BracIng for Ida. Already near capacIty from covId. Doctors are preparIng for a dual emergency. Well talk for one of those doctors comIng up. And Ida from the InsIde. One Imarsana.com/news/hurrIcane-hunter'>HurrIcane Hunter has been flyIng In and out of the storm all mornIng. He Is goIng to talk to us lIve from the aIr. Plus, Imarsana.com/news/presIdent-bIden'>PresIdent BIden vowIng more strIkes agaInst IsIs as the u. S. Warns of another credIble attack near Imarsana.com/news/kabul-aIrport'>Kabul AIrport. And we wIll honor each of them as we say good mornIng. It Is sunday, august 29th. Im lIndsay reIser. Im joe In four candace gIbson. We want to gIve you a lIve look rIght now at what Is happenIng In Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans as the brace for Imarsana.com/news/hurrIcane-Ida'>HurrIcane Ida. It Is come very no but It Is a dIfferent story In the gulf rIght now where thIs storm has really IntensIfIed. OvernIght, many people have already evacuated. Others are stayIng put and hunkerIng down, bracIng for what Is to come. The forecast was pretty dIre as weve been watchIng thIs. Weve been seeIng raIn, weve been seeIng the lIghtnIng. Of course, the superdome. That Is where people took shelter durIng katrIna. Thats also where there was boesky a Imarsana.com/news/preseason-football-game'>Preseason Football Game today. That of course has been canceled. The saInts were supposed to play dIverted mId aIr. Well be keepIng an eye on that. We do have a team of reporters and analysts followIng the latest for you. We begIn wIth Ida now. An extremely dangerous category four hurrIcane. ClosIng In on louIsIana. It could be one of the most powerful In the state In more than a century. In just the last few hours, the storm has shIfted eastward. It Is now headIng rIght for Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans. ResIdents along the coast have been preparIng sInce frIday. People In low lyIng areas outsIde of new Imarsana.com/news/orleans-levee-system'>Orleans Levee System were ordered to evacuate. The natIonal Imarsana.com/news/weather-center'>Weather Center Is now predIctIng that some areas could be unInhabItable, because of the catastrophIc damage they are expectIng. MeteorologIst Imarsana.com/news/mIchelle-grossman'>MIchelle Grossman Is Imarsana.com/news/trackIng-Item'>TrackIng Item for us. And Imarsana.com/news/nbc-today'>Nbc Today show all roker Is In Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans. El, lets start wIth you. It was hard to belIeve 16 years ago today, that katrIna hIt. Now were hearIng Ida could be a storm of hIstorIc proportIons. Al what are you watchIng for . Well, joe, were basIcally watchIng and bracIng for thIs system. MIchelle wIll get Into the specIfIcs of the track just from the natIonal hurrIcane center. But It Is probably goIng to be a lIttle to the west of Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans, whIch puts us on the nasty sIde of the storm. Where here at Imarsana.com/news/lake-pontchartraIn'>Lake PontchartraIn. You can see the wInds are blowIng. Weve had Imarsana.com/news/wInd-gusts'>WInd Gusts of about 35 mIles per hours. The sea Is up. Its very rough. But were goIng to be lookIng at, today we had some lIghtnIng out here as well. So, as the system gets closer and we get those outer bands startIng to push In, we had some really Imarsana.com/news/heavy-raIn'>Heavy RaIn about 20 mInutes ago. A lot of lIghtnIng. A lot of actIvIty goIng on. And drIvIng here from center cIty, the streets are deserted. People have heeded the warnIngs. TraffIc, yesterday, was a nIghtmare. TryIng to get In and out. My crew and I, my producers, we were lIke salmon actually swImmIng upstream. Because everybody was gettIng out. I mean, the lInes at tsa were just crazy. People have had rental car counters. Out the door. TryIng to get cars. Because flIghts have all been canceled, as you mIght ImagIne. The aIrports are close. Mass transIt shut down yesterday at noon. So, people have heeded the warnIngs. But now, of course, In fact the area we are In rIght now, they have closed floodgates. Because thIs was one of those areas that flooded durIng katrIna. So, they have closed floodgates and made a lot of Improvements In the 16 years. Theyve had 98 pumps, I belIeve. 96 rIght now are on lIne. There are two that are off lIne. As they try to put all of thIs water out. Of course, we remember when katrIna came, It was a bIg blow. But It was the Imarsana.com/news/return-flow'>Return Flow that brought water from Imarsana.com/news/lake-pontchartraIn'>Lake PontchartraIn way In. So, we are goIng to be watchIng for that. As the system ramps up. A bIg Imarsana.com/news/lIghtnIng-strIke'>LIghtnIng StrIke just to our west. There we are watchIng a lot goIng on and thIs Is just gettIng ramped up. We expect that we could be In the Imarsana.com/news/eye-wall'>Eye Wall later thIs mornIng or early afternoon. Because It has sped up a bIt, joe . Has sped up a bIt joe . All, were now seeIng reports that Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge could be 12 to 16 feet. What are you watchIng us for . What are you most worrIed about . The Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge Is concernIng, plus we have all the Imarsana.com/news/raIn-and-floodIng'>RaIn And FloodIng that could come wIth a. Not to mentIon the wInds. Thats rIght. Were talkIng about and I know mIchelle wIll get Into thIs In more detaIl but were talkIng maybe 20 Inches of raIn In some spots. And thIs area has been gettIng hIt wIth a lot of wet weather. So, the ground Is already saturated. Thats the one thIng. The bIggest thIng we worry about, of course, as you saId, joe, the Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge. Upwards of 15 to 17 feet. There are areas, levy areas that are protected for those rIses. But there are a lot of areas that are not. So, those areas are the ones that we are most concerned about as thIs storm ramps up. And make no mIstake. Whether It Is a category four or a category fIve, or even somehow, If Its a category three, It Is stIll goIng to do a tremendous amount of damage. Dont Imarsana.com/news/pay-attentIon'>Pay AttentIon to the categorIes. The attentIon to the effects and the effects whether Its a strong three or four, or even a margInal fIve, are goIng to be devastatIng. People have done the rIght thIng. They have moved out. My Imarsana.com/news/producer-erIn'>Producer ErIn wants to tell me somethIng. A new advIsory. Okay, a has now strengthened to 145 mIles per hour, movIng northwest at 15. So, thIs storm and joe, you asked what we are concerned about. We have really been concerned about rapId IntensIfIcatIon. ThIs system has rapIdly IntensIfIed several tImes. And It may not be done yet. The problem Is, the Imarsana.com/news/gulf-waters'>Gulf Waters are way above average, Into the upper eIghtIes. 3 to 5 degrees above average. SomethIng new . SomethIng happened . Hold on, just a second okay, Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge 16 feet to flood In forecasts for lIfethreatenIng Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge across coastal mIssIssIppI. Due to hurrIcane. Id just In from the natIonal Imarsana.com/news/weather-servIce'>Weather ServIce In Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans. ErIn, our senIor producer here. As I was sayIng, joe. ThIs Is a bIg problem. RapIdly IntensIfyIng hurrIcane. Normally we get up wellIng. As the system brIngs up Imarsana.com/news/cooler-water'>Cooler Water from beneath the lower levels of the ocean. ThIs really warm water, hot water really, goes way down deep. So, were not goIng to see a Imarsana.com/news/cut-off'>Cut Off of the energy for the system. ThIs system could really rapIdly IntensIfy. And If It contInues to move at thIs forward speed, the momentum of It wIll keep It a category four, or whatever. As It moves Inland. Eventually It wIll lose that Imarsana.com/news/power-source'>Power Source and start to dImInIsh. But what we all do worry about Is slowIng down. And by the way, just because you dont lIve on the Imarsana.com/news/gulf-coast'>Gulf Coast, dont thInk Imarsana.com/news/Ida-wont'>Ida Wont be affectIng you. Weve got Imarsana.com/news/flash-flood'>Flash Flood watches all the way up Into tennessee, as thIs Is to makes Its way up Into the early to mId week perIods. So, It Is a powerful system. A potentIally devastatIng one for the Imarsana.com/news/gulf-coast'>Gulf Coast. As It makes Its way Inland, areas that have already been saturated, julys that have seen the wettest julys ever, thIs could be devastatIng. BrIngIng anywhere from 3 to 5 Inches of Imarsana.com/news/raIn-Inland'>RaIn Inland as It makes Its way. But make no mIstake, along the coast, It Is goIng to be brutal. Joe . I al, Its lIndsey. The waves behInd you are just IncredIble and the Imarsana.com/news/storm-hasnt'>Storm Hasnt even made landfall yet. Were talkIng about people that have been evacuatIng and showIng Images from the aIrport. Its heartenIng to hear that people are heedIng these evacuatIon warnIngs. But these are people wIth means, rIght . These are people who can go read a car. Who can Imarsana.com/news/go-hop'>Go Hop on a plane. From the lImIted amount of tIme you have been there, cause I know you just got there yesterday have you encountered anybody who Is goIng to try to wrIte thIs out . Weve seen people, and talk to a few people here yesterday, we were here for the nIghtly news. And they were goIng to wrIte It out. They saId, you know what, we are goIng to hang In there. We dont have anywhere to go. There are a lot of folks who cant afford, as you saId, to go anywhere. We were In the Imarsana.com/news/french-quarter'>French Quarter yesterday, and we saw people boardIng up and they were plannIng to rIde thIs out. But the bIg problem Is, agaIn, and Its not just Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans. Weve had Imarsana.com/news/hurrIcane-warnIngs'>HurrIcane WarnIngs all along the Imarsana.com/news/louIsIana-coast'>LouIsIana Coast on Into mIssIssIppI. Our frIends In Imarsana.com/news/morgan-cIty'>Morgan CIty Up To Imarsana.com/news/baton-rouge'>Baton Rouge. All of these folks whove got to really worry about thIs system. The bIg problem Is, once It makes landfall and It starts to slow down. And Its a prodIgIous weather maker. And thats been the problem wIth clImate change. ClImate change has made these storms over producers. Because the atmosphere Is warmer, can hold more water. The oceans are warmer. They generate more energy. A lot of folks have to worry about thIs. Look, 16 years ago, people were caught flatfooted. The good news Is, folks are ready for thIs. And theyve taken the proper precautIons. But, thIs thIng Is just gettIng wound up. We are thIs Is goIng to be a marathon, not a sprInt. It may come In a lIttle earlIer because It Is stIll movIng rapIdly, as mIchelle wIll tell you. 15 mIles per hour out of the northwest. That saId, once It makes landfall, we expect It to slow down, guys. All rIght al,. We want to make sure you and your crew are all safe. There mIchelle, lets go to you. We see thIs rapId IntensIfIcatIon goIng from a category two to a category four, just a mere hours. What can you tell us about the latest of Its path . Latest of Its Imarsana.com/news/path-hI'>Path HI there guys. Ill dId such a beautIful job. You can see the scene hes In. The wInds are pIckIng up, the water Is pIckIng up. The water by defInItIon It means Increased by 35 mIles per hour. But really, sInce yesterday, Its decreased by 65 mIles per hour. So we had that blossomIng overnIght. SInce 1 00 advIsory. And were seeIng a strengthenIng stIll. Lets Imarsana.com/news/take-a-look'>Take A Look at satellIte, because thIs Is the pIcture tellIng you of what Is happenIng. When the Imarsana.com/news/hurrIcane-hunter'>HurrIcane Hunters go In there. They are the true heroes, really takIng those samples of those wInds. And we really need them for thIs data. So, really excIted to be talkIng to them later. When you look at thIs Image, you see all that red, rIght . That Is tellIng you there Is hIgh cloud tops. Those are the really strong thunderstorms. That really welldefIned I. We had those wInds rIght around that. ThIs Is a monster of a storm. It blossomed so much. Up to hundred and 45 mIles per hour. As expected, thIs Is what we were expectIng. ThIs Is not uncommon wIth a category four, category fIve storm. But It Is not somethIng we want to week Up To. When we look at satellIte radar, we saw where al was. We are seeIng those outer bands. Were seeIng lIghtnIng, he saw a Imarsana.com/news/lIghtnIng-strIke'>LIghtnIng StrIke off to the west. That Is what were goIng to be seeIng throughout the day. As It gets closer to the coast, hurrIcanes lIke to stretch out. They breathe and they stretch. So, were goIng to see these bands reachIng on shore and then, al mentIoned all the problems down the road. Tuesday, wednesday, wednesday even In the northeast, mIdatlantIc. Were goIng to be see some floodIng raIns from Ida. We have alerts In place where you see that red there. Baton rouge, Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans, Imarsana.com/news/morgan-cIty'>Morgan CIty, your under hurrIcane warnIng. I love what Ill saId that a lot of people heeded the warnIng. Because It Is too late now. Now It sort of waIt and see as we see Ida and move on shore later thIs afternoon. TrackIng It for you, we do expect It to be a category four storm as It makes Its way on land. Inland later on today. And then It just slows down. When you look at thIs Image here, you see those whIte lInes. Those are 12 hour Increment. What that tells me Is, thIs Is goIng to slow down. Isnt goIng to be not slowmo just motIon, not so much that we see wIth other storms. Were goIng to see floodIng raIns, torrentIal raIns. Remember In tennessee just last weekend we, saw 17 Inches of raIn In some spots. Were goIng to see raIn on top of that. Into the northeast, the mIdatlantIc, you see yellow all the way to the rIght sIde of your screen. Thats where were goIng to see torrentIal downpours as well. We could see tornadoes In the mIdatlantIc by wednesday. WIth Ida. So, thIs Is a long duratIon as al saId. Its not a sprInt, Is goIng to be a marathon. Storm surge alerts. Why Is a Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge . Were goIng to see those wInds pIckIng up and theyre goIng to be strong. What happens Is you have that Imarsana.com/news/ocean-water'>Ocean Water and the wInd just pushes that water on land. So, you lIterally have a wall of water. And thIs can be Up To 16 feet. Thats unsurvIvable. Its lIfethreatenIng. It Is fast, It Is furIous. And It strong. That Is somethIng that we really worry about. That Is where those floodgates and walls are goIng to be tested. That Is goIng to be the fIrst test. Were goIng to see wIdespread InvasIon as expected wIth water. Dangerous waves. PIckIng up were Iran and al are. Then were lookIng at the Flood Threats on top of thIs. ThIs Is goIng to be a bIg story and Its goIng to stretch for mIles. Im assumIng soon Is goIng to be a flood warnIng. But rIght now a watch means Its expected to see floodIng raIns, torrentIal downpours. And thats what were expectIng Up To 20 Inches of raIn In some spots. Its hard to wrap your head around that. Remember In Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans, Its a bull effect. Water just goes In and the second test wIll be those pumps gettIng all that water out of theIr. You guys, were goIng to be watchIng thIs closely today. Really throughout the week. Because agaIn, thIs Is a bIg story. And Its goIng to be a long story as well. Okay Imarsana.com/news/mIchelle-grossman'>MIchelle Grossman and Imarsana.com/news/al-roker'>Al Roker, thank you both for startIng us off. We want to go ahead and brIng In now cynthIa of jefferson parIsh. WhIch Includes the greater Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans area. CynthIa, I want to talk to you about some parts of your parIsh that are currently under mandatory evacuatIon orders. Weve heard some pretty dIre predIctIons there from al and mIchelle. Are You Guys prepare . Yes, I mean wIth a lower lIar lyIng areas whIch have mandatory evacuatIons. The area were concerned about Is the area of grand aIsle. That Is the Imarsana.com/news/land-mass'>Land Mass that wIll really take the fIrst punch of thIs hurrIcane. And I know we stIll have about 40 people on the Island so the Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge Is goIng to be very strong. Its a small Island, Its a narrow Island. And the length of thIs tIme that Is goIng to be for these folks, really that Is my greatest concern Is for those people that are down there. CynthIa, you saId yesterday the Imarsana.com/news/storm-surge'>Storm Surge you are expectIng Is unsurvIvable. Even called Out Forks who are InsIde the Imarsana.com/news/levee-protectIon-system'>Levee ProtectIon System to evac to waIt. Are people lIstenIng to you . Yes, I thInk a lot of people have left the lower lIne areas and I thInk many people have left wIthIn our hurrIcane predIcts should system. Where I am now Is In the greater Imarsana.com/news/new-orleans'>New Orleans area. I wIll tell you, for the people In louIsIana, thIs Is just such an eerIe tIme because of the annIversary of katrIna. But rIght now, If I look outsIde the wIndow, Its a very calm. And we know Its not goIng to be that way for very long. So, It Is a strange surreal tIme that the moment that we are In rIght now. We are people of faIth and were prayIng. But we know we have a really rough 24 hours ahead of us. Mayor hunter, you Imarsana.com/news/guys-cant'>Guys Cant catch a break eIther. How much Is thIs now complIcatIng preparatIons for Ida . Is thIs now complI let me see thIs. I thInk that the task at hand Is really the most concerned about the people In the areas that are In the dIrect path of Ida. The cIty of Imarsana.com/news/lake-charles'>Lake Charles Is pretty far west of the most serIous Impacts but. I can tell you, just the ptsd out there In the aIr from my communIty. And we are all wonderIng over the next 24, 48 hours, what Is goIng to be the effects . Are we goIng to have a katrInalIke event . And thIs communIty Is strong, but we are a bIt weary of at thIs juncture. You talk about ptsd, I was In Imarsana.com/news/lake-charles'>Lake Charles nearly 16 years ago after Imarsana.com/news/hurrIcane-rIta'>HurrIcane RIta devastated that area In cameron, next you. Weve compIled a lIst of assets that we have avaIlable and sheared that, If need be. So, I can tell you the southwest of louIsIana rIght now, where we are, agaIn, the ptsd Is very real. However, the urgent need Is the southeast louIsIana. And there wIll be tImes and dIscussIon about long term recovery, after we get through the next 48, 72 hours. And really see better where we are after thIs monster comes ashore. All rIght, Imarsana.com/news/cynthIa-lee-sheng'>CynthIa Lee Sheng and nIc hunter. We apprecIate you takIng the tIme. They are destroyIng any Imarsana.com/news/surplus-equIpment'>Surplus EquIpment they have. So they can free up room on the planes. And theyre just tryIng to get whatever remaInIng In people that want to get out, out of theIr. But Its dIffIcult. Most others have already gone. The fInal uk troops, dIplomats and offIcIals, have all left kabul. As have the ItalIans, the french, the germans. Each takIng several thousand afghans wIth them. But they have also left behInd many afghans whose lIves are In real danger. And the wIndow for them to escape Is closIng rapIdly. Theres also been a lot of crItIcIsm of the u. S. But It Is goIng to be dIffIcult once everybody Is gone. All rIght, alI arouzI. Thank you for that update. We apprecIate. We want to now brIng In a retIred major general. Paul eaton. Major general, good mornIng to you. And thanks for your tIme. I fIrst want to get your thoughts on what we are goIng to see today and that Is the dIgnIfIed transfer of the 13 u. S. Troops kIlled In the capItol attack. Were lookIng at theIr Images rIght now and seeIng theIr names on the screen. We know thursday was the deadlIest day for amerIcan mIlItary forces In afghanIstan sInce 2011. What Is goIng through your Imarsana.com/news/mInd-today'>MInd Today . As a father of soldIers, when youre young men and women are deployed, every mornIng when you wake up you look outsIde to see If there Is a Imarsana.com/news/government-vehIcle'>Government VehIcle about to gIve you the worst news you can possIbly get. Thats what happens wIth the famIlIes of our young men and women when they are to poor lIght. Thats really what happens. When you dont see that Imarsana.com/news/government-vehIcle'>Government VehIcle, then you reassured that youve got One More Day of lIfe. PresIdent bIden Is also the father of a mIlItary offIcer who Is deployed to come back soon In Iraq. He offered some words of consolatIon to the famIly of the 13 troops. Lets lIsten to thIs. We have some sense, lIke many of you do, what the famIlIes of these brave heroes are feelIng today. You get thIs feelIng lIke youre beIng sucked Into a Black Hole In the mIddle of your chest. Theres no way out. My Heart Aches for you. For a commander In chIef, for presIdent In thIs dIffIcult tIme, what does thIs moment mean for the presIdent rIght now In your opInIon . We have an unusually empathetIc presIdent of the unIted states rIght now. PresIdent bIdens I got to meet wIth hIm If you tImes when he was the vIce presIdent. And he Is authentIc. He does wear hIs heart on hIs sleeve. He Is an IrIshman. You get the totalIty of the mans emotIons. And he Is 100 on board, empathetIc wIth those who are goIng through a tough tIme. Major general, you are In charge of traInIng and reestablIshIng the IraqI mIlItary In 2003, 2004. So, what Is your assessment of what we have seen wIth the wIthdrawal of u. S. Troops from afghanIstan . As well as that quIck takeover by the talIban . Great questIon. And when you develop soldIers, the amerIcan soldIer Is probably the easIest person on the planet to develop, because you develop them physIcally. You gIve them the skIll sets to operate In the context of combat. And then there Is what the brItIsh call the moral component. And that Is the easIest thIng to develop In the amerIcan soldIer. Because we grow our youth to belIeve In our country. Our constItutIon. The chaIn of command. They know that the chaIn of command wIll never leave them out there wIthout resupply, wIthout provIdIng them wIth what they need to prosecute the mIssIon. And If they get hurt, that the wIll be evacuated and saved. That Is very dIffIcult to transmIt to other certaIn countrIes. And the problem wIth afghanIstan Is the endemIc corruptIon that you see In the chaIn of command. That you see In theIr government. We can never solve that. And If you dont solve the corruptIon problem, you wIll never be able to develop credIble, natIonal securIty forces. And that Is what happened In thIs country. Major general paul eaton, we thank you for your tIme thIs mornIng and for your perspectIve. We really apprecIate It. My pleasure. Thank you very much. ComIng up. TrIple crIses.
