Children in the school district. They simply showed up they say to make their voices heard. That was nbcs Dasha Burns Th Reporting from williamson county, tennessee. Well, it is the top of the hour and good to be with you tonight. Were watching two evacuations this evening. Hurricane ida is approaching land from the gulf and many coastal residents are leaving the coast. Meanwhile the dangerous Evacuation Effort continues overseas In Kabul. Th its a race against time to evacuate all american personnel before the deadline to leave afghanistan. Plus the Pfizer Vaccine now has full fda approval, so why are some americans choosing to selfmedicate with a drug used on horses . At and despite living through so turmoil and uncertainty, a new poll shows Todays Youth are still optimistic about The Future. Well discuss this and more with our Saturday Night panel. From nbc News World Headquarters in new york, im Joshua Johnson. Welcome to the week. This has been an emotional somewhat unrelenting week of news. First we were dealing the ongoing tragedy in afghanistan. That is bringing afghan refugees evacuating to americas shores. Meanwhile folks on the Gulf Coast are evacuating from our shores ahead of Hurricane Ida. Forecasters expect this storm to make Landfall Tomorrow as Eithet A Powerful Category 3 or marginal category 4 hurricane. Now, The Storm already hit cuba. Strong winds and Ocean Currents devastated the western part of that island. Meanwhile Today President biden took part in a briefing at the White House. Fema officials briefed him on us the Storms Track and its strength. The timing of ida is also triggering some painful o memories. Ng based on the forecast, it will make landfall on the 16th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Ar that storm killed more than 1,800 people and destroyed Hundreds Of Thousands of homes in and around New Orleans. Time is running out for evacuations as louisiana prepares for The Storm. Some highways have been packed w for much of the day with thousands of people fleeing the coast. And then theres that dangerous evacuation overseas In Kabul. Three days remain before president Bidens Deadline for withdrawing american personnel from afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of afghans may still be trying to leave the country. No doubt they know the window is closing to get out via the u. S. Airlift. This morning the roads remained closed outside Kabuls Airport. We had seen large crowds trying to push inside the facility. N those crowds have largely dispersed after Thursdays Suicide Bombing and last nighto drone strike. A statement from President Biden warns that more strikes will come. Commanders have apparently informed him that an attack is,h quote, highly likely in the next 24 to 36 hours. And the president has directed them to do what they must to protect themselves. But the troops have begun withdrawing or retrograde as Thr Military calls it. C Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby confirmed that today. Have u. S. Troops begun Nf Retrograde withdrawal from an airport . We have begun retrograding. Can you say anything about the number left . No, i cannot. Its been a breathtaking week of developments at home and abroad. Lets catch our breath while we can. With our Saturday Night Panel Catherine Lucey is a reporter for the wall street germ. Wa Alonzo Bodden is a Comedian And Host of The Radio Show Alonzo Bodden whos paying attention. Good to see the three of you. And before we dive in, i just wanted to get into a quick development out of kabul regarding the threat on the ground. We have just received a release from the u. S. Embassy in afghanistan that says all u. S. Citizens in the vicinity of the airport including the South Gate should leave the Airport Area immediately. There is concern as we understand it about a credible threat aimed at the airport and that all people should leave the area of the airport immediately due to a credible threat. This comes from the u. S. Embassy in afghanistan. We know what happened earlier this week, and we know that theh State Department and u. S. Officials have been asking rt people to stay away by degrees. First it was stay away unless you have a specific way to get here and stay away unless you have specific instructions to come. Fi and then the instructions became dont come to the airport, and now the instruction is back off from the airport because theres a credible threat. Well keep an eye on that and le update you on that as we get more information. But catherine, let me begin with you and the Meta Fact of all er this. This is just one more chapter in a week long story of all the things the biden administration is dealing with right now. He thats right, joshua. I mean this has been the most challenging week of his presidency. Youve seen the harrowing images of people stuck in afghanistan trying to get americans, afghan allies out of there. Obviously the explosions, the attacks on thursday and the retaliation, this has been a very difficult moment for the president. And theyre continuing. As you say even as they try and pack up troops and equipment for the deadline, theyll continue to try to get people out of there in the final hours. Think about the broader context here. This crisis in afghanistan unfolded as the president was already dealing with rising covid cases, increased anxiety about hospitalizations, those cases rising, the return to school for students amid the Pandemic. Or and now you now have this Yo Hurricane bearing down. You mentioned at the top of the show we should try and take Ouro Breath and think about the week. The president certainly is not d catching his breath. I think we know hes at the h white House Tonight getting updates on the hurricane and afghanistan, and that theyre trying to get through this Ta Situation and maybe evacuations in both locations. But these are very challenging situations with lots of moving s parts. And there was a lot of specificity in his Statement E Today where he said he expected another attack and that u. S. Er retaliation, you know, will occur if necessary, that its not over. So i think youre hearing a lot from him theres more to come here. He anthony alonzo, Id Love to get your Gut Checks on this week particularly because as i understand it the three of us ar have something in common. Anthony, i understand your brother is a marine Helicopter Pilot and one of your best a friends is also a marine Corp Veteran of iraq. Let me just start with you, i anthony. And then ill come to alonzo. How are you and they processingi all of this . I prefer to only speak for hi myself, but i can say that from talking to a wide variety of Bu Military Veterans and military veterans families that its a difficult emotional week as youf might imagine. Nearly 20 years after the 9 11 attack that sparked the Quoteunquote War on terror that afghanistan was the primary venue, to see 20 years coming to Full Circle in this way where americans are now being told to leave the airport that they probably risked life and limb to get to get out of the country, its disheartening. I wouldnt want to say that, you know, ive heard from veterans or veterans families any one particular political complaint. There are people who are, you know, sympathetic to President Biden, that theres no other way that this could have been done, that, you know, any way we pull out of afghanistan was going to be ugly and messy and potentially deadly. And there are others who think that, hey, President Biden is in charge. And if this is a mess then the mess should stop you know, the buck should stop with him. Alonzo, what about you . I understand youve got army, navy, marines in your family. O, your father was a Merchant Marine. You performed with the uso. I wonder where your head is at at at the end of this week. My Family Members were my Family Member were in the military but that was quite a while ago so fortunately theyre out and theyre safe. My dad was a Merchant Marine in World War ii, and World War ii the big difference was the entire country was onboard. You know, what i would love to see here is lets just support the effort to get people out of afghanistan and then do the political finger pointing after its all done. Right now i mean those Marines Were Americans first, american marines. And the army and soldiers theyre all lets Take Care of that and then worry about who were going to blame, who would have done a better job because afghanistan has always been a mess. It was a mess you know, when the russians attacked afghanistan in the 80s and they pulled out it was the same thing. They were there for ten years and it was a mess. It is a closed country. They have tribal rule. Theres a bunch of things going on we dont understand. And right now the airport is an obvious target. So so we have to figure out how to get people there and get them out safely. But Id Love to see us do it together. As far as entertaining the troops, i havent been to afghanistan. I went to iraq a few times, and it was an impossible job. It is in a place of terrain, of culture, of climate that is p completely different, couldnt be more different than the united states and what were used to. So what theyre dealing with and what theyre doing, its tougher than anything you can imagine until you actually see it. U lets get them out lets Take Care of it and then get into the politics later because i believt had this happened under trump il would have been a mess. Ap it doesnt matter. Ve its a tough situation. Its a war. Youre trying to get out of a country that you dont know. Lets Take Care of that first. Speaking of getting people out i should, by the way, just U Update you on the latest numbers we have from the White House ou from today, about 2,000 people were evacuated from kabul, the result of 11 u. S. Military flights, c17s, those huge Military Cargo Planes which carry approximately 1,400 evacuees. There were seven Coalition Flights that carried 600 people. And so far in the last two weeks the total evacuation has been approximately 113,500 people just in the last few weeks. About 119,000 overall. But, again, the u. S. Embassy is Warning Americans to not come to the airport, to stay away from the airport because of what it describes as a specific as a specific credible threat. Alonzo, ill come back to you ic one second, but i do want to ged to the evacuation from Hurricane Ida. Nbcs Morgan Chesky spoke to somebody in lake charles, louisiana, whos already dealt i with four storms before this. Heres part of what they told morgan. Weve been through rita, an Hurricane Ike and then laura and delta. Reporter after losing her home to Hurricane Laura a year ago she and her family now callu this trailer home. Everyone praying Ida Steers clear. Catherine, this feels like one of those moments where the president s going to have to be really good in his consoler in Chief Role with everything going on. Yeah, i mean this is obviously that is one of the parts of being president is being able to offer comfort to people during the times of distress. And youve seen that already with President Biden, with covid. And then this past week with these military losses. You know, you saw him really directly address the families of the fallen soldiers on thursday. A white House Official i talked to this week talked about how losing troops very personal for the president because hes a military father. And part of the reason they wanted to get out of there they feel its to protect the troops by exiting this conflict. As you see the Situation Unfoldg within New Orleans youre seeing the president already engaging, got the Briefing Today you mentioned earlier. And certainly i think weve seen it before and well see it again offer Comfort And Support as this unfolds as president s do in these tough moments. Catherine lucey of the walli street journal, i appreciate you helping us start off tonight. Anthony Alonzo Stick around. Well talk to you later in the hour. Al but Coming Up, the Pfizer Vaccine now has full fda approval. What impact will that Have On Americans who are still hesitanc to get their shots . Plus Teen Popstar Olivia rodrigo has a point, god its brutal out here especially for a teenagers themselves. So why do nearly all of them express optimism about adulthood . Our panel will be back to discuss that. L but first Dara Brown is here with the headlines. Hey there, joshua. Thank you. The stories were watching this hour. Forecasters say Hurricane Ida is rapidly intensifying. Its expected to hit the northern Gulf Coast sunday morning. Ida could bring life threatening storm surge, catastrophic wind damage. Today we saw the impacts on cuba. Strong winds and currents devastated the western part of the island. Trees were downed, Agriculture Areas were flooded and electric grids were damaged. Ahead of Ida Making Landfall in the u. S. Fema shipped supplies d to louisiana. Were also seeing heavy traffic as residents head inland. And long ts alines at airports. Earlier the mayor of New Orleans urged residents to evacuate voluntarily. The city says Emergency Workers wont be able to Reach Residenty during The Storm. The Security Situation around Kabuls Airport remains tense tonight including with a warning from the u. S. Embassy, Warning Americans to get away from the airport. Not just dont show up unless you have a way to get in. Now theyre saying that a specific credible threat in various parts of the Airport Property including near a Gas Station on the northwest side of the Airport Warrants Americans getting away from the Airport Area as quickly as possible and avoiding traveling to the airport and staying away from all the gates at this time. We are approaching that Tuesday Deadline for the americans to remove themselves from afghanistan, to end their presence In Kabul. And the situation of trying to get everyone out who wants to get out remains tense. We dont have anymore more details on the nature of this threat. We just know that the u. S. Embassy In Kabul is urging americans to stay away from the airport at this time. Well see what more we can dig up and keep you uptodate. Covid Vaccination Rates have been rising again. Yesterday the u. S. Had its highest oneday total since july. So far this month more than 12 Million americans have received their first doses. But that comes as rates of infections and hospitalizations are also rising across the country. Vaccines are a revolutionary line of defense against this increasingly deadly virus. This week the fda granted full approval to the Pfizer Vaccine. It previously had Emergency Use Authorization. Still vetted but under a quicker process. So will full approval convince more americans to get their shots . Check out this recent poll by the kaiser family foundation. 3 in 10 unvaccinated adults said they would be more likely to get a vaccine if it was fda approved. Joining us now is dr. Irwin redlener, the Founding Director for the national center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University and an msnbc public health analyst. Dr. Redlener, can you start explaining what the difference is between approval and Emergency Use Authorization . Is it basically the same project but one just takes more time, or is there more to it than that . Theres a little more to it than that, joshua. But the deal is that Emergency Use Authorization is really designed to to respond in a serious public health crisis, so without waiting for the full approval. On the other hand its a thorough vetting of Safety And Efficacy issues which go onto the vaccine. With the full approval we have a much longer period of evaluatiOn And looking for safety questions. And secondly, we have Hundreds Of Thousands of Data Points that will get analyzed. So when the full approval does come, which came for pfizer we have an even more state of reassurance the vaccine is safe and effective. How much do you think it will effect Vaccination Rates . I mean i question whether or not this is going to be the thing that makes people go, okay, ill finally get vaccinated or whether the Goal Posts will just move again to something else. Well, they might but let me break it down this way, joshua. So what is happening is that we have that as you cited that survey that said about a third of people said they would who are not getting vaccinated yet said once we got full Approval Theyd get the vaccine and hopefully that would be true. Then the other thing that would happen as well is that full approval means many companies and organizations and events would say, okay, now we have full approval were going to mandate vaccines. If you want to come to the workplace, come to this event, you must show proof of vaccination. I think thats one of the things well desperately need. What it wont do im afraid, joshua, is help the people who are hard core into the Craziness On Social Media and the internet which has provided the conspiracists among us a lot of fuel to say the vaccine is dangerous which is preposterous. They believe things like someone could implant a microchip in my body, if i get vaccinated ill become magnetic and On And on. Those people who are vaccine hesitant are going to be harder to convince of course. If you are among those who believe youre at risk of being microchipped, i hate to inform you but youre carrying a microchip in your pocket. Can i ask you about the other vaccines, the Johnson Johnson and moderna . Whats the pathway for them . I presume theyre also on the same kind of path for full approval especially now were having this conversation about booster shots. Yeah, well, moderna is basically finished, almost finished with submitting the data the fda needs. And i expect theyll be fully approved as well. And in a month or so. J j is behind a bit and is probably going to be another couple of months. Everything is on track to get all three Eua Vaccine approved products onboard for full approval in the next few months. And then we have to of course wait for other approvals for lets say the Boost Shot or for getting children under the age of 12 vaccinated. All this is coming and hopefully if were lucky all those approves will be in pocket by the end of this year, josh. And very briefly before i have to let you go were watching Hurricane Ida as it makes its way toward the Gulf Coast. I understand you ran a clinic after Hurricane Katrina on the ground in the Gulf Coast. And i wonder what your biggest concerns are now ahead of the hurricane before we go. Yeah, well, actually my program at columbia and the Childrens Health Front brought in five Mobile Health Clinics into the area. And i think the big problem then of course was the failing of the levees that allowed the lake to spill over and flood many, many communities especially low income communities in New Orleans. Hopefully the levees that were upgraded after katrina will hold tight and we wont get that kind of flooding, but were expecting a category 4 landfall from Hurricane Ida, which is actually even stronger than what happened with katrina. So hopefully people are prepared. The levees will hold and well get as many people evacuated safely as we possibly can. Lets hope so. Dr. Irwin redlener, good to see you, sir. You heard dr. Redlener mentioning some of the Internet Craziness going around. We mentioned Pfizers Vaccine now has full fda approval. Well, that is not stopping a few people from seeking Covid Treatments at their veterinary supply store. The latest Internet Hoax impeding the fight against the Pandemic when we come back. Remember hydroxychlorquine . The antimalarian drug made the rounds online last year an unproven remedy for covid19. Former President Trump promoted mabing it popular with some of his supporters. Well, now theres a new Hoax Cure gaining some traction online, a drug primarily used to deworm animals. Its called ivermectin. It helps treat some parasitic infections in humans but can be toxic in high doses. Anecdotally some folks online said it caused them shall we say gastrointestinal distress. So whys this getting attention now . An nbc News Investigation found an active online community talking it up particularly on facebook. Users traded Dosing Directions and purchasing advice. Some point people to a protrump telemedicine website. Those facebook groups are made of Tens Of Thousands of members. Just another example how pervasive Covid Misinformation is online. Insider Columnist Anthony Fisher and comedian Alonzo Bodden are back with us. Joining our panel now, since this is your area of expertise im going to start with you. I know according to our reporting to avoid detection some users have started referring to this in slightly coded language, not referring to it as ivermectin but calling it a Mood Juice and asking how much their horse weighs when providing information on dosages. What . What . What . Its super dangerous. This is a way people are skirting platform rules and regulations around Covid Misinformation. And we know there is a safe and effective vaccine. So the good news here is that platforms are pretty good at catching onto language used to sort of skirt these rules. I just did a report not on ivermectin but another silly trend where people are crawling up Milk Crates and falling down. The milk crate challenge. The milk crate challenge, you got it. Theres a lot on the internet right now. Thats like a full Retirement Program for orthopedic surgeons all over the country. Its really insane. And people are breaking their bones, which is why platforms are banning any mention of the milk crate challenge. But theyre also banning any variation of that term. So platforms are good at kind of rooting out these like Mood Juice, how much does your horse weigh, some of these terminologies that may or may not be referring to ivermectin. It is going to make people sick. Anthony, you have a new piece in which you take on what you describe as americas conspiracy culture. Commonly people attack the media for putting forward bad information, but you write they avoid putting blame on what you call the most influential source of bad information in american life, donald trump. Elaborate on that. So in that column i was referring to two twitter threads that had gone viral in recent weeks that were shared around very widely. Tucker carlson read one of threads in its entirely in a 7minute Segment on his show. So these were influential threads, and the thesis of these threads was essentially you cant blame the people who believe trumps Big Lie about voter fraud. And you cant blame the people who are vaccine hesitant because the media sometimes gets it wrong. The media got the Jesse Smollett Story wrong and for that reasOn And those reasons and perhaps sensationalistic coverage of trumps dealings with russia, these twitter threads basically posited that the culture of whatever these people of the Maga Mindset might believe, youve got to kind of give them the benefit of the doubt that there might be some truth to it because the quoteunquote corporate media, the Mainstream Media has gotten a few things wrong. And in the column i spoke about how particularly with the antivax movement there had been people that have been giving undo credence to ivermectin as a plausible prophylactic cure of covid19. And the thing is just like in these twitter threads theres a lot of Buzz Phrases that are supposed to be evidence but really theyre just innuendo. Its not really relevant ivermectin was associated the Nobel Prize because that Nobel Prize had to do with animals not people. And just because there is a dose small enough too be used safely for humans that doesnt mean theres any evidence whatsoever, Peer Reviewed Data that ivermectin is an effective covid treatment. Yeah. And by the way not all of us Got The Covington Catholic story wrong. I actually watched the video of what happened. So if youre mad because the news got it wrong maybe you just need to upgrade your news. Take that with you. I dont really know where to go with this. On the one hand i feel like we have to reach a point where facts have to matter and grown ups have to be accountable for grown up things like truth and logic. On the other Hand Internet Misinformation and disinformation is so powerfully pervasive were not used to fighting back against this as a culture. So i view this with some scorn, i wont lie, but also with a lot of compassion for people who are still kind of learning how to navigate Social Media and how to tell fact from fiction. And that compassion, joshua, makes you a better man than me. The toughest thing here as a comedian the toughest thing in the world is Coming Up with jokes funnier than reality. If i went on stage and told you we have a worldwide Pandemic but people are going to cure it by taking Horse Parasite Killer youd laugh. Youd be no, really . If i told you Bill Gates is trying to track you let me tell you something, joshua, if a man with a 100 Billion is looking for me im going to be very easy to find. Im going to be at his house saying i understand you have 100 billiOn And im here. I dont understand these people who believe all these ridiculous theories and reject science, but i will tell you this the moment they get sick, science works. Suddenly theyre like hi, doc, i need to get in right away, i need icu, a ventilator. Youre better than me. Youre compassionate for them. To me its like yeah you should probably get some of that horse medicine. Were going to work on people who are trying to stay well who got sick. It really is unfair to Health Care workers, and its a shame that people who legitimately get sick cant get treatment or whatever because people willingly choose to believe the most ridiculous and i dont know. I dont know what argument you make. I dont know how to beat this. Again, as a comedian any of these things if i made them up the audience would laugh. And if i told you last year when we were all lock down oh, yeah were going to have a vaccine but people arent going to take it because itll make you magnetic last august wed be like, okay, ill be magnetic, just let me out of the house. Give me a wooden Door Handle so i can go out to a restaurant. Exactly. So theres no battling this kind of thing. I dont understand it. You can make me magnetic, ill never lose my phone. Put it right there and ill never lose track of it. Before we have to pause very briefly i know reddit rejected a plea from some moderators of a Provaccine Form to combat misinformation on the site. So it seems the argument what to do about this is still very much alive briefly before we pause. Absolutely. But its not really a debate or at least it shouldnt be. We have facts and then we have opinion, and there are facts this vaccine works and theres opinion that it doesnt. And the opinions dont seem to matter when theres concrete hard Core Evidence vaccines are safe and effective. Weve seen a lot of platforms that are really putting in a lot of effort to ensure people have the facts about covid19, and i dont think theres any excuse to not follow that lead. Everybody, stick around. I know this is a rather discouraging story, but were going to turn around Coming Up. How do young people view The Future compared to past generations . In a new the Washington Post ipsos poll about half of american teenagers say now is a bad time to be growing up. Thats up 20 points from 16 years ago. But how do they feel about their futures . Thankfully very differently. 9 in 10 said they are very or fairly likely to achieve a good standard of living as an adult. And nearly half believe their opportunities to succeed are actually better than their parents were. So whats behind this optimism . Our panel is back to discuss, and i wonder if i might start with you. I wonder what your sense is of why todays young people report being so optimistic especially in light of the fact were talking about they are educating than ever, young people are as correct as ever. The generation that they attribute to polluting the earth, to ruining their educatiOn And Health Care systems. I think a lot of them realize that they are the leaders of The Future and that they will have the ability to right the wrongs that they see in their country and in their world. Things like Climate Change which are really, really important to them. And i think they see a brighter Future Today in the drivers seat. Alonzo, the flip side of that is yall will be dead soOn And then we get the keys. Like thats not a vote of endorsement. Thats a hit on you. Like i dont know that that i would feel good about that. No, im fine with that. Listen, i am at the Tail End like last of the boomers or whatever. And if theyre waiting for us to go so they can take over, good for them. Weve made a mess. Listen, ive had a good run, josh. Im okay. Ive had a good run. They are more intelligent, more connected. Theyre more aware. They have fewer Hang Ups with things like race and sexual orientation. So although were leaving them a mess i think they are equipped to deal with it. Also theyve been beaten up already. Theyve gone through a recession, a Pandemic, the horrific racism. And all this stuff theyre like, okay, its going to get better. Yeah, it will. It will. We need to get out of the way and let ive met and seen some brilliant young people. I look forward to them taking over. Let them run things and let them bring in new idea. Im all for it. I wish them the best of luck. Im looking at cal, and cal youre going to enjoy it. Have fun. Have fun. Thank you. Ive got a few good years left. Im going to ride it out, yeah, and then you guys cleanup. I wish you the best. Well, i got a few more good years, too. So im not quite ready to cut off the lights so im going to do my best while im here. I hear what theyre saying in terms of the way young people view their sense of maybe agency is the right word to be able to influence the problems of today compared to say when i was Coming Up in the 80s and we have a very different experience lets say expressing ourselves through Hip Hop Music about whats happening in the world where the expression possibly protest might have been as far as it went. But todays young people have those tools at their disposal and many others. So i can understand why being young today might feel more empowering. Well, as a young generation xer, i hate to be cynical, young people often feel powerful, also often look at things in kind of binary views, Black And White view. They see good, they see bad. So it doesnt surprise me weve got polling of young people now that feel hopeful about The Future, that they believe theyll have a great Hand In control in soon or influencing soon. But i think what will happen is in their 20s and 30s theyll also see how complicated the world can be, how many different factors there are and how dreams can be crushed by reality and by, you know, just bad actors in the world and unfortunate circumstances. So i think its good that people have hope. I think its good people want to take charge of making a better future. But i got to i want to check on these 14 to 18yearolds in about 10, 15 years and see how optimistic they are. You dont give a lot of commencement speeches, do you . Come on, man youve got to brag us up a little bit. Although, anthony, i will give you credit for one piece of that in terms of perception. Im not going to make you speak for all young people in the world, but theres another aspect to this the Washington Post ipsos poll that speaks to the way young people are maybe viewing the world now where about half of the teens polled believe theyll be rich in The Future, and 19 believe they could be famous in The Future. I think that feels very much like the impact of Social Media. Although when its broken down by race black teens were the most optimistic about being rich in The Future, which i thought was a very baller thing to put in a poll. But a fifth of young people believe theyll be famous . I dont know if theres that much fame to go around. I think there might be, actually. Look, i am on tiktok all the time. I cover tiktok for nbc, and people do tend to get pretty famous and pretty viral every day. You could have a video go viral and the next day you have 100,000 followers and brand deals. So maybe our assessment of what fame means needs to shift with Social Media. Fame could be someone who has a viral video, someone who has a huge following on instagram. There are a lot of definitions of fame right now. And with that fame comes a lot of money on Social Media. Brand deals, sponsorships. And i dont want to give the impression every young person who wants to be famous on Social Media will be famous, but it can happen. And alonzo along with that before we go, i think with that additional sense of connectedness theres a growing sense of activism, some of which we saw today at the Voting Rights marches all over the country before we go. With the activism its because of connectiOn And i they understand it. And i love that about them. Cal talked about tiktok. Tiktok is something a generation understands that we dont. Like they have to have a Social Media that their parents dont understand, and thats how they organize. And i think its brilliant. So good for them. And speaking to the fame, there is so many ways to be famous. And youre famous to a certain group. You dont have to be famous to everyone anymore. Its not like Movie Star where everyone in the world knows. You have 100,000 people who know who you are and you can brand and market that. Youre famous to them. The activism is fantastic. You know why . Because when they talk to each other we Cant Lie to them. So much of what we you know when you talk about racism and prejudices and stuff youre taught lies about other people. But when youre connected and you have friends in these various groups you cant be lied to anymore. I think its beautiful. I love the young people. I wish them the best. I would just remind all young people eager to be famous of the words of dr. King. He said anybody can be great because anybody can serve. Thats where you find greatness. Before we go a story of one finally being addressed. It involves dozens of headstones from a historic africanamerican city in washington, d. C. Construction displaced the stones in the 60s. Somehow they ended up along the Potomac River at the Waters Edge of sprawl estate. Now hoir headed to a Memorial Garden in maryland, at least the ones that can be found. From our Station Nbc 4 in washington, Drew Wilder has the story. Reporter beneath the feet of the commuters and the tracks of rhode Island Brentwood Metro station there lies a horrible stain on our areas history. The truth is being uncovered more than 65 miles away where virginias governor, Marylands Governor and d. C. s mayor came together on monday. Its really important for all of us to acknowledge past wrongs. Its a disgraceful and heart breaking chapter in our history. We are committed to righting that wrong. Reporter the land below the Metro Station was once the columbian harmony stemitary, a Burial Ground for d. C. s most prominent africans and thousands of former enslaved people. In 1960 the land was sold. The remains and headstones were to be moved here, the new national Harmony Memorial Park in prince georges county. Thats where Violeta Sharps Jones went to visit her ancestors graves only to discover a mystery decades in the making. The young lady nicely told me where my ancestors were located in the grave but also told me there was no headstones. Reporter down the potomac 65 miles from the cemetery to a sprawling 1,400 Acre Farm in king george county, virginia. Stewart and his wife recently bought the land back, and during a recent walk along their shoreline they made a ghastly discovery. See looked at me and she said is that and i finished the sentence, a headstone. And we saw another one and we saw another one and we saw another one. Reporter headstones from columbian harmony cemetery. When the land was sold many of the headstones were sold off, too. The previous owner of stewarts home purchased the headstones of former enslaved people to protect his property from river erosion. I felt like somebody had punched me in the stomach, and that is the best way i can describe it. Reporter taken from their Burial Site and dumped. People who were sold in life, their headstones sold in their death. In total 37,000 people were buried at harmony. Weathering with every splash of water, 55 headstones have been salvaged so far. One of them bears the name of Patricia Howard chithams family. I dont get angry, i dont get mad. Its because she was here im insum of her existence which makes it even better. Reporter its a swell of Fulfillment Violeta Wont get today. Her ancestors headstones are still missing. I know i look forward to that day i will see them on a stone. That was Drew Wilder reporting.
