining us is editorinchief for Teen Voek and Executive Director of the national Justice Coalition and Executive Director for next Gen America. David, i want to kick it off with you because, looking At These cases of these three black men who were killed unnecessarily, you know, i see, yes, there are consequences and there are charges and indictments, but, honestly, there is no justice because these three men are not here and we had to endure the pain of witnessing more black bodies being harmed and their families have to go this christmas and next christmas and birthdays and holidays without them. What is your thought on all of this . I appreciate you, tiffany. I have three thoughts, no surprise. The first is i am tired. I found out about what happened in the case of ar maude arbery, the same day i learned my brother had covid. And i just want to knowledge how frustratingly sad it is thAt There are So many incidents of murder, and Elijah In Particular was murdered, arbery was alSo murdered. But how sad it is that we dont have the time or bandwidth to talk about their facts thAt Their parents wont be able to hold them physically while were rushing to talk about the audacity in the defense of white supremacy. So im frustrated when we think about what happened to our brother elijah because one in four black people are killed by the police. 50 of people killed by the police have a disability and what we know about the way white supremacy, and what i think about what happened to brother elijah and those Brothers And Sisters Nonbinary and nonconforming im frustrated by the lack of justice and saddened by the lack of accountability. We should all be clear thAt The Aurora Police Station issued a defense of the police saying thAt They did nothing wrong. And thats sad when we think about how frighteningly terrorizing it is to be black in america. And when you consider all the people who were complicit, really. So youre right, the Aurora Police lied to exonerate the five Police Officers and paramedics who respectively Choked Mcclain and gave him ketamine. So this is alSo the case as well, christina, in the arbery case. This attorney who was charged, she was basically favoring the vigilante people who shot them. She was able to find compassion for them while devaluing black life. It shows that you dont really have to pull the trigger to play a role in the Harm And Killing of black bodies. Whats your take on this . What we see is an entire Justice System which is complicit with the systemic Abuse And Murdering of black people across this country. In ahmaud arberys case, not only did you have vigilantes videotaped harassing him, shooting him, that you had District Attorney Jackie johnSon Helping Shield these vigilantes, trying to make sure thAt They would not be arrested, not be held accountable and now she is facing indictment. What i want to say is were seeing this is gaining Traction And News because were seeing just a small level of accountability for the people that have abused their positions of power and black bodies, black families have suffered the consequences for years. But we are seeing just a small measure of accountability because we saw the largest Protest Movements in american History Force the Justice System to reconcile with the pain that black families have been experiencing for generations in this country. And weve got to keep pushing and standing together because that is how we got to even just the slightest level of accountability. And you are right, this is not justice. This is just basic accountability. And i just want to add, you know, certainly black families have dealt with this for generations, but people in the tristate area in New York, there are a lot of latino people caught up in Police Brutality as well. So sadly, there are plenty of hashtags to go around. I want to talk about the kim Potter Case because this happened At The same time, on the heels of the george floyd murder. Its interesting this Police Officer claims she thought she was using her taser. I dont know that a taser feels or looks like a gun, but what i do know is that Police Officers make these mistakes far too frequently and the casualties, more often, look like me. This is Something that you all have discussed and addressed at Teen Vogue before. Whats your thoughts on the way this is all playing out with people looking At This as justice, but Some of us saying, nope, its still not enough . I think thats exactly right and i think a lot of young people feel that way, young people who have spent more entire lives Coming Up with hashtags, going to these protests, seeing these incidents of Police Brutality and, unfortunately, fatality. Proliferating across Social media. So i will say in the case of Kim Potter and Donte Wright, we know that Sota-attorney'>MinneSota Attorney general Son'>Keith ElliSon has really made Accountability Part of his agenda, part of his platform and thats one reaSon hes upgraded charges for her in this case. But just like you said with potter and her colleagues claiming that it was a mistake and she meant to pull a taser instead of a handgun, thats a fatal mistake you cant be making and shes a veteran of the Police Force for 26 years. How are you on the Police Force for 26 years making a fatal mistake like that leading to Somebody elses unnecessary death . And if you dig back into her history, shes been part of problematic incidents before and yet shes still allowed to go out on these patrols and, unfortunately, deal with this. And she was training Somebody At The time. She had an officer with her, which is ridiculous. Its really hard going through life like this because you leave your house and you have to focus on staying alive, you worry about your kids. So its hard to focus on things like Climate Change, which is alSo Something that, you know, is killing and damaging us all. From Hurricane Ida decimating parts of the Gulf Coast to all of the other things that were seeing play out in the country. So record rainfall in New York city, the fires in california still burning and displacing thousands of people. One thing is clear, this is a problem we cannot ignore. Christina, youre very active in Voting Rights. How do we make this a bigger issue . Because i have to say, when you leave your house and youre worried about staying alive in the moment, its hard to think about Climate Change, even though its here but it has a longer, slower impact on our lives. Well, next Gen America we mobilize one Voters, one in line that went out to the polls last election. One of their top issues is Climate Change. And we are seeing unprecedented consequences because of Climate Change. Just this year alone in the pacific northwest, over 700 people dead because of Climate Change. The unprecedented flooding in the northeast left nearly 50 dead. In texas we saw over 200 people die because of the texas freeze. This is not even the full list of people that have been killed. This year alone in our country because of Climate Change. And, you know, what we see right now in washington, we have an incredible 3. 5 trillion Reconciliation Package that needs passed now. What i see from a generation of young people that want action on Climate Change is that we are the largest economy in the world, young people know we have the reSources, the technology, and millions of Hard Working Americans that can actually come together and Solve this climate crisis, but we all know what we have are just a few politicians, particularly in the senate, that are standing in the way of Policy Change and literally on this issue of Climate Change, if we dont act, we have everything to lose. And At This Point Inaction is suicidal and it is facing an entire generation of Young Americans and we are living and experiencing just a taste of what we are going to face in the near future if we dont act now. David, look, maybe not with you because youre very policy heavy, but, honestly, if you think about Some of our friends and conversations that weve had, you say Climate Change and your Eyes Kind of glaze over. People are more prone to deal with things that are right in their face. A lot of people dont realize, Climate Change is right in your face, particularly in black and brown neighborhoods. A study found that more than 30 of black New Orleans residents didnt own cars when katrina hit So it made it difficult for them to leave in the storm. How can we make Climate Change a priority . As you know, the national Justice Coalition is At The intersection and i want to acknowledge to the point of introduction that So many black lgbtq people dont have houses, dont have homes. We deal with housing insecurity. So the thing i grapple with in this moment of acknowledgment, this isnt just about Climate Change or natural disasters but the Policy Decisions that City Planners are making. This is about the lack of ethical City Planning that has resulted in the widening of roads, the natural processes that deal with water. And i want us to be clear that we have an obligation to think about the climate, the earth that we are inhabiting for a short period of time and we need to ensure that City Planners and those that make decisions At The municipal level have an understanding of and experiences with communities who are most disaffected. Yeah, completely. I just want to give you a quick two seconds before we move on. Climate change is Something that i do think with Some pockets people are into it. I know Team Vogue has covered such issues. What is a way that you use the issue to make it more palatable to people and make people more engaged around the subject . Its exactly what youre doing now, honestly. I think Team Vogue does do a great job, but i think where national News Media is often failing when theyre covering these disasters is thAt Theyre not linking them to Climate Change. Were not bringing on Climate Scientists who are pointing out the crisis is actually making hurricanes, floods, wildfires worse. There is a very direct scientific link. So we try to point that out in every single story we cover about disasters or destruction and i think, you know, media matters, does a great job of covering tallies on this score and they put out data this week that showed way more Cable News and Broadcast News segments that covered ida and its destruction did not mention Climate Change, versus segments that did. So thank you for doing this. Im very appreciate that msnbc does cover it in this way. Im proud to work at a america that prioritizes this. David, in two weeks, a Debut Album featuring artists like elton john, meg the Stallion And Doja cat. Theres a lack of men on the album, pointing out no black men are on the album. He said, maybe a lot of men dont want to work with me. He may have a point. A lot of people work with frank ocean. Hes worked with everybody from kanye to apas. Do people not want to work with lilnas or Something else . I want to celebrate, first, that Lamar Hill is a marketing genius. What i read him say recently is hes celebrating in a space where he has less regard for what people say about his career and appreciating the ability to own his power. We have to deal with homophobia. Its not Something specific to the black community. It exists in the world. Whats important is that, again, Lil Nas is celebrating his power. I hope thAt There are other entertainers who step up to the plate and it will benefit them. Its interesting that you started with our brother, frank ocean. I think that a lot of people hoped that he would have the career that Lil Nas is having At This moment. When it became explicit that ocean was singing about being year or by sexual, there are a lot of people that decided not to mess with him and we have to deal with that in the black Community And Community more specifically. Queen bee is turning 40. So i just want to get in one question before we go because, as beyonce turns 40, kanye released his album. Kanye has long been canceled for me, but a lot of young people are like, i like the album, its great. He had Kim Kardashian On Stage with him at his debut concert. But he invited Donald Trump to join him. One, what a weird oh. Two, Donald Trump is So thirsty for attention. Why didnt he show up . Thats a great question. I have no idea what Trump World is thinking on that score. But i can tell you whAt That means for kanye and the Fan Base that he has left, because i will say, just like yourself, a lot of younger people and especially women and black women understand what kanye has done to the community and his own brand over the years and i think the juxtaposition is really interesting to me. I agree with david, lil Nas X is a genius. He speaks truth to power in a way we havent seen in a long time. Kanye west 16 years ago this week is when he said George Bush doesnt care about black people, and 16 years later hes inviting a white supremacist, former president who was impeached twice to be On Stage with him. Its an unfortunate evolution for his career. I agree. Im glad to focus on younger people like lil Nas X. And ive got to play kanye now, because were way over time. They love their wealth. You played yourself, playboy. Thank you, you guys are a great panel on this beyonce birthday. Coming up, millions are lose their Unemployment Benefits on this side of all weekend, labor day. All right, this weekend 7. 5 million people who are out of work will lose their financial lifeline as enhanced federal Unemployment Benefits are set to expire. Now, 26 states have already cut off that relief, but after doing that, only one out of eight workers in those states was able to find a job. And while August Unemployment rate dropped slightly, only 235,000 jobs were added last month, and this fell way short of economists estimates. So with covid still impacting the economy, the loss of jobless benefits is an Ankle Weight for folks already drowning, especially for people who Cant Work because of Child Care or health concerns. This is alSo happening when the Eviction Moratorium has expired. Joining me, former secretary of housing and urban development, Julio Castro and Congresswoman Congressman from california. People have no idea how theyre going to pay their rent or where theyre going to sleep and the disenfranchised people of this country are being bled by 1,000 cuts. You were the former head of hud. Whats the impact of seeing millions of people become homeless . The impact is misery for millions of families across the united states, and every state in our union people of different backgrounds and these red states and in Some blue states as well, although many of those states may have a bigger Social Safety Net commitment. But what you have is millions of people who dont know where theyre going to be sleeping in two weeks, in a month, two months. And we know that housing is one of the most stabilizing forces in Somebodys life. If you have a safe, decent, affordable place to live, you are more likely to be able to get a decent education if youre a kid, to focus on your academic work, youre more likely to get a job because you have that stability. Your health is going to be better. So you have that. And then you have 7. 5 million people falling off of this unemployment insurance cliff. Thats the biggest number of people that weve seen on record. At the same time, you have the delta variant, the coronavirus, surging in many states right now. Hospitalizations surging. So its this maelstrom of misery that is being created. A maelstrom of misery is probably one of the only things we can use to describe this, congressman. Youre a former classroom teacher, you signed onto this letter advising biden to focus on Hunger Right here in the country, which sadly is about to be a bigger issue, and you just introduced a bill for a 32work workweek. Given all the confluence of all the challenges happening, youve got benefits running out, the e Eviction Moratorium is going. What is congress going to do about this . How is the federal government going to provide a Safety Net to people . It does not seem like its been a huge priority for anyone in congress, quite frankly. Tiffany, im really glad youre raising the issues that youve raised. The less than stellar Unemployment Numbers that came out on friday, the persistent and rising Covid19 Threat through the delta variant. All of these things, i think, are things that should change the expectations of congress and the american people. What led Some to trim back unemployment, we actually had Unemployment Benefits extended through the rest of the year and at 600 a week, the thinking was, then, among Some, to trim it back. But i think that is, At This point, i think a mistake thAt They need to revisit. ThAt Thinking was based on expectations that were being, i think, bred by the optimism of the vaccine. We now see the Vaccine Hesitancy around the country, even resistance to it, the replication of the virus because of the stall in terms of numbers of people getting the vaccine. All of this has led to i think as we go through the reconciliation process, we need to rethink Some of the thinking that went into trimming back these benefits. Yeah, i agree. You know, i have to say, it felt like a slap in the face when Treasury Secretary Janet yellen said its appropriate to cut this off. Its not like shes heartless, but shes punting this back to the states. Weve already seen the states are not compassionate here. The states have already cut off. Ill kick it back to you, secretary castro, look, i think a lot of folks are watching to say, how are you going to help me tomorrow . Right now im facing having no income and no place to live. Im curious if youre in touch with the current hud secretary, marcia fudge, whAt Those conversations are like, and if you could offer her a piece of advice to immediately address this crisis, what would it be . Well, i know that Secretary Fudge is abSolutely committed to making sure that every single perSon in this country has a safe, decent, affordable place to live. And hud is doing a lot of work throughout the country to try to make thAt The case. Of course, reSources are always the issue. We have millions and millions of people out there who are living in a rental affordability crisis, and the fact thAt This Eviction Moratorium is lapsing is going to make that worse, by one estimate about 3. 5 million people over the next couple of years could lose their homes, including several hundred thousand this year. Other estimates put that even higher. And So i know that i have confidence that Secretary Fudge is doing what she can in providing leadership at hud. What i would say is we need to pass this Reconciliation Package because this Reconciliation Package actually has over 300 Billion of investment for affordable housing, which is the largest investment that we will have seen in decades. Yeah, and, you know, i think a lot of people think if you cut peoples benefits off, that will force people to return to work. But the data just hasnt beared that out. If you cut people off At The knees and think thats going to make them walk, the three of us on this screen know thats not accurate. Let me just say, thats such an important point. Because when i talk to folks out there, i go to places and talk to folks at restaurants or Sometimes Business Owners or others, and they wonder, they say, well, is it these Unemployment Benefits that are in effect that are encouraging people basically to not look for a job, thAt Thats why were having trouble bringing people in . And research has shown thats not the case. That is not the case. Thats not the case at all. It makes sense to support people. Yeah, abSolutely. All right, im So Sorry, we are way over time. Ill just have to have you back. You have to free up your saturday So you can come back. Im really Sorry we have to run. Thank you So much. I appreciate you making time to be here. Is this lawsuit going to be able to pass or is it really more of a symbolic gesture to call attention to the issue . I think theres two sides to this. One, theyre certainly calling attention to the issue, and its mindboggling. Ive been here 20 years covering the violence In Mexico. It often reassembles conflicts with human catastrophe, more than 300,000 dead over the last decade, mass graves. This spreads to central america and its fueling many of the refugees coming to the united states. It ties many issues together. And i have seen more coverage on this firearms issue, its mindboggling, ive seen more coverage over the last month than i have in the last 20 years. So it does raise attention to the issue at a time thAt The biden administration is looking at issues of firearms. On the other side, if you look at many of the big issues in the united states, tobacco and big pharma, its often in the courts rather than in politics, thAt These issues are changed. And even in the united states you find the protection of the commerce is not bulletproof. Youve actually seen families of Some of the victims of Sandy Hook suing remington, who built the gun used in thAt Tragedy and theyre making progress in that case. So this could have a combined effect and create changes in the firearms industry. You know, its interesting here because there are a lot of americans that have this weird Love Affair with guns. The Washington Post did this incredibly disgusting Tonedeaf Piece on the Nra And Dana and they described her dark eyes and jaw line. Youve actually interviewed or spoken with Some of the u. S. Gun manufacturers. Im curious, what is their response to the damage theyre causing In Mexico . Sure, So the last four years ive been following, for many years following the trafficking In Mexico and talking to traffickers there and in the last four years really getting into the firearms industry. I find one thing is very common among people in the gun industry, its sealing their own corner. I talked to one perSon and i said are you concerned if the guns that you send end up in the hands of murderers . He said its not my problem if im doing this legally, im selling it to a shop that sells it legally, whats my problem . I said if youre not concerned, how about ethically are you concerned, and he thought and said no. So ive talked to people all over the industry, to people in the malitias themselves and really about american gun culture, which is like nowhere else in the world. But i think this issue can be most american gun owners, most conservatives actually believe in having Some kind of sensible regulation of guns, but the fringe are really defining this debate. Yeah, and, first of all, its baffling but not surprising, i suppose, thAt The Gun Manufacturer was not concerned ethically and certainly they arent concerned morally. The u. S. Is not exempt from this. There are mass shootings and violence that happens here. Whats the difference between the Gun Violence that happens here and how its handled versus what happens in Latin America, particularly In Mexico . Sure. I actually did Some research for this in baltimore, maryland and you see a very similar trafficking techniques, ways the guns are acquired in states like virginia, georgia and how theyre trafficked to baltimore, maryland and how theyre trafficked to mexico. The difference is with the violence in baltimore or in places like chicago and other cities, it tends to affect neighborhoods or Some towns, where In Mexico and Latin America you see an entire state with this level of violence. Then you see In Mexico the majority of Firearms Deaths in the u. S. In many cities are actually with handguns, you see In Mexico squads of 50 people with ak47s, grenade launchers, which theyre actually acquiring in the united states. AlSo theres the issue of the mass shootings themselves, including the one in So'>El PaSo and how they kind of relate. And i think theres a common theme there. The violence is senseless and people have lost their Loved Ones to this violence, they feel this senseless loss of life. This is Something that should not be happening right now. Its definitely Something that should not be happening. Thank you So much, youll have to come back as the lawsuit takes action. Thank you So much. Dont go anywhere at home. Enrollment has plummeted since the start of the pandemic with 727,000 fewer undergrads taking classes this spring compared to last spring. Now, according to the national Student Clearinghouse Search center, its driven by Dropout At Community Colleges and College Students who came from low income, high poverty and high minority High Schools are dropping out at disproportionate rates. Now that a new semester is beginning, what does this mean for those Left Behind . Joining me is the Vice President of higher education At The Education Trust and a senior at howard university. I know all you hu people are happy to see her in her hu gear. Thank you both being here. Doctor, i want to start with you. You bring such great context. What is the impact of having students delay their plans or the impact of being having an adverse impact on their life when it comes to covid and getting an education . I mean, i think realistically we know that students, especially low income students and students of Color Arent taking a gap year. Theyre simply not enrolling in education. We know good jobs, jobs that were created post the last recession went to people with College Degrees and those were jobs that had retirement benefits and medical benefits. So it has longterm impacts if you dont go to college and earn a degree. Completely, and i think were seeing that. So i learned about you, my good friend dr. Kim jones is the Department Chair at howard and she spoke So highly of you and your circumstance. Now, you are working fulltime, youre 26 years old, undergrad and youre So close to graduating. But youre balancing a fulltime job and being a fulltime student. Tell me whAt Thats like for you. Its pretty crazy, honestly. Every day i wake up at like 5 00 a. M. , i get ready for work. I come to work in the morning. I leave work, i go to class. I come back to work. I leave work again, i go to class. I come back to work and stay at work until 6 00 p. M. , just pretty much to complete my responsibilities. Its a long day. AbSolutely. Its constant. And i think a lot of people look At This and they say i know i got this advice, ask your parents for money. Not everybody has that circumstance. Your mother works fulltime. Tell me about your family circumstance. So my mom is a single parent, So even just like entering college, she wasnt able to, like, help me apply for loans or anything for school. And you look At The bill and youre like, whoa, what am i going to do with that . Ive never even seen that much money in my life. And now i have to pay Something that costs that much. So pretty much its just my mom. She works fulltime. She has a really good job, but just because she has a good job and makes decent money doesnt mean that she can afford to help out in any way when it comes to school. So ive been working since my freshman year. And its very impressive and i should say youre studying s. T. E. M. , youre in the engineering department, Something where theres a delta for black women. So we want to make sure that you stay in school and graduate. Doctor, i know these circumstances are not unique to you. You see this kind of thing all the time, particularly with black and brown students. What do you think . Do colleges and universities bear any responsibility to make it easier for students . Where does the Solution-lie'>Solution Lie . I think there are lots of Solutions that address the issues. We have to be realistic, College Isnt affordable in this Country And Part of the reaSon is the racial wealth gap. We leave students of color with no margin for error. The average white House Hold in this country has 156,000 worth of wealth, compared to 3,800 for a black household and 7,000 for latino households. Thats why students have to work fulltime to afford college. So if we want to address this, there are policy Solutions we could turn to. We should create a federal State Partnership to ensure that students can go to College Debtfree and we need to invest in Student Completion and support. Students get to college and then a small thing, a very small thing like an illness in the family, they get derailed and cant complete. We need to be investing in emergency grants and students to help them get over the finish line. And you make a good point, for public High Schools where more than 50 of the students are black or latino, the decline is nearly four times that of High Schools where the majority of students are white. Were out of time, but im just So curious, for those of us not engineers, we may not know all the terminology. Tell me what it is that you want to do when you graduate. I know youre going to graduate and do Something amazing. Right now im currently working for gc and when i graduate i want to continue working for that gc in the hopes of pursuing my pe. After that, i just feel like the world is my oyster, So i definitely want to do a number of things. But definitely stay in the civil field and just kind of explore different avenues. AbSolutely. Thats the place to start. I love that and i love that you know At This point in life the world is, indeed, your oyster. Thank you So much. I appreciate you guys being here for that conversation. Now the national museum for africanamerican History And Culture has officially launched the smithSonian Hip Hop and rap. This is a nine Cd Project thAt Traces the evolution of the genre as a force in american and world culture. Joining me is the man who helped curate this time capsule. Im So excited to talk to you about this. When my producers emailed this to me, i was like, im So into it, lets do it. I love the box set. Its such a comprehensive piece of work. Im So curious how you could take a genre as huge as this and condense it to this nine cd set. How did you do that . I have to say that i did not do this by myself. There was a team of advisers that helped everyone from Quest Love, chuck d, mc light, and obviously that was spearheaded by dr. Lonnie bunch, who now is the secretary of the smithSonian institute worldwide. It was a huge team effort. I was thrilled to see my friend, my buddy Quest Love be a part of this. Shout out to him for doing that. Something that i find interesting, obviously we cover politics here, as well as culture. Hip hop has always been such an integral part of the culture, but alSo very political. And i remember growing up, you know, Uncle Luke to live crew, nba, ice tea. These people really got republicans, you know, really in their feelings. Now its the same thing with, like, Cardi B and other people they just hone in on. Why do you think that Hip Hop is the thing that republicans use to focus on and turn Something ugly into Something thats So beautiful and meaningful to us . Well, ideally i think that Hip Hop hits a nerve with everybody, regardless of your demographic. I just think its one of those art forms that just, you know, covers all spectrums, and its obviously really a powerful medium. I remember when Hip Hop first came out and Everyone Kind of dismissed it as a fad. It was like disco, this is going to be a thing. And then it penetrated other outlets. I would come home from school and then it became prevalent in the Fashion Industry and then it started touching every single industry. It certainly was never a fad. Why do you think that its reSonated not just here in america, but across the globe . Its a culture, its a movement. Its Something thats here forever, really. Well, again, Hip Hop is Youth Culture and So when one group ages out, theres another group thats born into it. My Son, for example, is 36 years old. He was born into Hip Hop in 1984. Everything that hes seen in his lifetime can be reflected in Hip Hop. Thats very interesting, because you dont think about it from the younger Sons-perspective'>PerSons Perspective because theyve only grown up with Hip Hop. I made to Sound like an old curmudgeon, but i do want to ask i love your career history. You were a Graffiti Artist and transformed it into a beautiful career as a creative founder for def jam. I listen to a lot of condition temporary Hip Hop, i call Some of it mumble rap. I hate to Sound like my mom, you dont know good music. What is your thought since you were part of the one that launched . I love lil Nas X is pushing boundaries i never thought i would see in my lifetime in Hip Hop. To me, Something like that is really special. I agree. Lil Nas X is definitely one of the artists out there doing amazing work and certainly showing how, you know, Hip Hop can touch different genres. He touched Country Music and has done interesting duets. I encourage everyone to check it out. Just thank you So much cey adams for pulling together this work. I was looking for folks like outcast and all the Southern folks who helped change the game. So i appreciate you being inclusive in this body of work. Thanks for joining us today.
