Tonight, why so many are being so misled. The pandemic gross around the country. Then the January 6th committee issues a raft of document requests. What we know about their demand for White House records. Plus, never mind the Big Lie. How every single House Republican just voted against strengthening democracy and what you need to know about what is being called the Stunning Radical and terrifying decision by the Supreme Court. All in starts right now. Good evening from New York. Im chris hayes. Ive been haunted the last few days by a little bit of a mystery. How is it that the daily Death Numbers from Covid Have topped 1,000 and how are we seeing this Level Devastation and death with the virus despite just over 60 of the eligible population fully vaccinated and 81 of seniors vaccinated, senior being the most vulnerable to the virus making up a huge portion of the deaths from covid weve seen until now. How are we in this situation . We came across this New York times article which helps makes sense of things. It says the u. S. Has a far higher share of seniors without full Vaccine Protection than many other wealthy countries. A key risk factor, driving serious Covid Illness and death. And those seniors are concentrated in certain places such that national averages actually mask the high rate of older americans in broad swaths of the country like you see In The Red there on the map who remain deeply vulnerable. So, why is that . Why are we an outlier compared to other wealthy countries that have the privilege of having lots of vaccines to distribute, where we have big chunks of our seniors who are not vaccinated . The reason for this, one main reason, i suspect, is this. The american right here in the u. S. Has been more hostile to Public Health measures across the board than peer countries since covid came ashore. You saw it from the beginning of the pandemic, this alternate reality thats been constructed and the central Ordering Principle of that reality was that and is that covid is actually not that Big A deal. Thats it. Thats the central premise, that people are lying to you about its severity. And theyre lying to you about how to solve it. This has been their Guiding North Star principle. All these different behaviors and beliefs, some of them bizarre have gotten people sick and killed, frankly. They all flow from that. Stuff like i dont want to wear a mask or i dont want to avoid crowded indoor spaces or i dont want to get a vaccine. The more bizarre manifestations of that has been this search, really strange thing thats been unfolding for a year and a half. The search for some hidden Miracle Cure that the people in charge, experts, fda, dr. Anthony fauci, who are trying to control you with their tyrannical Health Orders wont tell you about. If you had this secret cure i have in my Back Pocket you would realize its not that big of a deal and hence you would be free from their Tyranny And Mind coal. Thats led to some fringe for untested and unproven treatment. Sometimes that is based on Early Promiing data. This is all a complicated, fast, unspooling pandemic. People are figuring things out, scientists among them. Then its been taken upon all sorts of rational calculus and turned into a weird covid cult. We saw this first with the antimalarial drug, hydroxychloroquine. There were early promising studies about it. But then trumpers became obsessed with it in a freudian, neurotic way obsessed. Fox news would dump their Medicine Cabinet to talk about the drug. Dr. Smith, you pointed out that not a single patient of yours, covid patient that has been on the Hydroxy Regimen has had to be intubated. Its a game changer, correct . Its an absolute game changer. Laura, i think this is the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Im very serious. Wow. This is unbelievable. All the naysayers and people dismissing this, just wait, okay . The good news is coming. Well, that was april of 2020. Now, to her credit, Laura Ingram called that pronouncement unbelievable. She was correct. No it was not to be believed. A couple of days later she met with trump at the White House to pitch him on hydroxychloroquine and he was told. A Health Official who helped oversee Covid Vaccine Development was ousted from his role after his objections to the antimalaria drug as a treatment for covid. And then in june of 2020, the fda said they no longer had reason to believe the drug was effective against covid. And after all that, that embarrassing episode imagine going on television, Night After night, promoting this Crank Cure that turns up not to work, telling people that its right around the corner. The good news is coming. And then just being flatly, horrifyingly wrong while people die by the thousands. Imagine that. After all that, there was still this thing, there had to be a secret cure. Where is it . This animated one of the most infamous moments of trumps presidency. Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous whether its Ultra Violet or very powerful light and i think you said that hasnt been checked but youre going to test it. I said supposing you brought the light in inside the body through the skin or in some other way. And i think you said youre going to test that, too. And then i see the disinfectant knocks it out in a minute. One minute. Is there a way we can do something like that by Injection Inside or almost a cleaning. You see it gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number in the lupgs. It would be interesting to check that. That is still as shocking a year later, yes, the famous Shine A Light in your orifaces or inject bleach moment. Again trump is looking for another Silver Bullet which he found in monochromal Antibodies Regeneron which can be somewhat effective according to the data we have. Now trump got it after he contracted covid and called it, quote, a cure. Its not. He said that everyone would have free access to it. They, of course, did not. But trumps bolder and not necessarily sturdiest of friends got regeneron when it came down with the virus. And its an unproved investigational therapy and limited clinical data available, regeneron has retained its good graces in the Conservative Movement to the point where florida governor Ron Desantis instead of doing everything possible to try to get people vaccinated, which is one thing you could do if youre governor, is out there, setting up free monoclonal Antibody Injection sites which include two injections in the stomach and one in the arm. According to the data we have Day By day, getting more data every day, continue to provide tremendous protection against hospitalization, severe Illness And Death even if those vaccine s have not shut down transmission in the way we initially hoped. Despite the fact we have that, we have now arrived at the most gothic chapter of this story, which is people taking Livestock Dewormer to treat covid. Yes. The stuff used to treat parasites in animals. Again, why . It flows from the same conviction, right . This guiding principle. There has to be a Miracle Cure they are not telling you about. Everything works backwards off of that. Republican senator Ron Johnson of wisconsin was ahead of the curve on this one. I have to say. He host a Covid Hearing with two doctors pushing for the use of the dewormer drug ivermectin. It seems like a No Brainer that you should try it. And here is the thing about ivermectin. That is my message today, that it is the cure for this by the way, you support ivermectin, right . Youre not confused about that, right, senator . 3. 7 billion doses have been administered since it was first developed in 1987. 3. 7 billion, something like over 60 in Subsaharan Africa takes it on a daily basis with almost no side effects. Only sidesques attributed to it are those that are considered to be part of the diseases they treat, which is the ridding of the parasites. And so given a mountain of evidence that ive presented as well as the Safety Profile on a Risk Benefit therapeutic analysis, you cannot come up with a credible argument to not give it. Okay. Well, let me just try. Its true that there are people who take it around the world. Its true that theres even a published study or two that shows it suggests it might, maybe do something for humans. But theres a process to okay drugs for a reason. And more than eight months later weve got Farm Supply stores that are are upping out of ivermectin, happening in large parts of the country that are seeing a significant increased in covid cases. One county in northwest arkansas, the Jails Physician is giving it to inmates. Yesterday it came up during a Finance And Budget Committee Hearing in that county. I learned today that the doctor is giving ivermectin, cow dewormer, to inmates at the jail. He said im taking ivermectin. He has members of his family on ivermectin, disregarding Fda Guidance in giving dewormer to our inmates in the jail and at a time when the world is laughing at us, for people taking cow dewormer, i think we need to reevaluate who we are using. In texas, Poison Control says they are seeing an increase in calls about exposure to the Livestock Dewormer ivermectin and the director of Poison Center has had enough. When you see a picture of a cow, horse or sheep, its amazing to me that people would rather, you know, trust what they might have read on the internet as opposed to, you know, learning more about, you know, just how effective the vaccines are. This is where the madness has gotten us. People raiding the shelves of Farm Supply stores looking for Livestock Dewormer containing an antiparasitic drug because theyve been told it Cures Covid and the bad Public Health experts dont want you to know it. Theyre covering it up. Thats a different side of the same coin of the fact that we have millions of seniors in america who havent been vaccinated. And now thousands dying from a disease they dont have to die from because they have not been vaccinated, because they have been told from the beginning by people like Laura Ingram that theres some Miracle Cure for covid or its actually not that big of a deal. Dr. Gaylord lopez is the director of the georgia Poison Center and he joins me now. First, this is a deworming agent, Parasitic Deworming agent. What is it chemically . Youre talking about a medicine that has been used for a number of conditions, everything from Skin Conditions to parasittic conditions. This is pharmaceutical grade, not Livestock Grade thats being prescribed and we are starting to get these kind of crazy calls where people are now playing doctor and this is very dangerous. Have you seen an uptick . And did you know it was happening when you first started getting these calls . Yeah. We have known for the last two or three weeks. I mean, in a given year, i might get a handful of these calls from parents who are using it for Body Lice and whatnot. In the month of august alone, were near 21 calls on this, everything from people wanting to take it to people who are taking it and having symptoms, and even Health Care professionals calling us about what the proper dose is. Its really shocking. And its really alarming. A lot of us in the Poison Center world. Yeah. And it strikes me that this is sort of paired, i think i dont want to make assumptions but its paired with vaccine hesitancy. My sense is that this is not people are not getting worried about people are not going out to get ivermectin if theyre vaccinated Per Se and theres obvious tension there between what people think is safe to consume based on Clinical Trial data when weve got probably more Clinical Trial data on these vaccines than just about any other recent medicine that could be offered verse an Offlabel Use of a Livestock Dewormer. Keep in mind, these are products that are highly concentrated. People dont even know what the proper dose can be. And, of course, in a world where, you know, one dose is probably going to work, i think ill take five. This is where we run into problems. Right. Also keep in mind, people are self treating and what if theyre taking other medications that could interact . This is where we come in to play to try to figure out, hey, this may be problematic. In fact, weve had people who are taking certain types of fluid and taking ivermectin and guess whats happening. The levels of ivermectin are becoming higher in the body because what theyre drinking are prechting it from being broken down. Its really dangerous. The fda had a sort of funny but serious tweet saying you are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, yall, stop it. What does the situation look like in georgia right now from your perspective . Yeah. Weve had a couple of people actually send us photos of the Sheep Version of ivermectin. It just troubles us. Here theyll Trust Livestock animal as opposed to the effective vaccines that are out there . It blows our mind that they would play doctor, read a couple of posts and trust that as opposed to the hundreds of thousands and millions of doses that weve been given of the vaccine. And theyre not trusting that data. But Theyll Trust the internet because they know that that magic Word Ivermectin is out there and this must be the new thing. Every question in American Political Life In The Moment revolves around who you trust and who you listen to. Dr. Lopez, thank you for making time tonight. Thanks for having me. I want to bring in democratic governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy. Governor murphy, you have had some facetoface meetings with folks heckling about whether its a vaccine or nonpharmaceutical interventions like masking and the like. How confident are you that the message has gone out to New Jerseyians about the safe and effective vaccines and to sort of steer clear of Crank Cures . Good to be back, chris. I would say recently confident. We crossed 5 oin 5 Billion fully vaccinated individuals today. We have over 6 Million who have at least one dose. But theres still a small block of folks who believe this nonsense and were chopping away as best we can every day. The folks who are not vaccinated in our state at least break into two categories. One is those who believe that look to anchors or some other crazy theory of cheering. Theres another group thats legitimate. They make work three jobs, think its expensive, may not speak english, whatever it may be. We just grind away every day. Were knocking on doors in dozens of communities, doing our best. Its really hard. This Misinformation Stuff makes life hard and, frankly, if it werent so funny, its tragic is the problem at the end of the day. Yeah. And on top of that, there really delta really does appear and the data has been clear on this in our experience, its much more transmissible, more insidious, and we have a lot of it going around this country. More than were catching on our surveillance. And ive seen data. Vermont has seen cases go up, although still very low in the aggregate. Israel is still battling this thing. They have a very high vaccinated population. When youre a governor, i think theres an idea, maybe i subscribe to it, of were going to hit a threshold of not having to deal with this anymore and that doesnt look like thats the case. The question is, now what . Yeah. National Governors Association Meeting here in denver, im honored to serve as vice chair. We had a very good, sober, constructive meeting across the aisle with a handful of governors today. One of the points i made is its very humbling, dealing with this pandemic. Every time you think youve figured it out, it takes a turn that you dont expect. But and this is the big but, the Miracle Drug is in our midst. That is the vaccine. As much as you could still get the virus, you can still unlikely, but you could still end up in the hospital. Overwhelmingly, you are far more protected having been vaccinated than unvaccinated. So, my plea with folks would be stop looking for crazy, nonapproved, outofleftfield drugs and get vaccinated. If theyre safe and they work, including against this delta variant. But i think for expectations, in terms of the political communication of this, theres two ways to think about the future of covid. One was i think i thought this, and no longer do a future like measles or Chicken Pox or polio, right . Were going to get a vaccine. Were going to stamp that thing out. Youre not going to get Chicken Pox anymore. Youre not going to get polio anymore. We have a vaccine for that. The other is like the flu. We have a flu vaccine. People still get the flu. People still die from the flu. The flu is around but its not the menace that Prevaccine Covid was. It seems like were headed more toward the flu trajectory. What does that mean about how you talk to your citizens about what their expectations should be in terms of this Fall And Winter and living with covid . Chris, its exactly consistent with where weve been speaking and trying to direct where we believe this is headed. I say that with humility. Every time you think you figured it out, it surprises you. Listen, weve now got the Booster Shots effective, beginning the week of september 20th. I just got my flu shot appointment. I think its going to be much more. If i had based on the conversations i had with medical experts and scientists that we do all the time, i think this lands very much closer to your Flu Model where its going to be with us at some interval, well take a booster. I dont think anyone knows what that interval looks like. Sadly, people will get sick and some will die. But we will have well be able to live a normal life. It will be in our midst. But that does not mean we cant go on with life. I think thats where it lands, if i had to predict. Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey there, national governors association. I would love to be a Fly On The Wall off the record there. Come on out next time, chris. Good to be with you. Okay. Capitol Police Officer who shot and killed Capitol Rioter Ashley babbit on January 6th has remained concealed even as rightwing politicians have called for that Persons Name to be released including former president donald trump. Lester holt will sit down with that officer for an exclusive interview. At the same time the house January 6th committee issued a sweeping formal records request, asking the Trump Administration to turn over records of communication related to the assault of the Capitol And Warning failure to do so would be met with subpoenas. Chairman Benny Thompson demanded documents and xhupgss relating to several individuals, including three of his children, steve banon, rudy giuliani, among others. Eight federal agencies, most notably The National Archives which maintains the White Houses records. National political correspondent of politico who has been reporting on the January 6th insurrection in the aftermath and joins me now i slightly misspoke. The Trump Administration is no longer, of course, as a recipient of the request. So who are these requests directed to . And do they have the documents that are being asked . The requests are directed to the current officials who head the different agencies, so Lloyd Austin at dod, Alejandro Mayorkas At Dhs and the head of The National Archives. Thats important because these are none of these people, obviously, are trump. The step that trump could take and a step he put out tonight which indicates he will, would be to sue to ask a judge to block the different components of the government from participating and from producing these records. And what trump could do is he could say this is a violation of Executive Privilege because its an effort to get communications between myself and the white House Counsel, myself and my Chief Of Staff. He will be able to make a legal argument that series people will take seriously on that font and Thats Something that could dramatically slow down the pace with which this investigation is moving. Its particularly important because copyingional investigators are so close to getting an interview with Jeffrey Clark, one of the top doj officials who actually tried to get the department to tell State Lawmakers they had evidence of Election Fraud when they didnt. Up until now, trump has said he will not make an Executive Privilege claim to try to block Jeffrey Clark from testifying. That means that if clark didnt want to testify, he wouldnt be able to cite Executive Privilege as a reason not to do so. What just changed today, trump is saying, at least obliquely, hold your horses. Im actually going to make an Executive Privilege complaint, and that may mean it will take us longer to hear from clark about those last days at Doj Zpleps given some testimony over in the senate. Two things to stress that are important, the scope of this weve got The National Archives asking for anything from the 6th through the 20th related to the mental stability of donald trump, his fitness for office. And then the letter to doj asking for communications involving mark meadows, rudy giuliani, some of the president s lawyers, or any other person from November 3rd through the 20th, relating to potential Doj Intervention or litigation filed by the Trump Campaign or states challenging Election Results or otherwise questioning the validity of the 2020 election result. My suspicion is thats not a Fishing Expedition and they have reasonable certainty theres documents on the other side of this. But to your point about the legal machinations here, this is not a congressional subpoena asking this is about a former administration to furnish this over and trump would have to intervene in that. Reporter thats right. Trump would have to ask a judge to issue an injunction blocking these different departments and entities within the u. S. Government from the turning over these materials to capitol hill. In addition, its possible that lawyers within Bidens Justice Department and within bidens white House Counsels office, surprisingly, might be sympathetic with trump because if they come down on the side of Executive Privilege doesnt protect the president s oneonone conversations with white House Counsel or with his Chief Of Staff democrats are always thinking a couple of years and couple of stations ahead. And for them, does that mean that down the road when Jim Jordan has a copyingional committee, he will be able to get bidens private conversations with Ron Mcklain . Thats something that these Government Lawyers always worry about. It will be a complicated, legal fight and the Outcome Wont necessarily be predictable. Betsy woodruff swan, thank you. Com the Supreme Court of the united states stacked now at 63, so far that Supreme Court has been at pains to not appear overly extreme. For instance, they did not gut the affordable Care Act on preposterous pretenses. They did not overturn the election. So, you know, good for them on that. And roberts has depthly cultivated an image of the court that has won a surprising degree of approval from liberals. 59 of democrats strongly or somewhat approved at how the court is doing, which is kind of nuts actually. Its two points higher than how republicans view the court. But i am here to tell you this image of a moderate court is wildly deceiving because outside of the spotlight, the aca, the court has issued stunning extreme rulings upholding Lower Court extremists and last Night After the close of business they did it again. They upheld a lower Courts Order that the biden administration against its own wishes and policies, must essentially restart from scratch a discontinued Trump Administration Immigration Policy that had caused widespread Misery And Harm for thousands of asylum seekers. Legal observers called it unbelievable, procedurally and substantively and terrifying. Saying im genuinely shook by what the Supreme Court just did. I thought they were better than this. I think Brett Kavanaugh was better than this. Yes, its so bad i now have a drastically lower opinion of Brett Kavanaugh. Melissa murray, and cohost of the strict podcast in case of full disclosure, my wife is also a cohost of. Melissa, it was interesting to see the kind of alarms go off Last Night from court watchers about this order. And i think to explain it, first we start with what Category Order this is. People sometimes refer to it as the Shadow Docket. These are the ways the court intervened in lower Court Opinions where they dont have to give a reason. A lot of it is pretty alarming. Thats exactly right, chris. The Shadow Docket has received a lot of attention over the last couple of years, but again that whole perception of a relatively moderate or nonpartisan court really only holds if you exclude the Shadow Docket decision. But, in fact, theres been a lot of Shadow Docket activity over the course of the last term. These are Emergency Appeals that are made to the Supreme Court. And the court makes decisions, often in unsigned, very short opinions where they dont elaborate on their reasoning and dont even know who signed on to what parts of the opinion unless the justices publicly signal their disagreement, as is the case in Last Nights opinion. But again, these are not argued with full briefing and oral argument like regular cases on the merits docket. They are truly in the shadows, often escape our Point Of View except when situations like this arise where the decisions are quite extreme. So the Trump Administration has something called a remain in mexico policy, mpp was how it was referred to in shorthand. Basically it was taking people showing up at the border seeking asylum and saying you have to stay in mexico while this is all adjudicated. There are shelters in suarez, preyed upon by kidnappers, yada, yada. The Trump Administration says were reversing this policy. We dont want to do this anymore they get sued by texas and what does the Lower Court federal Judge Rule . This is actually quite unusual. This was a Trump Appointee in texas, Matthew Kizmarik and said that the Policy Decision had been underexplained by the administration, he actually ordered the administration to reinstate the policy pending the appeal. The appeal is going on but they gave the administration exactly a week to reinstate the policy. That prompted the Emergency Appeal to the Supreme Court. The lower Court Opinion by itself is quite unusual, requiring the administration to reinstate the policy and essentially negotiate with the foreign government over this policy. Right. Thats part of it, too. Theres a huge kind of implications here, both for the folks on the border and american foreign policy. Its a lower District Judge saying you, joe biden, go talk to the mexican president and get this started up again, which itself is wild. I think a lot of legal observers thought well the Supreme Court, this is so out of nowhere, so poorly reasoned, theyre not going to okay this. Last night 63 Supreme Court was like, yep, listen to the good man, the District Court Judge and go start this Trump Program you discontinued Zplt Court was very clear. They relied on an earlier decision that liberals had actually cheered the department of Homeland Security University of california region, the daca decision. The Trump Administration did not rescind the Daca Program lawfully unless it provided adequate reasons, which the Trump Administration failed to do. Liberals cheered that opinion. The Supreme Court giveth and the Supreme Court taketh away. In this particular decision it said that the biden administration had not provided adequate reasoning for why it wanted to end the remain in mexico policy. But is that true . Like it does seem to me like theres a big difference, like who is on the ground, the fact that the program essentially is discontinued where daca was functioning, and the lawyering the biden administration did verse the Trump Administration. There are a lot of differences here. All the things that you suggested on the two programs with not in the same posture as they went up on appeal here. The other thing thats really different was that Daca Case was on the docket. There was full briefing, full oral argument in that case. It wasnt a Shadow Docket decision. It wasnt a decision that the court issued without giving any guidance. Here the court really provided no information, no guidance to the administration as to how to explain what was inadequate about its original explanation. Judicial activism is what liberals do. Judicial restraint is when a random District Court Judge tells the president of the united states to start negotiating with mexico and restart a program that had been discontinued in a week. Melissa murray, thank you very much. On the show Last Night we did a segment on the California Recall Election and the 46 candidates trying to unseat democratic governor gavin newsom. The rules of the game, or more specifically the rules by which an election happens matters a lot. Take, for example, california recall process. We did a segment on this yesterday. It blew my mind. It continues to. In the state of california an elected official can be removed from his or her position for any reason during a recall vote. It takes a petition with a number of signatures equivalent to 12 of the votes in the last election. Not citizens, votes. The Recall Ballot then asks voters whether or not they want to remove the official, yes or no, up or down. If yes, who should replace him . Theres no limits on how many candidates can run and whoever gets the most votes, even a narrow plurality, wins, becomes the next governor in this case. So, think of this. You can have a situation where 49 of voters in california want to keep the person in office. Thats not good enough. That incumbent is replaced by someone who got 15 or 20 of the vote. Like you can get 49 of the vote and lose to a person who gets 20 of the vote is the most insane antidemocratic procedure i think ive ever seen. I cant believe it exists, but it does. And its happening right now, as you may have heard. Governor gavin newsom, a democrat, is facing a Recall Election scheduled for september 14th. There are 46 candidates running to replace him. Yes, you heard that correctly, 46. The person most likely to replace the governor of california, if the recall is successful, is a conservative Radio Host named Larry Elder against mask mandates, minimum Wage And Abortion rights. This process is totally legal, in the constitution of the state of california. Added with the approval of california voters in 1911. Theres a lot of that state Cops Contusion that could use a second look, by the way. Any state could change the rules of the game and alter their election outcomes. Think of president ial elections. States decide how to award their electoral votes. Conceivably the state of, say, pennsylvania or wisconsin, michigan, if they had a republican trifecta, could make a new rule, theyre going to give all votes to the candidate who wins the mantle of the counties in the states and that would be a democratic election, campaign, people go and vote, but it would essentially ensure republican victory, oneparty rule, likely lead to minority rule. Over the years weve seen all sorts of kinds of shady regulations, rule changing. Nothing quite that aggressive. But a lot of stuff like it that is aimed at subverting democracy in this country. Its a story as old as the country. And the voting Rights Act of 1965 aimed to control a lot of that. Thats before a key pillar that was just knocked down recklessly by chief justice John Roberts in 2013, who sort of famously declared the South Wasnt Racist anymore. And further damage was done again this year in a big case out of arizona. And that changed the rule of the game, Invalidating Parts of the voting Rights Act and made it easier for states and localities to rake the rules. So, yesterday, democrats In The House of representatives moved to bring back some of those protections. Guess what . Not a single republican supported it. Not one. Where that effort now stands is next. W stands is n next and even when things go a bit wrong, weve got your back. Here, things work the way you wish they would. Com after the January 6th attack on the capitol, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger have gained reputations as the pro Democracy Republicans in congress. And, you know, to their credit they have become pariahs in their own party for refusing steadfastly to support donald trumps Big Lie of Election Fraud. Theyre now serving on the House Select Committee. In Fact Congresswoman Cheney lost her position in House Republican leadership over it. Again, that is to their credit. But are those pro Democracy Republicans helping to secure the right to vote and protect the very electoral process that trump tried to run roughshod over. Theres the for the people act, which we talked about, hr1. You know, it is a democratic kind of full Reformed Vision to strengthen our democracy and the right to vote and to end partisan gerrymandering and also restore regulation around speech and money. It would be really transformational. Its a bold vision. And for that reason its quite an Uphill Battle to become law. In fact Joe Manchin himself said he wasnt on board until they made some changes. Thats one. The other one is considerably more modest. Its a bill named after the late, great John Lewis. And that piece of legislation strengthens the voting Rights Act after the sustained effort by the Supreme Court to essentially gut it. Now, this one, this is like i said much more circumspect, limited in what it does. It should not be a controversial piece of legislation. For years and years, democrats and republicans have come together to reauthorize the voting Rights Act. The last time they did it was 2006 when george w. Bush was president. Senator mitch mcconnell, then majority whip, helped Usher It through the senate. Republican congressmen jim Sensen Brenner championed it In The House. Louis Gohmert And Devin nunes voted for it and president george w. Bush proudly signed it into law. Things are different in 2021. Yesterday the John Lewis voting Rights Advancement Act passed the house of representatives, and every single republican, every one voted against it, all of them. Liz Cheney And Adam kinzinger voted against it. Because right now there is no such thing truly as a robust pro Democracy Republican in 2021. Theyre unwilling to do what republicans and democrats have always done to just secure the basic right to vote for all americans. Joining me by phone is Congress Ann Sheila Jackson lee, a democrat representing texas 18th congressional district. She was arrested last month at a Demonstration Rallying Support for new federal voting legislation. Congresswoman, first, i wonder if you could just describe what this bill does and compare it in its Scope And Boldness and potential controversialness to the more aggressive hr1 . Chris, thank you for having me. First of all, what i would say is the John Robert Lewis Advancement Act was worth getting arrested for. Voting rights was worth getting arrested for. Frankly the bill that was voted on yesterday has enormous teeth. It strengthens the opportunity to fight against Voter Suppression and it means that it clearly holds states accountable across the nation that may have a number of Voting Suppression actions. And so it doesnt let you get away with anything. It has a retro Depression Provision under section 2. So in the state of texas, if sc7 passes we have an opportunity to file suit and win that suit in courts that would follow the law. In addition, it has punitive measures to insist that the idea of various practices that are in place, that will trigger a State Being covered by this particular bill. The S1 And H1 are partners. Its logistics, holidays, the opportunity to protect 24hour voting, the mailin ballots, the reenfranchising felons. Yes, it has the teeth but it is equal in strength to the John Robert Lewis act, they must go together absolutely. So this has been passed, i believe, by the house before. It was passed just now. Were you surprised it got zero republican votes . Absolutely. In fact what words can i use . Shameful, sinful. My question is, is there anyone that believes in a Democratic Republic among my friends who happen to be republicans. When i spoke on the floor of the house yesterday, i said does anyone have the courage to be able to move forward on ensuring every american has the right to vote. I have been here in the united States Congress and participated in the reauthorization that drew 98 senators, republicans and democrats, and over 415 in the House Republicans and democrats and signed with a gleeful face by george w. Bush. I was at the White House signing. Ive been with other reauthorizations or changes and modifications to improve Voting Rights and it has been bipartisan. The climate today is a result of the Big Lie, which i said on the floor of the house. The insurrection on January 6th. And i dont think anyone that happens to be a republican should get an excuse for not voting to empower americans to vote. Congresswoman sheila jackson lee, thank you so much for making some time for it tonight. I really appreciate it. Thank you. That is All In for tonight. The Rachel Maddow Show starts right now. Dpeng, rachel. Good evening, chris. Much appreciated. Thanks for joining us this hour. This is one of those news days where i spent the whole day prepping for a completely different show than the one were going to end up doing tonight. A lot of just tearing stuff up and starting over today, which is fine. But theres just a lot of important developing news, including News Stories that are developing over the course of this evening. And we are going to cover a lot of different bases tonight. We are of course keeping eyes on afghanistan and what is turning out to be just a massive, massive, unprecedented in size u. S. Military airlift out of that country. In recent days we have watched as the number of people being airlifted out of kabul climbed from a few hundred per day to 2,000 per day
