President biden left a marker for history today, he delivered the most accurate and most honest speech by an american president About Afghanistan. The bar could not be lower for honest and accurate president ial speeches on afghanistan, especially considering the woefully inarticulate president ial speech that started the war in afghanistan, with george w. Bush making promises that were filled with absurdity by the time his presidency came to an end. In fact, by the time his first term ended. Promises such as, we will win this conflict by the Patient Accumulation of successes, we will not fail. Peace and freedom will prevail. To deliver the best president ial speech in history About Afghanistan, all the president needed to do was be honest about what our record in afghanistan actually shows. No president before Joe Biden chose to go with honesty as the Organizing Principle of a speech on afghanistan. It was time to be honest with the american people again. We no longer had a clear purpose in an open ended mission in afghanistan. After 20 years of war in afghanistan, i refused to send another generation of americas Sons And Daughters to fight a war that should have ended long ago. After more than two trillion dollars spent in afghanistan, the costs that Brown University estimated would be over 300 Million a day for 20 years. For two decades. Yes, the american people should hear this. 300 Million a day for two decades. Weve never seen this before. Weve never seen an american president preside over The End of a lost war and then Stand Up and tell america what went wrong in that war. And why our evacuation from that war was at times chaotic and always dangerous. This happened before. But the president didnt say a word then. The last american helicopter left vietnam at The End of a much more chaotic evacuation than We Saw in afghanistan. And the republican President Of The United States, gerald ford, said nothing. He did not give a speech about it and did not answer Press Questions. He was not attacked by his political opponents for the chaos of the evacuation from vietnam because no one expected a massive evacuation from a war that we lost, we 20 times more casualties than we suffered in afghanistan, to be anything but chaotic and dangerous. A week before the final american helicopter left vietnam, President Ford gave a speech in New Orleans at two lane university, in which he did not in which he actually did talk about american humiliation in war. But he was talking about the war of 1812. Seriously. We as a nation have suffered humiliation and a measure of defeat in the war of 1812. Our national capital in washington had been captured and burned. So the illustrious victory in the battle of New Orleans was a powerful restorative to our national pride. In that speech, at tulane, President Ford talked about economic issues, he urged medical students listening to find a cure for cancer. And he said next to nothing about vietnam. He mentioned the word vietnam. Exactly once. Today, america can regain the sense of pride that existed before vietnam. But it cannot be achieved by refighting finished as far as [applause] as i see it, the time has come to look forward to an agenda for the future, to unify, to bind up the nations wounds and to restore its health. And its optimistic self confidence. So thats what he said. When the evacuation was still going on in vietnam. Here is some of the chaos that happened, just in the two days before President Ford gave that speech, while 7000 people a day were not being flown out of the vietnamese airbase. The president resigned from office, and on the way out the president of vietnam who gave a two Hour Speech attacking the united states. Henry kissinger said that he believed the resignation of President Theiu would lead to a negotiation with North Vietnam that would save saigon, from a. President ford mentioned none of that chaos in his speech at two lane. Days after the president resigned. The third president that week, president yin but the airbase was bombed by North Vietnamese pilots. Rocket attacks on the airport followed in which pilots were killed, the last two americans killed, and their bodies were left behind at a hospital my mistake. President born forward did not say one word about those deaths. Because the americans could not use the airport anymore, they switch to a very dangerous evacuation using helicopters, using buildings that could not bear the weight of the helicopters, so the helicopters had to hover as the people climbed aboard, without being checked and without Finding Out what they had done during the war. I mentioned vietnam tonight, as i have been since the start of the evacuation, because it is the only model that we have for an evacuation for a war that we lost. And every day of the evacuation of vietnam was either chaos at every level. The President Of The United States did not believe there was a thing he could do or say to reduce the chaos. Secretary of state Henry Kissinger was involved in the chaos himself, actually believing that getting rid of one president in favor of another may actually help. The military did their best, trying to do something they had never done before. They conducted a major evacuation from the war that we lost while they were being shot at. While the evacuation was over, kissinger said in response to a Press Question that he had No Idea how many americans were left in vietnam. He had No Idea how many of vietnamese were left behind. That was the Secretary Of State official answer, No Idea. Joe biden was a senator in 1975, watching all of this, and when we evacuated from vietnam he clearly remembers that evacuation. Because today he said this. The Bottom Line is, there is no evacuation from The End of a war that you can run without the kinds and complexities, challenges and threats that we face. Today President Biden said we have to learn from our mistakes. But we never do. We made all of the mistakes of a Vietnam And Afghanistan and we will probably make them again somewhere, because too many people in the american media and political office still believe that the american military can do the impossible. They still believe that the american military can be the first military in the History Of The World to evacuate from a war that we have lost and do it in an organized an honorable way. And they believe that there were easy alternatives to President Bidens evacuation from afghanistan. Since march, we reached out 19 times to americans in afghanistan, with multiple warnings and offers to help them leave afghanistan, as far back as march. Now some say, you should have started mass evacuations sooner. And couldnt this have been done in a more orderly manner . I respectfully disagree. And that jim, if we had begun evacuations in june or july, bringing thousands of american troops and evacuating more than 120,000 people in the middle of a civil war. They are still would have been a rush to the airport, a breakdown in Confidence And Control of the government, and it still would have been very difficult and dangerous as a mission. To those asking for a third decade of war in afghanistan, i ask, what is the vital national interest . Remember why we went to afghanistan in the first place . Because we were attacked by Osama Bin Laden and alqaeda on september 11th, 2001. And they were based in afghanistan. We delivered justice to Bin Laden on may second 2011. Over a decade ago. Alqaeda was decimated. We succeeded and what we set out to do in afghanistan over a decade ago. Then we stayed for another decade. It was time to end this war. When i hear that we could have, should have continued the socalled low Grade Effort in afghanistan, at low risk to service members, at low cost, i dont think enough people understand how much we have asked of the 1 of this country who put that uniform on. There is nothing low grade or low risk or low cost about any war. It is time to end the war in afghanistan. War in afghanistan. And once again President Biden said something that President Ford never said about vietnam. I take responsibility for the decision. We head off our discussion tonight, Captain Dan Berschinski he is a Senior Fellow at the eisenhower media network. Also with us, eugene robinson, columnist for the Washington Post and msnbc political analyst. Dan, you are a veteran of this war that is now officially over in terms of american involvement. What was your reaction to what the president had to say . I appreciated the president taking responsibility and i thought, particularly stating, the reasons why we needed to and in this forever war. And the reasons why this evacuation, this inevitable conclusion, has been the right thing to do, despite the difficulty. He spoke the truth to the american people that three previous administrations refused to do. Dan, let me zero in on a tactical point, given your experience in the country. That is, the department saying that if we had started this earlier, if we had decided to do a massive Beer Lift bare lift, there would have been an overwhelming surge of people trying to get out, as soon as that first move towards a major evacuation occurred. Do you agree with that . Yeah. I think honestly thats a better question for a diplomat, someone who had spent years working with the afghan government. But as We Saw, the government failed, the army laid down their weapons, the citizens had no faith in the government that we propped up for years. And i think if we had done this before, we would have seen the same rushed to the airport, and then hopefully we would have had the taliban cooperating. But instead of doing it for two weeks it would have been two months or three months or four months. And it would have been incredible risk. As risky as this operation was, it would have been worse, had we stayed for longer to prolong the withdrawal. I think the president is absolutely right. Jeanne robinson, i am not one very often giving one reviews of speeches, because i dont invest in them very much. I dont consider it much of an art form. Im more concerned with what politicians do. But today i indulged in, on twitter, and said it is the smartest and most on a speech About Afghanistan ever given by an american president. I got a usual amount of ridicule that i always get with any tweet. Here is why they didnt get, i didnt get anyone submitting a another speech by another american president that they thought was more honest or smarter than this one. That is because there is none, lawrence. Your perspective is correct. I think President Biden will sleep soundly tonight. Having done something he is really advocated doing for at least a decade. He has recognized that we did not have any longer a vital strategic national interest in afghanistan. And that this war, if the generals and hawks were given their head, would have [inaudible]. And just on the previous point you were discussing, it was the afghan Government President ashraf ghani, who asked President Biden not to begin evacuating earlier. Because it would create a panic. My Washington Post colleague, david ignatius, had a great column on this. On the best alternative for president ghani, what it was for the exits. And then he took off, leaving afghanistan rudderless. And creating the final bit of a vacuum. But i thought it was absolutely an honest speech. I think it was realistic, i think a lot of people were saying, well, we might have done this, we should have done this, whatever. I think they are living in a Fantasy Land where, as you pointed out, the rules of war, gracefully, and in an orderly fashion. That simply does not happen. My reference on that is all of human history. Yes. Its a pretty big reference. Lets hear some more about what the president said today about learning from our mistakes. As we turn the page on the Foreign Policy that has guided our nation the last two decades, we have got to learn from our mistakes. To me there are two that are permanent. Pertinent. We must set missions with clear, achievable goals, not ones we will never reach. And second, we will stay clearly focused on the fundamental national security interests of the united states. Dan, you heard that surge of applause in the video i played of President Ford in New Orleans, speaking to a basically republican audience, about getting out of vietnam. There was universal point of agreement that we needed to get out of vietnam. I also felt that we had learned the lessons but Joe Biden said we had to learn today, that the mistakes would not be repeated, and now that i have seen them repeated i have no confidence we will learn the lessons this time. Unfortunately i have to agree with you. In 2017, general john nicholson, the 17th Commander of our war in afghanistan, testified before congress and described the war as quote, a stalemate. Just last year, the chairman of the joint chiefs, mark milley, also testified before congress and said to congress, we have made a, quote, modicum of success. We have a entire generation of general officers in the military who have presided over a fatal war. At minimum they failed to adequately advise the senior leadership that this war was unwinnable and an achievable by any means. And at worst they failed to do the job that they were assigned to, to win the nations wars. And if our general officers who were steeped in military History And Strategy cannot Identify A quagmire when we are in the middle of it, i do not have any faith in the rest of america, unfortunately. And now politico reports that according to a source, Jim Jordan had at least two Phone Calls with President Trump on January 6th and the Phone Call included matt gates. After he was asked by politico, Jim Jordan says he definitely spoke to the president that day. I dont recall. I know it was more than once. I just dont recall the times. He later added, that im sure one of the trump involve calls took place in the Safe Room because we were in that room forever. According to cnn. Com, jim Jordan And Matt gates are among at least 11 republican congress people under scrutiny by the committee on January 6th. It was corrected requested that the House Panel keep records of the congressman and the trump family, who played some role in the insurrection. It is reported that other records have been requested from Madison Cawthorn and Marjorie Taylor Greene another congressman. Tonight a statement was issued saying that if the Telecommunications Companies comply with the request, quote, a republican majority will not forget and will stand with americans to hold them fully counted will under the law. Tonight the committee responded to that with a written statement saying that the committee is investigating the violent attack on the Capital And Attempt to overturn the results of last years election. Weve asked companies not to destroy records that may help answer questions for the american people. The Committees Efforts wont be deterred by those who want to whitewash or cover up the events of January 6th or obstruct the investigation. Joining our discussion now Neil Katyal and John Heilemann, wow lets begin with you neil. What is going on here illegally . The companies get a request to preserve information that we know they preserve anyway. What is going on here legally . Well, i think whats going on here, i think i have one question for Kevin Mccarthy, which is why are you so scared congressman . Because nobody thinks that it is preposterous and he can try to fight the statements in court but he is going to lose. It is true that the law recognizes Attorney Kueng Client privilege. But it does not recognize a legislator conspirator privilege. And this is a really dangerous threat because Kevin Mccarthy cannot tell you what laws are being violated. And then he is threatening retaliation against third parties, these companies, like Social Media Companies and phone companies. What is he threatening for . Just nearly complying with the subpoena. A lawful cabana subpoena. And going out and threatening someone who complies with a subpoena, it just shows that this party has lost any pretense of being an Law And Order party. This is an antidemocracy party at this point. So, John Heilemann we have at least one Campaign Agenda Item for the republicans in the congressional election. And that is elect us, so we can pass laws, i guess, to penalize Telecommunications Companies that cooperate with federal investigations. I think thats right. Thats one, thing lawrence. There is also this is like a lot of mccarthy threats, a threat that seems to be directed not just at the companies but also those issuing a threat they are issuing a threat in a more veiled way to the democrats pressing for these phone records. This is like another one of these threats where republicans are saying, we may be back in the majority soon, you guys should probably be careful what you do here because if you leave this in our bed that we will leave a Horses Head in your bed. It is mob behavior, not the behavior of people who care about the law or getting to the bottom of what happened on January 6th, which is why this is all about. The truth is that mccarthy is not on the list right now. A lot of people want to know what Kevin Mccarthy did on January 6th and the communications he had with President Trump. He is not one of the congressman currently listed. That is one of the things going on, he wants to keep his name off this list. And have the democrats running the committee know, that he is going to rain down on their heads if they drag him into this. I think that gets back to the top, what is Kevin Mccarthy so scared of . If he did nothing wrong, he should not be afraid to have people look at his own records. One Record Reason why he may not be on the list so far, is that the conversations are still a matter of Public Record already, and he has described those conversations already to other people who could be called as witnesses, to say what he said about those conversations. Exactly and that puts him in a different position from Jim Jordan, who kind of disassembled about his January 6th conversations. And today suggests that there were many conversations between Jordan And Trump on January 6th. That itself shows importance. What else to these guys have to do besides cause an insurrection . Meanwhile, matt gates, also a subject of the report, he had these conversations with trump. I think hes just excited to be in the headlines for something else other than a sex trafficking investigation. But if these conversations look like they happened, congress is absolutely right to preserve the records. You Cant Trust these people trying to block them. Thats why they have done this. Its a by the Book Thing to do in this investigation and its zero that is unlawful about it. All we are going to get here in The End is a record of a Phone Call having app and. We arent going to get the contents of the Phone Call. We are not going to get the word they said. It is going to be up to Jim Jordan to say or not say what was said on that Phone Call. And the chances of that being accurate are exactly zero. Thats right. And i wanted to say so far that this committee has done everything that they have done, playing hardball. The and thats what we have to do, if we want to get at the bottom of January 6th, we want Jim Jordan to have to testify. Because as neil has suggested, he has already lied. He is already acknowledge that he lied previously about the Phone Call about the number of Phone Calls. We know that Jim Jordan has been he is a Person Of Interest in this investigation. Four things we know he said ended. For his involvement in the stop the steal protest. And the fact that we all know Jim Jordan got that Medal Of Honor before trump left office. We all wonder what that is about to. So i think these guys all need to be held up before this committee, they all need to testify under oath. They need to be subpoenaed if they wont come in. So far i am encouraged by the Committees Toughness but i think there is no way we will get to the bottom of what happened unless all these folks have to testify under oath. And under threat of punishment if they refused to testify. And we have to try to force them to testify as much as we can. I know we are both so skeptical but its the possibility of getting to the truth. We need their testimony. So, neal, these members of congress are subpoenaed to testify on the committee, which is the only way that they show up to testify, they will presume we fight that in court how much time will there be enough that . Way thats the old tactic, they can try to stall and delay, but i think this is a long investigation, in the reasons to move quickly. One i think the commission, the committee has done everything right, but its taken a while. We are eight months after January 6th, and we dont have answers to a lot of basic questions in theres a narrative being formed now by the republican party, that january six with no big deal and i cant imagine a more dangerous, Big Lie than that this was a massive threat to our democracy, in everything we stand for, and we need to know what happened, why it happened, in whos behind. It looks like a close call on whether Gavin Newsom will be recalled. Lawrence i would say if you look at the public polls i think theyve opened up a Little Bit for newsom, in conversations i had with their campaign they feel like its opened up a Little Bit. Almost 55 of the people who returned ballots are democrats. Which is a good number. And its still too long weeks to go. And everybody in california, has been mailed about. So you are worried about turnout, in any non president ial election, i think that helps a Little Bit. But the question really is Alexei Newsom has opened up a Little Bit, Big Survey had him up 51 or 53. Thats, not a lot of comfort, and so are questioning that the people are still undecided. Will they all Go One way or another, or theyre not going to. Vote but i think the campaign has done a very good job, of defining this as a choice. You know, no incumbent, wanted to be solely a referendum on their performance. You want to turn it into a choice. And i think theyve done a very good job of swinging it around into the role. As the most hardly governor, if the recall is successful, and i think thats really successful, lirio makes donald Trump Look responsible. But the problem is, the democratic party is officially telling voters, advocating to voters, just vote no on the recall, and then mail in your ballot, and do not pick another name. Which strikes me as a possibly disastrous mistake. Because there are people on there who are worse than other people on there. And so a lot of smart democrats, have been told them last few weeks, that they were going to vote no one recall, and then for the candidate, they were going to pick kevin faulconer, who they expected to do better, as the least crazy republican, of the former mayor of san diego. But Hes Polling at 3 tonight. Larry elder is at 23 . The next guy down is at 13. And so, if there is a recall, Larry Elder is the governor, and that is thanks to a democratic strategy to make sure there was no recognizable deck of democratic name, on the ballot. In case the recall winds. Thats a great question. Lawrence perhaps its a risky strategy, its a strategy i agree with. Maybe im in a minority of people you talked. Let me simplify. First of all, this recall, im not a fan of recalls generally are specifically, this is been recognize in a way we have not seen before. Gavin newsom is up for reelection next year, so if you dont like the performance, to make the case against him, i think you want to simplify this. You want to dignify, this and if you simplify, this just vote no, just for no, i think youll gain some points that way, i understand theres some risk and that and everybody talks about holding back with gray airs about 20 years ago, when there was a democratic governor on the ballot, there is a view that was a mistake, you cant win, elections but i agree with the strategy, maybe ill come to regret those words and two weeks. But i think you want to simplify, this you want to say no, and i think thats support for the recall, and i think its dropped, and i think Larry Elder has been really magnified, as the trump that he would be. Lot to do, with Dino Turnout based on reports is now you like to.
