Hours in the countdown to tuesdays Withdrawal Deadline. The Kabul Airport remains under high Security Alert with gunshots ringing out earlier in the day and hundreds out on the streets. U. S. Officials are bracing for a second terrorist attack, advising americans to avoid airport gates, avoid large crowds, and leave the area if possible. Pentagon officials in just this last hour are saying the u. S. Will continue evacuations until the last day. We continue to evacuate american citizens and vulnerable afghans out of kabul. In fact, there are approximately 1,400 individuals at the Kabul Airport who have been screened and manifested for flights today. As i said yesterday, we have the ability to include evacuees on Military Airlift out of afghanistan until the very end. More than 5,000 people remain at the airport, hoping to leave the country. But nato allies, italy, germany, belgium, spain and france, have ended Evacuation Flights. That happened overnight. Brittain has made its final Evacuation Flight as well. And the New York times is reporting American Forces blew up a Cia Outpost in kabul as part of a controlled detonation to protect u. S. Secrets from getting into the hands of the taliban. U. S. Officials are hopeful taliban leaders will indeed stick to their word to allow departures after tuesdays Withdrawal Deadline, but they remain clear this is a time of high anxiety. We have evacuated more than 110,000 people so far. But we have always sought to be clear about this, and sought not to sugarcoat what will be a time of great uncertainty, a time of great fear, a time of concern for many afghans. Meanwhile, we are learning some more about the Drone Strike that Pentagon Officials say killed two members of isisk, the group that claimed responsibility for Thursdays Massacre outside of the airport. Officials say that the target of the strike was believed to be involved, both of them, in planning future attacks. 13 u. S. Service members were killed. 15 more wounded. Some outlets are reporting as many as 169 afghans killed. Nbc news learned the bomber walked up to americans who were Frisking Afghans that were going into the airport and waited until the very last possible moment to detonate a 25pound explosive vest. A gunman then opened fire on the crowd. At least 100 people were wounded, losing any hope of making it into the airport. Courtney kube is joining us from the pentagon. It was a pretty dismal report from the pentagon as we learned more details about what actually went down, the details of the Suicide Bombing. Also some good news about the retaliatory strike. Give us the latest on the evacuation mission, where It Stands, three days left now until complete withdrawal. Reporter thats right, we got a lot of facts in the briefing this morning. First off on the retaliatory strike you mentioned against two Isis Facilitators and planners, we dont know the identities of these individuals, but we do know that they were struck in Eastern Afghanistan in nangarhar province, just east of kabul. We also learned in addition to the two who were killed, there was one person wounded. Pentagon officials briefing us today, General Taylor and john kirby, the pentagon Press Secretary, they declined to provide a lot of specifics about who these people were, but did say that they were potentially involved in planning for future attacks. They would not specifically say whether they were tied directly back to the deadly attack at Kabul Airport on thursday, though. We also know now that u. S. Military forces have begun the retrograde from Kabul Airport. That means they have begun their withdrawal. Thats not a surprise to us. If they wanted to keep with this August 31st deadline of a full withdrawal of u. S. Military, they would have to start bringing people out several days in advance. As you know, alex, were only a couple days from the August 31st deadline. We also learned more specifics about the evacuation process. The number of u. S. Military aircraft that have gone out of afghanistan in the last 24 hours is pretty consistent with where its been over the last several days. There were 32 u. S. Military aircraft with about 4,000 passengers, another 34 coalition with about 2,800 passengers. While those numbers of flights are relatively consistent, the number of passengers are fewer from where they had been for the past several days, including on thursday, the day of the deadly attack at the airport. And part of that reason may be that the u. S. Has also started to bring some equipment out. Theres a lot of u. S. Military equipment there at the airport. We know from a number of briefings in the last several days that the u. S. Will prioritize lives over equipment, but the reality is there is some Military Equipment that went in with those u. S. Troops who flew in as part of the Evacuation Effort that they will have to bring out, there will be Aircraft Space used to get that out. We also know that the threat against Kabul Airport and the threat against u. S. Troops and americans there remains a very serious and persistent threat. It has not been diminished and we are still watching it actively. Lots to break down. Courtney kube, thank you so much for following that. Lets go to heidi with the latest from the White House. We heard a lot from the pentagon briefing. Lets get to what the president is doing, responding to the warnings that there will likely be another Terror Attack in kabul. Whats the response within the White House there behind you . Reporter alex, the president wanting to articulate to the nation that this remains a moment of Grave Danger for our troops. He was briefed yesterday by his senior military and national security advisers that another attack in kabul may be imminent and today the Pentagon Spokesman said nothing has changed, the threat remains real, very dynamic. That they are continuing to develop targets and they hope what they did with the Drone Strike did reduce some of the threat. But we dont have answers to that and its the same questions that we dont have answers to today that we didnt have answers to yesterday from the White House Press Secretary when we asked, how are we going to balance removing ourselves by this deadline on August 31st with the need to strike back at those who killed our brave marines and soldiers . And heres what she said yesterday, the White House Press Secretary, jan psaki. Im not going to get into details from here on hunting down and going after the terrorists who killed 13 Service Members will entail or detail. And i dont think the Department Of Defense will either. That commitment will remain until its done. Reporter and the Pentagon Spokesman saying to that question that nothing has changed about the deadline, suggesting that if they do find additional targets, that may happen before we leave on August 31st, alex, and also an update on some of the Evacuation Attempts here. We have about 500 americans as of Last Night who the White House and national security advisers are in touch with who want to leave. They are in touch with them. There are about 100 others who have not been determined who may have spouses or family and they have not given us an indication of what they want to do. But the White House watching these scenes of Hectic Chaos outside the airport there, knowing that you have a sea of humanity, individuals who are wanting to get the last ticket out, along with thousands of Al Qaeda and Isis Fighters who were released from prison, alex, and the White House also at this hour thinking about what the long arc of messaging is going to be here. The united states as a nation, we went there 20 years ago because we wanted to root out Al Qaeda, because the taliban was harboring Al Qaeda. And now 20 years later, 2. 3 trillion later, Tens Of Thousands of lives later, we are very much leaving on the offensive from a threat from another terrorist organization that has sprung up in the ashes of isis, as well as Al Qaeda. So that is something that the president will have to articulate, not just his strategy of removing us at this particular time in this particular way, but the arc of our strategy and what the mission accomplished has been here, alex. It is absolutely extraordinary, and sobering as well. And i want to adjourned to those 500 americans or so, there is one remaining family from San Diego, previous there had been eight families of students from San Diego and their families that had gone there for an educational experience. Seven of those families have gotten out. Theres one family of four remaining. Theyre hopeful to get them out. Can you imagine one hell of an educational experience given what theyve witnessed in kabul this last week or so. Thank you so much. Appreciate that. Lets turn our attention back to the Voting Rights marches and rallies in march and around the country. Weve got a team of reporters covering them for us. We begin with nbcs Josh Lederman in washington, d. C. Welcome to you on this saturday. What are you seeing there . Alex, all of the causes that progressives in recent years have championed but been unable to achieve are all converging today in washington. Make no mistake, this is about Voting Rights but its not just about Voting Rights. Its also about Labor Rights and a 15 minimum wage, its about Police Reform and black Lives Matter with many of the ralleygoers here chanting the names of black men and women who have been killed by police in recent years. And the common thread is these are all issues where these ralleygoers believe that a majority of americans are on their side, but that without Filibuster Reform and ending voter suppression, theyll be unable to achieve those goals. I spoke to one of the ralleygoers here Just A Little Bit ago who was actually here in Washington For The Second March On washington in the 1980s, which was actually focused on gay and lesbian rights. She was back here today. This is how she said today makes her feel. Im crying. Im 74 years old and we still want this to be successful. I have a dream its going to prevail, i see young people who think like i do in a peaceful, respectful way. We will get to the top and even more. We will have leverage in this world. I am just elated to be here. I am asking the president to give us better housing, better jobs. Reporter alex, as we were marching with the ralleygoers along the March Route a few minutes ago, i couldnt help but think of how much Emotion And History and political unrest these streets of the Nations Capitol have seen just in the last few years. We walked straight past st. Johns church, now known as black Lives Matter, where protesters in the wake of george Floyds Death were infamously cleared from the Plaza So President Trump could have the Photo Op with the bible. We walked down each street in lafayette square, which was turned into a Military Zone after the January 6th insurrection in the leadup to President Bidens inauguration. And today the streets, once again, filled with people. This time rallying against voter suppression, arguing that full enfranchisement is what is needed to be able to make these changes they say our country sorrily needs. Each rally bringing Focus And Attention to really critical matters. I want to adjourned the million Woman March on the 21st Of January in 2017. Remember all those pink hats. Think about all those people who get out there and make their voices heard. Thank you so much for that. Lets go to Shaq Brewster at the King Center in atlanta. Welcome to you, my friend. What can you tell us about the rally there . Reporter alex, ill pick up on where josh left off when he talked about the sense of history, the emotion there at the rally. This is a rally thats taking place right outside of the King Center. There was a rally and the group went on to march. They are back here now and later there will be a performance. In addition to the sense of history theres passion and focus. I want to show you one of the signs that you see, the we want the for the people act, one of the pieces of legislation that people are calling for. Theres also h. R. 1 theyre talking about, h. R. 4, which is the John Lewis Voter restoration act, trying to fix what the Supreme Court did recently and back in 2013. And that is the focus that has driven people here, especially in a state like georgia. They understand back in march there was a law that Brian Kemp, Governor Kemp signed, that increased the amount of restrictions on voting and they say they feel like their Voting Rights are under attack and thats what brought them here today. I want you to listen to a little bit of how they put that in their own words. Whats happening today is just its just disgraceful, the way were being treated and them denying us our rights to vote, which is automatic. The thing is 90 pages long and full of nothing, but ways to keep poor people from voting, to keep black and brown people from voting, to keep disabled people from voting. And if you fall into any of those categories, you need to be out here and doing whatever it takes to call your senators and congressmen and tell them the John Lewis Act and for the people act needs passed. Reporter theyre calling for federal legislation again because they feel like their local Voting Rights are under attack. Theres a little bit of contrast because we learned that georgia is leading the nation or is in the top few states of this country in terms of Voter Registration. More than 95 of the adults in this state are registered to vote. Thats largely credited to Secretary Of State Brian Kemp and what he did when he was Secretary Of State with the automatic Voter Registration for people who come in and get their drivers licenses. But now he is the foe as governor with the law that he passed back in march that is going to have the effect of shutting down some Drop Boxes, dramatically reducing Drop Boxes in places like here in atlanta. It limits the amount of early voting hours. That was something people took advantage of in many states where they flipped two senate seats and where President Biden was victorious by that small margin. So its because of that that people are coming out. Ill tell you one common theme i heard from multiple people is the idea that they are frustrated that they are still having this fight. People who saw this fight back in 1963, saying that i cant believe were still out here, as one lady put it to me, that march on washington, that initial one was the start of it. She said, now its time to protect the gains that were there and she says if youre not watching, if youre not focusing, if youre not out here fighting, then youre at risk of losing those exact Voting Rights. Thats what people are saying here today, alex. Shaq, as always, presenting all sides of the story. Thank you very much. Lets go from georgia to nbcs Jacob Soboroff joining us from phoenix, arizona. Welcome to you. What are you seeing there . Reporter hey, alex. I think its really fair to say here in arizona it is one of the many Ground Zeros in the fight for Voting Rights in the united states of america, and not just because of something i think everybody is familiar with at this point, the highly contested, highly partisan, widely criticized 2020 election results, which somehow is still going on and is not going to change the results of the election in any way, shape or form, but because of the history of Voting Discrimination in this state. This was one of the states that until 2013 had to have any changes to Voting Laws free cleared under the voting Rights Act of 1965, what Everyone is marching today to honor the anniversary of. But our viewers may not know that some of the Supreme Court also upheld restrictive Voting Laws in arizona that further decimated the voting Rights Act. That is why people are here today. Theyre not outside because it is over 110 degrees. Theyve gone inside this church. I want to give you an idea of whats going on out here. I was going to throw my mask on, but i just ripped it off. I want to talk to you real quick and how how is it going so far . Wonderful, plenty of people showing up for the cause. What brings you out here today . I am coming out, because in the 60s i went through this for Voting Rights and i said were back at it begin. It is really nice to see you guys. Thank you very much. I want to give you an idea of what people are rallying more. Come this way. Ive got one more mask. Live television. Let me switch this one with you. Ill throw this one on as i go inside. Hi, guys. How is everybody going . Good. You Cant Win Congress unless you vote. Check this out. These guys are doing protect arizonas democracy. Come on through, because i want to bring you back further here. Say hi to msnbc. How are you feeling about the turnout . Its been so amazing seeing everybody turn out. Good to see you. Come on down this way, because the Naacp Tucson Branch is right out here. And i did want to quickly its good to see you madam, president. Tell us your name. Karen harden. Karen, tell us about our aims and objectives for being out here today. I serve as the president of the Maricopa County Branch of the Naacp Branch Number 10 11, and were here today participating because the naacp believes in rights for all people, people from all walks of life. And were here because we need the John Lewis for the people act to be passed, so Everyone has the right to vote. This affects Everyone, veterans, disabled people. Its unfortunate that folks want to take away other peoples rights just to stay in power. So were here to help people understand that the power should go back to the people and we need Voting Rights for Everyone, regardless of race, color, creed, or social position. Let me ask you, because you mentioned both the for the people act, and the John Lewis Voting Rights advancement act, which obviously have not been passed by the full congress nor signed by the president. The filibuster comes into the mix on that. On the ground right here in arizona, we saw the Supreme Court uphold restrictive Voting Laws in arizona just as recently as this summer. What is the status of the right to vote in the state of arizona . Do people have a free and fair access to the Ballot Box at this point in your estimation . In my estimation, no, these rights are being restricted. Thats the point. Were here to see that all of these restrictions, these Voting Laws that are being passed in the State Need to stop, and we need to come together collectively as a body and do what we can to stop restrictions of people voting. Madam president im sorry, go ahead. In any form. We need to stop the limitations in any form that are occurring. I know the program is under way and i know you ran out to come talk to us. Thank you. Its really nice to meet you. Thank you for joining us live on msnbc. Alex, just as we wrap up, you can see Everyone is advocating for all kinds of stuff. These guys are registering people to vote, over there the ranked Choice Voting that was used in the new York City mayoral election. Freedom Voting Rights. Nice to see you. Its a spectacular day as far as the voeks are concerned. Theres still a lot of work to do on the ground in arizona and back in washington, d. C. Can i tell you, i love your energy . A for effort, for you, all of the activists and volunteers out there in 100 plus degree heat. Big applause. Thank you so much. Reporter thank you. Good to see you. Also we have Breaking News to share on hurricane ida. It is taking aim at louisiana and will rapidly strengthen over the warm open waters of the Gulf Of Mexico with actually nothing in its way to blunt that effort. Right now people along the Gulf Coast are rushing to prepare, a mix of voluntary and mandatory evacuations are under place. The storm has already lashed cuba with winds of up to 80 miles an hour. When it reaches the u. S. , it will be much stronger, with winds topping 130 miles an hour. Officials are warning it will be, quote, an extremely dangerous major hurricane. Lets go to Nbc News Meteorologist Bill karins who has got this new forecast. That looks massive and pretty frightening, bill. What you got for us . Its nervous times in louisiana, coastline of mississippi. Every will wiggle or wobble really could change what your town looks like when this storm is done. We know its heading in as a major hurricane, maybe category 3 or category 4 for southern louisiana. Exactly where it makes landfall and what town gets the most destruction is what we still have to figure out. The latest from the hurricane sfler, this was the 11 00 a. M. Advisory. The winds are at 85 miles per hour. We have not seen the rapid intensification this morning that we were fearful of. Thats why they went from 140 mile per Hour Landfall to 130. The weaker we can keep this thing over the next 24 Hours T better for Everyone. All indications are it is going to strengthen and maybe rapidly strengthen later tonight. The Hurricane Center has it going up to 130 mile an hour winds. Sunday morning at 7 00 a. M. , notice that the path, the Hurricane Center has it just south of New Orleans and homa, louisiana, almost right over the top of Morgan City. They have a landfall that would approximately be around 5 00 p. M. Sunday afternoon. And then the storm will be heading up through central louisiana, closest to Baton Rouge, maybe around 3 00 a. M. In the morning. Then weakening significantly into mississippi. So as far as where exactly the storm is going to go, were still watching all of these lines. The black line is the Hurricane Center forecast. All the other Color Lines are the computer model. Notice a couple are still to the right toward New Orleans. A couple of the lines are to the left, more toward lafayette. The Hurricane Center is splitting the difference in the middle. We still have finetuning to do in the next 24 hours as the storm approaches. Thats why Everyone in New Orleans is watching this so closely, and obviously the implications with the Flood Walls and pumps and everything that went into that and all the improvements since katrina 16 years ago. By the time we get into early monday morning, the storm is parallel or near to lafayette and Baton Rouge and heading up into areas of mississippi. We know where the category 3 or 4 hurricane were going to get a Storm Surge that is going to be lifethreatening, extremely dangerous. The area of pink. That is going to be to the right of landfall. If that shifts more east, all of a sudden we take the red and adjourned 10 to 15 feet to that. This is the current forecast from the Hurricane Center and it does have 4 to 7 Foot Surge on the North Side of new lens and the levies will be tested. They were built africa trina to survive a storm like this. The other issue the rainfall and this will be a problem through monday. Everyone In The Red and brown, thats upwards of 5 to 10 inches, isolated to 20. So you get the Storm Surge and the winds sunday night, and then all day monday were going to deal with Flooding Concerns and flash flooding. As far as max winds go, as of right now the core of the Hurricane Should miss New Orleans. Thats just the winds were talking about. So the max winds are predicted to be the 50 to 60 mile per hour range. Thats some damage but not widespread. Look at Morgan City and homa. We think those two areas could see the highest winds. Thats where the destruction would be to properties, roofs, to trees and the power outages, of course, in that area would be the worst. Again, if we shift this storm to the east or west, we would change who is going to get hit the worst. So were only about 24 hours, maybe 30 hours away from landfall. Were going to watch so closely to see how much stronger ida can get until landfall. These are the dangerous storms. The ones that are getting stronger all the way up to landfall. Remember when we dealt with matthew, we thought that was going to make landfall as a category 3 or 4, that got up to a 5 in the last 12 hours right before landfall. So nervous times for sure. Its good if it can hit land, lets say it hit some sort of land, nonpopulated, that would blunt it, right . Weve got nothing standing in its way. Yeah, its some of the warmest, deepest water on the entire planet, the storm is going to be right over that. That is the fuel for the storm. Some dry air could get wrapped into it. That could help us. Theres a couple things that could help us. But all indications are this storm should feast on warm water and get much stronger in the next 24 hours. We dont know exactly what city is going to be hit the hardest, but a few are going to be devastated. Im so grateful youre on the job for us. Thank you so much, bill karins, for keeping an eye. If this next story doesnt affect you, it most likely affects someone in your family, a friend or coworker. Is racing to evacuate the remaining americans and afghan allies out of afghanistan as tuesdays Withdrawal Deadline draws closer. Alongside that mission the u. S. Is striking back, killing two isisk planners in a Drone Attack in Eastern Afghanistan. That retaliation coming less than 48 hours after the Terror Group claimed responsibility for the deadly Suicide Bombing at Kabul Airport that killed 13 u. S. Service members and more than 150 afghans. Joining me now is nevada congressman, a democratic member of the House Ways And Means budget and armed services committees. Congressman, welcome back to the broadcast. Good to see you. As weve watched this tragedy in afghanistan unfold from all angles this week, what do you expect the next few days to look like as tuesdays August 31st deadline approaches . Are you confident that all americans who want to leave the country will, indeed, get on a plane . And let me clarify for those who are concerned about this, there are some americans who are dual citizens, their families are in afghanistan, they cannot necessarily get their families out yet and that might be a reason for which they choose to stay for now. Thats right, and thank you, alex, for having me on. First and foremost i want to thank our Service Members who are doing everything that they can to help evacuate every u. S. Citizen, our allies. I want to thank our veterans who have served in afghanistan over the last 20 years, and to commend them for their service. As you said, our first and foremost priority is to get every single u. S. Citizens and Ally And Partner who fought alongside us out safely. We are working towards that by tuesday on the military side, but it will continue after tuesday on the diplomatic side. I believe that the president and the administration are doing everything that they can. Clearly we have more than 105,000 people or more who have been evacuated to date, and we are working to make sure that every single person is evacuated safely. And i know that youve been working, sir, in a collaborative way with Pentagon Officials. Tell you what has been the biggest challenge about trying to get americans out and the afghan allies. Well, the most difficult part, of course, is the communication and the logistics. My office has been in direct contact with troops on the ground, as well with the State Department and defense to help a spouse of a constituent of mine with a child that is a u. S. Citizen. Unfortunately, its been difficult to get them to the proper gate in order for them to be processed for evacuation, and so every single day, in fact multiple times a day, i have reached out to officials along with my staff to try to assist, along with many other constituents who have contacted our office for assistance. Im sure you will not let up on that front. Let me ask you about the logic behind any republicans who are calling for the president to resign or to be impeached over all of this. Whats your response to that . Well, my response, my question to them is, where is your patriotism . I remember after the attack on our country after 9 11, President Bush then asked our country to come together and to support our troops, to support our country, and to support our national interests, and i didnt agree with everything that President Bush stood for back then, but i didnt want our country to fail. I wanted him and our country and our Service Members to succeed. And we need that for President Biden, for our Service Members and our country, and so for republicans who are trying to make this about partisanship or political brinksmanship, i would say put all that aside. Let us focus on every u. S. Citizen and our allies getting out safely. There will be time enough for us to have congressional hearings on this process. But to be clear, this started under the previous administration and the deadline that they set for ending the war in afghanistan. Congressman, let me ask you about what were seeing across the country all day today, these protests demanding the protection of Voting Rights. Its also marking the anniversary of Martin Luther King jr. s historic march on washington. How meaningful is this . I saw your segment earlier and it is energizing. This is a good trouble rally. This is what John Lewis stood for, what he, in fact, bled for on the Edmond Pettis Bridge and i want to commend my colleagues and our chairwoman beaty, j. K. Butterfield and so many others that have worked to bring forward the voting right act. Im proud to be a sponsor of that bill, along with the for the people act. But others have already said what this means and what It Stands for. It is our most fundamental right, which is our right to vote. But its not only about Voting Rights. Its also about Labor Rights, its about civil rights, its about womens rights, and we cant pass any of the important legislation unless we protect our right to vote. And that is why the senate needs to take up both the John Lewis voting Rights Act, as well as the for the people act. They need to pass it so that President Biden can sign it, so that we can prevent these there are 18 states this year alone who have passed more than 30 laws to try to suppress the rights of people to vote. And those people that they are trying to suppress are largely women, people of color, seniors, and young people. Why . Because they know that when we vote, our issues will be at the top of the agenda and we must continue to fight for our democracy and for our future. Let me ask you about the Supreme Court blocking the cdc from enforcing the federal Eviction Freeze on renters. I know your democratic Colleague Cori Bush tweeted this in response, if they think this partisan ruling is going to stop us from fighting to keep people housed, theyre wrong. Congress needs to act immediately for every unhoused or soon to be unhoused person in our districts. Congressman, how can Congress Act . How is this going to impact your constituents . I agree with my colleague, cori bush, i commend her for standing up and sleeping outside of the u. S. Capitol to bring attention to this. And i joined with her in calling for the administration to act, which they ultimately did, to extend that eviction moratorium. We are in the middle of a pandemic. No family, and especially a child, should be evicted in the middle of a public health crisis. Growing up as a child, i have experienced these forms of impact and trauma, and i never want another Child Or Family to have to experience that. Since last year, i have voted for 46 Billion of Rental Relief to go to our local governments, and quite honestly, we need to get that money out faster. We have small landlords who can not afford to continue to cover the experience and they also need help. So we are working with our local officials, i am in my state, and with local officials to help them get that Rental Assistance out. But we need a federal response, and i know that Chairwoman Maxine waters and our leadership are working to bring additional legislative measures to the house for our full consideration, because we cannot allow any family, and especially children, to be evicted and become unhoused in the middle of a pandemic, a public health crisis. Congressman, i have one last quick question on infrastructure. With the house having passed the 3. 5 trillion resolution, this is after Speaker Pelosi struck the deal with moderate democrats with the Floor Vote scheduled for September 27th. Moderates have been fighting to pass the bipartisan bill, but even as this deal is struck, progressives are standing firm saying theyre only going to vote for infrastructure after passing the reconciliation bill. Where do you stand on all of this, and are you at all concerned about some sort of a logjam before September 27th . Absolutely not, alex. Look, democrats, were united. We have an agenda. Its the republicans that dont stand for anything. When they were in charge, the only thing they wanted to do was to give Tax Cuts to the very wealthy and the big corporations. Under democratic majority in the house, in the senate, and with the democrat in the White House, we are actually working to pass a bipartisan infrastructure bill, we are working to deliver Child Care Support to families, creating millions of jobs in the infrastructure package, helping to make the Child Tax Credit permanent, helping to lift more than 50 of children out of poverty, making sure that we make paid leave available to families who need it, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, particularly for seniors, and taking the savings from the reduced cost and expanding benefits for medicare recipients by including dental, vision and hearing. This is what democrats stand for when theyre in the majority. The american people, and making sure that their lives are improved and that we are fighting for the people. That is what were about and were united and we are going to get that job done. Okay, good to hear. Thank you so much, good to see you. So we have Breaking News to share with you on hurricane ida. The next hour, the president will receive a virtual briefing from the Fema Administrator on all of the preparations ahead of the storm. Well bring that to you live. This Morning Hurricane hunters fell into the eye of ida to gather valuable data as people are anxiously waiting for the landfall tomorrow. It is expected as a category 4 storm. Joining me, from the national Hurricane Center, ken graham. Its been keeping you very busy. Lets talk about the biggest area of concern right now. What are you pinpointing . Were watching real close the intensification of this hurricane, looking at the satellite, starting to get the earliest indications of an eye right there. Hurricane hunters have been helping us pinpoint where this is going. We still forecast a major hurricane, category 4, 140 mile per hour winds at landfall. This is dangerous. This is just a Lifethreatening Situation when it comes to the wind, the rain and the Storm Surge and i just really am urging everybody, if the local officials are saying to get out of some of these areas, youve got to do it, because the winds are going to arrive tomorrow. Youve got to wrap it up today. Do we have a timeline, sir, as to when we think landfall will happen . And if you can pinpoint it i know weve been focusing on New Orleans given what happened 16 years ago tomorrow with katrina, the levies were rebuilt. God willing they hold. How much in danger is New Orleans specifically . Specifically with New Orleans under that hurricane warning, so you think about the system, we focus on the center so often, but you have a large swath of those tropical Storm Force winds and Hurricane Force winds out of the center. So they could get winds, but not only that, some Storm Surge as well and really have some large values here. Yes, the levies are going to help. But what we have to watch out for besides that is the rainfall. Alex, just a really lifethreatening amount of rainfall. Some of the forecasts are really looking at 10 to 15 inches of rain, some places could get 20 inches of rain. So even if you have a system to the west of the city, you can still get that rainfall, you can still get tornados associated with it. Outside of those Risk Reduction systems, those areas are still vulnerable to the Storm Surge. So youve got to watch out for these and listen to local officials and while its daylight out, Today Is The Day to really get preparations complete. Point well taken. I hope folks are listening to you. Let me ask you how far inland any kind of surge could create flooding. Is it a matter of miles . Could it go through the state of New Orleans given the Lowlying Level of that state . Where does it go . Yeah, outside of that federal Risk Reduction system you can get those vulnerable areas, but theres other levies, some of the local levies could be over top. You have other areas that are vulnerable as well. Its not just on the coast. Think about this, Morgan City to the mouth of the mississippi river, 10 to 15 feet of Storm Surge. We ran 1 thourngs hurricanes to come up with these numbers. This is what you can see is a potential peak and its not just on the coast. You look at 6 to 9 feet, and all these bays, that water gets shoved into these areas and filters in. So even inland you could see some high surge. Even at lake pontchartrain, it accumulates 4 to 7 feet, so any one of these areas, youve got to listen to the officials and be ready for the water. Storm surge is the leading cause of fatalities in these systems and we need to be ready. It was henri last weekend and now weve got ida through the Gulf Coast this weekend. Were listening right now to a News Conference telling New Orleans residents to pay attention and evacuate, if told to do so. Lets take a listen to Collin Arnold from the new Orleans Office of homeland security. Take a listen, Everyone. 74 to 1110 miles an hour can cause downed trees, Structure Damage and prolonged power outages. Heavy rain in excess of 10 to 15 inches in isolated areas that could be higher, can cause flooding. Dangerous Storm Surge could cause flooding outside of the Levy System and cause some overtopping potentially on the west bank. Hurricane warning is in effect for all of New Orleans. A Storm Surge warning is in effect for the areas outside the Levy System and on parts of the west bank. A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for our full area. Thank you so much, mayor. Thank you, collin. I just want to speak very briefly about resilience, and i think about this a lot, given what tomorrow represents to this city, to our residents, and to this country as a whole. There are no more resilient people than in this city, and weve gone through this. We know how to do this. And our residents know how to be calm. And i think theres a moment to put a little bit of this into perspective, in the sense that this year we hit our average annual rainfall in july. We had the fifth Wettest Spring that this city has ever had in recorded history. And we havent had substantial flooding this year. And theres a lot of reasons for that. One, in the last three years weve replaced over 18 miles of Subsurface Drainage and weve replaced over 100,000 linear feet of that drainage. Weve flushed more than 1. 2 linear feet of drain lines. We have completed multiple green infrastructure projects and right now under construction we have 44 miles of Subsurface Drain lines under construction. And our canals, our Sewage And Water canals have been cleaned. Weve completed Line Point repairs, 2,500 linear feet. Theres a real drive in improving our infrastructure just for moments like today, in the next couple of days. That work has been under way. This mayor has focused on that and our teams, our operations and infrastructure teams, are making sure that work is completed for events like this. Take care of your family, your pets, Take Care of your neighbors, check on them, and know that this city, the folks in infrastructure, the folks in operations, are improving our environment to better withstand events just like the one were facing today. Just some technical notes, yesterday the Department Of Public Works reopened the crossings at the Florida Avenue Canal to support hurricane evacuation. That was some work that was going on. The Cashiers Office will be closed today at 5 00 p. M. Until further notice. If your car is inaccessible and you want it, get over there, pay the fine, et cetera. Additionally, weve been very close with the 10,000 personnel coming in from around clearly were going to be monitoring this News Conference thats gotten very specific local to residents there in New Orleans. For good reason, the point was made that it is the wettest year on record. That record was hit halfway through the year in the month of july. So you can imagine how the waters that are barreling towards the Gulf Coast, specifically New Orleans, are unwelcome in the form of hurricane ida. Lets go right now to talk about the new cry among top republicans this week. Its for president Joe Biden to either resign or face impeachment if and when the gop takes back the house next year. House minority leader, kevin mccarthy, is not ruling out either option. This isnt the tested leadership the president promised. Its a picture of weakness and incompetence. If you want to be president of the free world, you have to have the faith, the trust and the confidence of the american public. President biden lost that yesterday. There will be a day of reckoning. And joining me now is Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee adviser, also a former spokesperson for congressmen and senators, and senior director of Progressive Programming at siriusxm and a most of zerlina on peacock. Just one question to each of you on this topic, given how were covering hurricane ida. This was not how democrats treated President Reagan or other republican President S in the face of previous Terror Attacks. Why are republicans doing this . This is completely, a party thats made a concerted and dedicated effort to try to undermine democracy and its just par for the course. Republicans have made the calculation that their only path to power is to try to destabilize a free democracy. Its ironic watching everything going on with this hurricane because i remember last time we had a major Weather Event when Donald Trump was president and he used a sharpie to draw the path of a hurricane. You want to talk about incompetence . How about the guy that told us we should inject ourselves with blaech . How about the guy who presided over half A Million american deaths right now in this country because of this deadly disease of covid that were still dealing with . Time and again weve seen incompetence, destruction, antidemocratic values, and republicans had nothing to say about it. So now for them to try to suggest that Joe Biden fits in that category is ridiculous. I hope democrats are paying attention, because if republicans take back congress, well get two more years of trying to impeach Joe Biden, trying to destabilize this country, undermine democracy. Whats going on in afghanistan will happen right here in america if republicans have their way. Those historical perspectives are extraordinary reminders. What happened to the days when the country would unite and save politics for later . And keep in mind this threat is not yet over. Well, youre right, alex, and i think that the longterm threat of international terrorism here in the united states, which, again, we just remembered this week that that was the original reason we went into afghanistan 20 years ago, i think that that should be the focus going forward and the playing of the politics i mean, i feel like curt is right, its on brand for republicans in this moment because they have no other default position. If you said up, they would say down. They just say the opposite of what democrats are doing or saying to appear like the strong opposition. But in this particular moment, it requires us all to come together. I spoke to Mary Trump earlier this week, and one of the things she said that stood out to me was that Donald Trump essentially conditions us all to be us versus them instead of versus us covid or us versus international terrorist groups or us versus the taliban and republicans fall into that too often and they look ridiculous, particularly since there was a republican president that got us into this war in the first place. Thank you for making your Comments Count and im sorry its so short. I appreciate you both. For all of you who want to catch zerlina maxwells show, it is midnights at 6 00 eastern on the peacock streaming channel. Bracing for ida, the hurricane is intensifying.
